Long awaited .......2007-06-27
I have been waiting for this series on dvd now that I have them my expectations of it have never changed.
more please.......2007-06-12
This is a great show. Its been almost a year, could someone please tell me when box set 7 will be released?I loved this show as a child and have all 6 sets so far.It has everything todays television doesn't.It is timeless great western entertainment.
The Rifleman reigns supreme!.......2006-05-22
Clearly, Amazon has gotten their wires crossed and placed a review for a film called "And Now the Screaming Starts!" in place of the one for volume six of the Rifleman boxed set collections. While "And Now the Screaming Starts!" sounds quite interesting and has a dire plot, I'm sure ol' Lucas McCain could have settled that situation in 22 minutes flat, and provided a moral lesson out of it to boot.
UPDATE: It's been fixed. Now all is right on the homestead. Thanks, Amazon. "The Rifleman" remains one of the coolest westerns ever, and hopefully this confusion didn't keep any casual browsers from discovering a classic show!

LEFT or RIGHT HANDED ?.......2007-04-16
The DVD box depicts The Riffleman as righthanded, me thinks not!!
Chuck was left handed.
Despite that I enjoyed seeing this western again.
Four stars for the product, five stars for the show - "A Four-Star Television Production").......2006-08-07
Putting it shortly and simply, there is no need to review the show, one of the best western TV shows ever. If you are over 45 or so and you don't know the show, you must have been living in a cave or in some third-world country, and even in those countries, everyone has a TV and you can probably still get the show in syndication.
The production company was Four-Star Productions, but I would give the product here only three stars, simply because I want the original show in its entirety - the original opening credits and the original closing credits, and everything in between, for each and every episode, season-by-season in episode order. There has yet to be a season-by-season DVD release of the original episodes of "The Rifleman", just repackaged stuff like this. This is true for another great western series, "Bonanza." I also hope those are released one day in their original form instead of in the bastardized collections currently available.
The Rifleman is all man!.......2006-07-25
This series varies a bit, some episodes are slow and the music gets really hokey sometimes but there are other episodes that are extremely good. There are plenty of scenes with Lucas just acting like an all out man! such as chopping wood in the field shirtless, waking up early because it bothers him that his aim isn't quite right, or decling he'll drink with who he wants- when he wants . There's no way they'd show such out and out masculinity nowadays. Us guys need to go back to the 1950s and 1960s when it was okay to show men acting like real men (in comparison to the nonsense they're showing nowadays). Even in scenes with Lucas relaxing at the end of the day, teaching Mark another life lesson, his jaw set tight-this Rifleman's features seem to be chiseled from solid stone! Grasshopper from this collection is classic and truly excellent. Please release the remainder of the series!
Top Quality Western.......2006-04-30
The Rifleman is among the top two or three superior classic TV Westerns from the early days of TV when Westerns were competing with each other at a frantic pace. The stories and acting on The Rifleman are outstanding.
A question to trivia experts: am I remembering correctly that the introductory scenes varied from season to season? MPI seems to have edited in the first season introduction to all season episodes.

Only Western I liked.......2006-04-29
The Rifleman was always a great show to watch. So far, I've enjoyed all of the boxed sets that I've bought. I don't usually watch westerns, but this became one of my favorite shows.
Ahead of its time.......2006-02-19
We know that the Western story is a part of our culture. Like Star Trek that was more about the " last frontier" inside , our predjudices and fears, than going into space, The Rifleman is more than just a story about a rancher in New Mexico in the late 19th century who can shoot a rifle faster and more accurately than a man with a " six gun". The Rifleman was ahead of its time. It is also the store a single parent. The more interesting part is that the parent is a Father. The chemistry between Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford makes this show a must for anyone who likes the Western and the close relationship that the parent and child share. The show is great and can be watched over and over. Take a chance and get the dvd especially if you have never seen it before. It's entertaining.
Nostalgia.......2005-07-27
I found the quality of the DVD's was good but the content was not that great. I guess we have to look back to the success of the original show before deciding to add these programs to our collections.

