2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the other reviewers said!.......2004-11-18

I don't know why the other reviews rated this disc so highly. The package may say it is digitally MASTERED but it is NOT digitally REmastered! There was no restoration work done on this disc whatsoever, and it shows. The quality is barely passable, and probably was dubbed off older vhs tapes. I think the other reviewers were just so ecstatic that these episodes were even available on DVD that their judgement got the best of them. In summary, if you can find this disc for a couple of bucks go for it, otherwise, you'd be better off getting the Rifleman and Wagon Train on other DVD editions.

5 out of 5 stars Wagons Ho !.......2001-11-07

During the 1950's these three shows became a family must see. For a whole generation of us born in the 40's and 50's this is a nostalgic trip back to a more innocent time. The quality of these recordings is excellent, keeping them in black and white is true to their time. Anyone wishing to revisit Rowdy Yates, Chuck Conner or Ward Bond will find these invaluable. It is amazing too see how simple the plots and the parts were, relying instead on our connection to the actors character. You won't want to miss it.

5 out of 5 stars FOUR WESTERN CLASSICS INTO ONE.......2001-06-21

I must tell you I thought I was getting only one episode on "The Wagon Train" and another one on the "Death Valley Days". To my delightful surprise, that is a double sided DVD and brings you not only two of the best tv classic westerns ever made, but four tv classic westerns: "Death Valley Days" ("Dear Teacher" & "Sego Lillies"); "Wagon Train" ("The Dr. Denker Story"); "Bat Masterson" ("The Fighter" & "Stampede at Tent City") and "The Rifleman" ("Outlaw's Inheritance" & "Mail Order Groom"). Without a doubt, that is one of the best DVDs in my modest, but selected collection. It comes in a very nice case with short, but great information on the shows. It has an interactive menu, scene selector, dolby digital, trivia quiz and biography of the famous stars of the classic western shows in it. It was digitally mastered and was made in Canada. The 7 (seven) episodes on the DVD were nicely and competently chosen among the various good episodes on the shows. If you are a tv western classic fanatic like me or even if you want to have a really good DVD just added to your collection, that is a must!

Description

"The Ponderosa" is the exciting prequel to the classic western television series "Bonanza." The series chronicles the early years of widower Ben Cartwright and his three sons Adam 21, Hoss 17 and Little Joe 12. In these first 10 episodes from Season 1, the family acquires a small piece of scrub in the wilds of the Nevada Territory, called "The Ponderosa." Together with their extended family including Hop Sing and Carloss the Cartwright's make a go of it against all odds. Relive the struggles and triumphs of life on the old western frontier through these beloved stories and characters created by "Bonanza" Executive Producer David Dortort.

4 out of 5 stars Ponderosa Season 1.......2006-08-15

It was fantastic.
The music is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I would hire it,buy it just on that alone.
Bruce Rowland, the Austalian composer is a genius.

4 out of 5 stars Prequel to the TV Classic from Down Under.......2006-05-19

The setting is supposed to be Nevada, but "The Ponderosa" has Australia written all over it. The series was filmed in Victoria, Australia and none other than Simon Wincer, the veteran Australian director of the original "Lonesome Dove" mini series and theatrical films like "Quigley Down Under," is in the director's chair for the two-part pilot episode. A few of the lead actors (Daniel Hugh Kelly and Brad Dourif, most notably) are Americans, but most of the supporting cast and guest cast are Australian, a few of whom are even recognizable to American audiences. Mark Lee, who co-starred (with Mel Gibson) in Peter Weir's classic World War I film "Gallipoli" has a prominent role in one episode as does Lewis Fitz-Gerald, who appeared as one of the court-martialed soldiers in another Australian cinema classic, Bruce Beresford's "Breaker Morant."

As to the episodes, there are some liberties taken with the original Bonanza storyline and some of the stories are a bit on the PC, preachy side, but the acting and production values are strong for this series. In fact, I prefer the town and ranch settings in this series over the original "Bonanza" series, which used studio sets more than this prequel series does. "The Ponderosa" also seems to be more mindful of authenticity, as you can see the actor's breaths when they speak in some episodes that were filmed on chilly days and the town's streets are often very muddy after a rainfall.

