"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That's more than the code of a newspaperman in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; it's practically the operating credo of director John Ford, the most honored of American filmmakers. In this late film from a long career, Ford looks at the civilizing of an Old West town, Shinbone, through the sad memories of settlers looking back. In the town's wide-open youth, two-fisted Westerner John Wayne and tenderfoot newcomer James Stewart clash over a woman (Vera Miles) but ultimately unite against the notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Ford's nostalgia for the past is tempered by his stark approach, unusual for the visual poet of Stagecoach and The Searchers. The two heavyweights, Wayne and Stewart, are good together, with Wayne the embodiment of rugged individualism and Stewart the idealistic prophet of the civilization that will eventually tame the Wild West. This may be the saddest Western ever made, closer to an elegy than an action movie, and as cleanly beautiful as its central symbol, the cactus rose. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars John Ford and John Wayne's eighth and penultimate Western together, an elegy for the passing of the Old West!.......2007-07-07

The critics panned THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE when it was first released in April 1962, Not least because it went over much of the same ground explored in FORT APACHE (1948). But the general public thought otherwise and the test of time has proved the latter right. Shot in black and white, with two obviously over-aged stars and mostly studio-bound the only concession to its day was the wide-screen aspect! Gene Pitney also had a huge hit with a song of the same name released at the same time but omitted from the soundtrack because John Ford was said to have hated it!

This dark-tale is of the Old West versus the advancing 20th Century. A train draws into the small western town of Shinbone the only passengers to get off, are Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) and his wife Hallie (Vera Miles) they are accosted by local reporter for `The Star' young Charlie Hasbrouck (Joseph Hoover) followed by his editor Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young). Stoddard reveals that they are in town for the funeral of an old friend Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). In the funeral parlour they find Doniphon's coffin guarded by his faithful black servant Pompey (Woody Strode). Scott persuades the Senator to give his account. Meanwhile ex-town-marshal Link Appleyard (Andy Devine) takes Hallie on a buckboard ride out to Toms burnt out old house, here they find masses of cactus roses in bloom, Link steps down and picks one for her.

Now back in Shinbone the story is then revealed in flashback - A gang led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) ambushed Stoddard's stagecoach. He tries to defend a fellow female passenger but suffers a savage beating in the process and is left for dead. Tom Doniphon brings him to his girl friend Hallie Ericson at PETER'S PLACE (a venue for home cooking) at Shinbone after finding him on the trail! On discovering who attacked him Doniphon told Stoddard "Liberty Valance's the toughest man south of the Picketwire [River] - next to me". Stoddard is a lawyer by profession and is determined to bring Valance to justice he elicits the reluctant help of Marshal Link Appleyard and Shinbone Star founder and editor Dutton Peabody (Edmund O'Brien) in the meantime he helps out washing dishes and serving tables at PETER'S PLACE, he also runs a class teaching people to read and write, whilst telling them that `the pen is mightier than the sword'. One night Valance and two of his henchmen Floyd (Strother Martin) and Reese (Lee Van Cleef) burst into PETER'S PLACE hijack a table and generally causing trouble, Floyd gleefully points out to Valance, that he has spotted Stoddard waiting on tables. Valance trips Stoddard causing him to drop Doniphon's steak dinner on the floor. Doniphon and Valance square up for a gunfight after Doniphon ordered Valance to pick up the steak, but Stoddard picks up the steak to ease the situation, all concerned know sooner or later Valance will be back.

As the tension continues to mount Stoddard is helping out Editor Peabody who allows Ranse to hang his Attorney at Law sign outside the Star Newspaper Office, he is also going off and practicing with a six gun twice a couple of times a week. Tom Doniphon tells Hallie that he going north of the Picketwire [River] for some time horse-trading on his return he reports trouble brewing with the big ranchers who have recruited Liberty Valance and his henchmen to mess up the coming Territorial Convention for Statehood, Stoddard and Peabody are finally selected as the two delegates required whilst Valance was completely rejected. In an editorial Peabody blackens Valances name. Later Valance, Floyd and Reese beat Mr Peabody to within an inch of his life, Ranse sends the marshal to find Valance for a final showdown. Although Liberty wounds Ranse with his first shot - Ranse somehow manages to get off a shot, Valance falls to the ground and is pronounced "dead" in the street by Doc Willoughby. Stoddard is plagued by guilt and is only relieved when Doniphon fills in the missing details. Following the shooting of Valance, the wounded Stoddard is elevated to super hero known to all as "The man who shot Liberty Valance" he also wins Hallie's hand in marriage and goes back East to pursue a life in politics. Whilst having lost Hallie, a disappointed Tom Doniphon steps aside and retreats to into reclusive obscurity.

