A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars So weird, eighties weird........2007-05-16

I bought this movie because it was inexpensive and, randomly, one of the lecturers in my bar exam review course mentioned it in his video lecture. He didn't know how to describe it, but claimed it reminded him of a some of the repo guys he'd met as a property lawyer. I don't really know how to describe it, either. It's sort of "Big Lebowski," but set in the eighties and with less drugs. The characters are all pretty messed up without drugs. It is surreal, and very random. You should give up on the plot and just enjoy the scenes as they come. The plot, such as it is, will work itself out. This is not a movie for people who need to understand things, who need everything to make sense. When I first watched it, I was strung out from studying for two months and didn't want to think any more. For me, it was perfect. Weird, ridiculous, and amusing. If you approach it with a similar attitude, I'll think you'll enjoy. :)

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Alex Cox's Best- Emilio Estevez's, too.......2007-04-19

This movie is truly amazing. It holds up to repeated viewing and I should know, because I've been watching it repeatedly since I bought it around ten years ago. You can just go on and on about the mountainous high points this film has, from Harry Dean Stanton, the western style camera work Alex Cox would later revisit in Straight to Hell, the crackpot philosophizing, the nonsensical alien conspiracy and ensuing government conspiracy, Rev. Larry, the cartoonish punk thugs, seedy Los Angeles, and some other little things like the dialogues ("I installed two ways mirrors in his place in Brentwood"), acting (everyone essentially "disappears into their character"- even the guy from Conan the Destroyer), and the plot.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy release of a CLASSIC.......2007-04-11

I'm not going to try to sell you on this movie, if you don't get why it's a classic, I can't be bothered to try to explain it to you. If you know and love this movie, this release is worth the price - it looks good, the commentary track is lots of fun.

4 out of 5 stars Irradiated.......2007-03-09

When I first saw this movie about 20 years ago I didn't know what to make of it. I was about thirty then. I still don't know, but I do know it has enough merit as a SciFi movie to deserve at least a rental. For someone to associate this as sexist, cruel, sadistic, unholy, or any other negative societal connotation is certainly understandable. It is probably those things because it was meant to be. I doubt saying Hannibal Lechter was a cannibal would surprise the author or director of "Silence of the Lambs". So trying to equate displays of anti-feminist, anti-christian, or anti-social behavior with intelligence is rather moot. The movie is what it is. You will love it or hate it probably. Imagine crossing "Reservoir Dogs" with "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" or "Raising Arizona" with "Snatch" and you begin to understand. You can't fit it in your genre specific box. So if you are open to sub-cultural wacky movies, you may be entertained.

1 out of 5 stars lobotomy.......2007-03-04

This is about the worst movie I've ever seen, and I've seen it twice (just to make sure).
Although I've seen it twice, I can't really tell you what it's about because it is too boring and idiotic to follow. But it was clearly made for people who think that juvenile behavior is "cool".

If you think that men who treat women in an insulting manner are "cool" (and there are a lot of you out there), then you might like this movie.
But if you are a thoughtful and intelligent person, this movie is a waste of time. You've been warned.

Five of the British film industry's best-loved comedies in one boxed set makes The Alec Guinness Collection absolutely essential for anyone who has any passion at all for movies. It contains Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), The Captain's Paradise (1953) (only available in this set), and The Ladykillers (1955). The Ealing Studio's greatest comedies captured the essence of post-war Britain, both in their evocation of a land once blighted by war but now rising doggedly and optimistically again from the ashes, and in their mordant yet graceful humor. They portray a country with an antiquated class system whose crumbling conventions are being undermined by a new spirit of individual opportunism. In the delightfully wicked Kind Hearts and Coronets, a serial killer politely murders his way into the peerage; in The Lavender Hill Mob a put-upon bank clerk schemes to rob his employers; The Man in the White Suit is a harshly satirical depiction of idealism crushed by the status quo; in The Captain's Paradise, a ferryboat captain complements his proper British wife with a fiery Spanish wife; while The Ladykillers mocks both the criminals and the authorities with its unlikely octogenarian heroine Mrs. "lop-sided" Wilberforce. Many factors contribute to these films' success--including fine music scores from composers such as Benjamin Frankel (Man in the White Suit), Malcolm Arnold (Captain's Paradise), and Tristram Cary (The Ladykillers); positively symphonic sound effects (White Suit); marvelously evocative locations (the environs of King's Cross in Ladykillers, for example); and writing that always displays Ealing's unique perspective on British social mores ("All the exuberance of Chaucer without, happily, any of the concomitant crudities of his period")--yet arguably their greatest asset is Alec Guinness, whose multifaceted performances are the keystone upon which Ealing built its biting, often macabre, yet always elegant comedy. --Mark Walker

No vulgarity, no nudity, just some of the cleverest stories with fine performances from all concerned.

