William Wyler directed this epic Western, about the clash of East and West, intellect and action. Gregory Peck stars as a sea captain who moves way out West to marry Carroll Baker and become part of the ranch owned by her father (Charles Bickford). But he discovers that daddy's top hand (Charlton Heston) carries a torch for Baker and doesn't particularly like Peck stepping into his place. Peck also finds himself caught in the midst of a power struggle between Bickford and his surly neighbor, Burl Ives (and his reprehensibly bullying son, Chuck Connors). This long, sprawling tale works because its characters are played by movie stars who know how to command the big screen in a big story. --Marshall Fine

Former animator Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Batman, Mars Attacks!) made his feature directorial debut with this delightful comedy, coscripted by the late Phil Hartman (who also appears briefly as a reporter). Wisely, they keep the story simple so as to concentrate on the characters: Pee-wee's most prized possession, his shiny new bicycle, is stolen, and he sets off on an obsessive cross-country journey, determined to recover it. Pee-wee's awkward and childish attempts to be cool and mature ("I meant to do that!!") are hysterical, as when he tells his girlfriend (Elizabeth Daly): "There's things about me you don't know, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you shouldn't understand.... I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel." Look for Saturday Night Live vet Jan Hooks in a hilarious bit as a tour guide at the Alamo. And beware of Large Marge! --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious and classic.......2007-06-27

This movie can be enjoyed by a person of any age. There are so many memorable moments and funny lines.

5 out of 5 stars "What do you want to be when you grow up?".......2007-06-24

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
I'm sure most of us have been asked this question at some point. And some of us, in our infinite wit, replied that we weren't planning on growing up, thank you very much. But how many of us meant that?

It looks like Pee Wee Herman did. Part insanity, part compassion, and all exuberance, he combines the wants of a child with the ability to actually get these things that adults possess. A breakfast-making machine built out of everything under the sun, a basement for holding secret meetings, and an absurdly wonderful bike, among others. But one day that bike of his disappears, and Pee Wee sets out on a wild goose-chase to get it back.

When this was shown in my high-school class, some of the kids found certain parts awkward - such as Pee Wee rolling around with Francis, with the spoiled child in the nude - but the creepiness in such scenes just melts when you realize that Pee Wee Herman is not an adult. He is a child, as much of one as we ever were, and he has managed to retain the innocence that many of us lost.

(As a bonus, you get some neat commentary from the directors and the music to boot. How's that for a good deal?)

3 out of 5 stars My Good Friend Pee-Wee!!!.......2007-06-07

Jesus, this is a cult classic. Man-child Pee-Wee Herman loses the most precious thing in the world to him, his bike, and sets out on an adventure to find and reclaim his lost possession. The oddball humor mixed with Tim Burton's surreal directing give this flick an otherwordly flavor. And the characters, man: Francis, the spoiled rich kid; Mickey, the escaped con; Satan's Helpers; Mario, the magic store owner; Amazing Larry ("Do you have something to say, Amazing Larry?!?!?"; these are but some of the many goofy people in the life of Pee-Wee. Above all, the climax is the best part of the movie, the escape from the Warner Bros. studio lot being perhaps one of my favorite pieces of cinematic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars pee wee makes it big.......2007-05-31

This is pee wee's crowning achievement and a movie which should last for years.. Paul reubens character was something truly extraordinary - an odd eccentric quirky man-boy.. His mannerisms are what make him so interesting.. and the gadgets in his home are like the fantasies a child might dream up.. He made even me want to be pee wee herman when i grew up.. while in retrospect that might be disturbing.. it was the truth for many children of the 80's..
Pee wee's big adventure follows pee wee in search of his lost bike.. it is hilarious and restores faith in the possibilities of creating a comic gem..

5 out of 5 stars The Big Country - One of the Top 5 Westerns of All Time.......2007-07-03

A first class story, cast and music combine to create one of the top five westerns ever filmed. Burl Ives, Chuck Conners, Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker and Charles Bickford are superior in their roles and the theme music stays in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Country.......2007-06-26

William Wyler's sprawling Western epic is aptly named, since everything about this film is big, including breathtaking panoramas, a close to three hour run time, and a larger-than-life, Oscar-winning performance from singer/actor Burl Ives as a rough-hewn rancher. It feels a trifle leisurely at first, but hold on and you're soon in the grip of this sweeping epic, which offers plentiful doses of romance, suspense, and high emotion. A stolid Peck carries the picture throughout. Also look for TV's Chuck Connors ("The Rifleman", "Branded") in a juicy role as Ives's ne'er-do-well son.

