Michael Moore's superb documentary (following in the footsteps of Roger & Me and The Big One) tackles a meaty subject: gun control. Moore skillfully lays out arguments surrounding the issue and short-circuits them all, leaving one impossible question: why do Americans kill each other more often than people in any other democratic nation? Moore focuses his quest around the shootings at Columbine High School and the shooting of one 6-year-old by another near his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. By approaching the headquarters of K-Mart (where the Columbine shooters bought their ammo) and going to Charlton Heston's own home, Moore demands accountability from the forces that support unrestricted gun sales in the U.S. His arguments are conducted with the humor and empathy that have made Moore more than just a gadfly; he's become a genuine voice of reason in a world driven by fear and greed. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore (Roger & Me) takes aim at America's love affair with guns and violence in this Oscar(r)-winning* film that "demands attention" (People)! Mixing riveting footage, hilarious animation and candid interviews with everyone from the NRA's Charlton Heston to shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, Bowling for Columbine is a "brilliant" (The Hollywood Reporter) tour de force of filmmaking. *2002: Documentary Feature

1 out of 5 stars Unless you're a newly hatched pod person..........2007-07-02

...you already know that one must consider the semiotics of exclusionism in order to fully understand Michael Moore's witticisms. But let me add that Michael lies routinely -- even under oath. I will start this discussion by arguing that "oligophrenic" hardly seems like a strong enough word to describe Michael. Then, I will present evidence that Michael is unable to support his assertions with documentation of any sort. Once we realize that, what do we do? The appropriate thing, in my judgment, is to clarify and correct some of the inaccuracies present in Michael's canards. I say that because to believe that he is the ultimate authority on what's right and what's wrong is to deceive ourselves. Ancient Greek dramatists discerned a peculiar virtue in being tragic. Michael would do well to realize that they never discerned any virtue in being unconscionable.

Michael's rejoinders are like an enormous barbarism-spewing machine. We must begin dismantling that structure. We must put a monkey wrench in its gears. And we must improve the physical and spiritual quality of life for the population at present and for those yet to come, because Michael has a one-track mind. That's clear. But either Michael has no real conception of the sweep of history, or he is merely intent on winning some debating pin by trying to pierce a hole in my logic with "facts" that are taken out of context. Now that this review is over, I pray that my logic and passion have convinced you that the most myopic personæ non gratæ I've ever seen thrive when the rest of us underestimate the threat they pose or are too weak or unorganized to hold the line.

4 out of 5 stars Improtant issues done well-with reservations.......2007-06-18

There is much to like AND dislike about this movie.

people often dismiss M/M as a leftist, but I think he strikes a balance in this film as an equal-opportunity critic of both the far left AND the far right (note the discussion with Marilyn Manson about Bill Clinton where they both are quite critical of Mr. Bill).

The sections on Canada and gun control are quite deep in debunking the rationales of causes of violence in America. However, trying to compare violence in different countires and cultures (i.e., comparing America's violent past with the fact that Germany has less violence today but was responsible for the Holocaust) depends on relativity and perspective.

The section on blacks, violence, and the media was dead-on target, with Mike and a white professor walking through South Central Los Angeles without anyone trying to harm them, although it would have been interesting if they had interviewed one of the residents about their opinions of the perceptions of their community. The cartoon on violence and race relations was also thought provoking, if a tad simplified (the 'toon omits the fact that blacks DID rebel against our oppression between the slave rebellions and Rosa Parks, although this is not well known among non-historians).

The Charlton Heston interview was ok, except I did not like the exploitation of the picture of the dead six year old Michigan girl who was killed by gunfire and what Mike does with the picture in this scene. This smacks of opporunitist grandstanding of the worst kind, and I would hate to see the reaction of the child's parents to this!

But that is the only thing I really disliked about the film. That aside, it says a lot of things that really need to be said and provokes a lot of thought.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as Farenheit.......2007-06-07

I expected a little more from this movie after watching Farenheit 911, perhaps Moore has gotten better with time. It's difficult to grasp what point he's trying to make in this film. In one breath Moore says that Americans are afraid of one another and lock their doors every night and behave irrationally, yet in the next he lists crime statistics as being multiple times higher than other countries. So what is the point? Americans lock their door because the crime rate is high, it seems like we're actually being intelligent rather than irrational. The cartoon with the Pilgrams and early America is hilarious and worth the price of admission, but even that winds up being very skewed at the end. I wish Moore would have tackled the problem of inner cities and the rampant gun problem rather than attack the "whites" throughout the entire film.