The remakes never work. Hard to improve on perfection.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb........2006-07-13

The best British comedy and satire. No slapstick or foul language or artistic nudity. Just great acting and great stories. Comedy mysteries with twisty endings. Example: the very ending of "The Captain's Paradise"; you would never guess.

1 out of 5 stars bad news for Spanish viewers?.......2005-04-15

I know all these films and agree they are wonderful. But, is it possible that this edition have an audio track in French and no Spanish subtitles?

5 out of 5 stars Great films, great value.......2004-07-16

As other reviewers have noted, these superb comedies from the golden age of British cinema showcase Alec Guinness' considerable skills, proving him to be as great an actor in his own way as the late Marlon Brando. And as others have pointed out, the DVD transfers are incredibly good for British films of this vintage. I've never seen Man in the White Suit looking better. Please note that poor sound recording equipment was a particular problem for British filmmakers of this era, so the sound can occasionally seem muted. This is a problem with the source, not the transfer.

The extras are a little disappointing compared to other Anchor Bay releases. (Yes, their Guinness filmography is incomplete.) But the value of this collection can't be beat. It's one of the best buys out there, so do yourself a favor and pick up the whole collection before Anchor Bay lets it go out of print, as other British titles in their catalogue have done.

Random comments to address other reviews:

All the films are presented in their proper aspect ratios. The Ladykillers is the only widescreen film here. (All the others were filmed before 1952, hence before the days of widescreen.)

Captain's Paradise is NOT an Ealing Studios film; it was produced at London International (the same place that oversaw production of The Third Man, so its credentials are good).

In Britain, this collection was partnered with another collection of Ealing comedies (via another distributor). Since Anchor Bay has also released Ealing's horror anthology Dead of Night (also recommended), they may be persuaded to distribute those films too if this collection sells well. Those films (Whiskey Galore, Passport to Pimlico, etc.) are equally superb, so let's keep our fingers crossed!

    5 out of 5 stars A remarkable collection........2003-02-19

I am 24 years old so one would not expect me to be a huge fan of these "older" films. On the contrary I am not just a fan I love them. One of my bosses turned me on to them a few years ago and I was always a huge Peter Sellers fan (mostly for his Pink Panther series) but after picking up this collection I found it to be a wonderful addition to my film library. Yesterday during the blizzard I watched four of the five disks. I found Kind Hearts and Coronets to be not only an interesting story but also darkly satiical. Many scenes were so well crafted I could not help to laugh. Alec was remarkable in this film as he played 8 different characters. Quite a feat for that time and a role Mike Meyers would love. Ladykillers was the only film I had seen previous to buying this set and I must say that not only is it an outstanding caper film but the DVD transfer was superb. The image quality really has brightened up fromt he onld VHS I saw. This film also shows some of Sir Alec's truly great acting and was brutally histerical. Peter Sellers yelling at a parrot was funny to see considering he went on to many more scenes involving fowl later on in life. The Lavender Hill Mob was probably the most intriguing of the 4 I have seen. Another crime caper flick Sir Alec really starred and the story was very solid. Also there was a car chase scene in this film that was extremely well done considering the time. The last film I managed to watch was the Man in the White Suit. While this film shows Alec again at his best I found it to be a little weaker than the other three. It was funny at times and an interesting enough plot just not as good if watched in succesion with the others. The final film is the Captain's Paradise but I have yet to view that one and will not review it. All the films look great on DVD and if you are young (like me)and have never seen any of these films you are really missing out on some of the masterpieces of the film industry. The only collection I could possibly recomend more to anyone is the Peter Sellers set. Better yet, buy them both like I did.