5 out of 5 stars Wyler's Powerful Epic Highly Underrated.......2007-06-17

Few westerns capture the eye and the imagination as does this majestic, cinematic opera. Bringing together the grand acting talents of Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston, Charles Bickford, Chuck Connors, and Alfonso Bedoya was truly "big"; however, matching them against a magnificent backdrop that cleverly captures the endless expanse of the American frontier - hence the name - was sheer genius. With a splendid score by Jerome Moross that stands the test of time and may be the best western motion picture score ever composed (possibly a dead heat with Elmer Bernstein's 'The Magnificient Seven'), 'The Big Country', for some strange reason, has never seemed to get its due reward.

The story captures a classic struggle between two land barons, ably portrayed by Charles Bickford as Major Henry Terrill, a cultured socialite, who runs the Ladder Ranch and his nemesis,Rufus Hannessey (Burl Ives) - the patriach of a clan of western, knuckle-dragging troglodytes who occupy a ranch beyond Blanco Canyon. While the dichotomy is rich, the portrayal by Burl Ives is nothing less than cinematic poetry - it just doesn't get better than this! The speech delivered by Hannessey (Ives) at the grand ball where Terrill (Bickford) announces the upcoming marriage between his daughter, Patricia (Carroll Baker), and her betrothed, Jim McKay (Gregory Peck), is very powerful and sets the tone for the conflict. In a battle over water rights and access to the "Big Muddy" - essential to both ranchers and their cattle, many characters and conflicts are enhanced.

The skill in character development is handled with such finesse, that despite the conflict, the audience finds qualities on both sides and is eager to root for Jim McKay (Peck) when he finally decides that the woman he met back East many years ago is not the woman he wants to marry. (Carroll Baker) plays a perfect "snot" who decides that McKay doesn't quite stand-up to the test of manhood that her father (Bickford) sets. Instead, McKay falls for beautiful Julie Maragon (Jean Simmons)and decides to use the property he purchased from her - containing the "Big Muddy" - to allow both feuding ranchers to partake in quenching the thirst of their cattle.

Look for Alfonso Bedoya, magnificent character actor, as a Terrill ranch hand - formerly "Gold Hat" ("we don't need no stinkin' badges") in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre". Also, Chuck Connors, who would shortly play TV's 'The Rifleman', plays Buck Hannessey with a terrificly solid portrayal as he attempts to woo Julie Maragon (Simmons) before McKay wins her over. Charlton Heston is relegated to the "back seat" as Terrill's ranch foreman who greatly dislikes McKay and believes that McKay doesn't deserve Patricia Terrill (Baker).

Filmed in multiple Arizona, New Mexico, and California locations - including, but not limited to - Canyon de Chelly, Chinle, Red Rock Canyon, Stockton, and Marysville, "The Big Country" is and remains a western classic. You can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Film.......2007-06-10

"The Big Country" is a film about a man and woman who comes of age long before the rest of the west does (and just happen to find each other). Gregory Peck, and Jean Simmons are perfectly casted, and superb in their roles. They don't belong in the west; there is no real place for them within our society either (not as it exist today, as most are yet to learn the lessons that their kind so amply teach -by simply being themselves). I was so glad they found each other; now it's up to us to search them out. I am a Philosopher and writer of aphorisms (thematic verse)whose work can be found on [...].

5 out of 5 stars ELVIS IS & YOU'LL SEE WHY .......2005-05-22

22 MAY 2005 ONCE YOU'VE SEEN THIS FLICK, IT'LL BE OBVIOUS TO THE MOST CASUAL OBSERVER WHY ELVIS IS THE KING OF ROCK&ROLL!!! THE TUNES ARE JUMPIN', & THE HOUSE IS ROCKIN'!!! THIS FLICK SHOWS ELVIS' RISE TO THE TOP, & WHY!!! WHAT IT DOES NOT SHOW IS, THE THIEVERY THAT HAD STARTED IN THE BACK GROUND, BY COL TOM PARKER! WHICH OVER THE YEARS REACHED THE ASTRONOMICAL POINT, TO THE TUNE OF 50% OF ELVIS!!! A BUSINESS MAN, ELVIS WAS NOT! JAILHOUSE ROCK & KING CREOLE, WERE 2 OTHER FLICKS WITH GREAT ELVIS TUNES. G.I. BLUES & BLUE HAWAII, ALSO HAD SOME GOOD ELVIS TUNES. BUT MOST OF THE OTHER ELVIS FLICKS WERE JUST SIMPLY MONEY MAKERS THAT COL TOM PARKER SET UP. THE DOCUMENTARY "THAT'S THE WAY IT IS", SHOWS ELVIS' CREATIVITY, PROFESSIONALISM, & THE MUSICAL PERFECTIONIST THAT HE WAS. AS IN, WE'RE GONNA GET THIS RIGHT FOR THE AUDIENCE, NO MATTER HOW MANY TAKES WE HAVE TO DO!!! FROM THIS FLICK, "LOVING YOU", IN 1957, TO THE LIVE SHOW I SAW IN 1977,,,(i saw elvis on the tommy dorsey show feb 1955 & followed him every since),,, THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THERE EVER WAS,, THAT'S ELVIS!!! (i just wished that the hangerson would have been smart enough to keep their gravy train on the tracks!!!) IN THIS FLICK, YOU'LL SEE ELVIS' MOTHER IN THE AUDIENCE. SHE IS SO EXCITED, & TAKE NOTE OF HOW SHE IS REALLY INTO HIS MUSIC!!! GREAT FLICK !!!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific movie, PERFECT DVD transfer!.......2004-04-07

