2 out of 5 stars Careers falling.......2006-05-01

The story is a bit thin. Audie England's character (Eve) escapes from some kind of prison - the kind where the prison keepers don't even know who they're keeping, and the kind with a high-tech alarm system with more holes than a Swiss cheese. Even with that kind of start, the strain on one's credulity just keeps getting worse as the movie rolls on.

The biggest attraction may be in the moments when Audie appears wearing only Audie - and I have to say she wears it well. Those scenes are much too brief to make up for the weaknesses elsewhere in the movie, though. I wouldn't run if I saw this movie being shown again, but I probably wouldn't pay much attention, either.

2 out of 5 stars Poor plot, poor acting, poor FX.......2005-08-11

Venus Rising is a thriller set in the near future, where an island prison has been abandoned by the authorities and the inmates left to starve. Years later, three inmates make an escape from the island and find themselves on Pacifica, an island paradise where bored rich people find stimulation in virtual reality. Murder and identity switching ensue, as the authorities hunt for the escapees.
This movie basically steals plot elements from Wild Palms and Strange Days and does a worse job than either of those two movies. For a start, the acting is weak, with a bunch of third tier talent like Billy Wirth and Costas Mandylor. Morgan Fairchild serves no purpose in this movie. The only actor with some salt was Audie England, whose only other roles seem to be in Zalman King type erotica.
This movie also obviously had a lousy budget. Even the scenes where they are meant to be entering virtual reality are hokey.

1 out of 5 stars Venus Rising.......2005-07-28

This film was a waste of time. I skimmed through looking for someone I was led to believe played in it, but did not!
I'd give it 0 stars if I could. The acting was pitiful, at best.

1 out of 5 stars dissapointing........2005-07-17

All i have to say is this movie was not very good period and even having Jessica Alba in it doesn't help as she's in the movie for like one scene that lasts maybe 2minutes. I'd pass on this movie.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with Jessica Alba.......2000-11-08

To some this movie will not appeal. Some might even go as far to say that it is completely beyond redemption because of its views of the future and its terrible plot line. But I say its got one huge redeming quality and that is Jessica Alba.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film; visually stunning and great acting, story........2000-01-05

This film (theatrical release 1988, video release date April 1999) will prove to be a favorite of Jeff Fahey fans, and general movie-goers alike. It was filmed in Australia, and is visually stunning. Story revolves around a teenage girl's life and the people and situations she encounters in turn of the century Australia. Her character, Alice May Richards (played by Tushka Bergen) grows up on a horse ranch; has to deal with the farm going bankrupt, her father's death, getting shipped off to the city away from the life and horses she loves. Meanwhile she meets Ben Creed (Jeff Fahey) a dashing, hardworking broker, who falls for her, but her attentions are focused on a macho and less interesting horseman on her ranch...I won't spoil it for you, but this movie is highly interesting for character development and the twists and turns of the plot. This was probably a huge hit in Australia...I have purchased this video a total of seven times for gifts since I originally viewed it in June of 1999. Excellent choice for young girls who are horse lovers...and a very excellent effort by Jeff Fahey as well. Again, the visual aspects of the beautiful countryside, the horses, characters costumed perfectly in turn of the century clothing, and great plot and all round acting makes this film a real winner! Enjoy! (Note: no nudity, or situations unsuitable for a G audience!) A real GEM!

    Description

Robert Altman presents teen angst with a twist. Based on characters from National Lampoon Magazine, O.C. and Stiggs aren't your average unhappy teenagers. They not only despise their suburban surroundings, they plot against it. They seek revenge against the middle class Schwab family, who embody all they detest: middle class. In a film armed with vicious satire and hilarious surprises, suburbia will never be the same.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Unknown Altman.......2007-01-10

Mostly unknown Altman that is a whole lot of fun, featuring a great Dennis Hopper working off of his Apocalypse Now character.

5 out of 5 stars Altman was brave, and never got the credit........2007-01-10

This is a freakin' funny film. If you have even half a sense of humor, see it.

