Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars "Hurricane Express".......2007-06-10

Service on order was great. I am a "train buff", and I remember this seriel as a kid at Saturday Matinees. What a shame the DVD releasing company used such terrible source materials - a 16MM print instead of the 35MM original. Interesting to see production techinques from that early sound era, but the bad print quality I can not forgive when going to a medium as high quality as DVD. Gladly swap it out for a better print source DVD. I worked my way through University as a Theatre Projectionist, and went on to work in the motion picture industry. I have high standards! Any feed back from other purchasers/movie/train buffs?

2 out of 5 stars OK Serial, miserable video quality.......2007-05-08

This review pertains to the Alpha Video DVD, which clearly the previous review does not. The image quality of this DVD is about the worst I have ever seen and I therefore urge you NOT to buy this edition. The original print element is bad, and the video transfer looks worse than a VHS tape recorded on the slowest speed. I don't know how other editions compare, but I doubt they can be any worse. The serial is nothing special, although I might have enjoyed it more with a better quality DVD.

It took everybody out of their own little world - The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure - The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it...His performance as Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers" (1956) is ranked #23 on Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time...Of his many film roles, his personal favorite was that of Ethan Edwards from The Searchers (1956). Wayne even went so far as to name his son Ethan after that character...The inscription on the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to him in 1979 reads, simply, "John Wayne, American."...After meeting the late Superman star Christopher Reeve at the 1979 Academy Awards, Wayne turned to Cary Grant and said "This is our new man. He's taking over."...Turned down the role of Marshal Dillon on "Gunsmoke" (1955) because he did not want to commit to a weekly TV series. He recommended his friend James Arness for the role, and gave the on camera introduction in the pilot episode...I would like to be remembered, well...the Mexicans have a phrase, 'Feo fuerte y formal'. The Wrecker, a multiply-disguised master villain, continually sabotages and wrecks trains on the L & L Railroad to fuel the success of a competing airline service. In one of his earliest roles, John Wayne portrays aviator Larry Baker, whose father was killed in one of the "Wrecker's" train wrecks. He comes to the rescue of Gloria Stratton, whose father Frank is falsely accused of the crimes. They band together to track down the "Wrecker." Filled with death-defying action, stunts, and near-misses, this feature version of the serial is packed with high energy and excitement that surpasses many other films of the day.

1 out of 5 stars The Hurricane Express..........2006-09-01

      The Hurricane Express

This movie stars John Wayne with a lot of unknowns. It is a movie about planes trying to run the passenger train business out of business. Many of us have heard the term B movie. Well this perhaps maybe a Z movie. It is awful, the only way this movie could be worse is if you were first to watch a 3 minute intro by Leonard Molten, it's also 3 hours of a horrible movie. The only reason to own this move is if u are a John Wayne Fan as I am. It helps complete my collection and that's the only good thing I can say about it.

      The Video
Well when its not jumping its dark. When its not dark its hard to see. When its not hard to see its back to just being dark. It's a horrible transfer for a horrible movie.

      The audio
It's a mono track that skips jumps beeps and makes other sounds all thru the movie.

      The Extra
      Nothing.

Special footnote, actor John Wayne once said, "Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West - the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity."

5 out of 5 stars A THRILLER OF THE ROARING RAILS IN 12 CRASHING EPISODES!.......2003-09-21

Oscar winner John Wayne stars as pilot Larry Baker, who makes an unscheduled landing in a vain attempt to prevent a railway collision that kills his father. As a result, he is fired for disobeying orders. His mission now, is to find out who actually was responsible for the wreck of he hurricane express, and to hand out justice for the death of his father. A Classic...

4 out of 5 stars A very early non-western John Wayne serial from 1932.......2003-05-30

You have to go way back for this early John Wayne film; The Hurricane Express was actually a serial in 12 parts released in 1932. There aren't any cowboys or horses around for this adventure, but there's plenty of action. A baby-faced John Wayne plays an airplane pilot whose father, a train engineer, is killed when some fiend who calls himself "the Wrecker" causes the Hurricane Express to crash. Larry Baker (Wayne) swears that he will catch the man who killed father, but the Wrecker has a way of escaping time and again - this is due largely to the fact that he has a set of incredibly lifelike masks that allow him to pose as any number of characters, including Larry Baker. Baker's lady friend's father was "railroaded" (ahem) and sent to prison for embezzling from the company, and his recent escape puts him high on the list of suspects. Then there is the local airline boss who stands to profit from all of the railroad's troubles. Throw in a number of other likely suspects, and you've got a real riddle on your hands. Talk about action, though. The good guys and bad guys are constantly hopping from trains to cars to airplanes and back again. The very young Duke gets cold-conked on the head so many times I stopped counting, but you know John Wayne can't be stopped. All of this going to and fro, combined with the kind of film quality that naturally applies to a film from 1932, left me a little confused at times, and the whole deal with the masks felt a little Scooby Doo-ish, but overall I found The Hurricane Express a pretty entertaining experience.

2 out of 5 stars Good old fashioned cliff hanger series.......1999-04-08

This is an early cliff hanger series that we used to see in movie matinees with a new segment every week. The series includes sequences with a Ford trimotor airliner and some good railroad sequences. On the tape version I have seen the video quality is only fair and often poor. However,it is fun and worthwhile.
