5 out of 5 stars Hoppy rides again, just like way back when........2007-06-08

Watching this dvd of Hopalong Cassidy featuring 5 of his movies transported me back to a time long gone, when as a very young feller my friends & i would eagerly attend the local picture theatre for the saturday afternoon matinee whenever there was a Hoppy movie on. The vision & audio on this dvd is absolutley first class, considering these movies were made around 60 odd years ago it is a credit to the U.S.Television Office Inc. for how they have digitally enhanced & restored these movies.

5 out of 5 stars How did they do that?????.......2007-01-30

The quality is so good that you will think you are watching brand new prints in the best theater on Main Street in the 1940s. Actually it's probably better than that. The intro says these digital re-masters were done by a company named "US Television Office, Inc.". For goodness sake, every person or studio who has old prints TAKE THEM TO "US TELEVISION OFFICE, INC." AND GET THEM RE-MASTERED. Platinum has released 8 volumes of these Hoppy feature films and I own all 8. But for some strange reason, probably only known to some "power lunch" executive, they did not number the volumes...so you will just have to tell the difference by the numbers Amazon gives them. They are worth twice or 3 times the price. There were 66 Hopalong Cassidy films made starring William Boyd, and you can own 40 of them with these 8 volumes at a slim price. The 5 Hoppy adventures on this volume are:
1. Border Patrol 1943
2. Doomed Caravan 1941
3. Fool's Gold 1947
4. Forty Thieves 1944
5. Hidden Gold 1940

As a child I was in love with TV westerns. Actually, I was in love with horses. I was also fickle. One day it was Trigger, Roy Roger's palomino...then it was Champion, Autry's mount. Silver, Scout, Diablo, Loco all made their bids for my heart, but one big white horse had it always. He was Topper and he was ridden by Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd), hard-working foreman of the Bar 20 Ranch.

I not only watched Hoppy and Topper faithfully, but was able to go on the sets and sometimes location to watch them shoot the episodes. My great uncle was Sherman L. Lowe, and he wrote many of the Hoppy episodes (he also did Ramar of the Jungle, Gene Autry, and the Cisco Kid...and penned the movie "Cat Man of Paris"...but we don't admit to the latter in polite society ;) )

As a devoted niece, it falls upon me to laud my great uncle (and he often reminded me how great he was!) It couldn't have been easy grinding out all those horse operas, but he loved it, and I think he did himself proud. Of all the westerns on early TV, Hopalong Cassidy was my favorite, and remains so today. The show was well directed, full of action, and starred a man who never over-played his role, and still won the hearts of his viewers. (Oh, did I mention that MANY episodes were VERY well-written?)

Seriously, though...if you are a fan of the 40's and 50's TV westerns, you can't go wrong with Hopalong Cassidy. The show made the most of what it was, and never let the viewers down. Action, adventure, and a big white horse... Ahhhhhhh...that's MY kind of western!

(How'd I do, Uncle Sherm?)

5 out of 5 stars "Hoppy comes to the rescue in another shoot-out adventure".......2005-04-24

The most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures "Hopalong Cassidy", under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and a man of his word...the plots were solid with a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension-building music.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitchrack, was chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite ~ "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes even William Boyd.

In this Volume One we have five films of the following:

BORDER PATROL (1943-B&W-65 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Jay Kirby (Johnny Travers), George Reeves, Duncan Reynaldo, Robert Mitchum.

As Texas Rangers, Hoppy, California and Johnny trying to end a scheme which smuggles Mexicans into the United States to become essentially slaves in a silver mine owned by Orestes Krebs...The three Rangers are captured, sentenced to hang, and then escape. They free the slaves and capture the bad guys...Duncan Renaldo (The Cisco Kid) as a Mexican police commandant...Robert Mitchum plays a badman of the plains...lots of action including four gunfights, plus comedy and get camaraderie by the entire Paramount cast.

