5 out of 5 stars Finally - The Official MGM DVD Release! Great Film Noir!.......2007-06-03

For years Kansas City Confidential has languished in the Public Domain Hell. Released in a woefully substandard version from Alpha (watch the video wiggle at the bottom of the screen every 10 seconds), and a much better, but still flawed version from Image (the picure is just a bit too dark and has some minor print damage), along with several "dollar" DVD versions that were even more flawed than the Alpha and Image releases, Kansas City Confidential was a movie that most Film Noir fans thought would never see an "official" DVD release by MGM (owner of the master print, and - presumably - the negatives).

But here it is - MGM is actually releasing (or has released, depending on when you read this) the "official" DVD for this fantastic Film Noir. Based on their track record of releasing official versions of movies previously relegated to public domain releases (see He Walked By Night as an example - MGM's DVD is flawless!), this should see a drastic improvement in both image and sound quality over all of the previous versions released to date.

The movie itself is a tightly written, well acted (John Payne is fantastic, and the supporting cast of Preson Foster, Lee Van Cleef, Neville Brand, Jack Elam, and Coleen Gray are all near perfect in their roles), and extremely well directed by Phil Karlson. The cinematography by George E. Diskant should also get special mention, as Kansas City Confidential has the classic look of Film Noir.

This is a classic crime/wrong man framed and sets out for revenge movie. For fans of Film Noir this is truly a, "Must Have," DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cops and robbers movie.!!.......2007-04-29

Stars John Payne as a flower deliveryman who is set up as a fall guy for a robbery planned by disgruntled cop Preston Foster. Released from police custody for lack of evidence, Payne follows leads to Mexico where he uncovers the real criminals. Very good performances all round and a classic "cops & robbers" movie. Excellent!!

3 out of 5 stars A good example of what second-feature B movies were all about: Not too bad, not too good........2006-11-26

Is Kansas City Confidential a noir? Some critics think so. Some have even gone so far as to praise the movie. For me, the film is just one more B-level programmer, churned out in the thousands during the Forties and early Fifties to fill out double bills. The one thing it has going for it is a clever plot idea that combines a crime caper with a resentful Mr. Big who disliked being placed on forced retirement. Is that enough to take the premise seriously? I don't think so, but the way the payback for the retirement is planned and carried out isn't bad.

The movie turns on two plot pivots. First is a bank heist. Three tough guys are recruited by Mr. Big, who wears a mask. He makes the others wear masks, too. Only Mr. Big knows who everyone is. Their getaway leaves behind an innocent patsy, Joe Rolfe (John Payne), a war hero who once got in trouble with the law. After the Kansas City police try to beat a confession out of him, they realize they have the wrong man and let him go. Joe gets mad and decides to track the robbers down.

The second pivot centers on a small Mexican resort village where Mr. Big and the three accomplices have gathered, months later, to split the loot. Joe has taken the identity of one of them, Pete Harris. Joe had tracked Harris down and was forcing him to go together to the resort. By coincidence, Harris was gunned down by police at the Tijuana airport while Joe was at the ticket counter. Complicating things is Tim Foster (Preston Foster), a retired police captain from Kansas City who likes to fish, and his daughter, Helen (Coleen Gray). Helen, soon to pass her bar exam, showed up unexpectedly to visit her father. We're often reminded that there is a substantial reward for whoever captures the crooks and finds the money. There are beatings, slappings, double crosses, cold-blooded murder, noble sacrifice and a promised happy ending for Joe and Helen. A lot goes on, but it's something of a slog to get to Joe's and Helen's big kiss.

Second bill programmers were most often noted for only adequate acting, workmanlike but often clunky scripts, music scores that telegraphed what we were supposed to be feeling and the barest budgets the studios could get away with. This didn't mean that the movies were bad, just that there needed to be something -- an occasional standout script, or a solid actor, or an unusual concept or mood -- to make the movie worth remembering. With Kansas City Confidential we have, to my way of thinking, just two things that stand out. First, is that clever plot idea. Second, are the actors who play the three goons recruited by Mr. Big. There's Neville Brand playing Boyd Kane. Kane is dumb and violent. Brand's tough features and rough voice make him believable. There's Lee Van Cleef as Tony Romano, smooth and sleazy...not a guy you'd want to leave your daughter alone with. And there's Jack Elam as Pete Harris, a sweaty chain smoker, a squirming coward unless he's holding the gun. With Harris, you can almost smell his cigarette breath and body odor. Elam really does a fine job. But then we have John Payne as the hero. Payne, in my opinion, was a handsome, colorless, reactive actor. He acts tough, but it's as phony as Robert Stack acting tough in House of Bamboo. While I doubt even Bogart or Cagney could do much with lines like this, "I know a sure cure for a nosebleed: a cold knife in the middle of the back," Payne just looks irritable when he says it. Coleen Gray doesn't help much; her job is to be perky and sympathetic, almost in spite of the dialogue: Says Joe Rolfe, "Look, you're a nice girl, but in case you're thinking of mothering me, forget it! I'm no stray dog you can pick up, and I like my neck without a collar. Now get lost!" Says Helen, "Now I'm supposed to be hurt. Maybe even cry. But I won't. I think you're in trouble, and I'm going to help you!"

