No Ranger retires perpendicular.......2004-07-18

Nasty and corrupt Mayor Nard Lundy (Edward Andrews) is challenged by idealistic Jeff Rose (Ricky Nelson) in an upcoming election. Lundy has Sheriff Clyde Barnes (Jack Elam) rough the young upstart up some. Rose's visiting father-in-law, retired Texas Ranger Captain Oren Hayes (Pat O'Brien) sends an urgent telegraph to three of his former command (Walter Brennan, Chill Wills and Edgar Buchanan) to come to Boulder immediately and help him clean up the town.
THE OVER-THE-HILL GANG is a 1969 made-for-television movie that was popular enough at the time to lead to a sequel a year later. For old movie fans it's hard to beat the appeal of this veteran character actor laden movie. It's fun to see them play off each other and confront a situation that their advancing years have forced them to deal with more with guile than brute force. What's not so much fun is seeing them saddled with this tired, predictable plot.
Brennan and Buchanan shine brightest in this one; Brennan as the gun slinger who's lost a bit of speed on his quick draw and Buchanan as the scout who's eyesight has deteriorated to the point that he's drawing his guns on stuffed and mounted bears. With a better script, and a more delicate and penetrating examination of what it feels like to suddenly find yourself old and in the way, this one could have been a classic for the ages rather than an amusing piece of fluff.
The print transfer to dvd is so-so. Some of the night scenes are muddy and it's hard to make out what's happening. The dvd also comes with the Little Rascals' short "Hooky Spooky."
Fans of old movies should enjoy the veteran character actors in this, although they may agree that the folks in front of the camera in THE OVER-THE-HILL GANG deserved far better.

One more chance to see some ol' western stars.......2004-03-16

The technical part of this review refers to the Brentwood Home Video or BCI Eclipse version.

From the Aaron Spelling stable of TV movies comes this tale with Ricky Nelson (and his wife Kris Nelson) as an idealistic couple. Ricky is running for Mayor of a small western town against Edward Andrews who plays a corrupt town boss. Jack Elam is his Sheriff and Andy Devine is his Judge, both firmly entrenched in his back pocket.

Pat O'Brien comes to town as Ricky Nelson's father-in-law, a retired Texas Ranger who rounds up his old partners (Walter Brennan, Edgar Buchanan and Chill Wills)!!! Throw in Gypsy Rose Lee as the owner of the local saloon and you got yourself a pretty good (for TV) rip-snorting western. You know how it's going to play out, but watching the all these stars in action makes up for a sub-par script.

Unfortunately the transfer is from a well-used print that looks like it was recorded in long play mode. At times, scenes taking place at night are almost unwatchable. But the chance to see these stars of westerns in their later years is a treat you should not miss if you're a fan of the western genre.

Digital Gold Collection is a good copy of the movie........2006-05-09

There are many versions of this available and some are really lousy. I can vouch for the quality of the Unicorn version. It's not bad at all. The disc itself starts with a Leisure Time logo but Amazon lists it as a Unicorn release. There's no manufacturer info on the case it comes in but it does say Digital Gold Collection across the top. I uploaded a picture of it here. Now all I need is to find a good copy of Astaire's "Second Chorus" and I'm all set.

This copy of a vintage movie was so blurry you could not make out the faces of the actors. the sound track was buffled at best mostly unable to make out what they were saying...I've made better tapes! Total waste of money & I bet this was a bootleg tape !

Early scene almost sinks good Western comedy.......2004-10-25

In one early scene Edgar Buchannan's character is having a bachelor party with his also old buck friends. THe bachelor party is them all sitting in rocking chairs going back and forth! Fortunately once Buchannan meets up with his old pal Brennan things get better from there. Natalie Wood's sister Lana has a small but meaty role in this western dramedy too.

In this film sequel, a group of retired Texas Rangers(Walter Brennan,Andy Devine,Chill Wills and Edgar Buchanan)again set to clean up their small town. They also set up to rehabilitate the town drunk(Fred Astaire).Again,it's a great family western comedy!!

Great to have Astaire on DVD, but the print quality is low.......2003-01-24

Here are three Fred Astaire movies: Second Chorus, Royal Wedding, and The Over the Hill Gang Rides Again. The first movie, Second Chorus is a light, frivolous movie, with less of Astaire's dancing than is typical in his outings with Ginger Rogers. It's fun to see, but the print is fairly muddy, and sometimes it's hard to see detail. Royal Wedding is cute, and features some of Astaire's classic dance scenes--the hatrack dance and the dance on the ceiling number. The Over the Hill Gang Rides Again is a made-for-television movie featuring a number of familiar old faces from Westerns. It's an ok movie, and it's fun to see Astaire in the "fish out of water" kind of a movie. It's Fred Astaire's only Western, and although he plays a Texas Ranger, he's the most dandified Texas Ranger you'll ever see. Overall, the DVD compilation is fun, and the price is certainly low enough to overcome the print quality objection.

In this sequel to the Over-The-Hill Gang (1969), the old-time former Texas Rangers and comrades-in-arms (Brennan, Devine, Chill Wills, and Buchanan) join forces this time around to clean up their own hometown. The group decides to sober up an old Ranger buddy, a down-and-out drunk formerly known as The Baltimore Kid (Astaire), and restore his reputation. The Kid is restored to the job of town marshal of Waco, Texas, with the old Texas Rangers signing on as his deputies, in order to restore the town back to its former glory.
