Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove.......2007-06-08

This dvd starts off slow, but you get so attached to the characters. It is very authentic historically. You will laugh, cry, and think about the characters and story for a long time after viewing!!

5 out of 5 stars The real deal........2007-05-15

This is the second time I had purchased this Title. The first one had anything but the original actors. This one is the real deal and the movie is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Drama & Storytelling leaves you begging for more.......2007-04-29

this is without a doubt the best Western ever, and for Western Lovers, there's more, the whole Lonesome Dove series is worth owning. I recommend reading the books also,.... more than once

5 out of 5 stars Duval is an American treasure!.......2007-04-19

If I could have given this film 10 stars, I would have. This is an important film. Important in that every American should see it. The chemistry between Duval and Jones is superb. I watch the DVD about every six months or so. What can one say about Duval? His performance is the best he's ever done and puts him on my list of top five actors of all time. He's even said that this role was his finest. My only regret was that this was a TV mini series and not eligible for Oscar consideration. If it had been Duval would have walked off the stage with his second Best Actor statue. Please do not miss this.

5 out of 5 stars one of the greatest westerns adapted from a great novel.......2007-04-10

luckily this screenplay was not scripted by the author himself like 'dead man's walk', so all the unnecessary non-stop yammering of gus from page one until he died was so smartly omitted that making this 'lonesome dove' movie one of the greatest westerns ever made into movie. wonderful cast, terrific performance by all the actors in it. great screenplay, wonderful and appropriate sound track lingering behind, floating up in time to deepen the feeling of every specific moment. duvall did a better-than-oscar-nomination performance, amazingly made that unforgettable character alive and became a larger-than-life image. tommy lee jones was also the best choice playing call's role. wonderful cinematography footage and settings, not one inch wasted or misplaced.

Louis L'Amour's easy voice with its gentle rhythm sets the tone and pace of the film in a spoken introduction to this loping, rambling three-hour-plus TV-movie adaptation of his novels The Daybreakers and Sackett. Sam Elliot stars as the elder Sackett, a nomad hunting and trapping in the mountains who happens upon an ancient treasure. Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage are his younger siblings, forced to leave home to avoid a Hatfield and McCoy situation. As the Sackett brothers wind their way across the Midwest prairies and mountains we join them on cattle drives and gold hunts, in gunfights and fistfights, and in a climactic showdown as they find their place in the world. This 1979 film rambles and meanders like a lazy river winding through a beautiful landscape of peaks and plains and forests, punctuated by the occasional gunfight and enlivened by a story that celebrates both the open range and the taming of the towns. Elliot looks almost young but flashes his savage eyes behind a thick black beard, while Selleck's easygoing manner is backed up with a stony-faced determination. The excellent cast includes a veritable who's who of Western character actors: Glenn Ford, Ben Johnson, Gilbert Roland, Gene Evans, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, L.Q. Jones, Mercedes McCambridge, and Pat Buttram. Followed in 1982 by The Shadow Riders, which reunited the three stars and even a few members of the supporting cast in a tale of three different brothers. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars "You play the harp, mister? You keep pushin, you'll end up learnin'.".......2007-07-08

Warning: SPOILERS scattered all over.

To this day, Louis L'Amour remains my favorite western wordsmith. And, amongst his many protagonists, my preference lies with the Sackett family. Which leads me to this two-part television mini-series. In 1979, Louis L'Amour's THE SACKETTS came aroaring to the small screen and brought to gritty realization some of my favorite Western characters of all time. There are 17 Sackett novels in all (19, if you count minor roles by a Sackett in BENDIGO SHAFTER and in DARK CANYON), and the mini-series chose to base itself on two early novels, SACKETT and THE DAYBREAKERS. Screenwriter Jim Byrnes had to somehow combine the two books into one cohesive screenplay and, thus, had to make some changes. But it's all good as Louis L'Amour read the screenplay and gave his blessing. In fact, L'Amour provides the opening voice-over intro for Parts 1 & 2.

