Product Description
New York cab driver Korben Dallas didn't mean to be a hero, but he just picked up the kind of fare that only comes along every five thousand years: A perfect beauty, a perfect being, a perfect weapon. Now, together, they must save the world. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.
Customer Reviews:
Great movie finally remastered.......2007-07-02
This is a really fun, fun movie. It's not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a good combination high adventure, situation comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn't make sense? Don't worry. I'll explain.
High adventure comes from the plot: save the earth from evil by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That much is obvious. Cyberpunk explains in a way the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a situation comedy? You got it. I won't get into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you find in sitcoms. This is a good thing by the way. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.
Acting is great. Despite popular opinion of models not being very good actors the models that acted in this film did a good job of being campy in an entertaining way without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the price of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy "Tiny" Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was pretty dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the plot and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh... Hollywood.
The movie can get too trendy. The music, though nice, didn't really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby...). And there is a scene or two that was just trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.
Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you get the full 1080p love you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No problem. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Just contact Sony and they will set up a way you can pass your old blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:
Phone: (800) 860-2878
Email: consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com
One downside though: no extras. That's right. All the cool stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is just like getting the first one they released. You get only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would still wait until they make some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you get the higher resolution AND the goodies.
If you want to experience a varied range of pleasant emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you're going to love The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first come out.

Go for the Ultimate or Extreme edition. .......2007-06-22
I love this movie, it is one of my all time favorites. I recently upgraded to a Blu-Ray player and this is one of the first movies I bought. I am hugely disappointed in the quality and features of this BD. It honestly sux. I went from the Ultimate edition to this BD edition and took a huge step back. The quality is about the same as the Ultimate or Extreme editions and there are no bonus features. This was one of the big movies I bought a Blu-ray player for, so you can understand my disappointment. I will probably sell it and re-buy the Ultimate or Extreme edition. I recommend waiting to see if they come out with an Ultimate or Extreme edition on Blu-ray before buying this one.
im happy with this version.......2007-04-21
it may not be the extended version with cut scenes. I will say i watched this movie on digital cable and compared it to the blu0ray version and trust me there is a big difference more colors no smearing of facial features like on the cable version and the sound is incredible. If your hdtv sucks then blu-ray version may suffer if the difference is not noticable its your tv
and not the blu-ray disc. This is a must have for terminator fans!
Upscaled DVD at Best!!!.......2007-04-18
High hopes were set in place for this blu-ray release, and I have to admit I am sadly dissapointed.
The transfer is only a 'fraction' above watching a SD DVD version upscaled, which is a real shame.
Buy at your own risk, or wait for a much better release, hopefully Director's Cut, remastered and all.
2.5/5 for effort.

Great movie on bluray.......2007-03-25
I bought this movie because I'm a fan and it is one of my top five action movies of all time. I wanted to see this film at it's best on bluray and I was not disappointed. The picture and sound is awsome. The commentary by James Cameron is a treat, one the most interesting commentarys I've listend to. It lacks some of the extras that dvd versions may have contained, but the bluray transfer of of the movie is superior to the dvd version. Finally, I can enjoy a sharp picture on my wide screen.
DVD quality at best.......2007-03-24
Anyone with a upconverting DVD player, or just a Blu-ray / PS3 will get the same quality of picture from the standard DVD. The transfer of this movie would need to be cleaned up digitally before it will be up to what Blu-ray can show. It's truely shocking the difference in quality between the menue footage which is true 1080p and fresh VS the lower grade transfure from the film with no digital clean-up. Anyone with the standard DVD should just save their money.

Amazon.com essential video
This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley
Description
In the year 2029, the ruling super-computer, Skynet, sends an indestructible cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) before she can fulfill her destiny and save mankind.

true classic.......2007-06-27
Schwarzeneggers Terminator debut is the best one in my
opinion but the technic isnt that good escpecially in
the last scenes animation of the robot ist done quit
simple for its time ok but today truely bad.
as for the imagequality forget about that fast.
Blu Ray is no magician but it is defenetly the best version when it comes to clear pictures
but no comparison to a new movie thats filmed with HD equipment.
Great Movie, but this is not the Special Edition DVD........2007-06-23
Don't be fooled, I have been looking everywhere for the Real Special Edition DVD.
The first DVD was a barebones Disc that was non-anamorphic. Then in 2001 MGM released the Special Edition with the following features.
- Other Voices Documentry.
- Terminator: a retrospective fetturette.
- Deleted Scenes with optional Commentary
- Theatrical trailers and TV spots.
- DVD-ROM features.
The DVD that Amazon is selling is only includes one trailer and some DVD-ROM stuff. I can't find the Special Edition DVD anywhere. Also, there are three Reagon 2 releases, a Special Editon, a Definitive Edition, and an Ultimate Edition! Why aren't there any Reagon 1 Ultimate Editions, all we have is a barebones Disc with no good extras. Someone tell me where I can find the Reagon 1 Special Edition DVD.
Man plus Machine equals Schwarzenegger!.......2007-06-16
Entertainment Weekly recently touted the first sequel ("Terminator 2: Judgment Day") to this film as being one of The Twenty-Five Best Action Films of all time. That title may be an accurate assessment of the non-stop action of the sequel but what would it have been without its predecessor which ranks as one of the best science fiction commentaries on the path that we may be going with our computer-dependent society.
James Cameron scored a casting coup when he gave the role to Arnold. At the time, the muscle-bound actor had had a few films under his belt, films that played mostly on his physical appearance and his novice acting skills. "The Terminator" character was short on dialogue but Cameron made the best of his star by providing him with one-line zingers and stares that could wake the dead.
To call the part "tailor-made" for Schwarzenegger would be a major understatement. He was muy perfecto.
Linda Hamilton, not yet the household name that she would become for TV's "Beauty and the Beast," as well as not yet the future "Mrs. James Cameron," is appropriately confused and terrified as the waitress that would ultimately become the mother of the man that would rescue humanity.
Michael Biehn is well-cast as the other traveler from the future, intent on preventing Arnold's malevolent cyborg from doing his killing-thing.
Stan Winston's effects still hold their own after almost a quarter of a century.
Great movie.......2007-06-07
Great movie, pretty impressive FX for it's time. The Blu-ray version suffers a little due to this movie's old master. It's no where near being Pirates of the Carabean clear (Probably the best Blu-ray video quality so far).
There are some extras, one which show the making of the FX, which is a plus.
But for 19 dollars, it's a no brainer. Get Blu-Ray version if you don't already own DVD version.
The Terminator.......2007-05-27
Lots of action from beginning to end. If you love an action film, this is for you!
Schwarzenegger was a perfect pick to play this character.

