Much like the late Rodney Dangerfield, some films just can't get any respect. Shelved by Miramax for two years, An Unfinished Life was released with little fanfare between Morgan Freeman's Oscar win and Lasse Hallström's higher-profile Casanova. Despite critical praise from some quarters, the heartland drama got lost amidst the shuffle. The title comes from the epitaph of Griffin, late son of Wyoming rancher Einar (a rumpled Robert Redford). Between chores, he looks after ranch hand Mitch (Freeman), who was mauled by a bear the year before. One day, daughter-in-law Jean (Jennifer Lopez) and granddaughter Griff (Becca Gardner) drop by the ranch unexpectedly. They're on the run from Jean's abusive boyfriend, Gary (Damian Lewis), back in Iowa. "I don't want you here," Einar states flatly--he blames her for Griffin's death 12 years ago--but the look on the kid's face convinces him to relent. While Jean works as a waitress in town and embarks on a tentative relationship with Sheriff Crane (Josh Lucas), his newfound granddaughter helps to take care of Mitch. Just as the four are starting to form a loose-knit family, Gary comes looking for Jean and upsets the delicate balance. It may pack fewer surprises than the superior What's Eating Gilbert Grape and the bear symbolism may be a mite heavy-handed, but the deeply unfashionable An Unfinished Life deserves a second chance to find an audience. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars a great little movie.......2007-06-27

I didn't think I would be around long enough to EVER see Robert Redford looking crabby and scruffy............but I have! Will wonders never cease?
This movie has the greatest cast ever! Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Lucas (what a honey he is)round out the characters....sorry, I can't remember the little girl's name...she was good, as well.

The scenery was beautiful....it has love, drama, comedy, and a happy ending; what more do you want? You need to own this movie........it's one to watch when the family comes over!!!! I loved it!!!
ps.....it has animals, too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lasse Hallstrom rules........2007-06-22

He's simply the best film-maker ever for smart grown-ups. This fine film is yet another in a long series of knock-outs. He is an actor's director, with a particular knack for drawing fantastic performances out of kids. He also does beautiful landscapes, and conveys his `exotic' locations and period pieces with an exquisite eye for detail and authenticity. The guy is a treasure, a gift to us all. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I have seen.......2007-06-09

I don't understand why this movie is overlooked and under rated.. The wonderful storyline, the outstanding cast and the cinematography is outstanding! Robert Redford is always at his best, as is Morgan Freeman and J.Lo shines is this drama..It truly has some remarkable, hold your breath, omg scenes and equally some heart tugging ones..I don't like the tag of "chick Flick" as it really isnt as it really has some shocking, hold your breath scenes, even tho it is classified as a "Western", again it really cannot be classified into one Genre.. It IS a excellent movie for all..

5 out of 5 stars Good little movie........2007-06-05

I enjoyed the entertainment of the story line and the high quality acting by all the actors.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise.......2007-05-20

My wife came home with a rented DVD tonight; although I pride myself on trying to keep up with the latest films--what's good, what's not, etc., I had never even *heard* of this film. But I looked at the cast: Redford, Freeman (who is *always* good!), J Lo (yawn--but I was surprised!), etc., I thought "OK, I'll watch".

I was hooked with the opening scene, as a Grizzly Bear wanders through the Wyoming landscape; then, it took a little while for the film to get going, but then it started "clicking". What makes this film work on so many levels is the brilliant acting of Robert Redford (his finest in *years*--he should have been nominated for an Oscar for this one), Morgan Freeman (again, as always), and even J Lo turns in a credible performance. The little girl is very believable, as well.

The film's themes of the importance of family, forgiveness, redemption, etc are handled very well. And all of this against an absolutely gorgeous Wyoming background which was mesmerizing on my Widescreen TV!

This film was HIGHLY satisfying, and I'm going to order it ASAP. Get this and watch it with your family; you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great indie film.......2006-04-18

The slow pacing is a good match for the rural, quiet lifestyle. Characters are complex, interesting, likeable and believable. Especially enjoyed Julianne Nicholson's portrayal of Ella Smalley, a kind, honest young woman bringing some life to the lonely family dynamic of a single father raising two sons. The theme is bittersweet with a touch of hopefullness. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2005-08-15

A wonderful movie with really good acting. Some might think it is a depressing story but I really feel it was one of the best movies I've seen in tthe last 10 years. Must be good it's the only one I've purchased!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Movie.......2005-05-12

I loved this movie! I picked it up from Kmart because it was only $4.99 and ended up watching it about 8 times in one week! The acting was superb. The ending is heartbreaking, I cry every time I see Glenn Fitzgerald all alone in the movie theater wiping his eyes. See this if you like indie movies!