Director Gregory La Cava deftly balances satire, romance, and social comment in this 1936 classic, which echoes Frank Capra in its Depression-era subtext. The Bullocks are a well-heeled, harebrained Manhattan family genetically engineered for screwball collisions: father Alexander (Eugene Pallette, of the foghorn voice and thick-knit eyebrows) is the breadwinner at wit's end, thanks to his spoiled daughters, the sultry Cornelia (Gail Patrick) and the sweet but scatterbrained Irene (a luminous Carole Lombard), his dizzy and doting wife, Angelica (Alice Brady), and her "protégé," Italian freeloader Carlo (Mischa Auer). When Irene wins a society scavenger hunt (and atypically trumps her scheming sister) by producing a "lost man," a seeming tramp named Godfrey (William Powell), all their lives are transformed. With the always suave, effortlessly funny Powell in the title role, this mystery man provides the film's conscience and its model of decency; the giddy, passionate Lombard holds out its model for triumphant love. In a movie riddled with memorable comic highlights, the real miracle is the unapologetic romanticism that prevails. --Sam Sutherland

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Classic Comedy.......2007-07-03

I loved this movie. I really enjoyed watching William Powell. He was such a great actor. Even as a bum living in the dump pile he was still humorous and sophisticated, and kind of sexy. I felt that Powell and Gail Patrick were the greatest actors in the movie, although everyone else also did very well, especially Lombard as the scatterbrain love-sick young lady. I would love to watch this movie over and over again. I wish Hollywood still made movies like this.

    5 out of 5 stars Vintage Movie.......2007-04-02

My wife, Dee was the one instrumental in me purchasing & throughly enjoying this classic. She had seen it numerous times on afternoon TV movies when she was a little girl growing up in the 50's. William Powell & Carol Lombard were incredible together. The father & mother of Carol Lombard in the movie were equally amusing. I was pleaseantly surprised to find Lomard as a rather good comedian. Dick Powell, whom I faintly remember from the Thin Man movie series, was convincing as a rich man who hit rock bottom & became a street person. This 30's movie has struck an interest in me for more Dick Powell & Carol Lombard movies.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Classic.......2007-03-30

Why can't they make movies like this anymore. Funny, heartwarming, entertaining.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-03-11

I first got hooked on William Powell from watching the Thin Man Movies. His acting style and personality fit the "rich man posting as a butler" genre perfectly. His mannerisms, and speech would fit either role in life. Carol Lombard to me always seemed like a breath of fresh air. Eugene Pallette adds a little humerous touch to every role he plays. The entire cast play their roles perfectly, and make for some humerous as well as warm moments. I first saw this movie on a DVD I purchased in a "thrift bin" in a retail store. It was fuzzy and had the usual spots that most old movies have. Even so, it became one of my favorites. When it was released in a colorized version, and had been "cleaned up" and enhanced, I jumped at the chance to own it. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who a William Powell or Carol Lombard fan. And if they are not fans, they should be after watching this movie.

4 out of 5 stars All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people........2007-03-11

The below-stairs people usually got ignored in old movies. But there's a very interesting twist in "My Man Godfrey," a fun screwball comedy about a rich little girl who adores her secretive homeless-turned-butler. The dialogue is snappy, the storyline is fun, but the relationship between the two leads is never quite convincing.

The list for a charity scavenger hunt includes "lost man." Scatterbrained Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) is about to lose to her nasty sister, until "lost man" Godfrey (William Powell) volunteers to help her. As a reward, Irene makes Godfrey the new butler for her moneyed Park Avenue family, who turns out to be kind of crazy -- a long-suffering dad, cruel sister, and a mom who sees gnomes.

And it soon becomes clear that Irene has a massive crush on Godfrey, but not only does he reject her, but he keeps his past a secret. And her spiteful sister Cornelia (Gail Patrick) is planning to get back at Godfrey for humiliating her, by framing him for a theft...

Basically "My Man Godfrey" is just a cute little upper-crust storyline of the type that was popular in the 1930s, so people could ignore their Depression troubles for a few hours. And it succeeds at being a solid little comedy -- not quite screwball but occasionally verging on it.

For the first half, we're basically treated to the wacky antics of Irene's family (including a horse in the study), and Godfrey's mild disbelief at what a bunch of weirdos they are. And after that it gets more serious, with Cornelia's war on Godfrey, but the kooky comedy is kept up through witty dialogue and warped family encounters. ("Take a look at the dizzy old gal with the goat." "I've had to look at her for 20 years - that's MRS. Bullock!" "I'm terribly sorry!" "How do you think I feel?").

