Stephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is generally considered his greatest work, macabre but darkly humorous with a viscerally powerful score that has found a home both on Broadway and in opera houses. George Hearn (who replaced Len Cariou of the original Broadway cast) plays the title character, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 18th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber), and Angela Lansbury plays his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, who finds a practical business use for Todd's victims. This combination of horror and humor is echoed in Sondheim's score: brooding menace ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "My Friend"), achingly beautiful ballads ("Johanna," "Not While I'm Around"), clever puns ("A Little Priest"), coloratura arias ("Green Finch and Linnet Bird"), and intricate choral and ensemble numbers.
Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
Description
Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.

this is my FAVORITE show ever and im so thankful that the original/much better version is now available!
Film record of the stage production.......2007-02-01
Halfway between movie and stage is the filming of a stage production. It is difficult to capture the intimacy and immediacy of theater on film, difficult to exercise the kind of control that film offers on stage. This is a filming of a live stage presentation. It looks reasonably good and sound quality seems fine. The major selling point is Angela Lansbury's fine performance as the demented Mrs. Lovett. It is a wonderful performance and considering how many wonderful performances on stage are lost forever, it is nice to see this one preserved. A lifetime of playing villainesses seems to free her to approach the part with utter abandon. The musical itself is excellent and beautifully done. The biggest concern I have is that with a price this high, the DVD clearly was made as cheaply as possible with a cheap cardboard container and absolutely no extras of any kind. I do not think that there is anything that would justify the cost and, while I am pleased to have the film, I am disgusted at the inordinately high price charged. It is a crime to make so little effort in simply reproducing a film whose costs were quite limited in the first place, packaging it as cheaply as possible and then charging top dollar for the final product. It is really shameful.
Sweeny Todd.......2007-01-28
Sweeney Todd is a wonderfully dark romp through broadway. It follows the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who was jilted by the judge and beetle of old time London and soon seeks revenge. A wonderful performance by Angela Lansbury as Nellie Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeny Todd.
The not-such-a-demon barber of fleet street.......2007-01-11
It is easy to see why Angela Lansbury won a Tony for this peformance. The sets, scenery and costumes are wonderful. The cast is quite effective, but at times it is very hard to distinguish some of the lyrics in the larger production numbers. A must see for anyone that is aware that Tim Burton is going to bring his own unique take on this story to life.
Sweeney Todd.......2007-01-10
Love it! Wonderful recording of this musical. A must for musical libraries.

This HBO documentary is based on a highly original idea: tell the story of baseball from the Great Depression era through the late 1950s using footage from home-movie cameras shot by fans and players. The result is a marvelous look at baseball in America as seen from the ground--the culture of stadiums, the ritual of afternoon games, the spiritually sustaining rivalries. Among the truly unexpected sights is color footage of the 1938 World Series, not only from inside the stadium walls but from the street as traffic cops, crowds, and vehicles amassed. It also covers World War II's impact on the game, and, of course, the heroes, often caught in relaxed, unselfconscious moments.
Arguably more defined and even more lyrical than its predecessor, When It Was a Game 2 moves from a general celebration of baseball culture in America to a specific focus on various facets of the game's history, including the special relationship between game announcers and fans and the farm-team system during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Brooklyn's assimilation of the Dodgers into their community identity is covered quite winningly as is the heartbreak of the team's desertion to California. Last, the film takes us on a tour of some of the game's legends and presents a touching tribute to the extraordinary Babe Ruth. --Tom Keogh
When It Was a Game 3 focuses on the 1960s, a time of change for all of America. Through sharp, incredibly clear color footage of players and fans, the film shows how Major League Baseball slowly but surely evolved from pure sport to moneymaking entertainment. Covering the mighty Yankees, the western expansion of both leagues, the increasing inclusion of black players, and the rise of free agency and increased salaries, the film shows the growth of baseball from adolescence to adulthood. --Rob Lightner

