Paris When It Sizzles is an unusual screwball comedy to say the least. Whether it works is another matter, but the premise and humor are interesting enough to make it enjoyable. The basic problem with the film is its two stars: William Holden and Audrey Hepburn hardly sizzle with onscreen chemistry, and Hepburn's character, Miss Simpson, falls far too easily into the hands of Holden's drunken screen writer. However, the story is an interesting play on the typical Hollywood romance, with two plotlines running in parallel to each other. Holden's Richard Benson has only two days to finish a script for an enigmatic producer (Noel Coward). Hepburn's Miss Simpson is drafted in as the typist and as the script is dictated it manifests itself on the screen, allowing the two lead characters to play out any number of romantic stories. It's the cameo appearances in the imaginary world that really steal the show, with the blink-and-you'll-miss-it last screen appearance by Marlene Dietrich, as well as Tony Curtis having fun with his own screen persona. Not one of Hepburn or Holden's best, but worth a look purely for the interesting slant on the mechanical nature of Hollywood's romances. --Nikki Disney

Overly Broad Farce Doesn't Show Off Hepburn or Holden in the Best Light.......2007-04-08
Even though this 1964 comedy is not a complete misfire, this is not remotely my favorite movie of either Audrey Hepburn or William Holden. A decade after their initial coupling in Billy Wilder's class-conscious romantic soufflé, "Sabrina", the two stars are re-teamed under the far more heavy-handed direction of Richard Quine in an overly contrived, intermittently funny screenplay by George Axelrod. The result feels like the old-style French farce upon which it is based but with the artificial veneer of 1960's Hollywood studio product (even though it was filmed primarily on Paris sound stages). That's a shame since Hepburn and Holden can be game farceurs when properly motivated, but here they are unfortunately made to play more broadly than usual with an over-reliance on their screen personas.
The frothy plot centers on aging Hollywood screenwriter Richard Benson, who is holed up in Paris attempting to beat the deadline set forth by big-time producer Alexander Meyerheim to finish his latest screenplay. Benson has to hand in the completed script in two days, but the problem is that he hasn't even started since he has been busy boozing and womanizing in typical alpha-male fashion. He hires impressionable Gabrielle Simpson as his live-in secretary and becomes inspired to write the aptly named "The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower" (complete with an opening theme from Frank Sinatra). The rest of the movie goes back and forth between the reality of the impending deadline at Richard's apartment and the fantasy scenes of the screenplay coming to life.
There is no suspense as to how it will end, but it does have its charms with some silly spy-caper turns and cameo appearances by Marlene Dietrich in a walk-on, Noel Coward as Meyerheim, and a particularly amusing Tony Curtis as Gabrielle's Method-style actor boyfriend. At 110 minutes, the movie feels overlong, and the film is visually hamstrung by phony backdrops and studio sets typical of the period. Right between "Charade" and "My Fair Lady", Hepburn is never less than charming here, while Holden keeps his innate hamminess in check. However, neither seems especially challenged by the comic proceedings. The only extra on the 2001 DVD is the original theatrical trailer.
Spare Us While it Fizzles.......2007-04-08
I'm a big William Holden fan. For a major star of the late 40's and 50's he doesn't have a large stock of motion pictures playing the Late Show or TCM. Thus I watch 'em when I can and I figured "Paris When it Sizzles" would be at least an average Holden-quality movie. Unfortunately, it isn't; at least not by my standards.
The concept is interesting; a once great film writer has a deadline on a script the day after tommorrow and he hasn't even begun. A typist is sent to help him "finish" and after some romantic fencing, they get down to crunch time. Their hasty ideas appear before us on the screen in a wide range of false starts and repeats. Eventually, we have to ask ourselves if they finished their task or was "Paris When it Sizzles" their final script (with the "joke" being on us). Along the way, I found myself caring not so much HOW it was going to end so long as it DID end. Holden has that great glib voice of his but there wasn't much of note coming from it. In the interst of trying to find something positive to say, I'll spare my opinions of Audrey Hepburn. On the positive note, this was one of the best performances I've seen by Tony Curtis. His was the one character that, however briefly, managed to really crack me up.
