John Wayne, that pillar of machismo, was well aware that costar Rock Hudson was gay, yet he prized him as a boon companion, a fellow professional, and one hell of a bridge player. Each plays a Civil War commander who, after the ceasefire, leads a community of home folks into Mexico to make a fresh start. Hudson is a Southern gentleman; Wayne commanded the Yankee cavalry at Shiloh, where Hudson's brother died. Nevertheless, Rock, with his extended family, and Duke, with his troop of cowboys and 3,000 horses to sell to Emperor Maximilian, soon join forces to outgun banditos and beam paternally over the budding romance between their respective daughter and son (an adopted Indian played by footballer Roman Gabriel with Crystal Gayle hair). Lingering North-South animosities are celebrated in an obligatory communal fistfight in the Andrew V. McLaglen manner, and the showdown with both Maximilian's lancers and the rebel Juaristas is disconcertingly perfunctory. --Richard T. Jameson

OLDIES BUT GOODIES.......2007-06-27
Love westerns, & John Wayne's movies have always been entertaining. Films are good wet weather viewing, & acting has always been fairly consistent.
Three 60s Wayne Westerns Are a Treat!.......2006-03-16
By the 1960s, John Wayne's westerns had become as familiar as a well-worn beloved Stetson, and Wayne, himself, had settled into a patriarchal role that suited both his age and screen presence. This DVD collection offers the Duke in three of his most entertaining films of the period, and is well-worth owning!
"North to Alaska" (1960), Wayne's follow-up to "The Alamo", is a brawling, lusty saga of two Alaskan prospectors (Duke and Stewart Granger), and the reformed prostitute (Capucine), who complicates their lives. Wayne consciously tried to 'broaden' his westerns with this film, introducing more comedy and family-friendly action (culminating in 1963's classic, "McLintock!"), and, despite being too long, the film has a lot of charm. Worth noting is an excellent cast, including Ernie Kovacs (in one of his last film roles), as the smarmy villain, young Fabian, as Granger's over-sexed younger brother, and Mickey Shaughnessy, hilarious as the 'dim bulb' drunken prospector who becomes a key player in Kovacs' plan to steal the Wayne/Granger goldmine.
Entertaining light fare!
"The Commancheros" (1961), Wayne's next film after "North to Alaska", is even better (and the best of this trilogy), with the Duke, as a crusty Texas Ranger, sharing the screen with an excellent Stuart Whitman, portraying fugitive New Orleans gambler, Paul Regret. The final film directed by legendary Michael Curtiz (with unbilled help by Wayne, as the director was in poor health), the tale is a light-hearted adventure of Duke and Whitman gradually becoming friends, as Wayne attempts to thwart a gun-running scheme involving the notorious band of outlaws of the film's title. Very much a 'family' western (with Wayne's son, Patrick, daughter Aissa, and long-time friend Bruce Cabot, in key roles), the film offers glamorous Ina Balin as Regret's mysterious lover, Nehemiah Persoff as her father, the gregarious leader of the Commancheros, and, best of all, Lee Marvin, in a small but showy role as Tully Crow, a half-breed gunrunner (Marvin's chemistry with Wayne was so potent that John Ford would soon team them in two of his own productions, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", and "Donovan's Reef").
Great fun, and great Wayne!
The final entry, "The Undefeated" (1969), is the weakest of the trilogy, yet offers some very entertaining moments. Filmed after Wayne's bout with lung cancer, he looks far older and more haggard, but still carries a commanding presence, as an ex-Union officer driving a large herd of horses south, forced to team up with an unrepentent Confederate officer (mustached Rock Hudson, in his only film with the Duke), and his wagon train of refugees, hoping to rebuild their fortunes in Mexico. While many of Wayne's friends have roles (Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr., Bruce Cabot, and Pedro Armendariz Jr.), the novelty casting of football stars Roman Gabriel and Merlin Olsen in key roles received the most attention when the film was released (Olsen was surprisingly good, and went on to a successful career on television). Wayne and Hudson are a lot of fun in their scenes together, and the underlying plot (of the Mexican struggle to rid itself of French 'puppet' Emperor Maximilian) never interferes with the broader comic 'edge' of the film. While Wayne looks a bit strange in muttonchop sideburns, all in all, the movie is a last fond look at the Duke's '60s western 'persona'. The westerns of the last decade of his life would be, generally, far darker, and more brutal.
This is certainly a Wayne trilogy worth owning!