First I would like to applaud Lion's Gate Home Entertainment for the perfect job they did with transferring this film to DVD. Having never seen this movie (gasp) before I bought it on DVD, the first thing I noticed was that they not only kept the original "VistaVision" opening sequence, but that the transfer was so flawless as to make it appear that I was watching it from a projector onto the silver screen. Splendid, wonderful, perfect transfer that I could not forget to mention. Sound is awesome as well, 5 stars to YOU, Lion's Gate.
Onto the film. It is true what people say here about the film being almost biographical about Elvis' early years. It is also very dramatic and is a wonderful mix of fun and drama. Here Elvis is still the young, wild stallion, the rebel King. He is lean and mean, and I think he knows it. Set in a smallish town, he is called up on stage to do a number spontaneously and the rest is history. A talent scout in the audience eventually coaxes him to leave behind the world of automobiles to become a musical legend. Trust is a main theme in this movie with Deke Rivers (Elvis) confused about his loyalties, or even if he should trust his own manager. Wow - very biographical come to think of it!
Did I mention how visually stunning the movie is? How beautiful and perfect the color is? Yes I did, but I can't stress it enough. This movie is ear and eye candy, with a great story to match.

3 out of 5 stars Forget Jailhouse Rock.......2003-08-28

This movie is a lot more fun than Jailhouse Rock and Viva Las Vegas. I could almost say it's better than Wild in the Country. They're definitely in competition.
This was before Wild in the Country and he's a better actor in this. Sad Wild came later. Elvis wasn't that good of an actor but he was an entertainer and he succeeds on that level in this movie.
Unlike Wild, this movie moves at a good pace. It is loaded with songs, lipsynced but it's still fun to watch them. Elvis plays a troubled country boy whose talent is discovered by Lizabeth Scott. Even in 1957, Lizabeth was still beautiful. She plays a half villian type role. The noir movies in the 40's were more suited for her but she pulls this off okay. Dolores Hart, who later was cast in "Where the Boys Are", gives a nice performance also as a pretty innocent country girl.
Wild in the Country is unintentionally funny all the way. But if you want a movie more closer to the definition of good I would go for this one. The last ten minutes are quite silly though.

5 out of 5 stars Small town girl, big star boy!.......2003-07-31

"Loving You" is based on a story written by Mary Agnes Thompson from the magazine Good Housekeeping. At the time she wrote the story, the young Oklahoma girl had no idea it would be transformed into the wonderful big screen sensation starring one of the biggest stars in the world. Even though the story seems biographical regarding Elvis, Mary Agnes Thompson knew nothing about him aside from hearing a couple of his songs on the radio. This movie is a must see for all, not only Elvis fans. If you're lucky enough to find a copy of the story, it is worth the read.

Judy Garland is at the peak of her charm and appeal as the title character of Presenting Lily Mars. The 19-year-old aspiring actress has great hopes for the future but can't seem to catch a break even when a Broadway producer (Van Heflin) returns to her small Indiana town for a family visit. Undeterred, she follows him to New York and earns a small part and a romance is sparked, but when the leading role unexpectedly opens up, will the talented youngster be ready? Presenting Lily Mars was released in 1943, the same year Garland would do her last collaboration with Mickey Rooney (Girl Crazy) and between her first significant adult roles, For Me and My Gal (1942) and Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). What the movie doesn't have is a lot of great music. Many of the songs are performed by other people, and while the few numbers Garland sings are gold, the songs themselves can't match the Gershwin and Arlen standards in many of her other films. The most notable is Brown & Freed's "Broadway Rhythm," which everyone should recognize from Singin' in the Rain--it's a rousing closer by Garland backed by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. With Marta Eggerth as Garland's operatic rival, and future jazz singer Annie Ross as Garland's singing and piano-playing younger sister. --David Horiuchi