DOOMED CARAVAN (1941-B&W-62 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Morris Ankrum, Minna Gombell

With Jane Travers next caravan, she asks Hoppy to guard against the bandits who have been out to stop her shipments...men dressed as soldiers to escort the caravan are fake...Hoppy immediately sees through this farce and he, the Bar 20 boys foil that plan...but as the plot would have it, everyone is captured but Hoppy and are being sent off to the firing squad. Now Hoppy has to find a way to save them singlehandedly...Hoppy must make sure this doesn't happen...will Hoppy succeed...will there be another chapter in the Adventures of Hopalong Cassidy...don't miss the final conclusion of this exciting B-Western to end all B-Westerns!

FOOL'S GOLD (1947-B&W-63 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins), Robert Emmett Keane, Steve Barclay, Jane Randolph, Harry Cording

Hoppy is requested by the Colonel to bring back his son to face a court marshal...the Bar 20 foreman (Hoppy) finds him in Professor Dixon's gang, who is out to swindle the government of a large gold shipment. But just as Hoppy and his friends learn Dixon is substituting copper bars plated with gold for the real ones...will they be able to ride fast enough to catch up with the gang and stop the real gold shipment from being stolen...well, you know Hoppy, and when danger and outlaws are involved he usually comes through and saves the day.

FORTY THIEVES (1948-B&W-60 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Jimmy Rogers (Himself), Kirk Alyn, Glenn Strange, Hal Taliaferro, Louise Currie, Herbert Rawlinson, Jack Rockwell

Hoppy is beaten by Jerry Doyle in a local sheriff election...Doyle a gutless nobody is elected by every outlaw and badman in town...when Hoppy tries to impeach the sheriff, the outlaw leader Tad Hammond sends for and hirs 40 gunhands to stop this action by our man in black...can Hoppy walk away from this in one piece...more than a dozen men come at Cassidy with guns blazing, but our hero shoots the lights out and gives them what for and sends them packing to the calaboose (the jail)

HIDDEN GOLD (1940-B&W-61 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Britt Wood (Speedy), Roy Barcroft, Eddie Dean, Jack Rockwell, Ruth Rogers, Ethel Wales.

Having been called in to investigate a series of stage holdups, Hoppy and Lucky Jenkins use the excuse to visit an old pal of the Bar 20 Speedy (Britt Wood)...Hoppy suspects it may be ex-outlaw Colby (Roy Barcroft) who is taking gold from his own mine and robbers elsewhere...Speedy strikes gold and Cassidy borrows it then announces a fresh shipment hoping to catch the gang and their leader...final scene is worth the price of a ticket, as Hoppy follows the number one boss into the shaft and dukes it out...this wranglers is why Hopalong Cassidy is still the best in the west!

Hoppy's interaction with California Carlson (Andy Clyde) is always a shot in the arm with his down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, theses scenes are pure Americana! Boyd, with his silver hair, black clothes and white horse (Topper) rode into our lives and we've never been the same since...your children and grandchildren will enjoy this clean wholesome entertainment...Hoppy always wore two silver white handle six shooters, never drank or smoked, when the good guys always won and the moral to the story was fair-play...outstanding role model...gotta love it!

Another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films...a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Andy Clyde (California Carlson) for comedy, left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

William Boyd was my hero, this collection of five films are perfect, clear and give me hope for the future. Our youth should have such a hero to look up to today. Must mention the fact that I still miss one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks though, George "Gabby" Hayes, you're durn tootin'!

Paramount and Clarence E. Mulford's fictional western character Hopalong Cassidy comes to life through William Boyd as Hoppy and Andy Clyde as California with films from the '40s...horse operas directed by Lesley Selander and George Archainbaud...some of the best hard riding and smokin' gunplay that ever came across the big screen from the Bar 20 boys...just the way we like 'em.

Hoppy let's us move from the west to the tall timber country in "Riders of the Timerline". He and California Carlson help catch a band of crooks who want to cut down and destroy precious mountain ridges full of trees.

Anyone who is not only a Hoppy fan, can also enjoy the early career of Robert Mitchum. He got his start in the early Hoppy movies and appears always as one of the bad guys in these western classics.

If you like shoot outs, horseback chases through beautiful locations, heros who understand values and principles, funniest side kicks to have ever been filmed, and just plain good American West fun, then you must have this classic collection of Hopalong Cassidy movies. You can let your children watch them and be a kid with them in these clean wholesome movies.