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has

something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick

DVD features
Melange fans have a lot to be excited about with this impressive edition of Dune, though the "Extended Edition" label is a bit misleading. If you are expecting the mythic 4 hour "David Lynch preferred" version that is rumored to be sitting in a vault, don't get your hopes up. This isn't it. In an attempt to quickly sober spice-fueled giddy fans, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis (daughter of Dino De Laurentiis) immediately reveals in the 'Deleted Scenes' introduction that the rumored 4 hour version is just that; a rumor. What this DVD set does contain is the 2 Hour 17 Minute original theatrical release digitally remastered, available for the first time in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD
Knife fight! |
is the alternate 2 hour 57 minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle. All other extras focus on the international production crew of Dune including the design team, special effects, and short documentaries on the miniature models and wardrobe designs. Disappointingly, there are no appearances in the bonus features by any of the original cast or Lynch himself. However, many of the production crew members talk openly about working with David Lynch and his artistic involvement in the visual process. To cap it off, this edition comes in a very stylish and sturdy DVD tin that opens like a keep case. --Rob Bracco

Dune: epic classic, timeless, powerful..........2007-06-20
For all those cheese-balls who criticized "Dune" when it came out in 1984, you're a bunch of goobs! I've read all the books, especially the first two books several times. It is a complicated environmental, political, religious, mythological masterpiece from Frank Herbert. The movie was poorly-received in theatres because most folks that went to see it back in the day couldn't stand to sit for more than two hours, never read the books (they are heady and complex), and didn't make much of an attempt to really get into the movie. Likewise, due to having shot way too long a movie, the DiLaurentiis folks had to edit the movie hardcore so it left some gaps.
All-in-all, I was eleven years old when I saw this movie back in the 80's an I understood it just fine. I came to grasp it even more as I read the novels.
The movie is basically about royal families competing against one another for a substance known as "the spice," which represents crude oil on earth. The fremen are a parallel-Muslim-type culture that lives in the desert where the "oil" or "spice" is harvested. Complex politics and intrigue are everywhere.
The acting is SUPERB! Kyle MacLachlan was the best choice is the world to play Paul, Sting was perfect as Feyd, good ole' Kenneth MacMillan was the GREATEST Baron Harkonnen ever, and overall there was an excellent international cast. The costumes, backdrops, scenery, and TOTO SOUNDTRACK were all unforgettable. I'm a huge Toto fan anyway (saw 'em in concert recently)...David Paich, the keyboardist and main songwriter for Toto delivered some music that will give you goose pimples.
I like this extended edition because it shows deleted scenes that add SO MUCH to this movie!!
Dune is quirky at times with some whispering and drawn-out scenes but in general it is so much fun, so heady, so vast, and despite the wild fantasy world we see in it, it seems believable at times. Fun trip. Worth every penny....
It's worth the spice to buy!
Loved it, but really want the extra-long version........2007-06-15
Loved it, but really want the extra-long version.
I don't know why I like this, I just do-.......2007-05-11
I am a huge fan of the entire Dune legacy. The films, the mini series... books (Frank Herbert's- haven't read the son's yet because it always tics me off when something good is dragged out long after the originator is gone... who knows if these books were part of Frank's vision- BUT I digress)
Where was I, oh yeah. Love Dune. Though this version is not true to the book, it has some true merit. You have to remember that it is from the 80s and forgive the effects, but if you are looking for sort of a cliff notes version of the storyline, this is it. Just don't watch it in place the book and go to a book club thinking you know the story.
Besides, you get to see all sorts of actors much younger than they are now, Patrick Stewart, Kyle M, Sting, and that dude from Quantam Leap just to name a few.
Good movie fodder to watch, and who cares what happens next- for he is the Kwisatz Haderach.
I liked it then and I still like it now, more than ever..........2007-05-11
David Lynch's vision and take on Dune may not compare to the book from which it is taken, but as a stand alone movie, both in its theatrical, as well as in its lengthened (directed by Alan Smithee...) version, are a product that can be considered valid.
The story is there, in its essence, the characters are there, although not really all as in the Novel, but then there is really no need for all of them, since it would just complicate an already intricate storyline.
Suffice it to say that this movie, even after all these many years, can still stand a comparison with newer Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies.
The style, the actors, the music and the scenery alone, lend it an aura of mythical proportions and this makes it far more than just another "cult" movie, but rather the vision of a true artist, confronted with a vision of another artist and mixing his own to the latter, and in this, David Lynch truly excels.
The cast includes a very young Kyle MacLachlan, masters of the trade, such as Max von Sydow, Juergen Prochnow, Patrick Stewart, Sian Phillips, Jose Ferrer, Freddie Jones and many others, whose talents are undisputed to give life to so bigger-than-life characters.
For the first time ever, we get both "takes" on the movie on a single, double-sided disc. One, as mentioned before, the Theatrical version, and the second, the lengthened TV version of the same, in 2.35:1 ratio and in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo.
For the price this is a well worthy buy, unless you already own an HD-DVD Player, in which case you may also opt to have that copy, but be warned, that copy only includes the theatrical version.
Before there was Star Wars.......2007-04-15
Some fun facts:
Dune was written and published in 1965
Star Wars was released in 1978
Dune the movie was released in 1984
I first saw Star Wars in the theaters in 1978 and became hooked to the series.
I never watched Dune or read it until recently and this is my take on the whole thing.
When I sat down and watched Dune I was surprised by the cheap sets and poor special effects. Star Wars had this movie beat hands down.
However, when it comes to the story of Dune: it is a great and amazing plot and adventure. I can now see where George Lucas was inspired for Star Wars.
As far as this DVD it has lots of hours of entertainment. You just have to get past some of the cheesy sets and filming.
All in all its a good DVD to have in your collection.