Description

Presenting Judy Garland! Whether swinging a hot number with Bob Crosby's orchestra or emoting a hilariously hammy version of Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene, Judy is a delight as a stage-struck Hoosier in this charming film based on Booth Tarkington's novel. Lily just knows she has the talent to light up the Great White Way, so when a big Broadway producer (Van Heflin) visits her hometown, she expends all the candlepower of her charisma to impress him. He's not impressed. He heads back to New York and Lily follows, thumbing her way east on what she's sure is a one-way trip to instant stardom. At a mere 20 years old, Judy had already reached stardom. Presenting Lily Mars proves why, showcasing her once-in-a-generation voice, gift for comedy and enduring movie magnetism. Break a leg, Lily!

5 out of 5 stars A Dilly of a Movie..........2007-07-04

My Favorite Judy Garland Movie. She is Beautiful and what a voice. My best friends and I get together for his birthday every year and watch this movie while eating his version of Lilys star cake. A must see for all Garland fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-04-04

This is a movie that I had been looking for to come out on DVD. My old VHS was worn out from so many viewings, so I was thrilled to receive this DVD!

This one is a must for any Garland fan.

4 out of 5 stars good little known judy movie .......2007-03-13

I found this movie a long time ago on tape and later on tv. i was glad it came out on dvd. It is a little known Judy movie, but she looks wonderful in it. It is one her funniest movies, she is wonderful of a midwestern girl wanting to be an actress, but has to go where it can happen, New York to live in the "incubator" with her boughten hats. it is a charming film that all Judy Garland fans must see. The ending alone is worth it when she dances beautifully. It was too bad that this and the Clock didn't have a commentary from John Fricke, who knows everything about Judy. It would have a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Garland Gets Glamour.......2007-03-08

This delightful MGM musical was Judy Garland's first opportunity to rise above her little girl image and appear as a glamorous young woman. She romances older man, Van Heflin, and heads off to NYC to conquer Broadway. She eventually succeeds all around but not before hitting a few snags along the way. All is carried out in a humorous and fun-loving spirit. The supporting cast members are likable and clever without too much hokekum. The musical numbers are relatively few for a Garland movie and only the finale is a production piece. The songs are not Garland mainstays or any that she ever sang later in her career but are fresh and pleasantly entertaining. My favorite is the impromtu "Every Little Movement" in which Lily Mars lovingly duets with the theatrical char-woman, Connie Gilchrist, after she catches her sleeping in the theater. Judy was truly beautiful at 21 and her performance here marks the beginning of her career as an adult at MGM.

4 out of 5 stars JUDY FLIRTING????.......2007-03-04

The scene in the garden where Judy is flirting with Van is a cinematic gem! Its easy to see why so many men fell in love with her ! At 20 years old she seemed to be in complete control of her womanly powers over men. Somewhere along the road she lost it and thought of herself as ugly. At least we get to keep her (thanks to movies), as beautiful ,vivacious and sparkling !!!!!

But when he enters a local Toughman Contest, he discovers that he may have a knack for knockouts. Now with the help of his street-smart corner man (Stan Shaw of SNAKE EYES) and a crafty promoter (Warren Oates in his final film role), Art is headed to the National Finals in Detroit where all he'll have to do is beat up five guys in one night on national television to win $100,000, a recording contract, and the title of Toughest Man In America. Even if Art is crazy enough to try, will he be tough enough to win it all? Pam Grier and Wilford Brimley co-star in this wild action-comedy directed by Oscar® winner Richard Fleischer (TORA! TORA! TORA!, CONAN THE DESTROYER) and featuring songs by T.G. Sheppard, Mickey Gilley and Dennis Quaid.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Pleasure.......2005-09-26

I take great pleasure in the ridiculous situations which arise in this family and the dog. They make me laugh. I find this dog pleasant and congenial, so I love every one of his films.

5 out of 5 stars just plain fun.......2005-06-04

I don't know why so many people have a problem with this movie. Maybe the lack of gratutitious sex, violence, and foul language. Maybe they just need to get in touch with their inner child. It's just good clean fun, and I can watch it over and ever.

        5 out of 5 stars great movie!.......2004-11-18

if you are a dog lover this movie is for you fun and full of excitment

4 out of 5 stars My 4 yr old granddaughter.......2004-02-29

My 4 year old granddaughter loves this movie. I enjoy watching it with her. We have fun laughing and talking about the movie. I think it's great, mostly because she loves it. It's worth the money for your children, grandchildren that love animals.