So, the plot: After fatally gunning down a feuding man, young Tennessee gunfighter Tyrell Sacket (Jeff Osterhage) hightails it to the untamed west, trailed and then accompanied by his level-headed older brother Orrin (Selleck). First hiring on as cowhands in a cattle drive to Kansas, Tyrell and Orrin then make their way to New Mexico. In Santa Fe, they get caught up in a bitter feud between a hidalgo, whose people have long held the territory, and a land-grabbing Anglo encroacher named Jonathan Pritts, who aims to push the Mexicans out. With Pritts bent on achieving his goal come hell or high water, it's only a matter of time before them hillbilly boys from Tennessee find cause to slap leather.

Meanwhile, William Tell Sackett (Sam Elliott), a Civil War veteran and the oldest Sackett brother, gets drawn into a slanted poker game and has to kill a cheatin' cardsharp, an act which promises dire consequences for Tell. Weeks go by and Tell is now prospectin' for gold and finds himself fending off an unkempt but plucky girl, greedy varmints, and grim-lookin' folks bent on a reckonin'. Undermanned and outgunned, Tell looks to be in a spell of trouble. But, then again, when you fight one Sackett, well, you fight 'em all.

There've been quite a few movie renditions of L'Amour's novels, including the pretty great HOW THE WEST WAS WON, the little known but still nifty THE BURNING HILLS (with Tab Hunter), and THE SHADOW RIDERS, which reunites Elliott, Selleck, and Osterhage. But, to me, the finest L'Amour film adaptation is THE SACKETTS. At 3 hours and 20 minutes long and shifting back and forth between the two story arcs, the film captures the personalities of the three Sackett brothers and conveys a certain down and dirty realism, all the while espousing that old-fashioned Western code of honor and delivering its share of frontier justice. The sets are peopled by actors who appear genuine in their patina of dust and grime. In striving for an authentic depiction, the filmmakers had to fight just to keep the horse dung intact on the dusty streets (the movie backers were appalled). Present also is the authentic-sounding, colloquial frontier speak which, naturally, heavily sprinkles L'Amour's books.

Sam Elliott has his character down pat, a natural as the "rawboned and ugly lookin'" Tell Sackett, with his tangled beard and ferocious handlebar mustache and feral, ill-tempered eyes. So convincing is Elliott as the laconic Tell that it's almost a surprise whenever he parts his lips to speak. Tom Selleck, still one year away from his iconic, star-making turn as Thomas Magnum, had to come in 5 times before he was signed on. As Orrin Sacket, the most erudite and learned of the three brothers, Selleck brings to the screen his charm, warmth, and heartthrob smile. Orrin supposedly can "talk a squirrel out of a walnut tree" or "a pump handle into believing it was a windmill." And, as embodied by Selleck, one can fair believe it. Little known Jeff Osterhage does just fine as the shy and earnest, but oh-so-deadly Tyrell Sackett, who, along with the legendary Barnabas Sackett, is one of my all time favorite L'Amour creations.

The supporting cast is uniformly solid, with veterans Glenn Ford and Ben Johnson as standouts. Ford adds depth to the canny Tom Sunday, who starts out as Orrin and Tye's mentor but eventually metamorphoses into a bitter and hard-drinking man. The grizzled Johnson exudes experience and world-weary wisdom as Cap Rountree, whose "wrinkles are war maps." Old oater reliables Jack Elam and Slim Pickens ride up as the vengeful minded Bigelow brothers.

While there is a smattering of action throughout, which culminates in the three brothers engaging in a furious shootout at the livery stable, the movie takes its time with its thoughtful, wide ranging character development. It pays off later as I feel the saddest part of the film is actually the downspiraling turn of once friend and ally Tom Sunday and his inevitable fate. In the relatively short passage of time covered by the film, Orrin and Tye grow from raw Tennessee boys to adults who've planted roots and become men of means and responsibilities. However, from beginning to end, the grim-visaged Tell Sackett is seemingly immutable, although he seems to have gained a lady friend at the end there. While, in my opinion, Orrin and Tye's story is more engrossing, Tell's story arc is noteworthy in that it bespeaks the often solitary life preferred by a certain hardy breed of men who lived back then, when the country was spacious enough to give a man room to breathe.

There are several highlight moments which I savor. There is Tye's showdown with Carney. Tell's shaving demo with the wicked-looking Arkansas toothpick. Tye overcoming his shyness with the hidalgo's daughter. Tell facing down Kid Newton, a would be gunfighter. There is Tom Sunday's last stand. And the climactic shootout between the Sacketts and the Bigelows.

