3 out of 5 stars Executioners need protection.......2007-02-09

Average movie with OK acting, and many questions that needed to be answered to make this a classic!

I bought this movie because some of the reviews said that it was very good, but they did not tell the true story. At first the son was made to look like a little girl, and immediately study his mother's technique. The movie never really answered why the father made that decision, which was a key to the movie. I did like the interaction between the father and son, because that showed how the son wanted to emulate and aspire to follow in his father's footsteps as a warrior. I thought some of the interaction between the father and wife was a little unnecessary, and had nothing to do with the movie. The romance portion was short-lived, because that was it!!

Many of these movies devalue women once they have kids. They may have been a good warrior, but once the kids come then she becomes nothing but a cook, laundry maiden, and house servant. To me that is sad, because the plot would have worked even more by showing the mother as a great fighter who helped her husband's kung fu by continually fighting him with a different technique to help him grow stronger. Instead she just stood by and kept telling the husband that "you are not ready to fight Pai-Ma, you must study more!" If your husband was going to fight somebody who killed your father or brother would you send him out unprepared? NO WAY !!!

Other than these problems, the movie developed very slowly, but was not a total waste, because the scenes with Pai-Ma were all pretty good. This is not a must have, but its definitely worth watching if you are a fan of Pai Ma.

5 out of 5 stars Great Old School Actioner.......2006-06-14

For those waiting decades (literally) to get a remastered and widescreen version of this film and with the original English dubs, this is so far the one to get. One important thing though, is the Celestial Pictures remastered version, even though only with subtitles, the picture and audio quality is much better. You will notice the difference if you have both versions and watch them side by side. Another thing is the Chinese dub at least at one point came on. This was the scene when Hung See Kuan fights Pai Mei for the first time and grabs his groin. Pai Mei was supposed to say "Can't find it?" Instead it was spoken in Chinese. Another noticable thing is since it seems Red Sun was mixing the English dub when convenient, the syncing would be noticable off. For instance, in the last fight with Hung Wen Ding, the sound effects are a little late after the actual movements have occurred. This syncing problem also occurs in the Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu Red Sun release.

5 out of 5 stars there is a reason you pay a couple dollars more for the red sun versions over groundzero.......2006-04-25

actually reasons, and big ones at that. It's not panned and scanned, it is presented in 16:9 format. Which I actually prefer over letterbox, if I had a big screen, I would probably take the letterbox, but this is to peoples advantage if you have around a 25 inch tv like me. Also another big plus is that unlike groundzero, you will be getting beautiful remastering job with no scratches, and I guarantee that. Now the sound is really the inly thing that they could have improved on. It only has 2-channel english language but the sound quality is still very good and won't fluxuate throughout the movie. The sound does change slightly but only because during the action, they just use original language track, but whenever they shift to speech, they have the john wayne sound-a-like AND COMPANY WHO DO ALL THE OLD SCHOOL AND NEW SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER. So get ready for the same old voices, but again the sound shifts but is barely noticeable, I'm just a nitpicker. So overall it's worth the 3-5 dollars more.

Now the movie itself is absolutely wonderful. It has the great Chen Kuan Tai playing one of the last disciples after their shaolin temple was burned down. The movie starts with an introduction of how Pai Mei became a traitor and decided to help the ching's. It show's the head abbot of shaolin in a duel with pai mei and show his special kung fu internal style. Externally is shown just as well. I honestly can't think of a greater actor to play the traitor of the ming's. So in the next fight we get the greatest cameo of gordon liu's career. I had actually forgotten that this guy is a great actor until watching this and shaolin challenges ninja again. Now the action is made up of about 5 scenes. One after the other they get better and better but none surpassed the first 2 of the movie, the rest were just better because of the character development and the finale could not have been much better. Sure it could be bette in terms of speeds and superamn jumps but this is a hell of a lot more complex than your average kung fu tale. Now if I was only rating the fu it would only get like a 3.5, compared to say hitman in the hand of buddha would get a 3.5 or 4 btu is still only a 3 star movie. So after chen Kuan Tai escapes(thanks to gordon) he goes in hidnign and travels with the peking opera on the junks. Now I will certainly not leave out li-li-li, the hottest woman in cinema history. She meets kuan tai and marries him and they have a son who is played by wong yue. I am not familiar and didn't like him al that much, but he more than fit the bill for his fighting. So when the junks are ordered to be burned, chen and lily go in hiding and he studies for YEARS in the tiger claw style to try and beat pai mei, and he constanty refuses to implement her crane style. Even after he gets defeated by Pai Mei and is sent home a miserable loser he won't try her kung fu. But I guarantee you will see an ending that is sweet and overall great execution throughout the entire movie that will leave you with a smile on your face(especially if yu are a fan of li-li-li).

