Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O'Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since--it's no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen--that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding, and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland, but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. --Robert Horton

The DVD showed up within the time frame in mint condition. I was very satisfied with the service.

5 out of 5 stars The Quiet Man.......2007-06-27

Immortal director Ford directed this Oscar-winning valentine to his ancestral home, a love story that soars thanks to Ford's resplendent shooting and a solid, flavorful performance from the Duke. O'Hara radiates an untamed red-haired beauty playing Wayne's love interest, while McLaglen is a joy as the blustery Red Will.

5 out of 5 stars Commentary by Maureen O'Hara is wonderful.......2007-05-31

The commentary by Maureen O'Hara is wonderful. I've seen this movie many times over the years but never knew the many stories and facts that Miss O'Hara reveals in the two hours of commentary. Her memory is remarkable and her comments are charming.

5 out of 5 stars Our Family's Favorite.......2007-05-28

The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
This has been an all time favorite of our family for years. Perhaps because it is set in Ireland, or because we are all of Irish descent; or just because it is just a great story and very well made. In any case it is a movie for the whole family to watch and even though it is a classic, it seems like it was made recently.

It will pull on all of the emotions, bringing out laughter, cheering, and tears. The guys will be drawn by the great male cast, the women by the romance and the children by the fun. It is truly for all genders and ages.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-19

The dvd was new and in perfect condition and arrived in three days. It also contained interviews from the actors and other extras. Well worth the price.

Product Description

Multimillionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has a plan for a spectacular new theme park: a secluded island where visitors can observe actual dinosaurs. With the latest development in DNA technology, scientists can clone brachiosaurs, tricerotops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, using the blood preserved in amber from insects that bit the dinosaurs long ago. Paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are duly impressed with the living results during an advance visit. But when a devious employee tampers with the sophisticated security system, the dinosaurs escape, forcing the visitors to fight for their very survival.

Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars You have to read the original Crichton novel. The plot is better than in the movie.......2007-07-06

I read Jurassic Park for the first time in 1992, right after the paperback edition was published. I had never read science fiction novels before JP. I just devoured it during a flight from New York to Costa Rica. I was captivated by the smart extrapolation of science, particularly the clever use of biotechnology for breeding extinct animals, the warnings about uncontrolled uses of new technologies (Crichton's recurring theme), all the new and updated information about how dinosaurs really were, and by Crichton's trademark in his earlier works, a storyline full of verisimilitude, imagination and originality. What a great SF novel this is!

And then, in 1993 my disappointment was as high as my expectations were for the movie, except for the new computer-generated (CGI) special effects, the dinosaurs looked very realistic, fully integrated with the actors. The merit of the movie is indeed the successful introduction of CGI, a technology that was a revolution in cinema, from which we are benefiting from up to these days. Together with Star Wars and The Matrix, JP is a landmark in modern cinema's history. Just for this reason is worthwhile to own the DVD, or if you still have small children, they will love it.

As compared to the original plot in the book, the movie it's a deception, and it's also misleading to judge Crichton's work. Spielberg made a typical kids movie out of the original plot. Also, the brief scenes showing Costa Rica are ridiculous, the setting is a fake with a 100% Mexican flavor. The book makes a more realistic description of how Costa Rica really is. Michael Crichton did his homework, Steven Spielberg did not.

Unfortunately, for the sequel, Crichton wrote a PG-13 action movie script instead of a good SF novel, including the resurrection of some of the key characters who had died in JP I. Then Spielberg changed the plot again, and the resulting JP II ("The Lost World") was even worse, including an undeserved ending, sort of King Kong craze in the US streets.

For those of you who were kids or teenagers in 1993, when you watched the movie for the first time, I highly recommend you to read the book, especially if you already are a SF fan. Thereafter, watch the DVD and compare. You're not going to regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Somewhere in this movie there is the potential for a masterpiece that never quite materializes.......2007-05-29

Last night I rewatched Jurassic Park for the first time since the '90s. I still am amazed by the dinosaurs and how real they still look and am charmed by Richard Attenborough's performance as John Hammond. But I don't like this movie as much as I once did. So, lest I get some hateful comments, before I list the problems with this movie let me say that I still feel this is a good movie (good, meaning that it's certainly worth a rent and possibly even buying it). The intent of this review is not to bash this film so much as to challenge the claim that it is a masterpiece. Here is a list of some of those reasons:

1. Trying to hard to make people laugh (The zingy one-liners):

"What do they got in there? King Kong?", "Dinosaurs eat men, woman inherits the earth.", "We're back in the car again", "God bless you". These are examples of some of the many one-liners from the movie, obviously designed to generate a laugh in the audience. Some of them work well. Others not so well.