Part One of the mini-series is on the first disc. The 2nd disc has the conclusion, as well as a 12-minutes-long featurette "The Sacketts Go West" which presents fairly informative interviews with Jeff Osterhage and writer Jim Byrnes.

With TNT foremost, but also other cable networks, having championed the movie western down thru the years, here's hoping Ted Turner or whoever sees fit to adapt more of L'Amour's work, and specifically, the Sackett books, and, even more specifically, SACKETT'S LAND (with Barnabas Sackett) and THE SACKETT BRAND (with Tell Sackett and a passel of other Sacketts). Here's hoping.

This was not the complete series. Editing left a major hole in the story line. I would strongly suggest getting the full length version.

5 out of 5 stars Brother Protects Brother!.......2007-05-30

This movie is so great because you would think that these men are really brothers! It has a family oriented theme. Each brother goes their separate way to do what they want. But through the trials of life they end up back together each one protecting the other. It shows that family is very important!

4 out of 5 stars The Sacketts.......2007-05-07

Good Western with good actors and enjoyable storyline. If you like Westerns then this is one to have in your library!

5 out of 5 stars The Sacketts DVD.......2007-03-09

I read all 16 of the Louie LaMour Sackett books. I am not a western reader. My brother-inlaw got me started and couldn't get enough so decided to see the DVD which the action is slower than the books, but, was very close to the story. They had Mr. LaMour speak about the movie. He was there during the making of the movie and wanted it to be like it was during that time period. Please read his series of Sacketts before viewing the DVD. aLSO, READ HIS BIOGRAPHY. He was a very speacial man. He died shortly after finishing the biography.

There are unmistakable pleasures to an old-fashioned Western, and Crossfire Trail has 'em. Tom Selleck has a lean, weathered face that sits nicely atop a horse and beneath a broad-brimmed hat; he plays a canny cowboy who's come to make good on a promise to a dying man and ends up caught between a beautiful woman (Virginia Madsen) and a wicked man in black--a couple of them, actually. Crossfire Trail has just about every element you could ask for (a Sioux war party, a cruel hired gun, a shootout in the street, even a cattle stampede), but it spins them out with such clean efficiency that you can't help but enjoy it. Directed skillfully and with heart, Crossfire Trail will satisfy any Western fan. Based on the novel by Louis L'Amour; also featuring Wilford Brimley and Mark Harmon. --Bret Fetzer

Description

A restless wanderer makes a promise to a dying friend to help the man's widow and daughter hold onto their ranch in the lush but lawless Wyoming Territory. But when oil is discovered on the land, the unsuspecting hero must contend not only with the two women who are suspicious of his motives, but also with ruthless men plotting to seize the ranch. Based on the novel by Louis L'Amour.

Tom Selleck was born to be a "Western" star. Excellent movie! I highly recommend it to any fan of western genre films.

5 out of 5 stars Great western!.......2007-01-22

Based on a Louis L'Amour novel, Tom Selleck is convincing as a cowboy named Raif who keeps a promise to a fellow sailor, Charles Rodney, by helping his widow hang on to her ranch and keep an eye on the widow as well. But a rich scoundrel has plans to talk the widow into marriage and get the ranch for himself. What he doesn't tell her is that he's responsible for her husband's death. Things get real tense for Raif and his friends as the expose the rich man for the cheating liar he is. A well written screenplay adaptation and lovely scenery. The dialogue is also superb (I especially love the Irishman's jokes).

4 out of 5 stars Another great Western from TNT and Tom Selleck.......2006-11-04

This is the second of three outstanding Westerns that Tom Selleck filmed for TNT between 1997 and 2003. Selleck revisited his early Louis L'Amour, TV-Western roots with "Crossfire Trail" and also re-teamed with director Simon Wincer, who directed Selleck's best big-screen effort - "Quigley Down Under" - as well as the all-time classic Western "Lonesome Dove". The result is an excellent film that, while breaking no new ground, contributes to the rich mythology and legacy of the American cowboy.