Stoddard having completed his story to the press was surprised when the editor tears up the script Ranse asked Scott "You're not going to us the story Mr Scott". "This is the West, Sir". Scott said. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Finally Hallie left a cactus rose on Toms coffin as a symbol of their lost love. So with Donophin buried and their business concluded in Shinbone the Stoddards catch the train back to Washington they are welcomed onboard once again by the conductor Jason Tully (Willis Bouchey) Ranse thanks Jason for all his help and Jason replies "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance".

A fine cast with some great performances all round although the likes of Lee Marvin, Edmound O'Brien, Ken Murray and John Carradine "Ham it up a little". Whilst the two leads were in reality too old for their parts with the love interest Vera Miles being some twenty-odd years their junior, she however gives a beautiful restrained performance as the woman torn between two men! Ford too was on top form with the domestic scenes in Peter's Place cooking and serving up the dinner plate sized steaks to a full house followed up by the enevitable washing up - BRILLIANT!

It was near the end now for the most successful Director / Star relationship in making Western Movies. Ahead lay. "The Civil War" chapter of HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962) and finally a non-Western DONOVAN'S REEF (1963). But Big John Wayne was far from finished, increditably over the next dozen or so years, another twenty-one films lay ahead, fourteen of them Westerns including his Oscar winning TRUE GRIT!

This Widescreen Collection DVD includes Sub Titles, Theatrical Trailer and Scene Selection. This film really deserves the full treatment of a Special Two Disc Edition with extras including Gene Pitney's title song. Nevertheless a must for all Western fans, others should enjoy it too!

4 out of 5 stars the man who shot liberty valance.......2007-06-27

The first time I saw "The Man who shot Liberty Valance" was on TCM.I was amazed at the casting of this fine old western and decided to buy it for my library of old movies. I was not disappointed. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, along with Lee Marvin made this far better western than most movies were in it's day! It is fun to see all of these actors in their prime, doing what they do best! Thumbs up!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Western Ever!!.......2007-04-23

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart come together to lead one of the most dynamic casts of characters ever put into a western movie.

Who really shot Liberty Valance?

In a story that speaks to true inner strength and humility, the question is answered after the strangest turn of circumstances sees Jimmy Stewart (Ransom Stoddard) rise from humble (almost cowardly) beginnings to become a very well-respected man of the community. It's only later in life that he learns he's made his name on the actions of John Wayne's character...

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but one thing you learn in this movie is that things are not what they first seem. And that makes the movie WAY ahead of its time!

I am stoked to see it available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".......2007-03-16

The combination of John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin along with Vera Miles and a plethora of talented supporting actors from the John Ford stable make this one of the best westerns. Character development is what makes this film so wonderful. The premise is simple: a man builds his entire life on a legend. Told in flashback, Mr. Stewart's character, Ransom Stoddard, sets the story straight regarding the pivotal moment of his life that paved the way for future achievements. Yet, he fails to recognize that his greatest achievement was not in literally doing the things, but in the courage demonstrated in a time of crisis. "Murder, pure and simple; but I can live with it. Hallie wanted you alive. You taught her to read; now go back in there and give her something to read about." And so he does.

John Wayne plays the "noble cowboy" and shy suitor with his usual easy-going charm. Lee Marvin plays the villain, Liberty Valance, with particular passion, serving a worthy stereotype of the sadistic gunslinger. Vera Miles does a nice turn as the romantic interest for Wayne and Stewart's characters. Supporting cast members Woody Strode, Andy Devine, Edmund O'Brien, Strother Martin are all at of the "Old West Central Casting Department." Together, they make the movie entertaining and special on a variety of levels: action-western, romance, lost love, to name but a few.

The DVD quality is quite good. Although some have bemoaned the lack of DVD "extras," for the price, the DVD offers good value. These kinds of movies are rare today and should be appreciated for the pure joy of filmmaking craftsmanship.

5 out of 5 stars John Wayne at his best!.......2007-03-09

This is a CLASSIC John Wayne movie! I strongly encourage any Duke fans to own this movie. He has often been criticized for his lack of acting ability, but this performance holds up very well next to James Stewart. This is truly a multi-faceted character. Red River and The Searchers are often acknowledged as his best. This one needs to be included in that discussion.

Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowpokes converge on a little Western burg called Silverado; they're played by Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Worth many looks.......2007-05-14

Having grow up in the 40's & 50's, I love a good western. (even some bad ones)
But "Silverado" is right up there with the good ones.
Great cast, interesting storyline and the necessary good triumphs over evil ending.
Brian Dennehy is the perfect villain, while Kevin Kline the unexpected hero.
The rest of the cast including Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum keep this film moving. Never a dull moment!
Love watching it as I do many other horse operas.

This is a terrific movie and is highly recommended. But Amazon advertises this product as "new" and it IS NOT. The DVD with the movie was scratched, and damaged, causing skips and gaps. Amazon does not allow ordinary feedback and has REFUSED to exchange or refund.

DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE FROM AMAZON.

I got this DVD as a gift for my Dad. He had it on VHS, but wanted to update his collection. He really loved it.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Exciting Western, With A Great Cast.......2007-01-31

This was a great Western. Very creative and adventerous, and a wonderful cast. Where else would you see a Monty Python alum as a sheriff in a Western?

This movie featured three of my favorite actors: Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and Jeff Goldblum. It also featured one of my favorite actresses, Rosanna Arquette, though she had such a small role even the worst actress couldn't mess that role up. Kevin Costner had a youthful exhuberance that I hadn't seen since from him. And I'm just mentioning my favorites.

I'll stop before I spoil any surprises. If you want a classic western, this is one.

5 out of 5 stars A modern interpretation of the classic western.......2006-12-16

An unbelievable cast, a great story, amazing cinematography, a soundtrack worthy of Aaron Copeland, action, drama, comedy: this movie has it all. I would put this movie up against anything short of a small handful of classic westerns such as the Magnificent Seven.

4 out of 5 stars Paradigm Shattering!!!.......2006-03-31

It's easy to overlook the societal importance of "Shakiest". Most academics consider it a vapid re-make of a "superior" Bob Hope film. However my consensus is that Hope's movie simply Overemphasized the comedic aspects of the story and downplayed the sociological importance and mythical underpinnings of it. I don't fault Hope since his comedic talents are such that only his fully grasping of the genre and paradigm in its epistomological sense would allow him the proper frame/reference to "dim" his comedic talents enough to let the nuances of the story's deeper meanings emerge. Not so with Don Knotts. His performance is neo-subtle in the sense that he draws attention to the pre-Scorsesian templates of story entwined with yet seperated from, meaning, by overexagerating Hope's performance to a Vonnegutian level. Example; his performance as Painless Jesse in the film's opening sequences underscore the relationship of Man the Creator with Man the Destroyer and Man the Dentist. In Barb Rhoades we see an equal but lesser voice representing tenets of Post-modern imperialism as well as Proto-Schwarzeneggerian grandiosity. Yet, it is Knotts, initially passive who redeems himself in the end, triumphing over Rhoades and all she symbolizes as well as echoing the pan-universal theme of the hero transformed by "plumbing" his own depths. This is shown particularily in the mine scene, where we read "mine" as "Subconscious Id". Simply put, not sense "The Incredible Mr. Limpett" has Knotts blended Transformational Mythology with Wellesian Cinematography and Jerrylewisian slapstick. BRAVO!
EDIT; This review is just for fun, guys. No need to take it seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Don Knotts turns up a Bad Penny in the Old West.......2004-12-01

The Shakiest Gun in the West is yet another classic Don Knotts comedy from the late 1960s. This time around, Knotts plays a newly certified dentist who decides to spread oral hygiene throughout the wild, wild West; after all, Philadelphia is already covered up with dentists - there are at least seven already plying their trade there. Jesse Heywood is a little wiry guy, of course, and his courage is just as shaky as his gun-wielding hands, but he manages to make a great big splash out on the frontier. Right after being bamboozled by a merchant and his Chinese assistant (played by Pat Morita, although I didn't realize it was him until I saw the credits), a fiery little redheaded filly comes to him with a toothache, and before he knows what is happening he's a married man. He doesn't know that Penelope "Bad Penny" Cushings (played by the vivacious Barbara Rhoades) is only marrying him because it's her only way to hitch a ride on the wagon train leaving town, nor does he know that his new beloved is a wanted cattle rustler and thief who agreed to help the government find out who is smuggling guns to the Indians in exchange for a pardon. Events play out in such a way that Jesse becomes BMOF (that's Big Man on the Frontier), famous for his shooting and Indian-killing skills. That whole wedding night thing doesn't really work out the way he planned, though.