My advice: Watch it and learn what programmers were about. You might find you like it well enough. The film is in the public domain. The Image version is so-so; too dark and with too much contrast. It's not as bad as some public domain releases are. There are a few extras, including a cream-puff interview with Coleen Gray by noir specialist Eddie Muller. He also provides liner notes for an insert in the DVD case.

5 out of 5 stars I have to echo these other positive reviews.......2006-10-09

I have to throw my two cents in along with some of the other reviewers. Kansas City Confidential is one of the finest examples of gum shoe film noir I can think of. As a noir fan and collector, I have seen hundreds of films of this nature. Kansas City Confidential is one of the handful of films I watch over and over again. If you are a fan of film noir, and this fantastic film has not yet made it into your collection, BUY IT NOW !!! You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars "You been giving me the fisheye all night.".......2006-04-29

Revenge fueled noir about a police chief forced into an early retirement who nearly gets away with the perfect crime. Using masks all the time to conceal their identities, even from each other, he recruits three tough guys (Neville Brand, Jack Elam and Lee Van Cleef!) to help him rob an armored car using a fake florist delivery van. That way the driver of the real florist van (John Payne) will initially get blamed for the robbery.

They go through with the plan and it goes off without a hitch, now they split up with the intention to meet up at a later date to divide the money, and at this later meeting the ex-cop will bust `em and get the $300,000 reward. Only problem is he didn't guess just how pissed off the fall guy would be. Once freed, but not before the cops clobber him all over the joint, he hunts down the bad guys and let `em have it. "Thanks - FOR NOTHING!"

Some of the scenes are a little cheesy with the tough guy stuff and the final scene is too soft, but those fight scenes were riveting. I especially enjoyed Van Cleef.

The DVD by Alpha Video has a rough looking picture and no extras, but hey is 8 bucks so what do you expect?

IF YOU ARE A TOM SELLECK MOVIE FAN THIS IS ONE GREAT PERFORMANCE OF HIS AND WITH CO STAR F. MURRAY ABERHAM HELPS HIM CARRY THE HEAVY PERFORMANCE. HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO SELLECK FANS

5 out of 5 stars Edge of Your Seat Thriller!.......2007-05-30

This movie is good because of the star and it keeps you on the edge of your seat because you don't know what will happen next. It shows that with determination that things will work out if you don't give up. It shows that bad policemen do pay the price for being on the wrong side of the law.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable, but entertaining........2007-05-03

This is one of those, "it ain't great, but I liked it" movies. This is a formulaic movie, loaded with cliches and stereotypes, but without a great script to carry it. Unlike the superior "Shawshank Redemptions" of the world, it's not hard to figure out where this movie is going. That plus this one has more of a made for TV feel to it. Nevertheless, and the simplified vision of prison life aside, I liked this movie. The acting leaves a lot to be desired, but you can only use what your writers give you, and this cast makes the most out of it. Selleck is, well, Selleck. And Abraham is probably the best in his role of the wise, hip, independent, fellow inmate. But even that role is somewhat thin. Thin but fun. You know from the start how this one's gonna end up. The cast is too over the top to not to give it away. But it's still fun to watch unfold, as all the various roles get what the genre has coming to them. I can't remember the last time I saw Laila Robins, who plays Selleck's wife in this. She's an understated doll. If nothing else, this is an entertaining movie.

3 out of 5 stars In Peter Yates' film, bad cops become dangerous predators..........2007-01-02

The film opens with sequences conceived to present Selleck as a loving husband and a devoted airlines maintenance supervisor... His name is Jimmie Rainwood...

One night, a couple of crooked narcotics cops break down Rainwood's peaceful door...

