Without becoming breezy or overly sentimental, 'Mr. Holland's Opus' shows us the dilemma of many teachers. How does one juggle all of the piles of responsibility one is given, and how does one rise above the fray to achieve greatness? With many hurdles to overcome, Glenn Holland (in an extraordinary performance by Richard Dreyfuss) comes to Portland's Kennedy High School with the aspiration of employment filler with enough free time to compose his own music. Naive about the demands for extra-curriculars and student tutoring, Glenn, nevertheless, must reinvent the wheel and learn to accomodate his students by taking risks to win their love for music. Locking heads with the vice principal (played with perfect starchy officiousness by William Macy), he nearly loses his job and composure. At home his loving, understanding wife will stand by him, but plausibly loses patience when their own beloved son (who was born deaf) gets the shaft on some quality mentor time. Feeling his pain, we also are absorbed in the lives of key students (in fine early performances by Terrence Howard and [Forrest] Whitaker to name a couple). He gets reprieves with the football coach (Jay Thomas) who offers friendship and a spirited rivalry. With a rising starlet at his school and the soundtrack of their lives evolving to John Lennon, the poignancy of a man who has painted himself into a corner comes to roost.

'Mr. Holland's Opus' is as realistic as it is an emotional dead ringer. Admittedly, I prejudged this movie on the notion that it would be facile, cloying, or overly sentimental. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This movie was smash hit and got Drifus the oscar nomie for best actor. This movie was a smash hit back in 1996 making 83 milion in the United Statee and 103 million world wide. For those of you that loved Forest Gummp you will love this movie. This movie will always be the best Drifuss movie ever made of all time. If one teacher could effect that many kids. Then image what the natios of the world could do in real life. They could come together and put aside their petty differecnes and embrace there fellow man and women. I just have one thing to say God bless you Richard Drifus we need more people like you in these year of war aginst the middle east. Mr. Halland oppus show's the courage and purity that lies in the most seemingly difante of souls. That one man can change the lives of millions of people around him. If we can join together and work with each other instead of destroying and put each other down we can change the world and make it a place of peace for all nations. Christian, Jews, Araibs, Muyslins, Mormons, Japanse Athist everything inbetween from Hindu to Vodo. Together we can face overcome odds that would seem impossible to others. As the old song goes I quote"United we stand divide we fall". I recommend this movie for all ages. There is some mild language but that makes the movie even more phonimal and uplifting. This movie will be an utimate classic for decades to come. Mr Holland's Opus is a real tear jerk you will be laughing and crying at the same time. This movie will make you want enjoy life or in the words of Richard Driffus"Play the sunset!"

Mr. Holland's Opus is such a truly amazing movie! Its one of those movies that you first tune in to for the music, and then realize that it is an inspiring movie. The story of Glenn Holland, a fictional music teacher, who is ousted from his position after 30 years, is extremely touching. At first you don't want to like this man, who thought that he could write a symphony while teaching high school music, but you grow to love him as you see him interact with his students throughout the years. If you like Music of the Heart check out Mr. Holland's Opus.

The role of Mr. Moto is such an intriuging character and Peter Lorre plays him perfectly. Mr. Moto's Last Warning has just the right amount of suspense and chracter development. Very nice clean entertainment.

MR. MOTO bad follow-up........2007-06-16

I purchased Volume One of the MR. MOTO series from Fox, and was delighted with the entire package. The restoration of these films is perfect, and for 1930s' programmers, they are surprisingly exciting, with fine production values.

That said, Volume Two gives us the poorest MR. MOTO features, weak scripts, inept comedy relief. Several of these films need "dramatic relief" from the comedy. It was not WW II that stopped this series;
it was the dwindling quality of the films. Save your money.

Mr. Moto's last Warning.......2007-06-14

This is the epitomy of the Mr. Moto films and is an outstanding example from this series of films. Mr. Moto is traveling by ship to the northern Suez port and is killed early in the film shortly after docking. There is a ring of spies and sabotuers that plan to scuttle the French Fleet at the mouth of the canal to stop all marine passage. Moto wears disquises to remain unknown, and yet mixes in well with the enemy agents to learn what they plan. Comic relief comes from several Brits: the Port Commander, and a self centered traveler who has no common sense. People are killed left and right until Moto swings into action and dispatches the entire band of spys. He takes no prisoners and while his methods seem a bit extreme by today's standards, he eliminates the need for a public trial for these patently unscrupulous men.
This is the movie that pulls together all the parts of earlier films and provides a great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I found it a bit period in nature, but completely satisfying in its means of resolving a weighty problem, including coming back from the dead.

