1 out of 5 stars 20th century fox Ought to Be Ashamed Of Itself "DONT BUY LAND OF THE GIANTS SET".......2007-07-07

I now have in my collection over 4000 dvd,s including sets,I own The Voyage To The bottom Of The Sea Sets,Lost In Space Sets and Time Tunnel Sets all Irwin Allen product, all these sets were priced right so people including myself bought them.I just saw the price for the Land Of The Giants set and its a disgrace I will not buy this set and am thinking about boycotting any of Fox,s product in the future.Fox does not even put out their product in a proper way they make the discs with material on both sides which is the cheap way to do it as when you lift the discs they end up getting finger prints and scratches on them all of which deteriorate the products future use. Studios like image do things the right way they produce the product on one side with label on the other,fOX ON THE OTHER HAND uses the cheap way to produce discs and ends up charging a fortune. This has nothing to do with Amazon which i love, but I,m asking everyone out there even though you like the series as I do DONT BUY this set, hopefully when 20th century fox sees its not selling they will do what they should have done in the first place by selling it in season sets at like 24.00 to 29.00.All consumers should write 20th century as I have and tell them you want single sided discs in TV Show Sets also for the future not A and B side discs.

to much to pay i will wait and it will come up cheaper in a year or so heck been waiting for 39 years for a dvd copy i can wait some more.

3 out of 5 stars PAYING FOR NOSTALGIA.......2007-07-02

I agree with some of the commentaries above regarding this over the top and beyond price. I counted myself among those die-hards cult fans but this is really going too far. What many people are paying for this is not only so much a series as a return to our childhood. Much cheaper to look at other Irwin Allen's - and much better series - such as Voyage to the bottom of the Sea for that matter. Enrique Terol (Spain).

3 out of 5 stars Price Is Steep.......2007-06-25

Considering you can get every James Bond movie - remastered - for the same price, well it does seem pretty high.

5 out of 5 stars I'll Pay That!.......2007-06-21

I can't wait for this box set to come out! Have you all looked at what cool packaging it comes in, not to mention all the other features and gifts that come along with it! For those of you who don't want to fork out for a great piece of classic TV memorabilia instead of bitching about the price why don't you just download the episodes for $1.99 each, that makes getting the entire series only about $50...
Problem solved! As for me, even though I will be paying in Australian dollars which will hike the price up even higher I'll definitely pay that.

5 out of 5 stars Chomper Double Feaure.......2006-02-17

This is a great movie to add to your collection. Mysterious Island made me feel sad, but I got over it. I liked the stupid things Ozzy and Strut did such as leaping off a cliff because they see a sharptooth's shadow, or even trying to steal an egg and accidentally biting into a rock.

I really emjoy this movie, I hope you do to.

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2005-03-04

This is one of my favorite Land Before Time movies. The only part i don't like about it is those egg stealers especially Ozzy.
But the rest of it is cute.

Description

Charles Bronson (The Magnificent Seven) and Academy Award(r) winner* Jack Palance (City Slickers) star in a magnificent western as wild and untamed as the Old West itself. Bristling with dynamic action sequences and riveting performances, Chato's Land is a bold, sweeping tale of passion, vengeance and cold-blooded murder. Chato (Bronson) is a half-breed Apache Indian who treads the line between two cultures, balancing allegiance to his tribe with the allure of the white man's world. But when Chato kills a vicious sheriff in self-defense, he finds himselfhunted by a posse led by the ruthless Quincey Whitmore (Palance), a former Confederate soldier who is determined to see him hang. It's 13 men against one, but the odds shift in Chato's favor when he leads his pursuers into Apache territory, where the harsh, cruel countryside can kill as surely as agunman's bullet. *1991: Supporting Actor, City Slickers

3 out of 5 stars Excellent movie, but there's only one problem with this.......2007-03-25

I love this movie. This is a classic Charles Bronson movie. So I was happy when I bought this DVD. But I was a little disappointed upon watching it. Not wanting to spoil anything, so I'll stay vague. At some point in the movie, one woman is assaulted. In the original movie that I remember seeing in a theatre in the 70's, the scene was rather graphic, her clothes being ripped off her, resulting in a short nudity scene. But not here on this DVD. For some strange reason, the scene is still there but not the same. Apparently the film maker shot it twice. Once with full nudity, and once where she still gets assaulted the same way, but keeps her clothes on. We get this censored version on this DVD. It's no big deal since the scene was pretty short. But I still don't like getting a modified version from what I remember. I'm surprised no one pointed that out in the previous reviews. No one has seen this movie in the theatre when it came out? I still recommend it as it's a great movie if you look beyond this fact.

4 out of 5 stars "A hard land that the sun has sucked all the good out of".......2006-12-31

Make no mistake; "Chato's Land" is a sprawling, unforgiving environment that offers little water and no reward. The blistering, sprawling landscape of rock and sagebrush, however, is but a backdrop in this story that shows man at his most ugly of moments.