Naturally, our supposed hero has to rise to the challenge and prove himself in the end, and then we learn how the West was really won - dentistry, of course. I should note the fact that Don Knotts is forced to don women's clothing at one point, and you know that is bound to be funny. There's also a great scene featuring Heywood drunkenly lamenting his long list of failures in life. Knotts is joined by some other familiar faces: along with Pat Morita, look for William Christopher (M*A*S*H's Father Mulcahy) in a small role, while Uncle Festus himself (Jackie Coogan) stars as one of the gun-smuggling desperadoes.

The Shakiest Gun in the West isn't my favorite Don Knotts movie, but there is a lot of Barney Fife in this shaky gunfighter, and the film is consistently funny from start to finish. It is also, needless to say, true family entertainment which can be safely enjoyed by the young as well as the old. Don Knotts is truly a national treasure.

3 out of 5 stars Better than taking a sleeping pill........2004-08-26

If you liked Don Knotts in The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964), The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966), The Reluctant Astronaut (1967), you might like him in this silly western-comedy. A Philadelphia man graduates from denistry and tries to head out to California. He ends up in the wild west, in Big Spring.
The idea in this town is how are the Indians getting the guns. barbara Rhodes (NBC past serial, Generations) is just a scamp who tries to make the goodies on Don Knotts. He's on his way west and she intends to go along with him to get there as well. Even if it means forcing the man to marry her.
Not the best of Don Knotts films, but might be better than taking a sleeping pill.
Also in the cast: Ruth McDevitt, Pat Morita and William Christopher.

5 out of 5 stars Great re-make of Bob Hope film Paleface!.......2003-08-13

Re-makes are not always good, this one is great! First Bob Hope did this in Paleface, now Don Knotts takes over the roll with his own slant on the character.

Unless you own the Laserdisc or saw it at the theaters, this will be your first experience of the full impact of this WIDESCREEN movie. Pans and cuts seen on television, or the previous VHS tape, will be replaced with single shots that include everything from side to side.

THE GHOST AND MR.CHICKEN was Don's only other WIDESCREEN movie for Universal.

5 out of 5 stars Great slap stick humor.......2003-06-01

I think this is a great Don Knotts film. He acts so utterly stupid and pathetic in this film but it's done in a way that's so utterly hillarious. I had lots of laughs all through the movie. Barbara Rhoades is the straight one in the pair and she does a great job as well. The looks on her face during the times she has to deal with Knotts are funny in themselves.

If you like silly slap stick humor I think you'll enjoy this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Copy.......2007-04-24

This is a terrific movie and is highly recommended. But Amazon advertises this product as "new" and it IS NOT. The DVD with the movie was scratched, and damaged, causing skips and gaps. Amazon does not allow ordinary feedback and has REFUSED to exchange or refund.

DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE FROM AMAZON.

5 out of 5 stars Silverado.......2007-03-28

Amazon.com Review

Along Came Jones is one of the most oddball artifacts from Hollywood's golden age. Gary Cooper (who doubled as producer) plays Melody Jones, a "common ordinary useless bronc-stomper" who moseys into the town of Payneville--or is it Painful?--just after legendary bad ass Monte Jarrad has held up the stagecoach. The townsfolk eyeball the "MJ" on Melody's stirrup, leap to hysterically wrong conclusions, and start giving him a wide berth--in some cases, the better to lie in ambush for "Jarrad" while planning how to spend the bounty money. Now, as it happens--and as his crusty sidekick George (the insuperably irreverent William Demarest) keeps reminding him--Melody can barely get his gun out of the holster without blowing his own kneecap off. All that stands between him and extinction is the quick-thinking intervention of a local maiden, one Cherry de Longpre (Loretta Young). Melody, of course, promptly becomes hogtied with love, not suspecting Cherry's the childhood sweetheart of the real Monte Jarrad (Dan Duryea)....

Stylistically the film is a wild mix, with director Stuart Heisler paying close attention to down-the-gun-barrel point of view in several scenes, yet also sitting still for floaty back-projection photography so egregious that it may bring on motion sickness. Still, Nunnally Johnson's script is droll; Cooper clearly relished the chance to poke fun at his strong-silent stereotype; and he and Preston Sturges stalwart Demarest establish a sardonic comic rapport. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Screen legends Gary Cooper (High Noon) and Loretta Young (Lady From Cheyenne) saddle up for an action-packed comedy-western that's "loaded with laughs" (Variety). With inspired performances and lively direction, Along Came Jones hits the bull's-eye for classic western entertainment. Melody Jones (Cooper) is a mild-mannered cowpoke who barely knows the difference between a six-shooter and a carbine rifle, but when he rides into Paynesville, he immediately commands the respect - and fear - of the entire town. The locals believe he's the notorious Monte Jarrad (Dan Duryea), a ruthless outlaw who's been terrorizing the frontier with his daring robberies and lightning-fast draw. At first, Jones enjoys his newfound fame, but that quickly ends when he finds himself the target of a bloodthirsty posse, a determined private investigator, Jarrad's double-crossed partners and the most dangerous enemy of all: Jarrad himself!