Mulford's fictional western character "Hopalong Cassidy" came to life through the producing of Harry "Pop" Sherman and the realistic performance of William Lawrence Boyd...as Hoppy aims to do some trailing for cattle rustlers, clean up a wild town and save the under-dog...always filmed in the great outdoors of Lone Pine, California at the foothills of Mount Whitney, beautiful photography is exceptional for a "B" product.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitch rack, chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes, even William Boyd.

5 out of 5 stars Best Value for Money in DVD.......2004-10-16

Marvelous! Five, yes 5, Hopalong Cassidy B Westerns for less than half the price that one could reasonably expect to pay for one. Image Entertainment's 'Hopalong Cassidy - The Early Years' are priced at around $22.00 for just two movies. So, these get five stars for value, five stars for quality (all movies are digitally remastered) and an average three and a half stars for production values of the movies themselves. (I rate most B Westerns between One and a half and three and a half stars as all are low to medium budget; at best) These are the later years, 1940 plus, and have stars like Robert Mitchum in the early stages of his career.
I've not a lot to say about the movies themselves with the exception of 'Wide Open Town' (1941) because you know what to expect with regards to this type of film and none of these will disappoint. 'Wide Open Town' is a remake of 'Hopalong Cassidy Returns' (1936) and has some interesting observations which I shall share.
1) Evelyn Brent the saloon owner and boss of the villians, she plays the same role in both, even some of the dialog is word for word identical; which means the producers must have reworked and borrowed heavily from the same script.
2) In 'Hopalong Cassidy Returns' Morris Ankrum (aka Stephen Morris) plays Evelyn Brent's henchman 'Blackie' and he foully murders the local crippled newspaper editor. In 'Wide Open Town' Morris Ankrum plays the part of the newspaper editor and is on the side of "Hoppy". Comedy relief is ably carried out by Andy Clyde as California instead of George 'Gabby' Hayes 'Windy Holiday'.
In spite of the above, these two movies are not entirely the same and the remake has some different twists in the story. The ending is a little happier!
I've purchased all of the first four volumns and have received two to date, Vols 1 & 4. I expect delivery of vols 2 & 3 any day now. I have also ordered, from Amazon, vols 5 to 8; 40 movies for $82.00 including postage and packing to Australia; unbelievable!!!
I would like to point out that these aren't Region 1 encoded as stated by Amazon. They are ALL REGIONS and can be played anywhere in the world. No matter where you live you can purchase these with confidence.

Always up for movies that Bill Boyd stared in and these 5 cover a range of years; so a host of different characters, sidekicks and villains come into play. They are totally entertaining and the message they give is still important now as it was then. I highly recommend them to anyone that likes stories of the old west.

4 out of 5 stars Hop Along Cassidy Vol 2.......2005-07-12

Anyone who is an early western and especially a Hopalong Cassidy fan will enjoy this 5 movie treat. California Carlson is one of the best side kicks to have ever played in the early westerns. His comedy is unique and his is timing perfect. Hopalong is at his best in these adventures. Anyone who is tired of the stuff churned out on today's TV choices can relax with these movies that contain not only lots of action and horseback chases, but comedy and intrigue. Be a kid again, or if you are still a kid discover why Hopalong Cassidy movies will always be in demand.

These movies are great for the whole family. They contain mild violence, only the good guys win, they are funny and full of adventure. Hoppy never drinks or smokes and provides morals and principles that we wish all kids could see and copy. If you want good movies for your kids (or grandkids) to watch, Hopalong Cassidy should always be on top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars My Hero.......2005-06-18

If you're a Hopalong Cassidy or "B" Western fan, you'll love this DVD. Over 5 hours of rip-snorting western action in 5 complete movies from the 1940s. It don't get much better than this, partner. Platinum Disc Corporation has done a great job in presenting this "Hoppy" series in 8 volumes totaling 40 films. I want more!

5 out of 5 stars "Hoppy, California & Lucky come to the rescue".......2005-04-10

The most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and generally rather inactive, and the plots also tended to inactivity until a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension-building music.