The only real problem is Godfrey and Irene. They make a cute couple, and ex-hubby-and-wife Powell and Lombard have some nice chemistry. Unfortunately the ending seems very contrived, since Godfrey never gives even the slightest indication that he even really likes Irene, let alone loves her. Not a word, not a gesture.

But taken apart, they do a brilliant job -- Lombard pouts, bubbles, cries and generally flakes around as the scatterbrained Irene, who doesn't recognize Godfrey after he shaves off "those nice whiskers." And Powell has his usual wry, brainy charm, but with a slightly sarcastic edge. Eugene Pallette and Alice Brady are also fun as Irene's longsuffering dad and flaky mom.

"My Man Godfrey" is a classic little comedy of flaky socialites and secretive butlers -- just on this side of screwball. Charming and quirky.

Ealing comedy--cozy, gentle, and whimsical, right? In this case, think again. Alexander Mackendrick was always the most politically aware of the Ealing directors, and in The Man in the White Suit (1952) he takes the studio's favorite theme of the little man up against the system and gives it a sharp satirical twist. Sidney Stratton (Alec Guinness at his most unworldly), a maverick scientist working in a textile mill, invents a fabric that never gets dirty and never wears out. He's hailed as a genius--until management and unions alike realize what his brainwave implies. Mackendrick's humor is exact and pointed, and the satire turns savage as a lynch mob of bosses and workers hunt Sidney down through dark, narrow streets. Mackendrick's disenchanted view of class-ridden British society still rings horribly true, and he draws note-perfect performances from the cream of British character actors: Cecil Parker as the liberal mill owner (based, it's said, on Ealing boss Michael Balcon); Ernest Thesiger as the evil old godfather of the industry; and, wittily sensual as Sidney's confidante, the ever-wonderful Joan Greenwood. Plus, listen out for the "voice" of Sidney's bizarre apparatus, the funniest and most unforgettable sound effect ever devised. --Philip Kemp

    Product Description

Sir Alec Guinness delivers one of his most beloved performances as Sidney Stratton, an eccentric chemist who one day invents a fiber that never wrinkles, wears out or gets dirty. But when the mill owners and workers both realize that this miracle fabric will destroy their industry, Sidney suddenly becomes the most hunted man in the nation. Can a young idealist trapped between big business and mad unions find safety in science or will the future of Britain become unraveled by one extraordinary white suit? Directed by Alexander Mackendrick (THE LADYKILLERS, SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS), THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT received an Oscar ® nomination for Best Screenplay and is considered by fans and critics alike as the definitive Guinness/Ealing comedy. THE ALEC GUINNESS COLLECTION presents this screen legend's classic comedies including KIND HEARTS & CORONETS, THE LAVENDER HILL MOB, THE LADYKILLERS and THE CAPTAIN'S PARADISE, all still considered to be among the greatest movie comedies ever made. Includes a 4-Page Collector's Booklet

5 out of 5 stars The Man in the White Suit.......2007-06-26

One of the snappier satires to emerge from Britain's Ealing Studios in the 1950s, Mackendrick's wry, wonderful "White Suit" is built around the expressive comic performance of Guinness, playing a dreamy, obsessive chemist without the means (or the elite credentials) to fund his pet project. Greenwood, always a fine mix of dotty and genteel, is a lovely, airy presence as Sidney's champion, and the cast of eccentric Ealing character actors (like wheezing elder Ernest Thesiger) is top notch as well. Mackendrick slyly incorporates a bit of political commentary into this seemingly frivolous farce, poking fun at the machinations of industrial tycoons and union activists alike. Buoyant and funny, this "White Suit" wears exceedingly well.