4 out of 5 stars Along Came Jones reviewed by taurus5131953.......2007-05-13

This is a comedy/western produced by Gary Cooper. It's a case of mistaken identity in which Jones (Gary Cooper) is mistaken for a notorious outlaw &, coincidentally, they have the same initials. Jones revels in the notoriety for a short time which leads to some comical situations. The problem: Jones is inept at gun-play. The movie is a good one but not a classic. Dan Duryea is excellent in a supporting role as the outlaw Jones is mistaken for. It is a fun movie & most will enjoy it because "Coop" is a joy to watch.

5 out of 5 stars "There's Nothin' I Like Better Than Bein' Saved From Gettin' Shot".......2005-09-28

Why this always amusing and often very funny western spoof is not more widely touted has always been somewhat of a mystery to me. Gary Cooper produced this little gem himself through International Pictures and has a great time poking fun at his own screen image. Nunnally Johnson wrote the screenplay from a novel by Alan LeMay and Stuart Heisler directed with a humorous eye, evident in some of the background filler, moving more than a small sailboat fighting choppy seas.

A perfect cast that includes the beautiful Loretta Young, Preston Sturges favorite William Demarest, and Dan Duryea all play along in a very enjoyable film full of small chuckles. A case of mistaken identity and a terrific comedic performance from Gary Cooper make for great entertainment out west.

Cooper is Melody Jones, an easygoing cowboy who's been thrown on his hind quarters a little too often by broncs. Melody travels with his pal George (William Demarest) and the two end up on the wrong trail due to Melody's bad sense of direction, which is only one of his deficiencies as a cowboy. One of the others is his inability to handle a gun well. Melody is more apt to throw his gun across the room trying to fast-draw than get a shot off. This small but important fact is constantly brought to his attention by his pal George when they enter the small trail town of Payneville.

Unbeknownst to Melody, a notorious and much feared outlaw named Monte Jarrad (Dan Duryea) has just robbed the local stage where a man has been killed. When Melody and George ride into town, the M.J. initials on his saddle leads people to believe he's Monte, and Melody starts enjoying both the "high regard" afforded him and the fear his presence instills in people.

Cooper is hilarious, with his one eye open, one eye closed "dangerous expression" meant to show how tough he is. His droll pal George sees the downside though, knowing Melody couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a big rock, much less his gun! Since there are also a few folks around Payneville who'd like to get rid of the outlaw, and a more dangerous few who'd like to relieve Monte of his money, Melody may need a little help.

In steps pretty Cherry de Longpre (Loretta Young). She keeps Melody and his pal George, who is natuarally assumed to be Monte's partner Roscoe, from being killed. She does so to throw suspicion on Melody and continue the charade, so her beau Monte, who is injured, can have time to get away. Melody does have some smarts though, and realizes what she's doing. But he's smitten with the pretty Cherry by this time and he and a reluctant George decide to play along.

The real Monte has turned mean rather than just wild, however, and once Melody plants a kiss on Cherry, her loyalty begins to wane. Cooper is a riot as he takes off his hat, wipes his lips with his sleeve, and plants one on Cherry that rocks her world. It is almost a parody of the exaggerated gestures in some silent films featuring matinee idols.

When George is injured by Monte, Melody decides to have a show-down with him. He's no match for the fast gun and mean spirit of the real Monte Jarred, however, and Cherry comes to his rescue. Melody wonders if she was trying to hit him, and the real show-down might require another one of those kisses!

Cooper is a hoot as the cowpoke out of high Montana who knows hundered of lines to the "round and round" song but can't handle a gun to save his life. Demarest is great as his saddle pal and Duryea plays his typical bad guy role with relish. Loretta Young is every cowboy's dream and prettier than a cool mountain stream to a thirsty man. An unusual and funny western that is great for a lazy weekend.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! GIVE IT A SHOT!!.......2005-09-12

Don't know why there's only 2 parsimoniously humorless grinchy reviews of this movie on Amazon but I just saw it & it is very fine. Cooper & Demarest make an incomparably hilarious team & the script by Nunnally Johnson is a first rate comedy/satire.

