The scenes of dogfights and wild wolves hunting game are carefully shot to avoid bloodshed (the opening disclaimer takes pains to remind viewers that all such scenes have been simulated), but they may still be too intense for young children. Good movie ---but nothing like the book.......2007-05-31

I had read White Fang with my 8th graders recently and thought it might be good to compare with the movie. WOAH! Who is Jack? Where was Weedon Scott? Gray Beaver is actually kind of a nice guy in this movie. It was a good adventure movie, but if you are expecting it to be like the book, think again. It WAS good to show the students that movies aren't always accurate to the book, and that was a good lesson to teach. I would have liked this production to be truer to the novel, but not a bad movie to enjoy with the family.

White Fang.......2007-05-12

A very well orchastrated and touching sequel to that age old classic "Call of the Wild." I loved the book and the old movie, and this has proven to be a classic in the making to match it. The actors were believable and had you right in the midst of their struggles, clashes, and victories. Heart tugging and a tear jerker at times. It is definitely a keeper and well worth to add to ones library of films.

Delightful Surprise.......2007-04-29

I own this movie. First saw it on satellite because I love Jack London and the TIVO caught this because it is based on his novel. Even though it is different from the novel it captures the spirit of his story and as Ebert says, it is great entertainment in its own right. Anyone who loves canines is going to love this movie. Even some people I know who don't love canines, still loved the movie.

I liked it so much I bought the DVD. Excellent story, excellent soundtrack (the music is beautiful), excellent cinematography, excellent acting by both man and beast. Four stars because as like another previous reviewer, to release a movie as beautiful as this one in pan and scan instead of widescreen is a crime. Why Disney? This movie deserved widescreen. This movie is quality, maybe the best Disney live action movie, surely the best Disney live action movie I have ever seen. Good for repeated viewing at my house and well worth the purchase.

What does this have to do with Jack London's book?.......2007-01-09

I love Jack London's books and have since childhood, so it's hard for me to understand why Disney would take a classic book title and make up a new story to go under it. I re-read WHITE FANG two months ago and there is precious little in this movie that was in the book. Jack London did not write kiddie books (nor did Anna Sewell, for that matter) and I understand how difficult it would be to adapt his works to the screen and get a family rating. Even so, people who read and loved the book and expect to see an adaptation of the original classic might well be terribly disappointed. If it's a good film and a good original script, then it should be allowed its own title and the Disney writers should get the credit for the story.

The far country of the title is Alaska, where James Stewart, a cold-hearted cattleman, and his sidekick Walter Brennan, a garrulous old codger, drive a herd of cattle to cash in on the gold rush. John McIntyre plays his nemesis, a magnetic but corrupt Roy Bean-like judge and merchant who preys off the miners passing through his town and steals Stewart's cattle in the name of justice. Stewart, after signing on to lead saloon owner Ruth Roman's wagon train to the mining camp, steals back his herd and makes himself a respectful enemy: "I'm gonna like you. I'm gonna hang you, but I'm gonna like you," grins McIntyre. The rest of the film is a battle for Stewart's soul, between resolute individualism and community activism, between bad woman Roman and good girl Corinne Calvet (one of the film's weakest elements, admittedly, as the sparks between Stewart and Roman are far more exciting than Calvet's silly kewpie doll in flannel). The cliches ride again.......2007-05-31

If this western thrills you, life must be pretty dull. The plot is barely understandable within the first 45 minutes. No characters emerge as more than one dimensional. Ruth Roman, huge bra and full makeup on the trail, smirks a lot. Corinne Calvet, 30 years old, is supposed to be a sex-starved teen and is given many embarrassing lines. Walter Brennan plays Walter Brennan. The villains sneer and scowl. Jimmy Stewart glares a lot and is supposedly tough. And then the big shoot-out. Save your five bucks; the scenery isn't worth it.

Some nice location shooting is wasted in a standard western. The female characters are particularly irritating and one-dimensional. This is definitely the worst Anthony Mann/James Stewart pairing.

The traditional plot, situation, and dialog are compensated somewhat by the wonderful scenery of the Canadian Northwest, evocatively captured by Mann's camera...

Stewart's familiar supporting cast (Jay C. Flippen and Harry Morgan) made their presence with Walter Brennan, the most decorated character actor in American Movies with 3 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor to his name... Brennan contributes his usual well known portrayal as an eccentric old companion of good spirit and intentions...

Stewart is a Wyoming cattleman who wants to make enough money to buy a ranch, so he drives his herd clear to Alaska and on to Dawson, in Canadian territory, where he sells them...

Along the trail he meets the baddie who runs the town behind a corrupt sheriff John McIntire... They try to steal him his cattle... Later, in Dawson, McIntire and his gang reappear, this time interfering with Stewart's gold claim...