Selleck plays Rafe Covington who, at the beginning of the film, promises a dying friend that he will take care of the friend's wife and ranch. Selleck and two partners set out to do just that, and they add a new friend from the nearby town, played by Wilford Brimley, shortly after their arrival. The film is predictable: the widow is suspicious of Rafe's motives, the town bad guy has been wooing the widow in order to get at her land, the bad guy hires a hit man to eliminate Rafe, and so on. And yet, even though the viewer can see right through the plot to the end of the film, every element is so well handled that it is a pleasure to watch the movie.

I read several articles just before the film was released about the painstaking efforts made to have authentic costumes, props, sets, etc., and I must say that the filmmakers' efforts certainly paid off. The film is set in Wyoming, but was filmed in Alberta, Canada, which gives the film some of the best mountain vistas in a Western since the real Grand Tetons were featured in "Shane".

There is one small negative element in the film, which is why I couldn't quite bring myself to rate it a 5, and that is occasional strong profanity. I realize that real cowboys weren't always the most genteel people in their society, and I know that our modern society tolerates a lot of profanity; however, in a movie that continually emphasizes honor and integrity, profanity seems unusually out of place. There are DVD players and devices available that filter out profanity; if you are like me, then you can simply get such a player or device and still enjoy this first-rate Western.

5 out of 5 stars Crossfire Trail.......2006-08-28

I bought this dvd because it starred Tom Selleck and was directed by Simon Wincer. It lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed the "all man and a yard wide" portrayal of the men and the countryside in this film. It helps that it ends the way we would expect. When life was simple and uncomplicated and people lived up to their word in deed and action. I would buy anything with Tom Selleck and directed by Simon Wincer as long as it was an old western setting.

Conagher is classic western penned by the phenomenol Louis L'Amour. It's a movie my husband and I have watched every time it came on tv. It was a must have movie to own so I was delighted to find it on Amazon. This is a movie you simply cannot forget about a hero who believes in right and has the courage to support his beliefs, despite cattle rustlers who threaten his livelihood as well as his life. Then crank up the excitement with adding a beautiful widow (Katharine Ross, Sam Elliott's real life wife)whom Conagher tries to resist, yet cannot forget and you have western romance at it's finest.

5 out of 5 stars Western Movies.......2007-03-09

Once again, Sam Elliott does a super acting job in this entertaining film of life in the Old West. Katherine Ross was excellent as a widowed stepmother with two stepchildren making her own way in the middle of nowhere.

5 out of 5 stars Louis L Amor and Sam Elliot are a great team!.......2007-02-09

I have had this movie on VHS for quite some time and
just recently purchased the DVD. This movie tells a great story while revealing L Amor's view of the range cowboys morality. There simply are not enough good westerns being made anymore. This is a great western. I would highly recomend any western that is derived from a Louis L Amor novel.

5 out of 5 stars Conagher.......2007-01-22

Sam Elliott at his best ... again ... and Katharine Ross is as natural to his character as one could ask for.
If this couple don't form their own production company they are missing a good bet.

5 out of 5 stars conagher.......2007-01-10

If one likes old westerns, especially written by Louis Lemore, it is excellent and so is the actors, especially Sam Elliot and Katherine Ross.

Tom Selleck is at his iconic best in this made-for-cable remake of Monte Walsh, a poignant Western about the passing of an American age and the people attached to it. Selleck plays the title character, a career cowboy whose rhythms are aligned with the seasons and the annual herding of cattle from Wyoming to Texas. Faithful to his ways, loyal to his best friend (Keith Carradine), and satisfied with his part-time romance with an ailing, aging saloon girl (Isabella Rosselini), Walsh is happy until his 1890s world rapidly unravels. Eastern corporations are buying up land and shutting down ranches; trains are shuttling livestock faster than an army of cowhands. Walsh can't accommodate the future, and those closest to him are moving on. Director Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove) masterfully balances the epic and elegaic, Selleck is perfect as a fading footnote to history, and Monte Walsh becomes a universal tale of loss and integrity. --Tom Keogh

Description

Times change, Monte Walsh doesn't. For him, being a cowboy isn't a job, it's a life. And that's something the fenced-in, corporate-bean-counting ways of the onrushing 20th century must never alter. Tom Selleck plays Monte, struggling to continue the life he knows while seeing the new era nudge the cowboy way toward history's dustbin. Lonesome Dove Emmy winner Simon Wincer directs this Western featuring a superb supporting cast and based on a novel by the author of Shane.