Give it a try! You won't be sorry.

3 out of 5 stars Cooper was Hollywood's greatest simpleton........2004-01-28

Too bad they didnt give him any material to work with in this turkey.

Cooper plays a dimwitted cowpoke (not much of a stretch) mistaken for a notorious outlaw. Some light moments, but no humor. Actually, about the only highlight here is a gorgeous Loretta Young as the outlaw's reluctant girlfriend. OK, I'm out of compliments.

An interesting but overlong diversion, only for huge fans of the genre, or Gary Cooper.

3 out of 5 stars Mr. Deeds Goes to the Wild West.......2001-09-09

Overall, this is an entertaining movie though it moves slowly. It's not a great film, but definitely worth seeing and a bit of a curiousity in the sense that the hero (Cooper) can't shoot a gun, bumbles around falling over himself and is ultimately rescued by a woman, Loretta Young. Not standard fare for 1945. In many ways, it's Mr. Deeds placed into a western. Cooper as Melody Jones seems a slow-witted innocent but is much smarter than he appears.

The downside is the DVD. While not a horrible copy, it certainly isn't good. It appears as if no effort has been made to restore the film. In fact, you're left with the impression they grabbed whatever copy was handy. Some scenes are so dark you can't make out any detail beyond silouettes and many scenes are scratched or otherwise blemished. And of course, nothing to speak of in terms of features. It's a good price but it would be nice if MGM treated their films with a bit more respect.

It's worth seeing however and, if you like Gary Cooper as I do, worth having. Also, if you like westerns this is a nice one to have because it is such a strange duck (as a western).

2 out of 5 stars Serial deserves better.......2005-07-08

This is a great serial, with some really exceptional cowboy stunts by Ken maynard, especially in chapter 1. But the Alpha DVD transfer is one of those who-gives-a-damn operations, where the print is missing frames here and there, the film jiggles and the soundtrack goes in and out of acceptability. It would be nice if someone were to do a proper transfer.

3 out of 5 stars Trinity take off........2007-01-10

Well made take off of the Trinity movies. Follows the origionals very well. Actors are unknown to me but at one time so were Tereence Hill & Bud Spencer. Watch it.

4 out of 5 stars A Western Farce.......2005-11-09

The Trinity movies were western comedies which succeeded not because of production values (they didn't have any) but because they were hilarious. Terrence Hill and Bud Spenser made them so. That made a "son's of" movie a dangerous prospect. Could a new cast of characters recapture the hilarity?

They do. Two unknowns play the parts of the sons of Trinity and Bambino and capture their mannerisms well. They clean up a western town, right the wrongs and pick up the laughs. The quality of the film is improved as well. It works.

Many of the situations are frankly absurd. That is part of what makes it funny. Try this one for some cheap laughs.

3 out of 5 stars Sons of Trinity.......2005-09-11

This was a 'fair attempt' at revisiting the Trinity Movies.
The 'background' cast members were folk from both the first two movies. If your Looking for Terrence or Bud you won't find them here. I was Dissapointed that the 'sons' had the same names.
It would have been a better movie without calling them 'Trinity and Bambino'.

I Did like the movie, although at times, it felt strained, like they were trying too much to capture what only Mr Hill and Mr Spencer had in the originals.
I liked to see alot of the same villians and shop keeps etc from the other movies, that was nice to see.

1 out of 5 stars interesting..........2005-07-11

That's rare about cast (never again seen). It's the clone of the italian "Trinità" with Terence Hill and Bud Spencere.
Technical quality is horrible.

5 out of 5 stars "Hopalong Cassidy Series ... B-Westerns 1940's ... William Boyd as Hoppy".......2006-10-31

The most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures "Hopalong Cassidy", under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and a man of his word...the plots were solid with a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension-building music.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitchrack, was chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite ~ "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes even William Boyd.

William Lawrence Boyd, known as Hop-A-Long Cassidy never wears any outfit except his charactertistic black shirt, trousers, boots and Stetson...Hoppy rode, grinned and fought his way into our hearts on the silver screen and then right into our living rooms with a new inventions called...Television! ... Great Cast of Jimmy Ellison (Johnny Nelson) always hot-headed & getting into trouble...but the scene stealer is George "Gabby" Hayes, as the old-timer Uncle Ben, gives the a film shot in the arm with his down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, as the father figure to Hoppy the interaction with Boyd's character is pure Americana!