Also I didn't think that it deserved 5 stars I was stuck on a 4-4.5, but then the end came around.

Also sidenote from up at the top, this is uncut just like all red sun releases, so don't expect to see a scene cut-off and then reappear with lines on the screen and distortion because somebody finally decided to press the play button in a non-action scene.

3 out of 5 stars Good Film....but dont buy Red Sun version.......2007-06-20

Red Sun only sells bootleg dvds that are of very poor quality. I made the mistake of buying the Red Sun version, and it is horrible. It is not digitally remastered, the audio would go out in several places, and it would freeze and skip...and would often freeze up my dvd player in the process. The reviewer "morgoth" works for Red Sun and just spams reviews saying how great Red Sun is. Do yourself a favor and dont buy this dvd...you can easily find a real version elsewhere. Do other people a favor and spread the word about Red Sun...and vote NOT HELPFUL on all morgoth's reviews.

This is a great film, and I encourage you to buy a non-bootleg copy.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC DISCOVERED!!!.......2007-03-15

I have been a fan and collector of old skool kung fu flix since I was a kid. I thought I had seen all the good ones untill I discovered this gem. The fight coreoraphy is terrific, and the definate high point of the film is Lo Lehi's preformance as "Pai Mei". As a matter of personal preferance, I prefer a more serious and bloody story. This flix was a bit light hearted in tone for me, but I laughed out loud when Gordon Liu attacks Lo Lehi while he's relaxing in the bathtub. Overall this film is an old skool classic. Worth every penny of what you pay for it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best period..........2007-03-12

If you have not seen this yet, it is an absolute must for any fan of the genre. White Lotus priest Pei Mei is at his best, and Gordon Liu does not disappoint in his role... I also recommend Executioner from Shaolin which is the prequal to this awesome film...

1 out of 5 stars Great film, horrid DVD........2007-02-06

If you're looking for bootleg DVDs with bootleg "quality," here you go. Red Sun or whatever their name is, is a bootleg company that steals the image quality from Hong Kong DVDs and sells it as their own. They then put out crappy bootlegs like this here and have their stooges post how great they are so you buy their releases. The dvds are poor, have audio and image issues, and fall apart in a year or so. If that sounds "Great," "superior," etc. please feel free to buy this release. If not, get the actual releases from Hong Kong for cheaper prices and see something great.

4 out of 5 stars WHIE LOTUS PREIST steals the show!!!.......2007-02-01

Watch this movie for THE WHITE LOTUS PRIEST PAI MEI. The White Lotus Preist is one of the coolest characters you'll ever see in any kung fu movie , period. Although I enjoyed this kung fu movie, I've seen Gordon Liu in better roles. The White Lotus Preist fights Gordon Liu several times and each time spares G.L.'s life. I was very angry, because at the end when Gordon Liu finally is able to beat the White Lotus Preist he kills him and doesn't spare his life.

5 out of 5 stars Red Sun is good, but waiting for Image Entertainment.......2007-03-20

To anybody who never saw a "real" kung fu movie or thinks it's chop-socky nonsense, then watch this awesome movie. It will change your whole attitude around. Like most of the reviewers, I caught this movie as a kid on "Drive In Movie" Saturday afternoon in the early 80s. Actually, "Chinatown Kid" (another classic starring the Venoms & the late Fu Sheng) was my first official intro to the incredible Shaw Brothers/Chang Cheh realm. "Five Venoms", along with "The Kid With the Golden Arm" (same people behind that), "Master Killer" (directed by Liu Chia-liang, starring his half-brother, Gordon Liu) & "The Prodigal Son" (Samo Hung wing chun classic), is simply one of the best.

