Description

The Lone Ranger was created for radio in 1933 by George W. Trendle. Starring Clayton Moore as the title character and Jay Silverheels as his faithful companion, Tonto, The Lone Ranger went on to become one of the most popular westerns in history. Clayton Moore passed away in 1999, but he has left us the legacy of a lawman that always shot to wound, not kill, and never sought personal reward for his good deeds. Through Moore's portrayal, The Lone Ranger has become a symbol of individualism and justice that transcends its time and genre. (Black & White, PLUS one color episode from the popular television series.)

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-03-04

I bought this on tape, then DVD. I was huge Lone Ranger fan as a child. Yes it is great to watch the Lone Ranger again. I plan to buy an all color episode edition. My daughter watch the tapes with me when she was in high school. What lured her to watch was it had a horse in it. However after watching this and another collection of episodes(also, some Roy Rogers), she said, "How come you had all the good stuff to watch when you were a kid." She was not much impressed with after school or Saturday morning tv.

This is the beginning of the Lone Ranger and his legend. Start here then buy some of the other collections. They are still fun to watch. Just remind special effects are not very much part of old tv stories which had very limited budgets.

4 out of 5 stars The Legend of the Lone Ranger.......2006-03-09

Still not the movie I have been looking for which is in TOTAL COLOR. This tells the same basic story but I wanted the "Theatrical Version" of the Legend of the Lone Ranger (Original)

5 out of 5 stars The origin of a great American hero.......2004-06-12

This three-episode television classic was filmed in 1949 and introduced Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This seminal film details the masked man's origins as a Texas Ranger who was ambushed with five fellow rangers by outlaw Butch Cavendish, the Ranger's recovery with Tonto's help, why he conceals his identity with a mask, how he finds Silver, and their round-up and arrest of the Cavendish gang. Moore and Silverheels were perfect as the two leads in this series and portrayed the characters as no one else could have. They were supported by some of the old-school, venerable character actors of the day such as Glenn Strange, George Lewis, Tris Coffin, George Chesboro, and Walter Sande. The crisp black and white photography stands up well with time and the Lone Ranger "mood music" is a superb, nostalgic accompaniment to the action as the Ranger and Tonto fight for law and order in the early west. Each of the three episodes is wonderfully narrated by way of introduction, and the narration is also used to introduce key plot situations.

5 out of 5 stars Part of American Pop Culture History........2003-04-08

3 episodes of the famous TV show, vintage 1949, edited together into a feature length film, tell the story of the origin of the Lone Ranger. This is the stuff of childhood memories for aging baby-boomers. Clayton Moore's portrayal of the Lone Ranger, and Jay Silverheels as Tonto, is a great memory of Saturday morning TV in the thrilling days of yesteryear. The acting, script, etc. all display B movie quality, at best, but, who cares? The Lone Ranger is a larger than life image that ranks at the top of American pop culture folklore with the greatest of fictional characters. Among staunch Lone Ranger fans, this is a familiar story viewed many times over the years. For the uninitiated, the mask, the silver mine, Silver, and other things are explained. A color episode is also included showing how the TV show changed from 1949 through 1956. The latter episode includes nice color photography, and shows how the heroic image evolved into the red, white, and blue figure on the white horse, complete with gleaming six-guns and silver bullets. As usual, lawbreakers are brought to justice, without excessive or bloody violence, by the end of the half-hour episode. This DVD edition looks great compared to the typical lower-grade VHS editions, all that was previously available. The full screen format is clean and clear, and the audio comes through nicely. As a nostalgic treat, this is wonderful. There is no reason to exclude the kids, if you can get them to put down the electronic games for a couple of hours. 10-year-olds of all ages will enjoy this viewing experience. Ownership is highly recommended. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars The Lone Ranger and Tonto.......2003-01-19

Return to yesteryear with this excellent DVD. An excellent digital recreation of the original series. There are 2 movies. The first is actually the first two series joined together and in B&W. The second is one of the later series and is in COLOR. Note in the B&W version, Lone Ranger has only one standard revolver ! It's crisp, sound transfer is terrific. Get it ! I also learned what "Kemo Sabe" means for the first time ! It's ...... no, find out for yourself by getting this wonderful DVD ! HI YO SILVER, AWAY !

3 out of 5 stars Dubious transfer!!.......2003-11-25

This is the movie that shows the very begginings of The Lone Ranger story. Six Texas Rangers are brutally ambushed by the Cavendish gang and left for dead. Tonto, an Indian scout, saves the life of one who is left barely alive. The rest is history. Now the BAD NEWS! The TV print used here for The Lone Ranger is not all that bad... pretty good actually, compared with the usual Alpha product I've seen. But they manage to stuff it up in another way. The movie has horizontal hum bars travelling up the screen for the entire duration of the movie. Very annoying and distracting on the darker scenes although I suppose they can get away with it on the lighter outdoor shots. So again, don't expect DVD quality and you might not be disappointed.

