Purgatory is a down-and-dirty Western with a twist The Twilight Zone's Rod Serling would have loved. A band of 19th-century desperadoes, led by the monstrous Blackjack Britton (Eric Roberts), takes a wrong turn while fleeing a posse and rides into an otherworldly, off-the-map town called Refuge. Sedate, almost repressed, and guarded by an unarmed sheriff (Sam Shepard), Refuge is a weird haven of hospitality with no jail, a literate shopkeeper (J.D. Souther), an erudite dandy of a doctor (Randy Quaid), a restless deputy (Donnie Wahlberg), and a beautiful young woman (Amelia Heinle) with no apparent family. In short order, Blackjack figures Refuge is his for the plundering. But the youngest of his gang, the innocent Sonny (Brad Rowe), slowly realizes the town's residents are, in fact, dead legends of the American West--Wild Bill Hickok (Shepard), Doc Holliday (Quaid), Jesse James (Souther), among others--spending a violence-free interim before being taken to Heaven (or Hell if they fail). A purely fun if slightly hokey piece of fanciful adventure, Purgatory's colorful cast plays the whole thing straight and gives this made-for-cable film (directed by Uli Edel of Last Exit to Brooklyn) some exciting, six-gun grit and emotional authenticity. --Tom Keogh
Description
Between somewhere and nowhere in the untamed West is the small town of Refuge. There, neither the sheriff nor his deputy carry a sidearm. There's no jail either, because shooting, carousing and bad blood are not in the town's character. What peaceful folks live there? Wild Bill Hickok. Doc Holliday. Jesse James. Billy the Kid. All long dead. All mysteriously given a chance to undo their violent pasts in Purgatory. All put to a stern test when Blackjack and his ornery gang ride into town.

Bad romantic comedies make you scoff at their absurdity; good ones make you wish your life was that absurd. Just Like Heaven is just smart and likable enough to trigger that wishing. David (Mark Ruffalo, Collateral, You Can Count On Me) finds an amazing apartment in San Francisco--only to discover it's haunted by the spirit of the previous tenant, an overachieving doctor named Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde, Election). There's something not quite right about Elizabeth's afterlife; against his better judgement, David agrees to help her investigate her life...but finds himself digging into his own as well. The plot takes a twist that some viewers will see coming, but Just Like Heaven doesn't rely on the surprise alone; the revelation takes the story in a new and just as entertaining direction. Witherspoon and Ruffalo are two of the best romantic leads around, but the surprise is how well their contrasting flavors (perky and moody, respectively) mesh, creating a sparky, engaging chemistry. Also featuring Dina Waters (Freaky Friday), Donal Logue (The Tao of Steve), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Crisply directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), who carefully keeps the supernatural from getting silly and the romance from getting gooey. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars All the elements of a great movie.......2007-05-10

I must admit that I was pleasently surprised at the quailty of this movie, which features all the elements that make up a great movie. Starting with an interesting story line, great acting and action sequences, and a number of special moments wonderfully esentuated with moving music.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie for TV.......2007-05-07

It would be hard for me to give this movie more than a three, since it is in the movie category and thus is competing with truly classic westerns such as, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. That being said, it is a good movie when you consider that it was made for TV. An entertaining western which has some great actors and an amusing plot. If I was to compare it to other TV movies, only, then I would say that it rated a strong 4.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the movie, " Purgatory.".......2007-03-23

Interesting movie with a bit of Romance.., of course, as in most westerns, the heroes. Wild Bill Hickock, Doc Holiday, Jesse James, and of course, Billy the Kid. And of course the villian, Black Jack...
Very good movie. I've watched it several times already.

Thanks!

this movie more then your average, shootem up western!really, this is a tale of redemption .well written, acted, and directed...I got flick as gift for my wife[she rated it 5 stars!]

