Hollywood's first "psychological Western" and one of Robert Mitchum's best early films, Pursued boasts a dark scenario--by Niven (Duel in the Sun) Busch--about a man psychically scarred by a tragedy his mind refuses to recall. Modern-day audiences will have no trouble decoding the mystery, but that doesn't undercut the movie's dramatic power, or the rugged beauty of what's been put on screen by two master filmmakers, director Raoul Walsh and cameraman James Wong Howe. With seasoned professionalism, they accommodate all the newfangled Freudianism and smoothly integrate the bedrock Western with the inky film noir. The rest of the cast includes Teresa Wright (then Mrs. Busch) as Mitchum's adoptive sister, who may become his lover and/or his killer; Dean Jagger, smilingly sinister as a weasely in-law; and that grande dame of the Gothic, Judith Anderson, as a frontier matriarch. --Richard T. Excellent thriller..........2007-06-27
I wanted to watch this movie for one reason--Teresa Wright. I think she's one of the more pleasant actresses from the 40's, and when I saw she was in a thriller I was, well, thrilled!
I guess this would be classified as a western but only because it takes place in the west. It lacks all of the other markers of a traditional western. While I do like westerns, a break from the norm is very refreshing to me.
The premise is that Robert Mitchum is being "pursued" by a man out to kill him for revenge. WHY he is being pursued is the bigger question, though, and a question I will not answer lest I spoil the film. Just resign yourself to the fact that there is action and suspense throughout.
While I liked this film, it was not overwhelming to me, and that is why I am rating it only 4 stars. Wright is her typical pleasant self, Mitchum is a good hero, and Dean Jagger rounds out the stars as the sleazy bad guy. Had the cast been less with the same story this probably would have bombed. Fortunately for us, they picked the right folks!
If you like suspense, westerns or Teresa Wright you will like this film!
Pursued.......2007-06-25
A unique hybrid of film noir and western, Walsh's masterful "Pursued" boasts one of the darkest scenarios in Hollywood history (thanks to scriptwriter Niven Busch), as it portrays a man victimized by forces he doesn't understand. Walsh, normally a director of action features, handles the ominous mood and Freudian psychological elements with unerring calculation, wrenching a dynamic, tour-de-force performance from Mitchum. With James Wong Howe's lustrous black-and-white cinematography, and high-caliber support from Wright, Anderson, and a sinister Dean Jagger, "Pursued" is one of Walsh's best, and certainly worth hunting down.
THE FORGOTTEN PAST........2005-08-22
What a amazing picture this is. I was up on the edge of my seat, not for climax but all the time.it starts with a beautiful music given by one of the famous musician "MAX STEINER" and the photography in black and white is haunting in itself. The Director raoul Walsh who himself is so famous directed this movie making it a thriller with closeups of handsom Robert Mitchum as Jeb Rand a man of few words was adopted into the family of The beautiful Teresa Wright who also was his step sister and her brother adam when the tragidy befalls and he did not remember ut had flashes of memories of the past.Instead of giving much of the plot it would be nice to find out watching this movie and where Robert Mitchum says to Alan Hale "YOU KNOW I FLIPPED THIS DOLLAR TWICE-AND I LOST BOTH TIMES-LAST TIME I LEFT FOR WAR -THIS TIME I LEFT THE RANCH".Pursued is a good story written by Niven Busch.I did not find anything negative about this movie,it is a stunning movie.
Wild West...say hello to film noir!.......2004-07-28
As other reviewers have already mentioned , this underated classic is a brilliant combination of film noir & the Wild West. The photography is simply amazing. The flashbacks, dreamlike sequences, & one particularly memorable scene in which Mitchum's stepbrother is seen in the background slowly stalking Mitchum while planning to shoot him are what make this an incredible western. Robert Mitchum plays Jeb Rand, the lone Rand family survivor after a bloody feud. Rescued & raised by Ma Callum (Judith Anderson) he grows up with her two kids: Thor (Teresa Wright) & Adam (John Rodney). Jeb gets along with Thor just great, so great that they fall in love! This doesn't sit well with Adam who never accepts Jeb as a part of the family. Their rivalry only worsens as they grow older, eventually leading to tragic results which tear the family apart. Mitchum commands the screen so well with his amazing performance that he makes acting look easy. This is easily his best western & one of his greatest roles of his career. The chemestry between him & Teresa Wright is one of the best things about this classic. Add Max Steiner's music & you've got one awesome film! And let's not forget the underated Alan Hale, who has a small but memorable supporting role as a friend of Jeb's. Considered as the first psychological western, this is an unforgettable gem that you need to add to your dvd collection.
Noir with Cowboy Boots.......2004-07-21
Western noir, and it's pretty good. Angular, shadowy black and white photography (by James Wong Howe), the story told in flashbacks and flashbacks within flashbacks with the resigned narration of Robert Mitchum, a relentless villian, a hidden family mystery that might contain hints of incest...plus gunfights and New Mexico scenery.