I am certainly in favor of far stricter regulations and laws regarding gun use, but Moore just seems to touch on way too many points that are disjointed. At one point he attacks the media for scaring us, yet he is a very member of this media and is basically just a reporter himself. There are some very humorous parts and some very intelligent insights, but Moore was definitely more polished by the time he produced Farenheit. I was slightly disappointed overall by this film, but it keeps your interest throughout.

5 out of 5 stars guns don't kill people?.......2007-04-23

This film, flawed as it may be (mostly in the eyes of its detractors), once again must confront the blatantly inane axiom that "guns don't kill people." Guns DO kill people; and the people who use them are the cowards that stand behind them. The American Rifle Murderers and others of their ilk try to hide behind a Second Amendment that is now outdated historically and morally. And their gun lobbying and support have produced not only Columbine but the most recent tragedy in Virginia (2007). MIchael Moore should be applauded and lionized as a humorist with a true grit kick. What he says in this film is played out in this free (to die) society on a daily basis.

1 out of 5 stars is this what liberals have been reduced to?.......2007-04-03

ive seen this movie and was disappointed. i mean ask yourselfs, is this about what really happend at columbine school or is just moore's opinion on a tragic event? id say its mostly moore's opinions on the subject. anyone in their right mind could easily tell ya guns dont kill people, people kill people. obviously moore ignored the students motive for their shootings. if people like moore did real research, they would explain why these two students went over the edge. its easy, they went two far after other students picked on a insulted them from time to time and like any student with low esteem, they decide to do somthing they regret. the problem is people cant get seema to get along with each other and instead call names, which libs would know all about that before they hear someone out. back to the movie, if moore really wanted this to be true, not only would he indeed talk about gun control, but how everyone should treat everyone else. u dont have to like each other, but should respect each other. i understand many might disagree with me on this review, but can i help being open-minded on issues????

At last, the British film classic The Shooting Party receives the digital restoration that does justice to its sweeping vistas and heartbreaking snapshots of an era in its death throes. Set in 1913 England, on the brink of what would be the war to end all wars, the film focuses on an assortment of upper-crust acquaintances who gather for a weekend of hunting and society niceties (billiards, cards, draping oneself in jewels the evening after stomping around all day in the muck). Presiding over the festivities is a masterful James Mason as Sir Randolph Nettleby, a sort of benevolent dictator of his breathtaking estate, as his family and friends dip in and out of the action, adhering to the strict code of class conduct for all of their affairs--sport, self-advancement, illicit love. Though the weekend is supposed to be a holiday, there is subtle, ominous foreshadowing in the very first scenes, of the men lined up in a meadow, as though troops on a battlefield, taking out ducks and hares with an almost dispassionate relish. The 2006 remastering allows full appreciation of the cinematography of Fred Tammes, the muted greens, grays and tweedy browns of the English countryside combining to make a painterly backdrop for this drama of manners. Mason as Nettleby has rarely been better--crisp, bemused, comfortable in his role but not quite in his own skin. The score by John Scott is transportative. Extras include a making-of documentary; a tour of the Knebworth House, the stately home here the film was shot; rare stills, and more. Splendid! --A.T. Hurley

    Description

In October 1913, a group of aristocratic men and women gather for a shooting party at an estate in the heart of the English countryside. Assured and opulent, they move through the elaborate rituals of an Edwardian country house party. But times are changing, The values that have ordered their glittering world will no longer have any meaning in the new age about to dawn.

    5 out of 5 stars Yummy.......2007-06-21

I caught this movie on late-night TV one time, and wanted to own it. I hesitated to buy the original DVD because of the negative comments about the quality of the transfer.

I just got the new DVD and I'm watching it right now. It's like taking a bath in pure Englishness. The color is perfect English autumn, and the sound is perfect. James Mason is perfect as the tired, end-of-an-era lord, while Sir John Gielgud is perfect as the upcoming liberal society. In the two of them you see the end of one epoch and the beginning of another. All that's missing is the transition, and it's about to arrive - in the form of WWI.

