This HBO documentary is based on a highly original idea: tell the story of baseball from the Great Depression era through the late 1950s using footage from home-movie cameras shot by fans and players. The result is a marvelous look at baseball in America as seen from the ground--the culture of stadiums, the ritual of afternoon games, the spiritually sustaining rivalries. Among the truly unexpected sights is color footage of the 1938 World Series, not only from inside the stadium walls but from the street as traffic cops, crowds, and vehicles amassed. It also covers World War II's impact on the game, and, of course, the heroes, often caught in relaxed, unselfconscious moments.

Arguably more defined and even more lyrical than its predecessor, When It Was a Game 2 moves from a general celebration of baseball culture in America to a specific focus on various facets of the game's history, including the special relationship between game announcers and fans and the farm-team system during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. Brooklyn's assimilation of the Dodgers into their community identity is covered quite winningly as is the heartbreak of the team's desertion to California. Triple Play! But Not Quite An Unassisted One .......2007-07-04

An engrossing three pack of DVDs that shows color film of stars from the Thirties thru the Sixties - there were a few too many "odes to baseball" for me and not enuff ID of the players in the first two DVDs, which made the last disc the most enjoyable for me because more players were identified (and I guess I recognized them better, too) - it would've been even better if HBO had taken the time to identify the other players in the film - sure, we all know Babe and Mickey and Ted, etc. when we see them but it would've been great to see identification of "lesser" players (by "lesser" I mean players we dont recognize right off). But still, plaudits to HBO for doing this series when they did - much better than anything that Burns series did for baseball, which had far too many "odes to New York" for my tastes.

Best Baseball DVD...Ever.......2007-04-18

You'll be amazed at some of the footage here..a nearly ivy-less Wrigley, a ad-filled monster at Fenway, infielders tossing their gloves onto the outfield grass after the 3rd out, and on and on and on. Legends you've only read about or seen still photographs of in living color, many in the prime of their careers. Some of the commentary is a little syruppy, but that's baseball...a must for any fan, regardless of age.

A MUST HAVE IN THE COLLECTION FOR ALL BASEBALL ENTHUSIASTS.......2007-03-20

This compilation of home movies from bygone eras with interwoven poetry by the acting stars of today is classic. It's a must have, feel good set for any real baseball fan. For anyone who grew up in the 50's and the 60's it will touch your baseball soul.

"When It Was a Game" retrospective.......2007-03-19

I have owned the VHS version of WIWaG II for years and rewatched it a few weeks ago. After seeing it, I decided to order the full DVD set. As a boy growing up in the fifties and sixties, baseball was everything for myself and my friends from end of snow to start of snow; it was literally what we lived for. So, this set, especially the volumes II and III, is heaven on earth. The memories it brings back are crystal clear- baseball cards, sitting at Fenway watching Williams, Piersal and Malzone, and Saturday afternoon games on TV with Dizzy Dean and Buddy Blatner.

However, in that "idyllic" youth, there were obviously some things that I missed as well. All three of the DVDs, but especially #III, provide some outstanding social commentary about the people and the times, The players were essentially serfs for the owners and the racial injustices and inequities were horrific. In many ways, I'm not sure that things today are much better, but they certainly are different.

This set is a wonderful remembrance of a time that, for many of us, was almost mythical in its enjoyment. In addition it provides a healthy dose of reality for those of us who, even today, might remain somewhat jaded by the past. I heartily recommend it to baseball fans of all generations!

This is another collection of Disney shorts set to music, but this time the formula works. That's predicated on the inherent strength of the individual pieces and almost all of them come through. Surprisingly, two American folk heroes, Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, are the stars of this show, with rousty little tunes, humor, and compelling linear story lines (a rarity in most of these shorts). Even the shorts that are weak in one area, thematically or musically, make up for it in another. There's very little of the Disney animators attempting to be 1940s modern, thank goodness, and there's a sterling quality in the depth of the art work. This is one of the great classics of the past. It is Walt Disney's Pecos Bill with Roy Rogers doing the narrating. Johnny Appleseed and a few others. I have looked for this on DVD for a while and finally found it. It is definitely worth getting to add to your disney collection or for the kids. You just don't find movies like this anymore. If you want to bring back a piece of your childhood don't wait to purchase this DVD.