Triple Play! But Not Quite An Unassisted One .......2007-07-04
An engrossing three pack of DVDs that shows color film of stars from the Thirties thru the Sixties - there were a few too many "odes to baseball" for me and not enuff ID of the players in the first two DVDs, which made the last disc the most enjoyable for me because more players were identified (and I guess I recognized them better, too) - it would've been even better if HBO had taken the time to identify the other players in the film - sure, we all know Babe and Mickey and Ted, etc. when we see them but it would've been great to see identification of "lesser" players (by "lesser" I mean players we dont recognize right off). But still, plaudits to HBO for doing this series when they did - much better than anything that Burns series did for baseball, which had far too many "odes to New York" for my tastes.
When It Was a Game - Triple Play Collection.......2007-05-13
One of the best baseball documentaries every put together. If you love the game you will not want to leave this out of your dvd lineup.
Best Baseball DVD...Ever.......2007-04-18
You'll be amazed at some of the footage here..a nearly ivy-less Wrigley, a ad-filled monster at Fenway, infielders tossing their gloves onto the outfield grass after the 3rd out, and on and on and on. Legends you've only read about or seen still photographs of in living color, many in the prime of their careers. Some of the commentary is a little syruppy, but that's baseball...a must for any fan, regardless of age.
A MUST HAVE IN THE COLLECTION FOR ALL BASEBALL ENTHUSIASTS.......2007-03-20
This compilation of home movies from bygone eras with interwoven poetry by the acting stars of today is classic. It's a must have, feel good set for any real baseball fan. For anyone who grew up in the 50's and the 60's it will touch your baseball soul.
"When It Was a Game" retrospective.......2007-03-19
I have owned the VHS version of WIWaG II for years and rewatched it a few weeks ago. After seeing it, I decided to order the full DVD set. As a boy growing up in the fifties and sixties, baseball was everything for myself and my friends from end of snow to start of snow; it was literally what we lived for. So, this set, especially the volumes II and III, is heaven on earth. The memories it brings back are crystal clear- baseball cards, sitting at Fenway watching Williams, Piersal and Malzone, and Saturday afternoon games on TV with Dizzy Dean and Buddy Blatner.
However, in that "idyllic" youth, there were obviously some things that I missed as well. All three of the DVDs, but especially #III, provide some outstanding social commentary about the people and the times, The players were essentially serfs for the owners and the racial injustices and inequities were horrific. In many ways, I'm not sure that things today are much better, but they certainly are different.
This set is a wonderful remembrance of a time that, for many of us, was almost mythical in its enjoyment. In addition it provides a healthy dose of reality for those of us who, even today, might remain somewhat jaded by the past. I heartily recommend it to baseball fans of all generations!

Structured as a star vehicle for country singer turned actor Kenny Rogers, Six Pack is an amiable little film that aims low but showcases the pleasant and easygoing charm of its star. Rogers (The Gambler) plays a down on his luck race car driver saddled with a half dozen delinquents. As he tries to resurrect his fledgling career, he bonds with the little waifs and they form a sort of family, even as they are pursued by a corrupt sheriff who wants to send the kids to an orphanage and ruin Rogers' comeback. A blatant knockoff of films like Smokey and the Bandit, this family-oriented movie works best as a breezy comedy of errors, with the hapless racer contending with his unruly brood as they stay one step ahead of the law. --Robert Lane
Description
Kenny Rogers Is Back On Track With A Half-Pint Pit Crew That Can't Be Beat! Kenny Rogers stars as Brewster Baker, a stock car driver chasing a comeback until a gang of expert thieves steals his new engine. But these are no ordinary car strippers: Brewster's been boosted by a teenage orphan (Oscar® nominee Diane Lane of UNFAITHFUL) and her five car-crazy young brothers. The kids are on the run from a crooked Texas sheriff. Brewster needs a top team of fast mechanics. From small Southern speedways to the NASCAR Grand Nationals, can the most unlikely pit crew in racing history take Baker all the way to the checkered flag? Anthony Michael Hall (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, THE DEAD ZONE), Erin Gray (SILVER SPOONS), Barry Corbin (ONE TREE HILL) and Terry Kiser (WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S) co-star in this warm and funny family comedy featuring a hot soundtrack of country hits by Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, Merle Haggard and more.