    This is one lovely movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply fabulous!.......2007-05-30

I have to say immediately that I have no technical knowlege concerning this DVD. I know absolutely nothing about film technology. All I can say is that I now own this movie in the DVD version by the BBC and it is simply fabulous. I never saw this either in a movie theatre or on video cassette so I have no point of reference concerning quality. The story appeals to me because of the subject matter and the quality of the casting. The location, costumes and makeup are simply the best. It is very much a film which holds the interest of anyone interested in the life styles and moral standards of Edwardian England. So many things are about to change in the lives of all these people and yet they cannot know this and go on about their lives just as they always have. One of the most moving aspects of the film for me is at the end when the characters names are flashed on the screen with the information of what happened to them during the war. Also, the extra feature where the casting and location details are discussed adds much to the enjoyment of this fine film.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in period English drama. I also purchased the book by Isabel Colegate and read it. I found that the film was very, very faithful to the book. In the extra features included with the DVD the author seemed to be well pleased with the efforts made by the producers to present her work as she would have wished. Good, enjoyable entertainment. Well worth it for any true Anglophile.

5 out of 5 stars End of an era - not entirely!.......2007-03-24

I'm lucky to own what must be an original video cassette of this film which I've had since new so have no problems with quality. Watching it again last night I wondered if there was still any reviews around of an 'old' film and thus came upon Amazon.

I would agree with most of the comments made - the elegiac quality, superb acting within an ensemble setting and the faithfulness to period. However, it did strike me, viewing this again, the Edwardian society mores depicted did not end with the Great War in 1915. Far from it, they were still alive and well in the 1920's the era 'Gosford Park' depicted, also faithfully. I'm sure there are many people around today, like myself, who can recall the stories their grandparents told about pre-World War II society and World War I in some instances. It was still about 'us' and 'them', 'upstairs and downstairs, and whilst there may have been a housemaid, or cook problem, 'service' was still a major aspect of employment, especially for women.

Even today, 'The Shooting Party' as a private as opposed to commercial affair is a feature of country life, if you move in, for instance, the Prince of Wales's circles. Who could ever forget the photograph of he and his valet Fawcett, taken in the last five years? Their 'shooting dress' was straight out of the Edwardian Era, not a garb to be returned to the Costume Department of the the film production company after use. Perhaps the Prince is hoping for a remake to air his fashion sense.

I think it is also true to say the sense of honour of Nettleby (James Mason), with his Corinthian ideals, also continued to exist certainly until World War II. Anyone reading the literature between the wars will be struck by the preponderance, especially in children's literature which was hugely influential as essentially the only 'media' source of information, by the emphasis on 'Play up, play up and play the game'. This attitude in the era of Empire was regarded as essential if Britain was to retain respect as a hegemonic power. Obviously for a large number of people this ethos didn't 'take', but there were still enough people around more than thirty years after the death of Gordon Jackson's character in the film to echo his dying words, 'God bless the British Empire.'

What has changed substantially since the Great War is the cynicism of an educated few towards public life. Today, with the growth of media and mass education, the offensive behaviour of people in the public eye, whether politician, aristocrat or 'celebrity' has created universal cynicism. This has destroyed the quality of 'innocence', or simple decency depicted so skilfully by James Mason who's gentleman's manners extend to being courteous to a trespasser on his land and party.

The other change in society is the belief of the Edwardians, based on their even more reticent Victorian parent's standard of behaviour, that private ignoble behaviour, whether it be hypocrisy, adultery, business malfeasance, coarseness or anything else should remain so. It was not something to be aired in polite society, and if it was, the perpetrator would become a social paraiah, an outcast. Contrasting this ideal with Page Three of 'The Sun' and the typical headlines of the past few years that politicians, sportsmen and businessmen have attracted and the difference between 1913 and the new millennium is easy to see.