Charles Bronson stars as Pardon Chato, a half Apache Indian who is enjoying a drink in a saloon when he is antagonized by an arrogant sheriff. Chato goes against the sheriff's wishes to leave because of his heritage, and lets his actions speak for themselves, leaving the mouthy lawman dead on the floorboards. A posse is soon rounded up with a variety of area men, many of them farmers and ranchers. They embark on a trip to find Chato and avenge the death in town, as well as feed some of their own continual hatred towards the Indians in general. Greed, Hate and Perseverance battle Logic, Pride and Tolerance as the group soon start battling each other over what they think is right and wrong when it comes to avenging the death of the lawman.

A great western film from 1971, Chato's land offers a solid and stoic storyline that is wrought with irony as well as themes of loyalty and revenge. Charles Bronson aside, a superb supporting cast is experienced as well. Victor French (later of "Little House" and "Highway to Heaven" stardom) graces the screen as one of the posse members, and with Jack Palance and James Whitmore in tow, its a well rounded cast that never lacks quality in acting despite a somewhat linear storyline.

Palance plays the part of Quincy Whitmore, a war veteran who understands, and sometimes even respects the Apache's actions more than most. His arch-nemesis is Jubal Hooker (played by Simon Oakland) who has the "fever" of wanting to see the Apache man hang, even if it costs them lives which could end up coming down to the last man. Jubal is excellently played by Oakland as a man who is consumed with his own destiny of vengeance. Loyalties loved and lost, a large part of the movie is very emotional in power and prestige as we experience the dismay of the men as they deal with the battles that rage within their very own camp, and minds.

With Bronson portraying a cunning, intelligent and yes even ruthless Apache warrior, Chato's Land is a western that is filled with buzzards drinking blood, the dark side of man, and the notion that if you go to battle with someone in their own back yard, you better think twice about who has the best odds, regardless of how many men you bring with you.

The scenic landscape and the shots taken at night as well as during the scorching hot days are excellent, and the sound quality of this DVD in my opinion is very good if not perfect. If you want a western that gets dirty but portrays a deep story within, see "Chato's Land".

2 out of 5 stars Feedback from Real Apache "Calculus Wiz".......2006-05-11

I saw a few scenes and couldn't even continue watching. I like a lot of Charles Bronson's movies. Examples include "Death Hunt," the 80s "Death Wish" series, and "the White Buffalo." But his acting in this movie is unrealistic. He does not act like a real Apache. Bronson seems to overdo it on being "stoic." A relative and I watched a few scenes and just switched channels. Bronson is out of his element in trying to portray a real Apache. Paul Newman does a much more realistic job when he portrays an Apache-raised white man in "Hombre," which I purchased on Amazon. I do applaud Bronson in trying to portray a movie more sympathetic to the plight of the Apaches trying to avoid reservation confinement in the 1880s. Given the time period, perhaps Bronson should have hired Roman Gabriel instead. He does a realistic job of portraying a Cherokee Indian in the "Undefeated," which was also released around the same time (give or take a couple of years).

5 out of 5 stars A Subtle yet Powerful Western.......2006-03-23

Michael Winner's CHATO'S LAND may seem a bit below standard from other films that he directed but the strength in this film comes from Charles Bronson's stoic performance seen and unseen on the screen. Bronson's presence is there and is inescapable as is the baron land he habitats. The visual forsaken look of the film's characters and landscape makes the viewer wonder what the point of this whole film is. Whatever Bronson's transgressions may really have been the forlorn posse tracking him are representative of the worst qualities of society. I saw this film when first released but with time I see the deeper social implications and commentary on society that director Michael Winner was making. This is a good Western but may be a difficult one to appreciate on an initial viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Chato's Land DVD.......2005-09-16

Excellent film if you think the indians were grossly mistreated by us, and I do. Here they got some much deserved revenge, and justice.

This 1994 update on the Lassie legend stars Thomas Guiry as a troubled city kid whose family retreats to the country, where he befriends the famous collie and changes for the better. Conflict develops when a ruthless sheep rancher causes trouble for everyone. Director Daniel Petrie (The Bay Boy) aims only to revive the healthy spirit of previous Lassie films (and the television series) in a new milieu, and toward those modest ambitions--predictable plot and all--he succeeds. Guiry is unusually good in what many young actors would have taken to be just another blossoming-teen part. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Good Lassie movie.......2007-01-10

I first saw this movie about ten years ago, when it came on TV one day. It's a nice update of the Lassie story - a story about a boy and his courageous dog, Lassie. Definitely recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Family Entertainment.......2006-08-23