Jimmy--who had just taken a shower--comes out with a hair dryer in his hand... He is shot twice by the anti-drugs cops who have caught a shadow of what looks like a gun... So to justify their error, they concocted an entire fairy tale planting drugs in Jimmy's home and a gun in his hand...

Rainwood ends up in jail...

Luckily, he is befriended by Virgil Cane, played by F. Murray Abraham... Cane was the character to keep your eye on... He is a 'schemer and a charmer.'

Virgil disagrees with Jimmy's sensitiveness as a straight man... This is an 'insane place with insane rules' that tests the human consciousness, yet survival will never be the same without some sort of sacrifice... A group of degenerate prisoners make life unbearable for Jimmy until he learns how to really fight back...

The film had its fair share of bloody moments and did not shy away from the nasty things that go on in men's prisons...

5 out of 5 stars Take Tom Selleck seriously........2006-09-25

At last, those of you who think that Tom Selleck is type-cast as either a cowboy or in a comedy role, will surely change your mind after watching this movie. He is absolutely terrific in this dramatic role, paving the way for his later movies, all of which have been thrillers/dramas. I have always loved the man, to the point where I used to holiday in Hawaii every year in the hope of meeting him, but this movie has made even me step back in awe. Well done Tom.

"F/X" is Hollywood-speak for "special effects," those often-bloody tricks that fool us into believing a gun has been fired or a head has been blown off. Bryan Brown plays a freelance effects wizard who arrives for each job fully equipped in a customized truck, making it easy for him to roll from one gig into the next. Accepting a hefty chunk of change for one such job, Brown stages the death of a gangster for the Witness Protection Program. At least, that is what he is led to believe. Illusion, it turns out, is everything. Not knowing whom to trust or what to think, Brown soon finds himself playing a vicious game of cat and mouse with the bad guys. What gives this an added thrill is that Brown is not sure exactly who is the villain in his own personal mystery movie. It could be the gangster (Jerry Orbach), the government agents, or the police officer (Brian Dennehy) with whom he joins forces. Evenly paced and surprisingly cunning, this is will leave you guessing until the last squib has been fired. Brown and Dennehy were reunited less successfully in the 1991 sequel, F/X2. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

In this riveting, high-energy suspense thriller, special effects wizard Rollie Tyler (Brian Brown) is enlisted by the Justice Department to stage what will be the most elaborate assignment of his lifetime--if it doesn't kill him first!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The deadly art of illusion.......2006-03-17

This is a movie we watch over and over.
The scenario is about a special effects expert in the movie field who is asked to "fake" a murder to protect a witness until time for the trial.
Then, he is asked to do the shooting.
Here you have suspense, action, and adventure.
A good 'un

4 out of 5 stars Suspending disbelief.......2006-02-18

F/X is exciting, entertaining, but only semi-credible. We are expected to believe a man can penetrate a guarded, walled estate, lug a huge amount of equipment into a mansion and, without knowing the layout, lug all of this equipment to an upstairs room without ever being detected. Houdini couldn't have managed that.
There are other things that one must not look at too closely (like wearing a rubber mask of someone's face, speaking in it without a guard noticing that this is a mask).
If we look beyond these flaws, the film is enjoyable. Just don't take it too seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Is it illusion or is it reality?.......2005-12-21

F/X is a dual story. The first is a behind the scenes look at movie magic (or special effects). The second is a political thriller.

Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown) is a special effects wizard. He is the greatest in the business, not only with special effects but with make-up effects. The Justice Department needs to fake the death of an informant (Jerry Orbach). They approach Rollie to stage the fake death. Rollie cannot resist.

Everything goes off without a hitch except the police are treating it as a real murder and Rollie as the killer. The manhunt begins and Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) is in charge of it. Rollie avoids Leo through guile and special effects. But things change when someone tries to kill Rollie.

Eventually, Leo realizes that Rollie is being set up and he teams up with Rollie to solve what really happened. This is when the film shifts into high gear.

This was one of the best films of the year with two outstanding performances by Brown and Dennehy. This film will keep you on the edge of the seat.

Of course the movie deserves 4 stars, however I wish I could say the same for the DVD. What does it take for DVD company to release each DVD enhanced for 16x9 TVs? Nothing!