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Fantasy Western.......2007-01-10

Often when genres combine in unexpected ways the result is less than stellar, but this is not the case with Purgatory. Combining all the drama and bravado of your typical western with a supernatural spin, Purgatory brings together many of the wild west's greatest heroes for one last hurrah. A beautifully imagined and produced piece of cinema highly reminicent of Deadlands: The Weird West, Purgatory is definately worth the price and should be added to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Now why had I never heard of this before? .......2006-05-15

This is such a fun movie! I loved it. The actors play it straight, real low-key (except for the Very Angry Brother) and smart. It's so well put together! Loads of grit and such a nicely done ending. So many movies just can't cut it to the end, they turn sour; but this one has a satisfying finish as well as a strong start. I'm so glad I got it.
I just can't understand why I never heard anything about it before I hunted up stuff Vince Ventresca was in. (Ok, so I've started watching movies with specific actors in them, which I swore I'd never do. Sue me. He's good.)

Oh, plot? um, Doctor gets chucked in jail for a few, gets out and doesn't want to go back to LA. Ends up in the little town of the title, Purgatory Flats. Gets caught up in the wake of a shooting... Thing is, you completely understand everyone in the movie, why they do what they do, all the bad decisions they make. It's all the sort of stuff that people do every day, how the little things just slide you right into disaster.

There's a little cheeze (chase scene anyone) - but everyone likes a little cheese, and they don't overdo it.

5 out of 5 stars NEXT STOP IS HELL.......2004-11-27

PURGATORY FLATS enters the "Body Heat" territory in this well-crafted, keenly directed femme fatale story. Vincent Ventresca plays Dr. Thomas Reed, a man whose life was cruelly changed when his wife is killed in a car accident in which he was driving drunk. He is sentenced to five years in prison and upon his release he refuses the help of his brother (Jason Brooks), and hitchhikes to a small town called Purgatory Flats. There he meets the seductively sexy Sunny (Alexandra Holden). She is married to a no-good drug addict named Owen who is wounded seriously in a drug deal gone bad. Dr. Tom comes on to the scene and tries to help save Owen. However, Owen's uncle Dean (Gregg Henry) doesn't want two time offender Owen to be put in jail, so he forces Tom to go with him to their house to nurse Owen back to health. There we meet Owen's older brother, Randy (Brian Austin Green), who is AWOL and a brutal redneck himself.
From here, Tom becomes more and more involved and ensuing mayhem, murder and deception run rampant.
A clever script and top notch performances make this sleeper a keeper. Ventresca is excellent as Tom, showing his guilt over the death of his wife, his ineffective attempt at celibacy, and his desperation in his situation. Holden sizzles as the young Mata Hari, combining a teen innocence with an older woman's cunning. Green (Knots Landing) is perfect as redneck Randy, and Gregg Henry gives a solid performance as the treacherous uncle.
PURGATORY FLATS moves along in a quiet ominous mood, and it's plot twist may be predictable, but it still has a punch.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Flick.......2004-02-28

After spending five years in prison, Dr. Thomas Reed, played by the incomparable Vincent Ventresca, exiles himself to Purgatory Flats and winds up tending bar. He soon meets the luscious, angel-faced Sunny (Alexandra Holden). "You are wicked." he tells her. "You have no idea." she replies as she sips her Slo Comfortable Screw and languidly drags on her cig. Reed finds himself entwined in the violent troubles of her family and the femme fatale story unfolds set against the desolation and desperation of the oil-drained western town.

Canny direction. Great performances. Superb entourage work. And some lust scenes that sizzle like the sun in Purgatory.

    Description

Written by and starring 14-year-old Celeste Davis, this groundbreaking feature offers an inside glimpse of how it truly feels to be a teen in today's world. PURGATORY HOUSE begins where most stories end, as it chronicles the after-life journey of Silver Strand: a lonely teen who abandons her life of turmoil and drug addiction, only to find herself caught somewhere between heaven and hell. There, she must choose whether she will accept her drab existence or finally discover within herself the power to change. Told darkly with fantastical elements, PURGATORY HOUSE also stars Jim Hanks (Baby Geniuses), and Johnny Pacar (Now You See It, TV's Flight 29 Down) and includes music by some of the recording industry's top artists. This powerful debut from director Cindy Baer is the winner of 8 Film Festival Awards and a 2-time PRISM Award Nominee.