I liked the movie a lot it is very interesting as of and I recomend it for the whole family, or for kids the age of 13/14 and under. Older kids or grown ups can watch it as well but it could be a little bit slow for them at the beginning.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-08-17

Matt is a journor high student who's family is moving from Baltimor to the country farm in Virginia where his late mother grew up. The bitterness and resentment, as well as the goodness, deep inside of Matt's heart, are realisically portayed as he relates to his Dad, his sister, and Laura, his step-mom. Lassie, a stray the family takes in, soon finds her way into the withdrawn boy's heart, and helps him change into the responsible, intelligent, and warmhearted young man he was meant to be. But their new-life in the country threatens to unravel when the construction job that Matt's Dad moved there for falls through. But Matt encourages his Dad to hold onto the farm, and try raising sheep on their pasture land (which is the best for miles around), with Lassie's help. A touching family movie, with convincing and crisp acting, emotion, and drama. Makes you laugh and cry. The slang has changed a lot since the 90's, however, giving this movie a slightly out-moded feel. Is it just me, or do teenagers really say "cool" anymore? I'm a teenager and I still do, but I think most teengers say "awesome" or "rad". But even if this isn't a classic, it's a show I'll always like.

This fourth sequel in the series finds "leaf gobblers" eating all the vegetation in Great Valley, driving Littlefoot, the young brontosaurus, and the other dinosaur inhabitants out. Arguments break out among the adults during migration, and Littlefoot and his friends decide to take matters in their own hands by crossing the "big water" to an unknown island. There they meet an old friend from The Land Before Time II--Chomper, the T-rex, who has to protect the gang from his own, carnivorous parents. Plenty of drama in this one, and as the series has been wont to do from the beginning, it shows adults as sometimes being less than perfect. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well..........2006-12-23

I only saw this movie because of Chomper's return. I'm a Chomper addict. Although I don't think this movie had even close to the amount of Chomper needed, I have to say it was a well-done movie. No, it doesn't hold a candle to the original Land Before Time or the second one, but it still deals with a sensitive and possibly disturbing dilemma (the Sharpteeth's eating of the other dinosaurs) in a mature way.

Chomper talks--I wasn't really expecting that. But it was adorable and I love him! He even sings! Eee!

I wasn't disappointed with this movie (I mean, I gave it four stars), but I wasn't too thrilled. More Chomper and it would've been perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs in this one!.......2006-04-14

My son, now three, loves this series beyond all others. This one in particular, due to the songs. 'Big Water' is one of those songs that he will just start singing, out of the blue, weeks after the last time he viewed the movie. Good stuff. As with all movies, watch with your kids. This one has some name-calling dialogue in it that I always point out as inappropriate.

Writer-director John Sayles weaves together the beauty, grime, and history of Florida in Sunshine State. The rumbling approach of real estate developers on a sleepy island sets the leisurely paced plot in motion. Sayles takes his time introducing his characters, gradually revealing how their lives intertwine, and, as always, teases magnificent performances out of his actors. Edie Falco is quietly brilliant as Marly, running an old-guard motel as progress marches on, and regarding the men in her life with a wry practicality. Mary Steenburgen gifts a small role with marvelous, spoiled humanity in a deft comic turn, and Angela Bassett slowly unfurls her character's depth with the elegance of a true pro. Sunshine State is a simple story, but never clichéd, possessing a glow worth basking in. --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars and they wondered why those hanging chads and butterfly ballots were so problematic.......2007-06-18

sayles is one of the most talented underrated filmmakers of our day. it seems to me a film like this should have at least made a hit with the indie-hipster crowd, but i guess the wry humor may be lost on the other 49 states, myself being a third generation floridian. if you plan on visiting florida, you really oughta watch this movie first. you'll appreciate the place better afterwards. the movie is shot entirely on location, a number of places i've been numerous times. he really nailed every beat in this slice-of-life kind of film. (over)developers have come to renovate a sleepy island town and some of the inhabitants are rather reticent about seeing their heritage replaced with convenience stores and condos. this is the premise, and from here, Sayles lets the characters take over, and in no hurry. they are all interesting enough, though, to hold our attention and are extremely believable (they could all be my neighbors). the most endearing character for me, though, is the locale itself, replete with gators, mom-and-pop stores, scars of segregation (people forget mickey's winter home is below the mason-dixon), gators, greedy commercialists, seminoles-gone-redneck, southern rock bands, and retirees. i may be biased, but this film is the transcendance of the mundane at its best

1 out of 5 stars Dumbest thing ever put on film. Absolutely dreadful!!!.......2007-05-01