Disney at its best!.......2006-12-31

It was such a joy to pop this in the DVD player and watch all the old shorts and cartoons from Disney that never seem to make it on the Disney channel anymore. Ultimately I purchased two copies of this for myself and my brother once I discovered the DVD contained the well-loved Disney short "Lambert the Sheepish Lion". But it also contains many other forgotten favourites. If you love the Classic Disney, you won't want to pass this up!

Roy Would NOT be Happy.......2006-07-06

we got no further in this DVD than "Pecos Bill", after discovering that they cut out part of the song. yes, it's a DVD called "Melody Time" and they cut out part of a song! I'd like to know the genius at Disney who thought this would be a good idea. needless the say, this item is being returned to Amazon.

Melody Time is good, in parts.......2006-04-19

Melody Time was made by Walt Disney in a time when he needed to make a movie. He was bogged down in helping the USA with information and propaganda during WWII, so he needed something at the end of the war to help raise funds. So Walt Disney takes a series of shorts that have a musical theme in common (and nothing else)pieces them together and creates a feature length movie made up of short sketches. Very similar to Fantasia with the exception that this movie is not even in the same league as Fantasia.

Some of the shorts are really good, and others are rather forgetable. Blame it on the Samba, the bumble bee song, are boring, but their are a few shorts that capture the genius of Walt Disney short films.
1. Johnny Appleseed. This is one of Disney's tall tales that is done so well it could have easily been the signature part of the film, if it didn't have the other short film,

2. Pecos Bill, This short is GREAT! It is told by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. You will also see Bobby Driscol a child star in Disney who ended in a tragic death in his twenties. The story is great, the music is perfect for the piece, this really is a masterpiece found in an other wise average film.

Little Toot, and once upon a wintertime are not as good as Appleseed and Pecos Bill, but they do have a good quality about them that anyone can enjoy.

In the DVD one of the Bonus features is the short, Lambert, the sheepish lion. THis is also a unique little cartoon that is as good as Appleseed, and almost as pecos bill.

I would normally say pass on this little Disney film, but I think that this is the only way you can get Pecos Bill on DVD, so if you like good quality cartoon films by Walt Disney go ahead and pick this one up, but skip over some of the shorts.

A great bedtime video.......2005-10-11

My son is a year and a half and this is his favorite video. It's beautifully done and has soft but catchy music. It's now become a part of bedtime - before my son jumps into bed, he points to the television for me to play this video. We love it so much, I'm on a search for more like it.

This collection is well worth the price paid. I haven't viewed all the titles, but those I have are great. As for those who complain about the "quality" of some of these flics, I guess it all depends on how you define "quality". These are old films and you can't expect them to stand up to the picture quality of more current films. If you define "quality" as good old fashion, wholesome, family entertainment, when there were "good guys" and "bad guys", and morality, then they far surpass the trash put out from the 70's and on. I plan to buy more of these 50 movie packs and would recommend you do the same.

*WALL STREET COWBOY (1939) - Roy ventures to New York to try and raise money for the mortgage on his ranch - which happens to be sitting on top of a large deposit of a rare and valuable mineral! Gabby Hayes and Raymond Hatton (San Quentin) co-star and future star George Montgomery (Roxie Hart) is a cowhand.

THE ARIZONA KID (1939) - During the Civil War, Roy and Gabby become Confederate scouts to try and get rid of a vicious outlaw gang. Dorothy Sebastian - former wife of William "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd - plays the girlfriend of the outlaws' leader (songwriter Stuart Hamblen).

DAYS OF JESSE JAMES (1939) - Roy goes undercover as a member of the James gang in order to get to the bottom of a series of bank robberies. Don "Red" Barry (The Purple Heart) plays Jesse James, while Glenn Strange (House of Frankenstein) is Cole Younger.

THE RANGER AND THE LADY (1940) - While Sam Houston (Davison Clark of Reap the Wild Wind) is in Washington, trying to get Texas admitted to the Union, Texas Ranger Roy must deal with Houston's scheming assistant (Henry Brandon from March of the Wooden Soldiers), who is unfairly taxing Texans.

WEST OF THE BADLANDS (1940) - In an unintentional foreshadowing of The Fugitive, Roy plays a young doctor on the run from the law, falsely accused of a horrible crime. Popular character actor Joe Sawyer (The Roaring Twenties) is the ruthless leader of an outlaw gang.

Disc Two

YOUNG BILL HICKOK (1940) - Roy in the title role as the legendary lawman, entrusted with guarding a shipment of gold. Along the way, he gets mixed up with Calamity Jane (Sally Payne, who played Belle Starr opposite Roy the following year in Robin Hood of the Pecos).

