Customer Reviews:
Ever After.......2007-03-09
I found this to be an excellent telling of the Cinderella story. I like everything that I have seen Drew Barrymore in.
One of THE Best movies, ever!.......2007-01-26
The whole family watches this movie often and it never gets old! Even my husband loves it!
Forever Wonderful.......2007-01-14
The best Cinderella story ever told, this version stars Drew Barrymore as Danielle De Barbarac. She is smart, poised, and a bit of a socialist. And she meets Leonardo da Vinci. And, of course, there is a prince.
Best Take on the Cinderella Story Ever.......2007-01-12
One of Drew Barrymore's best roles (so far). You don't have to be a Drew Barrymore fan to love this movie. Not too adult for kids, and adults will appreciate the heroine's travails and trimphs, since she depends on her own brains and strength to overcome obstacles. Good characters surround her - the acting is first rate.
Cinderella Revisted.......2007-01-10
Ah, what can be said about this film? A LOT....
It is, first and foremost, a retelling of the classic tale of Cinderella, but infused with historical fiction and factual characters.
You've read the plot points above, and I don't need to go over them again... The movie, however, is spectacular...! The acting is just about top notch, with excellent performances by Drew Barrymore (as Danielle, aka Cindersoot/Cinderella) and Dougray Scott (as the crown prince of France, Henry). Exceptional is the word to describe Anjelica Houston's performance as Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent, the "evil" step-mother.
Great performances are turned in by nearly all the supporting characters, including an interesting twist on the "evil" step-sisters, Maguerite and Jacqueline... But in this retelling - only one of the sisters is truly mean and spiteful - a vengeful witch of a girl... Jacqueline, however, being somewhat plainer than her blond bombshell of a sister, is far more accepting of Danielle and others as the story unfolds.
Also a surprise is Richard O'Brian (of Rocky Horror and Shock Treatment fame) as an evil and covetous local baron/lord who sets his sites on Danielle and won't take NO for an answer - until he's threatened with becoming skewered by Danielle...
A truly humorous scene is the wedding of Prince Henry is just about to wed a wailing and thoroughly unhappy princess of Spain - who sobs and cries and wails throughout the ceremony - also lamenting that she cannot marry the one she loves, and is, instead, forced into a royal arrangement between her parents and Henry's parents.
The film is also peppered with great lines of dialog that are delivered with precision and the proper tone, right down to Baroness Rodmilla demurely asking how long she may have to live, after her treachories are discovered.
With inputs from Leonardo da Vinci, the King & Queen of France (Francis and his wife), and a band of Gypsies, not to mention the household staff of Danielle's familial home, we get the "Happily ever after" ending we all love and care about...

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I will love Ever After forever after.......2007-06-29
This is the kind of movie you will watch over and over again with your daughter or your grandchildren (or by yourself on a day you need some cheering up). A time-honored story, beautifully done, and updated just enough--but not contemporized (thank goodness).
First there was "Pride and Prejudice" then "Ever After".......2007-06-29
"Pride and Prejudice" was the original formula: 1. a smart whitty character with a sharp tongue offsetting a royal admirer 2. A champion, who extends mercy and deliverance 3. A fairtale marriage to Prince Charming 4. They live happily ever after
The Cinderella story is more intriquing because the central character brings moral issues too the big screen: 1. Recognition of the middle and lower class rights - power resides with the people, not the rulers 2. the vices of involuntary servitude - bondage is abominable 3. the attractiveness of free thought and opinion - the mind is beautiful 4. Intellectual class fits with the wealth class (wealth, values, and religion) difference must be dealt with 5. Beauty overshadows poverty (commitment, passion, and intimacy) 6. Liberty is more compelling than power. (inalienable rights of man - philosophy of law) 7. Love transcends tradition. (Faith, Hope, Mercy, Love, Glory, and Beauty)
Ever After, A Cinderella Story.......2007-06-29
A new twist on "Cinderella." Drew Barrymore, a peasant servant, impersonates a Countess to plead for the freedom of an imprisoned servant bound for The Americas. While winning his freedom she meets the Prince who is curious about her resolve and conscience. He begs for her name, and the rest is an inriguing courtship. The prince is tested throughout - is he good enough for her?- and ultimately, do they live "Happily Ever After?" Overall a great lesson for the kids about morality and justice and strength through adversity, and a fun romance for adults. As a mom of four kids under thirteen, I highly recommend it.