I've alluded to it earlier and I'll close by stating it more directly; "Paris When it Sizzles" appears to me to be the result of a writer who had to put something together in two days while balancing that time with fun and games.
love it!.......2007-02-22
a diamond in the rough! very silly with lots of twists! you will enjoy it!
Paris When It Sizzles - Great Fun.......2007-01-25
Paris When It Sizzles follows a writer played by William Holden who has to get a script finished within two days. He gets the help of the lovely Audrey Hepburn. Together they digg deeply in their minds, making up the most ridicilous but oh so fun stories, as they try to succeed in completing a story they can deliver to the waiting movieproducer...
After being together on the screen in the romantic comedy Sabrina (1954), William Holden and Audrey Hepburn team up once again to bring a nice sixties comedy with Paris when it Sizzles. The chemistry between the two is nice and together they take you through the exciting world of movie writting. It is real fun to see how they come up with the most ridicilous stories. From Dracula to spies in trenchcoats, from planes to indians, it's all in their wonderful made up stories.
Considering the acting, the film is fine. William Holden was nicely cast as the writer Richard Benson. He plays the role with great enthusiasm and is also charming. With Audrey Hepburn you just can't go wrong. Even if the movie is bad, her charm makes you respect it. Her role in this film is pure fun as she also acts enthusiastic next to Holden. You can see that she had a lot of fun portraying her character.
They may react a bit unrealistic to one another sometimes, it is an absolute joy to see it. Especially as they play the main characters in their own stories with fun overreacted acting.
Another fun fact is that there are cameo roles of famous fifties and sixties moviestars in the film. If you watch alot of movies out of this period, you will be delightfully surprised by the familiar faces.
Also, the locations are colorful, the music is fun, which gives a great atmosphere and enjoyable 60's movie entertainment.
This film is definitely a must see for want to be future Writers. There is alot to learn from this film. But if you are just in search of some nice 60's fun on a boring night, I would recommend you this film also. Be surprised by the switch on a switch on a switch, and enjoy the funny comedic sizzling stories these two come up with.
Not Much Sizzle!.......2007-01-24
The premise of this plot is not bad, but the execution is labored and sometimes too off the wall. With a great starring cast it is a big disappointment.

Highly entertaining albeit thin journalism thriller, this examination of a 24-hour period in the life of a New York Post-ish tabloid focuses on a hard-working metro editor (a pitch-perfect Michael Keaton) thinking of going to a loftier job at a rival paper. Edgy, "NYC as the center of the universe" full of sweat and grit, the paper debates the hot story of the day: a racial shooting. Like most movies from Ron Howard's universe (Parenthood, Backdraft), it's always just a movie, full of dramatic, over-the-top setups instead of the genuine article. Still, the film has the feeling of being there, full of workman's vigor where "I'm on deadline" is the family motto. The cast is just right although the roles are stereotypical: the grizzled editor-in-chief (Robert Duvall) the cold female manager (Glenn Close), the slightly whacked-out ace columnist (Randy Quaid), and the rest. Each actor has choice moments in this movie that may turn fans on to the hectic side of journalism. --Doug Thomas

All of the actors gave a great performance; there was comedy in several spots, and we've watched the film several times. if you can't see it on HBO, buy the disk.
FUN MOVIE!.......2006-11-03
This is a FUN movie all around. It takes you into the life of print journalism and gets you involved into the everyday life of news writers and the stress they encounter on a day-to-day basis. Leading the way is Michael Keaton as the hot-shot news writer who's contemplating changing companies to further his status and make the extra buck. He's supported by a great cast of veteran actors who each have a distinct personality that you'll either love or hate. Now that's acting! The great thing about this movie is that it's set in real time like show's like 24 and whatnot. The whole movie is based on this one hectic day and how much of a rollercoaster it becomes.