4 out of 5 stars Moving tribute to the real cowboys........2007-02-25

This is not a shoot-em-up Western. If that is what you are after, stop reading right here. What this is, is a real heartfelt tribute to the cowboy. The genuine article cowboy. In particular, it charts a group of cowboys through the decline of the golden age of the cowboy, near the end of the 19th Century. Almost the whole of the first half of the movie, there is no plot to speak of, just character exposition building up the picture of the life and character that these men had. Nothing is rushed, and yet it is never dull, thanks to an intelligent script. There are humorous moments and great lines, but plenty of pathos and melancholy too, as the characters all deal with the end of an era in their own ways. We see the cowboy-turned-outlaw, the cowboy-turned-storekeeper, the cowboy-turned-floor sweeper... but most of all we see the cowboy turned into legend. As the plot kicks in, there is nothing contrived about it, but it all feeds into the central idea of examining what men do when their purpose is taken away from them.
The movie benefits from some great performances from some classic character actors such as William Devane and Barry Corbin, as well as a brilliant star turn from Tom Selleck who has never been better. It also benefits from the stunning scenery - ironically not in Wyoming as the movie suggests, but shot in Canada. The sweeping vistas, free of any trace of civilization, set against a backdrop of the Rockies, are stunning and superbly photographed.
What pulls this above it's TV-movie-of-the-week origins is the sincerity poured into it by all concerned, and not least by the prolific director Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under... and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles! ) and executive producer Tom Selleck. This fills the movie with those little, almost subliminal moments which make it feel real.
The result is no classic big screen film, but a perfectly judged and understated homage to a bygone era. It leaves us with the notion, that though the golden age is over, there will always be real cowboys.

4 out of 5 stars Can't be a cowboy forever.......2007-01-10

In this classic style western, the main character is faced with a changing world that seems to be intruding on the life he has chosen to live. Despite the innevitable - that he will one day succumb to progress - the story follows him on through life but never seems to resolve the assertion by another character that you cannot be a cowboy forever. It seemed to be just a pleasent story of one who fights progress but never resolves an answer for himself. Still, the scenery is beautiful and Mr. Selleck does a fine job as the quintessential cowboy as usual.

5 out of 5 stars Know how Monte Felt.......2006-12-18

As another man said, the plot has been explained by others pretty thoroughly, and as I went through these reviews a gentleman from Nevada put a different spin on his particular review; as a third generation cowboy he used this film to teach a city boy why he his the way he his. I didn't do that. Well, sorta.
I am a fourth generation rancher and cowhunter in Florida (used to be a top five beeve cattle state) and will be the last. Not because I lack children, but rather because in less than two decades my county has turned form ranchland to suburbs and native Crackers and cowhunters such as myself have become a small and declining minority in our own land. I have become Monte Walsh, as has just about everyone I grew up with.

I caught this film on TNT and actually welled up a little. When it came out I snatched it up and took it down to the local drinking hole on "John Wayne Night" (we watch a Western and toast the Duke) and convinced the bartender to put it on. She's a sucker for Selleck. I had also invited a batch of my Snowbird (PC for Yankees) pals to sit in. When the movie was over the place was real quiet, then a old timer stood up and said "A toast to all us fence riders!" It was a dang good toast. It was kinda quiet for the rest of the night, but everyone congratulated the choice; it summed us all up. We may be dying out, a bit bitter about it, but by God we'll go out with dignity. As for my Northern pal's reactions, well as the Nevadan's boss said: "Now I get it."

5 out of 5 stars Selleck's third TNT Western is a poignant goodbye to the cowboy way of life.......2006-11-04

This 2003 remake of "Monte Walsh" was Tom Selleck's third (but hopefully not last) Western for TNT, and it is probably the most stirring film tribute to the end of the Old West and the cowboy way of life. This is saying quite a bit as some fine Westerns like "The Wild Bunch", "The Shootist", and (even more recently) "Open Range" as well as other movies have dealt with the changes resulting from progress as the U.S. was about to enter the twentieth century.