So 'The Shooting Party' is actually a microcosm of a small part of English landed society at a particular time in history. It is richly endowed with attention to every detail of behaviour and dress and impeccably acted within a setting which makes one yearn nostalgically for 'old England'. It creates a romantic view of a society where a very few had the best of everything, whilst the majority lived very hard lives trying to sustain themselves and uphold 'traditions' imposed upon them and enforced by a harsh system of legal and social punishments. In the film we're led to believe those people living on Nettleby's estate lived charmed lives guided by his patronage. The reality was often very different, but who can cavil with the gentle and complex rhythm of an exquisitely produced piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful film worth owning.......2007-02-22

I was anxious to have this film, as I had read and loved the exquisite Isabel Colegate novel. As other reviews have, I'd advise anyone to make sure to purchase this newly remastered (BBC Oct. '06) version. Although the film doesn't include every detail from the book, it comes close. Certainly a film to watched many times both for its nuanced story as well as its scenic beauty.

    5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2006-08-25

I cannot say enough good about this film. It is brilliant on so many levels. James Mason and John Gielgud were never better and the rest of the cast were perfectly chosen and rose to the occasion. This is what Gosford Park wanted to be but just did'nt make it and I liked Gosford Park. I am so glad a good quality DVD is available at last. In my opinion a must for any film collection. Please watch this with the time to devote your full attention to it, you will be well rewarded

The compelling Coyote Waits is based on one of the Leaphorn and Chee mystery novels by Tony Hillerman (all three have been adapted for television), concerning a partnership, of sorts, between an experienced Navajo detective, Joe Leaphorn (Wes Studi), and a young reservation cop, Jim Chee (Adam Beach). When the latter's colleague and friend ends up shot to death and left to burn in a fiery car, Chee takes time off to evaluate whether he should become a healer instead of a lawman. Either way, he can't proceed without getting to the bottom of the killing and proving or disproving his own original assumption that the murderer is a shaman he found drunk and in possession of a gun near the crime. Working the case from a different angle is Leaphorn, who finds a link between the shaman and a missing university professor on the trail of a major historical find. Beach and Studi are terrific, though the story doesn't bring them together, in the same space, very often. (The two characters do most of their communicating by phone.) Familiar faces in the supporting cast include Gary Farmer (Dead Man), Keith Carradine (Deadwood), and Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves). Sheila Tousey is outstanding in her recurring role as Emma Leaphorn, Joe's wise, no-nonsense wife. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Good movie and price.......2007-06-22

This is a good movie with Studi and Beach turning in solid performances again in this sequel to "Skinwalkers". If you enjoy detective stories, you should find this one entertaining. Fans of the first movie or those that enjoy movies like "Thunderheart" should like it. This Amazon price is a good since these Hillerman DVD movies are not easy to find unless you go to [...]. However; there they are overpriced since by the time you pay for shipping and tax you end up spending about $[...]. So get your Hillerman DVDs here or at Deepdiscount.com.

    4 out of 5 stars Coyote Waits.......2007-04-01

An excellent film and a must for any Tony Hillerman fan. I loved the production, the wonderful New Mexican scenery, and seeing a bit more of the modern Navajo way.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible movie.......2007-01-01

fell asleep twice trying to get through this movie. I kept hoping it would finally get interesting but it never did.

As reviewer: B. Chandler "xyzzy" (Arlington, Texas)said,"Jim Chee sits drinking coffee while partner Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez meets his demise. Chee catches the obvious perpetrator. A Navaho shaman, with a bottle in one hand and THE gun in his belt. Case closed."

The Tony Hillerman books are good stories - read them and skip these god awful movies.

I should have rented first instead of wasting money buying. There were so many good actors in this movie I thought it would be okay but even they couldn't get past the stinky script writing.

I also thought Adam Beach was terrible in this movie. Unemotional, sounded like he was unsure of his lines, fresh from his first acting class?

Wes Studi and Graham Greene were great, as usual. Wes wore some pretty spiffy threads in a lot of his scenes so that helped make up for suffering through such an awful film. Although there was a scene where Wes wore sunglasses when no one else was wearing them so it looked awkward. See how boring the movie was? I made it through the movie by napping, checking out their outfits, watching body language, and looking over the sets and scenes.

The blond TA character was also awful. Jeeze, what a friggin sterotype - yet another dumb blond TA doing her professor. EEEch. Then trying to come on to Adam Beach's character. Eyes rolling....

Get a lot of foam bricks if you are determined to watch this awful movie.