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

What's Not to Love!.......2007-06-29
As I have recently become a solid fan Milla Jovovich and her work, I was compelled to see this movie again. I remember from my younger days seeing this film and not understanding that it was intended to be an action/comedy! Let me just say, when it comes to any movie that leans more toward comedy than action, this movie does it all!
The acting is superb in this movie. Everyone plays their roles perfectly. Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, and dare I say even... Luke Perry. A very solid cast that don't take themselves too seriously and just seem to have fun in the film!
Of course, we have Willis saving the world; along with Tucker as an inadvertent side-kick; and the love interest and connection with Jovovich! This movie tackles every major genre all in one! Action, comedy, adventure, romance, and sci-fi all wrapped up in a fun-filled "B" movie that has become a cult classic!
For a good time, see this movie! If not just for Gary Oldman doing an awesome job as the evil man from the south, and a very big former professional wrestler as the United States President!
A change of heart.......2007-06-13
I first saw this film at the theater when it was first released. At the time, the slogan that went with it was "...go beyond Star Wars, go beyond Star Trek..."
Wow. That's a pretty bold statement. I had been a life long fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars as well us Luc Besson's previous work (Le Femme Nikita, and the masterful The Professional). I was really looking forward to this movie.
And then I was disappointed.
The film is visually stunning (obviously borrowing heavily from Blade Runner), but the movie was MUCH different than either Star Trek or Star Wars.
First of all, the film was VERY campy. It made no attempts to deliver a serious or believable story. Most of the characters delivered their lines as if they were all taking part in one huge inside joke.
Some of the cinematography was done is such a way that I felt as though I were watching an '80s rock video.
The special effects, however, are probably the biggest redeeming qualities of this film. They are absolutely impeccable. The costumes and set designs were very good as well.
But this movie could never even hope to hold a candle to the Star Wars or Star Trek franchise. It was more of a comedy than anything else.
To be quite honest, after I saw the movie.....I hated it.
Then came the VHS release. With some trepidation, I decided to rent it and give it another chance. This time, I knew what to expect. I knew that I wasn't going "beyond Star Trek" or "beyond Star Wars". I was able to watch the film a second time with no preconceived notions of what it was going to be like.....
.....and I actually ENJOYED it!
If taken for what it is (a sci-fi action-comedy), The Fifth Element is actually quite a well-crafted and executed little film. Just don't expect the film to deliver something better than what Star Wars or Star Trek has to offer.
I learned an important lesson from the marketing of this movie. It's best to go into a film without any ideas of what it will be like or what it SHOULD be like, despite what the advertisements may suggest.
All in all, I did buy a copy of the DVD for my collection and I do watch this movie from time to time. It's fun escapism, but Star Wars it's not.
One of the Best Sci Fi Movies Ever.......2007-06-12
I would rank this movie up there with the top 10 greatest Sci Fi movies. Special effects...stupendous. Storyline...excellent. Casting, Acting, Costumes...all top notch. If you don't own this movie, you should purchase it NOW!!
Thank you, French guy!.......2007-05-29
This is it, folks. An actual apex of film making, as only a French guy could bring.
And let me attest to this now: It's been BROUGHT!
LEON is probably my favorite movie of all time, but this movie just goes off in directions that no other film has gone before. I have now idea how this film can be so funny, so tragic, so inspiring, and so sad all at the same time, but it does, and it does it well.
Do you know what I'm most thankful for? That they didn't make a sequel. I (usually) really hate sequels, and a sequel to this would have blown. If you've seen Starship Troopers 2, then you know what I'm talking about.
So what would Marc Antony do? DUH! He'd drop Cleopatra like a small pox scab and run off with Mila Jovivic! (is that how you spell her name?)
One of my favorite movies.......2007-05-17
I love this movie, in fact I'm going to have to watch it again this week now that I have been reminded I have it. Oh yeah, superbit is pretty cool, but I bought the superbit version as a gift for my parents.