4 out of 5 stars Capital and Labor are together on this one. .......2006-12-20

This is a fantastic, allegorical Ealing Studios "comedy." I put quotes on comedy because to me this is more of a dramatic film or maybe an ironic comedy, one particularly suspenseful at times.
Alec Guiness is terrific as usual as Sidney Stratton, a rogue scientist who goes from research lab to research lab at local textile mills, building and testing his experiments until he gets found out and fired. Eventually, after a great scene-one of several-in which Stratton's passion and determination prove both volatile and destructive, not to mention frightening (to the genteel prim English manner), he is given a chance.
Though not immediately successful, his chemistry proves exactly what he desired, a fabric that repels water and dirt, and will never wear down. Though it does illuminate at night, a nuclear allusion that elevates the allegorical nature of the film. To read into this a picture of a unconscionable maverick works, especially considering this was made just six years after Horoshima and Nagasaki.
But in this day and age I also sympathized with Stratton's determination to revolutionize. Representing progress his invention is a threat to the status quo, and the elite, whose authority partly rests upon the assumption of a demand for what they produce. But not only does capital fear him, labor worries for their own existence. A fabric that never breaks down means no jobs.
This dynamic is present today in myriad forms. Whether in our own class system, or industry, progress is begrudged even while it is celebrated. A reformation of paraigm means instability. But would we have more electric/alternative fuel cars, greater solar and wind generation, or more advanced medicines if those who rule such fields didn't seek to maintain their own status as much as they support progress?
A rogue throughout, Sidney Stratton is so myopic to his work that it's effects never exist to him. Such tenacity and fire makes for brilliance as well as destruction. Rock musicians who burn bright but flame out early come to mind. The way of the world must be progress, but progress with a conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy, with a very contemporary conundrum embedded.......2005-12-20

Alec Guiness plays a brilliant and idealistic, albeit rogue, chemist, who dreams of, and strives to, create the ultimate fabric, that will be indestructible and unsoilable. He keeps getting jobs in research departments at textile mills, and conducts his experiments in little niches or side-rooms, always moving toward perfecting that perfect fabric. Havoc ensues when he succeeds, as everyone panics over what this synthetic fabric will do to the textile industry. Guiness never considered that aspect, and struggles to grasp the implications and ramifications, as weighed against attaining his dream.

I will give away no more of the plot. Guiness is excellent, and everyone plays their parts very well. The question raised by this film is an intriguing one. What would happen to commerce if the perfect fabric were to be invented? Or a car that doesn't wear out? If healthcare could cure everything? Is there a lot of planned obsolscence in our world, to protect jobs and incomes and free enterprise and capitalism? Hmmmm.

A very enjoyable film, with a thought-provoking aspect.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ealing black comedy on industry & technology.......2005-11-27

Yet another madcap Ealing comedy starring Alec Guinness as a scientist who invents a fabric that won't soil or wear out. Realizing that such a fabric would spell ruin for the whole textile industry, the company wants Guinness to sign over the invention to them so they can suppress it. He, of course, wants it known to the whole world: it's his ticket to fame.

Quite a tug-of-war develops between Guinness and the government henchmen involving chases, bribery, kidnapping, and other lunacies. But it all comes to naught when the lasting qualities of the fabric prove to be defective. Guinness is wonderful and the script is taut and hilarious. It's a neat little black comedy on industrialism vs. the entrepeneur. From that devilish smile on Guinness's face at the end, it looks like the battle goes on. Terrific fun; definitely worth a watch.

    5 out of 5 stars Add-on to review below.......2005-09-19

Just a note--I can't find as anyone's caught this. The soundtrack for this film is by Benjamin Frankel, a serious British composer whose symphonies are highly regarded, and is one of the best film scores Ive encountered in some time. In fact I'm surprised it isn't better known as it approaches the quality Sir William Walton reached in his Shakespeare scores for Olivier. I'd buy this DVD just for the music.

Otherwise this is an absolutely wonderful flick and, as an exercise in humorous cynicism about how the modern world operates I'd double-bill it with Wilder's absurdly under-rated "One, Two, Three."

5 out of 5 stars The Death-Defying Fall of Mr. B.......2006-12-06

There's a film out there that combines teen themes with the white-knuckle adventure of a life-and-death struggle in the wilderness, that augments great acting with a brilliant script and top-notch production values. "White Wolves - Cry in the Wild II" is not that film. Instead, it's a poorly assembled movie that is most notable for its baffling scenes and characterizations - some that will make you scratch your head and others that will make you burst out laughing.

White Wolves starts innocently enough, with a crew of rowdy teens embarking on a camping trip with woodsman and role model Mr. B (Matt McCoy) as their guide. But after some mountaintop horseplay goes awry, Mr. B falls approximately twenty thousand feet to the ground below, crashing through trees and caroming off of boulders on his way down -- and somehow survives. Believe me when I say that this is easily the funniest plummet I have seen in a film since Sly lost his grip on that girl in "Cliffhanger".