Magnificent Moto.......2007-04-10

Both collections 1 and 2 are fun filled evenings. Invite a few friends over and have a Moto party. MUCH better than a super bowl party - Moto is entertaining and even a bit cheesy-campy - not hormonal on screen or off.

Excellent Adventure/Detective Series.......2007-03-29

The Mr. Moto series is an excellent group of adventure/detective movies. Peter Lorre's characterization as Mr. Moto and a fine supporting cast elevates these movies above the usual "B" detective movies.

The restoration of these films by Twentieth Century Fox is excellent. The picture quality of this set(and its companion set) are far superior to the public domain versions of these films.

Please consider two (2) other related purchases (not to mention to other volume of Mr. Moto films) to become an expert fan of Mr. Moto and Peter Lorre. Howard Berlin has written a concise and well-organized overview of the Mr. Moto series, The Complete Mr. Moto Phile: A Casebook. This softcover book is available for approximately $[...] from Amazon.com. Stephen Youngkin has written a book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre. Youngkin's book is one of the most comprehensive and best researched biographes of a Hollywood star - it is a a treasure trove of information about Peter Lorre. The Remake: Heaven Can Wait

When a boxer (Robert Montgomery) is accidentally called to Heaven 50 years before his time, it's upto celestial executive extraordinaire Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) to straighten out the matter. When Columbia Pictures' financial advisors read the screenplay for the fantasy comedy Here Comes Mr. Jordan, they had their doubts as to its box-office potential. Screenwriter Sidney Buchman went directly to studio president Harry Cohn in an effort to convince him to make the film. Cohn liked the script's uniqueness and, saying that all his bankers wanted was "what sold last year," told Buchman he'd make the picture. To play the saxophone-playing boxer Joe Pendelton, Cohn decided to borrow Robert Montgomery from MGM. Although Mongomery had some initial doubts about his part, he delivered what was to become an Oscar -nominated performance. The film, which received a total of seven 1941 nominations, including Best Picture, won two (Best Motion Picture Story, Best Screenplay). Here Comes Mr. Jordan was so successful, it inspired a semi-sequel (1947's Down To Earth, which starred Rita Hayworth) and was eventually remade in 1978 as Heaven Can Wait.

Alexander Hall's ingenious comedy/fantasy, was a departure for the usually suave Montgomery (father of Elizabeth from TV's "Bewitched"), but he tackles the role of working class pugilist with humanity and heart. The laughs come fast and furious once the befuddled Joe starts occupying the body of business titan Bruce Farnsworth, stunning his would-be killers and servants with a new-found passion for exercise and fair play. And once Bette Logan (Keyes) enters the picture, petitioning for her father (whom the (old) Farnsworth had ruined), a tentative, romance develops. "Jordan" boasts memorable turns from the always reliable Rains, and from James Gleason as Max Corkle, Joe's incredulous trainer. (Re-made by Warren Beatty as "Heaven Can Wait" in 1978).

Mixed emotions right at the end........2007-05-20

When I first saw this film as a boy on TV, I loved it almost right up to the end. I came away depressed and spiritually moved at the same time. As a grown man when I watched it again, I came up with the same impression. It's that bit about Joe ending up with no memory of who he was. Don't get me wrong, I still love this film....Just not that part of the story. Of course the spiritial love ending would have never worked any other way. Sigh.

Finally - Here comes.......2007-04-10

I saw "Here comes Mr. Jordan" when it first played in my hometown theater and loved it! That was 1941,
I have always liked fantasies. I did'nt like the sequel as well. The cast of "Jordan" was so good with probably the best character of all time - Claude Rains. And another in the same class, James Gleason, with bumbling Edward Everett Horton.

It was a fun movie and one I had never forgotten, I use to tell my kids about the movie, never dreaming that someday we would have the opportunity to see it again and in our own home.

GOD . FORGIVE . THEM . FOR . THEIR . COVER . ART.......2007-04-08

Since this is one of my top four all-time favorite films and I love films passionately, I am ABSOLUTELY beside myself in fury and anger at the HORRIBLE packaging on this magnificent film. I could forgive the lack of extras. I know A LOT of people working for these international movie conglomerates don't give a damn about the Classics (or even movies in general, really). But the lack of thought that went into the packaging of this truly great, PERFECT, scene-by-scene-, shot-by-shot, movie is STAGGERING. Not only do they include a throwaway line of dialog in the middle of the images, not only do they clutter it up with a bunch of extras from a scene in the boxing ring... they picture the villianess, not the heroine, with the hero ! Where is the original poster art !!!!! THe insert art !!! The half sheet art !!! The reissue art !!! There . isnt . even . a . booklet . . or . flyer . inside . NOTHING ! This looks like a release that belongs in the cheapie bin with the public domain stuff . Columbia Pictures.. I am shouting . At . YOU !

excellent insight into the leather community.........2007-06-27

When I came out as a part of the leather community, I found it odd that so many of my friends treated me like straight people do when they find out your gay. I was pleased this film included so many different aspects of our community. I think most people think of 24/7 slave master relationships, when you mention leather, it's important to make all the other fetishes visible and thus less threatening for those that are attracted to this outlet for their sexuality.