Other reviewers have covered the plot line in great detail already, so I won't retread that ground. Suffice it to say that, while Selleck's Monte Walsh is the hero of the picture, he is portrayed with character flaws intact as well. Montelius Walsh loves three things in life: horses, women, and drinking (and the order of these things changes at different times in his life). He is stubborn, afraid to commit to Martine (his favorite prostitute whom he does seem to love), and refuses to change. He is also hard-working and loyal to his friends, especially his best buddy Chet (played by Keith Carradine), and these qualities are what make his character heroic and the storyline affecting.

I'm convinced that if Selleck had starred primarily in Westerns throughout his film career, then his movie success would have dwarfed his "Magnum P.I." role. The TNT Westerns, along with his three previous Westerns dating back to 1979's "The Sacketts", establish him as a premier cowboy actor. "Monte Walsh" is the finest of those efforts to date, and it is to be hoped that Selleck will 'saddle up' again soon; perhaps he'll even reunite with Sam Elliott with whom he starred in his first two made-for-TV Westerns and who has also made some first-rate Westerns for TNT.

Watch this one. It's an elegiac tribute to the passing of the Old West and the American cowboy. May both continue to live on in films!

Somewhat sad as the lead characters have a difficult time giving up their lives as cowboys on the open range.

Cromwell, Oklahoma, 1924: an oil boomtown full of saloons, cathouses, mud-and-crude-oil streets, bootleg whisky, and gun-toting roughnecks. Technology had overpassed the Old West, in the form of Model T's and oil rigs, but the mentality had stayed much the same. Add to that a population that's a bit tweaky from a combination of cocaine and morphine that had been going around, and you have a recipe for trouble. Enter Marshall Bill Tilghman, a contemporary of Wyatt Earp. Tilghman had made a silent film, The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws, and on the strength of his reputation had been called into service as chief of police in the hopes of restoring order to a lawless community. In this fact-based story, Sam Elliott plays Tilghman, a larger-than-life character who was one of the last of a dying era. Many Prohibition agents became renegades in the '20s; Tilghman's nemesis was Wiley (Arliss Howard), a rogue agent strung out on drugs and dealing in bootleg liquor himself. Howard's performance is as overwrought as Elliott's is restrained; together the two offset each other well. The flinty Elliott brings a measure of warmth to his role, especially in his relationship to his wife and kids; he's perfectly cast as the man on the cusp of a new age. As a modern-era Western, You Know My Name rises well above its made-for-cable roots to stand as a good character study and action picture. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

In six months, the population of Cromwell, Oklahoma, has climbed from 500 to 10,000. Boom times have come to the oil-rich town. So has a new breed of criminal. You Know My Name is the fact-based story of Bill Tilghman, a lawman and former partner of Wyatt Earp confronted by an emerging era when outlaws run whiskey instead of cattle and are likely to tote a tommy gun as carry a six-gun. An ideally cast Sam Elliott plays Tilghman, whose life takes on a newfangled wrinkle of its own. Tilghman makes a moving picture of his Old West exploits; and the success of that silent film, The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws, spreads his reputation like a brushfire. But that reputation may mean nothing to a thug (Arliss Howard) who hides behind a badge.

4 out of 5 stars You Know My Name.......2007-01-22

I'm a Sam Elliott fan ... and this was a good movie, but perhaps not in keeping with the other fine films that he has appeared in, such as The Quick and the Dead, or Connagher, where his abilities to portray a specific type of
character really showed up well. I think his portrail of a real life character in You Know My Name, sort of limited
what he could put into the role ... and of course, nobody likes to see the good guy get killed, even though the bad guy that did the killing eventually gets his in the end. Reminds me of John Wayne in the Cowboys ... the film wasn't so much about Wayne's character as it was about the young boys, and of course when the Duke bit the dust the film was really over ... ditto Elliott in this role.

3 out of 5 stars Another fine acting job by Sam Elliot.......2007-01-16

Well done portrayl by Sam Elliot of noted law man Bill Tilghman. Gritty and realistic but less action than most of Sam's western films.

4 out of 5 stars Sam Elliot at his usual.......2007-01-10

My interest in Tihlman arises from his connection with Louis L'Amour. He is supposed to have taught the young Louis and his elder brother how to use a six gun.