First, the film itself~everyone seems to know the story, dying sifu (Tu Lung a.k.a. Dick Wei) of the Poison Clan sends his last student Yang Tieh (the late Chiang Sheng) to seek out his other five students. Ally himself with one virtuous venom and kill the ones who are villainous. The five venoms are #1 Centipede; Tang San-kwei (Lu Feng), #2 Snake; Hung Wen-tung (Wei Pai, who I never considered to be a real venom. He was only in four of their films and wasn't a real martial artist like the rest of them), #3 Scorpion; Ma Tang (Sun Chien), #4 Lizard; Ho Yung-hsin (Philip Kuo Chui) & #5 Toad; Li Ho (Golden Arm himself Lo Mang).

Despite not having as many fights as some of the other Venom classics, the story is so engrossing it doesn't matter. However, the fights that do occur deliver the goods. Kudos to Robert Tai & Liang Ting for their choreography, especially Toad versus Centipede and that incredible end fight. Even Wei Pai looks good, although he's totally outclassed by Kuo & Chiang. Great performances and great music. I know it's stock music but Chen Yung-yu really picked out some of the best tracks.

A little trivia info, the Snake venom was originally supposed to be played by a woman and #1 & #2 were husband and wife. Director Chang Cheh (reportedly a chauvinist) scrapped the idea because he didn't want a woman having a lead role in his movie. Next, the DVD transfer~the Red Sun version is the best one right now, they must have borrowed their version from Celestial. It's widescreen, crisp picture, decent audio and it's uncut (you see the Scorpion sort of lose his mind right before he dies). Unfortunately, it's dubbed but at least it's those Australian people doing the English voices. Good news, Celestial Pictures did a slamming job on their version; bad news, it's region 3. However, Image Entertainment has been re-releasing awesome prints of Shaw Brother classics on region 1. Check out my review for "Have Sword Will Travel."

5 out of 5 stars Five Deadly Venoms get 5 Stars.......2007-02-09

INSTANT CLASSIC!! You must have this movie if you are a fan of Kung-fu movies!! The various characters and styles were outrageous, but well-represented. The Red-Sun version sound was adequate, but my version got stuck when #4 quits the police department. I think this is a hit or miss.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS EDITION!! RED SUN VERSION.......2006-11-10

Fully restored and anamorphic widescreen. Unlike the crappy bootleg copies others sell on Amazon, the picture looks great. The only negative I can see is that it doesn't have the original Chinese language track with English subtitles, but that doesn't really matter to me because I like the English Language track better. Old-School King-Fu movies, especially Shaw brothers are better enjoyed that way I feel, reminds me of my youth. Buy this edition for the best quality of this classic film.

5 out of 5 stars Poison Clan Rocks The World.......2006-06-20

Everyone rejoice...the remastered widescreen English dubbed version of this famous film is now available. And yes the famous lines spoken by the original voice-over actors are intact. Now you can hear "poison clan rocks the world" and "the iron maiden" once again and enjoy the viewing the fabulous restoration at the same time. There aren't any significant special features but heck at least we have a version that's worth showing your friends.