2 out of 5 stars Boldly Going Where "Dog-Buddy" Movies Haven't Gone Before.......2004-01-30

It wouldn't be stretching the truth at all to say that Charles Grodin did more for the "Dog-Buddy" genre than, say, Richard Dreyfuss did for the "professor-guy" genre.
Judge Reinhold takes the reins in this third installment of the Beethoven movies. (Note: Grodin reputedly spent some time in Missouri working at a supermarket after his disappointing showing in Beethoven's 2nd). Reinhold is well-known as the star of about four or five "Police Academy" movies. In interviews with gossip magazines, Reinhold has repeatedly said that he wouldn't have done Beethoven's Third, 'cept he had absolutely "no talent" and "couldn't have realistically expected a better offer." That said, it would seem redundant to continue slamming the movie. It's bad. It's a commercially motivated slop-fest. I predict that Karl-Lorimar Home Video will buy the rights to this unfunny flick.

With the untimely passing of frontman Stuart Adamson in 2001, the title Final Fling couldn't be more sadly appropriate. This two-disc set captures Big Country toward the beginning and near the end of their 20-year career. The first disc features a 1988 performance from an outdoor peace concert in East Berlin, shortly before the release of Peace in Our Time (and before the Berlin Wall came down in 1989). It's a straightforward, electric set played in front of a huge, enthusiastic crowd during the twilight hours. The second disc finds the Scottish rockers back at their old stomping grounds, Glasgow's Barrowlands, while on their Driving to Damascus tour with the Alarm in 2000. They may look older, but their chiming twin-guitar attack is as passionate and rousing as ever. Both sets include such fan favorites as "Look Away," "Fields of Fire," and Top 40 hit "In a Big Country." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Awesome concert dvds.......2006-06-23

Not to go into what has already been coverd but this dvd set rocks! Have had this set for about two years and never get tired of it.I mainly watch the Glasgow's concert dvd not because I don't like the East Berlin concert, but the Glasgow concert brings back alot of good memories with the great music. As mentioned before in other reviews the sound is a fantastic 5.1 mix!The way all concert dvds should be.The video quality in the Glasgow concert is a little off at times but the show and music is so good you can't complain.A must for any level of fan of Big Country.

        5 out of 5 stars Gracias.......2005-07-09

        5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could.......2005-01-07

I have to admit that the first time I saw this video I laughed out loud. Why? Four grown men in t-shirts and kilts playing rock and roll. Wow. Well, now when I laugh it's shear joy...at their fantastic seasoned, fun, high energy performance. Bruce plays his heart out; Tony, cool as ever, ads his own magic on bass; Mark on the drums--clear and crisp--really showcases his talent. And Stuart....he was having a blast. You can see his love affair with the audience, and he gives above and beyond with energy, extra guitar solos, and, well, like I said, you could tell he was having fun (not as much fun perhaps as he did in Berlin at the peace concert--man, there he was shining, too, but in a younger "look at this crowd!" bright eyed and commanding demeanor). Back to Final Fling--here you see a mature Stuart and Company comfortable in their Scottish colors and....tennis shoes? And Tony is in black ankle boots, which is a hoot in itself. I've said a lot about the visual on this DVD but I have to add that the audio is outstanding...mesmerizing. This is a fantastic DVD.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff.......2003-08-16

5 out of 5 stars Big Time Music.......2002-12-28

The "live in berlin" DVD is well worth the price of this 2 DVD set. Hungry, energetic and singing/playing with passion. when is the last time you said that about a pop/rock band. A must have for Big Country fans, a "should have" for everybody else. The other disk "Glasgow Borrowlands", seemed more like a farewell/thank-you concert and wasn't as lively, but was a nice addition.

        4 out of 5 stars blushfully exquisite.......2000-05-11

The awkwardness & fascination of this pathetically sensative character(Cartaxo) brought back memories of my own adolescence. I was glued to the screen. Her vulnerability & innocence was painful to watch, yet I was touched by the films honesty. The ending is quite sad and unexpected, but isnt that what makes notable film?

I never forgot this film, nor how it effected me. This is a film that I wish I had taped when I first saw it in 88'.

A must see for lovers of the romatically bazzaar.

4 out of 5 stars Realistic depiction of Brazilian life.......2000-01-03

Having spent my "formative" years in Brazil, I have to say this movie tugs at my "coracao"(heart).I would LOVE to see more work (movies) from this talented director. I hope "Macabea" has finally attained her "felicidade" that was denied her for so long. Truely "um grande cultivar" (a great work)! Muito obrigado!

        4 out of 5 stars The Star.......1999-03-13

The movie is great for people who like to know about other cultures. Even though it can look and sound different there are a lot of things that touch your heart.