1 out of 5 stars I will leave it to the critics to comment on the film itself........2006-03-13

All I want to say is that I can barely believe that no one has
commented on the atrocious transfer on the DVD. It looks like
a bad video on a TV screen glimpsed through a dirty window. It
is not even "barely watchable" - it is utterly unwatchable.

This may not be one of Altman's best, but surely it deserves
better treatment than this, if only for those of us who want
to be able to view this auteur's complete body of work. Whoever
produced this DVD ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I have bought both the US and UK disks in the hope that one
of them might be better than the other. No such luck - they
are both the same crappy junk. Money down the drain.

We've been had. And the thought of somebody actually making
money off selling this inferior product is distressing.

4 out of 5 stars Repeat Viewings Bring Out the Brilliance.......2006-01-14

O.C. and Stiggs is a pure gem. The other reviews give you background, but what needs to be emphasized is that this film is filled with Robert Altman's special layered dialogue. O.C. and Stiggs can be watched a dozen times and still the viewer will notice some little tidbit of cleverness that wasn't obvious the first time. Do yourself a favor and buy this film so you can watch it again whenever the mood strikes you.

3 out of 5 stars "Randall, how would you like to have more fun than you've ever had in your life?".......2005-11-20

Being fairly uncool and self involved in the early 80s, I hadn't read any of the National Lampoon magazines at the time, so I was completely unaware of the antics (or existence) of Oliver Cromwell 'O.C.' Ogilvie and Mark Stiggs, or the fact that a movie, titled O.C. and Stiggs, based off this material, had been released in 1987. After reading some helpful reviews of the film, I searched the internet to see if I could locate any of the original materials, and sure enough, the National Lampoon website has a detailed listing of all the stories, which I'd recommend checking out. Based off of stories written by Tod Carroll and Ted Mann (both writers for National Lampoon), and directed by Robert Altman (MASH, Nashville, Popeye), the film features Daniel Jenkins (Glory) and Neill Barry (Amityville 3-D) as the title characters, Oliver Cromwell 'O.C.' Ogilvie and Mark Stiggs, respectively. Also appearing is a lengthy list of notables including Paul Dooley (Strange Brew), Jane Curtin ("3rd Rock from the Sun"), Martin Mull (My Bodyguard), Dennis Hopper (My Science Project), Ray Walston (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Louis Nye (Harper Valley P.T.A.), Melvin Van Peebles (Jaws: The Revenge), Cynthia Nixon (Amadeus), Jon Cryer (Pretty in Pink), and Tina Louise, probably best known as Ginger, the movie star, from mid 60s television series "Gilligan's Island".

The film, set primarily in Scottsdale, Arizona, features two teenage miscreants named O.C. and Stiggs who have an affinity for lobster, floozies, and pranks (not necessarily in that order). The story, such that as it is, highlights their subversive activities against superficialities inherent within the realm of suburbia, their focus centering on a well to do family named the Scwabs, particularly the patriarch of the family named Randall Schwab (Dooley), their mortal enemy, who owns an insurance business, has contempt for all races but his own, and is just a real a-hole of the highest order. The movie relates activities taking place over one summer including the boys making ridiculously lengthy long distance phone calls to Africa (on Schwab's dime, of course), crashing Schwab's daughter's wedding to an Asian man named Tang, a pilgrimage to Mexico tubing down the Rio Grande (on tubes stolen from the tires of Schwab's cars) to see their performing idol King Sunny Ade, hijacking a local theater production, hosting a bogus charity event (complete with street people) at Schwab's `incredibly stucco sterile monstrosity' of a house while he's away, and so on...along the way we meet all kinds of unique individuals like Wino Bob (Van Peebles), who happens to reside in a bush and buys the boys alcohol, Sponson (Hopper), a shell shocked Vietnam Vet who maintains a heavily fortified outpost just outside the city, Grandpa 'Gramps' Ogilvie, a former police detective who spends his days relating the more gruesome aspects of his career at the most inopportune times when he's not eating eggs, huevos rancheros style, along with Schwab's family including his perpetually drunk wife Elinore (Curtin), and his spineless, idiot son Randall Jr. (Cryer)...all of which culminates into a 4th of July spectacular the likes of which few have ever seen...