1 out of 5 stars Typical Hollywood mangling.......2006-01-31

Typical Hollywood mangling of a good book. Read the book instead. But the book is tougher on the reader than some earlier Hillerman books.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, a Satisfying Hillerman Adaptation.......2003-12-18

"Coyote Waits", brought to the small screen by the same team that produced the lamentable "Skinwalkers", is a satisfying experience for Tony Hillerman fans, for fans of movie mysteries in general, and for folks interested in the portrayal of Native Americans, in this case the Navajo (Dine'). It would appear that the writers listened to the complaints about "Skinwalkers" and came up with a story that adheres much more closely to Hillerman's plot and to the author's portrayal of his main characters, particularly Jim Chee (played by Adam Beach) and Joe Leaphorn (Wes Studi). Like any novel adapted into a two-hour movie, there are conflations of characters and substantial trimmings in the narrative. Nonetheless, the major plotlines in the book are dealt with here in a generally satisfactory way, although the climax was a bit too pat based on the information that the viewer was given during the course of the investigation into the death of Officer Delbert Nez. The principal character change in the film involves the substitution of Leaphorn's wife Emma(who died in the earlier book) for Professor Borbonnette, a change that is not particularly jarring in this context. Kept intact from the book is the relationship between the traditionalist Chee (studying to be a haatali, or medicine man) and the rationalist Leaphorn (firmly in touch with his own Dine' culture, but deeply skeptical of some of its beliefs). All in all, the treatment accorded to "Coyote Waits" bodes well for future productions in the series. Hopefully, "Thief of Time" will be next.

In Get Rich or Die Tryin', rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson presents himself as a rap superhero, encased in muscular flesh like armor, his face impassive as a mask, reaching out to destroy his enemies with his unique talent. The plot, though based on Jackson's life, is standard--a gangster breaks from his youthful life of crime to triumph as a rapper--but there's vitality in the details: Jackson's girlfriend helps him pull free the wires holding his jaw shut when he's recovered from being shot in the face; a startling, brutal fight by naked men in a prison shower. Jackson even has his comic-book moment of transformation when a razor blade is thrown into his cell, encouraging him to kill himself; instead, he uses it to carve his rhymes into the walls. Unfortunately, as an actor Jackson only has two sides, gangster hard or oddly childlike and vulnerable. This second aspect falls away from the movie as Jackson assumes power, leaving only the cold, impassive face of a tough guy. That's the fate of superheroes too--they become the mask they present to the world, which is both their dream and their fate. Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow) livens things up as a volatile prison friend. Also featuring Bill Duke (Predator) as a raspy ganglord and Joy Bryant (Honey) as Jackson's girlfriend. Capably directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America). --Bret Fetzer

Firstly, I am a 59-year old grandmother and rap and the drug culture are far out of my realm. However, while channel surfing one evening, I came upon this movie. (My daughters of fans of 50-cent's music and I was curious). This movie was intriguing and although offended by the violence and language, it was an opportunity to be non-judgmental and look at the story and the quality of the movie. I saw it to the end. It would be difficult to see this movie again, but I thought it was a good one. The actress who played his son's mother was outstanding, and the protaganist was very convincing.

    Product Description

THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON began as a film portrait of Hampton and the Illinois Black Panther Party, but half way through the shoot, Hampton was murdered by Chicago policeman. In an infamous moment in Chicago history and politics, over a dozen policeman burst into Hampton s apartment while its occupants were sleeping, killing Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark and brutalizing the other occupants. Filmmakers Mike Gray and Howard Alk arrived a few hours later to shoot film footage of the crime scene that was later used to contradict news reports and police testimony. Recently restored and reworked by Gray, THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON is a chilling slice of American history.

Also included is a short film, CICERO MARCH, which chronicled a group who defied Mayor Richard J. Daley s order to march into predominantly white Cicero to protest racism and injustice.

    4 out of 5 stars "I am a revolutionary.".......2007-05-26

Fred Hampton was a leader of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther movement when he was shot to death by the police in his apartment on December 4th, 1969. The film "The Murder of Fred Hampton" was initially designed to chronicle a portrait of this popular black leader, but instead the film took an unexpected twist after Hampton's murder.

