Amazon.com essential video

An episodic account of a family of roving sheepherders in Australia. Paddy Carmody (Robert Mitchum) loves being "someone whose home is where the sun goes down," but his wife (Deborah Kerr) and teenage son are tired of the nomadic life and want to settle down. Director Fred Zinnemann (From Here to Eternity) takes a wonderfully laid-back approach to this likable material, emphasizing the refreshingly grown-up relationship between Mitchum and Kerr as well as the stark scenic attractions of Australia--a continent that, in 1960, was still unfamiliar terrain for the movies. Puckish, portly Peter Ustinov provides the lion's share of the comic relief. One of the high points is a sheep-shearing sequence (the normally self-assured Mitchum was so nervous about accidentally harming an animal that he required a few bottles of beer for fortification before shooting the scene). The Sundowners scored five Oscar nominations, including acting nods for Kerr and Glynis Johns, but won none. --Robert Horton

Description

In the Australian Outback, the Carmody family--Paddy, Ida and their teenage son Sean--are sheep drovers, always on the move. Ida and Sean want to settle down and buy a farm. Paddy wants to keep moving. A sheep-shearing contest, the birth of a child, drinking, gambling and a race horse will all have a part in the final decision.

5 out of 5 stars The Sundowners.......2007-07-02

Filmed on location, this breezy Western from Down Under earned five Oscar nominations and has weathered well over the years as a mini epic about freedom and family bonds. Mitchum and Kerr square off nicely as hardworking but happily married roamers, and even manage to hold their Aussie accents in check most of the time. Peter Ustinov, playing a chipper ex-officer who comes to live with the Carmody family, provides some of the film's highest humor, especially in his flirtatious relationship with hotel owner Glynis Johns. What makes a man wander? ZInnemann's "Sundowners" provides no answers, but it's sure fun to tag along.

5 out of 5 stars Just see it - you won't regret it!.......2007-04-26

Fred Zinnemann's on the top of his game with much better form with The Sundowners, one of those films that's so good that there's really not much to say about it other than to reiterate what a total delight it is to watch. It's a perfect mixture of great albeit largely invisible craftsmanship and extreme likability, managing to fill its cast from top to bottom with people you'd want to spend time with in a film without a single mean bone in its body that somehow manages to avoid turning into sentimental slop. Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr, both sporting very passable Aussie accents, are a perfectly matched pair who truly do seem to belong to each other despite their differences while Peter Ustinov's scene-stealing Remittance Man who becomes part of their extended family by default is all the more memorable for not giving into the actor's instinctive tendency to overplay his hand (his scene about the captain's hat or his definition of being cashiered as "a promotion from the army to civilian life" are throwaway standouts). One of the best times I've had watching a movie for ages.

Along with a good transfer, the DVD also includes the original trailer and a four-minute black and white behind the scenes short narrated by the author of the novel the film is based on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Aussie Movie.......2007-04-06

I have been waitng for the release of this DVD for a very long time. I first saw the movie in 1960 and also watched it every time it was shown on television in Australia. The film is based on the original novel by well known Australian author Jon Cleary (which I might add that I have a copy of all his 32 books) Jon is 90 years old and his latest book entitled "Four-Cornered Circle" has just been released. I can't recommend this movie enough, it is a GEM. It was made in the early days of the film industry in Australia and it was necessary to include well known international film stars such as Mitchum, Kerr, Ustinov and Johns in order to sell on the international market back in those days. Most of the other actors were Australians. This is not the case anymore as Australian films now stand on their own two legs. Great movie, go out and buy a copy, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Oldie from Oz.......2007-03-08

Good script. good actors / actresses. Fabulous scenery.
A real Ausie gem. The comparison of Deborah Kerr in this and then The King & I, is quite the opposite. Robert Mitchum & Glynis Johns add to this exceptional movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sundowners.......2007-02-23

I've always loved this movie for the Dimitre Tiomkin score. Unfortunately a sound track album was never released (as far as I know) and to have the dvd is wonderful.

Big bad Bob Mitchum: Seriously, is there anybody you'd rather watch in a movie? Mitchum had the cool looks, a dancer's sense of balance, and a thoroughly modern amusement about his own stardom. Somehow he made you invest in a movie, while simultaneously communicating his own smirky suspicions that the whole thing was a joke. Mitchum gets boxed in Robert Mitchum: The Signature Collection, a six-disc batch of random but rewarding Mitchum vehicles. Highlights are two noirish outings, and two prestigious auteur pictures that allowed Mitchum to play outside his usual job description. The one authentic noir is Otto Preminger's Angel Face (1952), with Mitchum as an incredibly passive hero bewitched by Jean Simmons' spoiled rich girl. True to its title, the film is utterly deadpan in tracking the downfall of Mitchum's easily-seduced male.

The quasi-noir is Macao (1952), a compulsively enjoyable piece of nonsense produced by the ever-meddling Howard Hughes. It's credited to director Josef von Sternberg, but it was largely reshot by Nicholas Ray (according to a Mitchum-Russell interview included on the disc, Mitchum wrote some of the new scenes). Doesn't matter; the combo of Mitchum and Jane Russell (re-teamed from the even kookier His Kind of Woman) is enough to carry this slice of backlot exotica. Both actors look skeptical about the material and amused by each other, and Russell gets to sing "One for My Baby."

Home from the Hill (1959) is an underappreciated change of pace for both Mitchum and director Vincente Minnelli. Mitchum, all authority as the super-manly patriarch of an East Texas family, supplies the brawn; Minnelli brings the same sensitivity to the emotional effects of color and movement that he brought to his musicals. Biggest surprise here is that two young-cub Georges, Peppard and Hamilton, are both very good in the male-ingénue roles. Another long film, Fred Zinnemann's The Sundowners (1960), is a gentle and wise account of a nomadic family of sheep-herders in Australia. Mitchum and Deborah Kerr bring a beautiful sense of mature romance to their relationship, and Zinnemann catches the beauty of the country. Plus, you learn how to shear a sheep.

