Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Titanic flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister. Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous Asian films (such as Eat Drink Man Woman). Thompson's script won an Oscar, and 1995 was a fine year for Jane Austen all around: Persuasion was made into an excellent picture, and Emma became the spritzy high school comedy Clueless. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Darcy has got nothing on Edward Ferrars..........2007-07-03

Yes, yes, if you are an Austen fan Mr. Darcy is dashing and bold to be sure, but the quiet gentleness and honorable love of Edward Ferrars for Elinor Dashwood is a delight to partake in, in this adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility." This film was quite faithful to the book, and the actors and actresses were suberbly chosen, as were the costumes, setting, and dialogue. It's such a lovely story with very good lessons to take to heart, as Emma Thompson (Elinor Dashwood) learns to hope that what is lost, is not lost forever, and Kate Winslet (Marianne Dashwood) learns how sensibility can prevent a broken heart. So, if you are craving the delightful romance, agony, humour, and hope of love in Jane Austen's England, this film will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Jane Austen.......2007-06-30

Anyone watching this show can determine how hard it was for a woman to survive in the pre-industrial England.

I have a preference for 19th century movies and books. This movie did not disappoint me. The actors and actresses all fit so perfectly into their roles. It was like magic to see them perform.

The Dashwood women, Elinor, Marianne and Margaret with along with their mother are forced to leave a life of luxury when Mr. Dashwood dies and they move into a cottage in the country. (Women have no rights to inherit when a man dies.) The money usually is given to the eldest sons in the family. The women must find another means to survive unless the one who inherits is generous enough to allow them to stay on. In this case, the greed of the son's wife overrules the son and the women are pressed upon to leave very quickly.

The oldest daughter develops a romantic interest in her half brother's wife's brother-in-law, but the sister-in-law makes certain that they are separated so that nothing more can develop.

The younger of the two oldest daughters abandons sensible conduct and rushes headlong into folly with a rake.

The two sisters are then taken into London for a season, and the truth is known about both men on their lives. One is already secretly engaged (entrapped is more like it)and the other has proposed to a wealthy woman because of his own bad debts.

Everything works out for the best and everyone gets what they deserve in the end. Life doesn't always look like it works that way, but it probably does. At least this movie inspires me to believe it.

The music in it is outstanding along with all of the beautiful panoramic scenery of England's countryside.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-07-06

I love it I love it I love it! No movie collection is complete without sleepless in seattle!! I have seen it 2 million 40 thousand times and it never gets old. The controversy and persistance of magic, love, fate and the chemistry and amazing acting of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is timeless and unrelenting even as the movie ages. It's a definate classic I do Not regret buying. you will love it! =]

5 out of 5 stars What is last line spoken by Meg Ryan?.......2007-07-01

Also one of my favorite movies. This classic is shown at least once a month on one or another of my cable channels. I am particularly impressed with the way the music moves the story along as it reaches its conclusion. I'm still trying to get the last line--spoken by Meg Ryan just before the elevator doors close and the credits begin. Can anyone tell me what she says to Sam and/or Jonah. Thank you for your assistance. Mary McCue

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-06-16

This is a classic film, full of romance and yet the 2 main characters are almost never together...great job!

4 out of 5 stars What I think about Sleepless in Seattle.......2007-05-18

This was supposedly a little known film that made a big impact on me and the general product. Anthing with Tom Hanks is usally a good bet it's going to be good, plus add in Meg Ryan and it's going to be a winner. I realy enjoyed this movie

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good Movie!.......2007-03-18

This is such a feel good movie. It makes you believe in "Love At First Sight" or Love at first touch. This is a movie I watch over and over again. When I am sad and want to be lifted up. When I want to believe in love. There is a line in the movie that goes something like this, "it was like coming home, but not to any home I have ever know before". That's what you want to believe love is, like coming home.