The film's archival footage is invaluable for anyone interested in the history of the Black Panther movement, but the viewer will be best served watching the film with some prior knowledge of the major figures or a little background history. The film is rather shapeless--due no doubt to the unexpected turn of events, so the footage doesn't present a seamless story of Hampton's life and death. Instead the film offers glimpses of Hampton's life and depicts him speaking at various meetings, participating in a mock trial (in real-life, he was tried and convicted for robbing an ice cream seller), and organizing various Black Panther community activities, etc. The film contains some startling prophetic moments, and details Hampton predicting his own violent death. There's also archival footage of Black Panther outdoor meetings--heavily attended by the ever-present FBI and local police force. It's clear there's no love lost on either side. Insults are flung at the police, and the tension in the air is palatable.

The film is at its strongest as the filmmakers pore over evidence at the scene. The "official" police version (complete with a reenactment) is set in contrast to witnesses. But the strongest evidence is the physical trail, and the blood soaked mattress left after the slaughter. A great deal of the film is devoted to the physical evidence that challenges the official story--pointing out the "bullet holes" that supposedly were fired by the Panthers, for example. According to the filmmakers--Mike Gray and Howard Alk--the grand jury investigation ruled that the police fired 99 shots with just one possible bullet fired from those inside the apartment. Was this an "assassination," a cold-blooded hit? Well watch the film and decide for yourself. If you are interested in the history of the Black Panthers, I also recommend "What We Want, What We Believe: The Black Panther Party Library"--displacedhuman

    Description

In the DMZ separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier. But the 11 bullets found in the bodies, together with the 5 remaining bullets in the assassin's magazine clip, amount to 16 bullets for a gun that should normally hold 15 bullets. The investigating Swiss/Swedish team from the neutral countries overseeing the DMZ suspects that another, unknown party was involved - all of which points to some sort of cover up. The truth is much simpler and much more tragic.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars J.S.A. - Joint Security Area .......2007-04-10

One of the best from Korea. It shows the real life approach to the situation at the DMZ.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging thriller that works despite its flaws.......2007-02-25

Some movies are just outright masterpieces: something that you wouldn't be able to change one frame because it's so perfect. Then you get those films that are outright terrible; simply because of a bad acting, script and others. Then we get films like Joint Security Area: they're great and entertaining but then there's something that nags that prevents from being given full marks. Kind of like not getting 100% on an exam because you filled in the circle half-way a la Homer. Of course I gave it 5 stars but you almost wish it did one thing differently so you can say it was a near-perfect film.

On the line dividing North and South Korea rests the Joint Security Area, a military outpost guarded by both sides forces. When a couple North Korean officers are found murdered and an officer from each side is taken into custody, a neutral Korean investigator from Switzerland, Sophie Jean, is brought in to figure out what happened that night while making sure she doesn't upset either side. Figuring out what happened and the personal matters that affected the soldiers from both sides is the fun in the movie.

I should get this out of the way. People will disagree with me on this and I did like its inclusion but it felt too long at times as well. We found out an interesting connection between the soldiers from both sides in flashbacks that reveal something different than just bitter enemies going at it. While it does humanize an event that was quickly labelled an attack on a government, there's so many scenes of it that it becomes less an exciting mystery and more like a well-made drama. That's all I'm going to say about the plot: don't expect you're walking into a massive shoot-em-up and you'll be just fine.

Where the film does work is its acting. Probably best known from Lady Vengeance, Lee-ae Young is a great and capable officer who tries to figure everything out. The rest of the cast is memorable as well, including the leads from Mr. Vengeance. For those of you looking for iconic images a la corridor fight in Oldboy or dogboy in Lady Vengeance will find a couple but they're not as pronounced but I love the ending where we scan over a photograph.

The problem with the DVD is not with the picture but with the sound. First of all, it boots up with the 5.1 English dub, which as you can guess, is horrendous. Then of course there's some hilarious subtitle errors including my favorite. The opening text reveals Korea free from "Japaness rules". The big faux-pas is the Korean soundtrack which is in 2.0. Yes...measly piece of elephant crap 2.0. This is a big blemish, especially since it's supposed to be the first and main soundtrack of the film.