The 10 episodes in this set are spread over 3 discs (3 episodes on discs 1 and 3; four episodes on disc 2). The visuals are beautifully rendered on DVD and, in that respect, fans and newcomers (like me) to this series will not be disappointed. However, it's a bit surprising for such a relatively recent series that no extras whatsoever are included on this set . . . no interviews, episode commentaries, etc. I would have been especially interested in seeing some biographies/filmographies for the cast, particularly those Australian cast members with whom I had no familiarity prior to seeing this series.

Fans of TV Westerns have had relatively little in the way of new shows over the last few decades, so even if it comes from the Land Down Under, "The Ponderosa" is a welcome addition. Yee haa, mates!

1 out of 5 stars Bonanza, revisionist style .......2005-07-25

Don't waste you money on this piece of PC trash disguised as a prequel to Bonanza. The stories are unashamedly chock-full of PC themes.
For example: Ben nearly has a stroke when, on his 21st birthday, Adam expresses a desire to own a gun. Shocking! Ben lets Adam know how displeased he is. Ben says that guns are only used to kill people. By the end of this ep, Adam has embraced Ben's twisted ideology.
Every ep is full of this leftist revisionist thinking. An Indian fighter is derided as the scum of the earth by Ben(let's remember how Inger was killed)..women are given an equal voice in the town government; by the way, the town's name is Eagle Station, not Virginia City.
Besides these faults, Bonanza history is tampered with. Maria is killed in an explosion, instead of falling from a horse. Hoss gets his nickname after Joe's pony bites him on the behind. As for Joe, he's hardly ever seen. Hop Sing's character is unrecognizable.
I have nothing wrong with the actors. Especially the guy who did Hoss--I thought he was perfect for the roll as was the guy for Adam.
I watched this series from the first show to the last show. I was excited about the prospects of a Bonanza prequel, but I was sadly misled and disappointed. Each episode I hoped the writers would start listening to the viewers. They never did. Unless you can overlook this revisionist view of Bonanza, I suggest you save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Good family fare........2004-07-03

"The Ponderosa" is a prequel to Bonanza that is authorized and supported by Bonanza's producer, David Dortort, and was produced by Beth Sullivan. The story takes place in about 1849-50 on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Eagle Valley, Western Utah Territory, site of present-day Carson City, Nevada. Like its predecessor, the show is suitable for family viewing, packaging strong family values in stories that are adventurous, fun, or filled with action and conflict.

Purist Bonanza fans will find some difficult changes in the concept, such as the relative ages of the Cartwright sons, how Marie died, and particularly how Hoss got his nickname. In addition, the show was filmed in Victoria, Australia, a lush and lovely location with similarities to the Sierras, but those who've actually been to the drier and more starkly spectacular Lake Tahoe area may be a bit disappointed. Once past these aberrations, though, the show is loyal to the spirit of Bonanza.

Filmed for HDTV, the package includes ten episodes on three disks, each approximately 45 minutes. Stars are Daniel Hugh Kelly (Ben Cartwright), Matt Carmody (Adam), Drew Powell (Hoss), Jared Daperis (Little Joe), Gareth Yuen (Hop Sing), Brad Dourif (Frenchy Devereaux), Josephine Byrnes (Margaret Green), Sara Gleeson (Tess Green), Nicki Wendt (Shelby Sterrett), Fernando Carillo (Carlos Rivera de Vega), Petru Gheorghiu (Eli Orowitz), Abbe Holms (Ruth Orowitz), Don Halbert (Jack Roberts), Bruce Dickinson (Big Dan Larson), and two different actresses for Isabella Rivera de Vega, Marcella Toro (ep 6-7) and Jacqueline Aries (ep 10-16).

Rumors say there will be a second DVD set with the remaining ten episodes, but no official information is available as of the date of this review.

1 & 2 - Pilot: Provides the story of how the Cartwrights came to live on the Ponderosa, including some revisionist history. Originally aired 9/9/2001.

3 - Joaquin: The title character is Joaquin Murieta, a historical figure that some say was bandit, others say hero. He creates havoc when he arrives in Eagle Valley, including showing Adam how to shoot against Ben's wishes. Originally aired 9/16/2001.

4 - Bare Knuckles: A rift develops between Hoss and Ben when Hoss wants to enter a bare-knuckles fight with champion Iron Hands Malloy. Adam discovers that Malloy has been expelled from the official fighting circuit for cheating, but is too late to stop Hoss from fighting. Originally aired 9/23/2001.