In the film, Stewart has two leading ladies to contend with: Ruth Roman, a bit too precious to qualify convincingly as a tough sweet gale weathering the worst vicissitudes of the territory and the more gentle, the French Canadian girl Corinne Calvet who does create a nice portrait of a decent girl with good instincts... In conventional fashion, Stewart is torn between the flamboyant lady-gambler and the wife-candidate...

Anthony Mann's heroes are often thoughtful men forced into hysterical violence by their need to avenge a wrong or shameful past... They are neurotic and cynical - which is hardly surprising giving the amount of rough handling they have to suffer... In "The Man From Laramie" Stewart is dragged through a fire and has his hand shot through; in "The Far Country" he is shot up and thrown into a river...

Mann's villains are among the most corrupt, unbalanced and memorable to be found in any Western before or since, with Alex Nicol in "The Man From Laramie"; Robert Ryan in "The Naked Spur"; Dan Duryea in "Winchester'73" and the depraved, grandiosely evil Doc Tobin of Lee J. Cobb in "Man of the West" taking the highest honors...

If one ever needed convincing that Westerns are a genre to be taken seriously, the work of Anthony Mann would be evidence enough..

Great Stewart/Mann Western.......2006-10-30

The Far Country was one of the great collaborations between actor James Stewart and great director Anthony Mann. As all of their films did, The Far Country features great performances, a keen literate script, and wonderful direction.

Stewart plays a cowboy assisted by eternal codger Walter Brennan in driving cattle to Alaska. As always in the Stewart/Mann films, Stewart's character is a loner with a past, and he turns his back on what happens in the Alaskan town he settles in, which is ruled with iron-fistedness by John McIntire. McIntire cheats, kills, and run roughshod over everyone, but Stewart does nothing to stop him until tragedy ensues.

The Far Country is a great Northern Western, full of action and fury, but it is made complete by a wonderful partnership that made some of the best films of the 50's. And The Far Country was one of those films.

The movie begins in Seattle in the spring of 1896 where Jeff Webster (James Stewart) leads a herd of cattle that are to be loaded on a paddleboat headed to Skagway, Alaska. At the dock, Webster meets up with his longtime sidekick Ben Tatum (Walter Brennan). Shortly afterward, it's revealed that while driving the cattle from Wyoming, Webster shot two of his cowhands for allegedly trying to rustle his cows. But due to conflicting accounts, he's a wanted man by the law and eludes the authorities while boarding the boat with the help of Ronda Castle (Ruth Roman) and arrives in Skagway with his cattle. While herding the cattle through the streets of Skagway, a small stampede ensues and interferes with a public hanging. Webster is arrested by a corrupt judge named Sheriff Gannon (John McIntire) and loses all of his valuable cattle as restitution for the minor damage and short interruption. This sets up the rest of the movie where Webster and Tatum have no choice but to look for gold in the lawless Yukon where greed, corruption, brutality and even fatal hostility run amuck.

The one thing that sets this film apart from other westerns is the absolutely beautiful location shots in and around the Canadian Rockies. The color cinematography is gorgeous although it's surprising and somewhat perplexing that Universal chose to present this film in a fullscreen format instead of widescreen. Jimmy Stewart plays one of the more complex and sometimes disturbing heroes as he at times chooses his own self-interests over moral decency. I also enjoyed Walter Brennen who gives a stellar performance as the venerable sidekick. Besides John McIntire, there are also many other recognizable Hollywood veterans in this film including Jack Elam, Harry Morgan and Steve Brodie. I can't say this is the greatest western ever, but its easily ranks within my Top 5.

The fullscreen technicolor presentation is very nice. It's not quite restored to perfection, but it comes close and sometimes the colors fade in and out. There aren't any bonuses except a trailer, which is a shame since the location shooting must have been an amazing adventure in itself.

Great family entertainment, good clean fun........2002-10-25

My kids really like Savage Land, and know just about every line of dialogue, as well as all of the lyrics to the songs performed by the Kansas City Thrush. Charming kids, very likable female leads, and a good bunch of funny bad guys makes this film very accessible and enjoyable for family entertainment. Can't wait for the DVD version, and hope there will be some bonus features (hint-hint?)

Adventure In The Great Outdoors.......1999-08-31

Two children, and two single women struggle to survive after their stagecoach is ambushed; Gunslinger Vivian Schilling should have shot the painfully dreadful Singer Charlotte Ross to move the film up to five stars. Otherwise, great cast, great script and a lot of fun.