Interesting take on Leather contests.......2007-06-15

Facinating glimps on what the men who enter these contests are thinking, and why they want to be a title winner, it surprised me, I am slightly involved in the leather community and did not realize what all these title holders have to do for the next year, after winning, it's a surprising journey, my only complaint is that, the material is several years old, and the DVD add makes one think it's recent, still, I am glad I bought it, although I am not sure how often I will look at it.

Very Fun and So Subculture.......2007-06-06

This is one of best documentary that I have ever seen. It is very well edited and you really get into the contest toward to the end. There are few moments you almost cry. It is just so funny. Take your stereo types away and watch it. You will like it.

Sweet Potato Pie is an exact clone of American Pie, down to the sex scene with a pie. The movie is less funny than Pie and it's not as riske. Every scene has rap music, even if it adds nothing too the scene. Sweet Potato had potential, but ends up being a lame wannabe.

To begin with, no one can claim to be a bigger fan of Lana Turner than me. I usually love her films but in this case I was majorly disappointed. In Lana Turner's autobiography she wrote, "I thought the script was stupid. It was the story of a European prince who falls in love with an American nightclub singer. I fought against doing the picture but I lost." Lana also wrote that her co-star, Ezio Pinza, was arrogant, had bad breath, and tried unsuccessfuly to seduce every woman in sight when not working on "Mr. Imperium". Even though I knew what Lana thought of the movie, I still bought the movie (for a dollar), refusing to believe that such a glamorous star could make a flop. I was wrong.

Lana Turner plays the sexy nightclub singer that a European prince (Ezio Pinza) falls in love with, and although she's already got a boyfriend, she slowly falls for the prince. They begin a love affair that will prove to be shortlived. Marjorie Main, Barry Sullivan, and a very young Debbie Reynolds were in supporting roles, but like Lana they certainly deserved better than this near disaster. Ezio Pinza's singing is extremely annoying and pairing him romantically with the beautiful Lana Turner is simply ludicrous and totally unconvincing. The only reason I gave this movie 2 stars is simply for Lana's beauty, but that alone can't save the film. Trust me, this one just isn't worth watching, except of course for the opening scene where Lana wears a very sexy outfit.

MR IMPERIUM is a fine musical from M-G-M, though hardly fits among the studio's all-time classics (hence the reason why this title has slipped into Public Domain territory). Lana Turner's charm and beauty can't help this lumbering turkey. She plays a cabaret star called Fredda Barlo who gets romanced by the son of a European monarch who calls himself Mr Imperium (Ezio Pinza). Marjorie Main and Debbie Reynolds are wasted in supporting roles; and Pinza and Turner have zilch in the chemistry department. Lovers of musicals will get a kick out of it, though.

This is the first in the series where Lucky Luke gets involved in a land feud between the farmers and the ranchers and of course both claim to have a deed to the land. As Lucky investigates the situation he finds out that Mr. Joseph is attempting to sell weapons to both sides and further investigation Lucky Luke discovers that Mr. Joseph is Joe Dalton.

The picture quality of the DVD and the music is excellent.

Weapon Defenses
Mr. Saladino will discuss and demonstrate the stick, knife, gun and cane confrontations. See some very invaluable weapon defenses and the importance of learning and understanding how to put them into great action as a last resort.

The more I watch Mr. Saladino, the more I like what Mr. Saladino teaches. After having watched several of his tapes, I highly recommend this series, based on what I've seen so far. And forget purchasing just 1 or 2 of Mr. Saladino's tapes! Even though each tape can stand on its own, and benefit a person greatly, the real beauty of this system is learning to use and combine what's taught on each of his tapes, especially the last 3 we've reviewed. If a person were to really dedicate oneself to learning each of those 3 tapes, they'd have one heck of a fighting system. And if that's not a strong enough recommendation about this series, let me put it this way, "Because of it's thorough and complete utilization of various martial arts techniques, and it's infinite possibilities, this is THE style I wish I'd started out with 20 years ago!"

Rolls and Falls
This area of instruction is much needed no matter what style an individual trains in or no matter what rank an individual claims to have. Mr. Saladino provides excellent information and training tools on how to effectively fall and roll in a variety of scenarios. This is highly important should an individual get thrown down, need to escape from an attack or would like a new exercise routine to build conditioning and fitness.