YOUNG BUFFALO BILL (1940) - Once again, Roy plays a real-life (though highly fictionalized) western legend. Here, he and Gabby fight off a band of Indians while trying to straighten out a Spanish land grant in New Mexico. Pauline Moore (Young Mr. Lincoln) is the lovely damsel in distress.

BAD MAN OF DEADWOOD (1941) - Roy and Gabby try to restore law and order to the town of Deadwood, which is currently in the evil clutches of a tough gang leader (Hal Taliaferro of Red River). Cinema veteran Monte Blue (Orphans of the Storm) plays the sheriff.

ROBIN HOOD OF THE PECOS (1941) - Roy is a former Confederate soldier who has become a sort of Western Robin Hood and winds up becoming sheriff as he battles corrupt carpetbaggers. Cyrus Kendall (Crime School) is the main bad guy.

SHERIFF OF TOMBSTONE (1941) - In a change of pace, Gabby plays a judge who helps Roy clear his name after being mistaken for a ruthless gunslinger. Addison Richards (Boys Town) is Tombstone's corrupt mayor.

Disc Three

*HEART OF THE GOLDEN WEST (1942) - Roy, Gabby, Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) and the Sons of the Pioneers help a group of ranchers who are being unjustly taxed for transporting their cattle. To circumvent the tax, Roy convinces an old riverboat captain (Walter Catlett of Bringing Up Baby) to let the cows ride down the river.

KING OF THE COWBOYS (1943) - Roy goes undercover to stop a gang of saboteurs who have been blowing up government warehouses to aid the Axis powers during World War II. Russell Hicks (The Bank Dick) plays the governor of Texas and Peggy Moran (The Mummy's Hand) is the damsel in distress.

*SILVER SPURS (1943) - Roy comes to the aid of a young widow who is being swindled out of her ranch by an unscrupulous opportunist (John Carradine of The Grapes of Wrath). Jerome Cowan (The Maltese Falcon) also appears and Trigger really gets a chance to strut his stuff in this one.

THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS (1944) - Roy goes undercover as an insurance investigator to solve a payroll robbery in this murder-mystery change-of-pace story. Dale Evans, in one of her first roles opposite Roy, plays the daughter of an escaped convict!

Disc Four

*HOME IN OKLAHOMA (1946) - Roy and Dale - in a sort of Western version of Tracy and Hepburn - are rival reporters trying to beat each other in getting the scoop on the murder of a millionaire rancher. Frank Reicher (Captain Englehorn in King Kong) appears as a lawyer.

MY PAL TRIGGER (1946) - Roy is unjustly blamed in the shooting death of Gabby's horse. Popular character actor Jack Holt (San Francisco) is the actual shooter. This film was reportedly a personal favorite of Roy's.

ROLL ON TEXAS MOON (1946) - Roy tries to stop a vicious range war between sheepherders and cattle ranchers that has been intentionally started by an unscrupulous businessman (Dennis Hoey, better known as Inspector Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes series).

*APACHE ROSE (1947) - Roy is an oil prospector whose attempts to gain the drilling rights to a prize piece of land are thwarted by a gang of ruthless gamblers who operate from an offshore boat. George Meeker (The Roaring Twenties) leads the gambling gang.

THE BELLS OF SAN ANGELO (1947) - Roy is a border guard who suspects (correctly) that is smuggling silver out of a Mexican mine and "planting" it in his own worthless silver mine! John McGuire (Sands of Iwo Jima) is the culprit, and movie favorite Andy Devine (Stagecoach) plays the sheriff!

Disc Five

SPRINGTIME IN THE SIERRAS (1947) - Roy tries to stop a gang of poachers from killing deer in violation of local hunting regulations and winds up locking horns with the leader of the gang - who happens to be a very attractive woman (Stephanie Bachelor from Lady of Burlesque). Once again, Andy Devine plays the sheriff, and old timer Chester Conklin plays an Old Timer.

THE GAY RANCHERO (1948) - Sheriff Roy tries to stop a gang of crooks from taking over an airport by sabotaging the planes. Crooner Tito Guizar (Mexico's version of the singing cowboy) plays an ex-bullfighter who comes to America to find the girl of his dreams.

