5 out of 5 stars Hoppy does it again!.......2007-05-16

What's not to like with five Hoppy movies? Although one of the five has some transfer problems, the joy of watching square-shootin', rootin'-tootin' Hoppy and his Bar-20 companions take on the bad guys is truly a fun way to spend some hours. Any western movie aficionado will love these films. Looking forward to collecting all the sets in their glorious black-and-white Lone Pine settings. William Boyd remains one of the definitive cowboys of the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Good stories!.......2007-02-07

Good quality so far. I like the early movies with Gabby Hayes the best, but these are really quite entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars How did they do that????.......2007-01-30

The quality is so good that you will think you are watching brand new prints in the best theater on Main Street in the 1940s. Actually it's probably better than that. The intro says these digital re-masters were done by a company named "US Television Office, Inc.". For goodness sake, every person or studio who has old prints TAKE THEM TO "US TELEVISION OFFICE, INC." AND GET THEM RE-MASTERED. Platinum has released 8 volumes of these Hoppy feature films and I own all 8. But for some strange reason, probably only known to some "power lunch" executive, they did not number the volumes...so you will just have to tell the difference by the numbers Amazon gives them. They are worth twice or 3 times the price. There were 66 Hopalong Cassidy films made starring William Boyd, and you can own 40 of them with these 8 volumes at a slim price.

4 out of 5 stars Hoppy's guns blaze across the screen in vol 3.......2005-07-12

Once again Hopalong Cassidy rides across the screen guns a blazing. If you want to go back to your early days when movies were a treat get this collection of Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd)movies. "In Old California" is a classic in which Hoppy comes to the rescue of a friend of Hoppy's boss. It is full of action, suspense, and any movie with California Carlson is always a belly laugh that we all need from time to time.

These movies are perfect for the parent concerned with what their children watch on TV. They are full of examples supplied by Hoppy, California, and Lucky showing how to live without drinking alcohol, smoking, or use of bad language. They never harm or show disrespect to women, and are a great visual example of how to be an adult, for all kids to see and admire.

5 out of 5 stars "three boys from the Bar 20 ride the range ~ Hoppy".......2005-04-29

One of the most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures "Hopalong Cassidy", under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and a man of his word...the plots were solid with a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension building music...the Hoppy series produced by Harry "Pop" Sherman is arguably the best "B" western series ever made...its production values were miles above any other and they always had the look and feel of more expensive "A" features...their beautiful outdoor location photography is exceptional for a "B" product.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitchrack, was chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite ~ "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes even William Boyd.

In this Volume Three we have five films of the following:

IN OLD COLORADO (1941-B&W-66 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Margaret Hayes (Myra Woods), Morris Ankrum (Joe Weiler), Sarah Padden (Harriet Ma Woods), Stanley Andrews (George Davidson), Cliff Nazarro (Nosey Haskins), Eddy Waller (Jim Stark)

Ma Woods sends for the Bar 20 boys and Buck Peters agrees to purchase her cattle to pay off some past notes...along the way Hoppy is robbed of the money for the cattle with the finger pointing at George Davidson...Hoppy's instincts tell him someone else is behind all this cattle rustling...after patching up the feud between Ma Wood and Davidson the real identity of the ring leader is about to be sprung...a big shoot out of all B-Westerns, having every member of the Paramount lot that could carry a gun in the final scene...once again Hoppy and the Bar 20 boys bring harmony and peace to the valley in Old Colorado!

LEATHER BURNERS (1942-B&W-58 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Jay Kirby (Johnny Travers), Victor Jory (Dan Slack), George Reeves (Harrison Brooke), Hal Taliaferro (Lafe), George Givot (Sam Bucktoe), Ellanora Needles (Sharon Longstreet)

Rustled cattle is he plot of this Hoppy Adventure...Johnny Travers (Kirby) sends for his old pal and foreman of the Bar 20 to help find the mysteriously vanishing cattle...Hoppy's keen senses immediately suspect Dan Slack (Jory) and he is in cahoots with Sam Bucktoe (Givot) who uses his mine to keep stolen cattle...is this case to tough for Hoppy...can he clear himself of a murder charge...will our hero in black find out the truth and put things right...don't go away we're about to go into action and burn some leather!