After reading some truly scathing reviews of this 2002 film (NOT including the word-of-mouth reactions of other movie fans I know), I decided to watch it to see if their opinions were correct......they were. I am a true movie buff myself: I get great satisfaction from settling into my chair (with a good snack of course) and unwinding from daily stress by watching an entertaining DVD.....but my day only got worse when I plugged in the "bordom fest" known as Sunshine State. I forced myself to endure all of it; more than two hours of people literally doing nothing (well, I'm afraid that's not really fair; they DO chat an aweful lot....but thats it). I had read the film was a comedy/drama. Well, besides having to pay real close attention to identify a dramatic moment or two there was nothing even remotely funny about Sunshine State. In fact, you're so disappointed in the film that if there were a humorous moment you wouldn't even feel like laughing. The film makers really did forget to have something happen in this movie. There is no action, no comedy, no art, NO PLOT, just a bland look at ordinary people doing ordinary things in Florida. The most exciting part of the whole movie featured an alligator sitting in a pen...doing nothing. Seriously, you will overdose on bordom if you watch this film. If you have trouble sleeping at night, just watch 15 minutes of this movie....start it from the end if you like (it won't matter). I friend of mine watched this film in a class because it had simularities to "The Grapes of Wrath". He said within 15 minutes half the class was asleep and the other half was wondering about the hallways to escape from this monstrosity of a movie. He even had this to say about Sunshine State: "Every hair on my head was growing in the direction of the exit's welcoming glow". Even the cast from Mystery Science Theater 3000 wouldn't know where to begin making fun of this train wreck. Actually, I am offended this movie was made in my home state. A word to the wise: AVOID SUNSHINE STATE AT ALL COSTS!

OVERALL DOCUMENTED SCORE: F

3 out of 5 stars Avoiding Sunshine Stereotypes.......2007-04-08

This is a relatively plot free movie that is essentially a characters study. In some ways it resembles two other movies of this type: Wilby Wonderful, and The June Bug. In fact Sunshine State and Wilby Wonderful both have a character who wanders through the movie trying to find a way to kill himself. Two threads that run through this story are a town's annual celebration, and the coming of land developers. These are not dominant plot elements, however, rather they seem to flow along under the surface, and break through at odd moments during the film. So we are left mostly to meeting and learning about several of the town's inhabitants. The difficulty in such a movie is to create interesting people who are not just stereotypes.

Edie Falco, as the woman who manages a motel and restaurant for her almost blind father, does extremely well. You catch her frustration in being burdened with a job that she doesn't want. She is an intelligent person who had wanted to be an oceanographer. Her father, who has a small part, is interesting as a man who struggles with his conservative and sometimes racist views in a changing world. Other inhabitants of Sunshine State border on the ordinary. While they provide us with modest interest, scenes often linger too long on them. Other folks who might be interesting are left in the shadows.

All in all I found this movie to be less satisfying than the other two films that I mentioned above: Wilby Wonderful, and The June Bug. The June Bug is an outstanding movie. Could I persuade you to watch those two instead of this one?

5 out of 5 stars Heart and home.......2006-01-21

Sayles produces an ensemble film with lots of characters moving emotionally, and some staying in place. As with many of Sayles's films, it has a mixed-race cast, something I don't see in many films; he makes a point of discussing ethnicity and identity in many ways. The acting is good, based on Sayles's good script. There are a couple character types from classical theater, like the seer (the doctor), and the Greek chorus (the 4 golfers), that I really appreciated. With interludes of these larger-than-life characters, the movie is more than plot- or entertainment-driven. I also found a lot of suspense in the movie, with questions as simple as "Can we go in here?" or "I'm glad you're here, I've been wanting to talk with you" making me wonder where a scene would lead because the characters don't know where it will go.

There are 2 major plots surrounding 2 excellent actors, the beautiful and angry Angela Bassett and the pretty but sad Edie Falco. Desiree (Bassett) appears to be condemned by old friends and her own mom as a teenage runaway returning almost impossibly late to reconnect, when in fact her parents sent her away. Hers is a strong story of the possibility of recovering some good feelings about her childhood home now that she is in a loving marriage with a really mellow guy (James McDaniel - excellent in this film).

The seer talks about history and the vitality of Lincoln Beach (in the movie), a beachfront neighborhood based on and filmed in the real American Beach, which was a resort founded by a black-owned insurance company for its employees during segregation. Sayles's commentary on the DVD covers a lot of historical detail, but there's enough in the movie to be intriguing and provocative. In this context of aging home owners whose kids have moved elsewhere, we meet what you might call a "face man" for development in Lincoln Beach that is a foil of the development happening overtly in the historically white neighborhood next door, in Delrona Beach. Alex Lewis gives a nuanced performance; he is really good.

I found the movie to be visually interesting, for example with the Greek chorus of golfers. Their movements are mundane, yet at times like a dance around the gesturing perorations of Alan King. In his commentary, Sayles talks about how closely he story-boarded much of the film to make economical use of the actors' time; I wonder if this helps explain how carefully positioned the actors were relative to each other and how good the lighting was, throughout the film.