Mitchum and Theresa Wright are very good as the possibly doomed couple. Wright seems to me to always have had a "nice girl next door" air about her that, I think, obscured what an excellent actress she was. Not just in Best Years of Our Lives, but look at her in The Little Foxes (where in her first movie she holds up very well with Bette Davis), The Men and Shadow of a Doubt. She knew how to deliver a line. Dean Jagger was almost as ubiquitous a character actor in the late Forties and Fifties as Thomas Mitchell had been in the Thirties and Forties. Jagger usually, it seemed to me, mostly played decent good guys or well intentioned weakings, and with deliberate speech. It was good to see him play so effectively a decisive-spoken out-and-out bad guy.
The DVD transfer is very good, but no extras

Christian Slater is the only reason.............2006-06-11
...this movie is being written about on this site. The script for the movie was pretty bad and the storyline was also poorly written. Christian is a great actor though and the mere fact that he was in this film, made it viewable. Christian plays a headhunter who is absolutely ruthless as he hunts down his
pray. He even involves the persons immediate family by sending them presents etc. In other words, he just will not give up until they sign the dotted line.
Not good.......2006-04-17
Check out this movie if you're in the mood for a cheesy flick with miserable dialogue, hokey action, and an unbelievable story. The directing was pathetic and each actor played their character on one level the whole way through. However, the movie might be good at 3:00 in the morning after a night of partying.
Slater Plays a Dangerous Headhunter: Terribly Directed Thriller with Unbelievable Story.......2005-11-13
'Pursued' is a typical Canadian direct-to-video film with one interesting idea in its center, which is ruined by the inept direction. I know the fans of Christian Slater might look at it differently, but for me watching this horrible thriller turned out one of the most painful experiences. I believe even some of Slater's fans might have felt the same way.
Slater plays a baddie here. He is Vincent Palmer, one of the top corporate headhunter who won't take no for an answer. He wants Ben Keats (Gil Bellows), who invented a revolutionary GPS system, so Vincent uses everything to recruit him. I mean, EVERYTHING.
Even if you don't know the world of executive recruiters (and I don't either), you are going to find Vincent Palmer and his bahaviors so incredible and preposterous. He starts with frequent phone calls, then sending presents, next spying on Keats and his family with monitors, and look! the guy shows up everywhere! Usually what Vincent does is called stalking, but none of the Keats notices this guy played by overacting Slater with menacing eyes is in fact a dangerous man until the very last moment.
What kind of company do you think would hire this dangerous guy with psychotic behaviors, whose dubious reputation can be easily detected on the internet? What kind of police, especially police of Seattle where this film is set, can allow this guy do whatever he wants when there are lots of (yes, lots of ) physical evidence that point to him? Like the PCs in the deserted warehouse? Like the forged signs? Like...
Besides too many plot holes, the acting is so-so at best. In addition to over-the-top Slater and Bellows, Estella Warren and Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan appear. Estella Warren is not much different from her in 'Driven' and 'Planet of the Apes,' and even Michael Clarke Duncan looks as if he does not know what to do in this mess.
'Pursued' and 'Alone in the Dark.' Two of these recent Christian Slater films can easily kill the career, or maybe already did. What ever happened to him?
JOB HUNT.......2005-07-17
The idea of casting usual all-American Christian Slater as a deadly psychotic corporate headhunter was inspired, and although PURSUED ultimately falls apart by the end, it's an entertaining little thriller. Slater plays a headhunter who goes to extremes to ensure that the people he's hunting take the jobs they are offered. His latest target is played by Gil Bellows; Bellows is a computer whiz who has developed a computer chip that when embedded in a person's bloodstream will enable them to be traced. This would be extremely beneficial in tracking missing persons, for instance. Bellows, however, turns down Slater's job offer and that's when all hell breaks loose. Slater stalks him and his family, endearing himself to both Bellows' wife and young daughter, and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.
Slater is devilishly fun in his role, but Bellows seems in a daze most of the time and a stronger performer might have made the whole game more intriguing. Slater is definitely better in this than the recent ALONE IN THE DARK.
Hmmm what happened with the end.......2004-12-25
You know this started really good, Christian Slater gives a pretty good performance but by the end I am left feeling like I am watching a made for TV Movie.. Regular fight suspense at the end could have went a little more the Firm. They used technology in it which could have went a little more Enemy of the State. They used a throw away performance as the guy that helps the pursued just to get him killed and extend the time of the film, mabe they should have spent more time developing the ending story caused I really like the theme..

The villians are evil doers that you will hiss at, the goodies you will root for and along the way you will enjoy this over the top comedy. Buster Keaton plays the role to William, he is one of the heroes of the storyline. This is great fun to watch as the characters whisper to the camera and you are encouraged to hiss and clap along. If you like panto you are going to really enjoy this movie. It is certainly not your average film.