Recently I bought a SONY BRAVIA 32 INCH display and I have a collection of over 600 Dvds. I learned now about "Enhanced for 16x9 TVs" and how important it is, I did not care about it or even know about it since I own a standard TV, however all my Dvds are Region 1 and in widescreen, I never buy fullscreen Dvds. So I did an inventory on my collection and realized the following:

Out of 600+ Dvds, 42 are NOT enhanced for 16x9 TVs and they really look horrible when I played them on my PC. Anyway, according to my inventory.
THE FOLLOWING MOVIES / COMPANY HAVE FAILED TO PRODUCE ANAMORPHIC OR 16X9 WIDESCREEN and I hope that these company will release them in the near future so that we can enjoy them on our TVs.

I finally got too see this, after my friends recommendations. Liked it a lot. Very well done, if you like the mechanical, special effects things!

Perhaps, just maybe it could have been made more realistic. By having the hero having problems with his setups, and then repairing them. Instead of everything seeming to work great. Implausible to anyone whose tinkered with gear like that.

This notorious Canadian sexploitation cult classic is one of the most sick and sadistic features ever released to a general audience, and the only film that producer David F. Friedman, the king of sleaze himself, was so ashamed of that he removed his name from it. Statuesque, buxom blonde Dyanne Thorne is Ilsa, the ruthless commandant of a Nazi medical camp who subjects her patients (mostly naked women) through the most painful and brutal tortures she can think of to prove the superiority of the female sex to Nazi high command. At night she goes through the male prisoners like boy toys to be discarded and castrated the next day ("Once a prisoner has slept with me, he'll never sleep with another woman!"), until she meets a man she can't conquer in bed. It proves to be her downfall. Vamping it up with a corny German growl, Thorne leers with gargoylish delight at her latest diabolical tortures: grotesque, gangrenous infections, exploding sex toys, boiling alive, and a dinner centerpiece involving a naked girl, a noose, and a melting block of ice that leaves her dangling by meal's end. Directed with an artless bluntness and a cold cynicism, it's a brutal, nasty film, utterly tasteless yet perversely fascinating. It was reportedly shot in a week on sets left over from the sitcom Hogan's Heroes, and proved so successful that it spawned two official and one unofficial sequels.

Anchor Bay's restored print is letterboxed and reportedly restored. The DVD edition also features commentary by Thorne, producer Friedman, and director Don Edmunds, moderated by humorist Martin Lewis. --Sean Axmaker

strutting in jack-boots and brandishing her swagger stick as she eyeballs her male and female prisoners is quite stunning.
If you are a fan of campy, 70's style movies with aggresive and dominant
female leads, then this is a movie for you!
Loosely based on history, (I don't believe there was ever a NAZI woman commander of a coed prisoner of war camp during WW2--at least not as alluring as she),
this is an evidently ridiculous, but unique, interesting, exciting and aroussing film.
Definately over the top for moral values of 1974, today it comes across as comical and satirical in its overt splendour of sexplotation.
Yes, there are scenes of torture, however the blood and gore is so unreal that is allows
the viewer to watch in curiousity, not revulsion. For a man, the scene of castration and Ilsa cutting off a man's
genitals, who failed to please her sexually, generates a queasy feeling though!
Overall, a film to have for 'supers-schlok cinema' value and one to watch when you
need a fix for a very attractive, dominant female as an antagonist against your senses of complacency!
The fact that it is filmed on the then vintage set of the 1960's series Hogan's Heroes,
gives it that mystifying allure, harkening back to the old war themes of good against
evil:
And, Dyanne Thorne as the character Ilsa, is pure evil--but she's purely 'one hell of a good' sight for
sore eyes!

3 out of 5 stars More Nazi death camp fun.......2006-08-25

Granted, I wasn't expecting much when I saw this but it does have a certain charm. It's not historically accurate, a few of the actors and the producer had their names changed, most of the female cast spends a majority of the time undressed and it looks like it was shot between takes of Hogan's Heroes.

Dyanne Thorne as Ilsa gives the only enthusiastic performance and manages to stay in character thoughout, reminding me of Jeffrey Combs' performance in Re-Animator. She was about 42 when she did this and looked great. The rest of the cast just stands there and tries not to look stupid, although Uschi Digard does make a spectacular uncredited cameo appearance dying in a pressure chamber.

Supposedly Ilsa sparked some controversy when it was released in 1974, but it seems doubtful since it only played in grindhouses and drive-ins. It did lucrative business spawning a few inferior sequals that were much tamer. An exploitation "classic" that really does get better after consuming several beers.