LOVE this movie!!!.......2007-05-28
What can I say? Bruce Willis is at his best, and Milla, an actress, a model, and a singer, all in one, (no, not in the movie), brings her character to life in a beautiful way, like the unfurling of a rose.
The clincher for me was the character, Plavalaguna, the Diva, whose singing performance left me STUNNED. Granted, although I knew it was a bit tweaked, her vocal performance on stage, as well as her presence is enough alone to see this movie, if just to watch her perform "The Mad Scene" from the opera, "Lucia Di Lamamoor". A REAL twist on it, that one must see to experience.
Blu-Ray all the WAY. Bruce Willis in 1080p.......2007-05-26
Blowing things up and the great space scenes can't be matched without 1080p. It's fun to watch over and over.
I simply love the movie.......2007-05-19
Recently i bought a PS3 and one of the first movies i bought on Blu-ray was The Fifth Element.
It is by far not the best translation of a movie to the Blu-ray medium but i simply love this movie so much that i had to have it on Blu-ray!
The transfer of this movie to Blu-ray could be better but still it takes your breath away seeing it in a staggering true HD-resolution.
Sony says it is to re-release this movie after it's been remastered on July 17th so if you want it you could try to wait a few months before buying this masterpeace.
Since i live in The Netherlands and should only be able to watch region B blu-ray discs, i was very pleased to see that this movie ( region A )also could be played on my PS3 so i can buy some of the region A movies and still will be able to play them on a region B player!
Fun movie. Good for HD........2007-05-14
This movie is not new, but holds it's value for HD viewing. I watched this movie in 1080i on 5.1 DPL. I have to express the greatness of watching action scenes in HD as well as with the surround sound. This movie doesn't let these effects escape. Horns, guns, screaming and whatnot surround the room. The picture is fun too. It's all colorful and sharp. This movie is one of those movies you can watch more than once too. Which helps after you buy it.
Bruce Willis still dying hard in this film.......2007-04-11
Great movie of Bruce doing what Bruce does. Hey the guy is From Jersey. I had to give him 5 stars on this one.

Following the exciting, 2003 animated spectacle Bionicle: Mask of Light, Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui extends Lego's movie franchise based on its Bionicle line of robotic warriors. Legends is actually a prequel to Mask of Light, which focused on the Toa, six guardians of the Matoran tribe on the island of Mata Nui, and the imminent arrival of a seventh member to their ranks. Legends tells the story of how the Toa came to be, chosen from the pool of Matoran youth in the great city of Metru Nui and, though physically transformed, hardly prepared for increased size and superheroic powers. In short order, the Toa--who babble and bicker like agitated adolescents--have to master their new gifts, impress their leader, and prepare to protect their home. Sprawling adventure, nonstop action, and real emotional complexity make this computer-generated universe a continually viable source for endless story possibilities. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
Good story with good values........2006-02-01
I really enjoyed this movie, even moreso than the first. This story has great rolemodels for kids and shows the importance of believing in oneself and standing up against evil. Vakama, the main character, is especially interesting because he's just this normal Matoran thrown into a position in which he has to save his homeland. One of the morals of this movie is that there is a hero in all of us. This movie is about doing what's right, even when everyone doesn't support you or think it's possible.
I also admire the fantasy world that the creators created. There are six different villages (one Toa or hero is from each one), and each have their own culture. Another topic that the film touches on is that of racial prejudice and how in spite of each group's differences, they can still form friendships and overcome problems together. There is some interesting interplay between the three Toa that are in prison and a wise elder tells them, "Your duty is to ALL Matoran, regardless of village."
The movie is actually kind of deep after you watch it a few times and get the characters and plot straightened out. The movie is also funny. Matau is probably the funniest character in the film.
I highly recommend this movie.
Better Than the first.......2005-08-06
It makes me wonder why they didn't make this the first movie instade of the second. But I should I care it was still Great graphics were better this time. great action in this movie . If you're a Bionicle fan get this DVD. Hopefully the Third movie has a great story line has the First two did.
Good Fun for a Father and Son.......2005-07-27
My son and I both enjoyed this tape and can't wait to see the next in the series.
Bionicle 2=Star Wars Episode two.......2005-06-25
This movie is great! It's just as good as SW Episode 2!Some parts were downright hilarious, now thats true. This is a good movie to watch, I should say. I rate this......5 stars!
I don't follow.......2005-04-29
Our boys enjoy bionicles more than you think a 4 & 5 year old could, so they loved this movie and asked to see it over and over again. Any kid who loves bionicles will love this movie.
That said, this movie is almost impossible to follow. You find yourself asking, "Who is that?" and "What just happened?" While we watched it, the adults turned to each other and asked "Did I miss something?"
This movie was obviously edited to keep it short (for one reason or another), and almost all explanatory scenes have been cut out. Only when we read the book with our boys did we understand what was actually going on in the movie. Watching the movie, all you could understand was that Makuta is evil, and the Toa must save the Matorans.
The animation is nothing to "wow" over, but gets the job done.