Six Pack movie.......2007-05-16
I saw this movie when it was originally on Pay Per View eons ago. I loved it when I was a kid, but now, I think it's a cheesy romance movie. Erin Gray (from the comedy, 'Silver Spoons') was great in this movie, and it's also one of Diane Lane's first movies, although she made others. Anyway, we all know that Kenny Rogers isn't a strong actor, but pulls this one off well. The movie is full of cursing, all done by the children played in this movie, so I wouldn't recommend this movie to kids under 13. Unless they are used to hearing such words on a daily basis, as mine aren't. This is a rags to riches movie about homeless children stealing their way to the top. Until they steal from race car driver Kenny Rogers, who then makes them work as his crew to pay off their debts to him, do they sort of change their ways. At the end it's all fairy tales and kisses as they are adopted by Kenny Rogers and his new wife Erin Gray. Full of laughes, this movie is funny, but for adults. The acting is cheesy, but remember this is an old movie, so acting isn't like it is today. The kids were great on this movie, but I think they could of done it without all the swearing, and rude acting. I guess that's what makes and sells movies though. Gone are the good old days of "nice movies" that didn't need to be previewed before showing your kids!
Six Pack.......2007-05-12
This is a great light hearted family movie. The racing scenes are good and the story line with the kids is excellent
Great movie........2007-04-01
This movie stars Kenny Rogers. Easy viewing, fun to watch with the six pack (six children) stripping and rebuilding Bruster Bakers ( Kenny Rogers) Race car. This is a really good movie for the whole family.
Six Pack is an exciting story of adventure and heartache........2007-03-28
Brewster Baker (Kenny Rogers) will steal your heart in this amazing story of how a child's love can completely turn your life around. I loved this movie as a kid and I still love it as an adult. I would recommend it to anyone with a love for kids and/or Kenny Rogers.

From its cleverly choreographed opening sequence to its heart-stopping climax on a rampant carousel, this 1951 Hitchcock classic readily earns its reputation as one of the director's finest examples of timeless cinematic suspense. It's not just a ripping-good thriller but a film student's delight and a perversely enjoyable battle of wits between tennis pro Guy (Farley Granger) and his mysterious, sycophantic admirer, Bruno (Robert Walker), who proposes a "criss-cross" scheme of traded murders. Bruno agrees to kill Guy's unfaithful wife, in return for which Guy will (or so it seems) kill Bruno's spiteful father. With an emphasis on narrative and visual strategy, Hitchcock controls the escalating tension with a master's flair for cinematic design, and the plot (coscripted by Raymond Chandler) is so tightly constructed that you'll be white-knuckled even after multiple viewings. Better still, the two-sided DVD edition of this enduring classic includes both the original version of the film and also the longer prerelease British print, which offers a more overt depiction of Bruno's flamboyant and dangerous personality, and his homoerotic attraction to Guy by way of his deviously indecent proposal. In accordance with the cautious censorship guidelines of the period, Hitchcock would later tame these elements of Walker's memorable performance by trimming and altering certain scenes, so the differences between the original and prerelease versions provide an illuminating illustration of censorship's effect on the story's thematic intensity. Beyond all the historical footnotes and film-buff fascination, Strangers on a Train remains one of Hitchcock's crowning achievements and a suspenseful classic that never loses its capacity to thrill and delight. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Strange thing about this trip. So much occurs in pairs. Tennis star Guy (Farley Granger) hates his unfaithful wife. Mysterious Bruno (Robert Walker) hates his father. How perfect for a playful proposal: I'll kill yours, you kill mine. Now look at how Alfred Hitchcock reinforces the duality of human nature. The more you watch, the more you'll see. "Isn't it a fascinating design?" the Master of Suspense often asked. Actually, it's doubly fascinating. Hitchcock left behind two versions of Strangers on a Train. The original version (Side A) is an all-time thriller classic. A recently found longer prerelease British print (Side B) offers "a startling amplification of Bruno's flamboyance, his homoerotic attraction to Guy and his psychotic personality," according to Bill Desowitz of Film Comment. The laying bare of Bruno's hidden nature, along with the great set pieces (head-turning tennis match, disintegrating carousel) and suspense as only Hitchcock can deliver, makes for a first-class trip.

