"Do ya wanna party?" challenges the soundtrack to this freaky and funny reworking of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Paced to the beat of a pounding rock score, this comic flesh feast delivers both laughs and outlandish gore. No longer lumbering, moaning creatures, these lithe, feral, and cunning undead claw their way out of the cemetery and into the skulls of a human smorgasbord. They even master the art of home delivery: "Send more cops," croaks a corpse into a patrol car radio. Director Dan O'Bannon even takes pains to explain their motivation between the tributes to the granddaddy of zombie horrors ("Well, it worked in the movie!" screams James Karen when a pickax to the skull hardly phases a lively cadaver). Not that it really matters amid the gore and gallows humor, but it does add a kick to the cynically sinister climax. --Sean Axmaker
Description

Hints of sublime horror lurk in a big pile of camp lunacy in Frankenstein: The True Story. While a subtitle like The True Story might make you think this 1970s TV production hews close to Mary Shelley's classic novel, it's safe to say that Shelley's opus did not include crawling disembodied arms, sinister Chinese coolies, solar power, or the flabbergasting paisley dressing gown that Dr. Frankenstein wears for one brief but startling scene. In fact, The True Story deviates from Shelley's story in almost every detail. In this version, the young and handsome Dr. Frankenstein (Leonard Whiting, star of Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet) is lured into reviving the dead by the obsessive Dr. Clerval (David McCallum, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), who gruffly tosses off lines like "Fail? That is a word I shall teach you to forget!" and "This was specially prepared with chemicals--I'll explain what they are later." Clerval's untimely death doesn't stop Frankenstein from bringing his Creature to life in the form of the jaw-droppingly handsome Michael Sarrazin (They Shoot Horses, Don't They?). Alas, tissue degeneration soon sets in--but the oily, sinister Dr. Polidori (James Mason, Lolita) arrives to make things even worse with his plan for a female Creature in the form of the even more jaw-droppingly dewy and luscious Jane Seymour (later to becomeDr. Quinn, Medicine Woman). Most of Frankenstein: The True Story rattles along as enjoyable badness, but every so often an image flares up that's genuinely creepy--when Frankenstein's fiancee Elizabeth is menaced by an undead butterfly, the scene is laughable and eerie at the same time--and though Whiting is stiff, Mason and a parade of cameo stars (including John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, and Agnes Moorehead) inject the movie with the sort of sinister relish that animated the classic horror of the black and white era. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A favorite TV memory!.......2007-06-01
"More than anything, I found this to be the most tragic and heart-breaking version of the myth I have ever seen put to film. I highly recommend it. --Mykal Banta"
I had to quote another reviewer since this evoked the memories I have of being at my best friend's house and catching Part 1 of this mini-series when we were 10 years old. We were transfixed by the image of handsome Michael Sarrazin and were swept away by the story itself. We waited breathlessly until the next night to see Part 2 and never forgot its poignant ending. This isn't really a horror film or we wouldn't have been allowed to watch it...but Thank God we were! Great film.
Enjoy it for what it is.......2007-04-12
I remember watching this version of the Frankenstein Story and being blown away by it .It seemed more personal ,the charachters richer and very enjoyable.Though not a "true story" ,it has all the elements of the original story . Some Critics complain about the qualitity of the transfer but that should not take away from the story itself .Just because it is on DVD doesn't mean it's a flawless transfer .The acting is top notch and should just be enjoyed .
Finally!.......2007-01-11
Finally, the ultimate screen version of the Mary Shelly classic is available on DVD! This British production boasts an impressive cast (John Gielgud, Ralph Richarson, James Mason, Agnes Moorehead), superior production values, and a beautifully realized script by the great playwright Christopher Isherwood ("Berlin Stories"). I saw this when it originally aired on television in the 1970's, and it made an indelible impression on me. I've been waiting for years to see it again, and this release has not disappointed. If you're looking for a DVD of outstanding quality, rife with extras, this is not the DVD of choice. If, however, you are looking for the definitive version of Shelly's tale of hubris gone awry, beautifully filmed with outstanding performances, you likely won't do any better than the mesmerizing "Frankenstein: The True Story".
I've been waiting for this movie to be released on DVD.......2007-01-11
For those of you who have actually read Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" and have seen most of the silly movie renditions, you will not be surprised that this movie also does not follow the book very closely. The book is actually rather dry and, as typical of the time period in which it was written, involves a great deal of intellectual dialog which provokes thoughts on "playing God", and immortality. Difficult to put into a screenplay as many people go to see films that thrill them without too much thinking involved.