a real cinderella.......2007-06-27
So you want a fluff story about Cinderella? This ain't it. She knows how to use swords, works herself crazy, and even throws a punch at her stepsister. Finally a version of Cinderella for modern times. Drew Barrymore shines. Wonderful characters at every turn. A sharp, fun movie to watch again and again.
Best Romantic Movie Ever.......2007-06-09
This film is GREAT. it makes in my openion the rather boring story of cinderella into a fantastic love story. it is the type of film that you could watch over and over and over again. simply GREAT!

Customer Reviews:
after finding "stories of the century" on a 2 disc set i found this 4 disc set in bargin ben.......2006-04-30
well i found all?(i guess this is all) of the shows for this little heard of western show from the 50's!! the plot has 2 agents of the railroad go after a real outlaw of the west. the show is very well written and acted and worth a look if you love westerns like me!
Legends of the Old West.......2005-07-11
Bought this four-disk set off the shelf of a national retailer at a deep, deep discount without having a clue what it contained. I discovered that they contained 40-some episodes of a mid-1950s television series named `Stories of the Century,' as well as three bonus episodes of another series I'll get to in a minute. Anyway, at a dime an episode I was pleased with this set.
`Stories of the Century' was a syndicated western that was filmed in 1954 and lasted, as far as I can tell, for about two seasons. It starred Jim Davis - later Jock Ewing of `Dallas' fame - as railroad detective Matt Clark. Mary Castle, a Rita Hayworth look-alike stars in a majority of the episodes as fellow detective Frankie Adams, Kristine Miller in some as Margaret `Jonesie" Jones. Each episode had the railroad detectives tracking down one of the many true-life bad guys of the wild west. Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr, the Dalton Gang... you name `em, this series chased `em. And caught `em. (That the story featured criminals who were active from about 1865 to about 1905 begs the question of how Clark and Frankie and Jonesie managed to stay so young for so long. My guess is that it was all that clean living. Matt and Frankie and Jonesie don't seem to have an existence beyond their job, and hanky-panky of any sort isn't even hinted at.)
Their value as present day entertainment is going to depend a lot on what you're looking for. Each episode opens with a flat, Joe Friday-like voice over introduction by Davis announcing this week's criminal and their claim to infamy. After a short scene of the criminal(s) criming we learn why Matt and Frankie or Jonesie are chasing them. If they're like Belle Starr (Marie Windsor) and they rustle cattle rather than rob trains, they rustle cattle being transported by the railroad. Matt and Frankie or Jonesie investigate, get the goods on the bad guys, chase them, have a shoot-out, and, usually, leave the bad guy as a lifeless husk.
Although the series is sprinkled with interesting characters actors - Windsor (Belle Starr), Richard Jaeckel (Billy the Kid), Slim Pickens (The Smiling (later Sundance) Kid), Jack Elam (Black Jack Ketchum) - there's a dulling sameness about things. Billy the Kid comes off pretty much the same as Frank and Jesse James, the Younger Brothers, and all the rest of them. It's diversionary entertainment at best, especially intended for the undemanding.
Surprisingly - to me, at least - `Stories of the Century' won the Emmy in 1955 for Best Western or Adventure Series, beating out the `Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok' (Guy Madison & Andy Devine), `Annie Oakley' (Gail Davis), `Death Valley Days' (then hosted by Stanley Andrews), and `The Roy Rogers Show.'