5 out of 5 stars A literate look at an eventual subject.......2007-07-04

I have been captivated by this movie for many years now so the "HD DVD" purchase was just a foregone conclusion. With each viewing I'm totally moved by each actor (even you Quince;) and enthralled that this 3 hour marathon feels shorter than many 2 hour action flicks (like the new Die Hard). Brad Pitt surpasses anything I could have hoped for in the role of Death and this is one of the few times ever in the history of cinema I have seen Anthony Hopkins equaled in a film (but not bested:). The movie 5/5

Sadly, there are (again) no special features that weren't already on the standard def version, in fact the extra's here ARE in standard def which to me is like a slap, with a twenty and a fiver. However since we are dealing with a movie already clocking in at the 3 hour window I can overlook it. The extras 3/5

In closing, the tears are real, the performances are jarringly raw and all this is only heightened by one of the better looking HD DVD releases. Yes, all that glitters is not high definition gold.. or Blu, but in this case an upgrade is not only worth your money it's worth your Kleenex as well. Stock up. The conclusion 5/5

Sex and Lucia engages mind and body with its time-bending narrative and images of beautiful Spaniards having vibrant sex. The story shifts between past and present, fact and fiction, so a plot summary won't capture it, but… A young writer named Lorenzo falls into a passionate relationship with a waitress named Lucía. But he also finds himself drawn to a young nanny taking care of a child who just might be the result of an anonymous fling Lorenzo had with a woman he met on an island the year before. Lorenzo fantasizes about the lives of all of these women until a horrific event sends him into a suicidal depression. This may sound obscure or flat, but Sex and Lucía unfolds clearly and beautifully, featuring stunning visual images of both nature and flesh, and weaving a poetic spell much like the director's previous film, The Lovers of the Arctic Circle. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-13

It definately kept your interest. Mainly because it was hard to follow and the story is so strange that you just had to see what was happening next.

4 out of 5 stars Eroticatic-.......2007-01-10

A very romanic and very erotic movie. Paz Vega is one of the most beauitful actress to come along in years, and has moved into the mainstream of movie making. The story is a wondrous love story. I would recommend it for adults.

5 out of 5 stars What is all about beyond intimacy?.......2006-07-19

This dramatic movie exposes many sex activities. Beyond all that, what is the message to send for the viewer? "Do you want to have wild sex with strangers?" Or "do you want to have intimacy sex with your lover?" With all the sex enjoyment, love and "blood" relationship is the final count after all. This is the destiny but not up to our choice. This is why Lorenzo falls into suicidal depression. This is why Lorenzo bursts into sorry tears to Comandrona. This is why Lucia rejects Tony's sex even there is a strong indication of sex enjoyment. Are these sex activities necessary? Let's look at it in different way. Can the movie have same visionary and emotional impacts without sex scenes? The answer is clear. Overall I enjoy this move very much, even have a shock for many days.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-07-05

In a word this movie was disappointing. It's supposed to be about beautiful Spaniards having sex on a magnificent Mediterranean island. Well there wasn't that much sex and the photography was nothing special. Add that to a plodding pace and poor plot and you don't get a very good film

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!! .......2006-07-02

"Put a lot of sex in it; that's always nice," Lorenzo (protagonist of this film) is advised about his novel-in-progress. "Sex and Lucia," which contains stories within stories within stories, unpacks this claim, showing that sex is not always "nice," but that like narrative it can be liberating and transformative.

Tragedy and betrayal lie at this film's heart, but because its story bends and twists around as it follows Lorenzo's false starts and revelations as a writer (it has, as it explains, a hole at the center which the audience, like the characters, can fall through) it also offers a way out -- a way to distinguish voyeurism and pornography from love and art, a way to stay faithful to a vision of human trust and imagination.

Brilliantly accomplished, "Sex and Lucia" displays the loveliness and ample talent of its stars, especially the beautiful Paz Vega (as Lucia) and Tristan Ulloa (as Lorenzo). A tremdous film!

Product Description

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. s classic novel comes to life in this haunting and darkly humorous film from acclaimed director George Roy Hill.Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks) is an ordinary World War II soldier with one major exception: he has mysteriously become unstuck in time. Billy goes on an uncontrollable trip back and forth from his birth in New York to life on a distant planet and back again to the horrors of the 1945 fire-bombing of Dresden. This dazzling and thought-provoking drama co-stars Ron Leibman and Valerie Perrine.