...all the news that's print to fit..........2006-09-02
this is ron howard at his finest...this is michael keaton at his finest...this is film making, well, it ain't 'citizan kane', but, in a way, it does come close...i mean, think about it...the way the characters connect to each other, and, while 'kane' goes through a lifetime in one movie, these guys go thru one day in their lifetime...the writing is crisp, the acting is sharp, and, i can tell you from personal experience, having spent many a day 'putting more coal into the furnace', (as robert duvall's character says about the newspaper business), this film is prime for a 'slammer'!...is it any wonder that this is my favorite movie of all time...
no title.......2006-04-03
A very entertaining movie, with sit on the edge of your seat suspense. Done much like the old TV series "St Elsewhere", with the cutting back and forth between characters, that has become so popular today. In 1994 it was more cutting edge. "City of Hope" was also in this style, although with much more substance. A lot gets packed into 24 hours in the life of these people. I particularly enjoyed Randy Quaid's character here. Many of the others seemed to be playing types, rather than real people, but for this kind of script, with no pretensions of meaning, that's OK. It was action-packed, never a dull moment. I did thing Spalding Grey not good, as I think he has been in everything I've seen him in, which is odd, as his stage show was nothing short of fabulous. A great talent will be missed. Perhaps the film medium was just not suited to him. There was also a continuity break in the scene where Marisa Tomai is having a drink with some guy. Sometimes the lime slice is on her glass, sometimes not, the level of water keeps changing, and also the angle of the lime slice when it is there. And I think the reporter with back problems and his chair should have hit the cutting room floor.
Never let a good story get in the way of the truth!.......2006-03-27
This is probably not a masterpiece but it is a good film. It shows with some realism the hectic life journalism leads to. To be a journalist is to have a completely crazy life in which family, friends, regularity are dreams you cannot in any way respect or just entertain. That kind of atmosphere has already been shown and used in other films. But this film insists on the social, moral and human responsibility that a journalist must live for and with : never tell something that is not true if you know it is not true, in one word you must never lie. You might be wrong, misinformed or many other things but what you publish you must believe - and even know - it is the truth. Then to pair this fight for journalistic ethics to the birth of one's own son or child, is a marvellous idea. For a journalist it is the most important and most exhilarating fact in life to be told his or her article is the truth, especially if it enables two young black teenagers to be freed and exonerated from a false accusation. This kind of film should be shown to all our young people for them to learn that what is important in life is not money, nor what they believe in or think, but only what is true, and that a man must be absolutely free to tell the truth, all the truth, nothing but the truth.

The Movie
Here we have the Duke as a railroad man blasting tunnels thru a mountain. He falls for a weird rich mans daughter. Then all the drama begins. It takes a long time to get to it too. It is slow paced not edited well and not one of the dukes best films. That's not to say its bad it just doesn't move along and doesn't pull you into the story
The Video
The video is bright lots of color in full frame. It has some damage here and there but all in all a watch able print.
The Audio
Mono 1.0 no update which is a shame with all the dynamite it been nice to have a 5.1 mix too rattle the windows.
The Extras
Hollywood Wonderland
Sixteen minutes of a musical about Hollywood made in 1947. I am not sure what this has to do with the movie but its here it's a Disney like parade of music and dance with some cameos interesting once but like most extras never watched twice.
Red Hot Rangers
A Tex Avery cartoon with two bears trying to put out a forrest fire. Most of us have seen this one before but due to the smoking in the first scene it is not shown on regular tv anymore.
Summary
As for my collection of duke movies it is a most. For the casual fan it's a rent if u can find it. For six bucks though it is priced right. Frankly the cartoons better than the movie on this one.