Also included are three episodes of `Judge Roy Bean,' from 1956 and starring Edgar Buchanan in the title role. The `Judge Roy Bean' episodes are in color - `Stories of the Century' is in black and white - but the color is severely faded. Buchanan as always is interesting but the three stories were clearly directed at a young and easily satisfied audience.
LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST is recommended with a lot of caveats for the emptor. Either way, if you can grab them out of the bargain bin you might be pleasantly surprised.
Best "Stories of the Century" Collection.......2005-01-28
This 4-disc set is a really good deal for fans of old TV westerns. In this set are practically all of the installments of "Stories of the Century", a western that ran from 1954-55, along with a handful of the early color series "Judge Roy Bean".
"Stories of the Century" starred Jim Davis (who we all know and love as Jock Ewing from the "Dallas" TV series). Davis plays Matt Clark, Railroad Detective, who along with his female partner Frankie (Mary Castle, season 1), or Jonsey (Kristine Miller, season 2), somehow manage to involve themselves in just about every effort to capture all of the famous outlaws the Old West produced. Strangely enough, they never seem to age despite covering cases that range from 1850-1910.
The idea of the main character being a railroad investigator is pretty clever, as it makes sense for a railroad "cinder sleuth" to have a hand in stopping or investigating many of the outlaws' raids.
All of the bad guys are famous western outlaws (like Quantrell's Raiders, or Jesse James), and this lends an air of authenticity to the show. Most of the stories are fairly accurate as to the overall events surrounding the outlaws' criminal activities and eventual punishments. However, at times the presence of Clark and his partner seems just a tad bit contrived.
In any case, Davis owns the series. While his female partners can seem a bit overly-helpless at times, Davis' Clark character is both brains and brawn enough to tangle with any threat that comes along. With such a commanding presence, it really makes you wonder why Davis never became a major TV or movie star, and why he had to wait until the late '70s to find fame again on "Dallas" (even then, Davis was more or less a supporting player).
Famous character actors pop up throughout the series, such as Denver Pyle, Slim Pickens, James Best, Lee Van Cleef, Fess Parker, Glenn Strange, James Craven, Sheb Wooley, John Dehner, Jack Elam, and others, who will all be familiar to western fans.
The show was produced by Republic Pictures' television division. Bolstered by Republic's huge library of stock footage from the many westerns they made, there are plenty of stunts and chases seamlessly worked in around the new footage of Clark and his investigations.

Documentary but Lacking.......2007-01-09
Seems like this film lacks in about every area. It is a documentary and not a good one. Sort of skims the surface in all areas reviewed. The narration is weak at best and there are not enough details to make is historically correct.

TRUE LOVE REQUIRES TRUE SACRIFICE IN FAITHFUL VERSION OF POIGNANT AND BITTERSWEET STORY.......2007-07-03
"Faerie Tale Theatre" productions are sometimes scary ("HANSEL & GRETEL") and often hilarious ("LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD", "THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA"). Rarely are they as touching and as poignant as this version of
"THE LITTLE MERMAID," directed by Robert Iscove from a teleplay by Anne Beatts.
You won't find any Disneyfied sea creatures singing a Broadway musical number under the sea; or a tacked-on Disney "happy ending" here. What we do have is a beautiful, live-action version that is faithful and true to Hans Christian Anderson's original bittersweet fairy tale.
The cast is superb. Pam Dawber's role as little mermaid Pearl, who sacrifices everything for the love of Sailor/Prince Andrew (the extremely attractive Treat Williams), is largely mute. So she must communicate her emotions mostly with just her eyes and face. The depth of sadness and despair she conveys in the face of unrequited love is truly heart-breaking.
