Mapping the spaces between fortune and degeneracy, Shakespeare and street cant, Europe and the Pacific Northwest, and gay and straight, My Own Private Idaho is the 1991 masterpiece by director Gus Van Sant. River Phoenix gave the most generous and memory-searing performance of his tragically shortened career as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic street hustler in search of his mother. His best friend, Scott, played by Keanu Reeves, is a son of privilege who fosters plans of rejoining the moneyed world of his father after gallivanting with assorted urchins and ne'er-do-wells. The beautifully symmetrical story that emerges between the two is one of friendship, yearning for lost time, and sexual identity conveyed with a poet's eye for landscape. The camera lingers on abandoned houses in golden fields and time-lapse clouds, providing what T.S. Eliot called "the objective correlative"--external representations of interior emotional states. We're treated to striking iconic sequences like a barn falling from the sky and still-life scenes of carnal entanglement. The supporting cast is a rogues' gallery that includes Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Udo Kier, director William Richert, and a variety of "nonactors" pulled literally off the street to provide documentary veracity to a film that gleefully careens into riffs on Henry IV. It's beautiful.

What's also beautiful is the Criterion Collection's treatment of the film's DVD debut. The director-approved transfer successfully conveys the warmth of the film's palette of oranges and browns, and preserves the whimsical atmospherics of the yodeling country music soundtrack. Many members of the original crew contribute their fond memories to the documentary features, which include a conversation between Phoenix's sister Rain and producer Laurie Parker. There are also two lengthy audio-only conversations--one between Van Sant and Velvet Goldmine director Todd Haynes, and another between author J.T. Leroy and filmmaker Jonathan Caouette about their experiences on the street. The deleted scenes mostly suggest alternate endings that Van Sant wisely left on the cutting room floor. A superb example of a beloved film on DVD. --Ryan Boudinot

Description

River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves star in director Gus Van Sant's haunting tale of two young street hustlers: Mike Waters, a sensitive narcoleptic who dreams of the mother who abandoned him, and Scott Favor, wayward son of the mayor of Portland and the object of Mike's desire. Navigating a volatile world of junkies, thieves, and johns, Mike takes Scott on a quest from the grungy streets to the open highways of the Pacific Northwest, in search of an elusive place called "home." Groundbreaking and visually dazzling, My Own Private Idaho is a stirring look at unrequited love and life at society's margins.

5 out of 5 stars "I just want to hold you.".......2007-06-15

This is one of the most beautifully poignant movies I have seen. For me, the movie is about longing for love, for connection with family, and a search for self love. It transcends gender and convention. The cinematography is beautiful, the script is smart, and Mike's (River Phoenix) portrayal of a young and narcoleptic street hustler is, well, riveting.

Thank you, Mr. Van Sant. Thank you for favoring people like me with a glimpse of the world through a poet's eyes, and a bard's voice.

4 out of 5 stars A gripping sense of vulnerability.......2007-06-10

Early into this movie, you see a dilapidated house floating downward from the sky, ultimately crashing into pieces on a country road. Initially this image seems out of place, but you soon realize how perfectly fitting it really is.
This journey recklessly pulls you through the life of a young junkie named Mike (River Phoenix). He suffers from narcolepsy, and during these episodes you get a haunting glimpse into his childhood. I wondered if these awful moments are possibly repressed memories. They seem to have cast a dark shadow over his current position, and Phoenix portrays this predicament all too well.
Keanu Reeves plays his best friend Scott, whom Mike begins to feel a prevalent romantic attraction for. I got the impression that Mike wasn't really gay, he just was in dire need for some sort of physical love and affection from somebody. They both make money as prostitutes, often performing for men with strange fettishes. The strangest thing is that Scott is the son of the wealthy mayor, and this is his way of rebelling I guess.
Scott's character is based on Prince Hal, son of the king in Shakespeare's play Henry IV. I thought it was cool how Van Sant intertwined his own story with this classic literature.
I think this was one of River's last films, if not his last one. I wonder if he got too wrapped up with method acting for this role. His presence does seem to cry out with a sad desperation in nearly every scene here. Overall, the remarkable emotional depth generated from this movie will really stick with you long after it's over.