Lean, lanky Lee Horsley (TV's Matt Houston) is hardly the iconic image of a medieval warrior, but in this cheesy Conan the Barbarian knockoff he makes his swaggering, mercenary Talon a genial smart aleck of a barbarian hero. The plot is pure pulp cliché: evil Cromwell (Richard Lynch) raises a demon to conquer a peaceful kingdom, kill the rulers, and imprison the royal heirs, and the son of a murdered patriot returns to take his righteous vengeance with a projectile-loaded, three-bladed sword. First-time director Albert Pyun apprenticed under Akira Kurosawa and brings with him an eye for handsome images and a fluid sense of action that helps overcome B-movie dialogue ("Unlock this door, wench, and leave that to us!"), scenery-chewing performances, and bargain-basement budget. In one fight sequence a guard punches a rock wall--and dents it! Kathleen Beller (the dark-eyed beauty of The Betsy) is the rebel princess who enlists Talon to the cause, Route 66's charming wanderer George Maharis is a conniving traitor under an unflattering mop of greasy hair, and Richard Moll dons a latex monster mask to play the double-crossed demon. It's utterly silly and often awkward, but it does have energy to spare. The sequel promised at the end of the film was never produced and Pyun went on to direct some of the best straight-to-video action films of the 1990s, including Nemesis. --Sean Axmaker

Uninspired, silly, and needlessly bloody fantasy dreck........2007-07-06
Fantasy movies from the early 1980s, with few exceptions, varied mostly from run of the mill mediocre to painfully bad. Albert Pyun's THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER, a bargain-basement budgeted, uninspired, and messy bloodfest from 1982, falls among the lowest end of the spectrum. Clocking in at a seemingly neverending 100 minutes, it starts out when medieval tyrant King Cromwell (Richard Lynch), on a quest for world domination, resurrects a centuries-old sorcerer, Xusia (Richard Moll, in heavy lizardlike makeup) to conquer the tranquil kingdom of Eh-Dan. Ten years later, Talon (Lee Horseley), a prince who escaped the invasion, leads a band of mercenaries to liberate conquered kingdoms. In the process, he returns to his old home of Eh-Dan, where rightful heir Mikah (Simon MacCordinkale) and his voluptuous sister Alana (Kathleen Beller), are plotting to overthrow Cromwell, who, incidentally, has plans to marry the lass. When Mikah is kidnapped, Alana desperately hires Talon to rescue him; he agrees to do so on the condition that they have a lovemaking session should he succeed. Oh, and incidentally, Xusia (who had been betrayed by Cromwell) is also planning to settle the score with his former ally, spending about a good portion of the last third disguised as a shady court advisor, Mahelli (George Maharis). (This last plot development is handled clumsily and in a groanworthy way, as is much of the movie.)
Taken as a plot concept, THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER sounds fairly uninspired, but it's even worse in its execution. The simplistic plot becomes needlessly convoluted as it bounces all over the place, throwing in lots of unexplained and abrupt developments that come from nowhere--if Cromwell needed Xusia to conquer Eh-Dan, then why does he stab and then throw him over a cliff shortly after smashing a few armies? There are lots of unexplained stupidities, too, particularly in the hero's weapon, which, at the touch of a button, can send one of its *three* blades spearing through an enemy like a projectile; furthermore, at the laughably choreographed final showdown between the villain and the hero, we discover that the sword can opt as an alternate dagger in the event that it is shattered in close combat. That is only one of the many scripting problems contained in this movie.
It's poorly edited, too, particularly the hero's first combat scene with two villains. All the shots in that moment are spliced completely out of order, making it a very choppy and confusing flow. Another particular example of bad editing occurs when a group of rebels makes plans to invade Cromwell's castle, and the next shot shows them all in prison! This is done with no transition or explanation, that it makes it mystifying how they got there.
What ultimately works against THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER overall, however, is the excess of gory violence (one person's face is sliced in half with bloody results, another's heart is ripped out of her chest, and a tongue is cut out) and occasional nudity (the hero swings into a room with topless babes, and in another scene the leading lady is given an oil bath). These two controversial elements can be put to effective use in masterpieces like PAN'S LABYRINTH (lots of horrifying violence, but done in a meaningful way) or, perhaps in CONAN THE BARBARIAN (par for the course with the original pulp novels it was based on). Here, however, both are slapped onto this film for no other apparent reason than just violence and nudity for the mere sake of it. In one particularly distasteful sequence, we see the hero spiked onto a cross, bleeding painfully during the main villain's wedding. Not only did I find this a blasphemous and tasteless echo of Christ's crucifixion, I found it even more ridiculous (and sickening) that Talon would have the gall to yank himself free of the device.
Even without these problems, there's hardly anything to recommend about THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER. The characterizations are mono-dimensional and uninteresting, the acting and the dialogue are terrible (Moll does get some points for being at least scary, even though he has little to do in his surprisingly scanty role, as does MacCordinkale, who does a decent job), and the direction is very amateurish and clumsy. The special effects are also pretty cheesy, particularly the aforementioned sword and especially in a corny transformation scene toward the end of the film where a character literally pulls apart his human skin to reveal a demonic creature. The only thing to come clean out of this dreck is a lively musical score by David Whittaker as well as Moll and MacCordinkale's performances, but otherwise, the movie as a whole is little more than standard junk for undemanding fans of this kind of trashy fantasy.
When it's all over, just before the credits roll, there is a comment made that the hero will have further adventures in an upcoming film called "Tales of the Ancient Empire." Successful as THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER was financially, it's not really all that surprising that audiences were never treated(?) to such a sequel. It never got into production, and probably never will.
Oldie but a goodie!.......2007-06-11
I was very surprised watching this ancient dungeons and dragons-esque film. it reminded me of the days of going to arcades and playing games like "asteroids"! this is a great nostalgia flick from the 80's that is filled with the cliche' "hero" type elements. evil king cromwell (richard Lynch)wants dominion over the land and attempts to do so through the aid of a demon's help (richard Moll as Xusia which is a very well playeed role) to rid himself of all competition. Enter Talon a daring mercenary, whom conquers dungeons, and castles alike! But when Talon learns that he is Prince of a kingdom controlled by an evil sorceror he seeks out the Tri-Bladed sword (the slide sword) and seeks out the demon and the king to save a beautiful princess. can Talon arrive in time? or will Cromwell and the Demon win? watch this excellent albeit old film and find out!
one of the few films like Krull, Conan the Barbarian, Legend, LOTR trilogy and more (just not quite the buget of LOTR) a wonderful adventure suited for advenurers everywhere! (Rated R by the motion picture association of america) color 99 minutes widescreen (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 tv's theatrical trailers and a tv spot wrap this dvd up nicely in a 4 Star package!