5 out of 5 stars My type of Women .......2006-06-22

A few years ago I dated (L.V.) a beautiful sexy bisexual girl. We met at my job and it was fatal attraction for us. She was in excellent shape and a sadistic bitch. She had won the women prize for being one of the best athletic competitors in Florida. Apart from our intimate relationship, she was a great friend; her favorite movies were the Ilsa movies. It was an experience I will never forget! These movies are the best for the imagination and fantasies that you can create. She introduced me to the Ilsa collection series, I introduced her to "A Clockwork Orange" (movie from 70's) we had so much fun together. We had a lot in common too. I will not tell you any more about the movies, check it out for yourself. But keep in mind it's only for adults, keep the children away from it and enjoy it with your partner. Remember it's only a movie for entertainment purposes. Do not get offended.
This movie is excellent! Also checkout "Ilsa- The wicked Warden" all her movies are great. I disagree with the other reviewers who say that it's a sick movie. I gave it five stars because it deserves it!

5 out of 5 stars ...Best Academy Award Winning Romanic Comedy.......2006-03-21

I think too many people gave this movie a serious review, I mean come on, its ILSA, SHE WOLF OF THE SS. The title just smacks of tastelessness. A softcore porn/exploitation film set in a Nazi camp, lets meet our heroes: There is of course the She Wolf, Ilsa who when not torturing various women and castrating male prisoners that fail to satisfy her, struts around in her stylin nazi boots barking with a fake German accent. She predictably falls for this American (Wolfe) because he can hold off orgasm indefinitely and has blond hair. Then there is Anna, a rebellious brunette who refuses to have her spirit broken by Ilsa. Ilsa spends a lot of time torturing Anna and screwing the American. When not having sex with Ilsa Wolfe is plotting the escape of the prisoners with Mario who is this Italian guy that seems like he was teleported in from a grade B romance film. Mario wears the same stoic expression throughout the movie, even as he dies at the end.
There are other characters than this, I just don't care about them.
I appreciate some of the loving details in this movie, like the fake blood that looks like red paint, random shots that have a picture of Hitler in the background and of course the music. When it doesn't sound like a high school band did the soundtrack they pasted in bits of real German music including little kids singing at the end. Oh and lets not forget the death/torture scenes, some are quite inventive thought not as inventive as say...Cube Zero! Though she is over forty the busty Ilsa manages to exude a kind of sadistic sexiness which makes the character even funnier. Somehow this movie wasn't that bad to me, I mean bad taste yes, low budget yes, but it is a good film for what it is. (whatever that may be) On one Listmania this movie was under "TRASH: You will learn to eat garbage like a dog and poop shiny lumps of gold" If you are stupid enough to drop acid while watching this you might do just that.
I spent most of my time watching it laughing like a hyena and eating hamburger helper. Shame on you some would say, for laughing at nazi war crimes! my answer to that would be why cant we treat a subject as serious as this with humor (albeit tasteless) without it I think we would give the nazis more dignity than they deserve.

3 out of 5 stars DID NOT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE........2005-11-18

I was diappointed with the film. All he good reviews got me to expect something else. The onlything it did live up to was the amount of naked flesh. It seemed that all the girls were naked having sex or being tortured.

The sex has been better in other movies. And the torture, it fell sort too. I think the film relied on too much shock value instead of realism for the torture.

You got to give the director credit. They were making a explotation film and that is what he gave the viewers. Why else would you have half naked women whipping prisoners.

I gave this 3 stars instead of 2 because of the time they made this film, it was up to expectations of the 70's. Then again, there was a lot of funny tabbacco being smoked back then too.

      4 out of 5 stars Enjoyably comedic.......2006-02-10

Though Hitchcock is no stranger to comedy in his films, this film strikes a particular resonance in that it is a lot more slapstick, a lot more oddball, and just overall a lot more funny than most of his films. Depending on what you think of his films (and it's probably that he's a master of the form and that all his films are amazing, because that's what everyone thinks), this might be interesting or... it might not. Why not Hitchcock take a comedic approach? Hitchcock is God!

Okay, what am I saying? Anyway, this film has the usual collection of circumstances... a man on the run, wrongfully accused of a crime... a blond who gets involved with him but also has to deal with her own dilemmas beyond his de jure guilt... birds... suspense... but it's all a lot more light-handed and airy, with a lot more emphasis on fate and chance that makes it funnier than serious. As the characters go on their oddball romp through the world, it's in a way a lot more interesting to watch their various chance encounters than to get caught up in the common man who is wrongfully accused of something. I'm not saying Hitchcock's other work is bad, I'm just saying it's nice to have this added in as well.

