Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic Western Roundup.......2007-07-02

Well going in I had high hopes based on earlier reviews concerning Canyon Passage. That turned out to be a pretty good old style western. If all of the other movies had the same standard then the disk would have been rated 5 stars. The others are good but not as good as CP and that is what brought it down. All of the fils were pretty well played, good plot development and any fan of the old stuff should like this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Non-shoot-out Movie About the West.......2007-05-22

Fine picture of mostly non-violent pioneers in the Pacific Northwest. A loyal rendering of Ernest Haycox's novel. Dana Andrews stalwart as Logan, the shopkeeper, Susan Hayward as sweet and loyal Lucy, Brian Aherne as Lucy's fiancee, with a problem with gambling. Hoagy Carmichael is a townsman, who introduced his theme song "Old Buttermilk Sky," Lloyd Bridges a gold prospector, Ward Bond a sweaty ruffian. One for kids to see it wasn't all saloons and gunmen who settled the West.

5 out of 5 stars Great Western fare, thanks to Universal.......2007-02-16

This is volume I of the two volume set of Classic Westerns to be issued by Universal, and it includes four excellent oaters, and if past history is any guide, Universal will give us great transfers in excellent color (where the movies are in color). Fred MacMurray (THE TEXAS RANGERS) was an accomplished Western actor, with not only THE TEXAS RANGERS to his credit but classics such as AT GUNPOINT, GUN FOR A COWARD, GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING, QUANTEZ, and others demonstrating his prowess in the genre. He doesn't disappoint here. CANYON PASSAGE was one of Dana Andrews finest roles, and it's a excellent picture, with Hoagy Carmichael providing some delightful music. Audie Murphy stars in KANSAS RAIDERS, and doesn't disappoint (his legion of fans will be delighted!). Finally, Rock Hudson, again a fine Westerner, is very fine in THE LAWLESS BREED. In sum, four very fine and entertaining Westerns, which, along with volume II, should please Western fans and movie viewers in general.

5 out of 5 stars Our thanks to Universal...for Great Western fare.......2007-02-16

This is volume 2 of two box sets to be released by Universal, and containing some mighty fine oaters. If past history is any guide, the transfers will excellent, the color great, and the presentation superior! THE TEXANS was one Randolph Scott's first major "A" Western roles, and while the film was criticized as a bit "wooden," it nevertheless is an entertaining film that details the great post-war cattle drives from Texas north. Great supporting cast. Ray Milland is usually not thought of as a Western star, but, as he demonstrates here in CALIFORNIA (and later in COPPER CANYON) he is quite capable in the saddle. Glenn Ford, in THE MAN FROM THE ALAMO, stands out as an accused "deserter" who must prove his bona fides and his honor. Lastly, there is more Audie Murphy--a cause for rejoicing, indeed, with his THE CIMARRON KID (and in vol. 1, his KANSAS RAIDERS). These boxes are reasonabley priced, and all I can add, is "pardner, you'll not be disappointed." Our thanks to Universal!

    Description

Olympic swimming champion Buster Crabbe was one of the most talented B movie actors, and his engaging personality was often responsible for the successes of a great many Western thrillers of the thirties and forties, as well as for his famous Flash Gordon character. Billy the Kid returns to the screen to fight for law and order in Fugitive of the Plains (1943), as he infiltrates an outlaw gang in order to clear his name of a crime. Wild Horse Phantom (1944), Billy and Fuzzy trail a gang of outlaws to an old mine, but it seems that the robbers are unable to remember where they hid the stolen money. In Western Cyclone (1943), Billy the Kid (Buster Crabbe) has been framed for murder by an outlaw gang. In Sheriff of Sage Valley (1942), Buster Crabbe gets to play dual roles, that of Billy the Kid and his own twin brother, Kansas Ed. Billy and his pals travel to Sage Valley where Billy is made Sheriff. Kansas Ed, who is a dead ringer, captures Billy and now plans to run the town as Sheriff. The third movie in this epic (Battle of Chief Pontiac) does not play. May I please exchange it for a fully functional copy? Otherwise, my husband loved it. Great for the grandkids to watch, too.

4 out of 5 stars nice transfer of these movies, and a good price.......2006-06-15

the transfers of these movies are nice and that helps, but to call these movies classic is a big leap. still some good cowboy and indian movies!

4 out of 5 stars Classic is an apt term.......2003-12-02

Of the three movies, Sitting Bull (starring Iron Eyes Cody) and Battles of Chief Pontiac (Movie is in Black & White but is appropriate for the setting and date, stars Lon Chaney, Jr. and Lex Barker)are the best. Even tho Cry Blood, Apache is a poor third, the set is well worth the money. The injustices done to the American Indian is clearly and, I think, fairly presented.