STAGECOACH WAR (1940-B&W-63 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Britt Wood (Speedy), Julie Carter (Shirley Chapman), Harvey Stephens (Neal Holt), J. Farrell McDonald (Jeff Chapman), Eddy Waller (Wells Fargo Agent Quince), Eddie Dean (Tom the henchman)

Two longtime enemies are bidding on a mail contract via stage line...Hoppy, Lucky and Speedy of the Bar 20 a bringing a her of horses for Jeff Chapman...the love interest is between Neal Holt and Shirley Chapman...Holt is the other interested party on the mail carrying contract now held by old man Chapman...a race is initiated between the two rivals, whoever wins the race will have the mail contract...is there devilment afoot during the race...can Lucky bring himself to ease up on the reins as Shirley's life is in peril...are the two Holt and Chapman going to be at odds forever...well, buckaroos Hoppy just won't stand by and let a stagecoach war happen!

SINISTER JOURNEY (1948-B&W-60 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Andy Clyde (California Jack Carlson), Rand Brooks (Lucky Jenkins), Elaine Riley (Jessie Garvin), John Kellogg (Lee Garvin), Don Haggerty (Harmon Roberts), Stanley Andrews (Tom Smith)

Railroad executive Tom Smith is having trouble and sends for Cassidy...his daughter eloped with Lee Garvin and he didn't approve of his daughters choice...Garvin is framed for the murder of Smith...will Hoppy be able to prove Garvin's innocence...does he have a plan to bring the guilty hombre to justice...Hoppy sees things a little more clearly than most...so don't fret Hoppy's on the case of the sinister journey...all will not go well for the villians in this picture!

THE SHOWDOWN (1940-B&W-65 mins)
Boyd (Hoppy), Russell Hayden (Lucky Jenkins), Britt Wood (Speed McGinnis), Morris Ankrum (Baron Rendor), Jan Clayton (Sue Willard), Wright Kramer (Col. Rufe White), Roy Barcroft (Bowman), Eddie Dean (Marshall), Kermit Maynard (Johnson)

An imposter posing as a Baron is the storyline...Baron Rendor (Ankrum) is planning to steal some fine race horses...Hoppy and the Bar 20 comrades arrive just in time to expose the horse thieves...the Baron prides himself as an excellent poker player and challenges Hoppy in a friendly game...Hoppy marks his bills and beats the Baron to win at poker hoping to flush him out into the open...Hoppy is robbed on the trail and the money reappears in a horse trading deal...Hoppy has him dead to rights...and Lucky as usual falls for the pretty Sue Willard (Jan Clayton)...Hoppy gets ready to leave and Lucky is trying to make up his mind about whether to stay or go with Hoppy...what do you think...is there another adventure in store or is this the real showdown!

Hoppy's interaction with Windy Halliday (George Hayes) and California Carlson (Andy Clyde) was always a shot in the arm with their down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, theses scenes are pure Americana! Boyd, with his silver hair, black clothes and white horse (Topper) rode into our lives and we've never been the same since...your children and grandchildren will enjoy this clean wholesome entertainment...Hoppy always wore two silver white handle six shooters, never drank or smoked, when the good guys always won and the moral to the story was fair-play...outstanding role model...gotta love it!

Another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films...a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Andy Clyde (California Carlson) for comedy, left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

William Boyd was my hero, this collection of five films are perfect, clear and give me hope for the future. Our youth should have such a hero to look up to today. Must mention the fact that I still miss one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks though, George "Gabby" Hayes, you're durn tootin'!

Paramount and Clarence E. Mulford's fictional western character Hopalong Cassidy comes to life through William Boyd as Hoppy and Andy Clyde as California with films from the '40s...horse operas directed by Lesley Selander and George Archainbaud...some of the best hard riding and smokin' gunplay that ever came across the big screen from the Bar 20 boys...just the way we like 'em.

I have two other DVDs of the Lone Ranger, and this one has two episodes that I had not seen. There is no better western than this series. The respect that is shown to women, the dignity of Jay Silverheels, and the moral high quality of dialog is not to be equalled. You cannot find simple stories with good moral principles with this level of acting, and the intelligent dialog. A must for all ages

5 out of 5 stars Day of Anger.......2007-06-15

Good dvd, for every spagetti western lovers, need to get this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Captain Apache was more enjoyable...........2007-05-21

Being a huge LVC fan, I was excited to come across this title. Great artwork - too bad the movie doesn't live up to the exciting poster art. The only thing this flick has going for it besides LVC and the poster art is the outstanding score by Riz Ortalini. One of the most awesome non-Morricone spaghetti western scores ever.