It's not quite as precise and formed as a lot of his other work, but it still maintains a high level of discipline and still is a well-crafted piece of work. Definitely enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars The Girl is Young.......2005-11-02

One of Alfred Hitchcock's early British films, YOUNG AND INNOCENT is fairly light and innocent itself, but its theme is one that would be revisited many times by Hitchcock: an innocent man is accused of a brutal murder and must go on the run to prove his innocence. It is no secret that Hitchcock himself harbored a healthy mistrust, even dislike of the police, and this is one of the earliest of his many films in which a police investigation is misguided and it is ultimately up to his endangered protagonist to solve the case at hand.

Derrick De Marney plays the young man, Robert Tisdall, who stands accused of the vile crime and Nova Pilbeam plays the daughter of the local police constable. She first falls into reluctantly aiding the boy and, ultimately, she falls in love with him. Just three years earlier, Pilbeam had played the abducted child role in Hitchcock's first version of THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH; she is playing her first adult role here and is quite effective as the resourceful young woman Erica.

YOUNG AND INNOCENT is a charming film about a young romance, albeit in the unexpected setting of a fugitive hunt. De Marney and Pilbeam can't help but be extremely likeable in their roles. The plot holds sufficient interest to keep a modern audience engaged throughout the film and the outcome of the film is, of course, satisfying.

Hitchcock's movie-making craft is in full maturity in this film. Apart from the aforementioned plot elements which would become the staple of his work, Hitchcock's camera work in YOUNG AND INNOCENT is innovative and effective and, as he has explained, "[substitutes] the language of the camera for dialogue," a skill for which he was later much renowned.

Look for Hitchcock's bit part in YOUNG AND INNOCENT as he plays a press photographer fumbling with his camera in one of his most amusing cameos. Anyone who has a passing interest in the films of Alfred Hitchcock owes it to himself or herself to check out the British films that he made prior to 1940. YOUNG AND INNOCENT is one of the best representatives from that body of work.

5 out of 5 stars A Charming Mystery and Romance.......2005-10-04

While rarely mentioned in the same breath with "The 39 Steps" or "The Lady Vanishes," this is my favorite film from Hitchcock's British film catalog. It has charm, a great story, lots of atmosphere, a fine romance, and best of all, the wonderful Nova Pilbeam. Based on a Josephine Tey novel, "A Schilling For Candles," this story of an innocent man wrongly accused of murder and the young girl who aids his search for proof that he did not commit the crime is a ton of fun.

This is a top-notch British production from the period. There is good photography from Bernard Knowles and a nice score from Louis Levy to make this one of Hitchcock's most enjoyable outings. Nova Pilbeam was a lovely young British actress who had worked for the director in a smaller role three years earlier, in his first version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much." She sparkles here as a strong and independent young heroine who comes to believe in someone and risks everything to aid him.

Derrick De Marney also shines as a young writer named Robert who happens upon the body of famous cinema star, Christine Clay (Pamela Carme), washed up on the beach. He had a passing acquaintance with her since she had purchased one of his stories. He is seen running from the scene to get help, and when it is discovered she was strangled with a belt from a coat he had stolen from him at a place called Tom's Hat, things don't look good for our hero.

It looks even worse that she left 1,200 pounds to him in her will, and when his attorney appears to be a boob, Robert escapes in order to prove his innocence. He gets the reluctant help of the Chief Constaple's daughter, Erica Burgoyne (Nova Pilbeam), in escaping to an old mill for the night, taking the chance she will not turn him in to her father. There is a romantic attraction between the two, and the independent young Erica decides she must help him a little to avoid the gallows.

When she comes to bring him food and drive him around to search for the man who stole the jacket which will prove his innocence, she and her little dog get in deeper and deeper. There finally comes a turning point when Erica throws caution to the wind and zealously helps Robert pursue the man with a twitch in his eye who murdered Christine Clay. It becomes apparent to both her father and the police that she is aiding him willingly and not under duress. Since they have already slipped up and aroused suspicions at a birthday party her aunt and uncle were thowing for her niece, they know they can not remain at large forever and it becomes a race with time to find the real killer.

There is a very nice atmosphere of an English coastal town in the 1930's and all the trademark Hitchcock elements are here as well. This is one of the great Hitchcock films from his British period and stands with the best of them. Nova Pilbeam is terrific here and it is almost a shame she did not get to make more films like this one. If you enjoyed "The 39 Steps" you will probably like this as well. It does not quite have the tension of that great film but has a little more romance and charm. A real winner!