      4 out of 5 stars A Great Family Movie.......2007-02-14

Another great family film and it was the first of four starring Robert Logan who in this film plays the role of Gambler Zachariah Coop, Heather Rattray plays the role of Holly Smith and Mark Edward Hall plays the role of Jason Smith. Coop who's on horse back is running from 6 men who are looking to skin him alive. After Coop loose, his horse he runs into Holly and Jason Smith who's on their way to Oregon. Coop tries to hook up with the kids but they don't trust him. Therefore, Across the Great Divide the kids go with Mr. Coop following them. The Kids deal with many hazards while on their way and the only question that remains, do they make and is Mr. Coop with them. The movie it's self I would give a six however, when you add in the country and its beauty through out the movie then this movie jumps to a 9. This was the first of three films that Heather Rattray did with Robert Logan and Rattray when on years later to play Victoria Newman on the Young and The Restless Soap Opera.

3 out of 5 stars I remember this one, too........2006-11-28

And I have very fond memories of it. Good clean family fun; if that still has any validity these days anymore.

Oh, and Movie Gal, it was released in 1976.

4 out of 5 stars What a blast from the past!.......2004-10-08

This movie was a childhood staple for me. I can recall countless times I watched this movie with my grandparents - so I do consider myself a very reliable source for a review.
It's a great movie for these reasons: it's an adventure that will keep your interest, it's witty enough to cause a chuckle or two and there is nothing remotely "adult" about it (other than a running theme of an alcoholic gambler). It's also very obvious that the movie was made in the 80's on a small, small budget, so don't expect the almost flawless effects you see in kids movies today. Also, the story is set in America's Frontier Era, so be prepared for some not-so-understanding viewpoints from the characters concerning Native Americans and animal hunting (think "Little House on the Prairie" without all the sticky-sweet endings and less crying from Pa).
Here's the story: An alcoholic, drifting gambler comes across two orphaned kids and their dog trying to travel across Oregon. Thinking he can con them into giving him some food and shelter from all the people who are after him, he takes up with the kids on their journey and the rest of the movie is devoted to their adventures along the way to their destination (and maybe, just maybe, the drifter comes to form a bond with the orphans...maybe).

The Proud Ones: The main draw (and quick draw) of this 1956 Western is the marvelous presence of Robert Ryan in the lead role. This underappreciated actor plays a Kansas marshal with a history of perceived cowardice in his past. Everything comes to a head in a single week: a cattle drive ends in town, bringing shootin' and hollerin'; Ryan's nemesis, a casino-runner played by veteran bad guy Robert Middleton, arrives to soak the suckers; and young hotshot Jeffrey Hunter, whose father was killed by Ryan, arrives with revenge on his mind. Oh, and Ryan himself begins to suffer from blinding headaches. Despite the crowded plot, the results are Fifties Western boilerplate, with few distinguishing features beyond the cast. But the supporting ranks are crowded with essential horse-saga actors: Walter Brennan, Arthur O'Connell, Rodolfo Acosta, and of course the bearded, lizard-eyed Middleton. Virginia Mayo plays Ryan's hotel-keeper ladyfriend. Ace cinematographer Lucien Ballard gets a few good outdoor CinemaScope set-ups into the generally backlot feel of the thing. But the reason to see the film is lanky Robert Ryan, whose compelling mix of neurosis, gentleness, and fury is on full display here. --Robert Horton

Forty Guns: Forty Guns is the most rampantly sexualized Western ever made, and the most outrageous of Samuel Fuller's late-'50s B movies. Fuller's original title was "Woman with a Whip," referring to the hard-riding range baroness--Barbara Stanwyck, sporting silver hair and (most of the time) black, skintight man togs--who's "the boss of Cochise County" and a law unto herself. The forty guns are an army of pistoleros who accompany her just about everywhere, and Fuller misses no opportunity to exaggerate their macho assertiveness in black-and-white CinemaScope, whether thundering along the horizon or formed up on either side of a preposterously long dinner table with Stanwyck at its head. Barry Sullivan costars as a Wyatt Earp-like gunfighter who both threatens Stanwyck's empire and awakens her lust for something besides power. As one of his brothers, Gene Barry (soon to star in Fuller's mind-blowing Vietnam movie China Gate) enjoys a passionate liaison with a gunsmith's busty blond daughter (Eve Brent) whom he romances down the bore of a rifle--an image Jean-Luc Godard would memorialize in Breathless. In the relentlessly double-entendre dialogue and the blocking of scenes, everything takes on sexual overtones: power and impotence, political advantage and exclusion. Fuller and cameraman Joseph Biroc capture many sequences in single, minutes-long takes that often end in a death--and in one perverse instance, the revelation of a death that has occurred midway through without our knowing it. (It's a T.S. Eliot moment, though we won't insist on it.) Style is all in this movie, which will leave you either astonished or aghast. More likely, both. --Richard T. Jameson