I don't think that caustic remarks, in moderation, is a bad thing. But the movie has so many of these lines that it makes me wonder if the characters are in some sort of unconcious competition with each other to see who can come up with the most biting comment. The overall effect is that this doesn't feel like how people, who are seeing dinosaurs for the first time in real life, would actually talk.

2. The pompous moral rectitude (manipulating the story to fit the ethics):

"We shouldn't tamper with nature because we have no idea what we are getting into because life will find the way." That's, more or less, a paraphrase by some of the dinosaur experts right before a sequence of events would prove them right, as if they had psychic vision of what was to come. I must say that, for people who spend their lives studying these fossils, they had a very lukewarm response to what I would expect to be their childhood dreams coming true. I, as a viewer of the movie, seemed to be more excited to see these CGI images than the characters who were, in the movie, seeing actual dinosaurs. In Spielberg's earlier work (E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws) there wasn't some underlying moral message and it got on just fine.

3. The two kids (especially the girl):

Come on, admit it. These kids were annoying and were obviously included in the story just to please kids their age and get their parents to bring them to the theater.

The girl is the worst of the two. She is supposed to be smarter than her brother but while they were in a car she decides to shine a flashlight at the T-Rex which causes it to move towards them. INCREDIBLY, the girl continues to shine the flashlight at the T-Rex. Through Herculian efforts, I managed not to shout "turn the f***ing light off" at the TV. The kids are just a burden to everything and everyone.

Alright, I hope that wasn't too brutal. Besides those small things, I liked the movie and don't regret buying it. It's just not a masterpiece like many people claim.

4 out of 5 stars Overrated...And It's Aged Over the Years.......2007-05-17

"Jurassic Park" is one of Steven Spielberg's highest grossing films, but can hardly be called his best. While it's still very entertaining, it's aged over the years and seems a little bit cheesy by today's standards. The film stars Sam Neill as Grant, a Dinosaur expert whose job is digging up fossilized dinosaurs. Helping him is Ellie (Laura Dern), his girlfriend and co-worker. One day, at a dig site, they meet Dr. Hammond (Oscar winning director Richard Attenborough) who invites them to be some of the first people to see his new theme park. Once there, they are amazed to find that Hammond has found a way (using fossilized DNA) to recreate living dinosaurs and his theme park, Jurassic Park, will give the public the opportunity to see these long extinct creatures. Aboard a jeep that moves through the park, Grant with Hammond's two grandchildren and a wisecracking scientist (Jeff Goldblum) they begin to explore Jurassic Park and all its wonders. Pretty soon, due to an untrustworthy employee of the park, the power is out and the dinosaurs are given the chance to run free. One thing Spielberg does that makes this film rise above what it could've been (a movie that was popular the summer it came out and quickly disappeared...You all know the kind of movie I'm referring too) is by doing the same thing he did with "Jaws." We see some dinosaurs early on in the film, but before the big reveal (in this case being the T-Rex) he allows us to meet the characters and get a good feel on the plot. Once that's been established an hour into the film, Spielberg unleashes all the monsters. "Jurassic Park" is not a masterpiece of cinema, it's not a great film, but it's entertaining and still interesting...Me writing this is pointless though, because I'm sure that you've already seen it. But, whatever, there's my opinion.

GRADE: B+

5 out of 5 stars You'll believe dinosaurs walked the Earth........2007-05-14

When I was driving home from the theater after this movie, I did look at birds differently. I swore any minute a dinosaur could run out from behind a building. This is and was the best dinosaur movie I've ever seen. Who doesn't like a good dino movie? And how old is it now and it still holds up well against other movies' special effects today.

As for the story, some will say it's slow, but I think the pacing is perfect and although kids now a days might think there isn't enough action, I think the build up to the first time you see the Tyrannosaurus Rex attack is one of the greatest moments in movie cinema. It's intense, scary, even funny, and best of all you don't think about the special effects because you're watching a real 8 ton monster wreak havoc. The movie is worth this scene alone and then when the raptors come you'll be jumping and at the edge of your seat.