This is by far the best Frankenstein movie ever made. The cast is fabulous (you either love or hate various characters), the costumes beautiful, the storyline is fascinating (albeit some of the special effects are typical of the 1970's). I bought copies for both of my sisters and now need to get one for myself.
This movie rocks the house! If you like older "horror" movies, you'll love this one
Priceless.......2007-01-03
At last the full 3 hour Frankenstein, The True Story is available. With a photographic memory, I was appalled the first time I watched my VHS version and realized there was more surgery on the movie than there was on the creature. I was particularly floored by the omission of a significant Agnes Moorehead scene, as I adore this talented woman. (Was this her last role?) I agree with others that the Amazon review cannot be further from the mark. This film could not be LESS "camp". Although it is not entirely the "True" story, it is such a classy telling of the tale, that it has inspired me to buy and finally read the book. My only complaint is that the color of the DVD is fair at best. Even with constant fiddling with my TV's settings, the best I could come up with was a rusty brown tint to the majority of the film...Also, if you have never seen the film or lack my kind of memory from seeing it in 1973, skip the James Mason intro--it let's too much out! Special mention to David McCallum--he is impeccable as Clerval, and his acting certainly deserved an Emmy. Leanord Whiting's Victor Frankenstein is perfect. Watch it on a rainy night!

Curious kids open a barrel of green gas linked to a mysterious military experiment, and soon a tenebrous green cloud of fog is making its way through the creepy town cemetery. Knowing exactly where this is headed is, of course, part of the fun in this tongue-in-cheek zombie sequel. Maybe it's not as fresh as its successful predecessor, but all of the key zombie ingredients are still well preserved in this second installment: ravenous "undead" in search of human brains, severed limbs with a life of their own, and lots and lots of shrieking! Taking a hackneyed premise that is a close retelling of part I, director Ken Wiederhorn (Freddy's Nightmares, Shock Waves) rejuvenates the genre with sporadic genuine scares, lots of plain old silliness, and some literally eye-popping special effects. Followed up a few years later with the equally enjoyable Return of the Living Dead Part III, this is a fun franchise that reminds you of what '80s horror was all about: bad synth music, and perms. --Matt Wold

Customer Reviews:
A great, silly zombie journey..........2007-05-25
I actually like "Return of the Living Dead: Part II" better than the first. Though that could be considered blasphemous, this movie appealed more to me in my youth over the first, which I have finally come to accept as an outstanding zombie movie...
This edition features two of the same actors from the first in very similar buddy roles. The cast is pretty good, and the young boy lead is a strong performer for his age.
The movie is filled with zombie style laughs, including a cemetary rising scene that is super cool, but filled with cheesy laughs...
A must see in my opinion...
Kick & Awesome.......2007-05-12
The dvd came quickly...and came in better condition than i thought it would...would definitly do business again!!
Dissapointing.......2007-01-19
I'm a big fan of zombie movies, and the first return of the living dead was a very good zombie movie. This one, however, fails to scare nor hold your attention, and tries harder in my opinion to be funny instead of scary. The black humor is pathetic, espechialy compared to the first one. Had its interesting moments, but the movie as a whole was definitly below average.
I Want Your Brain!.......2006-10-13
This is not a George A. Romero project.
Directed and written by Ken Wiederman. Film contains profane language, gross bloody effects.
Thom Matthews returns as a different character, "Joey", James Karen returns as a different character, "Ed", Jonathan Terry returns as "Glover", Allan Trautman returns as "Tarman". Brian Peck returns as 5 different zombies, "Pussface", "Thriller", "Jaw", "Eye-Pop" and the zombie on the car roof.
A truck that is traveling across a bridge is carrying pressurized cases that contain cadavers. One case falls off the truck and ends up in the water. A group of kids find the case and triggers the gas inside that spreads across the cemetary. The living dead return.
Also in the cast: Thor van Lingen, Dana Ashbrook, Mitch Pileggi.
DVD only contains audio commentary and theatrical trailer.