Stranger things have happened! Another Hitchock classic!.......2007-05-14
This is one of my most favorite movies and wow, Granger stole the movie from Walker. Walker died soon after making this movie, but it was a true classic. This movie is reasonably priced on Amazon, so buy it with true faith in how great it will be. The movie lasts for generations. I enjoy it every time I see it.
Never talk to a stranger.......2007-04-04
In Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a train" (1951), Robert Walker gave a remarkable and disturbing performance as Bruno, a spoiled playboy - psychopath who came up with a brilliant idea of committing a perfect murder - find a stranger who hates someone strong enough to wish them dead and swap murders with him - he kills yours, you kill his. While on a train, Bruno introduces himself to a handsome rising tennis star, Guy (Farley Granger) who is going through a rather nasty public divorce with his unfaithful wife Miriam in order to marry the woman he loves, Anne Morton. Guy hates his wife but would he kill Bruno's dominating father if Bruno murders his wife?
One of the most discussed and analyzed Hitchcock's films, "Strangers on a train" is considered one of the most satisfying thrillers ever. It is based on the early novel by the master of the psychological crime thrillers, Patricia Highsmith and it is a great artistic achievement in the thriller genre due to the masterful and creating Hitchcock's directing. Many scenes stand out and some are simply carved in the viewer's memory like the head turning tennis match with only one head never turned and the eyes fixed on Guy's's face and these are Bruno's eyes.
Beware of Friendly Well-Dressed Strangers.......2007-03-24
Two cabs drop off two men at a train station in Washington DC for long distance travel. Bruno Antony makes his acquaintance with Guy Haines, the tennis star. Their characters are quickly established. Bruno is a too-friendly stranger (a bad sign?), a ne'er-do-well rich man's son. Bruno has the idea of committing the perfect murder: no motive to point to the killer. Guy humors Bruno instead of telling him where to get off (not a New Yorker). Guy's wife, pregnant with another man's child, no longer wants the divorce. Guy is so angry he threatens to strangle her. We see Bruno described as a "naughty boy". Bruno's father threatens to get medical treatment for him. [Does the apple fall far from the tree?] So Bruno goes ahead with this imagined contract, He stalks Miriam, Guy's wife, who goes to an amusement park with two men. [This shows popular entertainment before television.] And Bruno carries out his self-appointed mission.
Guy returns on another train. Bruno is lurking in the shadows of night to see him. The police drop by Guy's home. Guy visits Ann Morton, a Senator's daughter, and hears of Miriam's murder. There is humor in the Senator's remarks. The professor on the train remembers little. Now Bruno begins to stalk Guy. [The police don't notice this?] There is a funny scene at the tennis club where people's heads move mechanically, except for one man. Bruno's conversation with the Senator shows his increasing insanity, and so does his trick with the old lady. He is so weird it can create a scandal in Washington! Ann Morton figures out what happened: her sister Barbara resembles the late Miriam Haines! The watching detectives also see that "something funny is going on".
Guy calls Bruno to tell him his plan will be followed. [We see a watchdog that doesn't bark as a stranger?] There is a surprise here! The police learn of Guy's absence from home. Ann visits Bruno's mother, but little is accomplished. Bruno plans his revenge. Luck upsets Bruno's plan when the lighter slips from his hands. A crowd watches its retrieval. Once again Bruno visits the amusement park [remember them?] waiting for the darkness to cover him so he can plant Guy's lighter at the crime scene. The merry-go-round plays "Ain't We Got Fun". Guy shows up to follow Bruno, a fight on the carousel while "The Band Played On". There is a dramatic finish to the ride, and the truth is discovered at last when it slips from Bruno's hand.
You can pick out some faults in this story, but it seems quite good with its mixture of drama, suspense, and humor. Raymond Chandler wrote the screenplay.
Strangers on a Train.......2007-03-19
I'm not a real Hitchcock fan, but this movie by far is my favorite of anything he's done. The story line, suspense and drama is absolutely first rate. If you want to try a Hitchcock film, this one is it.
strangers on a train.......2007-03-09
This Albert Hitchcock film based on a Patricia Highsmith novel was not successful by normal standards when released. long undervalued as one of Hitch's suspense movies, it is now being given the credit it deserves. This movie is both sudtle and startling in revealing the underbelly of those attractive people who walk among us harboring malice and death. Like Highsmith's Ripley character, Walker plays a composed neurotic as he convinces a stranger on a train to swap murders with him. Problem is only one of them was serious. Grand fun, and the ending will blow you away.