2 out of 5 stars Better Luck Next Time.......2004-09-30

This indie movie about two brothers in a rural landscape has a couple of interesting elements (competent acting, solid direction, worthwhile characters) but ultimately it suffers from an average and rushed plot that doesn`t make this cinematic experience work all that well. I still think that Hilary Birmingham is a director to watch, since her first film is still a decent and meritory effort, yet one hopes that her next work will show a bit more energy and courage.

Worth watching but doesn`t rise above average.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Title.......2004-06-16

Sometimes movie titles (Tully) are weaker than the movies. This story line of mid-western farm people from a vague time period, I'm guessing the late 1980's or mid-90's, is well developed. We care about young stud Tully, his dorky brother, and weather beaten dad. The farm is in danger from a mysterious debt and Tully is gradually falling for the freckled good-girl neighbor back from vet school. These are people that work. How many movies are about real people that work? No detectives or super-models here, no; these are rural folks that honky-tonk on a Saturday night and swim in the local water hole with their girlfriends, or make love down a lonely road on top of the hood of a 82 Cadillac. I cared about the characters.

Description

In THREE VIOLENT PEOPLE, Charlton Heston plays straight-laced rancher Colt Saunders, an ex-Confederate cavalryman coping with the land-grabbing tax policies of a greedy Reconstruction leader. Unbeknownst to him, he's married to a former dance hall girl named Lorna (Anne Baxter) who's determined to hide her shady past and keep him thinking she's a lady.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining character Western in the tradition of "Duel in the Sun.".......2006-11-10

When Cault Saunders (Charlton Heston) proposed marriage to the 'flower of the Old South,' Lorna Hunter (Anne Baxter) was completely surprised...

'I'm looking for a wife, Miss Hunter. Do you want to get married?' But Lorna's answer was interrupted by Cault's long kiss...

When they arrived to his ranch - already married - Lorna is introduced to Innocencio (Gilbert Roland) his Mexican right arm...

When Lorna begins to familiarize with the place, Cault's brother, Cinch (Tom Tryon) appears on the scene, demanding his brother to sell portion of the ranch to any Northerner and to pay him his part in gold...

Lorna was curious why Cinch is 'one-armed.' Her husband, impressed, narrated: 'We were just kids when it happened. We were horsing around on the windmill platform on the south ranch. Cinch got his arm caught in the gears of the windmill. I had to amputate his arm.'

Soon, leaving the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, a stranger named Massey comes in sight... He identifies Lorna as a former saloon hostess from St. Louis... He tries to address some courteous words to her, but Lorna pretended ignorance...

Cable (Forrest Tucker) insisted in pushing Massey to acknowledge Saunders about the past of his wife...

Lorna admits her sin to Saunders, who was astonished... 'I'd get down on my knees if I thought it would help,' said Lorna, revealing then that she is going to have his baby...

In the meantime, the government soldiers were planning for possession of the ranch, and Cinch invites his brother to a showdown...

Heston is convincing as the untouchable in ethics, straight attitude toward upright conduct and honesty...

Anne Baxter is excellent in her role as the tarnished woman, offended in her dignity... I remember her when preparing to leave her husband, she warns him with this great truth: 'When you're raising the boy, try to remember something. That people aren't perfect. They make mistakes. And when they do, they suffer, they pay. So when he makes his mistakes, try to find it in you to forgive him.'

Tom Tryon seems reasonable, but avaricious and deceitful...

Gilbert Roland will be always remembered as the Great Mexican Latin Lover of the silent and sound screen...

Filmed in VistaVision and Technicolor, and directed by Rudolph Maté "Three Violent People" is an entertaining character Western in the tradition of "Duel in the Sun."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-06-22

This has to be one of my all-time favorite westerns.Mr.Heston is superior as the arrogant,want-his-way ranch owner and Ms.Baxter portrays a dancehall-turned-wife with such finesse when something happens that neither of them expected.Great movie

3 out of 5 stars Anna Christie in Reconstruction Texas.......2005-11-27

This is the story of an exConfederate officer, (Charlton Heston) who meets and impulsively marries a former dance hall lady, (Anne Baxter). He knows nothing of her past, but through the schemings of corrupt carpetbaggers who want his ranch, he soon learns all. He is furious and sends her away. His humor is not improved when she and his resentful younger brother try to make off with his prize herd of horses. But all ends well, when love and true character triumph.