The teens have to rescue Mr. B, and each has his or her own style, which leads to frequent clashes. Scott (Zach Morris) is an authoritarian thug who almost murders dweeby Adam (David Moscow) in a rage. Cara (Amy Dolenz) is distraught when Mr. B's accident seriously cuts into her flirting schedule. Benny (Marc Riffon) is a malcontent delinquent who can hardly function without his father figure. And Pandra (Amy O'Neill) is the weirdest one of all, as demonstrated by a "romantic" scene in which she and Adam confess their attraction to each other. It's quite possibly one of the strangest moments of teen love ever captured on film.

Just when you think this movie can't get any more weirdly, bizarrely entertaining, with ghostly white wolves appearing and disappearing and Mark-Paul Gosselaar ranting and raving, the kids get attacked by a BEAR!! You need to watch this scene in slow motion, which is where its fakeness and sheer absurdity really shines through.

"White Wolves - Cry in the Wild II" is so bad it's good, and by that I mean it's awesome.

4 out of 5 stars This is not great cinema but a good story.......2002-11-27

Over all I would recommend A Cry in the Wild 2 for family viewing. While there are a lot of holes in the story, it has an 80's feel with the clothing and hair styles (offputting to preteens and teenagers) and some lame special effects it does have some wonderful scenery, good storyline and a strong message about taking on responsiblity and challenges. There is a brief reference to a plane crash that leads one to believe this is a sequel to Hatchet (or A Cry in the Wild 1 based on Hatchet). Kid's who have read Hatchet will enjoy that connection.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the classroom!!.......2001-03-31

I am a 5th grade teacher, and my children loved this movie. We watched it to go along with the book Hatchet. It is very interesting and has nothing that any parents will object to having their kids watch.

    1 out of 5 stars rubbish!.......2000-07-21

this was the worst dvd ever created maybe if there were a few more explosions and car chases it would have been better but this was just plain bad. This and snake eyes were the only dvds i ever fell asleep in the middle of. People who buy this should have their heads checked.

3 out of 5 stars Reyes & Berkley My Cup Of Tea.......2002-04-15

Wild Wolves 11 is the latest addition ...to my ever- growing DVD collection. The storyline is above average & we getplenty of natural scenery & nature mixed in. But if you checkedout my review of The Ultimate Fight, you know I'm more into Er-nie Reyes's muscles than anything else & in WOLVES he doesn't disappoint. There's one memorable 'shirtless scene' & as usualit's a joy watchin' this 'gorgeous dude' flex up a storm. He's chosen a 'bulky, beefed-up' look for this flick. That's right-club-like arms & a thick upper chest for starters. And let's notforget the added bonus here of Elizabeth Berkley. Elizabethprovides us plenty of low-cut cleavage shots. A 'real tease'here, she obviously realized nudity down the road would be her saving grace. And remember guys & gals your ZOOM featureallows you freedom to explore everything 'upfront & personal'I say GO FOR IT!

3 out of 5 stars Simmone Jade MacKinnon ... Nuff said. .......2005-10-02

B Movies are meant to be "guilty pleasure" movies ... watched to satisfy those urges, instincts and desires that we're not always ready to admit to openly in public. Featuring various combinations of babe lust, wonton carnage, savage (or not so savage) brutality, far out locations, techno-junky-ism, monsters, weapon fetishes, space ships, mutants, armored vehicles and more babe lust, they come in Horror, Monster, Sci-Fi, Girly and many other sub-varieties. My reviews of such movies take this intentional "guilty pleasure" aspect into account and are written for people who enjoy either watching or making fun of this sort of entertainment at least some of the time. If you're looking for more than this from a B-movie ... (though it does happen occassionally), then you're not as smart as you think you are.