5 out of 5 stars Van Sant's best film, a true masterpiece..........2007-03-05

This is my favorite Gus Van Sant film. It's an amazingly beautiful work. It annoys me that many critics and some reviewers identify this as a "gay" film, simply because the 2 main protagonists are male hustlers, and Van Sant is gay. This film is beautiful enough for all to get something out of it. The poetry and beautiful simplicity of this film makes it one of the greatest films of the 1990's. Some of the scenes are incredibly lyrical and quite touching. Most films in the 1990's had that smug, "ironic" thing going, but this is a grand exception. Generally, I don't like Van Sant's work. I think a lot of it is overrated, and some of it downright awful (Gerry being his worst film). But I deeply admire this film. It's a sad, painful, haunting, and beautiful film. Its subject matter can be off putting for some, but you need to forget about that. It will prevent you from enjoying a masterpiece....

4 out of 5 stars Please Allow Me To Ramble For A Moment, Would You?.......2007-02-13

I know this review gets a little self-indulgent, but if you'll allow me to get autobiographical for just a second, you'll see why I do.

When River Phoenix breathed his last in front of Johnny Depp's Viper Room on Halloween morning in 1993, I think I was just the right age to feel a certain frisson in his passing that wouldn't have been there a year or two either way. My friend and I came home from a snowy night among trick or treaters to graphic news accounts of Phoenix's passing, and for reasons that made perfect sense to us then, we went out and got this movie on video. Ultimately we ended up buying it and watching it shall we say A LOT till about the end of the year, when new misfortunes came along, eventually in the next spring taking the form of Kurt Cobain's suicide, which trumped all previous newsworthy events in our young lives.

Well, recently I got My Own Private Idaho on DVD, motivated more about nostalgia for ninth-grade and a weirdly River Phoenix obsessed fall than out of remaining affection for the movie itself, but you know, after watching it from my perspective of today, this is a lot better film than for all my sentimentality I'd remembered it being. From its re-telling of Shakespeare with a modern boldness unseen by anything else until Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio's Romeo+Juliet a few years later, to its in-your-face trip into the living hell of junky male prostitutes living homeless in circa 1990 Portland and Seattle, Gus Van Sant's quirky film seems even more an achievement now than it ever did back in the day. In viewing My Own Private Idaho, you get to hear tales of life on the streets as told by real-life hustlers, and you get to see a pre-A-list Keanu Reeves act in his own unique and inimitable style. But above all, to be honest, the ghost of River Phoenix still haunts this movie, and always will. To view it from an all-knowing hindsight and understand that according to so many THIS was the project that introduced the one-time clean living son of hippies to the quick thrill of hard drugs...that hasn't ceased to deliver a punch, even in a more jaded decade such as this one.

If you haven't seen My Own Private Idaho, see it; it's destined to be a classic one day. If it's been a while, see it again. It holds up well and it should tell you something about how much you've changed with time.

Thanks for reading!

Gus Van Sant's often-beautiful 1991 film stars River Phoenix as a narcoleptic, Seattle male prostitute and Keanu Reeves as the rich friend who agrees to help him find his mother. After a solid hour or so of the two traveling on this quest through Idaho and Italy, Van Sant throws a wrench into the works by conjuring a gay version of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I, with Reeves's character as Prince Hal and filmmaker William Richert (who directed Phoenix in the 1988 Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon) as a variation on Falstaff. The experiment is interesting to watch, but you can't help wondering what on earth happened to the movie. Still, the film has a cult status one can't argue with, and Phoenix gives a tragic performance that stays in the memory. --Tom Keogh