A good follow follow-up to the original ROTLD, but doesn't bring anything new.......2006-08-16
1988 saw the release of Return of the Living Dead Part II. This film is a sort of sequel/reboot of the first film in that the story and even some of the characters bare too much of a similarity to the original film. Ken Weiderhorn both writes and directs this "sequel" and it shows. The film reuses alot of what made the first film a cult-classic amongst horror fans. Weiderhorn seems to be of the philosophy that if something ain't broke them don't fix it. What this does is make the film feel like a deja vu, and maybe that was his intent since two of the main characters in the film say pretty much the same thing. Despite all this the film itself is pretty good and stays true to the original, albeit with abit more humor and better effects work.
Reprising similar roles they had in the first film are James Karen as Ed and Thom Mathews as Joey. Both work as in the post-burial industry and moonlight stealing valuables from the privates crypts and mausoleum in the cemetary they're working in. Their characters act and almost have similar lines from Karen and Mathews' characters of Frank and Freddy in the first film. Karen as Ed goes over-the-top once the 2-4-5 Trioxin gas is let loose and the dead bodies in the cemetary begin to come back to life seeking live brains. It's these two characters who really keep the film from spiralling down to awful status. Even though their characters are similar to the original film, Karen and Mathews still bring a dose of great comedic timing and horror to the situation.
This time around the town has been safely evacuated by the military except for a few people who lived on the newly-built suburban housing area in the outskirts. It's these survivors who must try and find a way to defeat the zombies and at the same time convince the military blockading the town that they're not infected. There's more action and comedy in this sequel. I think the comedy part of the film got way too much attention, but as I said earlier, Weiderhorn seems to think that if it worked in the original then it should work with more in this film. The effects work looks abit better and probably due to an increase in the budget.
In the end, Return of the Living Dead Part II never bring anything new to the original its following-up and pretty much reuses the same characters and situations. Weiderhorn does this to good effect and the finished product is an entertaining enough horror-comedy. Who knows how this sequel would've turned out if Russo had written it and O'Bannon back directing.
Average customer rating:
- Not like the comics, but nevertheless close to Moebius/Giraud
- the worst western ever!!!!
- great visuals, and very spiritual

Based on a comic book, the international co-production Renegade (original English-language title: Blueberry) is a feverish, supernatural Western about a young Cajun man, Mike Blueberry (Hugh O'Connor), who defends his prostitute-girlfriend against gunman Wallace Blount (Michael Madsen) and ends up barely alive. Patched up by Indians, Blueberry undergoes the familiar cultural transformation to honorary Native American, then returns to his world to become a small-town marshal. (Vincent Cassel plays the adult Blueberry.) The arrival of Blount, possessed with otherworldly powers and seeking a mystical manuscript, sets the stage for a spooky duel that forces Blueberry to face old demons. The latter part of the film is overtaken by computer-generated effects that grow wearying, but before that director Jan Kounen makes up for weak narrative skills with mesmerizing imagery of the American Southwest. A nice supporting cast includes Juliette Lewis and her father, Geoffrey Lewis, plus Colm Meaney, Eddie Izzard, Ernest Borgnine, and Tcheky Karyo. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Not like the comics, but nevertheless close to Moebius/Giraud .......2006-11-25
First, I'm a big fan of the Blueberry comics. They are good, solid adventures with great, strong characters and extremely well-drawn pages (by Giraud). I'd say, they're among the best of the classics.
This is different. Of course, you'd say, it's a movie. But there is more. I was sceptical of Vincent Cassel portraying Blueberry, simply because he looks so different. Also some of the other reviews tried to warn me for an esoteric mess with nice landscapes.
I bought it anyway. And, tell you what, I wasn't deceived. Cassel is wonderful in the role. Also Juliette Lewis, Michael Madsen and the others fit perfectly well. The film is good, really good, different from the comics, but solid and tough. I like that in a western. If you like westerns, adventure, I'd say go for it. One scene at the end is too long for my taste and also too esoteric. If it would have been cut, I would have given the film 6 stars - but I have to say that I still like the idea that there is much more to life - and death - than we imagine.