Proving that a documentary can be both rigorous and stylish, Deadline delves into the hot-button topic of the death penalty, with particular focus on the 2002 investigation initiated by former Republican governor of Illinois, George H. Ryan, after an investigative journalism class at Northwestern University proved that three men on Illinois' death row were innocent. The current debate focuses not on the moral right-or-wrong of capital punishment, but on whether the legal system can keep an innocent man from being condemned to death. The debate is by no means simple, and Deadline presents a balanced picture, interviewing lawyers, anti-death penalty advocates, politicians, and men who've been released from death row, all of whom are lucid and articulate. But it's testimonies from victims that are the most emotionally wrenching--and you may be surprised by their statements. A superb documentary, directed by Katy Chevigny and Kisten Johnson. --Bret Fetzer
Description
What would you do if you discovered that 13 people slated for execution had been found innocent? That was exactly the question that Illinois Governor George Ryan faced in his final days in office. He alone was left to decide whether 167 death row inmates should live or die. In the riveting countdown to Ryan's decision, Deadline details the gripping drama of the state's clemency hearings. Documented as the events unfold, Deadline is a compelling look inside America's prisons, highlighting one man's unlikely and historic actions against the system.
DVD features will include: Interview with directors Katy Chevigny and Kirsten Johnson. Additional Scenes: Governor George Ryan's Clemency Speech, Interview with Governor George Ryan, Gabriel Solache and the Vienna Convention, Furman v. Georgia: Donald Schneble, Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation: Mamie Till Mobley, Governor Ryan and the Death Penalty, Filmmaker Biographies, Glossary of Terms, Internet Links.
Customer Reviews:
Must see if you believe in justice.......2006-01-08
I watched this video as I am an actor presently performing in "The Exonerated," an award-winning play on the same topic. Before learning more about the topic, I was very naive in understanding how arbitrarily the death penalty is imposed in our country. Everyone who believes in justice and humanity should see this video and then decide for yourself what a citizen should do about the situation. It reveals what is wrong with our system and gives the real stories of those who are at work in our society to improve the criminal justice system.
Eye-opening........2005-11-29
The United States prides itself in democratic ideals, but at the same time, it is also very hypocritical because of the actions it undertakes and its treatment of minorities and its policies in foreign countries. This documentary exposes the corrupt and unjust law system within the state of Illinois. It shows how the history of the death penalty in that state has been carried out in an unlawful and inhumane manner. In the end though, all the prisoners held on death row in that state are taken off death row.
Great documentary.......2005-09-17
Deadline is a great documentary about Gov Ryan's (R-IL) role when it took 160 inmates off death rows. The film goes into the death penalty's history and tries to show how it's flawed. Deadline will make you think about how reliable our justice system is.
An extremely well-crafted and thought provoking documentary.......2005-01-29
Deadline is a remarkably good documentary. It is thought provoking and emotionally wrenching. Early on, I found myself drawn in, torn, going back and forth with each new argument for or against the death penalty. That's the mark of a well constructed doc. It shakes you up, makes you think, and ultimately re-examine what it is that you believe. As we age and change, we can outgrow some of our values without fully realizing it. Works like Deadline stimulate introspection and the clarification of one's deepest values by asking questions like, "What is the function of the State? The Courts? The Legal System as a whole? As a community, how do we define such things as mercy, compassion, forgiveness? What is Justice? And what is the value we give to human life?"
There seems to be a resurgence in documentaries in the last few years and Deadline shows just how powerful this genre of film making can be. Thanks for keeping the bar set so high. Enjoy.
DEADLINE - a fascinating and exquisitely crafted film.......2004-12-28
I saw the documentary DEADLINE at the Somerville Theatre as part of the Independent Film Festival of Boston and I was riveted throughout this film. This is such a well-crafted documentary and such an engaging story, not to mention a highly important one. Even though the death penalty is a heavy subject, this film manages to keep the mood from being depressing and the film has high entertainment value.

One of two worthy purchases from the trilogy.......2006-07-12
Now that I've finally seen all three of Halicki's films I have concluded that the only ones worth purchasing to the average Halicki fan (as opposed to a hardcore fan) are Gone in 60 Seconds and Deadline Auto Theft and I'll tell you why. We all have to agree that pacing a chase film wasn't Halicki's top talent as all of his films can drag and move slowly even during the car chases, especially to new young fans like myself who have been raised under a higher standard for action films. This problem is only horribly bad in The Junkman which I view as just an overall boring movie (with the tiny exception of the Vette hitting the old woman) so skip that one. With the other two, Deadline is like a Gone remix with a lot of boring parts taken out and new scenes for some extra story added in. I guess you could say it was bored out. Hehehee. So in conclusion, Deadline is the one you watch and Gone is the one you keep as a collectors item.