I was disappointed that the film only focussed on the last six to twelve months of Tihlmans life. That said the story and production are such that this is a DVD worthy of getting.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2007-01-05

This movie is not worth Sam Elliot. I was very dissapointed, I will most likely thow it away.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2006-11-02

As an Oklahoman, I remember thinking it was about time that Bill Tilghman had gotten his due when it came to a film about him. (I'd like to see Matt Braun's other book about him filmed.) I remember people in Oklahoma raising Cain, due to the fact it wasn't filmed in OK. However, if they don't make allowances to the film companies, it isn't going to happen. Some people complained about this and that when it came the the accuracy of the film, but this is based on a historical novel, aka fiction. It's not supposed to be 100% accurate. What is does do though, is entertain. Sam Elliot is perfect as Bill Tilghman, and I long for more films like this.

Purgatory is a down-and-dirty Western with a twist The Twilight Zone's Rod Serling would have loved. A band of 19th-century desperadoes, led by the monstrous Blackjack Britton (Eric Roberts), takes a wrong turn while fleeing a posse and rides into an otherworldly, off-the-map town called Refuge. Sedate, almost repressed, and guarded by an unarmed sheriff (Sam Shepard), Refuge is a weird haven of hospitality with no jail, a literate shopkeeper (J.D. Souther), an erudite dandy of a doctor (Randy Quaid), a restless deputy (Donnie Wahlberg), and a beautiful young woman (Amelia Heinle) with no apparent family. In short order, Blackjack figures Refuge is his for the plundering. But the youngest of his gang, the innocent Sonny (Brad Rowe), slowly realizes the town's residents are, in fact, dead legends of the American West--Wild Bill Hickok (Shepard), Doc Holliday (Quaid), Jesse James (Souther), among others--spending a violence-free interim before being taken to Heaven (or Hell if they fail). A purely fun if slightly hokey piece of fanciful adventure, Purgatory's colorful cast plays the whole thing straight and gives this made-for-cable film (directed by Uli Edel of Last Exit to Brooklyn) some exciting, six-gun grit and emotional authenticity. --Tom Keogh

Description

Between somewhere and nowhere in the untamed West is the small town of Refuge. There, neither the sheriff nor his deputy carry a sidearm. There's no jail either, because shooting, carousing and bad blood are not in the town's character. What peaceful folks live there? Wild Bill Hickok. Doc Holliday. Jesse James. Billy the Kid. All long dead. All mysteriously given a chance to undo their violent pasts in Purgatory. All put to a stern test when Blackjack and his ornery gang ride into town.

I must admit that I was pleasently surprised at the quailty of this movie, which features all the elements that make up a great movie. Starting with an interesting story line, great acting and action sequences, and a number of special moments wonderfully esentuated with moving music.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie for TV.......2007-05-07

It would be hard for me to give this movie more than a three, since it is in the movie category and thus is competing with truly classic westerns such as, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. That being said, it is a good movie when you consider that it was made for TV. An entertaining western which has some great actors and an amusing plot. If I was to compare it to other TV movies, only, then I would say that it rated a strong 4.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the movie, " Purgatory.".......2007-03-23

Interesting movie with a bit of Romance.., of course, as in most westerns, the heroes. Wild Bill Hickock, Doc Holiday, Jesse James, and of course, Billy the Kid. And of course the villian, Black Jack...
Very good movie. I've watched it several times already.

Thanks!

Often when genres combine in unexpected ways the result is less than stellar, but this is not the case with Purgatory. Combining all the drama and bravado of your typical western with a supernatural spin, Purgatory brings together many of the wild west's greatest heroes for one last hurrah. A beautifully imagined and produced piece of cinema highly reminicent of Deadlands: The Weird West, Purgatory is definately worth the price and should be added to any collection.