Love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars 365 Million Reasons to Watch.......2007-04-11

What do you get when you mix the collaborative efforts of Steven Spielberg, John Williams, and Stan Winston? Simply put, the greatest film ever made! The directing is superb, the music is unforgettable, and the visual effects are never to be matched. "Jurassic Park" brings it all to the table in an adventure film for the ages.
I will never forget going to see this movie in the theaters when I was nine years old. For a nine year old to sit down and watch this is mind-blowing to say the least. It was in that moment that I realized I was a "movie person". I was already a huge fan of Spielberg's "E.T.", but now I had another movie to love. This is THE MOVIE!

John Wayne's most popular vehicle of the 1960s is a broad, boisterous comedy-Western and a family movie in every sense--in subject matter, casting, personnel, and the audience it aims to bear-hug. Wayne and his Quiet Man partner Maureen O'Hara reprise their large-boned lovers' quarrel in a Wild West variation on The Taming of the Shrew, while a cast of familiar supporting players do their best to avoid becoming collateral damage.

The picture is fascinating as an attempt to adjust and update the Duke as all-American icon. Rancher George Washington McLintock owns most of the town that bears his name, but James Edward Grant's screenplay is at didactic pains to establish the benevolence and socio-political enlightenment of his reign. G.W.'s former Indian foes have become his pals, he enjoys nothing so much as playing chess with his Jewish merchant buddy (Jack Kruschen), and he's tolerant--as his fellow landowners are not--of the homesteaders crowding into the territory. In what now seems like prescience about where things were headed in the 1960s, he even does his best to achieve rapport with (gasp!) impatient youth.

McLintock! was the first movie produced by eldest son Michael Wayne, and the first major assignment for director Andrew V. McLaglen (son of Quiet Man costar Victor). It steals like a bandit from a host of much better movies, but the Duke's great good humor and professionalism redoubtably anchor the proceedings. --Richard T. Jameson

Thank you! This is the version everyone has been waiting for - all the scenes in wide-screen theater format - all the dialog is back - no more awkward, out-of-place close-ups. It was a joy to sit and watch as it was intended, to share with my wife and kids. I was amazed that even some of the hidden, background, dialog, by Ching especially, has been brought back.
Frankly, it was worth the wait for Hollywood to get it right.

I LOVE this movie I've seen it probably more than 100 times! So imagine how excited I was to see it for like 5 bucks at Wal-Mart.... this particular copy is sitting next to me right now and all can say is I was really mad when I sat and watched it, the editing is horrible there are times when the camera zooms on people it shouldn't, lines are cut out and sometimes there are voices but no one's lips are moving. Buy the authorized version not this one this one sucks.

Although scarcely seen in its original 3-D, and entirely out of sight for a decade and a half after its producer-star died, Hondo has maintained a high rep among John Wayne fans--and it wasn't even directed by Howard Hawks or John Ford. (Actually, Ford did shoot some second-unit stuff while visiting Wayne on location.) Half-breed Hondo, companioned only by an antisocial dog, tends to be more sympathetic toward the Apaches than toward the white society he occasionally scouts for. He falls into uneasy friendship with a New Mexico farmwoman (Geraldine Page) whose husband deserts her for long stretches, and whose son (Lee Aaker) is blood brother to the local Apache chieftain. A good, spare frontier tale--Louis L'Amour via James Edward (Angel and the Badman) Grant--in which danger and solace come in unexpected ways. John Farrow, who did direct, brings it in at a lean 84 minutes. Page was Oscar ®-nominated for this first film role. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Based on the Louis L'Amour story "The Gift of Cochise," this sparkling western has Wayne as a half-Indian Cavalry scout who, with his feral dog companion, finds a young woman and her son living on a isolated ranch in unfriendly Apache country. A poetic and exciting script, outstanding performances, and breathtaking scenery make this an indisputable classic. Page's debut.

The best John Wayne western not directed by John Ford or Howard Hawks, "Hondo" shows the Duke at the peak of his powers. Helmed by John Farrow (Mia's dad), the film is stunningly photographed, with a tight, trim story brought to life by a luminous Page (in her film debut), the ever-reliable Ward Bond as Hondo's friend Buffalo Baker, and Michael Pate as Vittorio, the Apache chief. Also look for James Arness in a pivotal role- he'd go on to make his career in Westerns on TV's long-running "Gunsmoke".

5 out of 5 stars The Duke.......2007-05-06

I love John Wayne, so anything thing he does is fine with me. Typical Wayne western. Wonderful, colorful, authentic Wayne fare. Amazon had the best price.