Billy Pilgrim (Michael Sacks) has a problem with time: he keeps jumping about in his own life, principally between three key scenes. The "present" is a kind of glowing suburban bliss involving a dutiful wife, large house, and presidency of the local Lions; the "past" is being a prisoner of World War II and experiencing the firebombing of Dresden from the wrong side; the "future" takes place in a glass dome on the planet Tralfamadore, to which Billy has been mysteriously spirited along with the woman of his fantasies (Montana Wildhack, played by Valerie Perrine). It isn't meant to make too much sense, since the point is to represent a man (and a century) that has witnessed things too unbearable for a wholly sane person to make sense of. In fact author Kurt Vonnegut's anguished cry on the insanity of war is one of those completely unfilmable books, so director George Roy Hill gets points even for trying. The whole package is thought provoking in a wholly Vonnegutian way. All this, and Glenn Gould playing Bach as well. --Richard Farr

3 out of 5 stars Adequate...Only Supplemental to the Book.......2007-05-31

Slaughterhouse 5 is not unflimable. Nothing is but just because you can doesn't mean you should. The film translation of Vonnegut's masterpiece is nothing special but certainly no embarrassment. Saying a movie is not awful is hardly an endorsement. Leaves alot of the book out, which is understandable. Changes alot of the book and makes basically the same points, which is not understandable. Why not just leave it as is? Competently acted and cleverly directed in an early 70's low budget minimalist sorta way. The book has a certain snap to it that the movie fails to duplicate.

5 out of 5 stars We will miss Kurt, but His Legacy Still Remains.......2007-05-14

Having heard of his passing this title came up on one of his numerous eulogies. I remebered it like it was yesterday, (it was) as one of my favorites that I only had on a very dusty VHS recording. No longer having a VCR, natural progression dictated an upgrade to Digital media and with it an addition to "my library", not the house library which covers a-z in themes and ideologies. It now joins the other greats I have amassed as a cornerstone piece. I will be adding other classics also but this will continue to be a favorite.
The story is clever and actually touches on several truisims, as we get older we tend to "time Travel" thru our memeries. A touch, a sound, a smell, sets us all on a journey back through our lives, not that we can ammend them as with the main character, but to re-live them through our memories time and time again.
Thanks Kurt, You will be missed,

    Rikk Olson

A very good movie if you enjoy history and sci-fi. Don't go for a snack during the movie or will will lose the plot.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure magic.......2007-02-16

I had first seen this film back in the early 70's and I ordered it immediately when I saw it was available on DVD.

The magic and the thrill is still here after three decades. Either me or the film did not grow old. Between you and me I grew, the film didn't. Still as fresh and rewarding as ever. Strongly recommended.

... or were certain scenes edited from this DVD version just like Paramount did with "Thief Of Hearts"? I could have sworn the rape scene was originally longer and more graphic.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Drama.......2007-03-09

The rape scene at the beginning is very graphic but is essential to the story about Charles Bronson's character becoming a vigilante. We have to know why he is so frustrated into taking matters in his own hands. It is interesting to see how the police chief breaks the case and how he handles it in the end.