I thought Terrell, the young cousin who lives with Desiree's mom, was a key character in the film, as an ensemble film, very believable in his character, and a good actor. Given how closed off he was for most of the film, he did a really good job relaxing a little with Desiree's husband, and he's perfect when they part.

I think the film did a good job showing the complicated affection people feel about their childhood homes, their aging parents, and perhaps their duty to a place as well as to people. Well, there's always a lot to say about a Sayles film, but I won't drone on. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but preachy.......2005-10-08

This is an excellent film in many ways. The acting is particularly impressive (check out Edie Falco and Mary Steenburgen). There are five stories going at once, and they are treated with delicacy and depth. The pace is brisk and the script is tight. The plot is described in other reviews.

The movie is marred by Sayles's usual leftist preaching style. All of the corporation executives are evil, town officials are corrupt and rude, all of the blacks are good (two hold doctorates), and there are some strong and at times muddled statements about civil rights. Preaching aside, there is a melodramatic aspect to the film that may turn off some viewers. The golfer scenes with Alan King defy explanation, although they are mildly amusing.

Still, on the whole, this is a first-rate film that deserves a lot of attention. It gives one hope for modern films.

A darkly humorous and powerful exploration of post-9/11 America. -OFFICIAL SELECTION: 2004 Toronto Film Festival -Films with 9/11 subject matter timely in marketplace: Oliver Stone's World Trade Center and United 93 (DVD 9-5-2006)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars captures 2003 America.......2007-05-13

A little disorienting at first, this movie is such a rich tapestry with several multidimensional characters that one can't be certain where it's taking us. The America never seen in American films (except by Haskell Wexler) defines post-9/11 bewilderment within the context of poverty, legitimate faith, and paranoia. A second viewing--during the director's commentary--reveals that (Leonard Maltin's review to the contrary) the narrative structure is tight.

The central male character conjures up the anomie of the leads in THE PARALLAX VIEW, TAXI DRIVER, and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. The Christian heroine is a good and decent young woman, played with freshness and sincerity and not one whiff of cynicism. The black minister, performed by one of THE WIRE's wittier regulars, offers a more true-to-life representation of black Americans' core values than almost ever reaches American TV or movie screens, and without treacle or bombastics. One regrets the absence of close-ups in the cameo by Gloria (TITANIC, INVISIBLE MAN) Stuart, but her scene is delightful.

In his commentary, Wenders repeatedly extols the use of DVD cameras that allowed him to complete 60 or 70 set-ups a day in a 16-day shoot. The cinematography (all hand-held) is astonishingly beautiful. And Wenders rightly praises his set designer who had only $20,000 to work with and yet came in under budget!

Doubtless, the German director's background affords him the distance with which to comment so cogently on America a couple of months after Bush declared the invasion of Iraq a success. With its documentary feel and non-mainstream perspective, LAND OF PLENTY will increase in value over the years, as a photo album of conditions and attitudes we can only hope will continue to heal.

4 out of 5 stars A Wim Wenders Winner.......2007-04-13

There's a lot to be said for a film that makes profound statements about the 9/11 attacks and its effects on Vietnam vets. Most of us were probably too shocked inside our own little bubble to realize the impact these men felt when exploding planes collapsed the twin towers. But director Wim Wenders (DON'T COME KNOCKING) pulls it off thanks to a fairly good script and even better acting by lead actors John Diehl and Michelle Williams.

Never having seen Diehl in a leading role, this movie shows he's got some serious chops and can act with the best Hollywood has to offer. Equally Michelle Williams pulls off a stunningly excellent performance as the worldly but loving niece who helps Diehl discover himself all over again.

The story ...

Paul (John Diehl) is a Vietnam vet living in Los Angeles. He lives in a fantasy world all his own, believing that he's helping with national security by tracking suspicious looking people with his surveillance tricked-out van. He operates a camera that comes out of the van's sunroof and records activity around town.

Michelle (Michelle Williams, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) is returning from Tel Aviv after years away from the States. Her mother passed away and she's trying to hook up with her last surviving relative in America: Paul. Working at a mission for the poor, she befriends many of its patrons and meets up with a withdrawn Arab-looking gentleman named Hassan (Shaun Taub, CRASH) who also happens to be one of Paul's prime suspects.

Paul witnesses Hassan hauling boxes of borax and quickly learns that it is an ingredient for certain bomb materials. On high alert, Paul records everything Hassan does. This brings him closer to his niece, Michelle. But Hassan lives on the street and is eventually shot to death right in front of Paul, making him believe that someone knocked him off for sinister reasons.

Michelle is beset with grief about Hassan's death and searches for one of his family members. Eventually finding one near Death Valley, she convinces Paul to drive her and the body to Hassan's brother for burial. Paul agrees in the hopes of gaining more information about who Hassan was and what he was up to.