In this Volume 7 we have five films of the following:

BORDER VIGILANTES (1941/62 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Victor Jory, Morris Ankrum, Tom Tyler, Wally Wales (aka Hal Taliaferro), Britt Wood, Jack Rockwell

TWILIGHT ON THE TRAIL (1942/60 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Brad King (Johnny Nelson), Jimmy Wakely, Jack Rockwell, Ton London, Wanda McKay
Bar 20 trio is called on to stop cattle rustling...Hoppy, Lucky and California are chasing cattle rustlers and a crooked foreman is the main trouble...Hoppy and California finally find the rustler's hideout they also find themselves prisoners...can they get free and bring the outlaws to justice, stayed tuned and find out.

TEXAS MASQUERADE (1943/59 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Jimmy Rogers (Himself), Don Costello, Francis McDonald, John Merton, J. Farrell MacDonald, Russell Simpson

Sam Nolan, the local territory badman knows Hoppy and when he arrives on the the scene...Masquerade comes to a sudden end and Hoppy is in deep trouble.

THE MARAUDERS (1947/64 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins), Ian Wolfe, Earl Hodgins, Dorinda Clifton, Mary Newton,
Hoppy and his Bar 20 comrades take refuge in a church as a storm comes upon them...Riker arrives with his crew to tear the church down...Hoppy keeps them out, but then Riker surrounds the church and Hoppy and his friends find themselves prisoners...can Hoppy turn the tide on this one.

STRANGE GAMBLE (1948/60 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins), Francis McDonald, James Craven, Elaine Riley, Robert Williams.
Hoppy investigates counterfeiting in the U.S. and Mexico as an agent for the federal government...the name "Mordigan" keeps coming up and he joins forces hoping to find the source of the bills....with the help of California and Lucky things start getting decidely more interesting...Hoppy keeps his cool as usual.

5 out of 5 stars Hoppy does it again!.......2007-05-16

What's not to like with five Hoppy movies? Although one of the five has some transfer problems, the joy of watching square-shootin', rootin'-tootin' Hoppy and his Bar-20 companions take on the bad guys is truly a fun way to spend some hours. Any western movie aficionado will love these films. Looking forward to collecting all the sets in their glorious black-and-white Lone Pine settings. William Boyd remains one of the definitive cowboys of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Good stories!.......2007-02-07

Good quality so far. I like the early movies with Gabby Hayes the best, but these are really quite entertaining.

Once again Hopalong Cassidy rides across the screen guns a blazing. If you want to go back to your early days when movies were a treat get this collection of Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd)movies. "In Old California" is a classic in which Hoppy comes to the rescue of a friend of Hoppy's boss. It is full of action, suspense, and any movie with California Carlson is always a belly laugh that we all need from time to time.

These movies are perfect for the parent concerned with what their children watch on TV. They are full of examples supplied by Hoppy, California, and Lucky showing how to live without drinking alcohol, smoking, or use of bad language. They never harm or show disrespect to women, and are a great visual example of how to be an adult, for all kids to see and admire.

One of the most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures "Hopalong Cassidy", under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Clarity and sound are excellent. Was one of my favorites as a kid. The stories are good and many have different themes from most of your western movies. Hoppy was more of a detective than a cowboy. Enjoyed both greatly and am in the process of watching for a second time.

Cassidy and his Bar 20 comrades buy half interest in a ranch...Hoppy is framed for cattle rustling...and California and Wildcat Kelly strike oil, as they were drilling for water...that's just the tip of the iceberg of the adventure that is in store for Hoppy & California,

These discs contain the last 40 Hopalong Cassidy movies (5 films per disc)and are issued by Platinum Disc Co. A number of the earlier films were issued by Image Entertainment at two films per disc.
They are all official releases, have been remastered for sound and vision and are the full length uncut versions.Overall quality is excellent.
Although 'B'westerns the production values on the Cassidys was superior to most of the similar product of the time and it shows.
If you like Hoppy or 'B' westerns in general you will enjoy these and at the price is a real bargain.
Highly recommended