To bad you can only give 5 stars. This is an awesome Movie. Some of the scenes are excellent. Some sad parts and some good parts. Some shocking parts. I mean like some really wow parts. One guy is fighting ninjas under ground and gets stabbed from underneath. I mean like wow he steps on his own intestine! You have got to get this movie. If you don't have it GET IT! An amazing Movie. One of the best Shaw releases.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Martial Art Movie.......2006-06-13

This is an awesome movie. The fight scences are some of the best aever made, the costumes are great, and the use of weapons are really good. The basis of the movie is that the school of good guys (who wear white) has a tournement against the bad school (wears back) for control of the martial arts world. But when the bad guys lose, their hired killer throws the master of the good school his ring (which is poisonous) and tells him when he sees another ring like that that it will be his friend/master challenging him. So the master has his school practice and set up a defense system around their school. A few months down the line, they get a challenge from the killer's friend (the ninja school) to go against their 5 elements. So not knowing what they are up against, the good master sends most of his best warriors to see what the 5 elements are. And that's when all the action starts. Each element uses a unique style of fighting that will leave you awed. This movie is a great tale of revenge and regret. I think you'll really like it.

Product Description

The year was BC221 when Qin Shi Huang - the first emperor of China started to build a royal tomb for himself despite his infatuation with immortality. Through the prodigious endeavours of more than 700,000 forced labourers, the mausoleum was completed 37 years later. Legend has it that, to ensure utmost secrecy, all those who worked on the project were buried alive with the dead emperor. There were no survivors. Over the next two thousand years, historians, tomb-raiders, and happy-go-lucky adventurers alike have been homing on the royal treasure buried within, However, no one has ever succeeded in locating the entrance to the mausoleum. Thus, the bulk of the First Emperor's treasure, including his much-fabled elixir of youth, remained intact. Intrepid archeologist Jack (starring Jackie Chan) and ambitious scientist William (starring Tony Leung Ka-fai) set out on an adventure that would lead them to the greatest discovery in Chinese history. Their journey starts at Desar, India, where they stumble upon an ancient sword from the Qin dynasty and a magical gemstone that appears to be able to defy the force of gravity. The booty not only leads them to the mythical mausoleum, but it also connects Jack to his dark past life. Through strange and provocative dreams, Jack sees himself reincarnated as Meng Yi, a general who fell for the First Emperor¡¦s beautiful consort Ok Soo (starring Kim Hee-seon) some 2000 years ago. As Meng Yi commands his troops in an increasingly desperate war against rebels, he also has to battle his own inner desires in choosing between eternity love and loyalty, Returning to the present day , the final secret of the First Emperor is about to be revealed. The two adventurers successfully enter the Heavenly Palace, a fortress loaded with death traps and unspeakable evils, as Jack comes face-to-face with his past. Or is it really?

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect by any means, but worth watching .......2007-02-21

As a Jackie Chan fan, the Myth didn't get me too excited when i first heard about it, but then again, it's not like I ever had hope of getting a copy in Canada anyways. But years later, and my interest in Jackie Chan renewed, I aquired a copy and finally got to see what this movie was all about.
In a nutshell, I enjoyed the movie and it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth. It's a movie unlike any he's ever done before, and the production quality is really fantastic (at least compared to other Hong Kong movies of the past). The movie is really two movies intertwined. One of the present (where Jackie plays an "Armour Of God" type character and one of the past where he plays a general in an army.
What I liked about this movie:
I liked how they dubbed Jackies General character over with another actor to further bring the idea that they are two different people. The voice used for him is perfect in every way and I just love the way he speaks. If this voice was used to speak english it would sound really awkward and unatural. With Cantonese, it's absolutly stunning.
The movie also has some really classic and unique Jackie style fight scenes with his trademark comedy thrown in. It's not really that dark of a movie at all, it just seems like it could have used more development with a bunch of characters. I guess that even though it's a pretty decent length movie, the two stories have to share time with each other.
There is alot of wirework in this movie in a kind of Crouching tiger fashion, but I think it suits the type of movie it is.

At any rate I recommend this to any Jackie Chan fan to see at least once in their life.

3 out of 5 stars Filo Dough Mmmmm.......2006-09-04

This film is like a small, flaky, pastry. It is nice and enjoyable, but doesn't leave you entirely satisfied if you were looking for more than light fare.

1 out of 5 stars Wouldn't Play.......2006-06-13

It wouldn't even play on my DVD player. So basically it was a total waste of my money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest epic love story of all time!.......2006-02-28

This is one of the greatest epic love story of all time!