    5 out of 5 stars Replacement.......2007-03-09

4 out of 5 stars A product of its time.......2007-02-16

A lot has been said,HERE,in various reviews, about how this film reflects the time in which it was made..while true on many levels, few have ventured to guess why such a film may have mirrored its time so well..Paul Kersey, the Bronson charecter, the vigilante, was portrayed as a fortyish fellow which,in 1974,would have given him a birthdate before the second world war..Now while world history may have been in turmoil during the '30s,the '40s,and even into the '50s,local history, the history of american neighborhoods and communities, lumbered along pretty much as it always had...most people more or less trusted most of thier neighbors, doors were not always double-bolted,violence was from gangsters or as a result of some flare-up between friends or relatives...it was not random,it was not gratious..
The perpetrators in"Death Wish",dope addicts, muggers, random sadists, belong to a later generation, twenty or so years younger than Kersey..thier world is a world fueled by drugs,by freedoms without responsibility, and they inhabit a world that was rapidly turning to manure..laws had no teeth...communities were fragmented, over race, over the viet-nam conflict, over politics..Kennedy and King were not even a decade in thier graves...The court system, along with the lawyers, had begun taking a generation-long run at the laws necessary to hold the world in check..Victims were secondary to thier victimisers in terms of the legal community and the court system, and the police were restrained from both protecting the innocent or doing any real damage to the guilty...
This is the world in which this film operates...Kersey,a product of that other, older world, expected some protection for himself and his family, expected that the law would function as it should, and was horribly surprised to find that it did not..His world was shattered, and nothing whatever was done to rectify it...
Becoming a vigilante, while a step, was not one that was without precedent..at about this same time,in New York where this film was set,the real world had just encountered Bernard Goetz, the so-called"subway shooter"..a meek nebbish,Goetz had claimed that he was subject to threats and harrassment,on a subway car, from several youths, some of which Goetz had then shot...Given the criminal records some of his victims had,Goetz became something of a hero to the same sort of people as our mister Kersey, although,as in the film,law-enforcement took a very dim view of Goetz or his solution to this sort of problem...Indeed,despite the ample evidence that Goetz was indeed threatened by at least some of the youths involved,he,and not they, was the focus of police activity...
So then,do we have here a film that saw a real event and then re-wrote it to adapt better as a screen thriller,or do we have a film that absorbed much of what was going on in real life at that time and regurgitated it back as a harrowing vision?
This first film was the best of the lot..All of the others that came afterward had less and less to say about why such a fellow as Kersey might be able to operate as he did, opting instead to raise the blood and body-count levels.ironicly playing to the same sense and senibilities in the audience as Kersey the killer was gunning down on the cinematic streets...For as the death wish films repeated themselves endlessly thier core audience seemed more interested in violence and less interested in motivation,or consequences...and the Kersey charecter became a mere killing machine, piling up the bodies, but offering no solutions other than becoming the same sort of offender as those he turned his guns upon...
For Bronson,"Death Wish"was something of a turning point..In many of his films before he had cultivated a neat sort of personna,a half bad good guy, seen in"The Mechanic",
"The Magnificent Seven"and a number of other similiar vehicles..This film allowed Bronson to act, rather than to re-act,and it showed that he was more able to do so than was perhaps generally thought at that time...Alas,after"Death Wish"Bronson more or less gave in to the urge to become a"star"rather than remaining an actor..much of what he pumped out afterwards, with few exceptions, played to a core audience that went to see gunfire, blood and lots of violent activity, with little plotline and even less acting...
Is"Death Wish"a good movie?Yes,in it's way..It says a lot about the way we were, and even more about why we are the way we are now..