The Sword and The Sorcerer.......2007-03-29
This was one of the better sword fantasy movies of the 70's. I enjoyed watching this movie when I was younger and purchased this movie for my teenage son to watch. He enjoyed it as well, although he commented on the special effects being very cheesy compared to what they have now. I reminded him that this was 30 years ago. For then, I think the special effects were rather good.
The Best Cheesy Fantasy Movie Ever.......2007-02-23
So what if some of the dialogue is bad and some of the props are lame? This movie is fun, fast and never takes itself too seriously. Lee Horsley plays the archetypal mercenary/barbarian/Conan figure to perfection and is so likable it makes it all work.
Cromwell is great as is Xusia and Rodrigo and all the rest. A lot of these actors went on to successful TV roles in Murphy Brown, Night Court and of course Horsley in Matt Houston. Look through the credits to see.
I love the three bladed sword that shoots, I love the harem scene and the girls that trip up the soldiers chasing Talon, I love how Kathleen Bell keeps kneeing guys in the crotch until being blocked by the demon (and I learned a very important fact of life: demons have no nads), I love how the mercenaries all get caught trying to sneak back in the castle (hey potatoe head!), I love it all! It is all so much fun. I watch this movie at least once or twice a month and enjoy it again and again.
This film actually won some awards back in the day and made a ton of profit at the box office. It cost around 2 mil to film and raked in over 40 mil. That is why no sequel was ever made b/c the producers retired. But never fear fans of The Sword and the Sorcerer, I am in the works of obtaining the rights and making the sequel come true. Tales of the Ancient Empire will happen. Oh yes, it shall be done!
Talon and His Gillette Mach3 Turbo Razor.......2007-01-30
Our friends at Gillette would have us believe that three blades are better than one. Well then, Prince Talon in The Sword and the Sorcerer was waaaayyyy ahead of his time! Talon's triple-bladed sword not only would break any foe's single blade to pieces, it could launch two of its blades at its target(s).
Not to be one-upped, Gillette has launched the five-blade, battery powered (use a Gillette owned Duracell AAA please) Fusion shaving system that features a patented on-board micro-chip to optimize performance by regulating voltage and frequency. Good God...are consumers really so stupid as to go for such a crock? Oy.
Anyway....
How many movies do you remember seeing back in a different lifetime that you thought were really cool only to check 'em out in the current day and find that they really were average at best? The Sword and the Sorcerer is definitely one of those movies. 25 years is a long time, and my viewing of this film back in 1982 at age 20 was...let's just say..."enhanced" by...well...the things I used to do prior to plopping myself in front of cable TV at 2 a.m.
But The Sword and the Sorcerer is still fun. The audio magicians did a little sorcery of their own and gave Sword a surround sound update back in 2001, but the DVD picture is still as grainy as a VCR would be.
The story is cool. A fictional Days of King Arthur-ish tale of Tyrant Titus Cromwell's rise to power, and, Son of King Richard, Prince Talon's fight to take back the throne that would have been his. Throw in evil Sorcerer Xusia (also vying for the Crown), have him conjure up a ton of camp and a lack of continuity, and you have what-seemed-a-lot-better-at-the-time The Sword and the Sorcerer.
The Sword and the Sorcerer was Albert Pyun's directorial debut (and it shows). But the movie's $40MM box office take surprised even the producers that had originally planned a sequel called Tales of the Ancient Empire that continued the adventure of Prince Talon. Pyun said that Sword was so profitable that ironically a decision was made to scrap the sequel and just bank the profits of the original. Smart move.
Pyun went on to direct a score of B movies and clunkers. The little known lead actors all went on to lead pretty successful TV careers. No sequel was ever made. We all lived happily ever after.