Brian Dennehy is Pearl's father King Neptune, and also serves as Narrator. Loraine Newman and Donna McKechnie are featured as Pearl's sisters Coral and Anemone. Karen Black makes a memorable cameo appearance as the Sea Witch who begs Pearl not to sacrifice everything for the love of Andrew. "Trust me," she says, "no guy is worth it. Love is a disease that only humans catch. And once you've caught it, you can never be rid of it." The Sea Witch also tells her that when she walks on human legs, she will feel a pain like walking on knives. Nevertheless, she is prepared to endure anything. Unfortunately, although he cares for her, Andrew's heart belongs to Princess Amelia (Oscar winner Helen Mirren). Given a final opportunity to save herself, Pearl still can not and will not betray her beloved; teaching us that true love often requires truly tragic sacrifices. I actually cry every time I watch this.
I may look like your mother's bridge partner, but I assure you that I am a witch!.......2006-11-01
I don't need a singing crab, or barbie-esque animation to enjoy a faerie tale. Anyone who would compare the pioneering efforts of Shelley Duvall's faerie tale theatre to a Disney film is seriously beyond my comprehension.
I found this episode delightful as an eight-year-old boy, and I find it delightful 20 years later. Karen Black truly amazes as the sea witch. Her precious few minutes onscreen make it worth purchasing the disc. As for the rest of the cast, they all performed rather effectively in my opinion. I am anxiously awaiting the entire set.
Good for a movie made in the 80's.......2005-01-20
In response to M. Reinking's review, I agree that Disney's The Little Mermaid was the best Little Mermaid movie. And the quality of the acting and etc. of the Faerie Tale Theatre version is a little sad, but it was made in the 80's..or early early 90's...
Also, she did become a Spirit of the Air in the original Hans Christian Anderson story...because she spared the Prince's life. So I value this version of the story, because it's the first (and so far, only) true version of the actual story. I think that's what was good about all the Faerie Tale Theater movies. Also, if anyone happens to know...there was a bunch of fairy tales that used to show on the Disney Channel. Does anyone know what those were called? Please, let me know...
One of the better episodes.......2004-12-11
QUOTED FROM M REINKING -""One also must note the ending, which tries to change the sad ending of the original fairy tale where the Mermaid turns into seafoam, and that's the end of that. But here, they make her a "Spirit of the Air", so she can watch over her Prince. Blah. A bad ending to a bad film.""
M. Reinking obviously did not read the original story by Hans Anderson. Yes the mermaid did start to turn to sea foam, but that was not the end of that. in the book she was transformed into a "Daughter of the Air" and given a second chance at obtaining an eternal soul. So M Reinking doesn't even know what they are talking about.
As for the film, Yes, the special effects would be laughed at by kids today spoiled with amazing looking films like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Where the film still stands strong though is in the story and performances by Pam Dawber, Treat Williams and the always admirable Helen Mirren. Shelly Duvall did a great service for kids in the 80's with her series of Faerie Tale Theaters. Sure today we have films and series of better quality but I would hope that everyone who grew up with these can still appriciate them the way they did when they were kids.
a true FAERIE TALE THEATRE classic.......2004-11-07
FAERIE TALE THEATRE's touching and tender recreation of THE LITTLE MERMAID (the second-last in the series) is one of their best efforts.
Pearl (Pam Dawber) is a beautiful young mermaid who lives with her father King Neptune (Brian Dennehy) and her sisters Coral and Anemonie (Donna McKechnie and Laraine Newman) in a kingdom at the bottom of the ocean. When Pearl comes of age and is allowed a brief glimpse of the world above the sea, she falls in love with a handsome Prince (Treat Williams) whom she saves from drowning when his ship has a fatal explosion.
She makes a bargain with the Sea Witch (Karen Black): her voice in exchange for a pair of legs and hopefully the love of the Prince. Once on land Pearl quickly returns to the Prince, though he only has eyes for the lovely Princess Emilia (Helen Mirren).
What follows is a heartbreaking story of selfless love and sacrifice, as Pearl risks everything for true love...