The immersion factor of the love story is wonderful, and the 'feeling' of love is pretty darn real, someone unique not found in most love stories.

Feel free to email me @ bochen02@gmail.com if anyone has more information on the rational behind the epic love story / plot in MYTH. It'd like to hear an enlightened perspective on why the movie ended the way it did. Jackie Chan's own website doesn't go into the philosophical aspects of the love epic and I find that a little disappointing, since I would have to either figure it out on my own, or seek other people's opinions.

In particular, even if the Jack was a reincarnated version of General Meng Yi, why would Princess/Concubine Ok-soo not follow him out of the collapsing cave? I could understand her reasoning that its not the `actual' person General Meng Yi, but it IS his soul, so in essence it's still Meng Yi, because there is no other in the universe that is or could ever be more like the original Meng Yi. And since Ok-soo somehow has the dedication and conviction to persevere for all eternity waiting for him, it would seem silly that she would have found him (his soul, and thus the `essence' of Meng Yi) at long last and refuse to go with him. So she kept her promise until the end, waiting for the Meng Yi she now knows will never come, and gets here original wish of death 2000 years later being crushed by falling rocks inside a massive cave.

Or maybe Meng Yi did keep his promise. For the short period of time that Meng Yi spends with Ok-soo alone in the cave, perhaps Meng Yi used Jack's physical body in order to finally be with Ok-soo again? Maybe the whole reason Jack gets all these weird dreams was because Meng Yi had to keep his promise to Ok-soo, and he had chosen Jack to be the medium to use his body to get to Ok-soo. So in that case Jack is not the Meng Yi reincarnated at all, but rather the spirit of Meng Yi has temporality usurped Jacks body so that two could be together for a short while. So they both kept their promise. Ok-soo waited for Meng Yi for 2000 years. (Personally I applaud both Ok-soo and that soldier protecting her inside to cave for not screwing around with each other, cause 2000 years inside a damn cave with nothing to do can get quite frustrating, but I guess after about the first 200 years they got used to it) Meng Yi's general kept his promise. And Meng Yi himself kept his promise too, he did come back, he just didn't specify for how long.

They (Ming Yi and Ok-soo) lived a lifetime in the few moments they had together before Meng Yi's spirit disintegrated back into the death of which he came from, and Ok-soo and the Qin era soldier died in the caves. In the end this is what would have happened had Ming Yi not have been killed on the battlefield that fateful day 2000 years ago. He and Ok-soo would have been together, be happy and in love, and eventually they would have both died, except it turned out to be prolonged for two millenniums and the happily ever after stage was cut short. But they got what they wanted. So good story.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed but Commendable Effort from Jackie and Company.......2006-02-01

I must admit that I'm not a Jackie Chan fan, so I didn't like this movie at first, but quite to my surprise it did grow on me after repeated viewings.

This movie is a rather incongruous mixture of a silly Jackie Chan action movie and a serious ancient Chinese epic. I suppose the part that grew on me is the latter. I've always been fascinated by the legends and myths surrounding the as yet undiscovered tomb of the First Emperor Qin of China, and this movie's interpretation of it is spectacular indeed (if you can overlook the silly bogus "science" the movie invoked in trying to explain everything, some things are best left unexplained...) But to appreciate it, I suppose one has to know a bit about the actual legend. e.g. it was recorded by an ancient Chinese historian who lived about 100 years after Qin that 700000 workers labored for 20 years to build the emperor's tomb, and that it was so huge that it resembled an "artificial universe". In the high ceiling were embedded thousands of glittering gems mimicking the constellations in heaven, while on the floor there were rivers of mercury recreating the major rivers in China in miniature. While the movie took liberties with anti-gravity and other silly things, its depiction of the emperor's tomb is based on historical records. My jaw dropped when I first saw it :)

As for the rest of the movie, apart of the historical epic part, it's pretty standard Jackie Chan fare: silly story with silly fights and silly gags, and some good-looking babes as eye-candy: including the Chinese debut of Korean beauty Kim Hee-Seon and Bollywood sweetheart Mallika Sherawat. Chan's acting is sub-par as usual, especially in the romantic scenes with Kim, which suffered from lack of chemistry and credibility (though it's still better than the cringe-inducing "romantic" scenes in Star Wars Eps. 2 and 3).