5 out of 5 stars A superb western.......2007-04-12

Hondo is a mighty impressive film. It is that rare western that greatly succeeds on on a technical level, as well as an emotional level.
John Wayne and co-star Geraldine Page have amazing chemistry, and child actor Lee Aaker is wonderful and believable as the little boy. (unlike the many phony child actors that were common in the 50s)
The story closely follows the Louis L'Amour novel it was based on, and that is a big plus. It's a very mature and complex tale that is handled with confidence and grace by a great cast, crew and director.
This wonderful film is yet more proof that John Wayne wasn't just an iconic "movie star," but this man was a superb actor in all regards.
Highly recommended.

Another good one from the " Classic Western Star" a must have for your collection.

John Wayne has again made a wonderful movie, now available on DVD.
I have never seen a movie that he made that wasn't great.
The price for this DVD was a great deal!

A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. --Richard T. Jameson

4 out of 5 stars What a ride ... .......2007-06-11

John Wayne's belated Oscar came for 1969's True Grit," a rousing entertainment that didn't stand quite as tall as, say, "Red River" or "The Searchers." Paramount Home Entertainment has released the double-disc set as part of the studio's 100th-year Wayne promotion with Warner Home Video.

The Duke plays one-eyed bounty hunter Rooster Cogburn. Valley girl Kim Darby plays a teen bent on avenging her father's death. Darby, who gives a sensational performance, stood toe-to-toe with Wayne onscreen and off, the bonus features note. Critics of the time thought Darby was in for a major league career, but she went on to a modest but long-running tenure in the business.

The extras aren't deep, but the docu "Working With the Duke" does a decent job of positioning "True Grit" in Wayne's sunsetting career. Perhaps mellowing with age, right-winger Wayne went to bat for the hiring of blacklisted screenwriter Marguerite Roberts, who was "weaned on stories about gunfighters."

The images of Colorado (2.35:1) are suitably sweeping and majestic. An extra feature returns to some of the "True Grit" locations, such as the graphic triple hanging. I experienced none of the softness cited by some of the other reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars An old but still robust oak!.......2007-06-02

"True grit" is a humanizing Western that obviously doesn't lack of the main ingredients, but provided of a superior vision. Booster Cogburn is a one-eye crotchety U.S. Marshall who still can shoot straight.

In this sense we must acknowledge an absolute and even worthy treatment in which concerns originality and profound honesty about the genre that definitively has achieved a true mythic feature.

And so, being Wayne the most complete icon of this genre was more than obvious to suppose he had to star the most variegated gamut of characters in his successful artistic trajectory.

On the other hand, this was the film in which Dennis hopper and Henry Hathaway smoked the cask of the peace after a long chain of misfortunate events between them.

4 out of 5 stars How to fix image quality.......2007-06-01

I had the same problem with image quality as previously posted by another reviewer on May 27, 2007. Mine was blurred, NOT in 2.35:1 and the "Enhanced" setting did not work on my DVD player. Here is what I had to do to fix the image quality problem: go back to startup DVD menu before you select "Play" and change your "Display" to "4:3 Letterbox".

2 out of 5 stars Big problem with the image qualtiy in this movie.......2007-05-27

We have a big mystery here. All the reviews I have read about this movie say the picture quality is great, but the focus is soft. Here is a note I sent to a reviewer on a prominent DVD website. I haven't received a reply yet. If anybody on Amazon knows what the problem is please write in and let us know. Here is my note mentioned above:
"I am puzzled about the lack of sharpness in the focus in this movie. All the long shots and medium shots are definitely soft. I have a top of the line 50" plasma monitor with a lot of DVDs and I worked as a film cameraman for 15 years so I know what a sharp image is supposed to look like. The movie plays in what looks like 1.85 with narrow letterboxing at the top and bottom as normal. The Internet Movie Database says this is a 1.85 film. In that 1.85 aspect ratio the image is soft as I said. However, in the supplemental documentary there are several scenes from the movie that appear to be in about 2.35 or close that look sharp just like they should. But True Grit wasn't a 2.35 scope process movie! What is going on here? I understand if a scope movie is shown in 1.85 the image has been enlarged and it would look soft, but it is a 1.85 movie and it looks soft which usually means the studio messed up the transfer. But your review says the picture is great. I am really puzzled. Can you explain what the problem might be?"