5 out of 5 stars The original and the best!!!.......2007-02-15

Although, I was only exactly four years old on July 24, 1974, the date in which this movie was released but from all the accounts I have read from that time, and even from some of the reviews written here already, New York City`s crime rate was rather high. This movie tapped into what people`s feeelings were as far as the crime issue goes during that time.
Unless you lived in that era, it is hard to see how a film like this could be so controversial at the time. But the very thought of an ordinary citizen taking the law into his own hands was unheard of. After many years of insipid sequels and countless imitators, Death Wish still shines like a gem.
    This is one of Bronson`s best performances. He is the peaceable middle aged, longish haired,liberal architect Paul kersey until his world is shattered. Scenes that are noteworthy of Bronson`s acting are;
a)When kersey is waiting at the hospital withis son in law, Jack about news relating to his wife and daughter.
    b) When he receives news that his wife has died, he starts to break down.
    c) Before plugging his first victm, kersey is overcome with fear. Does he shoot or hand over the money. The former option wins out and after shooting his would be mugger, Kersey is just watching his victim writhe in pain . He is in a state of hesitancy and shock before he hightails it back to his apartment.
d)Whe he arrives at his apartment, Kersey feels nauseous and weak from what he has just done. The liberal architect turned vigilante races for the toilet and vomits.
The fim explores kersey`s transformation into a vigilante who becomes more cocksure of himself . He rides on a subway train carrying a bag full of groceries and in a diner, he counts out large amount of bills openly in order to lure muggers into his trap.
And another favorite scene of mine is when kersey and some of his associates are sitting at a resturaunt, there is a televised press conference in which the NYPD commissioner is urging the vigilante to desist from his one man crusade and turn himself into the police. The patrons are all attentive to the Tv set, unaware the vigilante is amongst them. Our hero simply smirks at the commissioners suggestion to turn himself in while he`s downing his dinner, almost as in a taunt; `No, let`s see if you can try and get me.'
Eventually, the police do get their man after Kersey is injured by muggers during his vigilante quest. Inspector Ochoa orders Kersey at his hospital bed to leave NYC, but it doesnt mean that Kersey won`t stop his his crusade. Once he arrives at the main Chicago train sation, he sees a bunch of skells harassing a young woman. Kersey goes over to help her gather her luggage which was strewn all over the place by the skells. The skells see this and start mocking him. Our vigilante smiles and points an imaginary gun in their direction.
This is a great movie and a provactive one at that. Many critics were split in their opinions with no middle ground. They either loved it or hated it. And the public flocked to this movie in droves. It was one of the top ten movies in `74.
Unfortunatley, the lameness of the sequels and countless imitators have diluted the impact of this classic somewhat. But it still remains a gripping, intriguing movie.
This is one of Charles Bronson`s best performances and he is very convincing and believable as the conscientious objector turned vigilante. His later performances in the subsequent sequels were as emotional amd involved as a wet dish rag. Steven Keats is excellent as the beleagured son in law, Jack, and Vincent Gardenia shines as the police inspector Frank Ochoa who is determined to apprehend the vigilante.

This layered film, a labor of love from director Jonathan Demme and star Oprah Winfrey, covers a lot of turf in its nearly three-hour running time. Part slavery fable, part mother-daughter tale, part ghost story, Beloved demands an audience's full attention from its dramatic, slightly bewildering opening, when a family dog comes down on the wrong side of some angry, unseen force. But Demme and his talented cast provide an unforgettable payoff for those who surrender.

The film traces the life of Sethe (played in her middle years by Winfrey), a former slave who has rebuilt what seems to be a peaceful, productive life in Ohio. Yet through chilling, sparing use of flashback, Demme slowly unveils, as does the Toni Morrison masterpiece on which the film is based, the horrors of Sethe's former life, and the terrible event that led to the haunting of Sethe's home.

While the horrors of slavery and the bloody event in Sethe's family leave undeniable impressions, the film's brilliance is also evidenced in smaller, equally satisfying ways. Rachel Portman's spiritual-influenced score is as uplifting as it is haunting, and the glimpses of the post-slavery African American world--as with a simple family outing to a local carnival, or a ladies' sewing-and-gospel circle--make this a treat for the intellect as well as the heart. The members of the cast, especially Kimberly Elise as Sethe's struggling daughter and Thandie Newton as the mysterious title character, are supremely affecting. --Anne Hurley

The purpose of screenwriters who adapt a novel is to make the viewer NOT have to read the novel in order to understand the film! That said, I have watched BELOVED several times since it's theatrical release in 1998. At that time I thought that I would NEVER revisit this nearly three hour debacle. There is SO much to admire about this film; the acting is first-rate;the Rachel Portman soundtrack is positively one of if not her best;the cinematography of Fuj Sakimoto is outstanding.........but something still is lost somewhere in the translation of Toni Morrison's novel either in the screenplay or the editing that makes this an extremely difficult movie to follow. There are SO many stories going on in this film that it is hard to know just where to "hang your hat." It is a story of slavery, of women's strength, of supernatural/spirituality, of a daughter's needs/jealousy,there are ghosts, there is a certain weirdness that,...well......YIKES!!!....how much more needs to be crammed in to make this film make sense...or more senseless??? Believe me, I admire much about the scope of this film, but it has serious problems that should have been fixed. Perhaps the "labor of love" that Oprah and Demme felt for the book only clouded their judgment in the final product. The film is sprawling and loses all center focus. A film and a screenplay need to stand on their own WITHOUT forcing a viewer to read the book OR read other reviews in order to totally understand what they just saw!!! This is where BELOVED fails miserably. What you walk away with is ONLY what you can piece together (or think you can piece together!). I still watch this film for all of it's beauty and yet still come away with a certain emptiness that mourns the loss of what could have been a truly great film!