5 - The Promise: Adam kills a man who is robbing Ben at gunpoint, then promises the dying man he'll take care of his family, even though it means disrupting his plans for his own life. In a second storyline, a man claiming to be the great-grandson of George Washington's personal slave has artifacts to sell. Originally aired 9/30/2001.

6 - Homeland: Carlos, the Cartwright's foreman, believed his sister, Isabella, died in the war with Mexico, and she believed the same of him. Their reunion is spoiled by a Texas lawman who accuses Isabella of murder. Originally aired 10/142001.

7 - Quarantine: Cholera strikes when Ben hosts a neighborhood dinner. Vigilantes blame the Cartwrights and vow to burn them out. Originally aired 10/28/2001.

8 - Secrets & Lies: A man whose adopted son survived the Donner Party disaster wants Adam to write the true story of what happened, but just seeing the boy brings back painful memories for Ben. At the same time, Shelby and Maurice harbor secrets that come to light. Originally aired 11/4/2001.

9 - The Legend of John Riley: An American who fought for Mexico visits the Cartwrights and causes conflict when Hoss, who considers him a traitor, can't understand how Carlos could call the man a hero. Originally aired 11/18/2001.

10 - Brother Against Brother: A ladies' choice dance causes problems for the Cartwrights when Ben is sought by Margaret and Shelby, and when Isabella asks Adam before Tess can, even though Hoss expects to be asked by Tess. Originally aired 12/2/2001.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Prequel.......2004-02-21

The Ponderosa is an excellent portrayel of the Cartwright's before they became the rich landowners they were on Bonanza. I have seen every episode.Although the storyline sometime strayed from the original, the show was becoming more Bonanza-like as the season progressed. The actors,Daniel Hugh Kelley,Matt Carmody, Drew Powell, and Jared Daperis did an excellent job portraying the younger Cartwright's. I highly recommend The Ponderosa!

2 out of 5 stars dark and bad sound.......2007-01-22

I got this for my 7 and 10 year old boys who are really into Robin Hood now. They watched the old disney movie of Robin Hood and loved it. However, the picture in this is often very dark making it difficult to see the actors. Also the sound is very bad. Some of the plots are a little boring. But I think my kids would still be okay with watching them if it was better quality. I wanted something not so violent or fraught with sexual innuendo, which this isn't. I just wish it was easier to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Buy By The Season!.......2006-05-10

I purchased from Amazon.co.uk each of the four seasons of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" - all 143 episodes - for about $20 per season.

Digital transfer was excellent and our entire family has enjoyed the series. Packaging involved sturdy plastic cases, each containing 2 DVD's, with 8 episodes per disk. I found this a great value and wanted to recommend it to others interested in the Robin Hood series.

5 out of 5 stars Best volume of the batch so far.......2006-04-08

This DVD contains 4 of the better episodes of the Classic 50's TV series.

THE ROAD IN THE AIR is a great yarn about a lord determined to take over a mill by forcing people to pay a toll to get to it.

CARLOTTA is an excellent story of Little John falling for a dancer from London. Is she a spy for the Sheriff and even if she is not what will Joan the barmaid (His previous interest) of the Blue Boar say or do about it?

THE GOLDMAKER tells of an alchemist who finds himself at Sir Richard's Castle, does he really have the secret of making pewter into gold? What will Robin and the Sheriff do about it if he does? (The episode THE GOLDMAKER'S RETURN was in Vol II, by rights their positions should have been reversed).

THE SCIENTIST tell of a man who has the potential to create a weapon able to defeat King Richard before he even lands back into England. Is Prince John tilting at windmills or does Robin have to take a hand?

A lot of quality for a small investment.

well i found all?(i guess this is all) of the shows for this little heard of western show from the 50's!! the plot has 2 agents of the railroad go after a real outlaw of the west. the show is very well written and acted and worth a look if you love westerns like me!