As the nexus between Paul's old Vietnam life and the new one that awaits him with Michelle begins to culminate, we see him battling bad dreams of his time in Southeast Asia but being aided and comforted by Michelle and, to his surprise, by Hassan's death and Hassan's brother.

We quickly learn that Paul went down a bad trail after the 9/11 attacks, his mind sparking up old memories in order to protect itself. He lives in his van, which is his life-connection to the world now. But that will change once Michelle teaches him how to trust again.

The film is touching if sometimes a bit heavy-handed in the dialogue department. We're sometimes forcibly given rather trite information about the homeless and war, but this is easily overlooked thanks to the able acting of its two main characters.

4 out of 5 stars 'Angst and Alienation in America'.......2006-11-22

LAND OF PLENTY is nowhere near as powerful a title for this brilliant Wim Wenders film as the original working title, ANGST AND ALIENATION IN AMERICA. This is another Wim Wenders wonder of filmmaking, a quiet little powerhouse of a movie that should be required viewing for all of us. Wenders wrote this moving piece with assistance from Scott Derrickson and Michael Meredith and directs a sterling cast in an exploration of the American psyche post 9/11, and few writer/directors could have keener insight into the state of mind of a country at odds with itself and the rest of the world.

Lana (Michelle Williams) is flying back to the US after a two-year stay on the West Bank. She is the daughter of missionaries, having lived her life in Africa and other missionary fields and she is flying home after her mother's death to deliver a letter to her uncle Paul (John Diehl), a damaged Vietnam vet who has cut himself off from his family and the rest of life and in response to 9/11, his mind being obsessed with tracking Sleeper Cells to destroy terrorists in his own homemade surveillance van. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Lana is met by Henry (Wendell Pierce) who is a pastor who runs a mission for the homeless of Los Angeles and provides Lana with a bleak room and a job in the kitchen of the mission. Lana is full of praise for God for all things, the optimistic evangelical girl who fails to recognize evil. One member of the mission bunkhouse is a Pakistani Hassan (Shaun Toub) whose garments and fixation on boxes of Borax alerts Paul to his possible involvement as a terrorist.

Lana contacts Paul, desires to connect with him, but Paul is aloof, obsessed with his 'mission' to ferret out terrorists. When Hassan is the victim of a drive-by shooting Lana is devastated at the loss of a human being while Paul is convinced Hassan was hit by a larger organization. Paul with his colleague Jimmy (Richard Edson) discover Hassan has a brother who lives in Trona (outside of Death Valley). Together Lana and Paul transport the corpse of Hassan to his brother Youssef (Bernard White) who lives in a hut in Trona: Lana is committed to doing the right thing, Paul sees an entry into more evidence for evil to quash. While Lana is warmly entertained by Youssef, Paul investigates the town and finds that the Borax boxes of Hassan's business were innocent means of washing carpets imported from Pakistan. The coming together of Youssef, Lana, and Paul finally achieves meaning when Paul reads the letter from his sister, Lana's mother, who somehow manages to erase all lines of prejudice, bigotry, religious differences, misunderstanding - finally giving breathing room to the damaged souls of the brotherhood of man the three represent.

Wenders manages to bathe his story in the light of reality yet maintain an unprejudiced stance in moving his characters through their paths of revelation. The camera wanders a bit, the music blends perhaps too heavily, and the pieces of the puzzle don't always fit together - much like life doesn't always fall into place the way we expect. But there is much to learn from Wenders' wisdom and with the aid of perfect performances from Michelle Williams, John Diehl, and Wendell Pierce he has created an indelible work. A fine film for us all to ponder. Grady Harp, November 06

4 out of 5 stars A German director's reconcilation with 9/11.......2006-10-13

Wim Wenders has long had a love affair with America. He is particularly drawn to desolate places in the west and too enamored (imo) with American pop music. I'll get the flaws off my chest right away: too much pop music, or just over-musicked, and this is my major pet peeve in movies generally. Silence can often accomplish so much more. Second flaw is that it just skirts sentimentality.

John Diehl and Michelle Williams were absolutelty wonderful. Diehl is a dead-ringer for John Sayles but I got used to it. He is a 55-ish Vietnam vet who was exposed to Agent Orange and he is still suffering from PTSD. He is obsessed with the threat of more terrorism and he is so off-the-wall sometimes it is funny but he has no notion of how he must seem to others and he has little humor inside him. He is a patriot to his bones and drives around in his home-made detection and surveillance van aided by his somewhat goofy sidekick Richard Edson (who I like so much and am pleased he is in the movie).

Diehl is on the lookout for anything odd or untoward that might in any realm of rational thought possibly be a threat to America. He notices an Arab carrying boxes of Borax and he is hot on a trail that he thinks will lead him to a terrorist cell.