About John Wayne' s centenary !.......2007-05-31
In the late sixties, the Western Genre experienced a visible twist of fate, due several conjugated factors, the surrounding socio- political reality and the presence of four notable directors who lived outdoors with a personal approach about this genre: Sam Peckinpah, who literally inspired direct and indirectly to many others filmmakers. Beware of two fundamental samplers: When a director of the artistic punch of Artur Penn decided to make Little big man", Sergio Leone and his "Once upon a time in the West"and then Andrew McLaglen with "The undefeated" curiously Peckinpah was filming in the same year, that the classic cult movie: "The wild bunch", the intention was clearly obvious; The western had to come out from its inner reality; Indians against the good guys was literally exhausted and they had to search new sources of inspiration. You may realize other four emblematic Westerns that definitively were on the other side of the accustomed frontier: "The lives and times of judge Roy Bean" of John Huston, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid" and Richard Brooks' "Bite the bullet." Moreover, there is one point I want you to realize: Edward Dmytryk, (Warlock, 1959), Anthony Mann (The man in the west and The naked spur) Huston, Brooks, Sam Fuller (The broken arrow), were besides, remarkable directors in the Noir genre, which carves in relief the Western was still alive and enjoyed of good health.
And the occasion was propitious to take a look around the Mexican reality with Benito Juarez , joining an outlaw (John Wayne) who decides to sell guns and rifles, and his enemy Rock Hudson as a Confederate Officer, who by these destiny trickeries will join forces to carve in relief the patriotism was beyond any other ethic difference.
Action sequences are of first rate nature, and John Wayne in his absolute maturity as actor, was in the verge of making "True gift" an existential drama and Hudson combine their charisma to make a enjoyable movie with interesting plots and subplots to explore.
The Undefeated.......2007-01-10
I enjoyed this movie, a great group of actor's. A little taste of history, and beautiful country scenes through out. It takes you there.
The Undefeated.......2007-01-03
A true John Wayne classic. If you are fan of John Wayne and of Westerns in general, this is one movie you'll
enjoy immensely.
Undefeated.......2006-11-04
A Good movie;A John Wayne movie with a very nice cast, the usual Harry Carye Jr.Ben Johnson,John Agar,Paul Fix and many other great people. Especially from the time it is great to see Merlin Olsen and Roman Gabriel from the Football movie actor Era. The added plus is we have Rock Hudson in the movie. Not to forget the movies leading ladies Lee Meriweather,Marian McCargo. The women are very nice looking and they would be if they were in Rock Hudson's family. The time era of the film is after the American Civil War. John Wayne is your Northerner and Rock is from the South. The deep South. John Wayne is with his loyal men who are finanical ruined after the war and need to take home money to their families when they return. They band together to run a herd legally. The Rock is a family man who has lost everything even his country. The Southerns are lured to Mexico with false promises and high hopes. The Northerners are going to do business with Mexico also.John Wayne and the men end up helping the Southerns. Enemies but John Wayne and his men have honor and help the Southerners. Most importantly fellow Americans. The Civil War tore us apart and threw us together. There are great elements in the movie action, love, honor in people, human weaknesses, saddness, and some historical correctness. The movie is not anyone's best movie but it is not the worse either. Good entertainment with a good mix of plot and history. John Wayne and the Rock's only movie together. The movie shows everyone in such great shape and takes you back to great movie times.Watch and Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
awesome true to life movie..........2005-06-17
Undefeated, which stars John Leguizamo and which is also directed by Leguizamo, is the story about a boxer who comes out from the streets of Jackson Heights to make it big and then deal with those pros and cons.
Lex Vargas is a local boxer with dreams of making out of Jackson Heights. his best friend Loco (Clifton Collins Jr.) is also his manager, and intends on taking Vargas to the next level. Vargas first wins the P.A.L.S. boxing tournament then goes pro with his trainer Victor, who intends on bring up Vargas the right way. "you wanna walk or you wanna be the champ" is his motto. with Victor, Vargas starts to climb the charts, but then he falls in deep with Mac, whose connected with one of the big time boxing promotional teams.
Mac brings up Vargas fast and furious, Victor leaves cause he knows what's happening, Vargas falls for the BS and gets his title shot and wins. Following the fight, Loco starts seeing things differently, he starts seeing boxing as entertainment and not a sport and tries to get Vargas out before its to late, but he can't, so he walks on Vargas.
Vargas looses out with his friends because he rather go to business parties with Mac and company then hang out with his friends like he use to.
the whole tme, Vargas is also falling for Lizette Sanchez, a latino singer who hooks up with Mac to make it big, and she'll do anything to make it big. as she says, "we both started out naked, back there (jackson heights) that was waiting, but this is living."
the love story is complicated because Lizette is fooling around with Mac to make it big but is falling in love with Lex. at the same time, Lex is finally seeing what Loco had seen all along, that boxing was really entertainment. Matches were set up and rigged, fighters fought when they should never have been in the ring, and judges rigged fights. Lex also has a hard time trying to distinguish whether Lizette really likes him or whether she's just a pawn for Mac to keep Lex in line.
then comes the final big bout, the title belt match between Vargas the champ and the challanger, a young up and comer 23 year old whose 23-0 with 20 kos. Vargas has been told indirectly that he is to lose the fight in favor of a rematch which would lead to a third and final fight and a pocket of over $75M.
this is where the story makes full circle. Vargas hooks up with Loco again to be at his side and gets the nod that Lizette really does like him despite what has been going on. the ending is good, but some people may not like it. there is no winner, cause there is no final bout. Vargas is shown entering into the ring, Loco at his side, but not in his corner, and then the movie ends.
Undefeated is awesome. it's a very real life like movie that is fast, whitty, dramatic and awesome. the boxing scenes are good except for one fake punch, but other than that, this movie is beautiful.
Leguizamo did an awesome job. the more i watch the movie, the more i like it. also, the soundtrack is awesome and very catchy.
Undefeated... Eh........2004-10-21
The boxing movie. It has been done. And done, and done, and done.....
Which is why I, as a film fan and a boxing fan have been longing for the day when someone would take it in another direction, do something new, resist the temptation to throw in the obligatory training montage and give us something we haven't seen before. On some levels "Undefeated" succeeds. On other levels, it does not.
Leguizamo plays Lex Vargas, a Latino boxer with lightning fast hands, a lightning fast tongue (Yo I hit that fool so hard it hurt his whole family!) and a will to succeed at any cost. While Leguizamos portrayal of Vargas is convincing enough, the character himself is a bit too typical to the old boxing movie formula. Street kid, tough up-bringing, and so on. While he entertains, he does not explore any new territory.
This film also struggles with reality. Vargas' rise to fame is awfully brief. One day, he's fighting in the clubs, the next day he's a millionaire, and all this even before he's won a world title. As for the fight sequences.... All I can say is; Mouthfuls of fake blood, pulled punches and telegraphing galore... You get the Idea.
This film has its winning aspects, however. Leguizamos charismatic performance as Lex Vargas gives the film it's energy, and Vanessa Ferlito refreshes as the beautiful Lisette, a woman with her own agenda, and a thankful departure form the boxers-crying-girlfriend we've seen all too many times before.
All in all, undeeated is good, solid, popcorn movie fare. A bit of action, a bit of sex appeal and good acting all round. But if you're after a boxing movie with a bit more substance, there are other places you could go.
"Undefeated is over-rated!".......2004-08-29
John Leguizamo lied. When he was hopping from talk show to talk show plugging this movie, which he starred in and also (unfortunately) directed, he said that the boxing scenes were superior to those in Will Smith's "Ali" and were on the level of those in "Raging Bull." He must have been on crack when he made these observations. "Undefeated" is a predictable movie about a Latino fighter who rises to the top and has to deal with hangers-on and leeches. This kind of movie, featuring Latinos, is long overdue. But while Leguizamo's convincing acting is alright, the directing leaves a lot to be desired. The movie has no moral, but just goes on in on, showing all the bling-bling and the drugs and alcohol that are a part of having huge sums of money and no ability to say "no." This is the worst boxing movie since that piece of crap Brian Dennehey and Cuba Gooding Jr. made back in 1992, called "Gladiator." DOn't waste your dime or your time purchasing this video; it's only gonna sit on your shelf, waiting to be "boxed" up when you decide to move.

