Bought these movies for my dad as a gift. So glad I thought to check on amazon. I bought several multipacks of dvd's to give as gifts, saving me the time & gasoline that shopping around would have taken. I feel as tho I couldn't have done better elsewhere.

These movies are all amazing. You'll find yourself asking "Who do these people think they are?" to those screwing around with Clint Eastwood, "He's about to kill them and their family".

Another aspect of these movies is the recurring theme of the consequences of violence, especially in Unforgiven. This movie won the academy award and is both thoughtful and violent, not to mention starring Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman along with Clint Eastwood.

This price for the 3 ($19.99) can't be beat. Unforgiven alone generally retails at about $14. Highly recommended!

Why am I bothering?.......2007-01-19

If you seriously have to read a review as to why this boxed set is so great than you are a lost cause. However, if you have been living in a cave or just got rescued from a deserted island after being gone for the last 30 years or so, than I guess your off the hook.

If you fall into the latter, than suffice it to say that 2 of these are the greatest Clint Eastwood movies of all time. "Unforgiven" itself transcends the western into something so fantastic that I don't have time here to list the reasons why. Just buy it!!!!!!

what a profound western movie.......2007-04-06

the role clint eastwood played in this movie was actually the unity of the biblical 'four horsemen', a grand assembly of all the western genre movies and books could put together. no wonder eastwood would have signed on to do this western again after a long lapse, because it's too good to not to take this role. and he's more mature, more powerful, more dominant on the big screen.
a pale rider coming, going and then disappeared in the wildness, into the far mountains after he did what he had to do with the bad and the ugly. the young girl and her mother both fell for him but neither could keep him. he's just a wandering guardian angel to the poor and the helpless, a calamity thunderbolt to the scumbags in the west territory.
i just wish america could have more this kind of greatness and humanity like what the western novels and movies always giving us, not like nowadays shameless politicians and the current administration. because it's not the true color of the real americanism. not halliburton, not blackwater, not pentagon, not those two-face law makers on the hills. they;re actually destroy the real values of america and the americans. how and why in the world today's america and americans become so shameless, so unjustifiably corrupted.
the whole america now more desperately needs such pale rider. when the boy ran out to call the riding away 'shane', when the young girl ran out to call that 'pale rider', it only meant that bad guys around such neighborhoods were thoroughly cleaned up, so they both could ride away. so when could expect some pale riders coming from the cold? don't expect fbi or homeland security guys would timely show up at your door, guys, don't expect the modern day's sheriffs would show up to offer free help or assistance. don't call 911 so freely, because it's not free at all, when you call for help, fire engine, police cruiser, ambulance, the 3 stooge would show up at the same time. the ride to the hospital e.r. is the most expensive taxi service in the whole universe. two traffic lights, 1 block drive would cost you at least $1,650.00. also, if you call for help in the evening, they not only would charge you, but would cost tax payers more money for their 'overtime'.
there's no pale rider anymore but stealth bombers in america now. and don't leave your wallet at home before going to the church, because your face would become pale or crimson when the contribution bag coming up to you.
but if you really want to find a rider in such paleness, you might have to try stephen hunter's 'pale rider coming'. at least you could find a fictitious one on acid-free paper.

Great Western!.......2007-03-17

A good western starring Clint Eastwood released in 1985 bringing a more developed plot variation of "High Plains Drifter" released several years before. The film benefits from a good screenplay and script in which there are more well developed characters to keep the audience interested.

The film is set in a small mining town where independent miners are terrorized by the boss who owns the mine and adjacent town. Clint Eastwood rides into town as "The Preacher" and sides with the beleaguered miners against the local boss. The film remains mysterious as to whether "The Preacher" is really a man or a ghostly apparition from the past coming to claim revenge for past misdeeds. The town boss eventually hires a crooked Marshall and his posse to take care of The Preacher and there seems to be a past connecting them together. The Preacher almost leads one to think that he was the main character in "Hang 'Em High" because of the noose mark on his neck that he hides with a scarf.

This is certainly one of Eastwood's better westerns that has a good plot and extensive character development. The film also has a certain element of the supernatural as no one knows exactly whether Eastwood's character is a living man or an avenging ghost coming out of the past. Overall an excellent film worth renting or owning.

Not your average western.......2007-03-14

This is a very entertaining Clint Eastwood western, that I have probably watched more times than any other film. Its nearer 5 stars for me in fact. Certainly if you've see Shane and Eastwoods own High Plains Drifter you'll have a good idea what to expect.
However, there is more going on here than you might initially think. Eastwoods preacher certainly appears to be a ghost or supernatural apparition of some sort. In the prelude to the final gunfight he should be dead (this is the scene where the preacher sits with his back to the door drinking Coffee). The supernatural element is hinted at a few times but not overplayed.
Whether you accept the premise of a supernatural element is actually irrelevant. Eastwood plays the part with his usual conviction and magnetic screen presense. You'll believe that he could outgun or outfight a whole army on his own - supernatural or not!

Entertaining but flawed.......2007-03-09

The main character is typical Clint Eastwood - strong, stoic, independent. The plot has just enough complexity to be entertaining without too much confusion, and the characters have reasonable depth. The only troubling scene is a rape scene in the beginning. The audience is supposed to accept that she "really wanted it" - a dangerous message, I think.

Eastwood at his best.......2007-03-09

Seen just about all of the movies made/ directed by clint eastwood yet this is one of the most haunting. And as many times as I have seen it, it is fresh, almost like seeing it for the first time. The contrast between the placer and hydraulic mining and their adherents is especially riveting. Movie just grabs you.

Two classic westerns for the price of one.......2004-06-14

"The Outlaw Josey Wales" remains one of Clint Eastwood's most underrated westerns. Behind "Unforgiven", it's it's his best, most emotionally complex western (although "High Plains Drifter" comes in as a close second). The transfer here is very good although I did notice a glitch that appears to be on the original film--a discoloration on the print at the very bottom about an hour in to the film. It's a minor flaw. There's also quite a bit of hair and dust during the montage of fighting between the Union and Confederates. The extras, while not as great as "Unforgiven", are pretty good as well. We get the theatrical trailers, a documentary on the making of the film as well as Eastwood's own introduction (although it doesn't replace the need for a commentary track).
