Surely you know: Marshal Will Kane, newly married, newly retired from office, and about to ride off to a new life, learns that his sworn enemy is out of prison and returning on the noon train to kill him. Kane and his bride--a Quaker who rejects violence--flee as the townsfolk urge. But Kane can't live with that and turns back--only to find himself deserted by both wife and community and left to face four deadly killers alone. That's the premise of High Noon, a 1952 independent film and seminal "adult" Western that became an instant classic. It's also the plot of this 2000 made-for-TV movie, produced by the wife (now widow) of the man who produced the original, Stanley Kramer.

Is there any project more pointless than remaking a classic--especially one that's part of the national consciousness, not only a cinematic but also a moral and political touchstone? Director Rod Hardy has discouraged comparisons by eschewing almost everything that distinguished the original: the music, the theme song, the expressionistic camera angles and ticking clocks and metronomic cutting underscoring the real-time suspense. Enough of Carl Foreman's screenplay has been retained that he's credited as cowriter of the teleplay despite having died in 1984. But the urgency of that screenplay is missing--the underlying allegory of the conformism, betrayal, and fear of the blacklist that had the Hollywood community in a death grip. (Foreman himself was soon blacklisted.)

Tom Skerritt gets the marshal's dignity and exasperation but conveys none of the anguish and vulnerability that made Gary Cooper's heroism all the more moving. Otherwise the cast is a study in drabness: Susanna Thompson stiff and peevish in the Grace Kelly part, Reed Diamond a punk substitute for Lloyd Bridges as Kane's envious deputy, a cast of anonymous Canadians filling in blandly for a gallery of legendary character actors. Only Maria Conchita Alonso and Michael Madsen get within hailing distance of, respectively, Katy Jurado as Kane's former mistress and Ian MacDonald as the malevolent Frank Miller. --Richard T. One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. Additional features include the exclusive documentary The Making of High Noon, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin and featuring interviews with the late Lloyd Bridges (who played Cooper's rival ex-deputy), director Fred Zinnemann, and producer Stanley Kramer. Also included is the original theatrical trailer and a special chapter stop highlighting the Oscar-winning song "Do Not Forsake Me." Offered in English and dubbed French and Spanish, with English closed-captioning or Spanish and French subtitles. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Western.......2007-07-09

This black and white western is just as engaging and suspensful today as it was in 1950. A best actor oscar went to Gary Cooper with fine performances by Grace Kelly and Katie Jurado. The DVD is of good quality with good optical quality. The images are sharp and the blacks are black.

5 out of 5 stars High Noon.......2007-06-26

Fred Zinnemann's stark revenge tale, told in real time, packs enough intensity into eighty minutes to carry two movies. It's suspenseful in the extreme, but also a morality tale, powerful in its simplicity, about the courage to make difficult, principled choices, even when those around you take the easy way out. This offers obvious parallels to the prevailing McCarthyism of the time (writer Carl Foreman was indeed blacklisted), but symbolism aside, this remains a trim, altogether brilliant western, with veteran star Cooper creating the quintessential authentic Western hero.

Don't forsake me Oh,my darling

High Noon (DVD)

High Noon (1952) might very well be the best Western movie ever made. It stars Gary Cooper as the town Marshall and Grace Kelly as his new bride.

The movie opens with the Marshall getting married and concomitantly the telegraph operator receiving an alarming telegraph. The telegraph operator writes out the message, the Justice of the Peace reads the wedding ceremony. Will the Marshall get married before the telegraph message can be delivered? The telegraph operator finishes and runs out the door toward town,. "He's moving pretty fast for a Sunday" comments a bystander The telegraph operator runs, the Justice of the Peace reads, will he make it? Yes, they're pronounced Man and Wife. Yeah!

The telegraph operator burst into the room. "Marshal, Marshal, you have a telegram" The Marshal reads that a murderer who he helped arrest just got pardoned. Probably by a` Democrat Governor. Remember Bill Clinton's pardons? The murderer, Frank is expected on the noon train. Close up of the clock, eighty-four minutes from now. Meanwhile three of Frank's friends ride into town and wait for the noon train. Pretty obvious what they're waiting for. Meanwhile the townspeople try to bundle the Marshall and his bride out of town on a buckboard. The Marshall makes it a ways out of town, then stops the buckboard and turns to his bride and says " I just can't do it" I can't run away . His bride, a Quaker, disagrees with him and wants him to run away. When they get back to town. His bride lays out an ultimatum. Choose, either leave town or lose me, The Marshall stays.

