The Jack Bull was produced for and premiered on HBO, but it's easily the most respectable job that feature director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, WarGames) has done in the past two decades. The title refers not to a piece of livestock but a metaphorical Jack Russell terrier that, once it's annoyed enough to close its jaws on something, will hang on to the point of death.

That would be Myrl Redding (John Cusack), a horse-breeder of limited means but a deeply entrenched sense of justice. His independence galls Henry Ballard (L.Q. Jones), the crusty land baron out to set his brand on most of the countryside. Ballard insults and cheats Redding several times over, and his men beat Redding's horse trainer and friend, an Indian (Rodney A. Grant). When Redding seeks redress from the law, its agents can't be bothered (the local magistrate is in Ballard's pocket). So Redding musters a vigilante army to enforce his own law.

Scratch this handsome but rigorously unromanticized Western--fully an hour passes without a shot being fired--and you find the classic Heinrich von Kleist book Michael Kohlhaas transposed to Wyoming Territory on the eve of statehood. The script--by the star-producer's dad, Dick Cusack--is sturdy and uncompromising, willing to engage the knotty ambiguities of embracing vigilantism even in a just cause. Badham's decision to treat the authorities (Scott Wilson, Jay O. Sanders, John Goodman) as period caricatures is regrettable. But John Cusack is solid as a figure of utterly matter-of-fact integrity. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
When wealthy landowner Henry Ballard sets up a toll gate and takes two of Myrl Redding?s horses in lieu of payment, Redding is enraged. But when those horses are starved and beaten almost to death, he demands justice. So begins a personal feud that becomes a war .. a war that becomes a manhunt ... and a trial that will lead to a bloody kind of Western justice.

Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PARODY ON SUPERPOWER GOVERNMENTS.......2007-07-06

This work is a wonderful parody on how the so called super powers of the world (past or present) poster themselves.

It shows all that although the governments may try to be oh so serious, they end up looking like bumbling idiots falling all over each other with the ultimate destruction of all as a result.

Riding the bomb rodeo style was a nice touch - GREAT WORK!

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Strangelove.......2007-06-27

The most inspired piece of Cold War satire ever and one of the screen's supreme black comedies, Kubrick's 1964 "Strangelove" confronted jittery audiences in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and not long after the advent of the H bomb. With Kubrick's twisted genius as director and screenwriter in full bloom, and peerless performances by Peter Sellers (in three roles), Scott, and the unhinged Hayden, the film is unbearably funny and extremely disturbing all at once.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Black Comedies.......2007-06-21

This work doesn't need much explaination. It is a true classic black comedy. It uses humaor to show how ludicrous and easily corrupted our governments truly are. It simultaneously shines a homorous and frightening light on nuclear war. In my opinion, this is well worth your time. And if you are interested in nuclear war, World War III or end times works, I highly recommend the book Mysteries of the Universe... it is shocking, controversial and frightening! Here's tha amazon page link: Mysteries of the Universe: A Revolutionary Commentary on UFOs, Aliens, Angels, Pyramids, Bible Codes, Reincarnation, the Antichrist...

5 out of 5 stars Watch This Movie and Sleep Better At Night .......2007-06-12

This movie offers the best tongue and cheek commentary on the absurdities of war. I am sure this movie has been heavily "borrowed" from by Hollywood. The "Survival Kit Content Check" scene reminded me alot about the more recent "duct tape your windows" survival tactics. If you believe that the end of the world will come in a flash of light, this movie will validate you.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful Import~ Stop Bitching!.......2007-06-23

Yes, there is not a US edition of The African Queen. So be happy with what we have got in this Asian import. The picture and sound are just fine. The DVD played perfectly in my player, and turing off the subtitles were as easy as reading the instructions on the menu.

So until we get the 2 disc special editon here in the US, order this import edition. It's a must and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Things aren't always what they seem.......2007-06-22

Be somewhat forgiving in criticizing movie releases. It is my understanding that the copyrights for "The African Queen" is privately held which may be why it has never been released on DVD in the USA,i.e., the copyright owner has not released their rights for reproduction. Just recently "Marie Antoinette" with Norma Shearer was put to DVD and that movie, although not on par with "The African Queen" is one of my favorites. Again, the copyright may have been privately held which precluded earlier adaptation to DVD.