Enter his niece, Michelle Williams, who has just returned to the US after living in Israel and being involved with both Israelis and Palestinians. She has lived most of her life in Africa with her missionary parents. Diehl is her only living relative and she searches and finds him. This is the first time I have seen a deeply Christian person depicted in film who is credible and believable and doesn't make me want to puke (exceptions that come to mind are Susan Sarandon in Dead Man Walking and Karl Malden in On the Waterfront). She has a radiance that stops a few degrees short of boring and trite--so she nails the role and is very touching.

The Arab man is killed in a drive-by shooting (or was it? was it something more sinister?) and Michelle and her uncle bring the man's body to his only relative who Michelle has traced. Michelle and her uncle have totally different agendas and the resolution is very satisfying.

I didn't watch the movie with Wenders' voice-over commentary but I did watch The Making Of and Wenders has insightful and worthy things to say about America, its position in the world in the wake of 9/11 and what he was hoping to accomplish in this movie. Really liked it a lot despite its flaws.

This is the lowest budget movie ever. The only saving grace is the way too low-cut swimsuit shot near the beginning of the movie. Well, they had to do something to make it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars This movie's SUPPOSED to be stupid........2003-02-09

This movie was written with every intent to make you role your eyes and laugh. And, for me, it succeeded very well; I didn't stop laughing through the entire thing. It takes nothing seriously, especially itself (that's called a farce). It pokes fun at the film industry and itself. If you want to take a break from reality, be thoroughly entertained, and learn nothing of redeaming value, this is the perfect movie.

2 out of 5 stars WOW! WHAT A HORRIBLE MOVIE!.......2002-10-14

Ok, first off, I love Corey Feldman and Corey Haim, and I love movies, but I almost couldn't even finish this movie. They get fired from their job and kicked out of their apartment, so Feldman's uncle that is an ex-pirate actor magically warps them to his island to become scuba instructors, but his uncle's old on screen nemesis tries to take over the island and blah blah blah. I would like to meet the guy that wrote this script and thougth he had something special. The only reason I gave this 2 stars is because the two Corey's are in it, and both of them rule, they just got caught in a very bad movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2001-09-21

Not only is this a great movie, but it has Corey Feldman! Now Corey Feldman can do no wrong by me. I think every Corey fan should see this movie. And I think Corey is one of the most talented people out there and I don't care who knows it! So make fun of him all you want because to the people that really like him it doesn't matter.

4 out of 5 stars Duh, this movie isn't supposed to make sense.......2000-09-30

I read a lot of reviews of this movie and they all say pretty much the same thing, it's unintelligable, but i think that's kind of the point. The first time I saw this movie it was on TNT at 1:00 in the morning, which is the time i recommend people watch this movie if they want to get the full effect, because when you are extreamly tired, you don't care about a plot, you just say hey, that's a cool movie, which is what this movie is. There's some great visuals like sam and dave's split apartment, and plastic figures hanging from wires that are apparently suspended in mid air. You must keep an open mind when watching this movie, don't ask how sam and dave get from a bus stop bench in a dark ally to an island in the blink of an eye, just go with it...and watch out for the snake

5 out of 5 stars Buy this because it is so bad, it's good........2004-08-19

5 out of 5 stars Little Don Plays Big Red.......2006-01-13

This is yet another adaptation of a popular comic strip. Yours truly regularly read Red Ryder comic books as a teen, and this is worthy translation. Don Barry is very good in the title role, although he really doesn't fit the comic book look of Red Ryder--Red is a tall gangly guy, and Barry is very short. It's comical (pun intended) to see him do a little hop when he mounts his horse in order to be able to jump up that high! Directors Witney and English couldn't stand working with Barry and his oversize ego (they called him "the midget"); apparently he constantly wanted to change things and write his own lines. Despite this, the relationship works very well indeed on the screen. Probably they gave him that huge hat to make him look taller.

Tommy Cook plays Red's buddy Little Beaver, and he does well with the silly "Indian lingo" lines they gave him. Noah Beery ("Overland Mail", "Zorro Rides Again") is an all-time favorite Western bad-guy, and William Farnum helps out. Hal Taliaferro, seen in lots of serials, is Red's pal Cherokee, and Maude Pierce Allen is terrific as Red's aunt, the Duchess. The indefatigible Davy Sharpe does the stunt work for Barry.

5 out of 5 stars "Red Ryder B-Western Series ... Wild Bill Elliott as Red Ryder ... VCI Home Video" .......2004-09-12

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Gordon Elliott (6/15/1903 - 11/26/1965) from Pattonsburg, Mo, later known at William "Wild Bill" Elliott (the Peaceable Man) was the best Red Ryder on the big screen ~ he got the name of "Wild Bill" after starring in a Columbia serial "The Great Adventurers of Wild Bill Hickok" back in 1938, went on to make a multitude of westerns during the '40s and '50s ~ it was then Republic Studios was looking for a star to be featured in Fred Harman's Red Ryder comic strip series coming alive and on the big screen ~ it's no small wonder that William Elliott's name was at the top of the list ~ working with the top directors of the day Howard P. Bretherton, Spencer Gordon Bennett, Joseph Kane, Wallace A. Grissell, Leslie Selander and R.G. Springsteen all under Republic Pictures banner.

