It has the indisputably greatest TV theme song ever, not to mention the young Clint Eastwood in a starring role, but if that's all you know about Rawhide, then this four-disc, 16-episode set, the first of two expected volumes from the 1959-60 season, will likely be a revelation. Like many series of its ilk, and other ilks as well, Rawhide combines elements of action, drama, humor, and a little romance. But this is a horse opera of a different color. The action is muted; there's little in the way of gunplay, a lot of scenes are fairly talky, and even though the show is nominally about an endless cattle drive, Eastwood's Rowdy Yates (who appeared in all 217 episodes produced during an eight-year run) and the other hands (including the gruff but righteous trail boss Gil Favor, played by Eric Fleming, and the cook Wishbone, amusingly rendered by Paul Brinegar) don't spend a whole lot of time tending to their cattle, often finding themselves distracted by the turbulent personal lives of the folks they encounter along the way. In fact, while it may be a Western, the show emphasizes characters over cows: the cruel ranch owner (Swedish actress Viveca Lindfors plays a Mexican woman--go figure) whose husband, daughter, and employees all despise her; the punch-drunk old bare knuckles boxer whose widowed daughter-in-law harbors a secret agenda; the Indian cowhand (played by John Drew Barrymore, father of Drew) estranged from his tribe for joining up with the white man. There's also a pronounced psychological element (our heroes match wits as well as weapons with evil townsfolk, Indians, revolutionary Mexicans, and even a killer puma), and a little mystical mumbo-jumbo ("haunted" hills, a Druid curse, the appearance of St. Elmo's fire on the cattle's horns in a lightning storm) to boot. And while Gil, Rowdy and company are sometimes too trusting, they're fair and honest guys who defend strangers, stand up for folks in need, and invariably do the righteous thing. Add to that some nice transfers of the show's great-looking black & white cinematography and a chance to hear Frankie Laine sing "Rollin', rollin', rollin', keep them dogies movin'" twice in every episode, and what's not to like about Rawhide? --Sam Graham

Anyone thinking of buying Rawhide has probably already seen Rawhide. No need for me to write what a great western it is or the number of great actors who started their careers with Rawhide.

I see that they are going the way of other TV shows on DVD and splitting the seasons in 2. I think it's a cheesy scheme for them to get more money from the fan base. I'm sure most of the actors from this show have passed away by now or I'm sure their original contracts could not foresee the advent of DVD technology back in the early 60's so I'm sure royalties probably aren't a big factor in the cost to the consumer. Just pure profit to those producing these DVDs for pennies.

Love the show, hate the price.
Suppose I'll be renting it from Netflix instead of paying 60 bucks for a tv show from the 60's.

I think releasing Rawhide,the second season in two volumes has nothing to do with anything else other that greed. Why sellthe complete season for 34-35 dollars when you can sell two volumes and make sixty dollars. Simple economics.The studios have a cash cow. AND IT'S US!!! By the way, I'm still gonna buy it.

I can't believe the rubbish being discussed here. We have the opportunity to purchase the best western series of all time ever! Then there is no discussion! If you are a dedicated Rawhide fan, especially an admirer of Eric Fleming, then you will buy it. If you are not a true fan , then you won't! You are living in a dream world if you think it will be picked up by time life. Very few series are. The way things are going is half seasons. I completly agree I hate that, but there is no way that I will miss this opportunity. I live in the U.K. I have to pay more to get it shipped but I will gladly do so. If we don't buy it we doom this release to failure and no more Rawhide. Simple choice then- we buy it and grab the chance to view beautiful pristine prints of our heroes.If you can't afford the price you have my sympathies but to doom this releaae to failure out of stubborn obstinacy is cutting every Rawhide fan's throat.

Excellent - still better than most of what is on today. It's great to see all the early stars as guests, and I'm a fan of the cast as well. I think Sheb Wooley & Paul Brinegar were seriously under-rated

This is a very enjoyable set to watch. I was an avid "Rawhide" fan as a kid, and this makes me one again. All the episodes are worth viewing, and seeing good old Mr. Favor and Rowdy in action brings back good memories of the old style westerns.

I bought these for my Dad Before i gave them to him i checked them out 1 of the disk would not play. sent them back got a new set same disk would not play sent those back did not get a new set as i feared the same results.

Well produced film on the life and music of Frankie Laine. Lots of rare footage, wonderful interviews with many stars including Clint Eastwood, Tom Jones, Johnny Williams. It is great to see Frankie Laine himself being interviewed! I'm thrilled with this project. A must for music fans!

i bought this dvd because (at least i think so)it's lou gehrig's only film. the quality of the disc is ok,not great,but ok.the main thing is lou gehrig looks great(his acting isn't that hot,but who cares)and it's nice to see him before als cut him down. really a treasure of a disc and worth the price.