This is a classic B western, made at the height of the "adult western" era. Ms Baxter's costumes are 50's cocktail dresses with long skirts. One wonders why this cast of heavy hitters, (Heston, Baxter, Gilbert Roland, Forrest Tucker, Tom Tryon) were featured in such a routine film. Although everyone does a professional job, the scenes have a stagey quality. Perhaps as "A viewer" suggested, Baxter and Heston were exhausted from their recent efforts in "The Ten Commandments."

Nonetheless, there are some interesting plot turns and great location photograpy. It is certainly one of the better movies of this type. The bottom line is go ahead and see it.

5 out of 5 stars Three Violent People Applause.......2003-10-20

One of my favorite movies of all times! Looked everywhere for it, and finally found it! Absolutly one of a kind, and very creative in the way of westerns.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2000-04-27

This movie is very entertaining, though perhaps dated. I loved Anne Baxter's performance. It's a 50's post-civil war western drama (based on no historical fact whatsoever). I suspect it was made to cash in on Heston's popularity. I absolutely loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Growing Up Is Very Hard To Do.......2005-08-29

SPIN takes a road much traveled - the coming of age tale of a child whose parents are suddenly absent - but the result is much stronger a story than most in this genre. Based on the novel by Donald Everett Axinn and adapted for the screen by writer/director James Redford (yes, son of Robert Redford, but strong enough a talent not to need to depend on shadows!), SPIN is an evocative moment in history (the 1950s) when the world was more quiet and young people would work their ways through the maze of adolescence without clouds of outside threats. This, then, becomes more poignant and sensitive a study of one lad's growing up to become an adult facing mirrors of those faces from the past and the present.

Eddie Haley (Max Madore) is very young when his parents die in a plane crash and is placed in the care of his parent's workers Margaret and Ernesto Bejarano (Dana Delaney and Rubén Blades) at the decision of his pilot uncle Major Haley (Stanley Tucci) - a man whose own demons have left him seemingly invulnerable to intimacy and family, electing to move away from the Haley ranch and its responsibilities rather than raising Eddie. Eddie's companion as a child is Francesca (Marissa Baca) who, while not an orphan, is motherless and living with a cruel father. They bond and in addition to the very supportive Bejaranos provide Eddie with as much footing as he is able to manage.

Move forward to Eddie as a teenager (Ryan Merriman) and he has become a mild punk, floundering around seeking meaning to life and afraid of relationships - fearing he will be ultimately deserted. Francesca (Paula Garcés) moves back into town from Mexico and gradually the two become close and involved: Eddie's demons and issues riddle him while Francesca's equally brittle demons seem to make her stronger. Major Haley returns, is at first greatly resented by Eddie until the Major teaches Eddie to fly a plane left to him by his departed father. The relationship that develops between the two is as strong as it is difficult. A tragedy involving Francesca and her father occurs resulting finally in Eddie's ability to feel mature emotions and follows his courage and his heart to change his and Francesca's lives.

Redford keeps this potentially saccharine story in tight reins, never allowing bathos but always sharing a view that each of us is human and capable of errors, but equally capable of recovering and resolving consequences. The cast is uniformly strong with Tucci giving one of his finest and most subtle performances to date. Merriman is young and shows great promise: Blades and Delany are seasoned veterans and bring a realistic rapport that adds to the credibility of a story also dealing with ethnic prejudice. The cinematography by Paul Ryan is excellent - some of the best aerial photography outside of the usual war scenes on film. Recommended, not because it is a great movie, but because it is an honest one and the first example of James Redford's seemingly generous talent. Grady Harp, August 05

4 out of 5 stars learning to soar.......2005-06-07

Young Eddie becomes an orphan when his pilot father dies in a plane crash, and is left in the guardianship of his uncle, U.S. Air Force Major Haley (Stanley Tucci), who leaves the parenting to his housekeepers, (Dana Delany and Rubén Blades). We follow Eddie as a child (Max Madore), but mostly in his teen years. Ryan Merriman gives a convincing and sensitive portrayal of Eddie as a youth, struggling to find his identity, falling in love without the ability to adequately express his feelings, and the inevitable drama that comes with growing into adulthood.
Though the plot is sometimes predictable, there are many intense moments, and the acting by all is excellent. Tucci, Blades and Delany are all terrific, and as Eddie's love interest, Paula Garcés is lovely as Francesca, a girl with an abusive and controlling father (Daniel O'Haco).

I'm partial to films that are about flight, and single engine airplanes are a central part of this story, which is well written and directed by James Redford (son of Robert) in his film directorial debut, based on the novel by Donald Everett Axinn. The cinematography by Paul Ryan is wonderful, with beautifully framed shots, and the aerial photography stupendous.
Set in Arizona in the 1950s, it has a good feel for the era, and the place.
Family friendly with no gratuitous violence, this is a quiet, sensitive coming-of-age film that won't set the world on fire, but is nice, satisfying viewing, and is probably the start of a long career for Ryan Merriman.
Total running time is 107 minutes.