If your familiar with Robert Altman's films, then you understand the story isn't so much the heart of the movie, but rather the characters, or, at least this seems to be the case in the small number of his films I've seen, the most memorable being MASH (1970). When it works, it works beautifully, but when it doesn't, it fails spectacularly, as is the case here...I think the main problem, besides Altman being the just the wrong choice for director for this type of material, is the fact it seemed like there were three distinctly different conceptualizations working in terms of what was expected from this movie, which, incidentally, wasn't released until a full three years after it was actually finished (apparently the studio disliked it so much they decided not to release it right away). I think the studio was looking for a run of the mill teenage comedy, which were prevalent at the time, the writers obviously would have wanted something much closer to the intent of their original work, and Altman, who despised the teenage comedy genre, took it upon himself to present a satire of the very genre he was hired to emulate. Subsequently, the writers, the studio, and the director seemed not to like the finished product very much (along with audiences and critics), and the movie ended up bombing abysmally. After watching the film, I'd agree with many that the movie is a spectacular failure, but an entertaining one when viewed in the right perspective, one involving a good amount of alcohol. Many of the characters and events within the original material seem to appear in some form or other (the script seems to borrow liberally from one, particular tale rather than the entirety), but the very offbeat, subversive, and darkly funny spirit appears not to have transferred over very well from the original material, in my opinion. It's hard to describe unless you've actually had a chance to read the original stories, which I'd recommend, but the main characters of O.C. and Stiggs just came off as, well, mean spirited, smarmy a-holes who were almost as bad as those they were against. One significant change was the inclusion on King Sunny Ade and His African Beats...apparently, the script had originally called for Clifton Chenier, but he was unavailable due to previous engagements, and Altman was partial to the stylings of King Sunny Ade, so there you go. I did like the supporting, oddball characters, especially the ones played by Ray Walston, Martin Mull, Louis Nye, and I think my favorite scene involved the boys, while in Mexico with their brain dead friend Barney, running into the drama teacher and their guidance councilor, the pair, both male, apparently involved in a discrete, south of the border getaway. All in all this is a very loose, unfocused, and seemingly poor adaptation that has its moments, but anyone looking for the a true, onscreen representation of that which appeared within the pages of National Lampoon will most likely be disappoint, perhaps even angry.

The widescreen (2.35:1), non-anamorphic picture comes through well, as does the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. There is one interesting special feature included in a featurette titled `Altman on O.C. and Stiggs' (7:59) where the director offers explanations, but certainly no apologies. Also included are previews for the films Christmas with the Kranks (2004), National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze (2003), National Lampoon's Going the Distance (2004), and New Best Friend (2002).

"I am the protector of the dead," he intones. But he will do more than play Grim Reaper to mortals who defy the tomb's sanctity. He wants to reclaim the woman he loves. Tony Curtis plays Dr. Mohassid, a reincarnated soul whose undying love has deadly consequences. Since his arrival, venemous serpents writhe, phantoms stalk and a certain young woman's nightmares erupt into even more frightful days. The tomb is open. Enter at your own risk!

    Customer Reviews:

Certainly not one of Tony's best efforts. Much of the script is laughable, but the story line is better than comparable low budget films from this period.

You know the plot. Ancient Egyptian Princess and Priest fall in love, break the rules, get burried alive only to be resurected when archeologists find the un-marked tomb. Like the original Karlof, this mummy looks pretty much normal once the bandages come off.

I can't give this one more than 2 stars, but it still has a spot in my movie cabinet!