Must mention that it was sure good to see one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks George "Gabby" Hayes throw in with Hoppy ... The added special features are simply great ~ Coming Attractions:"Hopalong Cassidy:Public Hero #1", plus a poster gallery, still gallery and my favorite is original materials from "Merchandising King of the Cowboys" museum exhibit. Hope "Image Entertainment" will keep releasing this outstanding series featuring Hopalong Cassidy in glorious black & white. I'll be standing in line for the next adventure with the Bar-20 wranglers ... William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), they'll never be another like him.

Hoppy's interaction with California Carlson (Andy Clyde) is always a shot in the arm with his down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, theses scenes are pure Americana! Boyd, with his silver hair, black clothes and white horse (Topper) rode into our lives and we've never been the same since...your children and grandchildren will enjoy this clean wholesome entertainment ... Hoppy always wore two silver white handle six shooters, never drank or smoked, when the good guys always won and the moral to the story was fair-play...outstanding role model...gotta love it!

Another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films ... a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Andy Clyde (California Carlson) for comedy, left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

William Boyd was my hero, this collection of his films are perfect, clear and give me hope for the future. Our youth should have such a hero to look up to today. Must mention the fact that I still miss one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks though, George "Gabby" Hayes, you're durn tootin'!

Paramount and Clarence E. Mulford's fictional western character Hopalong Cassidy comes to life through William Boyd as Hoppy and Andy Clyde as California with films from the '40s...horse operas directed by Lesley Selander and George Archainbaud...some of the best hard riding and smokin' gunplay that ever came across the big screen from the Bar 20 boys ... just the way we like 'em.

Description

Filmed two years before Predator, many have commented that Alien Outlaw could have been that film's inspiration -- An alien ship lands in a remote mountain location and its occupants go on a hunting party. And, yes, their prey is human! This science fiction adventure has been praised for its subtle social commentary and humankind's relationship with guns, friends and nature. Fashioned like an old comic book story, ALIEN OUTLAW is the second film that B-Western film star Lash La Rue did for Writer/Director Phil Smoot. Always starring in cowboy flicks that featured him with a whip, La Rue said, "They just won't let me put that thing down!" But in his last leading role, Lash La Rue breaks the mold in a film that features both guns and horses but allows him to put down his trademark weapon. Perhaps, as a result, this has been called La Rue's finest film performance. Bonus Features: Uncut and Available for the first time in the USA| Contains a New Widescreen (1.66:1 Anamorphic) and a New Full screen version| Commentary track with both the Writer/Director (Phil Smoot) and the Editor (Sherwood Jones)| Meet the Legends: A one of a kind interview as Republic "B" Western Star, Sunset Carson, interviews legendary "King of the Bullwhip" Lash La Rue| Meet the Ingénue: Sunset's behind-the-scenes interview with newcomer Kari Anderson| Behind the News: News Conference before the filming| Behind the scenes: Home video footage on the set of Alien Outlaw| Trailer of The Dark Power with Lash La Rue. Specs: DVD9; Dolby Digital Mono; 90 minutes; Color; 1.66:1&1.33:1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA - NR; Year - 1985; SRP - $5.99.

3 out of 5 stars Another fun regional outing from Phil Smoot & Co........2006-12-06

First off, if you're a fan of 80's B-movies and haven't seen THE DARK POWER (1985), then go out and get it NOW! It's an awesome low-budget drive-in funfest with goofy monsters, face-ripping, likeable characters and even some mild suspense. ALIEN OUTLAW was director Phil Smoot's follow-up to that film, and while rougher around the edges and not as purely entertaining, it's still worth watching.

Yet again, the film takes place in a small, rural North Carolina town. Karrie Anderson plays a sassy, gun-toting rodeo show cowgirl who's trying to make it big, and former Western serial star Lash LaRue (minus his trademark whip) is the local sheriff. The film gets rolling when a spacecraft crashes into a river, unleashing a trio of fishbowl-helmeted aliens (who are dead ringers of Ro-Man from ROBOT MONSTER) on the unsuspecting public. Naturally, it's up to Karrie and Lash to save the day.