Volume 5 marks the new set of the Hopalong Cassidy series from Platinum. Volumes 1-4 were released a couple of months earlier. The 40 episodes in volumes 1-8 (5 episodes per volume) of circa early to late 40's Hoppies and the 20 episodes from Image (2 episodes per set) from the 30's provide the Hoppy film buffs with the essential collection for the genre. Hoppy westerns are B westerns with high production values (especially the 30's episodes). That makes them very pleasing to watch. Hoppy westerns are westerns, with no time-warping distortions where you see planes, cars, telephones, Nazis, etc., in an environment of tough cowboys packing pistols. Such are common with the Gene Autry and Roy Rogers fare of later years. As a young kid then, I was already discerning enough to know that cars, planes and gun toting cowboys don't mix. I know westerns require a suspension of reality to be enjoyable but mixing them with modern day apparatus make whole deal unbelievable and preposterous. Happily that is not the way with Hoppy westerns.

My first introduction to Hoppy was the 30 minute show with specially made for TV episodes (40 new episodes and some 12 movies cannibalized to fit the 30 minute format). I was not hot on Hoppy then for the TV shows were somewhat tepid. Also, Boyd then was somewhat aged for an action cowboy hero. His white hair didn't help any. Boyd started the series in the mid 30's at forty years of age. Is it any wonder then that new episodes canned in the 1951-53 make him appear as a "granpa" cowboy hero? It was only later in my maturity when I discovered the 30's and 40's Hoppy to realize these earlier features were A-1 quality westerns. The films are categorized as B westerns because they were a continuing series and the actors are B players. Other than that, the films are well made. The fact that there are many of them (66 to be exact) makes watching NOT not a boring endeavor.

If Platinum (ARE YOU READING THIS?) comes up with the 52 Hoppy 1950 specially made for TV episodes, I will also CONSUME THEM and SAVOR THEM. Well Platinum, do it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hoppy and California.......2007-01-05

Hopalong Cassidy and California Carlson were my heros on many a Saturday afternoon. For 35 cents I could see them in a movie and enjoy a box of delicious popcorn. Hoppy was my favorite over Roy and Gene. These movies hold up well, and the quality of the sound and picture is first rate. Getting 5 full length features at this incredibly low price is one of the best bargains on the internet. All 8 volumes are great fun. If you buy one I am sure you will buy the rest.

Hopalong Cassidy Vol. 8 just arrived and I couldn't wait to pop it into my DVD player. What a great job Platinum has done to remaster these old films and release them 5 to a disc. I now own 7 of the 8 available and expect my 8th one to arrive in the next day or two.

Any "B" Western and/or Hoppy fan should be pleased with any and all of these Platinum DVDs. My hope is that they continue with new releases until they've done them all. I'll be waiting.

5 more episodes that cover a range of years. All were filmed in the 40's or some of Bill Boyd's later films. The quality of the prints is high and so is the quality of the sound. They take me back to my childhood days where they could be seen on the TV but without the luxury of todays technology. If you like to see a spirit with the desire to do what is right these are right up your alley!

5 out of 5 stars "Hoppy's friendship & loyalty is still with us".......2005-04-11

In this Volume 6 we have five films of the following:

SECRETS OF THE WASTELAND (1941/66 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California), Brad King (Johnny Nelson),
Hoppy leads a scientific expedition and the Chinese who have a hidden settlement nearby are trying to stop them...a goldmine is in the picture and our three heroes from the Bar 20 are out to make it right.

HOPPY SERVES A WRIT (1942/70 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California), Jay Kirby (Johnny Travers), Victor Jory, George Reeves, Robert Mitchum, Roy Barcroft, Wally Wales, Earle Hodgins.
Hoppy crosses over into Oklahoma posing as a cattle buyer...the Jordan brother's are the rustlers he seeks... California and Johnny rustle the cattle and head them into Texas...if the Jordan's cross over to get back the cattle Hoppy can arrest them.

THE SILENT CONFLICT (1948/60 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Carlson), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins)
A mysterious concoctions has put Lucky under a spell and Hoppy and California set out to find him.

MYSTERY MAN (1944/60 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California), Jimmy Rogers (Himself), Don Costello, Francis McDonald, Forrest Taylor.
Hoppy does battle with the Trilling Gang...jail break, rustling cattle and outlaw leader posing as a Marshal keeps the Bar 20 in plenty of action.