4 out of 5 stars get ready to rewind!.......2007-05-30

This was a good movie, but I found it hard to follow at points. I had to rewind a few times to be able to follow the story plot.

4 out of 5 stars requires full attention.......2007-03-16

I had it on my mind for many years to watch Beloved. It came on televison a few weeks back, but I purposefully avoided watching it on network TV, since I'm sure some parts would be edited out.

I'm quite confused by so many negative reviews here. So many people use The Color Purple as a reference point, which is entirely plausable. In fact, I myself draw parallels between Beloved and The Color Purple, even to Their Eyes Were Watching God. The overall impression I get from the mixed/negative reviews is that, while The Color Purple is heartwarming, Beloved is weird and cold. It seems that people forget that The Color Purple deals also with disturbing themes, like incest. It's just that they come to the forefront of Beloved a whole lot more. Honestly, what do people want, a reprise of The Color Purple?

If you read between the lines, many reviewers here have been dumbed down by a stream of Hollywood films. When Thandie Newton stands stark naked and pregnant on the porch in broad daylight, it is NOT a sexy scene. Shame on those who equate nudity with titillating sex scenes and nothing else. I could go on and on... peruse the reviews for yourself.

Overall, I was quite satisfied with the film. Yes, I had questions that weren't answered, such as why Paul D refers to Beloved as "red heart" during a pivotal scene. Still, most of the questions you have will be answered if you pay close attention, and rewind a couple of scenes.

If there is one thing I would have liked more, it would have been more of the backstory of the town of Sweet Home. You only get a small glimpse and understanding through flashback. While this makes for good cinema, it does leave your curiosity unsatisfied. I'm sure many, like myself, will want to read the book to fill in the blanks.

5 out of 5 stars What Cost For Freedom.......2007-03-10

The book came to life in this movie. This is one of the most heart wrenching films I have ever seen. I knew what to expect from the book but to see it happen was a totally different thing. How does an escaped slave learn to live free? As young Sethe (Lisa Gay Hamilton) is able to make her way to freedom in Ohio she is faced with a horrid choice when one day her ex-master shows up to claim her and her children as his property. Flashbacks of the past are throughout this film while Sethe (Oprah) is telling her story to Paul D. (Danny Glover). At the same time these things are happening Sethe and her daughter Denver (Kimberly Elise) are being constantly teased and tormented by a ghost. Then a mysterious young lady arrives and is known as Beloved. This homeless girl takes up residence with Sethe and her family and strange things continue to happen. You really need to read the book to fully understand the premise of the movie. Beloved is one of those hard to watch films because of the graphic violence put upon slaves and also a very disturbing scene involving children. So be warned...

this was deeply disturbing and quite confusing. it probably would have been really beautiful if i could understand what the heck was going on.

Meet Joe Black seemed almost fated to fail when it was released in 1998, but this romantic fantasy--a remake of 1934's Death Takes a Holiday--deserves a chance at life after box-office death. Although many moviegoers were turned off by director Martin Brest's overindulgent three-hour running time, those who gear into its deliberate pace will find that Meet Joe Black offers ample reward for your attention.

Brad Pitt plays Death with a capital D, enjoying some time on Earth by inhabiting the body of a young man who'd been killed in a shockingly sudden pedestrian-auto impact. Before long, Death has ingratiated himself with a wealthy industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and pursues romance with the man's beautiful daughter (newcomer Claire Forlani), whom he'd briefly encountered while still an earthbound human. Under the assumed identity of "Joe Black," he samples all the pleasures that corporeal life has to offer--power, romance, sex, and such enticing pleasures as peanut butter by the spoonful.