The story isn't very new. Blueberry is a Marshall in a small town when the trouble starts. Bad guys, a treasure, love and dark memories from the past. Add quite a bit of Native American magic a la Moebius, and there you go. Great scenery, realistic imagery, great acting, good movie.
the worst western ever!!!!.......2006-10-12
Indians make drugs and Cowboys use 'em!!!! the worst western I ever saw!!! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!
great visuals, and very spiritual.......2006-08-13
THIS MOVIE IS A GREAT ONE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT, NOT YOUR TYPICAL COWBOY MOVIE, GREAT STORY OF HOW A YOUNG MAN HEALS HIS INNER CHILD WITH HELP FROM THE NATURAL MEDICINES OF THE INDIANS , GREAT SCENE WITH GEOMETRIC PATTERNS. LOVED IT MUST SEE
Pass the Peyote Please.......2006-06-21
I just watched this interesting sorta-western, and when it uses elements from the Western genre it works extremely well, it's 20+ minute peyote freakout session (brought to you by some very convoluted CGI) just doesn't give the resolution needed. However, this is an adaptation of a French comic book (I think we're supposed to say graphic novel, but forget that)and taking into account that there is a source material I can forgive the film's weirdness. What I can't forgive is a disappointing setup to a showdown that never happens! I was reminded of the stupid ending for Ang Lee's travesty (aka The Hulk)where something inexplicable is used to end the film. The potential for drug induced hallucinations mixed with Western gunplay is absolutely wasted. Oh and the Native Americans making odd blowing noises to either summon raptors (birds of prey, not dinosaurs) or ward of "spirits", well the sound is friggin' annoying! The good parts in this film are the performances by Vincent Cassel and Michael Madsen, too bad the script rams both of their characters into a brick wall. The cinematography is pretty good, although I think the locations deserve more credit than whoever happened to be holding the camera. If you are a Western fan you might want to check this out, just to see some of its cool elements, but it's more of a curiosity than a must own film.
indians love drugs and cowboys love indian drugs.......2006-05-08
so anyways i got this movie and only paid like two-fitty for it and that doesn't suck much.... except now i wish i had spent that two-fitty on paying a homeless guy to punch me in the nose. i think that that would be more enjoyable. well this movie is about this guy named mike blueberry who is a cajun who moves out west to be roughed up by his cajun uncle, which is dumb because the name of the character in the comic was mike donovan and he was just a dumb, racist guy who changes his ways after being rescued by a black guy once. so anyways mike is all dying and stuff and starts remembering when he was a kid and was brought out to the wild, wild west to be raised by his cajun uncle. then he goes into town and there's this white guy rapping about the prostitutes at his place and he sees this one hot chick and he's all dreamin about her. and his uncle beats him up and makes him drive a fencepost into the ground or something and he gets really tired of that and he steals his uncle's money and goes to see the hot prostitute and it shows her boobs and they get all naked and stuff and then he tells her he wants to marry her or something gay and they are all playing under the covers and mr. blonde comes in and he's a cowboy and he gets mad at mike cause that hooker was his hooker and then mike gets all mad and takes mr blonde's gun and someone shoots and a lantern gets knocked over and the place catches on fire. and mike falls outta tha window and onto a horse and the horse takes him to see some indians. the indians patch him up cause he looks like he got shot somewhere, but they don't ever tell where but anyways he also broke his nose and the indian kid calls him broken nose... i know, i hated that kid too. it's cool cause he grows up to be jango fett later. so anyways mike grows up like an indian and learns to catch birds on his arms and stuff and he keeps seeing crazy injun magic smoke visions and stuff. they's mighty scary visions too with big ole bugs and things in em. so anyways it all of a sudden flashes forward like a buncha years and he's all growed up and he's suddenly a marshall and protects this really crappy town. but it's all goo cause that irish dude from star trek is his deputy and ernest borgnine in a wheelchair is the sheriff.... no i am not drunk. so anyways, that bald dude from any which way but loose is in here... you know the one with the bowed legs... yeah that guy. and his daughter is that julliette lewis chick... you ask me she's ugly as a manatee's butthole. but she's kinda got a nice body and stuff. trust me... i now know. anyways, you know who i'm talkin about; she's always acting like a retard in her movies and brad pitt dated her in kalifornia and woody harrelson did too in natural born killers. so anyways that bow-legged dude... hey... i think his name is lewis too... anyways, he's all itchin to go find the mysterious cities of gold just like esteban and tao on that nickelodeon cartoon. but the big deal is that the comanche indians protect that place on account of it's sacred and stuff. so you can't just walk up there cause they tend to take the tops of people's heads and