Thanks to ultracrisp Technirama photography of great mountainside and river gorge locations in Colorado, Night Passage is often terrific to look at; you can almost feel the autumn sun and brisk air. This should have been another classic Western pairing James Stewart with director Anthony Mann. But after choosing the locations, cast, and crew, and directing the precredit sequence, Mann abruptly resigned. He found Borden Chase's screenplay an "incoherent" rehash of relationships and setups from their previous films, nor was he encouraged by Stewart's determination to play the accordion and sing. Stewart's an ex-railroad cop who became a pariah by letting a prisoner--Audie Murphy's "The Utica Kid"--escape. The two cross paths again in a ghost town where Dan Duryea, doing a zany version of his loony outlaw from Winchester '73, has holed up with his gang. Replacement director James Neilson, a newcomer destined for bland Disney servitude, fosters a lot of flatfooted standing-around. --Richard T. Jameson

How Tom Selleck's world-weary cop Jesse Stone became the police chief of sleepy Paradise, Mass., is revealed in this engaging prequel to the first made-for-TV Stone feature, Stone Cold (2005). Selleck is once again well cast as the rough-around-the-edges Stone, whose drinking problem gets him ejected from the Los Angeles police force; he soon finds himself the head lawman in a small New England fishing village, where his slow dissolution continues until a routine domestic disturbance case reveals connections to money laundering and murder, with several of the town's most affluent names as possible suspects. Selleck is well-matched by veteran scene stealer Saul Rubinek, and there's good work by Polly Shannon as a city attorney who becomes Stone's romantic interest, and Stephen Baldwin as an ill-tempered local. Fans of author Robert B. Parker (on whose books the Jesse Stone films are based) and Selleck won't be disappointed by this smart thriller. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

Selleck plays the role of Jesse Stone, a former Los Angeles homicide detective who left California and his ex-wife to become the police chief in a small New England town. Among his many character flaws are his struggles with a drinking problem and lingering feelings for his ex-wife.

Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise Co-starring William Devane (TV's "Knot's Landing"), the TV movie finds Chief Stone (Selleck) settling into his new life in Paradise when he becomes obsessed with finding the killer of a teenage girl. His quest to solve the murder unearths facts indicating there is more to the girl's history than originally suspected and the new clues lead him to probe the Boston underworld.

DVD Special Features for Jesse Stone: Night Passage Include: Digitally Mastered Audio and Video, Widescreen Presentations, Audio: English, French, Portuguese, Thai, Subtitles: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Thai, Bonus Previews, Closed Captioned

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Stone - The Prequel.......2007-07-06

This, the second in the Jesse Stone series of TV movies, was actually the beginning of his adventures in Paradise. It holds its place in the now four adaptations of the Parker novels, with a fifth in the works, and simultaneously begins and continues the development of the lead and supporting characters. So long as the novels are adapted for TV, I'll watch, and so long as they're released on DVD, I'll buy. All who read this, do yourselves a favor, and check them out.

5 out of 5 stars Classic TV.......2007-07-02

I recently got to watch Night Passage on TV and truly enjoyed it. It has a simple yet interesting detective storyline and nice strong characters (Selleck is perfect in the Stone's role, believably flawed as a womanizing drunk), and an allover simple "classic" timeless feel to it in the style of many British TV miniseries or films - and that's a real compliment! (since I believe the British are the best at producing quality work for television.)
Well done!

5 out of 5 stars We need more cops who can get the 'point' across........2007-07-02

Tom does a great job on all for stories. The scenes are pleasant and calm. The crime is cold and solvable. When the legal paperwork won't solve a domestic problem, Chief Stone adds his 'extra' means of enforcement. We need more police chiefs (and patrolmen) willing take the extra means necessary to control the 'bad' element out there. If they had done so when the bad seeds were younger, perhaps they would have chosen a better path. Good writing and directing. Great story. Need more of this caliber on TV and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Stone - Night Passage.......2007-06-25

The entire series of Jesse Stone is absolutely fantastic. It keeps you at the end of your seat. Bravo to Tom Selleck!!!!!! Looking forward to "Sea Change", the fourth in the series.