Also, I agree with the reviewer regarding "Widescreen". The old movies will not come out in widescreen because that is not how they were filmed.

5 out of 5 stars Please release this DVD in Region 1.......2007-06-22

I just wanted to add in my support of having this DVD released in the US. There is so much crap out there on DVD - why are the classics being held back? I would buy this in a second if it were given a proper release.

DVD was good til the last 5 minutes or so, then it started to skip. I reversed for a few minutes and restarted and this time it went all the way to the end without a problem. I will watch it again and if the problem occurs again, I will send it back for a replacement or refund.

Received the wrong CD Rom/DVD. Was sent The Jacksons instead of what I ordered....The African Queen.

Have not heard back from the merchant and it has been 3 weeks. Very disappointed. Will not purchase any other DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars The Thomas Crown Affair.......2007-07-02

This sleek, stylized movie's chic trappings and star chemistry still comprise a winning formula. It's fun to see the usually scruffy McQueen dressed to the nines in the title role, but Dunaway's the revelation. Stacked up against the wily, macho Crown, Vicky is his match in looks, confidence, and brains, so the inevitable seduction feels balanced and mutual. "Crown" is a sexy, suspenseful cat-and-mouse game waged between equals, with a nifty surprise finish. Innovative split screen cinematography from Haskell Wexler and a romantic Michel Legrand soundtrack make this one of the top "sixties time capsule" films.

4 out of 5 stars An Affair To Remember.......2007-04-10

The original "Thomas Crown Affair" directed by Norman Jewison is one of the coolest movies ever made and great fun for all of its 100 minutes - a clever bank-heist caper combined with the sensual romance where both participants (the brilliant bank robber and his match, the sultry and shrewd insurance investigator) are sophisticated, quick-witted and oh so cool. The split-screen technique really works well in this movie and I should mention the song "The Windmills of Your Mind" by Michel Legrand that very deservingly received an Oscar - and it does not happen often in the best song categories.

The chess game between "King Of Cool" Steve McQueen and 27 year old Faye Dunaway in the most provocative dress possible is one of the sexiest and most exiting without actual sex involved (my favorite kind of scenes - let my imagination work, let everything happen in my mind) scenes ever filmed. IMO, the 60s was one of the best dressed decades ever with the first wave of mini (and I mean it) skirts and elegant suits and dresses.

From Faye Dunaway's interview to "USA Today" about working with McQueen, "We had the most magical spark. Our hearts and souls combined. There was no romance off screen but on screen it was like a smack."

5 out of 5 stars The Thomas Crown Affair.......2007-03-22

An excellent movie for its time. Steve McQueen should have done more movies like this one.Simple and to the point, with real entertainment. This is a classic. R.R.T.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-02-18

Just as usual, Steve McQueen plays his role with magestry and unique style. Faye Dunaway does also a great job and her beauty is breath taking. One of the best McQueens feature film.

4 out of 5 stars McQueen at his classiest, Dunaway looking very hot.......2006-11-10

This movie was good when it came out and it has only gotten better. While the plot always seemed a bit of a stretch the remake with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo was even more so. And the ending of the original is so much better in my view. This 1968 gem is just short of a classic and has really stood the test of time. I have a 2 part test for whether or not I want to buy the DVD of a movie versus just rent. The first is that I want to watch the movie in its entirety more than once over time and second is that I want to cue up certain scenes from time to time. This movie passes both tests.