5 out of 5 stars This review is on the special edition.......2007-05-27

Let me be the first to review this Special Edition presentation of True Grit. Since so much reviews have been written about the plot and all, I will go straight to the gest of this review. The special edition is a definite improvement over the previous released editions of True Grit. The colors, image and everything appears to be more clearer, vivid and cleaner. The sound also improved as well and overall, any true fan of this movie will upgrade to this edition. The extra features also proves to be quite nice and they are well worth the time and effort to view as well.

This movie may not be one of John Wayne's finest effort (I thought his work in the Searchers was superior) but it represent everything there is about John Wayne in one package. His Oscar is well deserved and the captured of his character, Rooster Cogburn, is near perfect. As a friend of mine's once said, "Wayne can only play Wayne", but he does it so superbly that it virtually off set most actors playing other characters. True Grit is a great movie and this Special Edition does pretty good justice to the film.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rio Bravo.......2007-06-26

Hawks's colorful, exciting western boasts an archetypal, larger-than-life turn from the Duke, and perhaps Martin's finest acting job ever as Dude. Film neatly blends pathos, suspense, comedy, even songs to create top-notch entertainment. Look also for Ricky Nelson as Colorado (he and Dino get to croon together), and the leggy, alluring Angie Dickinson as Feathers, a young woman with her eye on Chance. Bravo indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Review of ACTUAL Release.......2007-06-23

I believe at this point in time I'm unique in that I seem to be the only reviewer who's going to attempt a comprehensive review of the Two-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition of Rio Bravo. Since I also own the original DVD release, I can compare the two prints (although to be honest, I loaned it to my Russian doctoral advisor a few years ago and he seems loath to part with it; however, the extras include unrestored scenes which can form the basis). We all KNOW that this is "the greatest Western that John Ford never made," otherwise, why would we be on this page? So rather than preach to the converted (which is basically a waste of time), this review will concentrate on the extras and the print itself.
To be honest, I prefer the older release for print quality. Given that this film was shot in Technicolor, I would assume that Warner would do the right thing and not tweak the original color values (I'm guessing that Rio Bravo wouldn't be a candidate for Warner/AOL's Edge Enhancement restoration because it was probably shot on one strip of film rather than three). But this print looks 'way too dark compared to the first release, with a rather significant loss of detail in the night and interior shots. To be honest, the detail is excellent in the brighter shots, but overall, I think the earlier release looks better and is immediately recognizable as Technicolor; this one almost looks like it's DeLuxe or Eastman. Okay...maybe it's not quite THAT bad, but I don't think it's an upgrade--everyone is orange, including the horses.
I don't know exactly what the stated audio restoration entailed, but it sounds great. There's an excellent commentary by Richard Schickel and John Carpenter (who are clearly having the time of their lives), an alternate French audio track, and subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and--of all things--Korean. There are also a number of trailers for Wayne's B westerns, culminating in one for Rio Bravo.
The extras on the second disk include three documentaries which are all deserving of the proverbial enthusiastic thumbs-up. The first is an installment of Schickel's series The Men Who Made the Movies which focuses on Howard Hawks; the second is titled Commemoration: Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo that features (among others) the ubiquitous Peter Bogdanovich (whom I find irritating almost beyond enduring) and Walter Hill and which, in spite of my aversion, I found enjoyable; everyone involved is a serious Rio Bravo fan and has something of interest to contribute. The final installment is called Old Tucson: Where the Legends Walked; this tells the story of what was to become the Old Tucson Studio and which is the location on which Rio Bravo was shot. This was all new to me and, like the other two documentaries, was lots of fun. For those interested, there are Portuguese and Korean subtitles.
We now come to the non-video extras. You may have read mention of "a comic book" that's included with this set. What ISN'T mentioned is that it's a miniature reprint of a 10¢ Dell comic book that was released for sale concurrent with the film's theatrical release (these weren't uncommon during that time period, now that I think of it). Also included is a miniature of what looks to be a promotional catalogue intended for theater owners, explaining how best to promote the film.
Finally, there's a nice set of miniature theater cards that somehow managed to get somewhat mangled in their sleeve. Since the trays that hold the disks were damaged when I received my set and are therefore being returned, I'm hoping for better things next time around. Everything is beautifully packaged as a series of folders within a heavy, vellum-textured slipcase.
I was lucky enough to purchase this with a coupon for about the same price as the list for the Two-Disc Special Edition, so I decided to go for it (I'm a sucker for gimmicks). I don't know if I'd advise purchasing it for list, as the extras, while nice, aren't essential. In fact, I don't even know that this new release is essential. If you already own the original release, there's really no reason to go for this one unless you want the documentaries and commentary. I knocked off a star because I'm really not crazy about the print, there's no hard-copy chapter index (a major pain in the posterior, in my book), the menus are cheesy, plus it's impossible to turn off the audio commentary unless the disk is ejected. Regardless of which release you purchase, Rio Bravo is not only a must-have for anyone who claims to be a Western fan, it belongs in the library of every serious film buff.