5 out of 5 stars A nicely done, engaging film...........2007-06-25

This review is for Night Passage, the prequel to
Stone Cold. Both of which originally aired on
television in 2005(Stone Cold) and 2006 (Night
Passage).

Another great film to the Jesse Stone series. In
this impressive prequel we get to see how Stone established
himself as the sheriff in the small town of Sleepy
Paradise, Mass. Selleck doesn't dissapoint as the
rundown, witty detective that has a knack for asking
all the right questions. And the suspicion arises
quickly as he's hired on despite his ongoing drinking problem.
This isn't a "who done it?" mystery, rather a how's-
the-detective-going-wrap-up-this-case type mystery,
where you know early on who's guilty. Stone plods
along methodically putting the pieces together, quickly
sizing people up and questioning everyone in his path, and
it's done so convincingly that you can't help but wonder
what questions will be asked next. The supporting cast is
perfect, especially Stephen Baldwin as the town's abusive
bully. The dialougue flows nicely, intelligently and yet
at a quick pace, even leaving room for sarcasm and banter,
all delivered naturally by the cast.

The setting of the small peaceful fishing town is the perfect
contrast for the big city detective, in creating that fish out
of water aspect. Though looks can be deceiving, there lurks
an ominous danger to Paradise, one in which Stone is
determined to solve.

The movie that made Humphrey Bogart Humphrey Bogart anchors this second DVD box devoted to the mighty star. The Maltese Falcon gets--and merits--the deluxe three-disc treatment, and the other Bogie movies collected here are solid vehicles from his early 1940s Warner Bros. heyday. The essence of Bogart's world-weary yet mysteriously romantic aura is on luscious display, even if most of these films fall just short of classic status.

Bogart's letter-perfect incarnation as Sam Spade, the anti-hero of John Huston's debut film as a director, grounds The Maltese Falcon in a smart, sardonic groove. Even if Spade is one of Bogart's finest turns, it's hard to single out the film's best performance: Mary Astor as the mystery dame who trips off the case, Peter Lorre as the fey Joel Cairo, or Sydney Greenstreet as the massively erudite Kasper Gutman (the latter making one of the great debuts in film history). Dashiell Hammett's best-selling story had been filmed twice before, and both versions are included in the extras here: the 1931 Maltese Falcon, which has a fair amount of cheek and some near-identical snatches of Hammett dialogue as the 1941 film--but without the magic--and the 1936 Satan Met a Lady, which puts the story squarely in the realm of screwball comedy, with Warren William and Bette Davis acting as though they'd wandered into a Thin Man movie. Other extras include a commentary with Bogart biography Eric Lax, three radio versions of the tale, and a short documentary about the Falcon.

Huston also directed Across the Pacific, a fun and somewhat tongue-in-cheek picture that brought Bogart, Astor, and Greenstreet back together. After being drummed out of the military, Bogie finds himself aboard a ship sailing toward the Panama Canal--and as the date of Dec. 7, 1941, looms on the horizon, we suspect intrigue. Also from 1942 is the wisecracking All Through the Night, which is set entirely in a Damon Runyon NYC but nevertheless unearths a nest of Nazis (Conrad Veidt among them) planning a homeland attack.

WWII figures in the other two features. Michael Curtiz's Passage to Marseille (1944) burdens itself with too many flashbacks, but otherwise presents a nicely atmospheric tale of Devil's Island escapees trying to get home to fight for France. Lorre and Greenstreet are back, with Michele Morgan snuggling Bogart in the Casablanca-inspired love story. Action in the North Atlantic (1943) is a more conventional picture, with Bogart and Raymond Massey fighting the war in the Merchant Marines; the topnotch action sequences and crusty supporting cast keep it going. Bogart's covert socking of a loose-lipped bar patron gives us the vintage Bogie. Bartender: "Did you hurt your hand?" Bogie: "Never do." --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars For the Bogart Fan.......2007-03-19

What a great collection of films and some of the best bits are the "extras" on each DVD. The films are typical Bogart as a detective, spy, mercenary etc.