I was playing the good guy."..."I will continue wearing the white hat and black mask until I ride up into the big ranch in the sky." 3 out of 5 stars Not As Good as the Serial.......2001-07-25

This movie is alright as a feature of a Serial but the cutting is drastic and the plot becomes quite uneven. The serial works best as the Rangers are killed off one by one until the actual Lone Ranger emerges, but in this feature everything is so truncated that the excitement is lost. The Movie rates 3 stars only because of the wonderful work of Lee Powell, Hal Taliaferro and Chief Thunder Cloud. If you can't find the serial this is fine, but if you can get the serial you will see the difference.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite.......2000-11-23

All true Lone Ranger fans will be disappointed. There is no "..Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, etc." The announcer isn't at the end either, so obviously this is not for the serious collector. Even the serial is an edited version. It does not mean this DVD is without merit: it is better than nothing. But if you can wait or already have these on tape, save the money. Oh, for the day when real pristene copies, unedited, will be available. Question: why do people who don't really care about the Lone Ranger, make these things anyway?

5 out of 5 stars Lone Ranger will be missed and he will ride again.......1999-12-29

Sad news travels fast. Many millions of baby boomers and other fans will be shocked to hear that Clayton Moore, THE only LONE RANGER died today, December 28th 1999. He will be remembered forever as the "Masked Man".

      Product Description

The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1952) The Lone Ranger was created for radio in 1933 by George W. Zorro (1976) Posing as a floppish coward, Diego, a Spanish nobleman, fights injustice in colonial California. Upon his return from Spain, Diego realizes that Captain Pasquale is terrorizing the district and levying unreasonable taxes. Disguised as Zorro a masked Robin Hood-like swashbuckler the young Spaniard menaces the local authorities to the delight of all of the peasants. In the meantime, posing as the inept fop, he is able to move through society without being suspected.

2 out of 5 stars Do not judge a dvd by it's cover........2006-12-26

The cover and back of the packing show the 1981 Legend of the Lone Ranger and a Zorro film. The Lone Ranger is the 1952 black and white (not even colour version ) of the first three episodes of the tv series not the movie, and the 1952 Zorro is a 1976 Zorro film with poor sound. The Lone Ranger shows were around 1hr and 8 minutes not even the 1hr 38 minutes advertised on the back. The write up when I purchased this DVD was what was on the back cover not what was in the DVD holder.

      2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-03-15

As much as I am a fan of the Lone Ranger - this is not the film I expected - the cover picture leads you to believe this is the Klinton Spilsbury version from the 80's - its not - its just the first 3 episodes of the Clayton Moore TV show. Which is fine if you are looking for the Clayton Moore Lone Ranger.

As for the Zorro film - that is 90 minutes of my life wasted. I had hoped for one of the older black and white swashbuckling hero versions - this is at best a B-grade story that way overplays mediocre action. The sound is horrible, and the storyline is confusing even if you know the Zorro storyline.

I bought my copy at a dollar store - for a dollar - that is the most this set is worth.

This much-maligned big-screen version of the well-loved radio and TV show stands as one of the rare cases in which the entire performance of one of a film's stars was redubbed by another actor. (For the others, see Andie McDowell in Greystoke and Harvey Keitel in Saturn 3.) In this case, it was youngster Klinton Spilsbury (and whatever happened to him?), cast as the famous Texas Ranger, ambushed by villains and left for dead, only to return with silver bullets, a horse named Silver, a mask, and a Native American sidekick named Tonto (Michael Horse) on a one-man mission for justice. In this film he battles a vicious group of bad guys led by a flinty-eyed Christopher Lloyd. Spilsbury's every line was redubbed by James Keach. Despite a critical drubbing, this is actually a better Western than you would expect, given its long-sullied reputation. --Marshall Fine