I would rate this one even with Beyond the Law, another lesser LVC effort that also has TV quality sets and acting. Even the action was minimal. The storyline was similar to but not done nearly as well as Death Rides A Horse.

For the best of LVC, I would recommend (in order)The Big Gundown, Death Rides a Horse, The Grand Duel, El Condor and even Captain Apache before I would recommend Day of Anger. Way overrated and WAAAAAAY overpriced. WildEast should be ashamed of themselves trying to get thirty dollars for this disc.

Save your bucks on this DVD and just get the soundtrack CD of the score while it is still in print. Believe me, you'll get way more miles outta the CD than you will this DVD...

5 out of 5 stars I Own All Wildeast DVD's And Never Had Any Problems!.......2007-04-26

When I first heard about this "Spaghetti" I was mildly intrigued. Then I found out the DVD was "rare" and I was curious. Then I saw the pricetag and said "fahgetaboutit!" And then I broke down and bought it. Not only does it live up to the hype, it was totally worth the price of admission!

1 out of 5 stars A warning about Wild East Entertainment.......2006-09-17

I am a Spaghetti Western fan. Because of this I decided to purchase a number of rather rare films on DVD by Wild East Entertainment. One of thes films is the classic Lee Van Cleef western Day of Anger.

The first DVD I recieved of Day of Anger had some major problems. I ordered the disc BRAND NEW from amazon directly and the disc contained many DEEP scratches, fingerprint smudges, and the center of the disc was even cracked. I sent the disc back to get a replacement. The second disc I recieved was also scratched badly. I'm not sure who is in charge of making these Wild Eest Entertainment discs but holy hell, give me a break! For brand new discs they look and play like a an ex-rental that had been used as a frisbee. I sent the disc back for a second time because the film skipped. The third disc I recieved...what a surprise...was also really scratched. Enough is enough! How many times do I have to send a disc back in order to get a disc that is in LIKE NEW condition and plays fine!

This is not the only problem i had with Wild East DVDs I ordered. I also ordered the DVDs Santara and Gentleman Killer. I will say up front that I have a normal television (not some fancy widescreen TV) and a normal high quality Sony DVD player. When I played either one of those DVDs...the image come up scruntched on my TV. It's not like I have a widescreen TV playing non-anamorphic discs. I have a normal everyday TV. I emailed Wild East Entertainment about the problem and they eventually responded that it was a manufacturing defect on their part and the person has to switch their DVD player manually to 16x9 to play properly on their TV. Sadly I was unable to do this on my DVD player and the company offered my money back if I sent back the discs along with my amazon receipt. I sent the DVD to them. It's been months and I have not recieved any refund and they refuse to email me back. They took my DVDs and never sent me a refund and refuse to answer my letters and emails. I have NEVER been treated so poorly and they basically robbed me of $40.

The "Taste of Killing" DVD also has some video glitches but I assume I warned potential buyers enough about "Wild East Entertainment". I respect the work they are trying to do by releasing hard to find Spaghetti Westerns but they need to shape up or ship out. Releasing defective discs that are poorly manufactured (like the Day of Anger disc) is upsetting. Their customer service promising refunds that never arrive and ignoring emails and letters is childish. It's a shame because I bought a LOT of their DVD's but the defective discs and their customer service giving false promises ensures that I will NEVER buy another one of their products again.

4 out of 5 stars days of wrath.......2006-07-07

this is a fantastic film staring lee van cleef and guiliano gemma. it is on many spaghetti western top 10 lists. the directer tonnino valleri was sergio leones assistant directer and later valleri directed a film produced by leone called "my name is nobody" that is also wonderful film.in "days of anger" lee van cleef(talby)takes gemma(scott mary) under his wing and teaches him how to be a gunfighter. i hate to tell any more i have had reveiws ruin movies for me before. i guess all i have to say if you like westerns and lee van cleef and have not seen this film buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Old favorite returns.......2007-01-10

We watched these old shows when our older kids were young and were thrilled to find them on DVD for our younger guys.