By jarring contrast, the ancient Chinese epic portion of this movie is very serious, so much so that they apparently decided to artificially squeeze Jackie Chan's face (to make him look more serious? more handsome???) whenever he appeared as the Qin general Meng-Yi in the DVD. And unlike most other Jackie Chan movies, this part of the movie is surprisingly violent and bloody.

As I watched this movie, I kept thinking that this would have been a much better movie if it had been directed by Zhang Yi-Mou and re-written by someone else, and if Jackie Chan's not in it...

For me, the highlight of this movie is the spectacular and imaginative depiction of Emperor Qin's tomb, and for that alone I'm willing to overlook the other weaknesses in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Old Skool Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-13

This flick definately reflects Gordon Liu in a positive light since "The Master Killer". I thought his flick was a great old school story,,,very entertaining. This flick was directed by the great Leung Kar Yan, one of his best production,,no question. Definately a must see,,really great movie!!

5 out of 5 stars a MUST HAVE for a fan of kung fu films.......2006-06-06

If you know kung fu films then you must know Gordon Liu, and this is one of my favorite movies of his. Gordon Liu is an awesome martial artist. In this film he demonstrate many martial arts techniques such a drunken boxing and other kung fu styles. In this movie Gordon Liu is forced to marry a Japanese woman who is skilled and proud of her Japenese fighting skills and customs. This couple eventually quarrells over whos style is better. The Japenese wife's masters come from Japan to teach Gordon Liu a lesson. A beautiful display of spear, sword, staff, Judo, karete, ninjitsu, and other fighting styles are displayed. The movie is english dubbed, and the option of clear subtitles is available. The movie is digitally restored so it is fairly clear when compared to other old school kung fu films. Simply, buy this movie if you enjoy good kung fu movies, a must have for all fans!!

I feel like every review starts out the same for me, but here I go.

If you have not heard of red sun and do not have an all-region dvd player, then red sun is the best company going for classic kung fu. If you look up red sun under the amazon search engine, you will see I have plenty of reviews for this distribitor, that's because I have bought most of these and have managed to find some of the best movies in the history of cinema. And the LETTERBOXED widesceening job is so perfect I would be ahppy if this was the only dvd I had, ever.

First off, you will be sure that this is not a shaw's movie right away by the music. It sounds like authentic japanese, and overall provides an awesome score. It is really nice to get away from that stock music. And with origianl language, this goes both ways. The japanese are well worth hearing their voices, and there are a lot of japanese.

The movie has an odd start, no fancy MA display for the credits. it goes right to the story. Gordon Liu's family have set up a marriage for him long ago. But he doesn't really like this. So his friend(who you will certainly recogzine if you have seen any fu) comes in and tells him that the japanese girl has arrived. He goes on to describe her top and her bottom. Gordon gets all excited and runs out to meet her. But she comes in and lives in gordon's family's house and has absolutely no respect. Now gordon doesn't handle this the best way and since he is obviouusly better at the MA's, he beats her at everything. So this leads her to keep on breaking things and starting fights with him, to the point that she just completely leaves and goes home to japan. But when gordon sends a letter saying how far superior chinese is to japanese martial arts, her masters get pretty mad.

So all the japanese masters come over to challenge gordon. He sees his wife and rejoices but then sees like 8 dudes and one of them is like a giant. Now the second half of this thing begins. I still can't decide if I like the first or second half better. It is truly one of the best in the genre first half, but then the second half rivals any fu movie ever and manages to top most of them. The woman playing gordon's wife plays it perfectly. The first battle is superb, japanese against chinese sword, and more importantly, 2 techniques against eachother. The second the director comes up with an excuse to show that he is also a true drunken master, not just the yuen's and jackie. He plays the same drunk as most, and gordon has to learn his technique. This happens in too short amount of time, but works for the movie. And norman chu as another one of gordon's friend is great. No martial arts from him though. The weapons scenes are wonderful as they always match up chi and jap weapons. There is a spear scene, a 3 section staff against a 2 section and a sword, sai's against knives, and a match against a monster of a man, which I still think gordon cheated no matter what way they explain it. And the final one is prbably the best, true ninja scene(movie wise at least). So simon yuen has a good appearence hear as gordon's teacher and he keeps figuring out ways to beat all the japanese master that have come to challenge him.