150 Episodes of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-06-24
Ultimate TV Westerns is a collection of 150 episodes from 29 different Western TV shows from the days when Hollywood knew how to make great Westerns on both the big and small screens. I paid $21.99 for my set and considering that you can pay $5 and higher for just 4 episodes of one of these shows, you cannot complain about the price. The reason why you can get so many episodes for such a low price is that all of these shows are in the public domain. The quality of the prints used in this collection vary, but overall you will get a fairly decent picture on your screen.
The really great thing about this collection is that it is not limited to the usual suspects, that is shows such as Bonanza, Cisco Kid, Jim Bowie, Lone Ranger & The Rifleman that are quite easy to find and obtain. The collection also includes such shows as Cowboy G-Men, Hudson's Bay, Pistols & Petticoats and Bat Masterson.
What a Great Value!!.......2007-06-18
OK, dim the lights, sit back, and return to those "thrilling days of yesteryear". Black and white TV when men were men, and women were women. Smoking six guns that could fire 50 shots without reloading. 150 episodes for about 17 cents each. How could you go wrong?? I remember watching these when they first came out, and they're as great as ever. It's a shame they only allow a rating of 5 stars!! Mill Creek has done it again.
A trip down memory lake.......2007-06-12
The quality of the writing in these western episodes from years ago are not up to, say, "Lonesome Dove," the best TV western ever. In fact, the stories on these disks are more than a little shallow and the acting is no better. But writing and acting are not what make these fun. The Lone Ranger never won any awards. Nor did Roy Rogers or the Cisco Kid. That said, I enjoy these immensely, and I'm hard pressed to say exactly why. Perhaps it is because I am young again as I see these often grainy black and white and smeary color "reruns." If you want a little nostalgia, these disks will provide it. If you're looking for art, look elsewhere.
150 episodes Ultimate Westerns........2007-05-28
5 Stars I am in TV Cowboy 1950s heaven.
The print quality varies from mint to poor with each episode.
There are some faults, the first two eps. of "The Gabby Hayes Show' are the same, "The Lone Ranger" part 2 is the second half of part 1 but with the missing bit included. and One of the Cisco Kid eps has the wrong title. and Sterling Hayden is not in "Death Valley Days" as listed on the back of the box.
buy this you will love it.
ULTIMATE TV WESTERNS -Blazing Good Value!.......2007-04-18
There are numerous TV Western collections out there on the dvd praire and all showing real signs of age and neglect. However here is one thats sure to delight anyone who grew up playing cowboys & indians in the 1950's and 60's. Again, the quality isn't too bad considering they haven't been really professionally restored the way most movies are. But remember, when we first used to see them on TV at that time, the TV picture via the old aerial, wasn't always too great either. TV stations before tape, showed these episodes via telecine, that is they physically ran 16mm prints on special movie projectors. Even though the exspensively produced "Bonanza" was the first TV Western to be aired in color, thanks to those RCA sets which the show did so well at selling. The first show to be shot in color was "The Cisco Kid". Years earlier and on a shoe-string budget and with 16mm cameras. The producers were smart to predict that color was coming and gave that particular show an even longer life in syndication. At their height in 1959, there were 48 westerns on the air, mostly half hour shows of course, but they dominated our living rooms morning, noon and night.
Let's face it for the money, this collection is a better steal than anything ever taken in one of those endless stage or bank robberies, these oaters are always depicting. And for anyone who grew up after their intial runs and even the many years of syndication, these shows are an education. A look at a perceived simpler time with simpler values!
Oh! one other thing pardner -try to get hold of a copy of TV's Western Heroes hosted by Will "Sugarfoot" Hutchins. It's the perfect companion to this set, as not only profiles the shows, but shows the very classic commercials that inter-rupted them. That plus network promos and bloopers. HAPPY TRAILS!