5 out of 5 stars The fabulous precursor to Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman.......2006-12-20

Long before DQMW there was Bordertown, a half hour weekly western drama on the Family Channel. It ran for three seasons from 1989-1991, and was the Family Channel's highest rated original show. It was cancelled not due to ratings, but due to high production costs. 78 episodes were filmed. For some reason, this wonderful family drama has not been released on DVD in seasoned boxed sets. We only get 2 episodes from Season 1 and all of Season 3 (26 episodes.)

There is a difference between the boxed set and the four single volumes that were released. The boxed set has been digitally remastered. If you do not care about remastering, get the four individual volumes.

          BORDERTOWN SUMMARY

Pemmican was a town in the western plains of North America near the 49th parallel (49° north latitude). It took until 1880 until the border was surveyed in the area of Pemmican, at which time it was found that the town straddled the border. In fact, the border goes through the local law enforcement office. In order to have proper and legal law enforcement, both Clive Bennett (John H. Brennan) and Jack Craddock (Richard Comar) have been stationed in the town. Clive is a colonel in the North West Mounted Police, and was formerly stationed in Toronto. Jack is a U.S. Marshal and a former Texas Ranger.

Each of these law officers is courting the fancy of Marie Dumont (Sophie Barjac). Marie and her husband (Jacque), both from Paris, lived in Bordertown until he died leaving Marie a widow. Marie is also the town's doctor and proprietor of the local general store. Marie has adopted Lucy, a girl whose parents have died.

          5 out of 5 stars Bordertown.......2005-08-16

I never recieved this item even though I ordered it and payed for it.

5 out of 5 stars still great after all these years.......2005-03-26

I was a big fan of Bordertown when it showed on the Family Channel back in the early 90's. It is so good to see these episodes again, especially since it was a series that didn't depict graphic sexuality or extreme violence as is the so common theme with TV shows today. The DVD is pretty basic, no extras, very enjoyable without the commercial breaks as was on TV. Video quality is good but perhaps not on par with today's high definition, episode length is about 24 minutes. I hope that the entire series will soon become available on DVD. With Volumes 1 through 4 now available, this makes for about 28 of the 90 or so total shows in the series good-to-go. For those who want a good series that can be watched with the kids, or the "I Love Lucy" and "Oz and Harriet" generation - this is it.

          5 out of 5 stars What's on this DVD?.......2005-02-23

            Description

This special collection includes: Back In The Saddle; Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride; Rancho Grande and Melody Ranch

Back In The Saddle: Dust off your best cowboy hat and polish up your spurs as America's first and favorite singing cowboy gallops across the silver screen into your living room. Gene Autry, star of radio, records, film, TV and rodeo, invented the musical Western, capturing America's hearts as a guitar-slinging, song-singing, six gun-toting good guy. Riding Champion, the World's Wonder Horse, Autry became a beloved American hero whose popularity remains strong today. Now, for the first time on DVD, Gene Autry's rollicking big screen adventures and unforgettable tunes are brought home in these Western classics fully restored and uncut from Autry's personal film archives. When pollution from a nearby copper mine poisons hundreds of cattle, two-fisted ranch foreman Autry faces a heap of trouble from all sides. Features Gene's signature song and his lovable sidekick, Smiley Burnette.

Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride:Cowboy Gene Autry inherits the Belmont Packing Company and the management duties that come with it. When a rival company owned by a pretty socialite plots to force Gene to sell, a feud soon ensues between the lady, who uses her womanly wiles to take business from Gene, and the cowboy who tries to recover by using old-time rally methods, including parades and bands.

Rancho Grande: Gene Autry is the foreman of a ranch mortgaged to the hilt with a fast approaching deadline to build a dam. When the owner dies and leaves the Rancho Grande to his three madcap grandchildren, Gene must straighten out the rebellious young folks and make them work to pay off the debt and foil the villains. It will take brawn, brains, and of course a few songs, to uncover the secret plot to take over Rancho Grande.

Melody Ranch:Lawlessness runs rampant in Gene's hometown of Torpedo until the movie and radio cowboy returns as Honorary Sheriff for a Frontier Days celebration and cleans up the town! Featuring Jimmy Durante, Ann Miller, and such classics like "We Never Dream the Same Dream Twice" and the title song, this musical was Gene's biggest theatrical production upon its release and remains one of his best-remembered big screen journeys!