stuff. so daddy bow legs sends this black dude and some german dude out to find the magic mountain and stuff but the german rats out the big black guy (dang dirty nazis!) and the indians give him a real close haircut. so the german escapes and cuts hisself and makes it look like the comanches did it out of their territory so that mike will have to step in and tell em to stay away from the nice, rich, white people. so mike goes to talk at the comanches and they pretty much pick a fight with him cause they seem to be real jerks, but mike is all tough and ... well... ok so he's really not all that tough... the comanches just kinda feel sorry for him and let him go. no one likes beating up an ugly kid. so he goes to see his old indian pal and it turns out that that guy is the guy who was jango fett in star wars. this is like the only movie i ever liked that guy in. so anyways they smoke some stuff and see snakes and things... again. and this indian chick had run into mr blonde's people and it turns out mr blonde somehow started looking for spiritual enlightenment and became a serious magic guy somewhere along the way... don't ask me.. i didn't write this thing. anyways mike doesn't knwo who it is so he goes back to town where he finds out that mr blonde is there and he goes all crazy and goes to get his gun he took from him all those years ago and when he comes back mr blonde's people beat the mud out of him and set his jail on fire. anyways mike's irish deputy who used to work on the enterprise stuffs him under the jailhouse just in the nick of time. then mr blonde's folks go kill daddy bow legs and take the german dude who can read the magic indian map to the secret golden magic mountain. i'm totally not drunk either. i swear. anyways julliet lewis gets all mad and she swears vengeance and gets all her mexican buddies to get on horses and chase mr blonde's people off into the land of the magic mountains.. and comanches. so the irish transporter operator from star trek takes mike to the indians to heal his soul and jango fett gives him some magic mushroom whiskey that makes him convulse and see some of the aliens from that computer generated final fantasy movie that sucked. yeah... they totally looked just like that. and then snakes come out of his mouth and i was really scared there for a minute because it got so weird that my mind jumped out of my body. so jango tells mike that he's now ready to go fight the big bad guy in the magic mountain. so he, mr obrien and jango all head out to chase down the bad guys. so mr blonde has like a day's jump on everyone, and juliete lewis is right behind and then like a day behind them is mike and the boys. somehow they all end up at the same place around the same time. anyways... in the desert mr blonde's crazy buddy rapes juliette lewis. i guess he wasn't interested in the horse... even if it was prettier. anyways she kills him and goes all crazy-like, so mike and the boys come up and jango gives her some magic tea and sings into his fist till her rapedness goes away and she's ok. TA-DA! anyways mr blonde and the german are the only two left after the comanches shoot at them and the german throws dynamite at them. i am completely sober... i swear. anyways the german turns on mr blond and uses his compass' tripod TO STAB A HORSE IN THE HEART!!!!! that german dude is billy badness. well... somehow mr blonde gets out from under his horse and manages to beat the german guy to the magic mountain and watches as he falls in some of the nastiest mud i have ever seen in my life. it really, really bothered me a lot. it had bubbles like that bubble-in-a-tube stuff that used to make kids sterile... you know the stuff. anyways mike and the boys get there and he finds out that you have to swim to the secret magic mountain super indian hideout. so he swims there and mr blonde is all pleasant with him and he has already had a glass full of this magic mushroom juice and he's all crazy loopy and talking to god and stuff and jango-- wait how did he get in here-- tells mike to drink the juice and battle mr blonde in the other world. so mike does and then there's like this 15 minute long segment where their brains fight each other and mike discovers that he was the one who shot the prostitute and juliette lewis comes in to the "secret" cave and helps him win the brain battle with mr blonde, who turns into a corpse when his bugs lose to mike brain snakes. then jango and mike are like "hey man we won, let's go on a magic ride around the universe" and they do. and we get to watch em do it. it almost put me to sleep 20 times. so then mike is ok and mr blonde is dead and the hero won and the movie is over... except is isn't. mike goes out and swims with a VERY naked julliette lewis who really, really, really needs to learn about the wonders of razors. i mean that in the most horrible way, of course. female pit hair is the nastiest thing on the earth. so for like five minutes we see a naked guy swimming after a naked chick. then it's the end.
i got nothing out of this adventure. well... jango fett was finally cool cause he had snakes coming out of his head... but really... anyone with snakes coming out of their heads is pretty cool in my book. so i basically learned that indians love drugs and cowboys love indian drugs.
and julliette lewis should never, ever, ever be allowed to get naked ever again.