This is another collection of Disney shorts set to music, but this time the formula works. That's predicated on the inherent strength of the individual pieces and almost all of them come through. Surprisingly, two American folk heroes, Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, are the stars of this show, with rousty little tunes, humor, and compelling linear story lines (a rarity in most of these shorts). Even the shorts that are weak in one area, thematically or musically, make up for it in another. There's very little of the Disney animators attempting to be 1940s modern, thank goodness, and there's a sterling quality in the depth of the art work. A definite plus to an animation (or Disney) collection. --Keith Simanton
Description
In the grand tradition of Disney's greatest musical classics such as FANTASIA, MELODY TIME features seven classic stories, each enhanced with high-spirited music and unforgettable characters! Donald Duck -- an all-time Disney favorite -- puts on a display of jazzy antics as the star of "Blame It On The Samba." Music becomes a real adventure for a busy bumble bee in "Bumble Boogie." From the mischievous young tugboat in "Little Toot," to the heroes of legend and myth in "Johnny Appleseed" and "Pecos Bill," this feast for the eyes and ears entertains with wit and charm. A timeless addition to your video collection, MELODY TIME is a delightful Disney classic with something for everyone in your family!

melody time.......2007-01-11
This is one of the great classics of the past. It is Walt Disney's Pecos Bill with Roy Rogers doing the narrating. Johnny Appleseed and a few others. I have looked for this on DVD for a while and finally found it. It is definitely worth getting to add to your disney collection or for the kids. You just don't find movies like this anymore. If you want to bring back a piece of your childhood don't wait to purchase this DVD.
Disney at its best!.......2006-12-31
It was such a joy to pop this in the DVD player and watch all the old shorts and cartoons from Disney that never seem to make it on the Disney channel anymore. Ultimately I purchased two copies of this for myself and my brother once I discovered the DVD contained the well-loved Disney short "Lambert the Sheepish Lion". But it also contains many other forgotten favourites. If you love the Classic Disney, you won't want to pass this up!
Roy Would NOT be Happy.......2006-07-06
we got no further in this DVD than "Pecos Bill", after discovering that they cut out part of the song. yes, it's a DVD called "Melody Time" and they cut out part of a song! I'd like to know the genius at Disney who thought this would be a good idea. needless the say, this item is being returned to Amazon.
Melody Time is good, in parts.......2006-04-19
Melody Time was made by Walt Disney in a time when he needed to make a movie. He was bogged down in helping the USA with information and propaganda during WWII, so he needed something at the end of the war to help raise funds. So Walt Disney takes a series of shorts that have a musical theme in common (and nothing else)pieces them together and creates a feature length movie made up of short sketches. Very similar to Fantasia with the exception that this movie is not even in the same league as Fantasia.
Some of the shorts are really good, and others are rather forgetable. Blame it on the Samba, the bumble bee song, are boring, but their are a few shorts that capture the genius of Walt Disney short films.
1. Johnny Appleseed. This is one of Disney's tall tales that is done so well it could have easily been the signature part of the film, if it didn't have the other short film,
2. Pecos Bill, This short is GREAT! It is told by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. You will also see Bobby Driscol a child star in Disney who ended in a tragic death in his twenties. The story is great, the music is perfect for the piece, this really is a masterpiece found in an other wise average film.
Little Toot, and once upon a wintertime are not as good as Appleseed and Pecos Bill, but they do have a good quality about them that anyone can enjoy.
In the DVD one of the Bonus features is the short, Lambert, the sheepish lion. THis is also a unique little cartoon that is as good as Appleseed, and almost as pecos bill.
I would normally say pass on this little Disney film, but I think that this is the only way you can get Pecos Bill on DVD, so if you like good quality cartoon films by Walt Disney go ahead and pick this one up, but skip over some of the shorts.
A great bedtime video.......2005-10-11
My son is a year and a half and this is his favorite video. It's beautifully done and has soft but catchy music. It's now become a part of bedtime - before my son jumps into bed, he points to the television for me to play this video. We love it so much, I'm on a search for more like it.

Bob Hope returned to the wild West in Son of Paleface, mining the rootin' shootin' genre for gag after gag. Hope plays Junior Potter--another variation on his lascivious, cowardly, yet somehow endearing persona--a college boy who's come to California seeking his father's hidden gold. What he finds is an empty treasure chest, a pile of unpaid bills, vengeful Indians, buxom Jane Russell (as a saloon girl by day, wily bandit by night), and singing cowboy Roy Rogers. It's prime silliness, an ancestor to movies like Airplane! that never let a moment go by without an absurd joke. Russell sashays about in spectacular form-fitting outfits, Rogers yodels a few tunes, and Hope snivels and wheedles his way out of endless scrapes. Good-natured slapstick (though its depiction of Native Americans will raise the hackles on politically correct viewers). --Bret Fetzer

