Description

Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau and Lon Chaney star in this "exciting account" (Leonard Maltin) about a man who made his name fighting Indians but now must use his peacekeeping skills to keep wronged Sioux warriors from massacring a wagon train and a nearby fort! After the Civil War, Johnny Hawks (Douglas), the Indian Fighter, returns to the West and establishes a treaty with the Sioux Indians. But when two renegade frontiersmen (Matthau and Chaney) seeking a legendary Indian gold mine murder the brother of the Sioux chief, tensions escalate, endangering every man in the territory!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Kirk Douglas Western.......2006-12-19

The Indian Fighter was blessed to have two great things going for it when it was made - one was Kirk Douglas, who was a standout in a number of Westerns, including Gunfight at The OK Corral, Last Train to Gun Hill, Along The Great Divide, Man Without A Star, and a number of others. The second was director Andre de Toth, who directed some great Westerns, including Ramrod, Springfield Rifle, and Riding Shotgun.

Together, they tell the entertaining story of Johnny Hawks, "The Indian Fighter," a legendary soldier who nows scouts for a living. As he tries to guide a wagon train to Oregon through Indian territory, Hawks gets in the middle of warring Indians and a defenseless fort. The Indians are upset because white men are trying to steal gold from their land, and the fort's commander is ready to fight, even if it means the death of everyone in the fort. Add Hawks' budding romance with the Indian chief's daughter, and you have lots of excitement.

This is a film that should get more attention than it does, and I hope that the DVD release will open it up to a much wider audience. The Indian Fighter is a very enjoyable Western.

3 out of 5 stars A simple-minded Western with touches of philosophy and not much drive..........2006-11-08

Filmed in Oregon, Andre De Toth's film is a frontier adventure tale of the Great Sioux Nation whose heritage and culture run through the silver screen like a strong steady stream...

The motion picture touches up new ground by giving Indians a little sex appeal... Douglas, as a vigorous frontier scout, tries to attract the Indian maiden Onahti, played by the attractive brunette Elsa Martinelli... The Italian actress is seen bathing in the fresh waters of a river and later captured nude in a transparent voluminous stream...

"The Indian Fighter" concerns the efforts of a wagon train heading for Oregon in 1870... The train stops at a small frontier fort when the Sioux forbid them to pass through their territory... A seasoned scout and Indian expert, Johnny Hawks (Douglas), is assigned by the army to aid them...

Hawks rapidly goes to the camp of the dignified Chief Red Cloud (Eduard Franz) who explains that the trouble was started by white whiskey traders, trying to rob the Indians of their gold...

Hawks promises to settle th situation and the Chief agrees to appear at the fort to sign a peace treaty... However, his aggressive brother Grey Wolf (Harry Landers) repudiates peace talk because he despises all white men as dishonorable...

Douglas' portrait of Hawks is suitably vigorous and possibly comes close to depicting the actual character of such a man - Hawks is a jealous self-confident man who considers the West as his milieu... He declines to open up the West for civilization... He considers the West as 'a beautiful woman' and refuses to share her with anybody... He is a brave warrior who fights Sioux-style, and a shooter who never miss a snake... He respects the Indians as vanquished valiant enemies who deserve to be treated as human beings...

1 out of 5 stars Indian Fighter.......2004-02-24

I was very disappointed with this movie.
I saw the original television broadcast airing of this movie in 1962. Over those 40 years, I still remember scenes from the movie, which were not part of this copy. For example, there was a statement at the beginning of the movie, much like the discalimers of today, which indicated that the Indian would not be speaking in their native tongue so the audience would be able to understand the movie better. In addition, I remember that in the end, a soldier (the bugler), silhouetted by the dusk light was standing on a hill embracing a girl as they kissed.
The story line was weak, nearly uninteresting. I felt fidgety watching this poor film. The only thing, which kept me watching, besides the fact that I just threw away good money on this new release, was the fact that I had fond childhood memories of the Indian Fighter. But, in all honesty, I have pulled better movies out of Wal-mart's $5.88 bins.
The movie DID appear to be choppy in its story line, as though it might have been pieced together, as if the original film had some damaged parts which were left out. Also, the movie ended abruptly, leaving me feeling cheated. There were several scenes, which looked grainy, as though they might have been 3rd generation copies.
I want a refund! If I had sent this in a theater, I would have walked out and demanded back my ticket price.

4 out of 5 stars THE INDIAN FIGHTER.......2003-06-24

Have no idea what the guy who complained about the picture being fuzzy, shifting quality and looking chopped up was drinking the night he viewed this movie. Picture quality was excellent and saw no sign of it being chopped up. An excellent western.