I liked, it was pretty okay in my opinion. I guess because I`m such a big fan of clifton collins jr. I am so ready for march 23rth to get here. But again, it was cool. I like boxing movies, and john is also agreat actor, so it`s cool

udefeated was somewhat of a dissapointment.if i wasn't such a huge fan of john leguizamo's this movie would have been terrible.it was both predictable and typical.man suffers and dreams.man finds success.man leaves friends behind.man falls in love w/ the used whore.the ending was horrible, no one knows what the hell happened.
now for the good part:great boxing scenes, leguizamo's abs
Only see this movie if you are a huge john leguizamo fan or boxig fan.

My Review of Undefeated.......2005-07-06
First of all, something you need to know before ordering this DVD, and there is nothing in the product information that would indicate this. This DVD is about the 1968 undefeated team, NOT the 2002 undefeated team.
The DVD is hosted by a radio personality from Columbus, and he interviews Coach Earl Bruce, and a player from the team, Larry Zelina. They briefly discuss the entire season, game by game, and then show highlights of each game, after the discussion. With one exception, the highlights of the Rose Bowl game are minimal, and done as the video end credits run.
The game film is black and white, but not bad considering the age, and has been digitally remastered. Overall, not bad, and a good "history lesson" of one of OSU's all time great teams for the younger fans.
