The opening and closing moments of Robert (Forrest Gump) Zemeckis's Contact astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. Contact traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, Contact is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from 2001 to The Right Stuff. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest) reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--Contact is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation, but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, Contact deserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio filmmaking on a personal scale. --Jim Emerson

The type of movie I love. It is scifi, rich in mystery! The beginning is very slow. When I watch it now I skip right to the beginning of the action. From there the movie flys. You are truly kept looking for the next clue, the next answer. You want to find out what this is all about. They could have done something different with the conclusion, but I liked the change in the main characters outlook.

This movie is rich in ethical points of view. It ranges from the insane who believe their harmful actions are saving humanity, to non-ethical behaviour by saying what ever it takes to succeed. the moral of the movie is amazingly simple yet illusive to even the wisest of Philosophers.
The special effects are fantastic, the casting is brilliant and the writing is incredibly profound. A definite 5 star movie.

Contact is a movie about Astronomy and the search for signals in space from remote, intelligent life. Jodie Foster plays a gifted astronomer who struggles to keep her work and reputation alive in a very controversial field that very few people--including most other scientists--do not take seriously. Even a non-scientific audience cannot help becoming totally engulged in this story. The acting and direction are outstanding, and the special effects are stunning. The viewer is swept into a whirlwind of excitement and suspense as a world that does not yet exist for us becomes not only alive, but compellingly believable.

Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

take a barbie doll, some weird gooey mess, a bit of electronic tinkering, two teenagers with bras on their heads and what do you get?

You get Kelly LeBrock!

That is the equation we are asked to accept in this cute and campy movie from the 1980's.

This movie was made during the "Breakfast Club" and "St Elmo's Fire" craze, When all of your "Sixteen Candles" were "Pretty In Pink".

It's basically Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink for Science geeks. A coming of age story about two nerds who can't seem to get a date so they decide to MAKE a date.

Problem one with this movie? Two nerdy guys and one girl? They have enough problems getting women as it is. You'd think they'd at least want their own woman.

But in the end, they get what they wanted all along anyway... real (if teeny bopper) love.

And Kelly LeBrock goes back to wherever it is artificially-created model-type one-hit wonder movie babes go when they're no longer needed.... I think they call it Celebrity Fit Club.

I rate this movie 4 stars for special effects...but honestly I gotta give it 3 for plot.

I was a science nerd growing up and it was too weird for me even then.

Weird Science has a funny high-concept premise and an endearing cast, but even when I was a teen and the movie was brand new, I thought the humor was messy and heavy-handed. I never understood how so many of my contemporaries consider this a "classic", especially when stacked up against Revenge of the Nerds, Real Genius, Better Off Dead, or even Hughes' masterful 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller. Still, the movie is not without a certain odd charm and there are some great moments (mainly involving Bill Paxton); I find myself wishing Amazon would let me give it an extra half star!

TOTALLY worth owning. Kids loved this throwback just as much as they liked Shrek. My boy couldn't stop laughing when the last part came on when Chet was turned into a giant fly-eating turd.

Whoopi Goldberg is one of those people who could make me laugh just reading the phone book. I always enjoy watching her no matter what she's up to.

So, I definitely got a kick out of Jumpin' Jack Flash, even though the storyline is pretty unbelievable and the romantic element kind of tacked on perfunctorily. There are a bunch of fun bits that keep the movie entertaining, but the story line is really just something to hang Whoopi's immense talent upon. Fun but flawed.

This Jack Black vehicle seems, on the surface, like a perfect fit for the actor: an opportunity to showcase Black's unique style with the extreme facial gestures and exuberant physicality that have become his forte. Black plays Ignacio, a lowly cook in a monastery in central Mexico who feeds orphans by day, and wrestles in the town square at night. Ignacio teams up with Esqueleto (Hector Jimenez), a street urchin who tormented him, to form a tag-team duo that goes up against the strangest wrestlers Mexico has to offer. Besides doing it for money to feed the orphans, Ignacio is also fighting to win the forbidden affections of Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera) with predictable difficulty. While the movie has likeable characters and the plot is enjoyable enough, it can't overcome its plodding pace and formulaic structure enough to keep the movie interesting throughout. Jack Black is a very strong comedic actor, and the wrestling scenes offer plenty of chances for slapstick, physical comedy, but watching him run around in red briefs and blue tights amounts to half the laughs in the movie, and there's just not enough here for him to really work with. When he plays a more well-formed character, as in School of Rock and High Fidelity, his strengths really show. But in Nacho Libre he's saddled with a caricature. Weighed down by too much low-brow humor and a script that goes nowhere, Nacho Libre just can't make full enough use of Black's talents to overcome the obstacles. --Daniel Vancini

