Set prior to the start of the Civil War but after the South has seceded from the United States, Kansas Pacific centers on the efforts to build a railroad across Kansas toward the West Coast. Southern sympathizers attempt to sabotage the railroad construction efforts so Army Captain John Nelson (Sterling Hayden) is brought in to keep the project going. Captain Nelson must not only contend with the efforts of the saboteurs but also try to romance the railroad foreman's daughter, Barbara Bruce (Eve Miller). This film also features Clayton Moore, best known for his portrayal in films and on television of The Lone Ranger.

2 out of 5 stars This is no way to run a railroad.......2005-01-03

This production falls comfortably between poor and below average. The acting is only a little better than the plot deserves, the lead actors - Sterling Hayden and Barton MacLane - being let down by a poor script. The love angle to the story is indifferently supplied by Eve Miller.

The main "star" is the supposed railway, a military line under construction just before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Based loosely on the transcontinental railway that broke ground shortly before the outbreak of the War, the road in this film is intended as a supply line to the cavalry's western outposts. A rough bunch of Confederate spoilers makes several attempts to destroy it. Needless to say, they don't succeed. Actually, they didn't need to: the rails are laid in such a desultory fashion that it would have required the rest of the 19th century to finish the job.

The budget for this railway was even less than that for the movie. The small track-laying crew appears to have only one (little) locomotive and there's a lack of heavy lifting equipment. In one scene the engine and freight cars are blown up beyond repair in a narrow pass, blocking it. A short while later we see a maintenance crew rummaging around a few broken bent and twisted rails; the train has magically disappeared. The whole enterprise resembles a rather disorganized afternoon picnic, with none of the hustle and bustle of a genuine "end of track." There is much chucking about of dynamite, and that's another problem with this film: the stuff was not invented (by Nobel) until the War was over.

If you're looking for a western or a historical treatment of railways, skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Little "B" Railroad Western.......2006-06-07

You'll be surprised by this little "B" sleeper from Allied Artists. A low-key atmosphere and sincerity overcome its lack of big-name stars and small budget. Sterling Hayden underplays his role to good effect and this one sort of grows on you as it goes along.

Men are running into trouble trying to build the Kansas Pacific Railroad due to growing tensions between the North and South which will soon lead to Civil War. Quantrill (Reed Hadley) is behind most of the sabatoge and it is up to the new engineer the Army sends to get the job done and root out where the trouble is coming from.

John (Sterling Hayden) is met with doubt in his ability at first from the man currently in charge, (Barton MacLane), but soon wins his trust and support with his no-nonsense approach to finishing the job. His daughter Barbara (Eve Miller) is not so easily swayed but eventually an old-fashioned unspoken romance develops when she too begins to believe in John.

When the sabatoge escalates and lives are lost, it becomes a race against time to not only get the tracks laid, but keep the engines from being blown up. There are explosions and some gunplay before this sincere little western drama reaches its happy conclusion.

As "B" westerns go, this one is quite good and has a low-key mood and atmosphere that works. It doesn't try to be more than it is so is very enjoyable, rising above its origins as entertainment. A "B' gem.