For the next sixty minutes or so the Marshal has all his "friends" turn against him, one after the other. Nobody is willing to help. It looks like it `s going to be four against one, with the Marshall being the the one. The suspense slowly builds until there is a mighty climax at the end.

You'll just have to watch the movie to see how it ends. It's worth it.

Highly recommended for fans of the old fashion Western movie.

That's how Kane must have felt: if he runs, Miller will chase him down and kill him; if he stays to fight, the townspeople will not lift a finger to help him. His only choice is to stay and fight, hoping against all odds that he will still be alive when it is over.

As I watched the film, I could sense that Kane must have had serious doubts as noon approached. Too late to run, even if it could have done any good. The townspeople - his so-called "friends" - abandoning him in his hour of need. One minute they are grateful for all that he has done for them and the next minute, they are writing him off for dead and making plans on how to live with Miller and his gang after they kill the marshall. Okay, not ALL the townspeople turned their backs on him. There was a young boy who Kane would not allow to fight, being so young. Another was a drunk, who doubtless truely wished to help, but would have ben no real good to the marshall. There was an eager volunteer who backed-out once he realized that it would only have been the two of them against Miller and his gang. Lastly, there were a few men who did volunteer to assist Kane, only to back-out after being talked out of it by their fellow townspeople. So, in the end, Kane stood all alone on an empty street. He even watched as his wife and former girlfriend rode past him on their way to board the very same train that Miller arrived on!

Even though I knew how it would all end, having read about this film and never having seen it before, I had this strong feeling of tension as noon approached. I could even feel the twisting knot in my stomach as I saw the camera pan back, showing Kane standing alone on the street, with no one else around. Suspending disbelief, I wondered what Kane was thinking as the showdown approached.

In the end, of course, Kane was alive and as he boarded his coach to leave town for the final time, I could also feel the strong sense of disgust at the townspeople for their cowardice and I could easily understand why he dropped his badge in the dust before boarding the wagon. If just four men had positioned themselves with rifles in windows overlooking the street, the fight could have been over in seconds, with only the outlaws getting killed and no one else hurt or endangered. Despite their superiority of numbers and the fact that had superior firepower over the outlaws, if only they had utilized it, they still cowered behind their doors and waited until the end.

John Wayne's feeling towards this movie notwithstanding, this is a true American story: one man, standing alone against evil, despite all odds and having been abandoned by everyone he thought he could trust to help him.

If only we all could be as courageous as Marshall Will Kane when the time comes.

3 out of 5 stars A Dated Drama.......2007-06-12

A classic western, and Grace Kelley is beautiful, but unfortunately, it didn't seem to capture the imagination of my eighth grade class who like their dramas fast paced and violent. Still, the drama is clean and pure and the line between the good guys and the bad guys is blurred in an interesting way. If you're over thirty, I'd recommend it.

An evil gang takes over an amusement park only to be foiled by three Ninja-trained brothers and a TV action star in this smartly paced (if by-the- numbers) kiddie action flick. Medusa (Loni Anderson) and Lothar (Jim Varney) head up the gang with ransom money and mayhem on their minds. But they don't count on the young Caucasian trio, taught by their inexplicably Asian grandfather, and Dave Dragon (Hulk Hogan), making a live appearance at the park. What follows is campy humor, lots of Karate-esque action and plenty of Home Alone-type boy vs. foolish bad guy high jinks. And girls aren't left out: the brothers' neighbor, a brainy techno girl, is on hand to hack into the computer to override the gang's murderous plans, while also providing 007-style gadgets for hand-to-hand combat. While there is plenty of gunplay in the 90- minute film, no one is killed or even significantly hurt, making it appropriate for ages 5 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Classic Ninja Flick!.......2007-04-24

If there's one thing I learned over the years, it's that marketing doesn't lie, and this trend continues with the SMASH HIT movie 3 NINJAS - HIGH NOON ON MEGA MOUNTAIN. Just as the box says, THE KIDS WILL LOVE IT! First off, just look at the cast!! HULK HOGAN, LONI ANDERSON, and JIM VARNEY all one one screen together? HOLY SMOKES!!!! I'm surprised they were able to get one of these NINJAS on screen much less ALL THREE IN THE SAME ACTION PACKED MOVIE!!!11 SOMEONE CALL IMAX!!!! However these NINJA masters were matched with a very talented director, Sean McNamara, who had recent successes with blockbusters like "THE LEGEND OF GALGAMETH". He really put this ALL STAR CAST through the paces and produced a movie that represents one of the best movies in the genre of NINJA movies, not to mention the CROWN JEWEL of their illustrious careers.