Alfred Hitchcock's 1929 remake of the 1916 U.K. drama The Manxman is no picnic: lives are destroyed, careers ruined, and hopes dashed. One of the director's harshest works, this silent film concerns two old school chums on the Isle of Man, Pete (Carl Brisson) and Phil (Malcolm Keen), who both love the same woman, Kate (Anny Ondra). Phil has been reared and educated to become an aristocrat--a successful lawyer and eventual judge. Pete, by contrast, is happy as a fisherman but cannot win Kate until he earns his fortune. (He also doesn't know how Phil really feels about his girl.) When word comes that Pete has died overseas, Phil and Kate consummate their passion, only to find that the news of their friend's demise has been greatly exaggerated. What follows is a doomed effort by the lovers to paper over what they've done: Pete marries Kate, all right, but Kate and Phil's deception not only doesn't go away, it just gets deeper. Hitchcock explores, though not too subtly, his developing preoccupation with shared guilt and secret selves, and he layers in strong hints of ever-deepening motivation behind so much self-destruction. (A suggestion that blue-blooded Phil is really using the barmaid Kate as a shield against his destiny is not only provocative but amplifies the tragedy.) Much of the film is set-bound, but there are also astonishing moments of Hitchcock working out early versions of visual ideas fulfilled up to 30 years later in such films as North by Northwest and Psycho. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Era of Silent Hitchock Film.......2003-02-12

This is a tragic, woeful tale! Do not expect to leave this film unscathed by the brutal knife edge of Hitchcock. He wields the weapon of suspense and trauma even here, so very early in his career.

We are also introduced to the fine actor, Carl Brisson. His performance alone garners the worth of four stars. Each facial expression, every gesticulation is worth a thousand words in the medium of silent film, and Mr. Brisson flawlessly provides them all. He is, essentially, the backbone of this dreadully long, droll, tragedy.

You'll notice the pacing and editing of the movie are frustrating, however, in its entirety, i still believe this film works. It's a Lily in Winter: rare, rare, rare. I only wish Mr. Brisson had produced more than three films before his untimely (and early) death.

And you'll want this as a reminder that the fruits of Hitchcocks genius were in the larval stages and just absolutely fascinating to watch.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Value for Hitchcock Fans.......2001-08-30

These DVDs (and The AH Collection II) are quite a good value. Iým a big Hitchcock fan, and before I bought them I had only seen cheapo VHS versions of a few of the movies (except for The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps, of which I had the Criterion editions). Anyway, I got the two box sets here on Amazon (theyýre also now available in one big set with 14 DVDs), and Iýve watched through all of them.
The first thing you need to know, and then promptly forget about, is that Tony Curtis provides an introduction to each DVD, and man is it brutal! There are a lot of pictures that were publicity stills for his later movies or his TV series, and Tony says things like, ýHitch liked to shock people. You know what itýs like when you have a good twist at the end of a film? Hitch had a lot of those. Shocking!ý His comments rarely relate to the movie. Anyway, I watched all the intros, but it was painful.
Several of the DVDs also have trailers for later Hitchcock films, all in horrible condition. Which makes the transfers of the actual movies all that much better, since theyýre quite acceptable. The worst transfer is the earliest film, The Lodger, and the worst movies are The Manxman and Easy Virtue. Besides that, it was a pleasure watching them. None of the films are at the level of the two Criterion releases, and there are certainly lines and scratches throughout, but you can enjoy them. The sound is generally okayývery little screeching as I recall from the VHS copies Iýve seen. Thereýs really no bass response at all, but thereýs not a whole lot of scratching either.
I think (a) except for the two Criterion ones, theyýre the best copies out there, (b) if youýre a Hitchcock fan, theyýre required viewing and you wonýt be disappointed in the movies themselves, and (c) at about $... a DVD, and with three or so of the discs containing a second, silent film (none of the silents stand alone on a DVD) and two of the discs containing an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (in probably the worst condition youýve ever seen them, especially if youýve been spoiled by the Universal-released episodes), theyýre a tremendous bargain.
Note, these arenýt all of Hitchcockýs early movies. Several, such as Champagne and Juno and the Paycock, arenýt out on DVD at all. Also note that these arenýt all mystery/suspense films. The Farmerýs Wife is a comedy, The Ring is a boxing/love story, Easy Virtue, Skin Game, and The Manxman are melodramas, and Jamaica Inn is a period piece. But itýs neat to finish one of these and then watch, say, The 39 Steps and see an early glimpse into the director Hitch would later become.
One painful caveat: The Farmerýs Wife, a silent comedy, was quite entertaining, but it was also nearly an hour longer than its 97-minute listed running time. Everytime I thought the farmer would finally choose a wife, another plot twist came up. After 2+ hours I started to consider hitting the FF button. I read somewhere that itýs a common error in silent films to have them run at the wrong speed--unfortunately this one runs too slow. If you can forego the music, Iýd consider watching it in a slight fast forward mode!