Clint Eastwood's second film as a director (and his first Western) is a variation on the "man with no name" theme, starring Eastwood as the drifter known only as "the Stranger." He rides into the desert town of Lagos and is quickly attacked by three gunmen. Recovering with the aid of a local dwarf (a memorable role for Billy Curtis), the Stranger is hired by the intimidated townsfolk to fend off a band of violent ex-convicts. After teaching the citizens self-defense and instructing them to paint the entire town red and rename it "Hell," the Stranger vanishes. He reappears when the marauding criminals arrive, and delivers justice and teaches the townsfolk a harsh lesson about moral obligation. Is he a figure from their past or a kind of supernatural avenger? Combining humor with action, High Plains Drifter is both a serious and tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Westerns that made Eastwood a household name. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars High Plains Drifter.......2007-07-03

Eastwood's eerie, magnificent "Drifter," his second effort in the director's chair, turns the final showdown cliché of the Hollywood Western on its head: Instead of confronting the killer posse alone, for money or out of brute contempt, The Stranger teaches the cowardly townsfolk how to defend themselves--then promptly disappears. And where else but in an Eastwood flick would the protagonist, for the purposes of intimidation, have a town literally painted red and renamed Hell? Such flashes of dark humor animate the story, as do The Stranger's haunting flashbacks, the austere sets, and the cast of irregulars. Enigmatic and violent, "Drifter" reworks the Man With No Name persona into a mystical folk hero, and the effect is riveting.

5 out of 5 stars Eastwood's first masterpiece as a director...........2007-06-16

This is Clint Eastwood's first masterpiece as a director. This was Eastwood's 3rd film (after Play Misty for Me and Breezy), and it still remains one of his best films. Misty and Breezy are excellent films, but this one is far better than both of them. Many critics have said this is a tongue in cheek Western. I digress strongly. Yes, there are humourous elements in it, but it's a morally complex, eerie, and brilliant piece of filmmaking. Eastwood's character doesn't really have a name, but this isn't an extension of his work with Sergio Leone. It has a lot to do with revenge, karma, greed, and what small town America in the west was really like. It wasn't like the idealised, "God-fearing" folk (that cliche gets a real takedown in this film) you see in typical Hollywood westerns. The ending is downright surreal, but it works brilliantly. Even the supporting players (especially Billy Curtis) are excellent here. A decent number of Eastwood's films have some bad acting in them in the supporting roles, but here that doesn't happen. Eastwood shot this masterpiece in 24 days, and under budget too. This was Clint's first great film.

5 out of 5 stars Clint's Homage to Sergio Leone.......2007-06-03

Clint Eastwood starred as the "man with no name" in many of Sergio Leone's "Spagetti Westerns." Here, Eastwood directs his own similar-type western, although, at the end of this flick, we find out that Eastwood's character really does have a name.

After Eastwood rides into the town of Lago and kills the three hired guns who were the village's protectors, he is hired by the townspeople as a replacement gunman. They hope that Eastwood will protect them from a ruthless gang that was sent to jail on trumped up charges by the townspeople. The gang members have done their time and are now coming back to get their revenge. But it turns out that Eastwood has his own reasons for wanting some revenge too.

"High Plains Drifter" ranks with the best of Leone's westerns. It is an excellent film and a classic of the genre, with a supernatural twist.

Eastwood's forgettable "Pale Rider" was a sort of remake of "High Plains Drifter." In "Pale Rider," however, the individualistic message of "High Plains Drifter" was replaced by a communitarian one.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad for plagiarism.......2007-05-24

Don't get me wrong, I like these old Eastwood westerns as much as the next guy, but this movie is almost a direct steal from a "Bonanza" eisode called "Twilight Town" that aired ten years before this movie came out. I have no respect for plagiarism no matter who stars in the movie. I did give it a few for entertainment value.

5 out of 5 stars Karma -- Clint Eastwood Style.......2007-04-12

It's a movie as morally complex as the history of America itself.

Yes, the town, Lago, has blood on its hands. Yes, the townspeople have flirted with evil by having three common thugs bullwhip their sheriff to death because he would likely report their mine as located on federal lands and so endanger their ambitions for limitless wealth. Yet, the movie also appears to see the town, Lago, as worthy of redemption.