HOPPY'S HOLIDAY (1947/59 mins/B&W)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins), Andrew Tombes, Leonard Penn, Jeff Corey.
Hoppy, California and Lucky are on a short vacation...Hoppy must find the real robbers so that he can clear California who is now in jail for innocently switching suitcases that contained the stolen money instead of his belonging...the Bar 20 boys will prevail, that you can count on.

Description

Another great double feature from that hero of the wild, wild west, Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy! In "3 on the Trail" (67 min.), an Englishman named Ridley, now turned rancher, announces that his cattle are disappearing, and Hopalong Cassidy helps him track down the rustlers. The second feature, "Hopalong Cassidy Returns" (74 min.), finds Bill on his way to Mesa Grande, where he is the new Marshal. Along the way he stops a runaway horse and saves a woman's life. Upon arriving in town, he discovers his old friend, the town's newspaper editor, has been brutally murdered by the very same woman Hoppy just saved, a hardnosed businesswoman who runs the town.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great production quality.......2003-10-30

Hopalong Cassidy movies always had high production quality; for B movies, it is obvious that the producer spent a lot of money--and it shows. Shot on location rather than in a back-lots like most old westerns, the sets and expansive outdoors locations are well represented on film. You just have to like Hoppy in black and George (later called "Gabby") Hayes as "Windy." Plenty of good acting, action, a touch of comedy, and, of course, Hoppy's famous laugh. Old Westerns just don't get better than this. The quality of these DVDs is quite good. You may have to re-set the disk to mono sound to enhance quality, but once you do it is great. The picture quality looks like the movie was shot yesterday. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning watching Hoppy catch the crooks.

3 out of 5 stars Hoppy Cleans Up the Town.......2002-07-11

He dresses all in black. He struts around with 2 pearl-handled Colt pistols. He doesn't drink. His horse can make breakfast. He's Hopalong Cassidy. 1935's hit "Hopalong Cassidy Enters" sparked the magic formula for veteran actor William Boyd and his long-running movie and television franchise. This double-feature DVD starts with 1936's "Three on the Trail", co-starring George "Gabby" Hayes and one-time Broadway star Onslow Stevens as the corrupt saloon owner Pecos Kane. Stevens had an interesting Hollywood career. In 1932, he started in films as a leading man. He slipped to character parts, and became famous as mad Dr. Edleman in 1945's "House of Dracula". In later years, his career was adversely affected by alcohol. It is reported that his death in a convalescent home in 1977 was attributed to murder. The second movie, "Hopalong Cassidy Returns" is an exciting shoot-em-up. Villian Blackie Felton drags a wheelchaired cripple through town to his violent death. Hoppy swears revenge. Blackie is played by Stephen Morris, who once worked for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. Later, he changed his name to Morris Ankrum, and appeared(often uncredited) in over 170 motion pictures. In the 1950's, Ankrum turned up consistently in low-budget monster movies. These 2 superior Cassidy episodes were filmed in the Alabama Hills, in Lone Pine, Cal., around Mt. Whitney, 400 miles north of Los Angeles. Other locations included Red Rock Canyon in the High Sierra Mountains. The DVD elements have been spruced up with digital audio and visual restoration. There's some sound drop-out, but the picture quality is amazing for 1936. William Boyd continued his very successful Hoppy films into the 1950's, ending with a TV series. He retired, but continued making live appearances for his legions of adoring young fans; almost up until his demise in 1972.

5 out of 5 stars "round-up time at the Bar-20...you're dern tootin'".......2001-10-16

Once again our silver-haired hero in black Hop-A-Long Cassidy, with the help of Johnny Nelson (Jimmy Ellison) and Windy Halliday (George "Gabby" Hayes), Hoppy's two trail wranglers try to feed hungry settlers during the great depression in Plainsville...Hoppy goes up against some tough polecats (Morris Ankrum) and it spells trouble...strong storyline with fast-paced action and a beautiful backdrop of Lone Pine, California...gives this film the wide open spaces with breathtaking moments.

William Boyd (Hoppy), ranked high on the list of "Western Roundup" heroes, riding his white steed Topper, with blazing pearl-handled