A movie about conjoined (or "Siamese") twins and a prostitute sounds like a bad joke or a sleazy porn flick, but Twin Falls Idaho is actually an eerie, atmospheric story about love and mutual dependence. Penny (Michele Hicks) gets called to a dingy hotel room where she discovers Blake and Francis Falls (twin brothers Mark and Michael Polish). When they go into the bathroom to get her a glass of water, she flees--but forgets her purse. When she returns, Blake and Francis don't get angry; they accept her fear and horror with sad resignation. Their vulnerability draws Penny into their lives, as she learns that the illness of one twin threatens the lives of both. Twin Falls Idaho moves slowly, but the pace never drags. The lush cinematography is drenched in color; the makeup, costumes, and set design feel not quite contemporary and combine to give the movie a dislocated, otherworldly look. The movie was written by the Polish brothers and directed by Michael; though it's their first film, it feels confident and has a sweet, melancholy humor. The performances of the entire cast--including supporting appearances by Patrick Bauchau, Lesley Ann Warren, and Garrett Morris--are consistent and strong. Though clearly influenced by David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks), Twin Falls Idaho slowly becomes a unique and affecting creation. The delicate image of the twin brothers quietly whispering in each other's ears will linger in your memory long after the movie ends. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring........2006-12-21

Twin Falls Idaho (Michael Polish, 1999)

Sometimes after I see a film, I want to run out and tell the world about how great it is. Other times, I just have to sit there, with no muscle control or brain function, and wait for the movie to sink in. As the closing scenes of Twin Falls Idaho played out before me, I sat, drooling on myself a little, and just stared.

It's that good.

Blake and Francis Falls (Michael and Mark Polish of Hellraiser: Bloodline) are siamese twins who live in a fleabag hotel. For their birthday, they call an escort service; Penny (The Sheld's Michele Hicks in her film debut) arrives. At first disturbed by their condition, she eventually comes to like them, and convinces them to venture outside their shell. The rest of the world, however, are not quite as understanding as Penny.

Mark and Michael Polish are just brilliant in their roles, and they're backed up by a stable of exceptionally talented actors (Lesley Ann Warren, William Katt, Garrett Morris, Jon Gries, and Sasha Alexander, among many others, show up in roles of varying sizes). The acting talent alone would make it work as an odd, avant-garde stage play. What makes it work as a film is Michael Polish's vision-- not only his sympathy for the subject matter, which can be taken as a given, but his way of presenting it. Polish wanders off into little symbolic, almost magic-realist scenes every once in a while to complement the subtle symbolism contained in the rest of the film, but he never overdoes it; a couple of the scenes get perilously close to cheesily sentimental, but never quite cross the line. (This, though, is the most heavily-debated opinion about the movie, specifically in relation to the bicycle scene-- if you liked that, then you're probably going to love the movie.)

At its heart, though, it's another movie about a love triangle, albeit one with an interesting and original twist, and one that's presented just shy of perfectly. A fantastic film. **** ½

5 out of 5 stars I was not expecting this !!!.......2006-04-27

I would not exactly call myself a softy, but this movie touched just about every emotion possible.

I consider myself a typical guy, and therefore stopped while channel surfing late one night to check out 'Penny'. After a few minutes I brought on the info. on the movie and thought I would check out a little more since the description indicated that the 'hooker' was going to seduce the twins. Ok, what the hell, I'll hang around a bit just to see some skin... Penny is pretty hot.

But within ten minutes I was captured by both the performance of the characters and the writing. Absolutely not the 'run of the mill' kinda of movie. This was so much more than the 'sleaze' I was expecting. This movie is so thought provoking and emotional that I literally had tears in my eyes by the end of the movie. Boy, am I'm glad my girlfriend was not around. Then again, maybe that would have been a GOOD thing.