Pam Dawber leads a strong cast. Karen Black is amazing as the Sea Witch; Newman and McKechnie are a delight as Pearl's sisters and Treat Williams fills the role of the Prince admirably. A true gem in the series

Joyride Review.......2003-05-29
For anyone teaching a course to young actors, screenwriters, or directors, this pic is an excellent tool. The problems inherent in the pic are just as instructive as its shining moments leaving a great deal of room to pick apart camera techinques, how the use of a musical score can detract from or add to a scene, and especially internalization of motive leading to choices an actor must make to infuse life into what otherwise could end up being a stereotypical, two-dimensional character.
Tobey Maguire has built a very respectable career on his sensitive, understated performances, yet the raw J.T. offers insight into Maguire's ability to branch out into personalities that are not always the "hero." Though his relative inexperience does show through in places, the strong believability of his interpretation of J.T. clearly shows the raw talent evident in even his early work.
By far the most provoking performance in the pic is the underrated Amy Hathaway as the internally tortured and physically exploited Tanya. A solid character interpretation from start to finish, Hathaway only stumbles when the script asks her for unnecessarily gratuitous lust, specifically the silly romp-in-the-car scene with Maguire. On a contrasting note, during the powerful bedroom scene with the Mayor, Hathaway shines by deftly conveying a deep-seated anguish for Tanya's unfortunate situation that is craftily hidden during the remainder of her performance.
Also highly noteworthy is Benecio Del Toro. It is common knowledge that small-budget productions can offer a wider scope of interpretation for an actor, and Del Toro demonstrates this to the fullest extent. A master of subtle physical acting, this early role showcases the talent that blossomed in later years. Along the same lines, Christina Naify as Ms. Smith does a nice job creating a real person out of a small amount of material by exploring physical gestures and vocal patterns that make up so much of a human being's personality.
All of the actors, and to a large extent the script itself, are nearly annihilated in many places by the exasperatingly poor musical score. Instead of developing in the viewer a deeper understanding of the character's interactions, the score is often bad enough to be considered a true "groaner."
A must-see for Maguire, Hathaway, Del Toro, and those quirky Adam West fans, "Joyride" is more interesting as a study of technique than great storytelling, but well worth the ride.
Offbeat, Entertaining, full of twists. Enjoy........2002-08-13
Produced in 1996, this film is enjoyable on many levels. Drama, comedy, thriller...
Tobey Maguire shows his star power. He seems to be having fun with the role of J.T. Likewise his co-stars Wilson Cruz and Amy Hathaway work well together as three friends trying to escape their various situations in life. Adam West and Steven Gilborn are cast against type to advantage and a nice cameo from James Karen also add to the enjoyment. Benicio Del Toro is hilarious as the deadly serious Detective Lopez and Kenn Norman is believable as the sheriff. Also noteworthy is Judson Mills as Redneck Joey. Lastly I have to say Christina Naify is a standout as 'Smith'. At once sexy and deadly, she plays her part exceptionally well. Thoroughly recommended. The DVD has no special features of note, with the exception of a filmography and biography of Tobey Maguire. The print is excellent and the sound crisp. Buy It!
SMITH rocks!.......2002-06-03
Hey "SMITH"! I'm impressed. Talk about out of character - you weren't like that in '82! I guess you've come a long way since then. I'd love to see you in many more movies - you go girl! If you see this review, contact me at B'mont's alumni site (we're having a reunion 6/22).
joyride.......1999-11-28
This was an fascinating movie. The friendships and the reality of the move were refreshing and the fantasy was just as awsome. Oh and batman... too cool.
Joyride was a fun ride.......1999-09-10
I enjoyed this film immensely. It may be contrived, but its still very entertaining. I wonder if Smith is the Smith from the film. If it is, I'd like to tell her that I really enjoyed the film. Everyone should check the film out. I saw it on HBO and really liked it.

