1 out of 5 stars i don't know about sitting,but this is bull !.......2006-06-15

amazing how a movie about sitting bull can have a white man as the star and the title man is really just a costar! as history this worthless and as adventure it does a little better, but not much!
the print here is very bad, with sound drops and some scenes are so washed out as to be unwatchable! i know you sould not expect a great copy at such a cheep price, but you should be able to watch it!!!!! skip it!

1 out of 5 stars interesting.......2006-01-22

Just watched this on TCM. It is amazing that somebody made a movie where President Grant and Sitting Bull were going to sit down together between the two armies and discuss peace, but that Custer screwed the whole thing up on purpose by disobeying orders and attacking the indians while Grant was waiting to be taken to the meeting place. It is certainly sympathetic to the indians, and a bit ahead of its time in 1954 in this respect. Sitting Bull chides one of his braves not to scalp Custer because we do not scalp brave men who died in battle. I recommend that you watch "Little Big Man".

3 out of 5 stars historical and entertaining.......2002-05-13

This was probably one of the better videos recounting the battle
of the little big horn. Only the men involved in this historical
event know for sure what happened, but this seems as close as
any video I've seen, compared to what has been written. Dale Robertson did a magnificent job in his role as the major who
tries to find justice for the indians. I haven't seen Robertson in many romantic roles such as this. Mary Murphy becomes Mrs. Robertson in real life for a short short time in 1956. I would recommend this video if you like westerns.

3 out of 5 stars Good Cast in a Decent Low Budget Effort.......2006-07-23

Former Tarzan (and former hubby of Lana Turner) Lex Barker portrays the fearless Indian scout in this tale of pre-Revolutionary Indian Wars in upstate New york Lon Chaney does well as a sympathetic Chief Pontiac who only choses the warpath when forced to it by the brutality of the White Man. Barry Kroeger is most hatefull as the Hessian Officer. Not bad, considering this one was probably made on a shoestring.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible quality.......2006-02-02

I was shocked the quality of this DVD was so bad. One wonders why a company would even attempt to market something so bad, unless it is merely to make a few extra bucks. Unfortunately, once bitten, twice shy. I would be very skeptical on purchasing any more DVD's from Alpha. Suffice it to say, they put more money into their catalog than the product featured in the catalog. My 8mm home movies from the early 80's were better quality.

1 out of 5 stars What an abomination!.......2006-01-31

What a pity! This reviewer hadn't seen this film since it originally screened in movie theatres circa 1954. By today's standards, the story is stiff, dated, and with hefty doses of propaganda and stereotyping. The acting is not memorable. Nevertheless, the presentation had some merits as the scenery in the original film was quite good and some of the staging was interesting. Despite such flaws, this reviewer, who grew up in the Black Hills and was living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation when the film was made, was looking forward to having the DVD.

But discussing the merits of the film is superfluous, because the DVD presentation is so abominable: Sound is harsh. Picture color fidelity is nil: Greens appear as oranges; other color distortions are rampant across the spectrum of colors and across any given screen image. Aside from the color, to say that the image is grainy would be a gross understatement: As a friend remarked, viewing a regular film with 9 out of 10 pixels being nonfunctional on the HDTV would probably produce a similar result. Though the film was originally done in Cinemascope, it is impossible to avoid some form of distortion on an HDTV 16x9 screen: Either one must be satisfied with a picture area reminiscent of the size of a postage stamp in the middle of the screen, or else there is distortion in ALL OTHER MODES including ZOOM mode. Playing the DVD on an older system seems to fill out the 4x3 TV image, though at what cost this reviewer is unable to say, there obviously being major lost of picture area. But such matters are irrelevant because regardless of what system one tries to use, the cumulative DVD flaws are so bad that this reviewer, in disgust, simply could no longer watch it. It is amazing that such a piece of crap would be marketed.