`Nacho Libre' was referred to us by some friends and so, despite not caring to much for seeing it, my wife and I decided to give it a try. Immediately I saw comparisons to `Napoleon Dynamite' and realized that this may just be funny. Gladly I can say that the money was well spent. `Nacho Libre' succeeds in making me laugh, and I'm sure it will bring quite a few laughs to each and every viewer. It's far from perfect and will not be remembered as comic genius, but then again it's a small Nickelodeon film with dry humor and fart jokes so it's not to be expected to reign supreme. It delivers what it sets out to deliver, easy laughs. Jack Black is not the funniest guy around, but he knows how to poke fun at himself in order to rouse a laugh, and here he has plenty of playing field with his pudgy physic and boyishly immature charm.

The film focuses on Ignacio, a cook in a monastery who dreams of being a pro wrestler. He desires to help the orphans whom he feeds and all in all is a decent kind hearted man. When the beautiful nun Sister Encaracion moves into the monastery he begins to try and woo her but he runs into opposition and inside competition. After being attacked by a street urchin by the name of Esqueleto he decides to team up with this man in order to tag-team wrestle for money. This way he can purchase fresh and tasty food for the orphans and hopefully win the heart of Sister Encaracion.

The acting is decent, what's to be expected from a film of this caliber. It's not supposed to be brilliant acting so do be disappointed when you realize it's not. Jack Black is his usual funny self, if you find him usually funny, but to me it was Hector Jimenez who proved to be best in show. His Esqueleto has the best one liners and he has the physic of a thirteen year old corpse so the physical comedy is golden. Ana de la Reguera is pretty much a prop here, she's pretty and that's all they really need her to be, someone we believe Black's character would fall for, but also someone we believe could fall for Black. She works just fine.

The real heart of the laughs here comes from the outrageous wrestling matches. The fighters get crazier and crazier and the moves are as outlandish as they are painful to watch. Black and Jimenez really shine here with their physical comedy and they provide some of the only `laugh out loud' scenes in the film. That's not to say that the film is a waste if not for a few fight scenes, but these scenes are the only scenes, at least for me, that excite a vocal reaction. There are other funny scenes but they are laughs I can keep to myself. The script could have been a little tighter maybe, but when you sit back and see the style of comedy they were going for it actually works well. If you're a fan of the humor used in `Napoleon Dynamite' then you'll enjoy `Nacho Libre' and if you're a fan of Jack Black then I'm sure you've already added this family comedy to your DVD library.

Like Napoleon Dynamite we have fallible charecters with heart, a loser to succsess storyline, powerfull ironic tension, and a deadpan mexican sidekick. Unfortunatly all these things plus a ridiculous setting is less then the sum of it's parts. Napolean worked becuse you could identify with him. Either you where a Napolean or you knew one.

I had never even heard of wrestling friars. I imagine this movie is hilarious to people who can relate to it but for me- no such luck.

That's not to say I didn't like this movie, or that I don't like absurdism. As a random movie it is really funny. I laughed out loud in several places, despite my then girlfriend glaring at me. It's just that it tries to be two condradictory movies at the same time. It left me in the weird position of not knowing how to feel about any given scene.

People react differently to say Monty Pythons Flying Circus and Forrest Gump. They are different kinds of comedy. Can you imagine a 16 ton weight being dropped on Forrest? That is what this movie is like.

I'm of Mexican-American decent and I graduated from a Catholic College. This movie made me laugh my butt off! I loved it, my parents loved it, and my kids loved it. My husband is white and likes Jack Black. He could care less.

This movie is hilarious, from beginning to end. It's so much fun to watch I had to get it for my Husband for Father's Day. He loved it. Makes us laugh just thinking about it. This is a must own.