This was an unfinished film, due to the fact H B Halicki dies while filming it........2006-06-04
Someone correct me if I am wrong, it is to my understanding that H B Halicki, the writer, star and director of Gone in sixty seconds 2, died during of all things a boat stunt while making this movie. It would be correct to reason; poor editing and use of footage from his other movies was due to the fact the writer, star and director(not to mention the $producer$) was DEAD! that could explain it.
Buy it to say you have them all, but don't take it out of the shrink wrap!.......2005-10-20
I own all of H.B. Halicki's films, mainly because I thought they were interesting projects, and the camera work was decent, although the production qualities left much to be desired, yet not bad considering the lower budget. I have always told people to see the original "Gone in 60 Seconds," in spite of the fact it isn't as glamourous (what would you rather have - a Shelby GT 500 or a '73 Mustang) as the Nicholas Cage remake. I think it is a better film. "The Junkman" was a film that really allowed us to see how Toby could do with more money. I think he did quite well, and thought it was neat that he incorporated the chase scene from "Deadline Auto Theft," and helped the actor plot along without wasting time on the next project. I really had my hopes up for the third film. Then I thought it was really swell that there was extra footage. I sat down to watch it, with the DTS surround track of course. At first, we all have to suffer through Denise Halicki's poorly rehearsed introduction where we watch her stumble over cue cards she never learned. Finally the movie starts. I thought it was pretty neat for the first ten minutes. I was looking forward to more. Then, suddenly we show up at Eugene's wedding. I then thought "He's getting married again." It seemed different because is was better edited than the original scene, but the same footage, with a new dialogue scene. Then the 40 cars are mentioned and I said, "Oh crap." Then it goes right into the original film. While that may not have been terrible, nothing fits. There are great differences in characters appearance. They look older in the dialogue, and the quality of the film hasn't deteriorated like the original Gone in 60 Seconds reels.
[...] Barely any of the first scene was shown in "The Junkman." This could not possibly be an attempt to show viewers the best of both films. THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FILMS. The characters have different names. I also have never heard of a millionaire Hollywood actor/Insurance investigator. In other words, that could not possibly be his intent.
After watching the film, I think he had a great thing planned, but money was a problem. As his widow says in the intro to the action sequences of the incredibly tacky "Gone in 60 Seconds 2," Toby always did the action sequences first and then the dialogue. He probably realized there was no way that he could make his great feature film, so he said, "lets redo the dialogue from the original, and stick it in replacing the original dialogue." The film was marketed as a legitimate film, not just a collection of the best from the first two films. Watch the trailer. It is something new according to him.
About the footage from "Gone in 60 Seconds 2"
I am very happy this film was not actually finished. It is not inventive and the action sequences aren't very original. About the Slicer, I HATE THAT THING! What made the first film so great was pure driving. That is how he got out of the situation. He didn't have some stupid machine that overturned cars. If the film was finished, I would have still seen it. It just seems to me that Mr. Halicki was trying to milk the original film for all he could. He didn't do to badly with the Junkman, but he should have stopped there.
I would buy this DVD, but don't pay retail. It isn't worth it. I would venture to say that if you really wanted to see it, you could make "Deadline Auto Theft" yourself by playing the first 10 minutes after the opening credits of "The Junkman" and the last 80 or so minutes of "Gone in 60 Seconds" And, you wouldn't have to listen to Denise Halicki.
Three = One?.......2005-09-23
I started watching this movie, Deadline Auto Theft, and about 10 minutes into the movie I realized, that it seemed rather familiar. Then it hit me, it was the same as the first movie, just with a different introduction. The only difference between the Third and First movies is the opening car chase and then minor scenes within the movie to tie in that opening scene with the rest of the movie. At first I though that I just got a faulty DVD or something and that there was a mistake, but then I noticed that in the extra part of the the DVD there was the trailers to all three movies. I watched the first and third trailers, and those were basically the exact same thing. Again, they put in the one different car chase, and changed the name, but other than that, it was the same trailer too. All in all, it was still a good movie, because so is the first one, but I wish there was actually a different story line, or something different about it.