THIS movie probably wouldn't have held my attention for very long if it was just another "scary" shark movie, as my personal monster preferences don't focus on sharks. But Simmone MacKinnon is one of my all time favorite busty, Australian red heads. YEOUCH! Plot, script, production values ... who cares. If SJM is on screen (wearing bikini's and snug outfits that are more often wet than not) ... I'm game. Shallow, predictable, libidinous ... you bet. Life doesn't always have to be deep and thoughtful ... sometimes it can just be an experience of guilty pleasure. If you don't get that sort of thing ... well ... then WHY on EARTH were you watching THIS movie? : )

5 out of 5 stars Personally, onr of my favorite shark movies!.......2005-09-07

Some people might think that this is another stupid B-Movie with a ton of corny lines, crappy SFX, and a lame plot, but this was different.
This movie has the best SFX for a B-Movie I have ever seen, and the sharks looked amazingly real, and the story well done. Hopefully, a lot of people see this show, because they deserve a taste of what low budget movies can be.
    Five stars.

    3 out of 5 stars Expectations Met.......2005-06-21

I wasn't planning on seeing an earth-shattering motion picture when I turned on "Dark Waters." In fact, I was expecting to become bored about half-way through this flick. Surprising to me, "Dark Waters" is actually a very good movie that suffers only from a lack of production funds and a modest script. In short, it's a well above-average B-flick that is sure to satisfy even the stingiest and hard-nosed critic if they accept it for what it is.

It held my attention for its duration. It doesn't get too completely outlandish, so far as the limits of a good B-flick are concerned. Lorenzo Lamas is solid as the dashing hero of the film, and his supporting cast does well. The sharks in this film aren't really the focus. In fact, they are only around for brief flashes in the film, most notably when the trio of heroes dive into the realm of the sharks to escape their captors. It's one of the most tense moments in the movie.

If you're looking for a good film that doesn't quite measure up to movies like "Deep Blue Sea" and "Jaws," but is somewhat more entertaining than flicks like "Project Viper" and "Sabretooth," I'm sure "Dark Waters" will suffice.

Recommended to fans of SciFi Channel movies that are above average when compared to most SciFi pictures.

    4 out of 5 stars Grade A Cheese!.......2004-04-20

Others have compared this film to Deep Blue Sea. That is slightly true in that there are several smart (well, trained, at least) sharks in this movie. But it also borrows heavily from Shark Hunter (under water installation destroyed by sharks, down-on-luck scientist has super research sub, people smoke in rarefied environments, etc.).

In this movie we have a young scientist who is raising fake funds for an Atlantis mission, worries that he didn't sell enough books to cover the cost of the press conference, but owns a billion-dollar sub. After being taken in by some seductive decoys, he is convinced to look into the destruction of an undersea base (located under a drilling platform). The investigation takes his sub to its depth limit. Enter coordinated shark attack.

Soon, ala James Bond, said scientist finds himself aboard a secret sub where they have been developing the attack sharks for the past 20 years. He and his sidekick (a brainy, busty, oceanographer) baffle the crew with bluster before having to run for their lives. Eventually we get to a cheesy ending involving reunited families, amazing discoveries, and credibility thrown out the window.

There are some odd bits to this film. One is the offshore drilling platform. At what should be where the shaft meets the seabed, there is an installation that looks like an underwater city (mistake or unexplained secret base? My guess is the film makers didn't know anything about offshore drilling). There is also the shark tank. It is in the floor of the research lab with open water. It also extends up in front of the lab so than an impressive window can be opened into it. I shudder to think of the air pressure required to pull off this feat.

Still, there are some nifty shark attacks, a dead whale, cool subs, one of the stupidest rescues ever (it involves a raft and you have to see it to believe it), evil military, atoning scientists, a brainy busty oceanographer, and an amazing discovery. Grade A cheese!

    2 out of 5 stars Awful movie...sexy girl.......2004-03-04

Well, what can I say. This movie pretty much stinks. Suffice it to say that the main characters become mass murderers during the course of this thing, murderers of a whole lot of innocent people. But as is so typical of these "check your IQ at the door" type of films, the dead were all members of the military, so apparently the writers didn't see any reason why anyone should care. Oh, your average audience member who's smart enough to tie their own shoes might notice, but the makers of the film didn't. That's just a bit too deep and intellectual for them.

However, if you like looking at a pretty girl in a black bra and a skin-tight T-shirt getting squirted with water, diving into water, and generally running around while very wet, well, this movie does deliver that. She even takes her T-shirt off at the end, but it's too dark to really see anything. I suppose you could try turning up the brightness on your set.

    And that's about it.