1 out of 5 stars Wait for the new Hitchcock releases........2001-07-21

These DVDs are "Laserlight" releases which mean that they have very poor quality picture and sound.Wait for the new Hitchcock Box sets which have clear picture and sound plus documentaries and other extras. The superb Criterion versions are also a good choice. If it's introduced by Tony Curtis, then it's Laserlight, avoid it!

4 out of 5 stars Half wonderful, all of great historical interest.......2000-12-02

Note: this review refers to the 14-DVD boxed set and not just to Volume 1.

No film buff and certainly no film major should be without the boxed set of 14 DVDs that Laserlight has issued under the umbrella title of . The DVDs are organized in no particular order, some containing only one film, some two, while two of them have a full film and an episode from the old "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series of the 1950s. They all have a trailer of more recent Hitchcock films and they all have an embarrassingly bad introduction by Tony Curtis, whose connection with these films and with English enunciation is vague at best.

The gems of the collection are "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934), "The 39 Steps" (1935) and "The Lady Vanishes" (1939). Of the earlier talkies, "Young and Innocent" has the quintessential plot of an innocent man and a girl who somehow winds up with him being chased by the police. "Rich and Strange" (1932) is not a thriller but has a shivery sequence as a couple on a sinking boat sees the water seeping into their cabin--just before it stops sinking.

"Jamaica Inn" (1939) has an over the top performance by Charles Laughton (whose dialogue is hard to follow even on this restored version) and the first appearance of Maureen O'Hara. And for once, Robert Newton plays the Good Guy. "Sabotage" (1936) is based on a Joseph Conrad tale and has the famous scene of the boy on a bus with a bomb on his lap. (Later, Hitchcock commented he should not have let it go off.) "Secret Agent" (1936) gives us a young John Gielgud as a spy who kills the wrong man, Peter Lorre in a very bizarre role (helped or hindered by his drug-taking on and off the set), and the suavest villain of them all--Robert Young!

"Number 17" (1932) is one of the films Hitchcock did not want to film, and he gave us a great spoof on the genre of the spooky houses, diamond smugglers, and derring-do. "Murder" (1930) boasts a super cool Herbert Marshall as a jurist who reluctantly says guilty at a woman's murder trial and then spends the rest of the film proving her innocent.

More fascinating is "Blackmail" (1929), which existed in silent and talking versions. We have the latter and the often commented upon scene in which Hitchcock plays with the soundtrack so that only the word "knife" can be heard during the last part of a long monologue. Another trick he was forced into was the use of a British actress reading out the lines of the foreign-born heroine.

"The Skin Game" (1931) is weakest of the talkies included in this set; and indeed the dialogue is almost impossible to understand.

Of the silents, "The Lodger" (1927) is in the worst shape but it shows very clearly the influence of the silent German film on Hitchcock's early (and later) technique. Of course the long takes of a face staring into the camera are laughable today; but this is an historical document and demands a certain degree of detachment. "The Ring" (1927) does strain credibility, while it shows Hitchcock's love for show business of any sort, even circus freakshows and boxing.

"The Manxman" (1929) is slow and predictable with its love triangle, a misreported death, and the return of the husband. "Easy Virtue" (1927) is based on a Noel Coward play, which it follows only half way through the film, and shows a sympathetic view of the "woman with a past"--in this case, a divorce--together with a condemnation of those who cannot accept her. More Social Studies than good drama here.

However, "The Farmer's Wife" (1928) is quite funny once the somewhat jerky widower offers himself to three unlikely women while his housekeeper loves him in silence and has to assist him in his wooing spree.

One feature of these DVDs you will probably not need is the ability to hear the talkies in English, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese; or to subtitle the dialogue cards in the silents in the last three languages.

A strange feature of these DVDs is that they immediately take you into the film rather than into the menu. This should be changed in future printings.

So all in all, I would guess you would want to see some of the talkies many, many times, some of the silents less often, and some of them never again. But once more, this is a very valuable set for students and just plain lovers of film history, especially the part played in that history by Hitchcock.

        5 out of 5 stars Imperdible..........2000-09-25