2 out of 5 stars For Lana Clarkson fans only.......2001-12-01

An incredibly bad film, whose only redeeming feature is Lana Clarkson, in (and out of) some skimpy outfits. She's completely gorgeous, but even she can't save a disaster of a film. Buy Deathstalker instead.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2001-11-29

Although this movie had nothing at all to do with Barbarian Queen 1 & Had horrible props { the swords were cheap plastic toys}I thought this movie was great!!! Bad props that's all that lacked. It would have been better If Rick Hill made an appearance in the movie But all in all awesome movie Even Joe Bob Briggs, gave it 4 stars AND SO Do I.....Better than the first in many ways,
    a Must Buy

1 out of 5 stars WHY AREN'T ZERO STARS AVAILABLE FOR RATING??????.......1999-05-20

Maybe I should have known better, but hokey and horrible do not have to be the same. This is a four dollar movie in any department store.

3 out of 5 stars See it for the mud-wrestling and dungeon scenes.......1999-05-18

Fans of the first "Barbarian Queen" film will enjoy this film, too, for the same reasons they liked the first film: Lana Clarkson half-naked on a rack being tortured by an evil guy. In the first film it was a small man wearing thick glasses torturing her with a small needle. In this film its her evil brother torturing her by lowering her onto a bed of spikes (she's not actually lowered, just taunted a bit).

None of the characters from the first film are in the second film, and even Lana's character has a new name, so its not really a part of the first film's series but just some marketing trickery by the movie's salesmen. But it has Lana Clarkson in it and that's the real reason you'll want to watch this film.

Lana plays the queen of a kingdom, but is overthrown by her evil brother and forced to flee into the woods where she defeats the leader of a band of women warriors (pretty good cat-fight mud wrestling scene in which Lana end up topless but victorious). She leads the band in an attack against the evil brother's castle, but she is defeated and thrown in the dungeon. Bound to an upright rack, the brother recites some evil dialogue, rips off her top, and recites some more evil dialogue. Then a girl enters the scene and states that she will enjoy torturing people when she becomes queen. Lana launches a retort and is then lowered over a bed of spikes by the evil brother. Now, this part of the scene is pretty hokey, because the girl and the brother are leaning into the scene to see Lana's face, and you can tell that Lana is just leaning into the scene as well and isn't really suspended from the table. Oh well.

Anyway, the evil pair go off to dinner and Lana makes her escape (how she got out of the cuffs without falling into the spikes isn't explained) and tries to take a magic sceptre, the source of power in the kingdom. She's recaptured and thrown in the dungeon again, where the evil brother recites some more evil dialogue but doesn't really do anything. Still, I have to give credit to Lana for getting back up on the table again.

Moving ahead in the plot, a good knight rescues Lana and together with the band of women warriors they successfully defeat the evil brother and free the kingdom.

Best reason to get this film: Lana Clarkson's dungeon scenes, but feel free to fast-forward through the rest of the movie.

If I were a movie producer, I'd see if I could get Lana to do a third "Barbarian Queen" film (if she's still got the body for it). The plot would be something like this: Lana is queen of the kingdom and has a sister (played by Elizabeth Kaitan (aka Elizabeth Cayton)of "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity"). An evil queen, (played by Brinke Stevens, also of "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" and "Cyberzone") kidnaps the sister and throws her in the dungeon where she is tortured for information about the magic sceptre. Lana negotiates a deal for the release of the sister by surrendering herself to the evil queen. Lana is then thrown in the dungeon and tortured until the sister launches an attack on the castle and frees Lana. The evil queen is then thrown in the dungeon herself, so that the fourth movie (since my third movie idea is so successful they'd want to make a fourth) could be about the evil queen escaping and regaining her lost kingdom. Anyone with movie connections, feel free to take this idea and make it into a film. I'd be the first one in line at the video store!