Son of Paleface (Bob Hope).......2006-11-10
Very funny movie but when purchasing remember you require a multi zone DVD player to play them if you live in other countries
Son of Paleface.......2006-08-10
It had good actors and an excellence job and was funny.
Son of Palface 1952.......2006-04-19
Four years after his hit comedy "The Palface 1948" , Bob Hope (1903-2003) returned to the screen as Junior Potter , Son of Painless Peter Potter , the hapless hero of the first film (The Palface 1948) . The Harvard-bred Junior heads out West to claim his fathers inheritance .Returning for the sequel , but in a different role , is Jane Russell (1921 - ) as a outlaw named "Mike" who continually has to save this our hapless hero . Also starring in the sequel is the king of the Cowboys himself, Roy Rogers (1911-1998) and his horse trigger (1932-1965) who portray themselves . Hope teams with the pair to get to the bottom of a gold shipment robbery . Also for the sequel is the oscar-winning song "Buttons and Bows" .Cowriter and director Frank Tashlin (1913-1972) , a former cartoonist and screenwriter of the first (The Palface 1948) . High Quality transfer ! Recommended
Very Funny Western Farce With Bob Hope And Trigger The Wonder Horse In Top Form .......2006-04-06
After the huge success of 1948's "The Paleface", which starred Bob Hope and the very beautiful Jane Russell in a hilarious farce set in the old west a sequel was a logical idea and this time around the jokes and genral scenerio were even better. Relying on the usual Hope format of jokes about current events (for 1952), a good natured jibe at pal Bing Crosby, and with him often stepping out of character during the story, to deliver some of his memorable quips, "Son of Paleface", is one sequel that really does work better than its parent. Apart from the beautiful Jane Russell returning in this sequel playing a different character from the first film, Bob Hope is teamed here also with western star Roy Rogers and his wonder horse Trigger. This makes for some great comedy and the laughs come thick and fast as Bob Hope good naturedly sends up Roy Roger's squeaky clean image and also has some memorable run ins with Trigger that have to be seen to be believed. I generally love the Bob Hope humour of his best films and while this effort comes much later in his illustrious career than such classics as "The Ghost Breakers", and "My Favourite Blonde", it is a memorable effort nevertheless that deserves the classic status that audiences have bestowed on it.
You certainly never go into a Bob Hope comedy like "Son of Paleface", expecting realism and nor should you. What we do get here however is a laugh filled few hours of great comedy, tremendous gags, and often quite a bit of adlibbing. By the early 1950's Bob Hope had his cowardly, wise cracking persona down pat and his Juniour Potter character here is one of his best ever ready with a fast one liner or wry observation about his own cowardly manner. Silly and not to be taken seriously for one minute "Son of Paleface", may be but it is just the movie experience guaranteed to drive away any blues you may be feeling. It's been a very long time since a movie experience has been capable of really doing that and great credit must go to Hope, Jane Russell, Roy Rogers and Trigger for this great piece of old fashioned comedy entertainment that is always worth another viewing of. Enjoy!
Great movie!!!!!!!.......2005-09-07
For me I love Bob Hope so I loved this movie!I also really admire Jane Russell with her eyes that really speak for themselves! I recommend this movie to anyone and I cannot forget Roy Rogers and his sidekick Trigger the horse! Trigger really makes this movie, what a talented animal!!!!!
The story is cute and kind of corny but it's Bob Hope and he can get away with about anything!Oh and of course Bing also has a cameo!!!!!
So to all who read this, the movie is well worth seeing!

As for those who complain about the "quality" of some of these flics, I guess it all depends on how you define "quality". These are old films and you can't expect them to stand up to the picture quality of more current films. If you define "quality" as good old fashion, wholesome, family entertainment, when there were "good guys" and "bad guys", and morality, then they far surpass the trash put out from the 70's and on. I plan to buy more of these 50 movie packs and would recommend you do the same.