If you are contemplating buying this DVD, you should be aware that the manufacturer has superimposed its "Platinum Disc Corporation" logo in the bottom right corner of the screen throughout the movies. All of the movies on this disc are available from other manufacturers who are more respectful of the films. Check the listings here at Amazon.com for the "no logo" versions from Roan and other suppliers. (Please note I would have given this disc zero stars but that option is not available.)

4 out of 5 stars Gunslingers and Lawmen.......2005-04-05

This review refers to Volume 13 of the "Great American Western" series by Platinum Disc...

Volume 13 of the Great American Western series is devoted to gunfighters and the lawmen that pursued them. There are 4 films on this single disc edition that have some great stars and will make for a fun and enjoyable weekend for the Western lover.

First up from 1974 is "The Gun And The Pulpit". Marjoe Gortner is fast on the draw, and a famous gunfighter. When he is set up on a fake murder charge, he hides out in a small town and poses as a preacher. The townsfolk are in awe of this preacher who uses a six-shooter to turn the bad guys into believers! Lots of fun.The film also stars Pamela Sue Martin, Slim Pickens and Estelle Parsons. It is in color and Directed by Daniel Petrie.

"Boot Hill" from 1969 is a spaghetti western, with a mix of American and Italian actors. A traveling circus becomes involved with some really bad hombres, when they save the life of the man who is after them. But when the bad guys claim the life of one of their own, they team up with the hero to help stop the desperados in their tracks. The film stars Terrence Hill and Woody Strode and is also known as " Boot Hill:Trinity Rides Again". Also look for Victor Buono, Bud Spencer and Lionel Stander. In color directed by Giuseppe Colizzi.

Mickey Rooney is a real treat to watch and adds a few laughs to, "My Outlaw Brother". He's a city slicker from New York and comes out west to find his big brother who he has idealized all these years. He meets up and travels with a lawmen on the trail of an really bad outlaw, and as it turns out, they are both looking for the same person! The fabulous cast includes Robert Preston, Robert Stack and and Wanda Hendrix. It's a Black and White, made in 1951. Directed by Elliot Nugent.

Last, but cetainly not least is "The Gunfighters". it's an excellent and captivating documentary, which appears to be made recently(maybe the early 90's). It uses Hollywood film footage and old photographs to delve into the lives and psyche of notorious outlaws and the lawmen that chased after them. Factual in depth stories on The Dalton Boys, Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, The Youngers and James Brothers, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill, The Renos, and Bob Ford are narrated. The Earps and Doc Holiday are also discussed but, not much time is spent on them. The case says it is 1 hour, but this was actually a two-part series that ran about an hour and 20 minutes.

The transfers are not pristeen. There are scratches and graineyness, especially in the older films, and the color films are pretty dated. But if you are a western lover, you really can't go wrong for the price.

Platinum has put together, as far as I can tell now, about 30 of these single discs to choose from. The first ten, seem to feature a particular actor, and the rest seem in most cases to have some sort of theme. You can buy them by the individual volume or in package deals, ranging from 2-10 DVDs in a package.
It gets a little confusing, because the multi-packs are also listed by the same name and volume numbers. Usually the buying info will tell you how many discs are in the package(and you can get an idea from the price as well). This Vol 13 is also available in the 10 pack Vol. 2. Each disc comes in it's own keep case, and all the sound is restored in 5.1 audio.
All the films are on one side(so far), and each film has about 8 chapter stops.

These packages and films are for the true oater lover. If you're looking for great classics, beautifully restored by the big studios, these packages are probably not for you.

        Saddle up and Happy Trails....Laurie

4 out of 5 stars 8 Films, Fabulous Cast Lists, Action, Adventure and Romance.......2006-11-10

This review refers to the Great American Western, 2 DVD pack, Vol 5.(includes single Volumes 7 and 8).