Cartoonist Hal Foster's medieval hero, the Scandinavian Prince Valiant, comes to the screen in all his Dutch-bob-haircut glory in this 1954 film directed by Henry Hathaway (Kiss of Death). Robert Wagner plays the title role and does a bang-up job of it, convincingly portraying the heroic prince as he enters the court of King Arthur (Brian Aherne) in England and becomes (with some tutelage from Sir Gawain, played by Sterling Hayden) a Knight of the Round Table. Determined to restore his dethroned family to their proper seat back home, Valiant takes on the Black Knight (James Mason), who plans to do away with Arthur and then finish his misdeeds back in Scandia. Under such pressure, the prince, quite understandably, falls in love with Princess Aleta (Janet Leigh). Hathaway proves to be the perfect director for this material, as his fluid skill, moderate forcefulness, and adaptability to genre necessities keep the film from teetering too far in the direction of pulp--or self-seriousness. --Tom Keogh
Description
Overthrown and driven into exile, the king of Scandia has fled to Britain with his wife and son, Prince Valiant (Wagner). As a young man, Val hoes to King Arthur's court, where he is befriended by Sir Gawain (sterling Hayden) and trains to be become a knight of the round table. Val also falls in love with a beautiful princess (Leigh) and faces the treachery of the mysterious Black Knight, who is scheming to betray Val's family.

Disappointment.......2007-05-23
This movie cannot be playd in Norway, and should not have been sold abroad.
Prince Valiant was a Viking!.......2007-05-13
Yep, that's what I said, one of the future knights of the round table is the son of an exiled viking king. Who would have thought it? But then again I think Lancelot was French. Oh well, I reckon Arthur had to search high and low to get enough real men to fill up the table.
As I have said with several other movie types (movies with big monsters, movies about Sinbad the Sailor, etc.) I've never seen one of these older movies about Knights I didn't like--naturally I'm talking about the older ones.
Valiant was the star of the show but I feel Sir Gawain had the best part. James Masion played his part just fine. The cutie Janet Leigh had her moments of acting. King Arthur did a fine job of looking and acting saintly and wise. I noticed his queen wasn't making eyes at Lancelot any. Just as well, the movie was about Prince Valiant, not Arthur, the singing sword, or any of the rest. Camelot looked fine. So here we go.
PROS:
1. Ok acting by most--Gawain acted great, so did Masion.
2. Neat idea.
3. Some full size castles and a viking ship.
4. A really hot scene when the viking castle was being taken by storm. It's a surprise they didn't burn it down.
5. You get to see someof the Knights in training...I always did like a fine movie with background type detail.
six. A really fine sword fight scene between Wagner (Valiant) and James Masion.
7. They have some real jousting at the beginning--interesting.
CONS:
There is not really a down side to this movie but allow me to pick at it a little so I can be even handed about it;
1. Vikings are wearing the horned helmets.
2. I'm not sure if Vikings had castles built of stone...sorry.
3. Is everyone of those guys over weight?
4. In the viking's castle, nary a female or kids!
5. When they capture Wagner and Janet Leigh they toss them into a dungeon...I don't think they did that to cuties that looked like her, but just as well, it's a clean movie not really a historic movie.
Ah...why tell any more cons. It's an epic movie, nicely colored. It doesn't have the passion and intensity of Excalibur but it's a fine shot and Excalibur isn't a family film. By the way, besides Valiant, the movie is about a traitor Knight at the round table whos' made a deal with the vikings. Give him Prince Valiant and the vikings will give him one thousand viking warriors to attack Camelot. I can't really say get out the popcorn because this type of old classic is a cut above such things...order pizza! Bye.
So So.......2007-02-09
I love the King Arthur Era movies, but was not thrilled with this one. I found it to be a bit slow, and the characters were not very engaging. There are plenty of other movies like this that are much more enjoyable
The ..."Singing Sword"...overcomes all obstacles.......2007-02-08
There is a certain spiritual quality to this movie, which i first saw as a youth at the Starr Theater in Bushwick, a theater that i considered my second home on the weekends as i paid my 50 cent and immersed myself in the timeless tales of heroes and honor and redemption. The purity and the innocence of Prince Valiant was what struck me the most about this movie... how he saved his father's honor and that of king arthur.. the villans never do get the message... that god can defend the right ..and often does, not only in this movie but in others such as ..The Black Shield of Falworth. (Fidus Et Audax) Faith and Daring.
I just love this movie!.......2007-01-12