Not to be confused with Sam Raimi's flamboyantly stylized Western of the same name, this made-for-cable adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel is a lean, taut pioneer adventure set in the wilderness of the northern Midwest. Sam Elliott, sporting his trademark bushy mustache and eyebrows so thick they keep the rains off his face, stars as the mountain man and tracker Con Vallian. Tom Conti is Scottish storekeeper Duncan McKaskel bringing his wife Susanna (Kate Capshaw) and son from Pennsylvania to a homestead in Wyoming. When a scraggly gang (led by the wonderfully sleazy Matt Clark) marks the family as an easy target, Vallian makes himself their gruff guardian angel, partly out of attraction to Susanna ("You're a handsome woman," he likes to repeat). Pride, jealousy, and rivalry make Duncan and Vallian uneasy allies and Conti's musical lilt is a marvelous contrast to Elliot's gravely drawl. Capshaw is somewhat colorless but comes to life in a surprising explosion of angry violence. The beautiful landscape culminates in a stunning meadow where the homesteaders find their cabin, a location that must be the closest thing to heaven on Earth, but for the devils still on their trail. --Sean Axmaker

Description

In 1876 Wyoming, the gun is the only law. And for Duncan and Susanna McKaskel (Tom Conti and Kate Capshaw), newly arrived settlers beset by outlaws, rugged frontiersman Con Vallian (Sam Elliott) is the only hope. From the book by famed Western author Louis L'Amour, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD is a rousing adventure. It shares tried-and-true ingredients of those sagebrush sagas: a tale of peaceable folk driven to action under the guidance of a mysterious stranger.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Quick and the Dead, Sam Elliott.......2007-06-24

This movie, The Quick and the Dead starring Sam Elliott should not be confused with The Quick and the Dead starring Sharon Stone. How these movies ended up with the same title is a mystery to me.
My review is on The Quick and the Dead starring, Sam Elliott.
This western has action, romance, historical fiction, beautiful scenery, and the most rugged, handsome, cowboy ever, complete with his great horsemanship skills and own stunts. Sam Elliott is almost like a "guardian angel" who can speak the Sioux language and protects a single family who is traveling out west from danger when it's least expected. Good story line, the bad guys are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Elliot was .......2007-04-12

born to be a cowboy! Lots of action, lots of bad guys getting their due and at least one lady being rescued!

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Louis L'Amour Western.......2007-01-10

Sam Elliott played his part, as always, with great "presence" and appeal!
The story was layed out and poceeded immediately without a lot of non-essential acting on everyone's part. We found it very good and entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who like a good western with a bit of humor, romance and typical Louis L'Amour.

3 out of 5 stars A favorite cowboy in a disappointing western.......2006-12-17

Sam Elliot is one of my favorite cowboys yet he suffers from a story here that does not fit his usual noble toughman image. He is not the clear heroic character but instead one who seems bent on wife-stealing. His motives for helping the family he finds under siege are clearly self-seeking and only in the end does he give any indication otherwise. If you are a classic L'Amour western fan, this will likely be a disappointment and a confusion to you. It may be more to the "real-life" type but myself, I watch movies to escape real life, not to be reinforced in my cynicism. Still, Mr. Elliot's portrayal of a difficult and disappointing character saves this one from a less than mediocre rating.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Elliott - Yum!.......2006-11-10

Love Sam Elliott; even when the material isn't tops, He is! This one is really good!

5 out of 5 stars What a western romance!.......2007-04-29

This movie is so moving you feel everything the characters feel. I watched this movie three times when I first sawit.I taped it so I could skip past the commericals that are so distracting to the viewer. The story was so believeable and I loved the chemistry between Daily and Watts. They should team up again. I just really loved it so much I had to buy a new copy. If you like made for Hallmark movies you will love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars The outsider.......2007-03-31

I loved this movie. I did not think I would even like it. I am glad to say I was wrong, wrong, wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!.......2007-02-15

I enjoy westerns and this one was really good. Plus, Timothy Daly was great in this role. Also, Naomi Watts was in this and this was before King Kong. This would be a great buy for any movie lover.

5 out of 5 stars The Outsider.......2007-01-29

I was pleased with the quality of the DVD, and the timely manner that it arrived.

4 out of 5 stars The Outsider DVD.......2007-01-12

In surfing through the channels one day, I came across this movie, and thoroughly enjoyed the portion I watched. I then decided to order the movie for my own personal collection so I could watch it from the beginning. I later discovered the book was on my own reading shelf, so I now have the book and movie. The moral of the movie: Don't judge others on outside appearances only.