Those of you that have been collecting these GAW series from Platinum already know that there are many of these discs to choose from. Over 30 I have seen so far. There are single volumes with 4 or 5 films on each disc, and there are multi packs ranging anywhere from 2 to 10 discs. Each volume is in it's own keepcase, and most, but not all have been enhanced in 5.1 audio. The pictures are not Criterion like transfers, some are very old, and show their age, but usually there is nothing to detract from the fun of these films. Individual volumes are usually devoted to a particular star, or theme(tough guys, frontier women, American Indians, etc). I haven't gotten much further on the later volumes after 20, except for a John Wayne package, that includes Vol.24(John Wayne 2DVD).Just to confuse us, Platinum calls the multipacks as well as the single volumes, Vols 1,2,3, etc. You can usually tell by the price how many are in each item, and sometimes they will even say in the product info. Also, some of the multi-packs have an 's' after the word Western, to make them plural.Oater lovers, really can't go wrong for this price.

So..This Vol 5 is a two disc set, that contains Vols 7 and 8 of the single editions(are ya still with me?). I will be reviewing the 2 volumes separately as well, and will talk more about the individual films, but this review is just to let you know what you will get with this package. I did load up the discs to make sure that the films were what the box says.I love Platinum for putting together these oaters for us, but every once in a while they make a goof on the box listings. This package has the films correctly printed, but there are a couple of confusing details. First of all the outter holder does not state that this is Vol 5., but when I put in the bar code from the box(096009101992) in the search, this is where it takes me. Also my DVD player did not decode the 5.1 that these films are supposed to be. If you purchase from an outside seller, you may want to check with them as well, to make sure, you are getting this package.

With all that said, these 2 volumes range from 1946 to 1977, and just getting a peek at the wonderful names in the cast list of some of them, makes them worth the price of admission. each disc has 4 films. You can veg out with these oaters all day!

        So..What's In the Box?...

Vol 7...1956..."The Naked Hills"(I did view this one in it's entirety)... A Young David Wayne, becomes obsessed with striking it rich in gold country. Also stars Keenan Wynn and James Barton.
1977..."She Came To The Valley" based on Cleo Dawson's Novel of the same name) A woman's hardships while settling in the west is chronicled during the time of the Spanish-American war. Dean Stockwell, Scott Glenn,Freddy Fender.
1946..."Northwest Trail"...A mountain man agrees to guide a woman through rough country, and they meet with danger along the way. George Meeker, Bob Steele Ian Keith and Raymond Hatton.
1967...."Any Gun Can Play"..okay this one, from the little I saw of it, appeared to be a spaghetti western and a "Fistful of Dollars" wanna be. But it looked like it could be pretty good with stars like Ed Byrnes("Kookie", from 77 Sunset Strip), and Gilbert Roland in the Cast.

Vol 8...1949..."Tulsa"....This one looked like a winner. A Walter Wanger film, listen to this cast. Susan Hayward, Robert Preston, Pedro Armendariz and Chill Wills! Whoa Nellie!...Cattleman's daughter wreaks vengeance on the encroaching oilmen in Oklahoma.
1972..."Fair Play" A boy visits his uncle's saloon, a haven for outlaws. Two warring factions create the action. Stars Paul Ford, Terry Wilson.
1956..."Mohawk" 18t century Boston Artist is sent to Mohawk Valley to paint landscapes and Native Americans, but becomes embroiled in a war between the Indians and a land baron. Scott Brady, Rita Gam, Neville Brand.
1959..."The Young Land"...Dennis Hopper, Patrick Wayne, Dan O'Herlihy, Yvonne Craig. Mexican-Americans are anxious to see the justice system at work, as a man is tried for killing a Mexican.

I have made a listmania of other volumes and films I have reviewed so far in this series. You can find it by clicking on my Listmanias from my profile page and going back through them.

        Happy Trails to All..Enjoy..Laurie

3 out of 5 stars Good choice from Platinum.......2007-02-19

This review is for Platinum's Great American Western Vol. 22. It's meant to help other buyers since Platinum does not publish much information about these volumes.
The films in volume 22 are:

(All of the films have a good picture quality; The Buckskin Lady is kind of dark; Light of Western Stars clear, but with a few scratches; and the two Buster Crabbe flicks play OK too for unrestored movies, with no scratches or parts missing.)