But Death has a job to do, and Meet Joe Black addresses the heart-wrenching dilemma that arises when either father or daughter (the plot keeps us guessing) must confront his or her inevitable demise. The film takes its own sweet time to establish this emotional crisis and the love that binds Hopkins's semidysfunctional family so closely together. But if you've stuck with the story this far, you may find yourself surprisingly affected. And if Meet Joe Black has really won you over, you'll more than appreciate the care and affection that gives the film a depth and richness that so many critics chose to ignore. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie........2007-06-15

I watched this movie for the first time while surfing through my HD Channels. But I'll admit that I wasn't interested in watching this movie when it was first released or any other time it was available on premium channels. However, more recently I have become more intrigued by Brad Pitt and it's probably because of all the current media hype he's recently received as half of the hottest Hollywood couple. Aside from wanting to see more of Brad and his acting, the picture quality was quite amazing and enough to get me into the movie. Each scene was like still life photography. From the rooms of the Parrish mansion to the boardroom, the color and tone of the set was just beautiful. Even some of the elements such as the cake samples were unique and colorful and lend such timelessness to this film. Although the sound editing put me and my remote to work with its highs (Music) and lows (Voice), the video quality fared much better as HD made for some wonderful viewing, especially of Brad. The early scene of Brad's freak pedestrian accident was so unfortunate, but convincing enough to link him to his Death character. I anticipated every scene and found some scenes and acting a bit quirky (peanut butter), while other scenes, particularly the intimate one, simply enthralling. Needless to say, I became a willing hostage up to the party scene, at which time I had to pull myself away for another urgent commitment. However, I will have to savor the rest and probably the best parts of the film for when I purchase the DVD. I really look forward to viewing it again from beginning and to the very end.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-06-08

What a cast! Anthony Hopkins his usual professional self and Brad Pitt doing as well. It would have earned a 5 star rating but for the times that the musical background overwhelmed conversations, especially intimate ones. Not a problem if one uses close captioning.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful, touching film!.......2007-06-03

Today is the first time I have seen this movie and I must say I am amazed at the depth of the story and the love in the family. I had no idea how deep and moving the story was. Admittedly, I had no interest in seeing this movie when it first came out because I am not a Brad Pitt fan, but I have to admit he puts on an amazing performance in his ability to show his love for Susan through his facial expressions...just breathtaking.

Sir Anthony Hopkins also delivered an amazing performance, as always. Regardless of what role he is playing in a movie, he always manages to take me breath away; I just love him. He is one of few actors in Hollywood would actually enjoy meeting.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-05-22

Nevermind what you hear about the length of this film. The beautiful and almost flawless acting on the part of all makes up for it. Especially moving are Brad, Claire and (of course) Anthony Hopkins. Not to forget to mention the music! Awesome! I would watch this movie over and over again. There is almost always something you miss that, when found or realized, makes the movie even more touching and awesome and you are able to appreciate even more the hard work that was put into it. Perfect movie for an evening at home. A true audio/visual conversational masterpeice.

Superior acting, writing, and direction are on impressive display in the critically acclaimed Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's 24th directorial outing and one of the finest films of 2003. Sharply adapted by L.A. Confidential Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland from the novel by Dennis Lehane, this chilling mystery revolves around three boyhood friends in working-class Boston--played as adults by Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, and Kevin Bacon--drawn together by a crime from the past and a murder (of the Penn character's 19-year-old daughter) in the present. These dual tragedies arouse a vicious cycle of suspicion, guilt, and repressed anxieties, primed to explode with devastating and unpredictable results. Eastwood is perfectly in tune with this brooding material, giving his flawless cast (including Laura Linney, Marcia Gay Harden and Laurence Fishburne) ample opportunity to plumb the depths of a resonant human tragedy, leading to an ambiguous ending that qualifies Mystic River for contemporary classic status. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Engrossing Movie.......2007-07-06

It continually amazes me how people can look at the same thing and have such wide-ranging opinions of its worth. I found this film to my liking, although I didn't cotton to the ending. In order to enjoy this movie, one must have an attention span longer than 10 seconds, and one must enjoy drama that doesn't involve shooting and exploding and car chases and action that is unrealistic/absurd. The story is realistic, and the acting is superb. I love stuff that makes sense and is not in la la land.