Meet 14-year-old writer/actress Celeste Davis and director Cindy Baer in 2 extensive "behind the scenes" documentaries, and learn how this amazing project was created from start to finish. Also meet actors Jim Hanks, Johnny Pacar and Devin Witt, along with the rest of the cast and crew who came together to bring this movie to life.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2007-05-30

This film is an amazing accomplishment for someone of any age, --let alone a 14-year-old writer/first time actress. Both sets of stories; the making of the movie, and the movie itself, are compelling, unique, inventive, raw, honest and captivating. Oddly enough, the grassroots/low budget syle of the film actualy ehanced the storytelling. If the film had higher production values, it would have detracted from this amazing story. My favorate films are ones that inspire, inform and educate. This film did all of these things, and more. It made me see the world differently, and appreciate the life I have.

    1 out of 5 stars Purgartory House.......2007-05-14

I can appreciate the skill expressed in this film and it deserves the awards it has recieved as it is very creative when taking into consideration the age of the producer and writer however I threw the DVD out after the viewing and thought the story line was poor and nothing I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars "Only In Celebration Do We Go Beyond The Circle Of Life And Death" ~ Teenage Musings On Death And The Afterlife.......2007-02-12

The first thing you'll notice about this movie is that it views like a very low budget high school student film project. However this is not a film that should be judged by its production values or level of acting ability. When you discover that the script was written in its entirety by fourteen year old Celeste Davis (who bears a striking resemblance to ex-olympic figure skater Tonya Harding) who also stars in the lead role of recently departed suicide victim Silver Strand, you'll begin to realize what a remarkable achievement this movie truly is.

Synopsis: Silver departs this world to find herself in Purgatory House, kind of a halfway home for teenage suicides. Each occupant has their own room that is exactly like the one they left on earth, equipped with all the same belongings and wardrobe they left behind. Not only that, but they are also supplied with a limitless amount of the drugs of their choice. Who could ask for anything more?

However there are also hard lessons to be learned in Purgatory, one of the most difficult is mandatory viewing of earthTV via a large big screen television mounted on the wall of each bedroom. Here they are forced to observe the ongoing life on earth of family and friends in order to see and understand how their choice to end their own life has impacted others.

'Purgatory House' is a pleasant surprise containing some very inventive thoughts, considerations and situations. It also deals with a number of crucial problems facing todays teenagers; suicide, addiction, school violence and unwanted pregnancy. Imagine, all this from the mind of a fourteen year old.

P.S.: Don't forget to watch the two featurettes; 'The Making of Purgatory House' and 'Putting It All Together.' They go a long way in putting the project in perspective and definitely raise the film to a higher level. This movie should be required viewing in every high school in America.

    5 out of 5 stars "Eagle Films & Alpha New Cinema...The Despiser (2002) ~Philip Cook".......2006-08-29

Alpha New Cinema Video and Eagle Films present "THE DESPISER" (2003) (105 mins - Color)...On the razor's edge between life and death there is a place where a war is being waged for the future of your mortal soul...your enemies are fierce and your survival uncertain...you battle evil to save your soul, the battle for your soul has just begun, we're Gods trash men set to right the mess...this is taken from the opening of the trailer for "The Despiser", now the fun begins...Writer/director Cook creates a world that's vibrant cross between live action and stunning CG effects...experience the darkly magical landscape guaranteed to keep fantasy fans in ecstasy that only Cook can bring to the screen..