1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2003-05-31

Either the original or transfer was terribly faulty but picture was poor. Aspect changed from moment to moment. Focus was a bit bleary and night shots were too dark to tell what was going on. And the story, it almost seemed like there were scenes deleted as story line had a very jerky feel to it. As a collector of western films, can only say this ranks among the worst I have purchased.

amazing how a movie about sitting bull can have a white man as the star and the title man is really just a costar! as history this worthless and as adventure it does a little better, but not much!
the print here is very bad, with sound drops and some scenes are so washed out as to be unwatchable! i know you sould not expect a great copy at such a cheep price, but you should be able to watch it!!!!! skip it!

1 out of 5 stars interesting.......2006-01-22

Just watched this on TCM. It is amazing that somebody made a movie where President Grant and Sitting Bull were going to sit down together between the two armies and discuss peace, but that Custer screwed the whole thing up on purpose by disobeying orders and attacking the indians while Grant was waiting to be taken to the meeting place. It is certainly sympathetic to the indians, and a bit ahead of its time in 1954 in this respect. Sitting Bull chides one of his braves not to scalp Custer because we do not scalp brave men who died in battle. I recommend that you watch "Little Big Man".

3 out of 5 stars historical and entertaining.......2002-05-13

This was probably one of the better videos recounting the battle
of the little big horn. Only the men involved in this historical
event know for sure what happened, but this seems as close as
any video I've seen, compared to what has been written. Dale Robertson did a magnificent job in his role as the major who
tries to find justice for the indians. I haven't seen Robertson in many romantic roles such as this. Mary Murphy becomes Mrs. Robertson in real life for a short short time in 1956. I would recommend this video if you like westerns.

its a well done movie, good entertainment,Joel McCrea's a good actor, and I can't think of him doing a bad movie

4 out of 5 stars Hero of War Bonnet Gorge.......2005-07-04

Rule #1 - If you want history, read a book.
William Wellman's BUFFALO BILL (1944) stars Joel McCrea as the western army scout Buffalo Bill Cody, hero of dime novels and owner and star of a legendary Wild West show. Two-thirds Hollywood hokum and one-third kind of accurate, it's nonetheless entertaining. What more can we ask from a movie?
The movie opens in an US army outpost somewhere on the western edge of the great plains. Cody acts as scout for the army, as well as liaison with a local Cheyenne tribe. Cody has been a friend of one of the tribes chiefs, Yellow Hand (Anthony Quinn), since they were children. In fact, the movie tells us, Cody saved his life and, as such things go in westerns, incurs a lifelong debt from the grateful Yellow Hand. (NB - The Yellow Hand character is based on a Cheyenne chief named Yellow Hair, who, after Custer's fateful trip up the Little Big Horn, Cody "shot, stabbed, and scalped in about five seconds." Yellow Hair (Hand) is a real character in the Buffalo Bill myth only because he was immortalized in an act in the Wild West show. The act was titled `Buffalo Bill's First Scalp for Custer.' Hardly a way to treat a childhood friend, even in the wild and wooly west.) Buffalo Bill and Yellow Hand do have a showdown scene in the movie, although it's rather honorable and, thankfully, scalping-free.
While an outpost scout Cody meets and marries Louisa Frederici (Maureen O'Hara), with whom he has a son. (The movie omits the fact that the real Buffalo Bill sued his wife for divorce in 1905... okay, I'll quit now. You get the idea.) While there he also meets the mellifluous pulp author Ned Buntline (Thomas Mitchell.) With newborn in tow and Buntline presumably back east creating a legend, Buffalo Bill is presented with his first great decision - the outpost is being abandoned and the soldiers are going to link up with a force in the Sioux Territory: Does Buffalo Bill leave the soldiers to grope their way north through hostile territory and probable slaughter, or does he abandon his wife and child to return east to civilization and safety alone?
If BUFFALO BILL plays a little fast and loose with the facts, its heart is in the right place. Its sympathetic to Yellow Hand's Cheyennes, presenting them as a people who are starved to violence by the wholesale slaughter of the buffalo. "The Cheyenne had no choice," Buffalo Bill says at one point. "It's a bad thing for a man to starve." It's not a sentiment you normally see in a western from 1944. Buffalo Bill does finally make it to the east, and we track his progress from the Astor House to command performances before the crowned heads of Europe.
Although it fails as history BUFFALO BILL is pretty entertaining. Joel McCrea had an easy-going screen persona that works well here, and the beautiful Maureen O'Hara is always a pleasure. Quinn does well (this was well before he began to seriously over-act), and Edgar Buchanan delivers as a crusty old calvary sergeant. The only anchor in the cast is poor, beautiful Linda Darnell as schoolmarm/Indian princess Dawn Starlight. Darnell was not a very strong actress, and her character is a bit of a mystery. She seems to bear an unrequited lover for Buffalo Bill, but it doesn't read right. All the dots don't connect with her character and it looks like some of her scenes, scenes which might have made sense of things, were left on the cutting room floor.
The print was in very good condition, and the colors were quite vibrant. High recommendation for this one, especially for fans of traditional westerns.