5 Star movie but a 2 star restoration.......2006-07-28

This version of "Tumbleweeds" from Image Entertainment was a great disappointment to me. The William S. Hart classic deserves better treatment. Billed as a "restored" version, it is anything but. The print is scratchy and grainy. To make things worse, some of the original opening title sequences have been replaced with modern computer generated titles. The black and white movie has been tinted to a yellowish sepia tone further detracting from the original film. Better copies are available on budget labels.

TUMBLEWEEDS is a fitting coda to the career of arguably the greatest cowboy star of the silent era, William S. Hart. It is also a grand introduction to a viewer unfamiliar with his work.
Usually I don't mind watching a dvd in sequence, but TUMBLEWEEDS opens with an introduction, "Farewell to the Screen," Hart filmed for the 1939 reissue of his 1925 silent classic. Hart, decked out in cowboy hat and bandana against a desert landscape tells us a little about the film - it's about the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1889. He also tells us why he retired from movies and how important his career was to him. Listening to him we hear a speech that borders on the maudlin, and the impression isn't relieved much by the swelling violin under-score. Hart's voice reminds me a bit of a water-down Franklin Roosevelt (Hart was born in New York and moved west in his youth.) None of this is unpleasant or even out of place, but it leaves an incongruous memory when the title card reads a drawling "varmint" or "I reckon." If you're new to Hart, as I was, I'd suggest you watch the movie before playing the introduction.
Hart plays `tumbleweed' Dan Carver. A tumbleweed, Carver explains to pretty Molly Lassiter (Barbara Bedford), is a footloose and rootless man of the open range. Hart was 60 years old when TUMBLEWEEDS was filmed, and although he probably never looked his age (he just wore that bandana higher and higher off his neck, I guess) it's a little strange to see him aw-shucks a-courting the 23-year-old Bedford.
Well, the love story is secondary, anyway. TUMBLEWEEDS is famous for the opening of the strip scene, and the sequence leading to the "maddest stampede in American history" is brilliantly edited. It is a quick cut montage of troopers checking their pocket watches to a penned Hart to the anxious and distraught girl to yet another shot of an advancing wall clock. Finally the cannon is shot and the race is on. It's a timelessly beautiful bit of film art.
Another scene I was particularly fond of occurred a little earlier in the movie. The government ordered all cattle removed from the strip prior to the run of the homesteaders. Hart, riding point, and four other tumbleweeds rest their horses on a rise and watch the cattle being rounded out. The men identify the vanishing herds - those are the Circle Dot, those are the Diamond Bar. Hart removes his hat and announces "Boys, it's the last of the west." The others remove their hats as well and the camera holds them in a medium long shot for a few long seconds before fading to silhouette and then to black. It's a understated moment, and the fact that it comes in Hart's final western gives it an added poignancy.
TUMBLEWEEDS was transferred from a restored print, but the restoration was done in 1975. Anyone expecting a digital restoration will be disappointed. There are scratches and flares a-plenty, although not to the point of distraction. It also contains the "original piano score" of William Perry. The score was written for the 1975 restoration and not for the original release. Still, it adds rather than detracts from the movie.
TUMBLEWEEDS will reward anyone willing to give a silent movie a go. The acting is naturalistic, there's plenty of action and the good guys win in the end. Heck, we don't even have to squirm through the hero kissing the girl (although I think I remember seeing Hart give his horse a quick peck.) What more could you ask for?

William S. Hart's Lasting Legacy........2002-06-27

In 1925 when TUMBLEWEEDS was released, William S. Hart was 60 years old and been had supplanted at the box office by a host of cowboy stars like Tom Mix who were much flashier and far less realistic. Hart wanted to go out on top and that is just what he did. TUMBLEWEEDS is set during the opening of the Cherokee Strip and his recreation of the mad scramble for the newly opened up Indian lands is a landmark in cinema history which has been copied many times but without the same sense of immediacy that is depicted here. All the elements of earlier Hart westerns are here, the shy hero, the woman in distress, the 19th century code of honor (Hart was born in 1865), rugged action sequences involving Hart and above all the rugged natural locations of a now vanished West. The production values are high, the photography splendid, and the supporting cast top notch especially Barbara Bedford as Hart's love interest Molly. Bedford played strong independent women during her brief career most notably in the 1920 LAST OF THE MOHICANS. This new DVD release is an enhanced copy of the old Killiam Collection VHS version that has been around for a while but it has never looked this good. Also included is the 1939 eight minute prologue that Hart did for the film's reissue. Hart was 74 by this time and his recounting of the making of his films and the Old West that he knew is not only informative but also quite poignant. This film is his lasting legacy, a legacy that stretches from Gary Cooper to Clint Eastwood, and it's great to have it on DVD at last.