Anyway, after the movie ended I felt ashamed about what I was expecting, that is after I blew my nose. This was way more of an intimate EXPERIENCE. It'll stick with you for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant.......2005-08-27

A wildly original story, which might have been made into a very bad movie, is told with heartfelt simplicity. The imagery is beautiful, and many of the scenes from this sad, thoughful film will stay with you. The acting is natural and convincing and you will be involved with a group of very unusual characters. This is a work of genius.

5 out of 5 stars Twin Falls Idaho.......2003-12-23

From the restrained colors, music, pacing, acting - every element of this movie was perfectly thought out and perfectly connected.

Including the Polish Brothers in their role as conjoined twins. They allow a peek inside what it is like to be a twin in the first place - but taking it to the most extreme example of two twin brothers that love and hate one another. And live with the knowlege that the weaker of the two has very little time left to live.

And they delicately touch on all the little things that two attached people face daily - from their sleeping routines, to time in the bathroom, being a spectacle in public, their tender love for one another, and the one twin falling in love.

I picked up the movie on a whim, thinking it would be comedic freakshow material. It turned out to be so much better than my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet and Beautiful.......2003-12-18

Since watching this movie almost a week ago, I can think of little else. I am spellbound by it. I watched it a second time the next day. If you are considering watching or purchasing this DVD, here's what you need to know:

The movie is beautifully artisitic, without being inaccesible. The acting is superb, the dialogue enchanting, and the humor in this serious movie is gentle.

The pace is slow, dreamlike, exploratory. There is no big to-do to cheapen the end. Instead there is a feeling of "this is just a piece of life, it began before you started watching, and it will keep going after you get off your couch" Its like watching someone very intriguing in the airport, overhearing a whispered argument or a whispered profession of love, and having your flight called before you can hear how it ends.

If you like action and tidy endings, this is not your film. But if you like dreamy glimpses at the way others might live, this movie will keep you awake for a week thinking of nothing else.

If you're looking for explosions, lasergun battles, or alien spaceships, forget it! IDAHO TRANSFER has none of the trademark sci-fi trappings. What it does have is an excellent story and a terrific actress (Kelly Bohanon as Karen) in the lead. Karen is caught in the middle of a time-travel experiment that proves to be one horrific experience! I like this one a lot. It has that 2001 / PHASE IV atmosphere going on. The ending is bizarre and abrupt, and may leave a lot of viewers unsatisfied. This is especially true if all movies must end happily w/ no loose ends. I watched it w/ someone who absolutely hated the whole thing! I'll watch it again without them...

5 out of 5 stars Not for Armaggedon fans........2005-03-20

Ironically, this film IS about armaggedon, but it is acted, filmed, directed and scored in a diametrically opposed style to the dumb, budget-bloated garbage of today. Incredibly subtle, disturbing and visually spectacular, this forgotten masterpiece is ostensibly about the environment, ecology, and the total consumption of our natural resources---but it has a lot more than that to say.
It ultimately leaves you with an existentialist viewpoint, stated clearly in one character's speech regarding the bleakness of the future and how the self-important idea of the propogation of the human species is, frankly, a crock. An utter masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Low-Key Sci Fi Stunner.......2004-12-17

I first saw this movie about 10 years ago on video and was amazed at how affecting it was. This low-budget sci-fi shocker is about a group of college kids who transport themselves 50+ years into the future and discover that mankind has been wiped out by some sort of natural disaster. Watching it again recently on DVD, I was stuck by the fact that it doesn't seem that out of date. The early 70's fashions are now back in style, so the kids seem appropriately hip, the special effects (while minimal) are realistic, the cinematography is quite good, and the music was certainly ahead of its time. A soundtrack of the film would be interesting mood music. My only complaint is the quality of the disc - looks like someone burned a copy of an old VHS tape right onto DVD. But, since this is the only way to see it (for now), I'll let it slide. This movie has several memorable scenes, including a "transfer" gone bad, the discovery of an abandoned railroad train, and the ending, which seems even more ironic today. If you're a fan of intelligent cinema and don't need to be stimulated constantly by lots of action and violence, then this movie is for you. If not, go rent "The Matrix".