LONI ANDERSON playing MEDUSA made for a wonderful villain. Her continuing role as the NINJA master in hit series WKRP really translated well to the big screen, and I definitely would have been afraid to go to HIGH NOON ON MEGA MOUNTAIN if she had taken it over. I wasn't sure if HULK HOGAN was going to be up to saving MEGA MOUNTAIN or not with such a formidable opponent, but you'll have to get the movie yourself to see how it turns out.

If you're looking for one of the best NINJA movies ever with BONE CRUSHING ACTION, GLITZY MEGA STARS and HILARIOUS HIJINKS along the way, this is a movie the whole family will love. HEY MR AMAZON, WHY WON'T YOU LET ME GIVE THIS A 6/5 STARS??? As of this review there are only 4 in stock, so snatch this classic up WHILE YOU CAN!

GET READY TO BE BLOWN AWAY! First, you get non-stop, crotch-knockin', light-up-the-eyes ninja action! Throw HULK HOGUN into the mix! That's right, I said HULK HOGUN! Then, bring Ernest into the picture! And mix it all up at MEGA FLIPPIN' MOUNTAIN!! MEGA MOUNTAIN! I used to love to go to mega mountain as a kid, and now we have a 3 NINJAS movie right there! What more could you ask for? This movie was dangerous! They had guns, and they were taking over the park, but guess who saved the day? NOt only the 3 NINJAS, but HULK HOGUN! You couldn't possibly get anything better in a movie! I was scurred, but I knew everything would turn out right with THE 3 NINJAS AND DAVE DRAGON! Nobody in their right mind would EVER mess with Dave Dragon. You'll get your eyes lighted-up! Then Tum Tum will rock your crotch! Watch out! GET THIS MOVIE!!

2 out of 5 stars Less Fun Than An Inflamed Boil.......2006-08-14

I bought this film for a dollar with the intention of sending it to a friend who needed some "family" entertainment. Being a connoisseur of bad movies, though, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to preview it just to see Jim Varney as the villain, Lothar Zogg, which I admit is a great name. It is a sad day when Jim Varney is the best dramatic actor in a movie, even a kid's movie. (I would say this movie would be appropriate for ages six an up; the only violence is incessant karate.) This will definitely teach me not to watch kid's movies I bought as gifts.

Again, I repeat, Varney is by far the highlight of the film, although Hulk Hogan (as "Dave Dragon") tries his best to hang in there. The undisputed low point is Loni Anderson in a black leather outfit as the evil "Medusa." Her performance is not frightening, though her evident cosmetic surgery made me scream out loud.

The plot is that three kids, Colt, Rocky, and Tum Tum (really) learn to be ninjas from their grandpa, who uses a variety of teaching methods, most of which seem to involve toilet plungers. They defend Mega Mountain from terrorists led by the "Zogg and Medusa Moronic Criminals Corporation" (apparently) via endless action sequences and contrivances that James Bond wouldn't allow out of his tool shed, furnished by brainy techno-nerd, Amanda. Eventually the tension is resolved by the least believable plot device (hint: it involves compressed gases, a bomb, and a boat) in recent memory.

Watch especially for the scene with Jim Varney brandishing a saber, and the model helicopter ransom money interception collision ploy. I had thought of titling this review "Extortion on the Log Flume," but that really didn't convey the pain that this movie inflicts. In the end, though, I gave it two stars for a couple of reasons: first, the name Lothar Zogg really is a great villain name, and second, the movie is (after all) meant for kids, so I should give it some slack.

Although I revel in bad movies for their camp value, this one is probably good for young boys, and a chore worse than cleaning out the grease trap for just about everyone else.

If you had a diamond in one hand, and a copy of 3 Ninjas - High Noon on Mega Mountain in another, I'd pawn that diamond in order to buy more 3 Ninjas videos.

I have evaluated the martial arts in this movie. They are using a technique called Kun Chi Do perfectly. It's hard to appreciate this movie unless you are a martial arts fanatic. Those kids probably know enough Kun Chi Do to punch a man in the chest and make his torso explode, and then paint a fence. If you asked Frans if he'd walk down a dark alley with these kids hiding somewhere, I would say you're a silly head and then watch Jeopardy!. BUT THESE KIDS ARE VERY SKILLED.