But the main drawing point this movie is the real japanese actors. I am sure they are not real actors, but they worked just fine. The guy with the sai's may have no been japanese. And the master of all these master doesn's appear japanese but he doesn't fight, so that's cool. And Kuratu gets the well deserving lead role among them.

SO THIS RED SUN VERSION HAS 2 LANGUAGE TRACKS!!!!!! LETTERBOXED, CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!! AND 5.1 BOOMING SOUND.

Now, what more could you ask for.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-27

Great movie, the story is a bit exagerated in comparison to Sosai Oyama's life, but it has a lot of true aspects of his life. Long live Kyokushin!

4 out of 5 stars "Toughest man in the World.."-New York Times, 1961.......2007-05-03

"Fighter In the Wind" (Paramui Paito)is the story of Choi Bae-dul, a real-life legendary martial arts figure who, during his peak, defeated hundreds of martial arts experts in Japan and around the world. Or more precisely, based on the comic based on the martial artist's life. Choi Bae-dul is also the founder of Kyo kushin karate, millions of students still practice today.

Much of the film takes place during World War II and is set in Japan. The first half of the film follows the adventures of a young Choi Bae-dul (Yang Dong-Geun), whose desire to become a pilot takes a side-winding nose dive when death and humiliation destroy his dreams. After his humiliation at a marketplace, he is tagged as the "pant-wetter". After a run-in with the Yakuza, greatly influenced by the tales of the samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, he embarks on a training regiment in the mountains to develop a unique form of Karate.
Choi Bae-dul, now in top form, travels all around the country, by foot, to challenge and defeat opponents of different styles and origins. Even his worn out, white Karate Gi looks identical to the one Ryu wears in the "Streetfighter" video game. This cartoon-like transition is strange, but doesn't hurt or strengthen the film in any way.

Fighter in the Wind shows the inherent racism towards Koreans living in Japan, especially towards one person who proves himself the superior martial artist to many Japanese masters. The Japanese hated that Choi was being compared to the great swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. What is most interesting (at least to me) is how those Japanese that don't know Choi show nothing but contempt towards him, while those that get to know him, end up with a certain respect, and almost adoration for him.

Beautiful Aya Hirayama plays Choi's(Yang Dong-geun)love interest. He is forced to leave her when his conscience won't allow him to stay with her.

The thing I loved about this film is that no wires, CGI was used in its fight choreography. It is well-staged, realistic and a bit brutal, although not as hard-hitting as Ong-bak or TOM YUM GOONG. The music/soundtrack also fits the film and makes it feel epic-like.

PICTURE: ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN. The Korean region-3 release is fantastic. The transfer is very clean, I didn't notice any enhancements or video noise. Colors are radiant and blacks are very detailed.
AUDIO/SUBTITLES: Korean 5.1 DD and DTS-ES. The DTS track is loud! Yopu feel the impact of the hits in your living room. The english subs are very well-translated.
I'm not sure what is being sold in amazon, I have the Korean 2-disc region 3 release with a ton of extras.

I really enjoyed this film. Of course, no one can expect an entertaining, accurate film about the life of man in 2 hours. FIGHTER IN THE WIND makes a very decent attempt though.
    RECOMMENDED!!

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!.......2006-12-24

4 out of 5 stars An epic tale of journey and strength.......2006-09-01

This was unlike every martial arts movie I've seen. It was dramatic, plot-driven, and deep. It's a movie you want to see if you are a martial arts enthusiast, martial arts lover, or a lover of a good story. This is a very underrated movie. I suggest all moviegoers get this for their libraries.