He Was A Punk In Star Wars...And Still Is!!.......2007-06-25
Every time I mention The Guyver(not that I mention this movie a whole lot, mind you) to someone, they always think I'm saying MacGyver! Just thought I'd let you know. I don't know squat about the Japanese cartoon, so I'm not here to point out how accurate or inaccurate this movie is. As for the movie itself, I personally find this a guilty pleasure. It was produced by Brian Yuzna, and you can definitely tell. In fact, you could almost swear he directed the film. Now basically we got a guy who stumbles across this one-of-a-kind body armor unit and it makes him a kind of superhero(it's supposed to be the most destructive and dangerous weapon on the planet yet it only really seems to make you a kung fu expert with a snazzy look. Plus, it's got an awfully lame and exposed weakness). An evil corporation wants to get their mitts on this body armor, and they're not about to let some snotnose punk just waltz away with it. Certain employees of this corporation are humans with the ability to transform into monsters that look like Gremlins, werewolves, Gamera-ish things, etc. The head honcho of this corporation is none other than everybody's favorite cinematic severed head, David Gale. He's still playing the evil scientist....and still unable to keep his hands off the female lead. The leader of the bumbling pack of monsters is Michael Berryman! Jeffrey Combs shows up in a small role as well. The coverbox has you under the impression that Mark Hammill is the Guyver, but this isn't true. He's wasted in a CIA agent role while some goof named Jeff Armstrong plays our hero. I do enjoy this movie for it's cheesy thrills, but some of the fight scenes, one in particular, goes on way too long. The makeup jobs are decent enough considering the budget, but there is such a thing as overdosing on big rubber monsters in halfassed kung fu battles(for most of us anyway). It's too much like a kaiju movie or Power Rangers episode. In fact, you almost think it's a kids movie, but then it becomes too violent for that. Not really highly recommended, but it is harmless cinematic junkfood.
thak you.......2007-05-12
think u for taking the time in sending this item it arrived in excellent condition n i hope doin further business
Too goofy to be taken seriously. Too violent to be a kid's movie........2006-09-16
The Gyver was originally a successful Japanese cartoon series that more than a few anime fans in the U.S. got a taste of back in the 80's. It was visually stunning and was one of those shows that helped jump start the freaky looking anime that's became more prevalent as time went by. Apparently someone got the bright idea of making a live action version back in the 90's. Only there were two problems: One the special effects of the time (as well as the apparent budget of the film) wouldn't have measured up to the original content. Second the script was God-awful and completely screwed up everything cool about the original. In the end not even semi-big name talent like Mark Hamill could save this train wreck of a film.
The Gyver, like the original, relies heavily on the visual impact you're supposed to get when seeing hideous and out-of-this-world monsters with powers and strength many times greater than our own. In the cartoon it happened. In the movie not only did it not accomplish this but also apparently it never would have. Instead of nightmare creatures you have guys in foam rubber suits with little or no articulation whatsoever. Movies made in the early 80's had people in monster suits that looked better and responded more realistically than these sad excuses. About the only one that actually looked pretty cool was the Gyver itself, but that was because it's more a suit of armor than a monster (no mouth or facial features to articulate). Not only were the monsters fake looking but just about every other special effect from the gory to the sci-fi types looked fake. Stan Winston must be shaking his head in disbelief on how bad they did this.
The story is about as fake as the monsters and special effects. While the premise itself isn't all that bad the execution stinks to high heaven. The way the script is written with a kid's show mentality with lots of comedy relief and stupid dialog between creatures. The villains are as cartoonish as the script. I mean how seriously is a movie supposed to be taken when you have a monster voiced by Good Times' own Jimmy Walker (Dynomite!!!)? For those of you who never seen the cartoon it's essentially about the Gyver fighting monsters hand to hand. They do that here, but the fight scenes are immensely weak. You would think they could at least get that part right (don't bother telling me to blame the suits... they did it with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles years before). The acting is actually serviceable from many of the actors. Mark Hamill does help put at least a little respectability to the movie, but not nearly enough. The music is as cheesy as the costumes and script, so I guess it actually fits with this film.
They should have just made this some sort of kids movie instead of trying to make it for mature audiences like they did, because there is no way a self-respecting adult can find any merit to watch this. If they toned down the violence and adult content it could have actually been a decent kiddy flick. As it stands The Gyver is a joke in the poorest order. If you are a fan of the cartoon series I recommend you stay away at all costs as this movie is a travesty to the show where it came from. As a matter of fact the rest of you avoid this too. The only people I can recommend this to are those of you who actually likes watching cheesy movies to make fun of the cheesiness. Because that's just about all you get in this dismally bad idea.
Bad ... "Watchable Bad" though.......2005-11-07
I just want to be as clear as humanly possible. This is NOT a good movie by any standards. The actings awful, the script is terrible, the costumes are goofy looking, the score and music are low-rent. The whole film's production value was somewhere around an above-average 'Power Rangers' episode.
Having said all of that, this is a rare instance where the film not only accepts its cheesyness but seems to embrace it. I was actually suprised the production team didn't try and get a PG rating. It would have made a good post-Saturday morning cartoon movie.
If you were looking for a good 'B' movie to entertain yourself with, this fits the bill. Any movie with Jimmy "Dyn-No-Mite" Walker in it is always going to be entertaining on SOME level.