Jameson

4 out of 5 stars Still a good story.......2006-10-27

This is a film based on the western novel, The Tin Star. This particular version is a Ron Hardy remake (headlining Tom Skerritt) of the Gary Cooper movie classic by the same name - High Noon.

The story is austerely set in an Old West town, and is simple . . . the bad guy has been released from prison and is arriving on the noon train. He will seek revenge on the Marshal. The bad guy is bringing friends. Sounds pretty familiar. Add that the Marshal is a newlywed, and ready to retire. He also has an old flame in town. The townspeople love him but will not physically risk themselves to help him. The Marshal is facing this alone and has a bad feeling about his situation but is resolved to be faithful to his duty. It's a good story, but simple and puts a big load on the lead actor to pull it off well.

I'll go ahead and jump onboard the comparison wagon (everyone else has), and comment on this version as compared to the original. Reviewers are being really tough on this remake, but, my opinion . . . if you've never seen the original, you'll enjoy this. If you have already seen the original, you'll probably still enjoy this. A film remake analogy that comes to mind is the great, On the Beach, from Neville Shute's novel. The original was one of the greatest films of all time. The remake is a pretty good film.

This newer version is missing a few things - mainly Gary Cooper. It also lacks that classic music theme and the general ambiance of those great 40's/50's Hollywood westerns. On the upside, Tom Skerritt does a very good job of selling himself as an aging and vulnerable lawman ready to retire. Susanna Thompson was rather weak as the newlywed Quaker bride, but the rest of the supporting cast is adequate. Production values are moderately good and the set is believable with plenty of mud and general grunge that was lacking in the original.

It was a nice re-visit to a favorite old movie tale.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing but a clone..........2005-08-03

I was a huge fan of the original movie, and I went into this one expecting something different. Some sort of new twist or perspective.

What I got is basically the exact same movie, only this time in color, with a less impressive casting job, and all the dialogue rewritten so that the plotline is spoon fed to you.

I don't know what's worse, the fact that certain shots are remade almost perfectly from the old movie, or the fact that almost the first twenty minutes are devoted to characters explaining to each other things which were obvious to the viewer in the first movie, without the characters stopping to tell each other how they felt. For a movie that's based around the last hour before noon, there's a remarkable lack of suspense here.

It would have been hard to top the original, but they didn't even bother trying here. This is just a poorly made clone.

1 out of 5 stars IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO IMPROVE ON PERFECTION.......2004-10-22

I saw this DVD in the bargain bin at my local Wal-Mart for $4.99. At that price, and being a big fan of the original, I was intrigued. I am also a fan of Tom Skerritt who stars in this one as Will Kane, the hapless marshal whose integrity and honor force him to make a solitary stand against four bad guys and an apathetic town.

I am sorry to say that, despite a valiant effort by Skerritt, this remake and the rest of the cast fall woefully short. Even at bargain price I would pass on this one if I were you. It's just an impossible task to do what is attempted here: remaking or improving on perfection. Gary Cooper defined the role of Will Kane. Period. You might as well attempt a remake of THE COWBOYS, TRUE GRIT, THE SHOOTIST or THE SEARCHERS with someone other than John Wayne in the lead.

THE HORSEMAN

1 out of 5 stars Don't even bother.......2004-08-19

In fact, don't even think about it. That's the advice someone should have given to the producers of this remake. The original "High Noon" is a movie that cannot be improved upon. No one could possibly bring more to the film than Gary Cooper did. Tom Skerritt brings only a pale imitation. I rank this as the second-stupidest remake of all time. It's not horribly awful, like the laughably awful remake of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" with counter-culture kung fu star Tom Laughlin ("Billy Jack Goes to Washington"). It's simply bland and generally inoffensive. That is an offense in itself, however, considering what you could have bought with the same money. Okay, the producers of this film made a mistake, but you don't have to. Get the original and skip this tepid made-for-TV travesty.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time!.......2004-08-02

Do not try to remake a masterpiece. I like Tom Skeritt, but he is no Gary Cooper. Original "High Noon" cannot be remade--so leave it alone. The music help make the tension in the original, the new version has hadly any music at all. Very poor don't waste your time-- watch "Dumb and Dumber" instead....