3 out of 5 stars Lana Clarkson's dungeon scenes better than whole movie.......1999-05-18

This is marketed as the sequel to "Barbarian Queen", which wasn't much of a movie to begin with other than Lana Clarkson (who plays the title character) being strapped to a rack and tortured with a needle by a little man who wears thick glasses (this whole scene is done much better than any other scene in the "BQ" movie). Oddly, none of the characters from the first film are in the second film, and even Lana Clarkson's character has a new name. I believe this second film was supposed to be a whole different series, but the financers figured they could cash in on the "Barbarian Queen" moniker and draw in more fans. Oh well.

In short, Lana is overthrown as queen by her evil brother and is forced to flee into the woods, where she defeats the leader of a band of women warriors and becomes their leader (complete with cat-fighting mud-wrestling scene that ends with Lana topless but victorious). The women then attack the castle to free the people of the land, but they are defeated and Lana is thrown in the dungeon where the evil brother tries to get her to reveal the secrets of the magic sceptre (the source of power in the kingdom). This scene is as good as the dungeon scene in the first "Barbarian Queen" film, with Lana topless on a rack as her brother lowers her onto a bed of spikes. Seemed a bit ornate to me - why not just jab her with a single spike over and over until she talks? - and the end of the dungeon sequence is a bit hokey (you can tell that Lana is just leaning into the shot and is not really suspended from the table). But Lana does a pretty good job with what she's given.

Anyway, when the evil brother goes off to dinner, Lana effects her escape from the dungeon and tries to steal the sceptre, where she's then captured again. Sentenced to death by torture, she's thrown back in the dungeon. This scene isn't as long as the first dungeon scene and the evil brother doesn't do anything but recite some evil verbage, but it's still nice to see Lana on the rack again.

Ok, fast forward a bit here. A good knight decides to rescue Lana, and together with the band of women warriors they defeat the evil brother and save the land. Hooray.

As you may have guessed, this is a film that doesn't require much intelligence, and you can follow enough of the plot by keeping your finger on the Fast-Forward button until you get to Lana's action scenes, which is the reason you'll want to watch this film in the first place.

I also recommend you add to your library "Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity" which is better than the title would imply.

3 out of 5 stars Good but the title is a little confusing and misleading.......2004-04-07

Okay let me start off by explaining a little something about this movie. Even thought this is written by Jim Wynorski and is called Sorceress II it bears very little resemblence to the 1980's sword-and-sorcery flick Sorceress which was also written by Jim Wynorski. I think its a sequel to a different movie called Sorceress from the early 90's (also written by, you guessed it, Jim Wynorski.) So I'm not sure where this movie falls so keep that in mind.

Now on to the review. The premise here is half original half cliched. The story centers around a company which develops beauty products, but somehow wishes to use these products to take over the world (this plot point is mentioned in the beginning but pretty much dropped after that). The catch to this company is the fact that it is headed by a coven of witches/sorceresses (and at least one warlock), who in order to gain an immortal life, they must absorb the lifeforce of others (namely their employees) why they don;t do it to strangers and thereby avoid strange questions is beyond me. Enter a down-on-his-luck business man who takes a job that sounds too good to be true in a town called Coventy (subtle). He then encounters many women who not only are a little mysterious (and take to wearing pentagrams) are trying to seduce him. HE then decides to uncover the truth about his missing co-workers and predecessor. Thanks to the help of a few like-minde employees (one of which of course becomes the love interest, though the act is a little unbelievable). As things get unearthed, we soon find out that our protagonist is actually the son of a dead wizard who attempted to stand up to the coven before. With this knowledge in mind and the help of another Sorceress (who for some reason is fighting for good) our hero goes out to seek revenge. The movie then climaxes with one of the cheesiest spell battles I've ever seen in my life.

    (...)

Well I must say that the plot was okay and kept me intrigued throughout (though admittedly it was mostly becuase I was trying to make sense of the plot holes), and the nudity wasn;t as excessive as it seems (though it makes up at least ten minutes or so of the running time) and it comes pretty cheap. So if you're looking for a cheap low-budget tale about witches or are a fan of Sorceress I (though I'm not sure which film that is) then by all means pick it up. But of course this movies not for everyone and even if you like the genre don't expect too much
