"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That's more than the code of a newspaperman in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; it's practically the operating credo of director John Ford, the most honored of American filmmakers. In this late film from a long career, Ford looks at the civilizing of an Old West town, Shinbone, through the sad memories of settlers looking back. In the town's wide-open youth, two-fisted Westerner John Wayne and tenderfoot newcomer James Stewart clash over a woman (Vera Miles) but ultimately unite against the notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Ford's nostalgia for the past is tempered by his stark approach, unusual for the visual poet of Stagecoach and The Searchers. The two heavyweights, Wayne and Stewart, are good together, with Wayne the embodiment of rugged individualism and Stewart the idealistic prophet of the civilization that will eventually tame the Wild West. This may be the saddest Western ever made, closer to an elegy than an action movie, and as cleanly beautiful as its central symbol, the cactus rose. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars John Ford and John Wayne's eighth and penultimate Western together, an elegy for the passing of the Old West!.......2007-07-07

The critics panned THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE when it was first released in April 1962, Not least because it went over much of the same ground explored in FORT APACHE (1948). But the general public thought otherwise and the test of time has proved the latter right. Shot in black and white, with two obviously over-aged stars and mostly studio-bound the only concession to its day was the wide-screen aspect! Gene Pitney also had a huge hit with a song of the same name released at the same time but omitted from the soundtrack because John Ford was said to have hated it!

This dark-tale is of the Old West versus the advancing 20th Century. A train draws into the small western town of Shinbone the only passengers to get off, are Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) and his wife Hallie (Vera Miles) they are accosted by local reporter for `The Star' young Charlie Hasbrouck (Joseph Hoover) followed by his editor Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young). Stoddard reveals that they are in town for the funeral of an old friend Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). In the funeral parlour they find Doniphon's coffin guarded by his faithful black servant Pompey (Woody Strode). Scott persuades the Senator to give his account. Meanwhile ex-town-marshal Link Appleyard (Andy Devine) takes Hallie on a buckboard ride out to Toms burnt out old house, here they find masses of cactus roses in bloom, Link steps down and picks one for her.

Now back in Shinbone the story is then revealed in flashback - A gang led by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) ambushed Stoddard's stagecoach. He tries to defend a fellow female passenger but suffers a savage beating in the process and is left for dead. Tom Doniphon brings him to his girl friend Hallie Ericson at PETER'S PLACE (a venue for home cooking) at Shinbone after finding him on the trail! On discovering who attacked him Doniphon told Stoddard "Liberty Valance's the toughest man south of the Picketwire [River] - next to me". Stoddard is a lawyer by profession and is determined to bring Valance to justice he elicits the reluctant help of Marshal Link Appleyard and Shinbone Star founder and editor Dutton Peabody (Edmund O'Brien) in the meantime he helps out washing dishes and serving tables at PETER'S PLACE, he also runs a class teaching people to read and write, whilst telling them that `the pen is mightier than the sword'. One night Valance and two of his henchmen Floyd (Strother Martin) and Reese (Lee Van Cleef) burst into PETER'S PLACE hijack a table and generally causing trouble, Floyd gleefully points out to Valance, that he has spotted Stoddard waiting on tables. Valance trips Stoddard causing him to drop Doniphon's steak dinner on the floor. Doniphon and Valance square up for a gunfight after Doniphon ordered Valance to pick up the steak, but Stoddard picks up the steak to ease the situation, all concerned know sooner or later Valance will be back.

As the tension continues to mount Stoddard is helping out Editor Peabody who allows Ranse to hang his Attorney at Law sign outside the Star Newspaper Office, he is also going off and practicing with a six gun twice a couple of times a week. Tom Doniphon tells Hallie that he going north of the Picketwire [River] for some time horse-trading on his return he reports trouble brewing with the big ranchers who have recruited Liberty Valance and his henchmen to mess up the coming Territorial Convention for Statehood, Stoddard and Peabody are finally selected as the two delegates required whilst Valance was completely rejected. In an editorial Peabody blackens Valances name. Later Valance, Floyd and Reese beat Mr Peabody to within an inch of his life, Ranse sends the marshal to find Valance for a final showdown. Although Liberty wounds Ranse with his first shot - Ranse somehow manages to get off a shot, Valance falls to the ground and is pronounced "dead" in the street by Doc Willoughby. Stoddard is plagued by guilt and is only relieved when Doniphon fills in the missing details. Following the shooting of Valance, the wounded Stoddard is elevated to super hero known to all as "The man who shot Liberty Valance" he also wins Hallie's hand in marriage and goes back East to pursue a life in politics. Whilst having lost Hallie, a disappointed Tom Doniphon steps aside and retreats to into reclusive obscurity.

