Description
In this surreal, satirical comedy, Italian director Marco Ferreri presents his take on the classic American Western, sympathizing with the Indians instead of the cowboys. This time, the Battle of Little Big Horn, the scene of General Custer's humiliating defeat by the Indians, rages at the demolished site of a formerly thriving marketplace in Paris. Starring Marcello Mastroianni as General Custer and Catherine Deneuve as his ravishing frontier gal.
Customer Reviews:
Subtle, pointed humor.......2000-12-13
I bought the DVD on Philrob's recommendation. I agree those who enjoy the Marx Brothers should look at this film, but I think it's more for the fan who looks beyond the surface humor of the Marx Brothers. The humor is subtle, sometimes too subtle for its own good, but it's on the mark. The production values are spartan at best, but overlook the deficiencies; this film has a lot to say. Cozy up to it with a cup of hot coffee and a discerning eye and enjoy.
You should appreciate this movie..........2000-06-19
...a little bit more, if you knew the small facts around it: Marco Ferreri just finished shooting "La Grande Bouffe" (As well, the 4 main actors are the same as in "La Grande Bouffe") when the works for the Paris' subway RER produced a big hole in the middle of the city (Les Halles). When he saw that hole, he thought it was the most perfect stage he could get for shooting his next movie. But since he could not put the subway works on a full stop, he had to make it in a hurry, hence some shortcomings in the final output. When you'll see this one, just keep in mind that most of the scenes in this movie were almost improvised on the spur of the moment. Those who like the Marx Bros should enjoy this one.
A Satirical Take on War, History, and Culture.......1999-04-24
I was entranced by this film. Artfully taking the events of Little Big Horn and translating them into '70's (then contemporary) Paris, "Don't Touch the White Woman" manages to at once entertain, delight, and provoke. The final scene remains one of the most scatching indictments of Imperialism yet to be recorded on film. To cap it all of, Marcello Mastroianni dazzles alongside Catherine Deneuve.

Customer Reviews:
Gary Cooper saves his Wagon "Caravan" from Indian attack.......2001-08-02
Although this was Gary Cooper's next film after "Morocco" and despite its title, "Fighting Caravans" is not another film about the French Foreign Legion, but rather a Western. Cooper plays Clint Belmet, who is arrested for disturbing the peace right before he was to leave Missouri to be the guide for a caravan of wagons heading west. His partners, Bill Jackson (Ernest Torrence) and Jim Bridger (Tully Marshall), talk Felice (Lily Damita), an orphaned French girl who wagon has just joined the caravan, to pretend to be Clint's wife to get him out of jail. Once free, Clint is more than willing to play the bridegroom, but apologizes where it is clear Felice is angry. The two become friends worrying Bill and Jim that Clint is going to want to marry and settle down. Meanwhile, another member of the caravan, Lee Murdock (Fred Kohler), plays to betray them to the Indians who attack in the final real. This 1931 film, based on the 1929 novel by Zane Grey, was directed by Otto Brown and David Burton. Cooper's performance is okay, although the script does not require him to do much along the way except look handsome. "Fighting Caravans" was such a big production that the two directors shot enough footage that the extra was used as background for the 1934 film "Wagon Wheels" starring Randolph Scott. Finally, to make things really interesting, this film, which is an above-average Western from the early days of talking pictures, has been shown on television as "Blazing Arrows."
Low-rent version of "The Big Trail"..........2001-06-11
A semi-clone of "The Big Trail", Cooper takes over the spot DUKE played, as a frontiersman/guide for a wagon train.
While "Fighting Caravans" is not as expansive as "The Big Trail", and while the young Gary Cooper is no young John Wayne, this early western is pretty entertaining.
In the story, Cooper helps the wagon train fend off Indians and evil traders, while his two crusty companions try and save him from falling in love.
There's plenty of action, and there's even a hint of pre-code Hollywood, as Cooper's character practically attempts to blackmail his new sweetheart into fooling around with him.
Laserlight/Delta found a pretty fair print, but there are several missing frames. The image will occasionally "black out", but while annoying, does not interfere with viewing. Originally 92 minutes, this print seems to be more or less intact, missing perhaps two or three minutes.
The story moves along well, and the opening credits alone are pretty snazzy for 1931.
The film has much to recommend it, and while "The Big Trail" is superior, this early Cooper vehicle is worth adding to your western DVD collection. Especially for the low price the disc is being offered at, you should definitely pick this one up.
Film fans should look (or listen!), for Eugene Pallette, of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" fame. He's here in a minor supporting role some seven years before he played Friar Tuck.

James Fenimore Cooper's exciting tale of the English Indian scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends during the French and Indian War is an enduring classic.
It is 1757, English Indian scout Hawkeye and his Mohican friends meet up with a British officer escorting two sisters to their father, a commander of a frontier fort. Along the way, they face trouble when an enemy Indian tribe, the Hurons, capture the group of travelers. Attempts at rescue turn into battle when another tribe joins the Mohicans to save themselves from death at the hands of the renegades.
Customer Reviews:
A great DVD for those who want to reclaim their childhood!!.......2006-02-11
Finally after all these years one of my favorite cartoons from childhood goes digital!! Overall this is a really neat cartoon. I think it is one of the more realistic cartoon portrayals of Last of the Mohicans out there, but of course along with all the other cartoons that have been made there are a lot of differences to make it appropriate for children. I also like the animation that was used in the picture, because it is the typical 1970's Hanna Barabara animation of that era that we love so much.
The show starts off with Major Heyward who is escorting Cora and Alice Munro to their father in Fort William Henry. Along the way they meet Magua who claims to be a scout for the British. But instead of leading them to the fort he is actually leading them deeper into the forest away from the fort into a trap. They eventually meet up with Uncas, his father Chingachgook and a frontiersman named Hawkeye. Hawkeye recognizes Magua and says the coolest thing: "Magua!! I told you that if I ever saw your ugly face again...!" Magua glares at Hawkeye and runs into the forest as Uncas runs after renegade indian to see where his men are hiding. That night Chingachgook watches over Heyward and the women while Uncas and Hawkeye look for a safe way out of the forest. Chingachgook gives Alice a blue turtle necklace that was given to him when he was a young brave to comfort her and it ultimately saves her in the end. He will also later give his life to save the life of his son Uncas who was "the last of the Mohicans." In the end they make it to Fort Ticonderoga where Colonel Munro reunites with his daughters having never got his heart torn out and eaten by Magua. (remember this is a children's show)
This show has a lot of characterization in it as we learn that Cora and Major Heyward have a thing for eachother, Alice is poor mannered and has an annoying dog named Pip that gets them into trouble all the time and that Hawkeye's real name is "Natty Bumppo" (Nathaniel Poe in the 1992 movie) which Alice mistakes for the name of a mosquito bite. There are some cool actors in this including the voice talents of Casey Kasem as Uncas and Joan Van Ark as Cora. As far as I know there no special features on it, but no matter what I cant wait to get this! Koch Vision didn't do the best job remastering this cartoon, but at least they didn't do as bad of a job on it as they did The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I'm ecstatic about this considering that the VHS I have was taped by my dad over 20 years ago when I was a kid and now it is totally shot. All they have to do now is release Hanna Barbara's "Davy Crockett on the Mississippi" on dvd and I'll be a happy camper!! :-)