After railroading the thugs into prison, the town very conveniently proceeds to pretend that nothing ever happened: "These are God fearing people," the new sheriff earnestly tells the High Plains Drifter. However, when the thugs are released from prison, they seek to receive their back wages in the blood of the townspeople who doublecrossed them.

Only when the townspeople experience the same terror that their bullwhipped sheriff must have experienced does the High Plains Drifter reappear to save them from the thugs. Indeed, at the end of movie, when the High Plains Drifter rides away from town on horseback, a tombstone is erected with the name of the murdered sheriff.

Unlike the outlaws, the townspeople feel a very real sense of collective guilt, which the High Plains Drifter and their ordeal have reawakened. Perhaps that is the hope of America -- that we do have guilt over our past and we do not just pretend that nothing ever happened.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Totally Enjoyable!.......2007-04-14

The older Disney cartoons are still the best. Many have not been seen in years and are now available. I relish every moment watching this DVD. Ferdinand The Bull has always been a favorite. Now I have it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Timeless Tales, Vol. 2.......2007-02-15

Reminded me of old times. Great DVD to have for the children.

3 out of 5 stars Unrestored RE-release of shorts from the TIN releases........2005-08-18

***** Five Stars for the cartoons themselves! I give the low *** three start rating because WE ALREADY HAVE THEM ON DVD!

This collection is a cheaply put-together, un restored, re-release of cartoons from the DISNEY TREASURES TINS! THESE ARE NOT FROM THE SAME MASTERS! So why buy something you already have?

1) THE UGLY DUCKLING (1939) also on the "Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies" DVD release.

2) COUNTRY COUSIN (1936) also on the "Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies" DVD release.

3) FERDINAND THE BULL (1938) also on the "Disney Treasures: Rarities" DVD release.

4) WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1949) segement from the feature Icabod & Mr. Toad. Amazon sells the entire feature for just $15.99

With the Disney Treasures DVD releases on limited availability, I guess Disney hopes those who missed out will buy these 4-cartoon discs. The low price is misleading, when you break it down to individual cartoon cost this release is EXPENSIVE!

And no extras!

5 out of 5 stars Cartoons on Disney's Timeless Tales, Volume Two.......2005-07-31

This DVD includes The Country Cousin (1936), Ferdinand the Bull (1938), The Ugly Duckling (1939) and The Wind in The Willows (1949). The Wind in The Willows was the first of the two animated sequences that are formed together to make The Adventures Of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949).

Product Description

Michael Jordan explodes on screen in this box office hit, Michael Jordan: To the Max. Get ready to experience some of the greatest moments in modern sports history from one of the most dominant sport legends of all time.

Amazon.com essential video

The greatest basketball player of all time gets an appropriate clip reel in this 45-minute documentary, which was originally released in the IMAX format. While you can't simulate IMAX's 80-foot-high screen in your living room, you can still get the thrills and awe-inspiring footage of this tribute to one man's talent and endurance. Much of the original footage was shot during the 1997 NBA Finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz. With great behind-the-scenes footage and terrific game material, the film gets close to Jordan in practice and on the court. And the film includes a number of greatest hits, including his commercials and most memorable dunks. Still, while there are intriguing interviews with everyone from former Bulls coach Phil Jackson to professional Jordan hanger-on Bob Greene, this film seems a little self-serving at times (Jordan's company coproduced it). Also, some key voices from that team are conspicuously absent, including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Ron Harper. In the end, however, it's all about the highlights--and Jordan's career (and his NBA finale) was one long one. --Marshall Fine

I haven't seen MJ to the Max and I hope I like it.

5 out of 5 stars MJ awesome on and off the court.......2004-08-31

I bought this DVD without really knowing what to expect. I didn't really expect the IMAX feeling to translate well to a smaller screen, and to tell the truth, it doesn't. But that is not a problem here.
Michael Jordan is an athlete larger than life and he does not need a big screen to relay that. His messages are powerful and his philosophy is an excellent source to anyone, but especially if you're raising children. He loves children in general, specifically his own, and a lot of what he says relates to children.
You will not be let down by this DVD, the message is powerful and MJ on the court is always a delight.