3 out of 5 stars Legends of the Old West.......2005-07-11

Bought this four-disk set off the shelf of a national retailer at a deep, deep discount without having a clue what it contained. I discovered that they contained 40-some episodes of a mid-1950s television series named `Stories of the Century,' as well as three bonus episodes of another series I'll get to in a minute. Anyway, at a dime an episode I was pleased with this set.
`Stories of the Century' was a syndicated western that was filmed in 1954 and lasted, as far as I can tell, for about two seasons. It starred Jim Davis - later Jock Ewing of `Dallas' fame - as railroad detective Matt Clark. Mary Castle, a Rita Hayworth look-alike stars in a majority of the episodes as fellow detective Frankie Adams, Kristine Miller in some as Margaret `Jonesie" Jones. Each episode had the railroad detectives tracking down one of the many true-life bad guys of the wild west. Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr, the Dalton Gang... you name `em, this series chased `em. And caught `em. (That the story featured criminals who were active from about 1865 to about 1905 begs the question of how Clark and Frankie and Jonesie managed to stay so young for so long. My guess is that it was all that clean living. Matt and Frankie and Jonesie don't seem to have an existence beyond their job, and hanky-panky of any sort isn't even hinted at.)
Their value as present day entertainment is going to depend a lot on what you're looking for. Each episode opens with a flat, Joe Friday-like voice over introduction by Davis announcing this week's criminal and their claim to infamy. After a short scene of the criminal(s) criming we learn why Matt and Frankie or Jonesie are chasing them. If they're like Belle Starr (Marie Windsor) and they rustle cattle rather than rob trains, they rustle cattle being transported by the railroad. Matt and Frankie or Jonesie investigate, get the goods on the bad guys, chase them, have a shoot-out, and, usually, leave the bad guy as a lifeless husk.
Although the series is sprinkled with interesting characters actors - Windsor (Belle Starr), Richard Jaeckel (Billy the Kid), Slim Pickens (The Smiling (later Sundance) Kid), Jack Elam (Black Jack Ketchum) - there's a dulling sameness about things. Billy the Kid comes off pretty much the same as Frank and Jesse James, the Younger Brothers, and all the rest of them. It's diversionary entertainment at best, especially intended for the undemanding.
Surprisingly - to me, at least - `Stories of the Century' won the Emmy in 1955 for Best Western or Adventure Series, beating out the `Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok' (Guy Madison & Andy Devine), `Annie Oakley' (Gail Davis), `Death Valley Days' (then hosted by Stanley Andrews), and `The Roy Rogers Show.'
Also included are three episodes of `Judge Roy Bean,' from 1956 and starring Edgar Buchanan in the title role. The `Judge Roy Bean' episodes are in color - `Stories of the Century' is in black and white - but the color is severely faded. Buchanan as always is interesting but the three stories were clearly directed at a young and easily satisfied audience.
LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST is recommended with a lot of caveats for the emptor. Either way, if you can grab them out of the bargain bin you might be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Best "Stories of the Century" Collection.......2005-01-28

This 4-disc set is a really good deal for fans of old TV westerns. In this set are practically all of the installments of "Stories of the Century", a western that ran from 1954-55, along with a handful of the early color series "Judge Roy Bean".

"Stories of the Century" starred Jim Davis (who we all know and love as Jock Ewing from the "Dallas" TV series). Davis plays Matt Clark, Railroad Detective, who along with his female partner Frankie (Mary Castle, season 1), or Jonsey (Kristine Miller, season 2), somehow manage to involve themselves in just about every effort to capture all of the famous outlaws the Old West produced. Strangely enough, they never seem to age despite covering cases that range from 1850-1910.

The idea of the main character being a railroad investigator is pretty clever, as it makes sense for a railroad "cinder sleuth" to have a hand in stopping or investigating many of the outlaws' raids.

All of the bad guys are famous western outlaws (like Quantrell's Raiders, or Jesse James), and this lends an air of authenticity to the show. Most of the stories are fairly accurate as to the overall events surrounding the outlaws' criminal activities and eventual punishments. However, at times the presence of Clark and his partner seems just a tad bit contrived.

In any case, Davis owns the series. While his female partners can seem a bit overly-helpless at times, Davis' Clark character is both brains and brawn enough to tangle with any threat that comes along. With such a commanding presence, it really makes you wonder why Davis never became a major TV or movie star, and why he had to wait until the late '70s to find fame again on "Dallas" (even then, Davis was more or less a supporting player).

Famous character actors pop up throughout the series, such as Denver Pyle, Slim Pickens, James Best, Lee Van Cleef, Fess Parker, Glenn Strange, James Craven, Sheb Wooley, John Dehner, Jack Elam, and others, who will all be familiar to western fans.

The show was produced by Republic Pictures' television division. Bolstered by Republic's huge library of stock footage from the many westerns they made, there are plenty of stunts and chases seamlessly worked in around the new footage of Clark and his investigations.