Adapted from Osamu Tezuka's 1949 manga, Metropolis (in Japanese with English subtitles) is an opulently beautiful film that fails to present a coherent story worthy of its extraordinary visuals. Evil Duke Red (voice by Taro Ishida) plans to rule the world from Ziggurat, his newly completed art deco tower. A new robot is being developed by his henchman Dr. Laughton (Junpei Takeguchi) to control all the machines in the world from Ziggurat. Japanese detective Shunsaku Ban (Kousei Tomita) and his nephew Kenichi (Kei Kobayashi) arrive in Metropolis in pursuit of Laughton and are plunged into Red's plot. When the duke's maniacal adopted son Rock (Kohki Okada) attacks Laughton's hidden lab, Kenichi and the waiflike android Tima (Yuka Imoto) flee into the city's subterranean slums and fall in love. Despite a protracted series of chases and violent shootouts, there's little excitement and less character development. Director Rintaro (Hayashi Shigeyuki) borrows heavily from Fritz Lang's 1926 Metropolis, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, and Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira, but his staging makes much of the action hard to follow. The film takes an unintentionally hilarious turn when Ziggurat crumbles to Ray Charles's "I Can't Stop Loving You." The computer-generated skyscrapers, machines, and airships offer dazzling vistas of an overscaled and sinister deco-dystopia. But Tezuka's flat little characters, with their big eyes, round noses, and bubble-shaped feet, don't fit into that realistic three-dimensional environment. MPAA rating: PG. Contains considerable violence and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon

Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequel was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it "the most hilariously incomprehensible movie ... almost awesome in its badness." In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequel to 1986's Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as "Immortals," banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen plays a scientist who assists MacLeod in his mission to destroy the cartel. Sean Connery also reprises his role from Highlander as the Scottish Immortal named Ramirez (?!), but by the time he starts engaging in dashing swordplay you may wonder if he's wandered in from another movie altogether. Highlander fans welcomed the laserdisc and DVD release of this "renegade" director's cut, which attempts to clarify the original version's confusing plot. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Keep the season's coming!.......2007-04-19
When is season 4 releasing to buy? This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger! I want the entire collection.
Terrific.......2007-04-11
I think Renegade Season one is terrific. I love all of the episodes. Reno and Bobby are fantastic together. Wish it were still on tv
Good God, man.......2006-12-06
What an embarassment. I knew D. Victor when he was a bad writer. But this shows that there is no bottom for a true hack. Pass on this one.
Best show ever.......2006-09-07
For all of you who like long hair, babes, motorcyles, and hummers then this is the show for you. It has something for everyone. I can't wait for Season 4 and 5 to come out, has anyone heard when Best Buy is going to come out with it. I have been on their website but I don't see anything yet but maybe next March or April. I can't understand why Spike or another televison staion has not picked up this show, if anything they can play it late at night like USA did. I really believe if they put it back on television, it would increase the DVD sales. It would be introduced to a new generation. There isn't too many shows that are popular now with martial arts.
Seasons 2 and 3.......2006-04-15
For those who are looking to purchase seasons 2 and 3 you won't be able to find it on Amazon. Best Buy has an exclusive contract at this point and is the only retailer offering seasons 2 and 3.

A darling of the 1998 festival circuit, Marc Levin's Slam won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance as well as the Camera d'Or (best first film) at Cannes. Despite its shortcomings, the film merits these awards--Slam offers a strong cast and compelling subject matter, a perfect setting with a killer soundtrack, and over-the-top rap poetry.
The film opens with an exterior shot of the protagonist, Raymond Joshua (played by real-life poet Saul Williams), walking away from the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. The image of a young black man turning his back on this symbol of government scant minutes before he's popped on a chump-change drug charge is poignant and disturbing--not easily forgotten by anyone aware of the immense contradictions inherent in the demographics of the nation's capital.
Slam depicts Raymond's fall from relative innocence, and his apparent redemption. As a small-time dope dealer and street poet, his arrest thrusts him into an unfamiliar world--the violence of life in the slammer is palpable and altogether frightening. Incarceration, however, awakens the slumbering power of Raymond's poetry; eventually, its strength keeps him alive. In a prison yard scene when he's about to get whomped, Raymond gives free rein to his words, choosing poetry in motion over violence. Hearing Raymond's impassioned words, the hardened cons let him walk. One of them even covers his bail, and Raymond hits the streets, eager to check out Lauren (Sonja Sohn), the creative-writing teacher he met behind bars.
Although the third act dilutes the credibility established by Levin's in-your-face vérité style, Slam is relentlessly passionate, unswerving in its conviction that there's an alternative to the violence that decimates North America's inner cities. Indeed, for all the film's preachiness, we cheer Raymond on, fueling his poetry, hoping, somehow, that it can transform those around him. Peace is the word. --Stephan Magcosta