A true rediscovery of the most valuable kind, The Hired Hand has been superbly restored after 30 years of obscurity--which followed a pitifully half-hearted release in 1971. The Western storyline is simplicity itself: after many years, a wanderer (Peter Fonda) returns to his farm and wife (Verna Bloom), with his saddlemate (the incomparable Warren Oates) in tow; violence intrudes. But the subtle sexual politics in Alan Sharp's script, the guitar sound of Bruce Langhorne's music, and the rapturous landscapes in Vilmos Zgismond's cinematography create a fresh take on the old form. This was Fonda's directing debut (two years after Easy Rider), and while it has an unmistakably seventies vibe to it, the film also feels like an "eastern" Western, its minimalist style approaching zen. Give yourself over to its deliberate mood, and by the time the final shot rolls into view you'll know you've seen something special. --Robert Horton

Warren Oates may not be the star of The Hired Hand, but both he and Verna Bloom outshine director Peter Fonda's quiet performance. A lot of that's down to the writing, with screenwriter Alan Sharp giving both supporting players excellent parts - indeed, Bloom's is one of the best women's roles ever written for a Western - and part of it seems to be down to the gentle generosity of spirit that Fonda imbues his cut of the film with. While never quite as affecting as it could be, and at times over-egging the artistry with not always successful montages or camera techniques in Vilmos Zsigmond's otherwise marvellous cinematography, it's still a satisfying and rewarding character piece that just happens to be set out West

The collector's edition DVD comes with a plethora of extras, including ample deleted scenes that were restored for the NBC television version that eventually supplanted the theatrical version. They're interesting, and highlight Larry Hagman's nice performance as a very diplomatic sheriff, but their deletion does make the film much stronger, placing the emphasis on the interplay of the three central characters and, most crucially, allowing Oates' character to make his own decision towards the film's resolution. It's a shame that screenwriter Alan Sharp isn't among the interviewees on the one-hour documentary on the disc, but perhaps that's because, ever the realist, he always regarded his fine Western scripts as pastiches where everyone else is arguing in favor of the film's realism and revisionism. But most bizarre among the extras are Universal's original trailers and radio spots, marketing it as an all-action revenge Western for the Easy Rider crowd - `Peter Fonda is riding again - back to the woman he loves and the revenge he craves!'

4 out of 5 stars A Quiet 70's Western that is hauntingly Memorable.......2006-06-28

"The Hired Hand" was Peter Fonda's first stab at directing (he only directed two more films). The story involves Fonda going back to his wife and homestead after several years absence; he brings his buddy Warren Oates along with him. His wife, Verna Bloom, isn't so interested anymore with being his wife (and who can blame her?) so she hires him and Oates on as ranch hands, hence "The Hired Hand."

Speaking of Verna Bloom, she's not made out to be very attractive in the film; she just comes across rather bland and plain. One could argue, of course, that this adds to the realism of the picture; after all, would you likely catch a bodacious goddess living alone in the Western wilderness for very long? I only bring this up because Verna appears one year later in Clint Eastwood's "High Plains Drifter," wherein it is revealed that she is actually quite a fair-looking woman. Who knows, perhaps it's simply because she has her hair down in the latter film.

In any event, "The Hired Hand" is a quiet, highly believable picture that boldly sneers at Western film conventions. Yes, you'll see a couple of gun fights, but they're realistic in tone and unconventional to the Western genre.

This may make the film boring to some, but not to me. Truth be known, I like a variety of Westerns, everything from "Shane" to "The Missing" and everything in between. The only Westerns I don't like are ones that have that goofy, unrealistic vibe, like "Hondo" (I'm not talking about Western comedies here; I love "Support Your Local Sheriff").

"The Hired Hand" probably won't blow you away or anything; it's a quiet, adult-oriented film. I saw it last December for the first time and, somehow, various sequences have just stayed with me; like they're burnt into my psyche. It's hauntingly memorable. If this sounds like your cup of tea, don't miss out.