5 out of 5 stars Bogie Know Best.......2007-03-08

Bogart isn't the best actor in the history of film, but his attitude and feel rank make him one of the most memorable and admirable in film. All movies in this kit show off his skills as well as those of the other actors that often worked with him. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Humphrey Bogart, forever a star!.......2007-02-03

Humphrey Bogart is without a doubt, one of the best actors ever to delight the world with his performance. This classic offers a Bogart that is sharp, cynical and virile. As a private eye, Humphrey Bogart is awesome. The dialogue is difficult to follow, but we always select the language option that provides subtitles to assist the hearing impaired; a feature that we highly recommend because this way you do not miss a word that is said. The DVD's offer many advantages; but for us, this feature is simply... the solution we had always looked for to truly understand the messages offered by great movies. There is much action and suspense, keeping you at the edge of your seat, always wondering when violence will take place because of the ferocious interpretations of the actors. With this role, Bogart leaves no question that he is... and shall forever remain... a Star!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Humphrey Bogart espionage love feast.......2007-01-19

HUMPHREY BOGART: THE SIGNATURE COLLECTION, VOLUME 2 has, as its set piece, a remastered studio print of John Huston's incomparable THE MALTESE FALCON (1941). Also included for a comparison is the very good 1931 Ricardo Cortez/Bebe Daniels THE MALTESE FALCON and the mediocre 1936 Warren William/Bette Davis SATAN MET A LADY. But the spotlight is on Huston and company in terms of bonuses that include a brand-new documentary and vintage radio adaptations that offer the fun of the same plot with a different cast.

This DVD boxed set is a love feast for Bogart fans. It also includes ACROSS THE PACIFIC (1942), ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT (1942), ACTION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC (1943), and PASSAGE TO MARSEILLES (1944). All sparkle in brand-new prints and, since is from Warner Home Video and movies made during World War Two, all include a generous array of patriotic wartime dramatic and musical shorts, documentaries, new interview featurettes, cartoons, and theatrical trailers.

ACROSS THE PACIFIC reteams director John Huston with FALCON cast members Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. It is an adventure potboiler that goes from eastern Canada to the Panama Canal, without going near the Pacific. Its climax has espionage activities at the canal, and no one is who they seem.

ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT has an incredible cast, led by Conrad Veidt and Judith Anderson as Nazis. Bogart battles the Gestapo over his right to have the perfect cheese cake in this tongue-in-cheek wartime adventure that is great fun. A 99 year old Vincent Sherman, who directed, helps out on an audio commentary with Bogart scholar Eric Lax.

ACTION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC is about the Merchant Marine in the north Atlantic when it was made (1943). Lloyd Bacon, who directed some wonderful 1930's musical romances, shows his versatility in this exciting adventure that stars Bogart, Raymond Massey, and Alan Hale. The box says the Merchant Marine used this rather downbeat movie as a recruiting tool.

Finally, we have Michael Curtiz' underrated PASSAGE TO MARSEILLES, with seemingly half the cast of CASABLANCA, including Bogart, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, Helmut Dantine, and Sydney Greenstreet. This one is infamous for flashbacks within flashbacks, but with this cast, who cares? Max Steiner did the music, James Wong Howe did the brilliant photography, and a ten-hankie final scene sends the movie into the stratosphere. This one must have really packed a wallop for 1944 audiences torn between good Free France and bad Vichy France.