Stoddard having completed his story to the press was surprised when the editor tears up the script Ranse asked Scott "You're not going to us the story Mr Scott". "This is the West, Sir". Scott said. "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". Finally Hallie left a cactus rose on Toms coffin as a symbol of their lost love. So with Donophin buried and their business concluded in Shinbone the Stoddards catch the train back to Washington they are welcomed onboard once again by the conductor Jason Tully (Willis Bouchey) Ranse thanks Jason for all his help and Jason replies "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance".

A fine cast with some great performances all round although the likes of Lee Marvin, Edmound O'Brien, Ken Murray and John Carradine "Ham it up a little". Whilst the two leads were in reality too old for their parts with the love interest Vera Miles being some twenty-odd years their junior, she however gives a beautiful restrained performance as the woman torn between two men! Ford too was on top form with the domestic scenes in Peter's Place cooking and serving up the dinner plate sized steaks to a full house followed up by the enevitable washing up - BRILLIANT!

It was near the end now for the most successful Director / Star relationship in making Western Movies. Ahead lay. "The Civil War" chapter of HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962) and finally a non-Western DONOVAN'S REEF (1963). But Big John Wayne was far from finished, increditably over the next dozen or so years, another twenty-one films lay ahead, fourteen of them Westerns including his Oscar winning TRUE GRIT!

This Widescreen Collection DVD includes Sub Titles, Theatrical Trailer and Scene Selection. This film really deserves the full treatment of a Special Two Disc Edition with extras including Gene Pitney's title song. Nevertheless a must for all Western fans, others should enjoy it too!

4 out of 5 stars the man who shot liberty valance.......2007-06-27

The first time I saw "The Man who shot Liberty Valance" was on TCM.I was amazed at the casting of this fine old western and decided to buy it for my library of old movies. I was not disappointed. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, along with Lee Marvin made this far better western than most movies were in it's day! It is fun to see all of these actors in their prime, doing what they do best! Thumbs up!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Western Ever!!.......2007-04-23

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart come together to lead one of the most dynamic casts of characters ever put into a western movie.

Who really shot Liberty Valance?

In a story that speaks to true inner strength and humility, the question is answered after the strangest turn of circumstances sees Jimmy Stewart (Ransom Stoddard) rise from humble (almost cowardly) beginnings to become a very well-respected man of the community. It's only later in life that he learns he's made his name on the actions of John Wayne's character...

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but one thing you learn in this movie is that things are not what they first seem. And that makes the movie WAY ahead of its time!

I am stoked to see it available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".......2007-03-16

The combination of John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin along with Vera Miles and a plethora of talented supporting actors from the John Ford stable make this one of the best westerns. Character development is what makes this film so wonderful. The premise is simple: a man builds his entire life on a legend. Told in flashback, Mr. Stewart's character, Ransom Stoddard, sets the story straight regarding the pivotal moment of his life that paved the way for future achievements. Yet, he fails to recognize that his greatest achievement was not in literally doing the things, but in the courage demonstrated in a time of crisis. "Murder, pure and simple; but I can live with it. Hallie wanted you alive. You taught her to read; now go back in there and give her something to read about." And so he does.

John Wayne plays the "noble cowboy" and shy suitor with his usual easy-going charm. Lee Marvin plays the villain, Liberty Valance, with particular passion, serving a worthy stereotype of the sadistic gunslinger. Vera Miles does a nice turn as the romantic interest for Wayne and Stewart's characters. Supporting cast members Woody Strode, Andy Devine, Edmund O'Brien, Strother Martin are all at of the "Old West Central Casting Department." Together, they make the movie entertaining and special on a variety of levels: action-western, romance, lost love, to name but a few.

The DVD quality is quite good. Although some have bemoaned the lack of DVD "extras," for the price, the DVD offers good value. These kinds of movies are rare today and should be appreciated for the pure joy of filmmaking craftsmanship.

5 out of 5 stars John Wayne at his best!.......2007-03-09

This is a CLASSIC John Wayne movie! I strongly encourage any Duke fans to own this movie. He has often been criticized for his lack of acting ability, but this performance holds up very well next to James Stewart. This is truly a multi-faceted character. Red River and The Searchers are often acknowledged as his best. This one needs to be included in that discussion.