A Classic revenge western plus THREE ordinary ones.......2004-02-07
Five stars is given for these reasons: a. Mr Brando's directorial effort resulted in one of the best REVENGE westerns ever made. I rate it up with UNFORGIVEN and worth frequent revisiting. It is the FIRST of FOUR films on this collection. Mr Brando is also one of the most beautiful men ever to grace the cinema, and his movements, whether killing, jumping, standing, or throwing over a table and exclaiming " Stand up you scum sucking pig (and die) "are balletic and poetic in form. b. The films stand alone with no extras and that's fine by me. c. .... True Western lovers, of which I am one, can watch just about any western and get something out of it. Although the other three films aren't masterpieces, they're ok (we call them oaters )with some sterling actors. Enjoy - hey, for ten bucks it's better than a poke in the eye with a stick!
Four Entertaining Films, Memorable Actors and Great Scenery.......2002-12-24
This review refers to "Legends of the West" 4 movie DVD(BCI Elipse LLC 2002)......
Four action packed, entertaining Westerns, a host of great actors and some wonderful photography is what you get in this package. There are 2 discs with 1 film on each side. Here's a list with a little about each film and the quality of the picture.
The first is "One-Eyed Jacks"(1961). This one, the first and only film directed by Marlon Brando, is worth the price of admission by itself. Brando("Rio") stars with Karl Malden("Dad Longworth") as two bank robbers on the run from the Federales in Mexico, They are pinned down and only one can get away to get fresh horses for their escape. Dad is the one to go, but greed gets the best of him. He takes off with the loot and leaves Rio to be captured, and sent to a Mexican Jail for 5 long years. He escapes and goes looking for Dad, he finds him in Monterey, California, where "Dad" is now a Sheriff and has a beautiful step-daughter, Louisa. The action and the romance heat up along the beautiful California coastline.Pina Pellicer won a Best Actress for her role as Louisa at the Sebastion International Film Festival, and Charles Lang was nominated for the exquiste cinematography. The film also stars Katy Jurado(always wonderful), and western legends Slim Pickens and Ben Johnson. This one is in widescreen, and looks and sounds pretty good on this DVD.Colors are nice and dialouge clear. Not much sign of age on this one.
"The Sundowners" is next.(NOT the 1960 one with Robert Mitchum)This one was made in 1950. It stars Robert Preston, and Robert Sterling. Sterling plays Tom Cloud, a rancher who hires a notorious gunman to help protect his cattle. There have been a rash of thefts and some neighbors are suspect. The town is in an uproar that Cloud would bring such a villanous thug to their community, but Tom has his reasons, and as the story unfolds we find out why.The film also stars such greats as Chill Wills as "Sam" and Jack Elam as "Earl".Filmed in Texas, it's pure Western action and entertainment. The film is in dire need of a restoration. It really showed it's age and the technicolor it was filmed in seemed wash out.But worth watching to see these great stars way back when.(Preston even does a little singing).
"The Big Trees"(1952), Stars Kirk Douglas, as a lumberman intent on claiming ownership and cutting down the beautiful Redwood trees in Northern, California. His oppostion are a group of Quakers who feel that God gave them those trees for their church and do everything in their power to protect the trees from the money hungry businessman! The most outspoken of the group is of course a beautiful woman(Eve Miller), that Douglas falls for, and must decide between the trees and her. Also look for Edgar Buchanan as "Yukon". This one looks great on the DVD. The original technicolor is beautiful and the picture and sound quality are good.It also includes some biographical info on Kirk Douglas.
Last is "Vengeance Valley"(1951).This one stars Burt Lancaster as Owen Daybright, the "good brother"(how could you not be good with a name like that?), and Robert Walker as Lee Strobel his evil brother. Owen has spent his life covering up for Lee's mistakes. When Lee gets one of the local girls "in trouble",Lee puts the blame on Owen, her brothers come after him with a vengeance. He has to fight them off and take care of their vast cattle empire all in 83 minutes!Who else but Burt Lancaster can handle all this? The film was directed by Richard Thorpe(Jailhouse Rock) and also look for such notables as John Ireland, Hugh O'Brien, Ellen Corby, and Alan Hale Jr. This one also is a nice clear picture with good color and sound.Included is some biographical info on Burt Lancaster.
So saddle up for some Western Adventure..enjoy...Laurie