A Worthy Finaly To The Halicki Trilogy.......2004-04-14
I want to start this by saying ignore all the other reviews. What you have to understand about Deadline Auto Theft is yeah it is 90% footge from Gone In 60 Seconds and The Junkman his second film but he was not trying to rip people off as some reviewers think Deadline Auto Theft was intended as a little pet project of his own.By the time he wanted to do a 3rd picture he had been in the buisness a while now and had learned the tricks so hewanted to take the best of Gone and The Junkman and put them togeher for people who may not have seen either of the origionals kind of "you missed it the first time well here is the best of what you missed" I do think it was misleading to call it the 3rd in the trilodgy as its not really a new film but that doesn't matter. As for Gone 2 its a tragidy that it was never finished its great with sooooooo many crashes and The Slicer wedge stunt car if this had been finished I suspect this would be my favorite anyway if you new to Haliki films don't get this first you'll be confused get the origional Gone In 60 Seconds but for anybody who knows his work and is waery of getting this due to the other reviews I sugested you get it its definatly worth it
We Won't Forget You Toby

Description
Dean Cain stars in this pulse-pounding suspense thriller about a man who is stuck at a crossroads, caught in the crosshairs and way beyond the point of no return. Cain "carries the film with ease" (Los Angeles Times) as Jeremy Stanton, a stereotypical yuppie whose situation turns out to be anything but typical when a seemingly routine road trip develops into an increasingly desperate game of cat and mouse. Trapped in a maze of endless desert highways, bound by a vital deadline and pursued by an unseen menace (Danny Trejo), Stanton is about to take the longest - and perhaps last - ride of his life!
Customer Reviews:
Nothing to be lost about..........2007-03-24
I ordered this movie just for watching the trailer and i might say that it matched and overwhelmed my expectations!
The story is thrilling and it's very well achieved as a film because it lives on only one character for about 90% of the time. A compelling journey that keeps throwing you bits and pieces of what might have happened but never what is going to happen. That's why if you miss the final 3 minutes you miss the whole clímax!
As for Dean Cain, he really absorbs the character and has that X factor which drives the audience to twist in the chair when the thrilling scenes happen.
I'm not gonna tell anything more because it's the kind of movie you really have to watch to understand. It can have many lessons or it may just work has 2 hours of entertainement, either way it blows us away!
Pity this kind of movies don't get the mainstream...it sure would beat some of those big BLOCKBUSTERS.
LOST DVD with Dean Cain.......2007-01-16
I like almost anything Dean Cain is in. This was especially exciting and full of suspense. The ending was truly a surprise. I highly recommend this movie.
By All Means, Buckle Up And Get LOST!!.......2006-10-03
I originally read about this movie in an issue of Fangoria magazine, which led me to believe that it was a horror film. We picked it up and watched it and my first reaction was this is a crappy horror film, but man what an awesome action/drama! After I saw the movie I reread the article in Fangoria and the author conceded that this movie was not a horror film (this totally slipped by me when I read it the first time), but was a film worthy of viewing by anyone who liked good films. The author is right. Dean Cain, usually associated with the Lois and Clark series, is better known to me through the horror films he's done like Boa and Dragon Fighter, and him hosting the Ripley's Believe It or Not series. I'm not a big fan of his work, but always thought he was a descent enough actor. He's excellent in this film. There is not one point that I didn't believe him as this character. He does an absolutely incredible job of making us believe him. The supporting cast is brilliant with Danny Trejo as the menace on the road and Ashley Scott comes off as the perfect 'voice on the phone' that's easy to listen too and easy to believe. The story is well thought out and it's an absolute blast to watch a bad situation goes from bad, to worse, and finally totally disintegrates right in front of him. I'm not familiar with anything that Darren Lemke's done in the past, but if this is any indication of what is coming in the future, then I'm in for the ride of my life.