Michael Winterbottom is no stranger to literary adaptation. Both Jude and The Claim were drawn from works by Thomas Hardy. Nor is the versatile filmmaker a stranger to the post-modern romp, like 24 Hour Party People. In that paean to Manchester's music scene, Steve Coogan was Factory honcho Tony Wilson. In Winterbottom's take on Laurence Sterne's digressive The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, the prolific helmer combines literature with lunacy and brings Coogan back as the titular character--and then some. Coogan doesn't just portray the 18th century squire, but his father Walter and insecure actor "Steve Coogan." It's a film about the making of a film, effortlessly shifting between Tristram's tumultuous birth and his frustrated adulthood--bogged down in the writing of his life story--and between fiction and (what appears to be) fact. There are no end to the worries on and off the set: Coogan worries his heels aren't high enough, Rob Brydon worries his teeth are too yellow, and Coogan's girlfriend (Kelly Macdonald) worries she isn't seeing enough of him. It may sound like Spike Jonze's Adaptation, but in spirit, it more closely resembles Tony Richardson's Tom Jones. Coogan and his co-stars, particularly Naomie Harris as the ultimate film nut, Gillian Anderson as the American brought in to boost the project's profile, and Brydon as Tristram's Uncle Toby are as game for the challenge as their fearless leader. Consequently, Tristram Shandy isn't just one of Winterbottom's best films--it's one of the year's best. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Michael Winterbottom?s TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY is a rollicking, inventive adaptation of the notoriously unfilmable British comic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, written by Laurence Sterne. Crammed with literary jokes and dark humor, and aided by stellar performances by Jeremy Northam, Rob Brydon and Naomie Harris, Shandy?s warped tales reveal far more about himself than any conventional autobiography.

3 out of 5 stars A film about making films.......2007-04-23

This film starts off as an 18th romp and just when you are getting tired of it veers off into a film about the MAKING of an 18th century romp.

It has many sly comments to make about film-making - vain actors, cheapskate producers, crazy technical consultants...

Like many of these types of films it is amusing but leaves one ultimately unsatisfied as you have the carpet pulled out from you too many times.

Another interesting film from the hardworking Michael Winterbottom.

1 out of 5 stars THE BEST ADVICE YOU WILL RECEIVE TODAY (EXCEPT FOR NO ONE OVER THE AGE OF 5 SHOULD WEAR A STRIPED TEE SHIRT).......2007-04-20

This is my good deed for the day. Save your money, increase your pleasureable hours...do not buy, watch or rent this movie. Please understand, I love movies. My favorites range from Olivia De Haviland in The Heiress to Love Actually and everything in between (ie: Harry Potter, Star Wars, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood etc etc etc). Tristam Shandy a cock and bull story was an incomprehensible mess. It was not funny, it was not interesting, it was not touching, amusing, warm or anything one wants from a movie. Even a nice scare (watch Julie Harris in the original The Haunting for a 1st class scare) is worth ones time but not this disaster of a movie.
Anyway, forgive me for the aformentioned striped tee shirt warning, I could not help myself. This might be the worst movie I have seen in quite a while. It was even worse than Eragon and that was BAD.

3 out of 5 stars A Shambling Mess!.......2007-04-04

First, I confess to not having read the novel, although I am familier with some works of the period, the literary style, and the history of that time. This movie is trying very hard to be something that it is not; which is good comedy. There is a strong effort to have a sardonic humor which seems to fall flat. There seems a bizarre combo here of Monty Python with FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN. Both syles mix the past with the present, or the on scene off scene moments. Humor is brought into the realms of the surreal, which can work sometimes, but here it seems to fall flat on its face.