4 out of 5 stars Joel McCrea as Buffalo Bill.......2005-05-25

Well,so this Western biopic is wildly off from an historical point of view, but, nevermind, as entertainment it fills the bill and more. BUFFALO BILL is the kind of wholesome, patriotic film that fifty years ago provided solid good entertainment with good production values--and we kinda miss its kind today. McCrea never did a bad job of acting in any of his films, and here he keeps the action going, even when it becomes a bit desultory during the second half of the movie. He really is a pleasure to watch and hear...so easy in the saddle and with his lines. So, lay back and enjoy this film, and with family.

3 out of 5 stars Sanitised biopic.......2004-06-19

This is standard movie biography of a legendary figure of the old West and modern showbiz and it follows the sanitised version of Cody's life perpetuated by dime novel writers such as Ned Buntline .It does not ecplore the gap between myth and legend but instead follows the advice of the editor in the Ford classic " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance " -namely "When the facts conflict with the legend -print the legend "
The Cody of this lavish and colourful movie does not have feet of clay but is presented in an uncomplicatedly heroic and mythic mode which may have gone down well when it was made but which now comes across as horribly simplistic and patronising .
Cody is written and played as a plaster saint -handsome ,deeply moral and a spokesman for the cause of the Native American and one who earns their respect by defeating their war chief in hand to hand combat. The first half while inaccurate has vigour and pace and is entertaining enough but interest sags when Cody leaves the West for Washington and thence to a career as a world travelled circus proprietor
Macrae does a decent job in the title role bringing a quiet gravity to scenes showing the character being reduced to a humiliating side show attraction astride a rocking horse before his return to fame and fortune .There is a customarilly peppy performance from the great Maureen O'Hara and a zestful cameo by Thomas Mitchell as the ebullient Buntline ,Cody's chronicler .
Not to be taken seriously as history but a decent if dated movie shot in lustrous colour and which should please lovers of the Western

4 out of 5 stars A Good Way To Pass The Time on a Saturday Evening..........1999-08-13

This is a good film for all ages indeed. Growing up in Stonewall, Texas (birthplace of Lyndon Baines Johnson), I remember seeing this film with my parents in the theatres when I was 15. The cast is perfect with heavy supporting players such as Anthony Quinn and Linda Darnell. So what lowers my rating by one star you ask? Well, the length. Although it couldn't be more that 100 minutes, there is slightly a tad less action than there is verbal communication and the picture sticks to the same theme too long (i.e. Buffalo Bill's friendship with the Cheyenne Indians). If only the dialouge was a little more fast paced, this film would be of more entertainment.

Yet as my headline reads, if you have not too much to do on a Saturday evening and feel like passing the time with a historic movie, watch this then.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible quality.......2006-02-02

I was shocked the quality of this DVD was so bad. One wonders why a company would even attempt to market something so bad, unless it is merely to make a few extra bucks. Unfortunately, once bitten, twice shy. I would be very skeptical on purchasing any more DVD's from Alpha. Suffice it to say, they put more money into their catalog than the product featured in the catalog. My 8mm home movies from the early 80's were better quality.

1 out of 5 stars What an abomination!.......2006-01-31

What a pity! This reviewer hadn't seen this film since it originally screened in movie theatres circa 1954. By today's standards, the story is stiff, dated, and with hefty doses of propaganda and stereotyping. The acting is not memorable. Nevertheless, the presentation had some merits as the scenery in the original film was quite good and some of the staging was interesting. Despite such flaws, this reviewer, who grew up in the Black Hills and was living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation when the film was made, was looking forward to having the DVD.

But discussing the merits of the film is superfluous, because the DVD presentation is so abominable: Sound is harsh. Picture color fidelity is nil: Greens appear as oranges; other color distortions are rampant across the spectrum of colors and across any given screen image. Aside from the color, to say that the image is grainy would be a gross understatement: As a friend remarked, viewing a regular film with 9 out of 10 pixels being nonfunctional on the HDTV would probably produce a similar result. Though the film was originally done in Cinemascope, it is impossible to avoid some form of distortion on an HDTV 16x9 screen: Either one must be satisfied with a picture area reminiscent of the size of a postage stamp in the middle of the screen, or else there is distortion in ALL OTHER MODES including ZOOM mode. Playing the DVD on an older system seems to fill out the 4x3 TV image, though at what cost this reviewer is unable to say, there obviously being major lost of picture area. But such matters are irrelevant because regardless of what system one tries to use, the cumulative DVD flaws are so bad that this reviewer, in disgust, simply could no longer watch it. It is amazing that such a piece of crap would be marketed.