Under director Philip J. Cook who is also producer, writer, cinematographer, sound recorded by Mark Hyde, director of character animation and creature designed Cory Collins, special animation projects William Dempsey, computer engineering Geoffrey Cook, costume designer Helen Cook, additional costumes provided by The Costume Castle of Jim Henson, special makeup effects by Richard Dorton and Mark Redfield, film editor and art director, prop builder is Norman Gagnon, Walter Suarez is pyrotechnician, stunt coordinators Dan Poole and Richard Dorton...cast includes Mark Redfield .(Gordon Hauge), Doug Brown .(Carl Nimbus), Gage Sheridan .(Maggie Hauge), Frank Smith .(Fumie Tomasawa), Michael Weitz (Jake Tulley), Tara Bilkins (Charlie Roadtrap), Mike Diesel .(Norman (as Mike Cuccherini), Mark Hyde .(Last Shadowman and Jeff the Jumper), Andrew Bartlett .(Talking Ragman/Ragman), Enrique Castillo .(Ragman), Alexandra Cook .(Older Child on Highway), Helen Cook .(Nurse #2/Ragman), Philip J. Cook (Despiser/Troll (voice), Roxanne Cook (Younger Child on Highway), Greg Cooper (TrashBag Man), Richard Dorton (Shadowman #2), Norman Gagnon (Construction Worker/Laughing Ragman), Christopher Hahn (Scribner), Hain Laramore (Dr. Pollet), Brian Neary (Ben), Dan Poole (Shadowman #1), Jeff Rathner (Shadowman in Church), Barbara Sonnenblick (Mrs. Barkman) . . . . . Director Phil Cook's film "The Despiser" is a grand a cinematic production right up there with Hollywood, considering it's small budget turns out to be top notch...back to our story, when Gordon Hauge first enters Purgatory, shortly after his wife leaves him, he finds the video world both frightening and fascinating...the audience quickly falls into place as the nature of Purgatory for what it is and never knowing what comes up next, has a very unique look about it...even the characters go so far as to comment on the surreal nature of Purgatory...like everyone stuck in Purgatory, all they want is a way out, something everyone seems to think Gordon Hauge can give them, especially the Despiser....the lost souls of Purgatory have been divided into two camps, the good guys and the bad guys...the film works on two spheres of relationships, one of Gordon and his wife, plus Gordon and his spiritual comrades...director Cook keeps the action fast and nowhere is the dialogue boring or off the scale...the entire production has an excellent cast consisting of outstanding performances...must make mention, it received recognition for Best Picture and Best Director is Philip Cook from the Firelight Shocks Films Festival, also Best Special Effects (Feature) from Shriekfest...which is no small feat in this world of film making.

Special footnote, from Philip Cook who has written, directed, and/or photographed dozens of commercials, films, program opens, and on-air IDs for many clients. He holds a degree from the University of Maryland in film production and has won several awards, including a CLIO in 1983 for his work for MTV and an award for the rock video "Don't Answer Me" for The Alan Parsons Project. Producer, director, writer PHILIP COOK started out as a cinematographer for the animation company Broadcast Arts--whose great claim to fame was producing PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE. At twenty-four, Cook went on to write and direct his first feature, STAR QUEST, which aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. He then wrote and directed INVADER, which aired on HBO, Showtime and Cinemax. He has produced countless political campaign commercials and high end corporate image pieces for leading telecomm companies. He owns Eagle Films, a production and visual effect company. He is currently in pre production on the rousing prequel to DESPISER set in 4th century Britain...check additional comments from Philip Cook's Eagle Films website.

Another special footnote is the film is also nicely scored, with atmospheric electronic ambiance, although none is given credit...director Cook explains, "The music score is stock that I licensed from Firestorm," referring to one of several stock music licensing firms that provide library music to films like Cook's. "I went through their whole Hollywood Film Music library and culled the tracks that had the right mood and were stylistically similar. The ones I liked tended to be created by the same guy, Robert Walsh. Considering that DESPISER is basically wall-to-wall music, was the only economic solution."

Phil's experience as a story teller, tempered by his understanding of budgets and the need to put every production dollar on the screen allows him to provide his clients with creative coherency, maximized efficiency and top production value.

    BONUS FEATURES:
    1. Audio commentary with director Philip Cook
    2. "Making of Despiser" (interesting featurette)
    3. Bloopers & Mistakes
    4. Deleted Scenes
    5. Picture Gallery
    6. Trailer
    7. Animated Story Board to Film Comparison

The future of DESPISER doesn't stop with a single feature, as explained by Eagle Films creator Philip Cook. "The concept is very intriguing and could be pursued much further. It's a fascinating world that opens up numerous story opportunities. One possibility would be a miniseries. Each segment could explore a different level of purgatory, defined in many ways by the perspective of its inhabitants. And just think of the fascinating characters who could slip in from times past. Some might still have axes to grind, or others may be trying to make amends for the sins of their past life. It could dramatically and visually be quite captivating and original, an adventure with something to say about heroism, sacrifice, fanaticism and sin--all wrapped in wild visually exciting adventure with international appeal".