If you can find it, track this film down. It's no Oldboy so don't bother thinking it is. Walk into it cold with no preconceptions and you'll have a blast...remember to click the Korean dub first though.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding And Unforgettable Film!.......2006-12-16

This outstanding film takes place at the DMZ [Demilitarized Zone] separating North and South Korea. One of the worlds most sensitive military and political regions in the world. When two North Korean soldiers are discovered dead, and two South Korean soldiers suspected in their murders, a team of neutral countries are gathered to determine the cause of what has happened: in which the fate of renewed hostilities between the two countries becomes all too real. I don't want to give out any spoilers in this film, therefore, I must leave out important information which will ruin the film for you if I divulge too much.

There is more to the deaths of the two North Korean soldiers, and the two South Korean soldiers being questioned by the neutral investigators that makes this film so different and outstanding. This is one of the better films to tackle a suspenseful subject matter that I have seen in a long, long time. The film moves between the present and the past. Each giving the viewer vignettes of what has transpired that has caused this tragedy. And although the film is tragic, there is also hope in the film: Hope for those who wish to see a better tomorow between this divided nation.

The storyline and cinematography is excellent, and as usual, Park Chan-wook weaves a magical tapestry of a film. He is truly one of the greatest directors in the business today. In fact, he is a directorial artist. [If there is such a term] He has a vision of directing that very few in the business have today: Every subject matter he seems to tackle comes off brilliantly. I look forward to more of his films. [Take notice Hollywood!] I recommend the film highly, you will not be disappointed. Highly, highly recommended. [Stars: 5+]

    5 out of 5 stars suspenseful..........2006-10-05

very well made movie...it is amazing how fast the South Korean film industry has propelled themselves onto the world stage. even though this was made quite a few years ago, it is still worth buying for collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible film.......2006-05-12

This is an incredible movie that tells a story of friendship against a political backdrop. One night shots break out at the JSA leaving 2 North Korean soldiers dead, one south korean soldier in a catatonic shock, and another southern soldier suicidal. A Korean-Swiss soldier is assigned to the case to find out what happened, all the while maintaining her neutrality.
What unfolds is the story of a complex friendship between a pair of northern soldiers with a pair of southern soldiers. Chan Wook Park is gaining fame for his Revenge Trilogy as well as his part in Three... Extremes, but out of all his work it is JSA that stands out for me.
He handles the friendship between the soldiers masterfully; they form a strong bond, looking at each other as brothers, but at the same time there is a sense that the bond will be easily broken.
At the end, when we see that a throw away scene actually has a meaning, it is enough to bring a person to tears.

This first commercially available video version of the legendary 26-second "Zapruder Film"--the 8mm record of John F. Kennedy's 1963 assassination, which was filmed by Abraham Zapruder--provoked a storm of controversy when it first appeared on video shelves. Added to the National Film Registry in 1994, this historical document remains a significant record of one of the nation's most devastating events and is still cited as a key piece of evidence in the debate over the truth of Kennedy's murder. This unprecedented release has been digitally mastered with the approval of the Zapruder family. An accompanying documentary, which explores the mastering process in detail, features a short portrait of Zapruder and a fascinating history of the film's official and unofficial showings up to the present. The tape also includes a frame-by-frame analysis of the film, a chronology of events, and additional historical video. This short film is still too gruesome and upsetting for many to watch, but Abraham Zapruder's famous home movie remains to this day one of the most controversial pieces of filmed history. --Sean Axmaker

    5 out of 5 stars just a minor correction.......2007-01-09

Mrs. Kennedy was not trying to help the Secret Service Agent when she crawled out onto the trunk. She was trying to recover part of her husband's skull that had blown back onto the trunk. Which by the way indicates that he was shot not from the school book depository behind him but from the front right.

5 out of 5 stars History as you may never see again .......2006-07-06

Eyewitnesses are given too much credibility and are notoriously inaccurate. Conspiracy buffs have fashioned an industry out of events told and retold but this footage is the best witness. It is also horrific to watch. I had heard the Parkland surgeons all talk about a head wound behind the President's right ear. They should know, they were there right? The film shows otherwise. If there is a conspiracy it is a well kept secret, show me someone who can keep a secret. If the US government is hiding evidence why is this footage available? No one can tell where a shot came from by the target's movement. The answer to where JFK's missing brain is here, the third shot pulverized it, turning it into a red mist. Had this film never existed the conspiracy people would have made millions more but the answers to their questions are in this footage. This is history which cannot be retold by bad historians or knuckleheads. See for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Zapruder was unexpectedtly caught up in history.......2006-04-27