First up is "The San Antonio Kid" (1944-B&W-59 mins), featuring William Elliott as Red Ryder, Bobby Blake as Little Beaver, Alice Fleming as the Duchess (Reds Aunt), Duncan Renaldo (later to become The Cisco Kid, Robin Hood of the Old West) as Johnny Bennett (the San Antonio Kid), Glenn Strange as Ace Hanlon, LeRoy Mason as Walter Garfield, Linda Stirling (of Republic Serial fame) as Ann Taylor and Jack Kirk as Ben Taylor...with a cattle car full of Republics ace stuntmen Yakima Canutt (king of the stunt department), Henry Wills and Tom Steele (Ryder's stunt double) ~ plenty of action to go around ~ oil is discovered and it looks like some slick villainy is afoot to drive the Taylor's and neighboring ranchers off their land ~ time for Red and his horse Thunder to go into action.

Second on this double bill is "Cheyenne Wildcat" (1944-B&W-54 mins), again Elliott, Blake and Fleming star in a bank fraud involving some very savory characters, such as Tom London, Roy Barcroft (King of the Badmen) was so good at being Bad! ~ on the same bill is Peggy Stewart as the daughter of an honest deceased banker who was shot on the stage for mysterious reasons ~ it's up to Red Ryder and Little Beaver to see beyond such treachery ~ director Leslie Selander takes several turns in this delightful story, all of which involve the stuntwork of Republic's best in the business.

5 out of 5 stars 1940's Red Ryder and Little Beaver Volume 1, come to DVD!.......2002-11-08

Many now only relate to "Red Ryder's Genuine Carbine Action Two-Hundred Shot Lightning Loader Range Model Air Rifle" made famous in the 1983 Christmas movie, "A Christmas Story". This story was about a 10 year old boys obsession with getting Red Ryder's air rifle for Christmas.

Well now, we can all see this famous no-nonsense cowboy and his little sidekick Indian boy, Little Beaver in action. This was a perfect pair & their complete honorable taming of the west.

Red Ryder & Little Beaver adventures dominated the comic strips in the 1930's - 1950's. Late in the 30's REd Ryder came to the screen in a 12 action packed episode serial. Pretty good stuff and a sample coming attraction of this early Red Ryder serial is included on this double feature DVD.

The 1940's Red Ryder introduced the most popular Red Ryder with Wild Bill Elliot and Robert Blake an Little Beaver. This duo went on to make over a dozen Red Ryder movies in the 40's.
This Double Feature remastered DVD Full Screen Black/White includes 2 of thier movies.

An Antonio Kid (1944 / 52 minutes) - greedy outlaws pursuit of the coveted "Black Gold" by terrorizing ranchers.

Cheyenne Wildcat (1947 / 50 minutes) - Red becomes the object of desire of 2 ladies while he & Lil' Beaver pursue outlaws.

This is wholesome fun family entertainment. Red & Lil' Beaver compliment each other and there is genuine onscreen friendship chemistry between them. This is fun stuff. Nice addition to the old western DVD library. Also included is a movie billboard & comic strip montage extra.

Also, now we see why Ralphie Parker from "A Christmas Story" obsessed over Red Ryder!!! Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Red Ryder-Memories.......2002-08-13

These two western "B" movies from the 40's are typical of the westerns of the war years. The second movie, "Cheyene Wildcat" is the best of the Elliott "Ryder" movies. A big plus is Robert Blake (Baretta) playing Little Beaver! Another big plus, is Roy Barcroft as the mean villian. As with all the old movies coming out in DVD, the quality is very good.
If you are over 60 you'll enjoy the memory-if you are under 60 you get to see a time when good triumphed over evil!

4 out of 5 stars ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER.......2002-05-26

I don`t believe this one ever got to the U.K. when i was riding the range at Saturday cinema. One word. Wonderful. My memories of serials in the early 50`s here in U.K. were Blackhawk. Possibly the best ever. Jungle Girl, Captain Video,SirLancelot,Superman, and White Eagle. Now at almost 60 years old to be able to relive those happy years once again with a serial like Red Ryder plus a TV episode with one of my favorite cowboys Rocky Lane is beyond words. The D V D transfer is very good its a treat to be able to see a good quality picture at last. I`ve had enough of poor quality slow speed video copy`s and as for some of the material some people get away with on the net. I urge you forget the rubbish and go for D V D and make Red Ryder your first choice. Come on company`s lets have some more...