LOST.......2006-08-10
As a Dean Cain fan I was thrilled with this movie It is suspensful and kept me guessing the whole time. The format was different than most movies in that it follows Dean's character on a trip, so he was in 90% of the scenes. Loved the action. Very good movie
90 mph down a dead end road.......2006-07-16
Considering his string of career disappointments since the demise of "Lois & Clark" you have to wonder why in the world Dean Cain would ever have agreed to star in "Lost," a 2004 movie by Darren Lemke now available on DVD. The only possible answer that comes to mind is that Cain figured that if people could suspend their disbelieve enough to not see through Clark Kent's disguise, then maybe they could also suspend it enough not see through this failed and pointless movie.
The set-up here (one can't actually call it a plot) is that Cain is a bank VP who arranges to have his own bank robbed, and then double-crosses the bad guys who stage the hold-up on his behalf. It is a premise that might have gone far in the hands of an accomplished screenwriter. Unfortunately, Lemke acted as his own scribe and apparently never showed the script to a soul until the cameras started rolling, so one can only surmise that there was no one else there to tell him that he had gone way, way, way, off course.
The tension in the film is supposed to come from three facts: #1, Cain's character, Jeremy Stanton, is lost somewhere in the Nevada desert trying to make his escape from what he initially believes to be the perfect crime. The second alleged tension point is the fact that not only his erstwhile accomplices, but everyone else west of the Mississippi have quickly figured out that Stanton is the brains behind both the robbery and the double-cross. The third and final bit of suspense is intended to come from the fact that Stanton's cheated former partners are hot on his trail.
Regrettably, not one of these subplots really works. Much is made in the screenplay of the fact that Stanton's map is out of date and that roads along his intended route are closed, flooded or no longer in existence. But by the third time his On-Star proxy telephone navigation aide has informed him that the road he is on actually has a different name than the one on the map, the device has worn dangerously thin. In point of fact, it is probably impossible to truly get as lost anywhere in North America as Stanton is portrayed as being in the film. But this impossibility is only one of several that haunt this improbable tale. A few other include Stanton's apparent belief that his disappearance will go unnoticed after the robbery; the fact that he is portrayed as not having ever scouted out his escape route, and therefore has no idea at all of where he is going; the fact that his bad guy accomplices somehow unerringly get from the scene of the crime to the exact same roads to nowhere he is unintentionally traveling, and do so quickly enough to literally be right on his tail; and the fact that these same accomplices not only figure out EXACTLY how to trap him, but are successful in doing so. The script even has Cain reprising one of his old Superman stunts, unbelievably successful in spite of the absence of costume or cape.
To spice up Stanton's journey, Director Lemke tosses in an ominous cop on trash patrol, a catatonic old lady with a truck to sell, a spooky toothless preacher, moral lessons from one of AAA's lesser known competitors, and perhaps the worst motivational speaker to ever sell an audio tape. None of it helps.
This film is aptly titled, for the movie, like the Stanton character himself, speeds 90 miles an hour down a dead end road, and it is quite possible to sense Cain sharing Stanton's grudging relief when the whole thing comes to a predictable and bad end. "At least it's over," both the actor and his character must have been thinking.
It is only too bad that neither Cain nor his alter ego ever noticed the cavernous holes in this awful story; perhaps he could have driven through one, gotten clean away and against the odds lived happily ever after.