There is too much emphasis on the current day situations of the actors. Perhaps this is some attempt to match the feelings of the book in some strange way, but I certainly did not get it. I think the production could have been as witty and sardonic if it had not shown the modern set, but just stuck to the story itself. I am sure a more satisfying way to portray the unique mood of this novel could have been conveyed to the viewer without the choatic mess we have here. And where is the epic seige of Namur in 1695? Wasn't this in the original novel? This was one of the key seiges of the Dutch wars against Louis XIV in his efforts of expansion. Too see all these movie people with their off-hand attitudes confirms my views of how history often suffers in their so-called creative hands. Reminds me of the cute little film with Alan Alda SWEET LIBERTY which also conveys how films distort and twist historical facts around, let alone the spirit of an old novel from the past.

Cinema students might like the production shots, and all the politics invovled on the set, but otherwise there is little to recommend this choatic, messy affair. You will need something to calm your senses after watching all the confused activity that leads to no where in it. Not a satisfying movie.

3 out of 5 stars An accurate period piece... not.......2007-03-20

The classic novel by Laurence Sterne is best described in this movie: "This is a postmodern novel before there was any modernism to be post about."

So it sounded pretty disastrous that a film was being adapted from it. Actually, half a film -- the other film is a mockumentary about a film crew desperaately trying to make some kind of movie, out of a book with way too much material. It's wickedly clever, but there's too little Tristram Shandy and too much about the shoes.

While his mother is in labor, a grown Tristram Shandy (Steve Coogan) narrates the backdrop of his life -- his awkward conception, the farcical circumstances of his birth, early penile injury, his uncle's obsessions and (ahem) war wounds, and the circumstances of being named Tristram (and not Trismegistus, which is even worse).

But then we cut to the real world, where a film crew is filming the whole thing. Star Steve Coogan (himself) and director Michael Winterbottom (Jeremy Northam) are struggling to make this novel as true to the spirit of Stern's book as possible. The problem is, there's WAY too much material, and everyone wants different aspects -- love story, battle, his own character -- to stand out as the MAIN part of the story. Will the movie be funny? A sell-out? A big confusing mess?

Filming an unfilmable book is usually either going to be a disaster or a masterpiece -- for the latter, look at "Lord of the Rings." But "Tristram Shandy" hovers somewhere in the middle, courtesy of its mockumentary storyline, and some pointed mockery of the studio bigwigs.

Basically, the bigwigs interfere and insist on stars -- such as Gillian Anderson, who barely makes it to the final cut -- and hoard money, because the movie is too quirky for their tastes. Meanwhile, the stars quibble about minutiae (like shoe height), and real-life director Michael Winterbottom deliberately blurs the lines of fantasy and reality, letting one seep into another. And it has Coogan in a giant plastic womb.

And there's an extra kudos for the dialogue. Half of it is deliciously witty modern stuff ("The thing is, I can't act..." "I know that." "... with Gillian Anderson. I have a proper sexual thing for Gillian Anderson. I covet her"), but there's a whole different style for Tristram. He tends to have these faux-serious metafictional monologues, which end up being very funny ("That is a child actor, pretending to be me. I'll be able to play myself later").

The problem? Well, there's too much of Coogan and not enough Shandy, especially in the second half. It would have improved the movie dramatically to cut some of this stuff about Coogan flirting with Jennie out, because it's really quite dull compared to Tristram. When the fantasy/reality starts leaning too heavily into reality, the movie starts sagging. Big time.

Coogan does a pretty good job playing himself, but he's much better as Tristram/Walter -- arch, wry and kind of inconsiderate. Rob Brydon is enormous fun as himself/Toby, and Naomie Harris is fairly good as a movie nut who specializes in arty German cinema, and not much else. Anderson isn't in the movie for long, but her "equipment" scene is gutsplittingly funny.

"Tristram Shandy - A Cock and Bull Story" is a very funny film, but one bogged down by too much reality (and Coogan). Entertaining, witty and strange.

5 out of 5 stars Pre-postmodern . . ........2007-03-19

The ads for this film show Steve Coogan in period costume sitting in a director's chair with a cell phone in his hand and wearing trainers. That willful mix of past and present should be a dead give away. Laurence Sterne's post-modern novel (written as we are told well before the modern novel) finds its way to the screen as a kind of making-of documentary often found on DVDs. Coogan addresses the audience much as Sterne does, telling the life story of Tristram Shandy and discovering that the events of life proceed forward faster than you can possibly record them. And since identifying first causes requires moving backward rather than forward in time, any expectations of narrative can be frustrated even further. We get to witness the title character's conception, his birth (numerous times), his christening, and a rather ugly incident from his childhood involving a window sash and a tender body part.