Great.......2006-03-22
I have loved The Rifleman since I watched it as a kid. And now to get it on DVD is great. Anyone who likes Westerns and especially with the added dimension that this is about a man who is a single parent it makes for good TV.
re-live fond memories.......2006-03-15
So grateful and excited to see this series brought to DVD! I purchased this set for my father: to re-live fond memories of watching this series as a family. I agree with the other reviews: I enjoy the wholesome "morals woven into the plot" and this is truly "a classic series that deserves season by season release."
classic series that deserves season by season release.......2005-08-05
Just like the review by "RLM", my wife too, is the one that often suggests we watch a episode of the Rifleman--and she's native to Puerto Rico, never saw the series before and generally doesn't care for the Western genre! That's the beauty of this series, though, in that in transcends the genre it's set in, offering up enduring stories involving redemption, hope, fortitude and resilience, focusion on a widower (Lucas McCain) and the son (Mark) he cherishes so much. Show me just one positive role model for young boys on a par with Lucas McCain in today's shows--there aren't any! I grew up with this series and now watch it for the great family entertainment it is with my wife and 4 year old boy--such a timeless show indeed.
While I'm happy that MPI has resurrected the series with the release of box sets 3-4 after a long hiatus following the release of the first two sets, I wish they had chosen to release the series on a season by season basis, as most fans desire. The problem is that they tested the waters by releasing sporadic episodes with name stars, found that the classic tv on dvd market is for real, and have been put into the positon of attempting to release the remaining episodes as sequentially as possible. Half of the episodes have now been released (80 of 164) and MPI has at least been a bit more careful about maintaining some consistency with the episode vintage--unlike the first box set, which saw episodes jumping all over the place. Episodes here are primarily from seasons 1 and 2, arguably the best. Picture quality and sound is excellent, generally free of blemishes, scratches, etc. Box set three had a few episodes which were a bit ruddy with low contrast, but my fears were put to rest once I viewed the remainder of that set and set 4.
Because it took so long to see the continuance of 'The Rifleman' on DVD after the initial two box sets, MPI has introduced superior, more compact packaging. However, what annoys me is that formerly on the menu selection (sets 1-2), one was able to see a brief synopsis of the episode before playing it--that option does not exist in the latter releases. Also, there used to be chapters you could skip to within the episode (4-5, I believe), now one has to scan the entire segment. The one improvement was in dropping the rifle shot sound ("BANG"!!) when an episode is selected.
4 stars rather than 5 for lack of extras and for not releasing the series in season order.
One of the best shows ever on TV.......2005-07-10
This is more a review of the series in general. I've gotten all 4 sets so far and am eagerly awaiting the 5th. These episodes have all been well preserved. The picture and sound are much better than some other series from the same era that have been released. My wife was never much of a western fan or a Chuck Connors fan, but she's gotten to where she's the one suggesting we watch these DVD's instead of what's on TV. Paraphrasing her own words, "let's watch the rifleman its better than anything else on, at least he's teaching his son morals and values instead of how to get a girl in bed." Morals and values are what's missing from TV today and, unfortunately, they are dissappearing from our society as well. I'm not blaming all of society's downward spiral on TV and Hollywood, but the fact that there are few shows like The Rifleman, The Lone Ranger, and others, that actually have a moral woven into the plot made anymore sure has been a contributing factor.

Great Shows!.......2007-01-12
My husband and I talk often about the old western shows we watched when we were kids. It was real good to watch this CD. We received it on time and the the CD is clear and easy to watch.
Great Western TV Shows Review.......2006-08-06
I understand that these are very old shows and, no doubt, were not preserved well, but I think that this should be pointed out in your advertising. It is disappointing when you expect the same quality that you remember and the picture is distorted, faded (almost bleached) and has poor sound. If this is acknowledged first, it would minimize the quality expectations. Old fans would still purchase the product.