I highly recommend HUMPHREY BOGART: THE SIGNATURE COLLECTION, VOLUME 2 to the millions of Bogart fans, as well as fans of wartime intrigue movies. And special kudos to Warner Home Video for the generous bonuses and putting each film in its own slim envelope inside a larger box. That shows a lot of class, in comparison to the "don't give a damn" people at Universal Home Video.

3 out of 5 stars COLORADO, JAMES STEWART AND AN ACCORDION DON'T MAKE A MOVIE.......2007-06-13

In consequence of a very weak screenplay, NIGHT PASSAGE is the kind of movie you forget in two days. If you are a movie buff, you'll maybe remember in a few years two or three scenes of the film like the verbal duels between Audie Murphy and Dan Duryea or James Stewart singing with his accordion but that's about all, I'm afraid. I now understand why Anthony Mann left this production after the first day of shooting.

Many characters of NIGHT PASSAGE don't have any consistency at all. For instance, can someone tell me what's the exact function of Miss Vittles, the old lady with the jennies, in the film apart of saying hello to James Stewart and indicating him a shortcut through the mountain. And Charlotte Drew, is she in love with James Stewart or Audie Murphy ? And what are the psychological motivations of Verna Kimball ? And ... so on.

I say it again, this is not director James Neilson's fault if NIGHT PASSAGE is nothing else than an average western. Neilson filmed the Colorado sceneries with professionalism and humbleness, NIGHT PASSAGE was his first movie and he dedicated most of his career to television afterwards. No, it's entirely due to the script's weakness. However, there were a few good ideas, not exploited, in it, like the rivalry between the two brothers or the metaphor of the tunnel in the mountain, excavated by miners. Too bad.

A DVD zone could have been much better.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Stewart at his personal best........2007-04-20

You cannot ignore James Stewart, John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, as being the three unbeatable icons of the American Western.

Night Passage is one of these vehicles. Short and to the point. Clear outlined characters and brilliant dialogues, make this a truly classic Western.

Its transfer is simply impeccable with sharp images and although the sound is a plain two-channel Mono, it is so clear that it almost seems to be in Stereo.

I cannot add much more to this presentation, except that such movies are the true gems of Hollywood at its best.

These were still the days when good acting, a bit of simple action (or not so simple, when filmed) and a good and solid storyline, were enough to produce an effective and successful product.

All this finally brought to full glory through the technology that DVDs have to offer nowadays, make this and other similar movie a sure buying experience.

    Highly recommended.

    2 out of 5 stars Pretty silly 50's western.......2007-03-16

You can see why Anthony Mann - originally signed to direct - walked out on this film. The script is pretty silly and the characters uncompelling. Perhaps this film would be better described as a musical as Jimmy Stewart finds every excuse to sing while playing his accordion - yes really! A footnote in western film history.

3 out of 5 stars The movie lacks the severe sadism that Mann would have injected it..........2006-11-08

The character Stewart portrays in "Night Passage" is the kind Mann intensely dislikes... A railroad worker entrusted with a payroll finds that the bandits, trying to rob it, are led by his own brother, so he assumes the blame for it himself...

With a soft cast including Brandon de Wilde and Herbert Anderson, Stewart felt himself very much in command... Maybe because he had enough of getting thrown under horses hooves, being shot in the hand, and dragged through fire... So he allowed himself to play the accordion, and to sing two Dimitri Tiomkin-Ned Washington songs: "Follow the River," and "You Can't Get Far Without a Railroad."

Dan Duryea gets the role of a railroad raider whose gang includes Stewart's wayward brother Audie Murphy... Gentle Brandon de Wilde is a teenager in whom Stewart takes a filial interest, and there is a climactic shoot-out with Duryea and his force of men...

The differences between Mann's Western concepts and Stewart's are on dramatic display in the film... The screenplay is written much more to Stewart's style, revealing a more kind humane quality... While Neilson is no action director, he does moderately well, providing standard excitement with the gunfights and chase scenes... But the movie lacks the severe sadism that Mann would have injected it...