GOOD VALUE DVD !.......2007-06-03
This is definately a mixed-bag of Roy Rogers films, but really worth checking out. As stated in a previous review, LIGHTS OF OLD SANTA FE is a heavily edited version, however, UNDER CALIFORNIA STARS appears complete and is 20min. longer +2songs than the Roy Rogers Authorized HAPPY TRAILS THEATER release...& it looks great too!
20 movies here for under ten bucks...& they all are in decent shape (visually), some edited for TV consumption, some complete.
All in all, a good value for your hard earned cash.
Buy this as a starter pack and then look for complete versions of your favorites...& this could be a hard task since Roy's movies were cut for TV eons ago. However, complete versions are out there.
Mill Creek has great packaging and a pretty good product.
20 Roy movies. Under 10 bucks from AMAZON...It's a good value!
Happy Trails.......2007-05-15
When I was a boy in Philadelpia the Saturday matinee was the reigning tradition. When I was very young I might spend the weekend with my grandparents, and my grandmother would take me. Roy Rogers was the staple for the extra matinee special. He was my hero, the good guy who stood for all the right things.
When I became older, in the early 50's, Roy became a Christian in the Billy Graham evangelistic crusade in Los Angeles. He was one of the founders of the Hollywood Christian group, and once again he was my hero. He not only believed the right stuff, but he did the right stuff. He adopted several orphan children. He traveled with the Billy Graham evangelistic Association in their crusades. He worked with the youth of America.
Watching the King of the Cowboys took me back to a better time in this nation's culture. A time when we knew right from wrong, and our heros were champions of the right. We need to get back there, and the Roy Rogers Collection helps us to remember.
Roy Rogers 20 Movie Pack .......2007-05-13
Enjoyable collection of Roy's movies. Quality was better than I expected except one out of my three DVD players could not open one movie. What ever happened to the simple turn on and play system?
Wholesome values my kids really enjoy watching.......2007-05-01
I'm a father of four young kids, and I never watched Roy Rogers before my wife the time my wife bought this DVD set for our oldest son, age 11. I've watched a few episodes, but I'm not a big fan of western genre or old, black-and-white films and shows. That said, I *will* tell you the reaction of my kids: they love the shows!
Although people *do* get shot and killed (the bad guys, of course!), there isn't any of the gratuitous gore common in modern films. Roy sings love songs, rallies the troops, and does what's right -- although he *is* a pragmatist who is willing to bend the rules (or break the law) to ultimately do what he knows is best, right, true.
Most all of the shows are in black-and-white, and they very obviously haven't been digitially restored, which is a disappointment as you see shows on TV.
At least the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and the good guys always triumph. It's suitable for children (if you don't mind the western-style shoot-outs).
On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 5.9.......2007-04-19
Roy Rogers, with his fancy, spangly western clothes, his ornate six-shooters and gorgeous white stallion, once was every kid's idea of what the King of the Cowboys should be. Roy's three-reel movies always took time out for a little music, whether it be by Rogers himself or the Sons of the Pioneers-- the singing group he started out with in 1935 as Leonard Slye. Between 1938 and '51, Roy appeared as himself in over 70 films. Additionally, his western-flavored TV show ran 100 episodes from 1951 to '57.
The ROY ROGERS 20 MOVIE PACK offers a choice selection of Roy's oaters. Along with wife Dale and sidekicks Gabby Hayes and Smiley Burnette, our hero somehow manages to get in all kinds of fixes. Inside of an hour though, the bad guys always lose and Roy and gang will sing a cowboy song or two. It's a surefire formula, one that every fan of Westerns is certain to appreciate.
The rating for ROY ROGERS 20 MOVIE PACK was determined from polling data maintained by a film resource website. On a 1 to 10 scale, the current averaged-out score for this box set is: 5.9.

Amazon.com essential video
Strangers on a Train remains one of Hitchcock's crowning achievements and a suspenseful classic that never loses its capacity to thrill and delight. --Jeff Shannon
Description
En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it won't be easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia appears in this film. The extra features included on the DVD are: Alternate 'preview' version of the film; Commentary by director Peter Bogdanovich, Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stephano, Strangers on a Train author Patricia Highsmith and biographer Andrew Wilson; New making-of documentary Strangers on a Train: A Hitchcock Classic, with Farley Granger, film historian Richard Schickel, Patricia Hitchcock O'Connell and other Hitchcock family members and colleagues recalling the making of this suspense landmark; Three intriguing featurettes: The Hitchcocks on Hitch, Strangers on a Train: The Victim's P.O.V., Strangers on a Train by M. Night Shyamalan; Alfred Hitchcock's Historical Meeting, a vintage newsreel.