Abraham Zapruder was a Dallas dress manufacturer who enjoyed making home movies with his Bell and Howell camera. He almost lost his opportunity to film the presidential motorcade on that fateful November day in 1963 until urged by his secretary to rush home and get his camera before it was too late. He chose a spot in Dealy Plaza which was in between The Texas School Book Depository and the infamous Grassy Knoll. Steadied by his secretary as he stood on a concrete pedestal (he was afraid of falling), Zapruder filmed the entire assassination of JFK. The 26 second film has been digitally enhanced for this DVD and offers a vivid account of the event in all of it's horrific best. It is up to the viewer to decide where the bullets came from during the shooting.

IMO, all of the shots came from the rear in the direction of the TSBD. The head shot proves this because in the very first frame (313), Kennedy's head is push forward then in the next frame the explosion of his head creates a "jet effect" which propels JFK rapidly back in his seat. No Grassy Knoll shooter IMO. It is truly amazing that Zapruder could keep his camera running and focused during the ordeal because he was screaming "They killed him!!, they killed him!!,...Being a private, quiet kind of person put him in the spotlight and haunted him for the rest of his life.

5 out of 5 stars image of an assination-A new look at rhe Zapruder film.......2006-03-14

Get the edition put out by the Discovery Channel which is no longer published It contained the most important DVD disc part 7-8-9 that the goverment does not want you to see. You will probably need to settle for a copy of that disc It is quite expensive. I got a copy wich I was very happy with. It is most important and is case closed as far as I am concerned on the goverments involement in our presidents death. What else does our Goverment hide and cover-up? Most important to see. Our countrys survival depends on many more citizen becoming aware of this kind of Goverment behavior and coveup.

5 out of 5 stars Great version of the Z film; excellent bonus stuff:).......2005-12-18

I highly recommend this flawed by very well done (like that oxymoron? grin) dvd about the Zapruder film. Of particular note is the sprocket hole information depicting JFK's Secret Service agents. Get this!

1 out of 5 stars Bobby Hull Sr. should have made a DVD.......2007-05-26

There isn't much substance to this DVD. There are a few points and that was it. The DVD is only 35 minutes long and the same play (from one of Brett Hull's game) was shown over and over and over. Maybe half of the video was used on reshowing that one move. Other than that, cameo appearances from Dad and not much to learn.

    5 out of 5 stars scoring........2007-05-14

I have watched this video many times already in the two months I have owned it. I highly recommend it. It is informative and fun to watch some of the highlight film within the film.

    5 out of 5 stars Excelent .......2007-01-21

This DVD is one of "the must to" for training every age hockey players...

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!.......2007-01-08

After taking a short 17 years off from hockey, getting back into it seriously was a challenge. I took a few adult learn-to-play classes and there wasn't much, if any, focus on shooting. A majority of it was spent on passing and moving. After doing some homework, I took the plunge and bought the video. BEST MONEY EVER SPENT!! I was literally hitting the crossbar after watching the wrist shot segment a few times and practicing the principles as they were explained for about 20 minutes.

The explanations, demonstrations, dry-land walk & talk through as well as the on-ice real-time and slow motion video from multiple angles with on-screen highlighting is absolutely phenominal. It pointed out everything I was doing wrong. Within minutes I had corrected the basic problems and was hitting the goal. After about 20 minutes of practicing, I was putting the puck exactly where I wanted it. The folks I play with noticed the difference too. I scored 2 points last game; I was playing defense and hit them from the blue line! I am no longer the "sympathy pass" receiver and am now on the forward line instead of defense.

If you're in the market for a very detailed, step-by-step instructional dvd to get you shooting like a pro in short order, this is the video for you! I can't wait until the pond freezes over to get out and try the drills at the end of the video.

    5 out of 5 stars shooting explained.......2005-10-23

Having started playing hockey as an adult there were a lot of basics that I had missed....how to properly tape a stick, correct stick length,etc...this video covered them all. Clearly explains the fundamentals of shooting and more importantly scoring goals. My shot has improved a ton after applying the techniques described here....pick it up and watch for your name on the scoresheet after every game!!!