      1 out of 5 stars JUST A BAD MOVIE.......2007-03-05

I SAW THIS MOVIE AND AS A BABY BOOMER WHO QUITE WELL REMEMBERS THE SERIES OF THE FIFTIES THIS MOVIE REALLY SUCKED. AND NOT ONLY THE DISCRACEFULL ACTIONS OF THE MOVIE COMPANY AGAINST CLAYTON MOORE FROM WEARING THE MASK AT CHARITY EVENTS DIDN'T HELP THIS MOVIE, THEY NEVER THOUGHT OF USING MR. MOORE AS AN AGED LONE RANGER RETELLING HIS PAST LET'S SAY TO HIS GRANDCHILD OR NEPHEW WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A SMART IDEA INCLUDING HIM IN THE MOVIE.
AND WHO EVER THOUGHT OF PUTTING WILD BILL HICKOK, CUSTER AND BUFFALO BILL AND LINCOLN ALL IN THE SAME MOVIE WAS TRUELY STUPID . IT MADE THE MOVIE SEEM SILLY AND LIKE WATCHING DUMB SPOOF OF A MOVIE. I ONLY HOPE THAT A SERIOUS
REMAKE WITH GOOD ACTING AND SCRIPT WILL BE DONE ONE DAY. THANK GOD WE HAD CLAYTON MOORE AND JAY SILVERHEELS

2 out of 5 stars More bronze than Silver.......2006-11-12

The early Eighties saw a slew of Westerns greenlit by studios, many hoping to ride on the coat-tails of the anticipated success of Heaven's Gate (who knew it would become a by-word for box-office disaster?) - The Long Riders, Cattle Annie and Little Britches, Barbarosa and this attempt by Lew Grade's ITC to start a new screen franchise. On paper it wasn't without promise. Legendary cinematographer William A. Fraker had directed the excellent Lee Marvin-Jack Palance Western Monte Walsh, while co-writers Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts had written a number of James Cagney films (including the classic White Heat) and William Roberts had written the wonderful comic Western The Sheepman as well as contributing to The Magnificent Seven. It even boasted a John Barry score.

The result was a massive and critically reviled box-office disaster in its day, not least because of one of the greatest PR fiascos in film history when the producers outraged America by taking out a court order to stop original Lone Ranger star Clayton Moore from wearing his mask at charity events. The stink was so great that even the same producers' Raise the Titanic grossed more. So, a quarter century on, is this little-seen, never revived Western really that bad?

Not exactly: it's just not very good, slow and pedestrian for much of its running time. It takes nearly an hour of drawn-out backstory for John Reid to don his mask and become the Lone Ranger, and once he does, he doesn't exactly do much. Indeed, there's little action in the film - a stagecoach robbery at the beginning, a good canyon shootout in the middle and a lot of explosions at the end. Unfortunately, it doesn't find that much interesting to fill in the gaps with.

Part of this is down to the leads. Klinton Spilsbury is inoffensive but defiantly unmemorable as The Lone Ranger - I've got furniture with more personality - while Michael Horse's Tonto fares little better. Jason Robards phones in his performance as Ulysses S. Grant, the great Richard Farnsworth has nothing to do as Wild Bill Hickok and Juanin Clay's romantic interest is dropped no sooner than she is established. Only a restrained Christopher Lloyd makes an impression as the evil Butch Cavendish.

Today the film is more interesting for its very obvious influence on the plot of the so very much better The Mask of Zorro - as in Martin Campbell's film, the hero adopts a mask and a disguise to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of a disgraced officer who plans to turn his province into a small country. There's even a scene between the Lone Ranger, disguised as a priest, and his romantic interest in a church confessional, a la Zorro. But what's missing here is the panache: everything is workmanlike and uninvolving. Even John Barry's score, hampered by Merle Haggard's unfortunate title song and some persistent rhyming narration, seems to be just going through the motions.

It's watchable and it's certainly not the war crime contemporary critics made it out to be, but it's still a missed opportunity.

On the plus side, though listed as 4:3 fullscreen, the UK DVD is actually letterboxed in the full original 2.35:1 widescreen ratio. No extras, but the reasonable price and the decent widescreen transfer helps compensate.

1 out of 5 stars BAD BAD BAD FAITH.......2006-09-18

I don't know if this has been addressed in the other reviews, but when this movie came out (I remember it like it was yesterday) the filmmakers took out a court injunction against Clayton Moore to prevent him from wearing the mask in public (appearances, conventions, etc.) as it would interfere with the new film. For this reason I've never seen it and never will. The producers will not get a dime from me ... EVER.

3 out of 5 stars Good Western, Great Horse!.......2005-12-04

Come on, this was a fun action movie, worthy of at least Good "B Flic" status. Just the horse scenes alone are worth making a nice DVD release. Thirdeyenine.

      3 out of 5 stars Time for a re-evaluation.......2005-11-01

Granted, this film could have received better treatment if Clayton Moore had been treated a little better. Now that he has passed, let's look at it from another perspective. It actually was a better than average flick. Spilsbury's acting was a little amateurish. Over-dubbing his voice really showed a lack of confidence in his abilities. It's time to release it on DVD so a new generation can express their opinions.