4 out of 5 stars A patient, delicate and redemptive Western........2006-02-09

Martin Scorsese in the two minutes he contributed to disk number two, described the film industry during which "The Hired Hand" was born, adventurous and willing to take chances after the success of "Easy Rider." Not a description one would typically assign to a picture that is as gentle and patient as "The Hired Hand." The film begins like a baptismal dream, with a slightly out of focus lens capturing the shimmering beauty of a man joyously splashing in the water and another fishing at the rivers edge. Behind the tranquil images a banjo and a fiddle, lazily easing their way through the morning. When the two men become three we learn that they're California bound . . . to see the "Ocean like a great blue prairie." When the body of a drowned seven or eight year old little girl gets snagged on the leader's fishing line, the tenor of the serenity changes, resonating more deeply and with purpose. Harry will not make the journey to the sea but instead will make the journey back home to the wife and child he left for his wanderlust. When he arrives home to find an embittered, lonely, but determined woman along with a carefree 7 year old girl, he offers his services as a "hired hand" to work the place to "see how it runs." With this arrangement having been made, the slow process of healing and reconciliation begins but caution must be heeded because loneliness is like a cancer: it eats away at one's resistance and is a poor surrogate for commitment. This balancing act is played out with delicacy, tenderness and a devotion to the characters. "The Hired Hand" is a film laced with religious symbolism with the action coming only after long spells of traveling, trading horses and reflection. From the moment that we see the drowned girl till the moment our protagonist tells his wife "I'll be back" there is this sense of inevitability, and it is the tension between the desire to rest and the need to act that keeps the film moving forward. Extremely well done.

5 out of 5 stars Good Work.......2005-03-11

Like the recent "Sargasso Sea", this flick is a prime example of how the industry can every now and then, with no rational explanation, fumble the ball completely. "Hired Hand" was tossed on the market in '71 with no backing whatsoever and sank like a stone. A year or so later, it was shown on national TV. I clearly recall that for several days it was all that people were talking about. Not the critics, who were still sucking their thumbs, but ordinary viewers, wondering where this great picture had come from, what it was doing on the tube, and why they didn't make more just like it. In the age of the Net and the DVD, "Hired Hand" would have had a fine long run. As it is, it's good to see it back after thirty-odd years.

"Hired Hand" is a near-perfect combination of acting, cinematography, storyline, and music. Fonda, seriously skidding since "Easy Rider", gave a performance that should have revived his career then and there. It's also one of the finer moments of Warren Oates' long record of providing support for better-known actors. Verna Bloom was a veteran of small roles in many well-known films. Here she embodies the frontier wife, plain, strong, and unbending. Decades were to pass before it became common for actresses to face the camera in this kind of role with next to no makeup. Nobody has ever made it work better than Bloom.

The music, a lone guitar playing long, sad melodic lines, will stay with you for years. The story is as simple as they come, and as unforgettable.

"Hired Hand" is an adult Western in the pure sense, a film dealing with adult problems in a clear-eyed manner: the consequences of necessary and terrible decisions, the regret that remains long afterward. One thing often neglected in film Westerns is the simple human cost of the Westward Migration, not only in lives but in crippled emotions, overwhelming loneliness, and unending grief. "Hired Hand" brings this across more clearly than any other film I've seen. The final shot of the frontier wife on the porch clutches the soul; for a single moment we're one with all those forgotten figures whose suffering exceeds anything we know, and could never have been matched by what they hoped to gain. And that, children, is what we call art.

4 out of 5 stars Dona Barbara Review.......2004-12-28

I cannot compare Betty Kaplans Dona Barbara to the version where Maria Felix played Dona Barbara, since I have not seen that version. However, Betty Kaplans film version does do justice to the book by Romulo Gallegos. The music is very original and remains with you for days after having seen the movie. Location where movie was filmed has many of the characteristics and flavor described by Gallegos in the book. The acting is not bad and some performances are entralling. I would recommend this movie whether or not you have read the book. It would be more enjoyable if you read the book, preferably in Spanish in its original form.

"The Hired Hand" was Peter Fonda's first stab at directing (he only directed two more films). His wife, Verna Bloom, isn't so interested anymore with being his wife (and who can blame her?) so she hires him and Oates on as ranch hands, hence "The Hired Hand."

Not a description one would typically assign to a picture that is as gentle and patient as "The Hired Hand." The film begins like a baptismal dream, with a slightly out of focus lens capturing the shimmering beauty of a man joyously splashing in the water and another fishing at the rivers edge.

Description

He deserted his family to explore the frontier, but life is about to lead him home. After roaming the Wild West, a wayward husband returns home to his wife and child, but rebuilding their family will involve an unexpected test of faith and a vital journey of forgiveness. The Hired Hand reconfigures the traditional Western in a story that emphasizes the human reality that underlines the cowboy myth. Its focus is less on adventure than on the emotional journey and fallout of adventure.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's the supporting characters that make it work.......2006-11-11