Description

"A Man Called Horse returns at full gallop" (Los Angeles Times) in this exceptional western that follows the plight of a horribly wronged tribe of Sioux Indiansand the quest of the one man who would lead them to victory. The Return of a Man Called Horse is a "visually stunning" (Variety) and "hauntingly beautiful vision of American history" (Los Angeles Times). Lord John Morgan (Richard Harris), disillusioned with the "civilized" aristocracy of England, returns to the American West in search of the vital and rugged life he once led among the proud Yellow Hand tribe. But what he finds instead is destruction: a brutal and bloody war inflicted on his adopted blood brothers by an unscrupulous trapper and his followers. Decimated, enslaved and swept from their home, their only hope of regrouping, retaining their ancient customs and fighting backfor their sacred homeland now lies with Morgan...a man they call Horse.

4 out of 5 stars Rescuing "Yellow Hands".......2006-07-25

I'm always fascinated with books & movies that deal with the interaction of subjects from different cultures such as "Shogun", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Dances with Wolves" or "Broken Arrow".

The original film "A Man Called Horse" (1970) has had a very special place in my memory and heart. Its sequel "The Return of a Man Called Horse" (1976) wasn't so good, nevertheless is quite enjoyable.

It tells the story of Lord John Morgan's return to the plains around 1840. He was languishing at his states in England when suddenly he feels the urge to return to America.
He discovers that the Yellow Hands has been expelled from their sacred lands, her women enslaved and the rest of the tribe condemned to a miserable life due to the "in force" invasion of some fur traders.
The trader gang has constructed a stronghold including cannons and settling allied native around the fort.
Lord Morgan or Horse as he is known to his Sioux kin starts a new epic experience. Self imposing extreme hardships, first to attain a "vision", then he strengths very young tribesmen thru sacred rites, next he trains women to fight and finally devices a plan to expel the usurpers.
The final combat is film's culmination and a very good action piece.

Harris performs again with deep conviction even if the script is not as good as the original one he extract the maximum from his character.
This time Sioux warriors are fleshed by Mexican actors and actresses instead of the multinational cast of the first film, without lose.

Even with its flaws this film moves the spectator to admire and respect Native American culture.

Give this film a try, you won't be disappointed!

Whether fact or fiction, everytime I watch this movie you can taste the era.

4 out of 5 stars The Sioux fight for their lands.......2005-12-06

This is a sequel to the 1970 A MAN CALLED HORSE. In that movie Richard Harris is John Morgan, an Englsih baron captured by the Yellow Hand Sioux in the early 1800s and raised by them; being a great fighter he was given his freedom and returned to England in 1821.

Now, three years later, Harris is bored in England and decides to return to America. When he does he finds the Yellow Hand have been driven off their lands or enslaved by white traders. He leads them in a fight to regain their lands.

The movie is shot almost totally from the Indians' perspective, and great care has been taken to get it right and to treat the Indians and their ways honestly. There is a lengthy self-mutilation ceremony that is quite gory (but authentic); it was cut from some earlier prints as being too graphic, but it's essential as to why the tribe decides to fight for their land (they must purge themselves of the evil spirit first). The really memorable thing about the movie is the photography: the Dakota landscape is spectacular.

2 out of 5 stars What, More Horse Chunks?.......2004-12-15

Harris reprises his weak and tepid role of an 1800's gentleman who can't stomach modern life in England so he goes back to the Plains to find his adopted tribe of Sioux Indians. He finds them on the verge of extinction, starvation and he is there to lead them to new hope, which means bowing to his leadership. Why the Sioux didn't kill him in the first film goes beyond reason. More silly stuff from hippies in the 1970's in this second installment of the wildly popular but empty "A Man Called Horse" saga. Look for a psychedelic scene where Harris is "behind" naked while emerged in color shots of eagles flying in the sky.

5 out of 5 stars Still stands Up.......2004-11-25

The first movie was a departure from the everyday" Cowboy Indian movie with a few good twists albeit you could see them comming. Good story to be told, and Part 2 Still with Richard Harris is one of the best follow up movies to come down the pike for it's Genre. I owned and discoverd part 2 recently and was surprised how good it was, and stood up on it's own. All I'll say is in part 2 Harris becomes restless in England and revists his adopted indian family and it takes off from there. Harris is perfect for the role, an english Gentelman with a conscience.

3 out of 5 stars Nice letterboxed disc from Geneon.......2006-12-28

Spaghetti western collectors should know the Geneon release is a nice letterboxed, widescreen transfer. Colors are slightly faded and its non-anamporphic, but otherwise this is a fantastic looking picture for a budget label. Consequently, I was able to sit back and enjoy the film as intended. Actually it is quite funny at times, and nowhere near as bad as reviews would lead you to believe.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Film Noir "Hunt the Man Down".......2005-01-03

This is NOT the George Archainbaud/Gig Young crime story from 1950. Rather, it's a 1971 spaghetti western directed by Eugenio Martín, starring Lee van Cleef and James Mason.
My review of the Martin/van Cleef HUNT THE MAN DOWN (aka BAD MAN'S RIVER):
Awful. Terrible attempt at fusing comedy, tinkly popular tunes and spaghetti western action. Painful to watch and, because it has such a needlessly convoluted plot, almost impossible to describe. The three stars (van Cleef, Mason, and Gina Lollabrigida) look lost and a little ashamed. Not worth your time at any price.