Much of the rest of the film, in modern dress, concerns the cast and supposed crew of the film being made - Jeremy Northam playing a slick director and Kelly Macdonald as Coogan's long-suffering girlfriend with a perpetually squalling baby. The off-camera debates and struggles over the direction of the film provide the chief dramatic conflict, and it is not incidental. The film even starts in make-up where Coogan gets a false nose while arguing with co-star Rob Brydon over the nature of the credit he should be getting. Coogan's droll and earnest persona, delivered often in a kind of confused, pained deadpan, is fun to watch, and the chaotic process of film-making calls to mind other films of the genre, e.g., Truffaut's "Day For Night." Good fun, but don't expect too much of Laurence Sterne.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet love story........2007-03-27

This is a really cute film made in 1973. I really enjoyed it. Loved all the early 1970's clothes & cars, too. Though it seems very unrealistic & unlikely that a 19 year old would find love with a man of 55, this film makes it very believable. Breezy (Kay Lenz) is a beautiful free spirited teenage hippie (she looks like a cross between Jessica Simpson and Hilary Swank). Holden is a middle aged, concervative, recently divorced & hardened workaholic with a beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills. He picks the teenager up one day hitchiking & takes her in to live with him. They have nothing in common (but a stray dog) but a deep bond emerges between them anyway. They fall in love within a matter of days. He states that he is twice her age when in fact he is almost 3 times her age! There is a beautiful scene where they unexpectedly kiss for the first time at the beach. The love scenes are tastfully done. She's not after his money and he's not after her body. They are mismatched soulmates that fall in love.
A few times his friends and ex wife see him out with Breezy at the movies and out to dinner and he becomes uncomfortable and they break up for a short time only to reunite at the end. A wonderful love story. It makes you believe anything is possible.

5 out of 5 stars Filling my Pockets with Peppermint and Thyme.......2006-12-23

BREEZY beats most of Clint Eastwood's present-day output by a country mile, for it has no pretensions to being anything other than what it is, and plus in hindsight it is, oddly enough, one of the movies that best tells it like it was about hippie culture. The things that seemed "off" about it back in the day (Michel Legrand's "folk music" theme, for example, repeated endlessly, even in a sitar variation) have reached a pitch of resonance today. I for one, got ready to weep every time the orchestra seemed about to launch into the nth variation on "Breezy's Song." Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote many bad lyrics in the period, but their lyric for "Breezy's Song" perfectly encapsulates the hippie ethos that Kay Lenz' character is supposed to embody.

She is great, and another example of the strong roles for women that Eastwood seems drawn to even from the beginning. She is so young and beautiful, nearly flawless, that it seems odd her hair is always clean like a Breck girl, even in the beginning scenes when she exclaims over William Holden's shower as though she's never seen one. He plays Frank Harmon, a real estate agent in Laurel Canyon. That's the weak part of the picture, Eastwood never makes Holden believable as a salesman. He's not driven enough. He's more laidback than the hippies on the corner. Almost as great are the twists and turns that the screenplay makes. On the surface a placid little mood piece, BREEZY has at least two great shocks, both taking place in hospitals, that will leave you with your jaw on the floor. Jo Heims, who did this screenplay, was also responsible for an earlier Eastwood vehicle, the thriller PLAY MISTY FOR ME, and she knows how to throw a curveball. Shame that she is not more widely recognized among the great screenwriters, but perhaps her tragically early death has something to do with her current eclipse. For me, all the things people say Robert Towne does, Jo Heims really does, but backwards and in high heels.

(She also wrote the Patty Duke thriller YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER.)