GRAND CANYON TRAIL (1948) - A gullible sheriff (Andy Devine again) is duped into investing in a worthless silver mine. Jane Frazee (Buck Privates) is the comic female foil, while Laurel and Hardy nemesis James Finlayson (Way Out West) plays another sheriff.

THE FAR FRONTIER (1948) - Where else can you see Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Annie Oakley and Jingles Jones, all in one movie? That's because Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger), Gail Davis (Annie Oakley), and Andy Devine (The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok) join Roy in this timely story about the smuggling of illegals from Mexico into the U.S.

UNDER CALIFORNIA SKIES (1948) - Roy plays singing-cowboy movie star "Roy Rogers" in this "backstage" story about the celebration of Roy's ten years in movies, spoiled by the sudden kidnapping of Trigger. Child star Michael Chapin (Call Northside 777) is caught up in the danger.

Product Description

1 Classic movies on 1 DVD! Bells of San Angelo (1947) Gridley is mining silver from an old Mexican mine and bringing it into the USA thru a passage into his worthless mine. Border guard Rogers suspects Gridley and finally finds the secret entrance to the Mexican mine. He sends Lee Madison for help only to have her captured by Gridley. Trigger brings help that takes care of Gridley's men and now Roy has to rescue Madison Under California Stars (1948) Roy has just finished his latest film and leaves for his ranch where he will be broadcasting a show celebrating his tenth year in movies. When Roy and Trigger arrive at his ranch he finds Cookie has hired his relatives. Caroline, the only relative that doesn't have a strong resemblance to Cookie, is the horse trainer. Bob Tells Roy a gang of men are hunting range horses. Roy puts a stop to hunting on his land. Pop decides there's money in kidnapping Trigger and demands a $100,000 ransom. McFarland's stepson, Ted, and his dog Tramp, run away and is found hiding in Roy's barn. A trap is set to catch the kidnappers ranch.

A high price for a wooden box.......2005-01-07

First of all the four movies on four discs are black and white not color as advertised.The quality of both audio and video are the originals of the 1940's.On a scale of 1 to 10(1 being the worst)the quality is 1.At times peoples' faces were totaly blurred.The only thing of value is a real wooden box with pictures of "Roy" in color.If you want the best western movie product on the market, buy Hopalong Cassidy volumes one thru eight.You get five movies in crystal clear audio and video(black & white) per volume for $6.99 each at Amazon.

An eclectic collection of Best Picture winners.......2007-02-03

The group of films in this collection is so varied, it would be hard to be a real fan of one of the five and not really dislike one of the others. There's no common theme here, not even a time period. The films included are as follows:

All Quiet on the Western Front (1929-1930) - A group of German schoolboys are encouraged to sign up to fight in World War I. Once they get to the front, they encounter the harsh realities of killing your fellow man up close. It's still a powerful film because it was made pre-code and there was much more freedom to use harsh symbolism than in films made after 1934. It really embodies the antiwar sentiment that was common between the world wars. (5/5)

The Lost Weekend (1945) - This is another really great film. Great acting by Ray Milland as Don Birnam, an alcoholic writer whose brother pays his bills so he can go on drinking. After decades of movies making drunkenness look like great fun, this film showed just how low a man can sink when he really needs a drink. (5/5)

The Sting (1973) - This was a different kind of film to win the Best Picture award. It seems like it should be a film noir, since it is about revenge for a grifter buddy murdered by a mobster, but the mood of the film is actually rather playful. (5/5)

The Deer Hunter (1978) - This is a great film about the effect of the Vietnam war on three friends from Pennsylvania. It is effectively a war movie without a war. The focus is more on what happens before and after the three experience what happens in Vietnam than what happens during their time in the military. (5/5).

Out of Africa (1985) - This is one of those slow beautiful-to-behold but impossible-to-watch kind of movies that the Academy honors every now and then. I've sat through it exactly once, just so I could honestly say I had given it a chance, but I really found it insufferably boring. It's supposed to be based on the life of storyteller Isak Dineson, who lived in Africa from 1913 until 1931 running a coffee farm, and her love for a man that wants to keep his freedom. (3/5)...And I consider myself an easy grader.

If you average the ratings of the movies together, you get 4.6/5, so I round up the score to 5 stars. You basically have four excellent films in this pack and one pseudo-dud. However, your mileage may vary depending on your taste in film. It's a good value if you are trying to collect the Best Picture winners on DVD and you can find it for under sixty dollars, plus its content doesn't overlap with the other Best Picture boxed sets. Overall, highly recommended.