        1. The Buckskin Lady, 1957, 66 min., B&W, directed by Carl Hittleman, with Patricia Medina, Richard Denning, Henry Hull and Gerald Mohr.

"The hell-hot story of a hell-bent dancehall dame who climbed to the top bullet by bullet, man by man."

The above description was on the original theatrical poster. More often than not, those descriptions would give a completely false idea of the movie, and this was no exception.
The Buckskin Lady is a psychological western drama set in a small Nevada town. British-born Patricia Medina, the Buckskin Lady of the title plays a very different role than she does in her other films, such as the swashbuckling sagas with Louis Hayward, two of which, "Captain Pirate" and "Fortunes of Captain Blood", are available from Amazon.
Patricia Medina plays Angela, the daughter of a drunken doctor, who makes her living as a card dealer in the local saloon. She can't help feeling attracted to a lowdown gunslinger (Gerald Mohr), but when straightforward Dr. Bruce Merrit (Richard Denning) comes along, she decides to change and walk the straight and narrow, but Slinger will stop at nothing to keep his grip on her.

        2. Light of Western Stars, 1940, 64 min, B&W, directed by Lesley Selander, with Victor Jory, Jo Ann Sanders, Russel Hayden, Morris Ankrum, Tom Tyler.

Based on a Zane Grey novel, Light of Western Stars, portrays the US-Mexican border of the turn of the century. An unsuspecting Eastern woman, Madeline Hammond (Jo Ann Sanders), purchases a ranch that is being used as the basis for a gun smuggling operation with the cooperation of the local sheriff. Gene Stewart (Victor Jory) is a boisterous cowhand who lives on both sides of the border and of the law. Although it was produced by the same people who produced Hopalong Cassidy's films, the plot doesn't help much and somehow the film does not add up. To begin with, it's hard to take Victor Jory as a hero (or anti-hero) after seeing him so many times playing heavies. Anyway, he's a daredevil who fears nothing in the beginning when he tangles with the corrupt sheriff and then suddenly we will find him in Mexico, drunk as a skunk, sharing a stall with a pig and a goat, and the story gives no reason for his sudden need of redemption in the hands of stalwart Madeline.

        3. Billy the Kid: Frontier Outlaws, 1944, 58 min., directed by Sam Newfield, with Buster Crabbe and Al "Fuzzy" St John.
Billy Carson shoots a man, is found not guilty in one of the most hilarious court scenes ever filmed and then infiltrates a gang of criminals disguised as a Mexican.

        4. Billy the Kid: The Kid Rides Again, 1943, 55 min., directed by Sam Newfield, with Buster Crabbe and Al "Fuzzy" St John.
Billy the Kid (Buster Crabbe) is about to be tried for a holdup he did not commit, but escapes to help settlers who are being swindled out of their land by a "respectable" citizen and finds the real culprit.

Buster Crabbe's formula westerns have all the ingredients (low budget, a horse with a name, a sidekick) of a typical B-Western. Produced by PRC, a Poverty Row outfit known for churning up a Western film in a week or less, they have, nonetheless, a few things that set these two westerns apart. One is the comedy and the witty dialogs. In one scene, the corrupt town boss says: "I'll stand for law and order till I'm black in the face". At that precise moment, Fuzzy Jones, who had stuck his finger in an ink pot, manages to release his finger splashing the ink all over the boss's face. Another differentiation is that Buster Crabbe was given a "license to kill" by the script writers. B-Westerns would usually end up in a chase and a fist fight with the heavy falling on his own knife, falling off a cliff, dying from a horse he had beaten, or something. But not with Buster Crabbe. He would fight a duel and shoot to kill.

Buster Crabbe did not regard himself an actor, but he had a pleasant personality and a vitality that made his films enjoyable, though. Al "Fuzzy" St John, his sidekick, provides the gags, and the movies offer a pleasant combination of comic relief, witty dialogs and good Western-style action.