Holden is good, and manages to look younger as the movie rolls on and the love of Breezy reinvigorates him. Ultimately the movie depends on how much you can stand of Kay Lenz. Some think she's too intense for the movie. For others, she will seem too twee with her positivist philosophy of finding a bright spot in anything and counting on love to see her through. Her frequent nudity is unabashed and "natural," and it's great to see a woman on screen whose breasts are so very different from each other, something you hardly ever see today in Hollywood! A wonderful bonus is the presence of Jamie Smith-Jackson as Breezy's best girlfriend, the miserably drug-addled hippie girl Marcie. Jamie Smith-Jackson! Cult legend of cult legends! Not only did she star in SATAN'S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, but she WAS "Alice" in GO ASK ALICE!

4 out of 5 stars Good Things Do Come in Small Packages.......2006-12-04

A small but well-crafted movie with good performances. Kay Lenz's movie career never worked out and this is a later work by Holden and an earlier work by Eastwood. Thus, Breezy isn't watched much anymore. Very interesting in showing how Eastwood developed and Holden settled, if that sort of insight interests you. The pace is lesurely and dialogue and plot somewhat passe nowadays. A must for Holden or Eastwood completists.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing May-December love story.......2006-06-20

Clint Eastwood directed this interesting film about a May-December relationship at a time of monumental change in America. William Holden plays a middle-aged, buttoned-down collar, conservative businessman who falls for the young, vivacious, counter-culture hippie Kay Lenz. Lenz is not your LSD-popping whacko nut-job, but a pretty decent, sane positive-thinking individual who brings a certain joie de vivre to Holden's humdrum existence; but he's too ruffled by their age difference and takes on life to let himself commit to her. Eastwood knows how to get the sparks flying between the two, however, and the movie is a compelling look at two incompatibles dancing around each other in dangerous though intriguing territory. The viewer is uplifted and richly satisfied when the movie is all over.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding love story! Fine acting, cast, plot, humor.......2006-01-10

All right. it's, ahem, inter-generational love, but all the sweeter for being ultimately doomed..maybe.

Frank is burned out. He's had all the women and success he wants, and he's at the "is this all there is?" stage. Nothing touches him. He's seen it all..

And then...Breezy! This bright beautiful happy hippy chick flows into his acerbic world. He fights it. He ain't interested. He sends her away. He tries to ditch her. He knows it's wrong. But...

Kay Lenz is beautiful. And nude. Frequently. That's a heck of a fine combination all by itself, but her sunny disposition and William Holden's burnt-out sardonic adultness just strike sparks together you won't see often in a movie. Maybe not a movie to watch with your jealous aging wife, but a fine amusing bittersweet and humorous flick of an unusual love affair with two excellent stars. You won't forget Breezy..

I had never heard of this movie when I saw it in the store. It seemed to have all the makings of a western, but I hadn't associated John Cusack or John Goodman with Westerns.I was also not familiar with most of the other actors in the movie. One of the liner notes stated,"Gritty western harks back to John Wayne and Clint Eastwood classics.".Since that would be a lot to stand up to,I thought I would give it a try.
Was I ever impressed! This is a fine crafted Western movie in all respects. It has a great storyline that grabs your attention right in the beginning and holds it completely up to the end .Just as the story comes to its unusual end ,and we don't want to let go; we are eased back to reality with a moving song and music by Bob Dylan,"Ring Them Bells",sung by himself.
This gripping saga is quite unlike any Western that I can think of. When I finished ,I read all the reviews and found some real interesting things. The story is based on a book written way back in the year 1810.And that it was written in German and had nothing to do with America and the Old West.It must have been a teriffic piece of creative work to adapt it to the location and time of Wyoming Territory obtaining statehood. The outdoor scenes were filmed around Calgary,Alberta and the movie is filled with excellent scenery and excellent use of photography in creating appropriate moods and atmosphere. While there is some shooting,it is very minimal, except for the scene where the Military uses massive gunfire and even a Gatlin gun to mow down a few Indians in an ambush. The movie deals with a lot about personl feelings, corruption and outrageous application of justice. In the fast development