Great job by Alpha Video for releasing "THE DESPISER" (2003)...looking forward to more releases from director Philip Cook...order your copy now from Amazon or Alpha Video where there are plenty of copies available on DVD, stay tuned once again for another Alpha New Cinema entertainment video...closing credits, this film is dedicated to the memory of Constance Hubbard.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good "Bad" Movie.......2006-03-06

First off, you should not watch this movie by yourself. It will just bore you because you wont have anyone to disguss how disgustingly horrible this movie is with. On the other hand, this movie is so rediculous that it becomes insanely comedical. From beginning to end (although in the middle it tends to get a little boreing) this movie is incredibly hilarious in the so-bad-its-funny way. Amazingly ugly special effects, A plot that not even the cast understands, below average acting, and some absolutely classic lines. The 4 main characters all try to portray different races and fail misreably -- especially the "Japanese" actor. For one, he looks mexican, and two, since when does having a Japanese accent of broken english make you sound like a neanderthal? It is absolutely hilarious. If you have a taste for "bad" movies, I strongly encourage to watch this movie. Very, very, very funny.

    4 out of 5 stars Hysterical.......2006-01-12

If you enjoy this movie simply because of the story, acting, etc. you must be borderline retarded; but, if you appreciate the film for its comedic mastery than I applaud you. 'Despiser' is not a movie you watch alone (I tried that the first time and wound up angry because of how bad the movie was), this is the movie that you get all your friends together to watch and laugh about how bad it is. So far I have watched this movie 9 times and have found something new ever time. With this movie you will get some of the worst dialouge ever ("I'd like you to shed some light on a subject." "What?" "Dying."), an actress who's accent changes ever scene, an attempt to pass off a Hispanic actor as a kamikaze piolet (why do they let him drive so much?), and hands down the worst special effects ever to grace my screen at least. But again, the movie is absolutely hysterical. So I guess I would reccomend you buy this.

5 out of 5 stars very fun and inventive.......2005-05-19

Despiser gets a bad rap on this board for being so low budget, but if you watch the 'making of 'stuff on the DVD you realize that this is made by a guy who isn't connected to Hollywood geographically or otherwise ( Philip Cook). The actors are mostly friends and obviously aren't Hollywood types- I find that refreshing. While people complain about the extensive use of low-end CGI effects, I find the effects to be one of the elements that makes Despiser such a charming experience. The effects don't try to fool you, they serve the overall look and ingenuity of the production. Hollywood effects often cost millions of dollars and are created on extremely expensive workstations but usually don't fool you either so this makes the effects in Despiser feel more honest and artistic. .This film is a very large and ambitious vision pulled off for very VERY little money, with a decent video camera, home computers, and sets built from stuff purchased at the home depot. In spite of it's home-made feel I don't consider this to be amateur or naiive cinema because it actually consists of a well thought out story and production. I totally admire this films gusto and ingenuity. 9 out of 10 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Should have been called "Crapzilla".......2005-05-13

Geez, when is somebody going to enact a law to protect us from these crappy little film companies (you know who you are, shame on you!) from sneaking their little home movies into the video store. They must sneak into the video stores with trench coats, and instead of stealing movies, they put their own home-made, camcorder stinkers on the shelves. Then, the video store people just go ahead and enter them in the system, not knowing what crap they are. Movies like this make me want to blow up all of the digital camcorder factories and save the world.

I watched this movie on Showtime a few weeks ago. It is a really good movie. It is not what you expect. The cinemaography (I know I spelt that wrong..lol) is really good. I like the story line. I think this is Brian Austin Greenes first film that seperates him from anything he has ever done. The story line is good.

I know there will be people out there that may not like. Truly a matter of preference but I did enjoy it. I liked and I think if you are looking for something different. Give it a try.