Only a handful of independent animators have ever attempted a feature-length film, and it's regrettable that Bill Plympton's first effort isn't more successful. His extremely limited style of animation--he uses about one-third fewer drawings than Saturday morning kidvid shows--worked for his short films, but it simply can't sustain an audience's interest for more than an hour. The limits of the visuals might be less noticeable if the story were more interesting. Del, an aspiring songwriter, needs to come up with a hit in a hurry, so he can marry Didi, a secretary at Mega Music. He visits the weird town of Flooby Nooby where he hears people singing various songs--which he takes and passes off as own. At times, Plympton seems to be trying for the upbeat tone of the old Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musicals, but those films about "amateurs" relied on very talented professional performers and songwriters. The songs in The Tune range from amateurish pastiches to utter doggerel. Watching The Tune is only slightly more entertaining than spending 69 minutes in a sensory deprivation tank. --Charles Solomon

Mind Blowing Animation.......2005-04-11
Bill plymptons first full length movie is finally on dvd and its so good. The animation is the classic style of morphing and it never fails to stop entertaing. If your a fan of mature animation or plymptons this is a must have
Plympton for ALL Ages.......2004-11-27
Bill Plympton's hand-drawn colored pencil cartoons are a joy to look at, and very funny with their multitudes of visual puns. But unfortunately most of his films are really for more mature audiences than can be shown in a classroom setting. This is the one DVD of Plympton's that is entirely appropriate for young audiences. Kids like the silly songs and weird roaming story. It is also an excellent example of economizing animation production with cycles and "moving holds." I wish they would package it with his short film "Your Face" which is also great for kids as an example of how animation can be used to change something normal --a face-- into a million variations of funny and strange.
Funny Animation, Great Tunes.......2002-03-14
This full length film is highly recommended for Bill Plympton fans or fans of edgy animation. A solid effort from one of America's most distinctive animation artists.
For the most part "The Tune seems to be a collection of Bill Plympton's shorter animations strung together with the aid of a thin storyline. The story is a sweet one, of love and what it means to give someone a song. But the main character is a little cloying, and it's hard to care much about what happens to him and his girl. That being said, the peripheral characters, who star in the musical numbers, are much more interesting. The animations are outstanding and easily stand on their own. They seem to have been done at different times, in different styles, and it seems like not all these bits were aware they were gonna become a part of this movie. As a result each has a slightly different look, and color palette, which adds to the interest of the film.
Plympton's signature pencil sketch style is jumpy, wierd, disorienting and hilarious. Heads fold in half, split in two, and turn inside out. Characters morph into representations of the lyrics while they sing. The Wiseman's bald head grows funny hats by the dozens while a twangy countrified guitar does speed-solos. Serious tango partners share dumb jokes.
Each scene (for the most part) is based on a song, and the music is very catchy. I bought the soundtrack and still sing "Isn't It Good Again" and "Dance All Day" to myself frequently.
This is not your standard animated movie. It's intended audience is adults, though it's certainly not "dirty" and kids could enjoy most sections of this. At most, sex is hinted at, as when a hotdog enthusiastically leaps into a hotdog bun. Pretty obvious, and amusing, but at the same time fairly innocuous. Also, we get to see a moment of naked animated bums at the end of "Dance All Day." Nothing your average kid can't handle.
In fullscreen, about an hour long. Regrettably, the sound is slightly muddy, and like most of Plmyptons releases, it's short on special features (there are none) and DVD production values aren't the highest. But this flick is certainly worth seeing on it's own merits.
Brilliant and distinctive animated musical.......2001-12-26
I was astonished to read ...(this website's) in-house review trashing The Tune. It's one of the most innovative animated musical films of all time. I saw in the early 90s and couldn't get it out of my mind. Finally purchased the soundtrack a few years ago, and it's one of my favorites, with tunes rooted in a dozen genres, from surfer music and rural blues to slick Vegas show tunes, Sondheim-type musings, and commercial country--about the only thing The Tune skips is opera! Bill Plympton's jittery animation works perfectly.
Just amazing...the second time 'round..........2001-09-15
If you've only watched this movie once then you haven't experienced it. You need to watch it again because it is then when you'll discover its brilliance. Believe me, the first time I hated it, then I was forced to watch it again, and it now is one of my favorite movies of all times. Great songs, great story, great animation. Plympton and McElheron are geniouses! Please appreciate this movie as much as I do.

The left-wing labor unions made this historically priceless film in 1946 that openly and earnestly criticizes big businesses and their growing power and influence over government immediately following World War Two. This film is amazing because the labor unions have actually weakened dramatically since this film was made! With an important theme, great filmmaking and wonderful metaphoric illustrations, this is a wonderful documentation of a changing mid-century America. You can't find this film on DVD anywhere else!