Unlike THE DARK POWER, which was punctuated by comic book-style gore and a (slightly) more mature storyline, ALIEN OUTLAW plays out like a kiddie matinee movie made for adults. What I mean by that is, while virtually bloodless and filled with juvenile humor, there are the occasional dark moments, such as a jarring scene when a pretty college student is raped (off-camera) by one of the invaders. Still, for the most part this is a whole lot of fun; the sort of low-budget regional movie-making that we just don't see anymore. If you're a fan of oddball 80's fluff, then this is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Old Cowboys, Youthful Cuties, Alien Frogmen, & a Hoss.......2005-12-30

First, I did enjoy this movie and knew what I bought was going to challenge my personal integrity and value as a human being.
Alien Outlaw is a flick you might enjoy at a Drive In Movie that cost $1 per carload showing a few movies for that $1. As a child I enjoyed Lash La Rue and most of those old cowboy serials on 1950's T.V. programs, maybe you did too. These old cowpokes in this movie perform adequately for their age and it is nice to see them, most are gone now. Alien Outlaw is definitely one of those really strange cultish films and there are people on this planet who find it might be something to give them a great pleasure in it's ability to amaze and stupify. The Aliens are muggish frogmen and the cutie with the guns is very nice to look at as are most of the females, the dialogue is sorted, most of the actors try hard, Lash never uses a whip in this movie, ( I was disappointed) there is a horse and several 80's model cars, and a gas station. It may cause you to laugh. Small review. See the movie.

Return of Sabata, producer Alberto Grimaldi and director Frank Kramer's (real name Gianfranco Parolini) third and final film about the adventures of the enigmatic, steely-eyed gunman of that name, is both the strangest of the three and arguably the one that most embodies the spaghetti Western aesthetic. Lee Van Cleef is back in the title role (Yul Brynner had stepped in for Adios, Sabata, the middle installment). So is essentially the same story formula (Sabata and his sidekicks take on the greedy villain who's extorting tax money from the good citizens of Hobsonville, with double-crosses the most common currency), as well as several of the actors (in different roles here) from the first two films; the white guy who works both with and against our hero, a staple of the series, is played this time by Reiner Schone, who's appealing in a Luke Wilson kind of way. But like Van Cleef's new hairpiece, his return is not all good. The stoic, silent-but-deadly mystery man of before is now a veritable nattering nabob, with a heretofore unseen interest in the fair sex; nothing wrong with that, but the lighter, frothier Sabata certainly takes some getting used to. So does the surprising lack of fancy gunplay relative to the first two, not to mention the terrible dialogue dubbing that plagued the 1969 original. What's more, producer Grimaldi's association with the Italian master Federico Fellini (he produced Fellini Satyricon) is on full display, starting with a surreal opening sequence that finds Sabata working in a carnival sideshow. The music, too, is absolutely nutty, establishing some sort of spaghetti Western benchmark with a mix that includes J.S. Bach-like organ workouts, acid rock, and a laughably insipid title tune of the sort normally heard on a very bad sit-com. If all of this sounds entertaining, well, for the most part it is, but Return of Sabata is a mighty peculiar way to bring the saga to a close. The DVD contains no bonus features. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where is Sabata?.......2004-12-06

All I'd like to know is why Amazon.com does not carry the first Sabata installment? Such a classic spaghetti western undoubtedly deserves the respect of being included herein.

4 out of 5 stars Surreal Opening helps save this Spaghetti Western.......2004-04-22

The surreal opening of this sequel to SABATA is absolutely incredible and is in the best tradition of the outrageousness of the Spaghetti Western genre. Lee Van Cleef once again is Sabata. This film once more demonstrates the humorous acrobatics and ballistic gadgetry of the Spaghetti genre. Unfortunately the story, if there is indeed one, is almost impossible to follow. However, Van Cleef's tongue-in-cheek approach, which he plays expertly off Reiner Schone's scheming loser, saves this one. At this point in time the Spaghetti Western was in its death throes of existence. This film managed to keep the genre going for a few more years.

3 out of 5 stars LEE VAN CLEEF CLASSIC FINALLY ON VIDEO.......2001-11-14

Anytime a Lee Van Cleef Euro-Western makes it to video, it's an occasion. When it makes it in perfect, pristine condition, it's a special occasion. This Amazon.com exclusive was duplicated by MGM/UA, so the picture quality is excellent. Many of Van Cleef's Italian westerns are duplicated from bad 16mm prints, not so here. This is third in the Sabata series. Van Cleef appeared in the original United Artists feature Sabata, which was followed by Addios, Sabata with Yul Brenner (his only Italian western). The plot about Sabata, gunslinger turned sideshow performer after $5,000 owed to him, is so-so. It's a two star film at best, but the quality of the video brings it up to three stars. NOTE TO AMAZON.COM: let's get more of these films available to us through your arrangement with MGM/UA.