In these final four episodes, the saga of Vash the Stampede builds to the climactic confrontation between Vash and his vicious twin, Knives. Director Satoshi Nishimura and writer Yosuke Kuroda also sort out the fates of the other characters: gun-toting preacher Nicholas V. Wolfwood reveals a surprising past; sorrow gives Milly an unexpected strength, shifting the balance between her and Meryl. Vash also has to deal with the last of the Gung-Ho Guns, including Legato Bluesummers. These confrontations involve some agonizing decisions, and voice actor Johnny Yong Bosh articulates Vash's suffering in an exceptional performance. Before the final face-off, the filmmakers show some of the backstory of Vash and Knives, which they began to explore in episode 17. But Nishimura and Kuroda fail to supply some important information: it's been clear all along that Vash isn't human, but what is he? Trigun ends on an upbeat note that will please its many fans, despite the unanswered questions. Apparently no one expected the series to become so popular when it hit the states in 2000; there's already talk of additional episodes or a feature. Sometimes comic and kooky, sometimes gentle and earnest, Vash stands out as one of the most appealing and individual characters in recent anime. It seems unlikely that the artists would end the adventures of a figure with so much potential--and so many fans. Rated 13 and up for violence and mild profanity. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars one of the best animes ever.......2006-07-01

First I would like to say this is an incredibly good anime. And no matter what you think of the descreption you should at least try watching a few episodes. Also in the descreption of these episodes it was stated that you never find out what vash is- this is untrue, it reveals what he is(I dont want to spoil anything for you if you have not seen the series). Also there is not a good chance there will be any more episodes. The person who said that there are still mangas being made in Japan was correct, but these mangas have a entirely different storyline than the anime(the mangas are more like an alternate path than a continuation) and do not take place after the anime.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked from the start!.......2005-03-26

An anime-fanatic friend kept telling me I had to watch some show called Trigun, and I kept putting him off because his description sounded lame. I mean really, a futuristic western on another planet?
Well . . . I watched the first episode and was hooked! What an awesome show! The ending is fitting and left me satisfied. If you have only seen the show on Adult-Swim, I highly recommend buying all the DVDs, or at least the last, since the real ending is played out in the credits and is not entirely shown on Adult-Swim.
Now I find myself stuck in the same position as my friend. I cannot explain this show adequately to anyone without making it sound lame! I just make them watch it and get them hooked that way!

5 out of 5 stars NEW SERIES.......2003-12-04

This is by far the greatest anime series ever. And there is a 99.9% chance that there will be new episodes within the next few years since new Trigun mangas (comics). are being released in Japan!

5 out of 5 stars I Really love this anime.......2003-08-24

This has to be one of the best anime series I have ever watched.. This being the last of the series makes it one of the best.... When Vash comes head to head with his twin, Knives.... And when something terrible happens in the episode Sin.. I just had to watch this DVD over and over again.. To anyone who likes action, drama and likes it when the character has a terrible past.. You'll love this series.... I highly recommend that you buy it...

5 out of 5 stars How could you not rate this thirteen and a half?!.......2002-03-06

THIS IS THE COOLEST! After watching the whole series, this just mademe start rolling around the floor all day saying oh my god. Why? Because to someone who watches anime a whole lot and gets thier life twisted by it knows that it just has a certain feeling of 'wow, is that really what it's all about?' And OH MY GOD!, of course ^^

Powelines Productions brings you the updated and re-mastered High Noon At Low Tide, documenting the historic five-day swell in December of 1994 that put Mavericks on the map and changed big-wave surfing forever. Detailing the epic conditions of the biggest days, this new version features interviews with the surfers then and now as they describe the week that changed their lives. The original version of High Noon at Low Tide was a passable low-budget flick focusing on the most significant single week in the history of big-wave surfing. The updated, re-mastered and altogether remarkable new version of High Noon is a stunning transformation -- an elegant and powerful documentary featuring previously unseen footage and intimate interviews about five days in December 1994 that changed our sport. Eric W. Nelson has done the surf world a huge favor by reconstructing this film. Jay Moriaritys unforgettable wipeout, Mark Foos last ride, Peter Mels perfect positioning, Evan Slaters crazed invincibility: its all here, deepened with reflective commentary from the surfers who witnessed every moment. The world is awash in surf movies these days, and very few come close to eliciting any kind of emotional effect. This one moved me. Steve Hawk Former Editor Surfer Magazine