Broken Lance: Broken Lance is a noble entry in the trend of adult Westerns of the early 1950s, scoring on a couple of fronts: (1) as a multigenerational saga, with Shakespearian overtones, of a family bickering over a giant ranch, and (2) as a grown-up look at the dilemma of the Native American... its title perhaps inspired by the Indian-friendly Broken Arrow? Spencer Tracy stars as the blustery patriarch of a cattle spread, threatened by pollution from a nearby copper mine as well as the shiftiness of his older sons (Richard Widmark, Hugh O'Brian, and Earl Holliman). Tracy's bluff characterization--as ever, he seems to be yanking at the script like a cat unraveling a ball of yarn--carries the film effortlessly along. The central character is actually his youngest and wisest son, played by Robert Wagner, who's not especially convincing as the mixed-race issue of Tracy's second marriage, to an Indian woman (Oscar nominee Katy Jurado). Edward Dmytryk directs in a style that could be called "intelligent," which is another way of saying "not very exciting." The early CinemaScope probably accounts for some of the static set-ups, although there are exteriors that are breathtaking (watching this film in its full-screen version would be crazy). The cast is certainly tops; Widmark is overqualified to play a third lead, but who's complaining? Most memorable is the loving relationship between Tracy's cattleman and his Indian wife, although the subject of Native Americans is secondary here (check out The Devil's Doorway and Apache for more overt Fifties looks at the topic). Veteran screenwriter Philip Yordan won an Oscar for his "original story," a curious and long-defunct Academy Award category. --Robert Horton

The Culpepper Cattle Co.: The Culpepper Cattle Company is a worthy example of a certain kind of early-1970s Western: deglamorized, unromantic, and frankly violent. This one begins in familiar terms, as a greenhorn lad (Gary Grimes, recently deflowered in Summer of '42) joins a cattle drive, surrendering himself to the extremely focused leadership of boss Frank Culpepper (the authentically Western Billy "Green" Bush). The episodes that follow are engrossing and colorful, and the drive gets more interesting when a quartet of lethal hombres (among them Bo Hopkins, Luke Askew, and wild-eyed Geoffrey Lewis) join the ride. The business of frontier justice--which here usually means shooting strangers just to be on the safe side--is worked out in refreshingly unheroic ways. Clearly director Dick Richards (making his debut in a relatively brief directing career) is responding to the revisionist era, and specifically to the films of the great Sam Peckinpah; this movie's climax is a scaled-down nod to The Wild Bunch. Probably too scaled-down, given the somewhat abrupt ending. The music uses themes from Jerry Goldsmith's terrific score for The Flim-Flam Man, released five years earlier. Culpepper got lost in the flurry of revisionist westerns that sounded similar themes: The Cowboys, The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid, and by far the best of this group, Robert Benton's Bad Company. All were released in 1972, a high-water mark for re-thinking the genre. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the other reviewers said!.......2004-11-18

I don't know why the other reviews rated this disc so highly. The package may say it is digitally MASTERED but it is NOT digitally REmastered! There was no restoration work done on this disc whatsoever, and it shows. The quality is barely passable, and probably was dubbed off older vhs tapes. I think the other reviewers were just so ecstatic that these episodes were even available on DVD that their judgement got the best of them. In summary, if you can find this disc for a couple of bucks go for it, otherwise, you'd be better off getting the Rifleman and Wagon Train on other DVD editions.

5 out of 5 stars Wagons Ho !.......2001-11-07

During the 1950's these three shows became a family must see. For a whole generation of us born in the 40's and 50's this is a nostalgic trip back to a more innocent time. The quality of these recordings is excellent, keeping them in black and white is true to their time. Anyone wishing to revisit Rowdy Yates, Chuck Conner or Ward Bond will find these invaluable. It is amazing too see how simple the plots and the parts were, relying instead on our connection to the actors character. You won't want to miss it.

5 out of 5 stars FOUR WESTERN CLASSICS INTO ONE.......2001-06-21

I must tell you I thought I was getting only one episode on "The Wagon Train" and another one on the "Death Valley Days". To my delightful surprise, that is a double sided DVD and brings you not only two of the best tv classic westerns ever made, but four tv classic westerns: "Death Valley Days" ("Dear Teacher" & "Sego Lillies"); "Wagon Train" ("The Dr. Denker Story"); "Bat Masterson" ("The Fighter" & "Stampede at Tent City") and "The Rifleman" ("Outlaw's Inheritance" & "Mail Order Groom"). Without a doubt, that is one of the best DVDs in my modest, but selected collection. It comes in a very nice case with short, but great information on the shows. It has an interactive menu, scene selector, dolby digital, trivia quiz and biography of the famous stars of the classic western shows in it. It was digitally mastered and was made in Canada. The 7 (seven) episodes on the DVD were nicely and competently chosen among the various good episodes on the shows. If you are a tv western classic fanatic like me or even if you want to have a really good DVD just added to your collection, that is a must!