5 out of 5 stars Hawks at his (near) best!.......2007-06-05

It doesn't match up to the brilliant perfection of Hawks', "Red River", but it does have a great deal of gentle humor that the other lacks. This was always my third favorite Western after "Red River" and Ford's, "The Searchers". It has a sense of menace and a wonderful story, but it's so breezy and (unintentionally?) light-hearted (you can tell that everyone is having a blast making this film!), it's hard to take it seriously! The best thing to do is just sing along with Dean and Ricky (I always do!), and enjoy the ride!
P.S. It's "Winchester 73'"!

4 out of 5 stars The Duke was always stylish..........2007-06-04

As my birthday is creeping up and this film was released in 59 and I shall turn 59 in June (07) I felt like splurging for the Two Disc Ultimate Rio Bravo. Happy I did. I love westerns but didn't know this film that well, thought I had seen it but realized when I started to unspool it that I had never seen it all the way through. It's a terrific film, I have other westerns favorites that I feel are superior; The Searchers, Winchester 73 (I think that's the caliber), One Eyed Jack etc., but this is very good and the packaging is terrrific. You even get a re print of The Dell comic of the film (reduced in size of course) also there is the advertising circular that Warners sent out to theatre owners. As for the film, it's The Duke at his Dukest and Dean Martin is pretty good, Ricky Nelson could never act but looks good on screen...Angie Dickenson steals the picture...in black tights even. Happy with my purchase and you will be too.

5 out of 5 stars Great,but where,s YELLOWSTONE KELLY/.......2007-05-09

Although The Searchers is my no 1,there is no doubt about the class of Rio Bravo. If the Documentaries are even half as good as The Searchers 50th Anniversary Special Edition then, very well done Warners.

John Wayne personally produced many of his '50s films, which is why some of them have languished in corporate limbo following his death. The High and the Mighty was one of his most popular vehicles (no pun intended). This long, necessarily sedentary drama aboard an endangered airliner is a CinemaScope bridge between 1932's Grand Hotel and 1970s disaster movies. Despite Wayne's iconic presence as a pilot--now copilot--who survived the plane crash that wiped out his family, it's an ensemble movie with an impressive cast: Robert Stack sharing the cockpit, Oscar® nominees Claire Trevor and Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Robert Newton, Paul Kelly, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, the ubiquitous Paul Fix, and director William A. Wellman's good-luck character actor Douglas Fowley. Dimitri Tiomkin's score won the Oscar, though the fondly remembered theme song isn't as prominent as you'd expect. Wings veteran William H. Clothier shot the aerial footage. --Richard T. Jameson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC FOR ALL TIME.......2007-05-31

one of the great motion pictures of all time. so long in limbo and now to see it in the stores and on tv is very rewarding. i remember this when it was on tv in the early sixies in texas. wonderful memories, it is so wonderful to see it in its rightful place. dont listen to the idiotic remarks about it being dated....how assinine of course ...its a movie when the world was a better place...and more trust in the world. so ignore the ignorance. a truly wonderful movie in a wonderful time, beautiful to look at and perfectly done for its time....there was and never will be another JOHN WAYNE a true AMERICAN .. we need more of him. an all time marvelous movie. A 1.

5 out of 5 stars wellman & wayne fly high.......2007-05-12

an all around great movie, with john wayne understated as the vet pilot who keeps his head while others are losing theirs. if youre a fan of "airport" movies, (or more likely "airplane") this long unseen film is a must-see for you. all the cliches start here, from the long character list to the white knuckle action to robert stack! director william wellman manned yet another aviation pic, with wonderful performances from claire trevor (waynes "stagecoach" co star!), jan sterling, robert newton, phil harris, &c. and dont forget that great theme music. also, its a birds eye view into what air travel was like in the pre-jet era. tho "dated", this is a wonderful movie, and well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars The High and the Mighty.......2007-05-07

Although this is drama 50s style, I found the movie hysterical and when John Wayne does a John Wayne I cheer. I love this movie for its unintentual humor. Still great acting.