4 out of 5 stars Beware ! One woman on the loose !.......2004-01-17

A western film that stands upside down right on its head. Many thieves and robbers, on the frontier with Mexico, in the midst of the Mexican Revolution, with Mexican soldiers and Mexican revolutionaries, with all kinds of gangsters and other outlaws, with frightened bankers who get held or blown up, with women who are nothing but entertainment. Well, nearly all of them, except one who is a master mind in getting rich on the back of the thieves and robbers, the soldiers and revolutionaries, the gangsters and outlaws, the bankers and cops when necessary. She manipulates all of them men with her charm and flesh and she gets the money when it is ripe, without even making the slightest effort, except at luring all these men into falling into her trap. And you can be sure she never shuts her trap. Brilliant and funny with a Lolobrigida that is coming of age and starting her lovely and enticing career.

One of Gene Autry's early Republic westerns, the film has plenty of action and songs by Autry and Burdette, along with other musical novelty acts. Gene and his friend Frog help the valley's irrigation company solve the mystery of who's behind the terror tactics of those fighting the dam. In the process, they become implicated in a payroll robbery and must clear their names while pursuing the real robbers and trying to save the dam for the valley's drought-ravaged landowners.

3 out of 5 stars Singing while swinging a gun.......2005-07-30

I saw this on an old video -vhs- that was paired with Springtime in the Rockies. The only great thing about this movie, more or less, is that Smiley Burnette and Gene Autry both sing songs while holding a handgun and swinging it back and forth: Smiley's is "My Old 45" and Gene's is his version of Red River Valley (previously sung solo) later in the film forcing a group of rabble rousers to sing along with him to "Red River Valley" instead of wrecking the town. Fortunately, in this film, Smiley Burnette does not put on women's clothing!

2 out of 5 stars Not up to par - DVD wise........2003-10-27

This movie is the original of the re-released version known as Red River Valley, a VHS copy of which I have. This DVD is of medium quality as it appears to have been made not from a film print but from a VHS tape. The double shadows and ghost effects are obvious. MY Goodtimes EP mode VHS copy was far better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Man Of The Frontier.......2002-01-01

Another title for this movie was Man Of The Frontier. Gene delivers cattle to a small town which is having a struggle keeping swindlers from shutting down the dam that supplied water to the valley...Smiley Burnette is his sidekick and at his funniest best! Lot's of action from this early movie made in the late 1930's. You will see a rising star really doing a dangerous stunt himself. Autry did alot of his own stunts and in this one almost got sweep down the river because of slippery moss as he was wading across the dam according his film biography. So watch this and see him progressing on his way to the top!! What can you say!! He was a HERO!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic Western Comedy.......2003-11-30

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC WESTERN STARRING LEE VAN CLEEF & GINA LOLLABRIGIDA.......2003-09-21

Robber Roy, King loses his wife Alicia, to the revolutionary, soldier, Montero. Despite their rivalry, however, they collaborate in an attempt to rob the Mexican government of $1,000,000. With a great cast, performing at their best, and wonderful original sets, Bad Man's river is certainly a cut river is certainly a cut above the usual western fare.

        Description

starring Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett (1936) Gene becomes a ditch rider at a new dam under construction; the previous riders were killed. He has to both survive and find out who's behind trying to keep the dam from being built. Tex Ralph's Westerns #29 B-Westerns strongly evoked traditional American values - honesty, courage, hard work, fair play, and that a good little man can always kick the butt of a bad big man. In the darkness of the theater and afterwards, out in the Saturday afternoon sunlight playing cowboys and Indians, long before political correctness changed the name of our favorite boyhood game, we knew we were right and lived in the greatest land of all... because Gene and Roy and Hoppy and all our other heroes said so and showed us how to live a good moral life by riding hard, drawing fast, and never, EVER stealing a horse or rustling a cow. "Tex Ralph's Westerns" is a weekly TV show on cable channel 20, URTV, in Asheville, North Carolina. Author Ralph Roberts chooses exciting B-Westerns and hosts each episode. Currently there are 53 movies in this series, all available on DVD.