1 out of 5 stars Complete Waste of time / Film.......2004-12-03

The premise seemed alluring... saving the world in secret by use of time travel to the future... But nothing makes much sense in this movie. all of The charactors can't think past their nose. What drives them on? oh yeah their unknown B actors getting paid to play in a truly pathectic Sci-Fi... Like most reviewers I tend not to write about somthing that really just sucks, but I had to this time cause this one pissed me off so. I've seen many B-movie Sci-fi's but this one takes the cake. Of all the movies waiting to be transfered to DVD what Exec. Booted this one into production? Must be another groopie friend of Peter Fonda. I thought with Fonda's name attached to it, it couldn't be half bad. But was I wrong!

3 out of 5 stars So what?.......2003-12-29

The title is the answer to what a woman say after she's transported to the future and finds out she is sterile from the transfer process; she says (as best I can remember after 30 years), "But that will mean the end of the human race!"

I have quoted that line every since; I can't begin to count the number of times. There were 10 people in the theatre, and it was the 3rd day after opening; no one I know has seen it except for the 9 other people I went with. However, like "A Boy and His Dog", it's a film you will never forget.

The ending is also something I've talked about for 30 years; it'll be nice to be able to show this to the many people I've told about it. (I think it should have been a Craftsman screwdriver, and not a Great Neck.)

3 out of 5 stars Idaho in it's pure form.......2006-12-16

I am not a pilot, but been in Idaho a few times, this DVD show's of
the wild side of this state.

5 out of 5 stars "There's actually a place to LAND in there??".......2006-12-13

It's hard to add much to the other reviews above, only confirm them. Having flown for a few years now this is something completely new. We don't have much bush flying up here in western NY needless to say, so this is really my first introduction as to what it's all about. We've all heard the term but I've learned a new appreciation for it now. I always knew the term meant putting an airplane into small places in the middle of nowhere but I always imagined somewhat of a visible airstrip. Oh, these are visible alright, like, after you've touched down maybe! The video does start out a little slowly but soon it progresses from nicely groomed, well established grass strips to ever more difficult places that represent more of a path than a strip. You seriously can't even see exactly where he's going to land on some of them until after you hear the stall horn and you've almost touched down. You think you're pretty good with an airplane? I'm amazed at the kind of places a plane can actually be landed (and still reused!) and learned a whole new appreciation for the term "bush pilot". The narration is just right, he doesn't overdo anything and he just lets the film speak for itself. This is a fascinating video with awe-inspiring scenery and let me tell you, this guy can fly!

5 out of 5 stars Armchair bush pilots dream come true.......2006-08-08

A must have for any pilot. A beautiful show of some of the Idaho No Return Wilderness area. Its amazing to watch the Skywagon get in and out of strips that would make most pilot cringe. Beautiful scenery coupled with a workhorse of a plane. This video has convinced me to get into a mountain flying school and head out next summer.

5 out of 5 stars Idaho Exposed and enjoyed.......2006-05-17

Any pilot would appreciate seeing this video. It is not an instructional video but just a day of flying into some of Idaho's bush country strips. What is amazing is that the difficulty factor goes up on each successive strip visit.

Truly awesome but also enjoyable for anybody who loves the forest and back country trips.

Loved every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing DVD.......2005-12-07

What a great DVD!! :-)) I viewed the first flights, and the tried them to refly in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 with a DHC2- Beaver and an HighRes DEM. Unfortunately I got lost on the first step from Johnson Creek to Big Creek ;-), what a labyrinth! *Don't tell anybody!* I used my GPS to find my way back to U60.

This DVD gives you a great opportunity to take a look into "mountain flying". If I could, I would give it 7 from 5 stars. :-))

Regards

Boerries (Just a "Simulator Pilot" ;-) )