4 out of 5 stars I was slightly disappointed.......2007-04-12

If for anything, The High and the Mighty can be used as an example as to why John Wayne was a true "superstar."
This film has some impressive cinematography, and several very suspenseful scenes, but in all honesty, it's really a melodramatic, 50s style soap-opera that wasn't very well written or well acted by the cast.
There are, however, two things that really lift this film out of mediocre territory.
The beautiful and haunting score, and the electrifying presence of John Wayne. The Duke dominates every scene he is in, and he's the main reason modern viewers keep watching this very dated film. When the movie is over, the viewer doesn't want to say it was average because of the efforts and accomplishments of Wayne. This may have been a "big and adventurous" film back in it's day, but in the year of 2007, it's entertainment value comes strictly from it's "big and adventurous" lead star. Not very many stars can carry a film like Wayne, and he really shines in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!!!.......2007-02-14

This is a good movie. I've never seen it all the way through before I bought the DVD (TCM and ACM has aired it) and I liked it.

Out of circulation for a quarter-century following the death of producer-star John Wayne, Island in the Sky is a tale of survival focused on the pilot (Wayne) and crew of a DC-3 forced to crashland somewhere in the uncharted Canadian wilderness, and the fellow airmen (Lloyd Nolan, James Arness, Andy Devine, Paul Fix) determined to find them before hunger and the 70-below winter do them in. The movie, set in the post-WWII era when military and commercial aviation were still intertwined, was written by bestselling novelist Ernest K. Gann and directed by William A. Wellman, an aviation-movie veteran whose Wings won the first-ever Academy Award (1927-28).

Wellman resolutely downplays the histrionics and conventional heroics; Wayne indulges in none of the macho posturing that his detractors carelessly identify him with, and the crewman who breaks rank in a bid for salvation meets a grim, almost mythically absurd demise. But Wellman also condoned (and himself speaks) the ill-advised narration that aims to tell us what's going on inside the stoic characters. The director does better with throwaway details like the ice pick kept handily embedded in a barracks wall so that pilots can break the frozen skin on their morning wash water. And there's a distinctive war council among the search pilots when no one's quite sure what to do next--the wrong decision could doom the missing crew--and so no one looks anybody else in the face. The black-and-white cinematography by Archie Stout (dramatic scenes) and William H. Clothier (flying scenes) leaves nothing to be desired, and in this crisp restoration it sometimes literally glows.

DVD features
The extras include production reminiscences by William Wellman Jr., assistant director Andrew V. McLaglen, and supporting players Darryl Hickman and Harry Carey Jr.; a short essay on the art of aerial cinematography; and an intriguing profile of Ernest K. Gann, who in his teens directed and starred in a motion picture of sorts. Wayne, Wellman, and Gann reteamed to create The High and the Mighty, much nominated for 1954 Oscars. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars island in the sky.......2007-05-31

i realy enjoyed the film i liked the plot and the danger also i am a big john wayne fan

3 out of 5 stars Textbook professionalism.......2007-05-29

As filmmaking, William Wellman's long unseen Island in the Sky is textbook professionalism about textbook professionals - in this case John Wayne's pilot and his crew downed in uncharted Labrador and the various pilots trying to locate them before a storm finishes them off. There are no surprises (aside from the horrific sight of Andy Devine in swim trunks!), there's an excess of narration at times (much of it delivered by Wellman himself), and it doesn't stand up to the best of Wellman's aviation pictures, but it's good, solid entertainment, convincingly staged and boasting a superb Tiomkinesque score by Emil Newman.

The extras package on Paramount's DVD is pretty impressive as well, boasting a good selection of featurettes, an interesting audio commentary from the director's son and supporting cast members, stills gallery, newsreel footage and even John Wayne's introduction to co-star James Arness' Gunsmoke TV series.

4 out of 5 stars Island in the Sky.......2007-01-04

The only drawback from total 5 stars for this old DUKE classic is I wish someone would have "colorized" it by now. It brought back fond memories of a simpler time when we actually HAD TO CARE for each other.

4 out of 5 stars Island in the Sky.......2006-07-05

A good look at aviation of the 1950's. Good cast and charactors. Story keeps your interest. Great photography, too bad it was not in color.

Amazon.com essential video