Night Passage was the movie that ended the partnership of actor James Stewart and director Anthony Mann. Their classic Westerns, such as Winchester '73, The Man From Laramie, and of course, The Naked Spur, were all classic Westerns with gritty, edgy performances by Stewart.

But Stewart and Mann parted ways on this script involving a disgraced railroad detective who tries to redeem himself by capturing a group of train robbers. Maybe it was the fact that Stewart would sing and play the accordion in the film. Maybe it was the fact that Dan Duryea's character was suspiciously like his role in Winchester '73.

At any rate, this film is still a treat and an delight. Stewart plays a character very much like his Mann films, and Audie Murphy gives one of his better performances as the Utica Kid, one of Duryea's gang member, and someone who shares a secret with Stewart. And Duryea plays his part with gusto.

Western fans of the Mann/Stewart films should enjoy this film, regardless of the similarities, or even the differences between those films and Night Passage.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars stupid.......2007-01-04

this movie was SOOO stupid! i couldn't even get through all of it because it was that dumb! but i DID watch most of it so you can't say, "oh, you don't know what its like cos you didn't watch it all." so what?! i had had enough! it was supposed to be a horror movie but it wasn't terrifying at all. most of the blood and stuff looked really fake and during many parts i asked myself, "is this horror or comedy??" but maybe you will like it. i don't know. maybe, 1)i'm not one for vampire films, or maybe 2)this really IS a stupid movie. i would have to say the answer is probably 2. but this is only my opinion. and i think this movie is pretty cheesy.

    3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT THAT BAD...REALLY.......2005-01-19

Come now...How can you not like a horror movie which features the talents of Karen Black, Ami Dolenz, Peter DeLuise, and Garret Morris? Well I suppose you can hate it but I actually thought it wasn't that bad and had one very genuinely creepy scene.

Set in a small town called Allburg, two girls Lucy (Dolenz) and Cindy (Maya McLaughlin) visit an old abandoned church. A creepy looking old gothic cathedral. The legend goes that you can actuall swim in an old crypt beneath the church so the girls give it a try. Well, Cindy loses her crucifix as it floats to the bottom of the crypt and awakens a vampire from his sleep and he immediately kills her while Lucy escapes.

Meanwhile a former priest (DeLuise) has heard the legends of the vampires and comes to Allburg to invesigate and runs into Lucy as she is escaping from the vampire. The pair along with the town drunk, (Garret Morris) have to find a way from stopping the vampire from spreading is bite as already dozens of townspeople have been turned into vampires themselves. One of those, played by Karen Black, is imprisoned in the house of another priest who she constantly torments with her taunts and screams.

The acting is nothig to write home about. Black and Morris are both way over the top, but in kind of a fun and b-movie way. The scene in the old gothic church was quite creepy although why ANYONE would ever want to go swim in a mold invested crypt is beyone me. For a change the vampire isn't some sauve, GQ pretty boy but a rather decrepit, pasty faced, demonic looking thing.

Children of the night was no classic but you could do much worse.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesomely Bad!.......2004-09-30

A vapire flick that is worth seeing more than once about a small town being overrun by vampires and the humans who are left standing are in the fight of their lives. But in the end good triumphs over evil and the story ends yet doesn't.

    4 out of 5 stars BAD DVD.......2004-09-10

I LOVE this film. I am a karen Black Fanatic and had to have it even though the dvd is grainy looking and presented in "fullscreen" ONLY! The story and film itself is creepy and a good dose of old school vampire horror film making but the transfer here is ULTRA sloppy and just plain sad!

Too bad Anchor Bay or Blue Underground didnt get a hold of this good vampire flick! I heap this in the pile with other Great Vamp films like "Lost Boys" and "Near Dark" it has dark humor and good old fashioned creepiness!

    I give the film a 4 star rating, the dvd a 2