4 out of 5 stars Good but boring.......2007-07-01

Clint Eastwood makes boring movies. I don't know what else to say. It may just be that the cinemotography itself is dark so you fall asleep. It was a good film, with the acting saving it and though I never read the book, I heard it was like the book. Sean Penn deserved the Oscar but why this film got a Best Picture Nom. is beyond me. Eastwood is the golden child of the Academy and it is starting to get me mad

4 out of 5 stars very emotional, driven by great performances..........2007-06-09

Sean Penn, without a doubt, is the heart and soul of this movie... Mystic River is one of the very best of Clint Eastwood's pictures and it features highly charged emotions in a great screenplay that flows beautifully despite the length of the film... It all comes back to childhood this is something (I think) we should all know - and something the characters in this movie discover as they fumble around trying to right the wrongs of the world.. Tim robbins' character (i try to be careful not to give away plot elements) is torn inside from a childhood experience and sees the world as a place where vampires roam and suck the blood of the innocent - something he takes upon himself to venge against.. Sean Penn's character is intent on finding justice himself following the death of his daughter.. and kevin bacon (who is a cop) is obviously trying to make up for the wrongs of the world - all three try and fail - because at heart they are children (like we all are) born to suffer in an unjust world.. Mystic river will make you cry if you truly let it break through your personal barriers.. Though i am not normally a fan of such movies (i generally find them predictable) 'mystic river', despite its rehashed dramatic techniques, works out - highly recommended..

5 out of 5 stars Drawn into the Mystic.......2007-04-06

Mystic River is a triumph for Clint Eastwood. Truly a moving film, Mystic River never lets your eyes wander from the screen as you're completely focused on this very disturbing story. A film capturing the adult lives of once childhood friends, played by Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon, you watch as they come together once again after what appears to be many years of brief and intermittent run-ins with each other.

Sean Penn plays somewhat of a wise, yet immature loose cannon of a man, Kevin Bacon as a MPD (Massachusetts) detective and Tim Robbins as the man whose life was forever altered because of a shocking childhood trauma, these three play off of each other very well. I wanted to reach out to each of them. There are moments where some may see Kevin Bacon's character as a bit flushed out, but it appears that this is more effective than not. We jump from age 10 to probably late 30's, early 40's of these three men and we learn little about them that helps to explain so much.

After Penn's daughter is brutally murdered, Bacon and Laurence Fishburne (a fine choice to partner with Bacon) take on the case to find her killer. The three friends are all shaken up (obviously Penn is destroyed over hiss loss) and the mystery seems to unfold quite rapidly. This is definitely one of the most intriguing mystery films I've seen in a long time.

Fans of those earlier mentioned should really enjoy this film. There are also some excellent and shocking performances by Laura Linney and Marcia Gay Harden. I highly recommend this film. Its disturbing and almost heart-wrenching (perhaps even angering) subject will attract any looking for a solid dramatic mystery with some very memorable characters. This is one to add to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Much Ado about nothing.......2007-04-01

I personally started liking Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption & Sean Penn from Dead Man Walking and I believe these were the movies these guys should have recieved oscar for their outstanding roles.
Keeping than in mind and seeing lot of recommendations I saw Mystic River which the review said was the best as far as Clint Eastwood was concerned
Again he had adapted another movie, Bridges of Madison County, which in my personal opinion was much better adaptation of a novel.
The story line eventhough is good about three friends meeting again by fate and all the script is not that strong. I actually fell asleep in between.
Off the cast my personal belief is Kevin Bacon was really good. Sure Tim
Robbins plays a character of sexually abused child with lot of conviction but even that was potrayed better in Shawshank Redemption where he is abused by a few inmates.
And the end is kind of loose.
    Give it a miss