The clinker in the set is Burt Kennedy's The Good Guys and the Bad Guys, a 1969 Western that can't decide whether it's sending up High Noon or playing it straight. Mitchum's the aging Marshall eased out of his job, George Kennedy is the equally aging varmint whose gang (led by whippersnapper David Carradine) plans a train robbery. One can imagine John Wayne as the Marshall and Mitchum as the rogue, but the movie would still fall flat. Finally, The Yakuza (1975) finds Mitchum in his weathered seventies form, and easily the best thing about Sydney Pollack's stately film. The Paul Schrader-Robert Towne script heads to Japan for some cultural lessons and much finger-severing. All in all, the set shows the range of a perpetually underestimated actor who never stopped being cool. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Robert Mitchum - The Signature Collection.......2007-05-09

This is another Warner Home Video boxset very well produced. Worth to own.

4 out of 5 stars subtitles?.......2007-03-19

What happened with the french subtitles on this item? Has Warner decided to remove the subtitles on all their titles now? What a disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Robert Mitchum collection.......2007-03-13

What can you say about this collection except that it is a keeper. Robert
Mitchum can walk thru a small, short movie like "Not As A Stranger" and he
makes it good. )Well, in that movie, Sinatra helped.) Regarding this box set, "The Sundownders" and "Home From The Hills" are unacclaimed masterpieces. "Macao" and "Angel Face" are classics. "The Yakuza" stands
out by itself. "The Good Guys And The Bad Guys" is a well-done western
with humor added.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Mitchum the signature collection.......2007-03-09

The collection has some of his best performances. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Warner boxsets.......2007-02-10

This is one of the best of the Warner "Signature Collection" boxsets, because it collects some of the most interesting (if not as well-known or popular) titles starring Robert Mitchum. For any "auteurist", this collection is essential, because it contains important works directed by Otto Preminger (ANGEL FACE), Josef von Sternberg (with an assist - actually, a studio-imposed take-over - by Nicholas Ray: MACAO), Vincente Minnelli (HOME FROM THE HILL). There's also THE SUNDOWNERS, possibly one of the most charming movies directed by Fred Zinnemann, THE YAKUZA, a deliberately provocative melodrama - one of the first to attempt to graft Asian genre conventions in an American framework - written by Paul and Leonard Schrader and directed by Sydney Pollack, and THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS, a journeyman Western directed by Burt Kennedy. The transfers are exemplary, and ANGEL FACE (one of the moodiest and most psychologically complex of film-noirs), MACAO (with some elaborately decorated sequences which show von Sternberg's skills at their best), HOME FROM THE HILL (perhaps the most operatic and ripely detailed of Minnelli's melodramas) and THE SUNDOWNERS (a relaxed and tender family chronicle, set - at that time - in the rarely seen Australian outback) make this package worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Western....good print.......2006-08-21

THE SUNDOWMERS (1950) was a Alan LeMay/Templeton production, via Eagle-Lion, which competed briefly with some of the larger releasing studios in the later 1940's early '50s. Until VCI's release I'd never seen a good print of it, either on VHS or DVD. The VCI technicolor print is very good, and purchasers will not be disappointed. The film boasts stellar performances by an underrated Robert Preston and, in a sometimes comic role, Chill Wills. Robert Sterling is fine as well, but Preston steals the show. A young John Barrymore, Jr., plays the younger brother to Sterling and Preston. Eagle-Lion followed THE SUNDOWNERS with a sequel, HIGH LONESOME, starring Barrymore....it's an okay film [VCI has it out as well, in another fine technicolor print], although Barrymore lacks the panache of a Preston. Still, at the inexpensive price asked, worthwhile investigating....
As an earlier reviewer commented, the liner notes mix up Preston and Sterling, but this should in no way deter you from purchasing THE SUNDOWNERS, an enjoyable film and very welcome. Extras include cast bio's and scene selections. Our thanks to the adventuresome folks at VCI who contine to do great work in releasing good prints of some B (and A) level Westerns, classic horror, film noir, adventure films, and serials!

3 out of 5 stars DaViD Pasadena Australia........2005-09-11

VCI should check their marketing notes before release. We are informed on the back cover that Robert Preston is the hero and Robert Sterling is the villain, this is completely wrong. Try the other way about. Also their description of the story line is inaccurate. For the most part the transfer from a technicolor print is very good to excellent. The sound is always audible but has some distortion at times. Enjoyable western with all players in good to top form, the only let down is the direction which lacks cohesion. Over all I was pleased with my purchase, and a good copy on dvd is rare.

3 out of 5 stars OK Movies- poor presentation.......2005-01-13

They say that you get what you pay for and in this bargain price DVD you get two pretty good public domain westerns from the early 1950s, a couple of cartoons and several vintage TV commerials, mostly for children's toys. In all a pretty entertaining package, but greatly marred by a general lack of care in presentation. The print of The Sundowners is especially poor, with washed out color, deep emulsion scratches and missing frames- too bad, it's a pretty good movie with a great performance by Robert Preston as the villian/antihero. The source print for Vengence Valley, a glossy M-G-M release starring Burt Lancaster, is much better, but the presentation is marred by poor mastering which causes the picture to appear fuzzy throughout.

I've always loved this movie for the Dimitre Tiomkin score. Unfortunately a sound track album was never released (as far as I know) and to have the dvd is wonderful.