James F.........2006-07-22
Wow...Excellent Quality and content.. I truely enjoyed this. I one have given it a 5 star rating if it had included, Lawman, Yancy Deringer, Colt 45 or Wanted Dead or Alive...
It did however include Sugarfoot, Jim Bowie, Kit Carson and Annie Oakley which I haven't seen in years.. Secondly how can you beat good old black & white television. If you were born circa 1953 as I was this is a "MUST"... I showed this to my father who was born in 1924 and I have never seen him happier...
some great western shows from yesteryear, bcieclipise does it again.......2006-04-20
if you have read any of my reviews you know i love westerns, and you should know that i really like this great collection of some of t.v. early westerns.
bcieclipise is a company that i have come to like very much. they started this trend of putting movies and shows into a 5 or 10 disc set. most of their sets are very good and have nice if not great transfers.
this set of old t.v. westerns is a fine cross section of some old westerns, some i had never heard of, but all of them are pretty good. i don't have a break down of all the shows for you but if you like westerns like me i think this is one collection you may want to have.they are all kid friendly and my boys watch these old shows with me and we have a ball. that alone puts this set high on my list of dvd's to have.
Memories.......2006-03-09
I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the TV westerns I remember growing up in the 50's and 60's. The quality was excellent. Great job!
Thanks, Bill Clifford

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as the other reviewers said!.......2004-11-18
I don't know why the other reviews rated this disc so highly. The package may say it is digitally MASTERED but it is NOT digitally REmastered! There was no restoration work done on this disc whatsoever, and it shows. The quality is barely passable, and probably was dubbed off older vhs tapes. I think the other reviewers were just so ecstatic that these episodes were even available on DVD that their judgement got the best of them. In summary, if you can find this disc for a couple of bucks go for it, otherwise, you'd be better off getting the Rifleman and Wagon Train on other DVD editions.
bonanza.......2004-09-30
jamerais qu'il sois en français car je l'acheterais Si il a une personne qu'il les a en français me le faire savoir mercie.
Wagons Ho !.......2001-11-07
During the 1950's these three shows became a family must see. For a whole generation of us born in the 40's and 50's this is a nostalgic trip back to a more innocent time. The quality of these recordings is excellent, keeping them in black and white is true to their time. Anyone wishing to revisit Rowdy Yates, Chuck Conner or Ward Bond will find these invaluable. It is amazing too see how simple the plots and the parts were, relying instead on our connection to the actors character. You won't want to miss it.
FOUR WESTERN CLASSICS INTO ONE.......2001-06-21
I must tell you I thought I was getting only one episode on "The Wagon Train" and another one on the "Death Valley Days". To my delightful surprise, that is a double sided DVD and brings you not only two of the best tv classic westerns ever made, but four tv classic westerns: "Death Valley Days" ("Dear Teacher" & "Sego Lillies"); "Wagon Train" ("The Dr. Denker Story"); "Bat Masterson" ("The Fighter" & "Stampede at Tent City") and "The Rifleman" ("Outlaw's Inheritance" & "Mail Order Groom"). Without a doubt, that is one of the best DVDs in my modest, but selected collection. It comes in a very nice case with short, but great information on the shows. It has an interactive menu, scene selector, dolby digital, trivia quiz and biography of the famous stars of the classic western shows in it. It was digitally mastered and was made in Canada. The 7 (seven) episodes on the DVD were nicely and competently chosen among the various good episodes on the shows. If you are a tv western classic fanatic like me or even if you want to have a really good DVD just added to your collection, that is a must!

For casual fans of "The Rifleman".......2005-10-27
This three episode collection issued by Alpha Video contains the same three episodes that have been issued by various companies specializing in public domain material; in fact, if you already own any DVDs of the Chuck Connors Western "The Rifleman," be sure to compare the episodes on your discs with those contained on Alpha's so as to avoid possible duplication. The episodes include "Outlaw's Inheritance," "Day of the Hunter," and "Mail Order Groom." For casual fans of the series who would like to include a few episodes in their classic TV collection, this DVD will fit the bill nicely. But serious fans of "The Rifleman" will want to check out the various official DVD box sets issued by MPI for the best episode selection and best audio/visual quality.
Trivia Note: John Anderson guest stars in two of the episodes, "Day of the Hunter" and "Mail Order Groom." These two episodes were originally broadcast just a week apart!