Hey kung fu fans like myself! I know whatever i say you might still want to see this movie, but trust me when you do see it ha ha you will be bored! This is another movie that recieved tons of hype for who knows what reason? I gave it three stars for having a story you can follow. As far as the fight scenes go they are not spectacular. I know its an oldie but still . Go see the magnificant butcher or fearless heyena. bye

I really enjoyed this flick,,truly one of Gordon Liu best performance,,,there is no question,,not only is this guy an amazing kung fu performer, but he can truly act. This flick is truly a gem,,a ,must have classic. Old school kung fu very transparent from the start to finish!! Definatly a must have for the collection,,,,you will not be dissapointed!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Shaw Brothers movies ever.......2006-05-25

Now this is one of the best red sun releases there are. It is presented in a letterboxed format. And the film print has been restored 100%. It is so beautiful. I am telling you, when you buy red sun release, MAKE SURE IT SAYS REMASTERED ON THE BOX. If it doesn't say it, it is non remastered, has imbedded subs, is full screened, etc. Every red sun release has been exceptable to me(except 1), but the remastered ones are seriously of the top 5 percentile fo my HUGE dvd collection. And if you are wonderign if it is good, look it up on here, most likely I have reviewed it and the red sun version they are showign too.

Now this movie is truly one of the best shaw productions ever. Great opening shaw white backround battle sequence. Wong Yue(not jimmy wang yu) and gordon liu are both in a brothel and keep both of the guys keep giving all the girls a ton of money in hopes to be with them all night. When Wong yue realizes that Gordon is the playboy who is competing with him he tries to fight him. What we find out is that gordon is a Prince. So since gordon can't(won't) fight, wong yue beats him up anyway. Dirty Ho. I saw the title of this movie, and said WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it is surprisingly a fitting title. So wong yue gets into a little too much trouble(not like he hadn't caused any before), and gordon decides to take him on. He forces him to be his disciple and does this by making Dirty Ho think he is poisoned. So just before this we see that the Gordon Liu's brother has plans to kill him so that he can become emperor. He doesn't want it to be known so he sends assasins. First up is Johhny Wang(lung lung wei) who invites him to a wine tasting event. This fight is one of the most brilliant I have ever seen put to the jade screen. Hsiou Ho, who has played little monkey in "Mad Monkey Kung Fu" and Fong Sai Yuk in "Disciples of master Killer" is Johhny Wang's sidekick(waiter) and his acrobatics are on full display. Watching Gordon have to hide his skills whenever Dirty Ho is around is SUCH a pleasure. Finally at the midway point we get a twist. One that I wasn't expecting and didn't think it was going to work. But it turned out to be a great final fight and the arrow use was pretty unique I thought for a movie like this. They have these Mongolian Archers in the back row who freaking jump over the front row archers already shooting arrows in mid air RIGHT after the front row archers shoot. It is just some more stunning choreography by Master Lau Kar Leung. Also unique to this is a group of very wierd vilians. A group comes over to fight wing yue and gordon and they are all just a bit on the wierd side. The first one is a guy who you punch all you can and he just takes it. The next guy is the biter, you can guess what he does. The next guy is bitter face and has a sad face and he bi*** slaps you until your face is cringed up like his. I won't tell you the rest but like I said, this classic has some VERY unique touches. It ends up being a weird scene but the only questionable part of the movie, Not everyday that you find a good kung fu MOVIE. Just like what he did in Shaolin mantis and Shaolin Challenges Ninja, Master Lau has proven to be the best kung fu director ever.

So the picture quality is absolutely perfecto. And the 2-channel classic dub job is very good too. Trailers include celestial's releases of Five Venoms, Crippled Avengers, and Mad Monkey Kung Fu. By the way, all these movies have been released by red sun. Just make sure it says remastered, cause if it does, then they DO NOT lie like ground zero or crash cinema does.

Cherish this movie people, it is one for adults, the children, everyone.
