BASIL RATHBONE NIGEL BRUCE
In SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SECRET WEAPON
Digitally Restored in 35mm
The master detective Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his faithful cohort Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) are back, preserved and digitally restored in 35mm to original condition by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. This newly restored version of the classic film includes the period war bond tag, studio logo and credits from its original theatrical release. Filled with ominous shadows and interesting camera angles, the visual beauty of the film in 35mm is stunning.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" inspired THE SECRET WEAPON. The wartime plot pits Sherlock Holmes once more against his nemesis, the villainously brilliant Professor Moriarty, who was believed dead but is now working for the Nazis. The Nazis have assigned Moriarty to kidnap Dr. Franz Tobel, the inventor of a new super bombsight. Sherlock Holmes outwits the enemy agents and escapes with Tobel and his precious invention. But despite elaborate precautions, the inventor later disappears before the process of manufacturing the bombsight is perfected.
Holmes and Watson must stop the Nazis from getting their hands on the new bombsight, wrapped in a code of dancing men. Using a variety of disguises - a Swiss inventor, the Lascar sailor Ram Singh, and an old German bookseller, Holmes puts his own life on the line in a race against the clock to prevent Moriarty from carrying out his evil plans. THE SECRET WEAPON is also the first of the films to introduce Dennis Hoey as Scotland Yard detective Inspector Lestrade. Preserved and restored in 35mm by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
Customer Reviews:
The Secret is Stunning!.......2007-02-11
I've always been leery of "colorized" BW films. Seems the color is typically "splotchy," with an unreal quality, but I found this colorized version of The Secret Weapon quite remarkable. As with The Woman in Green, also available, if I hadn't already been aware the movie was originally black and white, I would think it had been filmed initially in color! I found it that good. I think it adds to the viewing experience, making the characters and story more readily immediate rather than more like a story from long ago. Print is crisp, clean. Though I consider myself a Holmes purist/Basil Rathbone enthusiast, I highly recommend this colorized version!
SherlockHolmes and the Secret Weapon.......2006-11-04
Being a Sherlock Holmes fan the Colourized version was very good
Colorized Holmes.......2006-03-24
I ordered this version out of curiosity. When Ted Turner began colorizing films in the 80's, I was generally opposed to the idea. The few films I saw with this technique applied did not look very good (artificial-looking) and the artistry of the black and white photography seemed to be lost. When I came across these recent releases of the Rathbone Holmes films I decided to try one; they were the public domain films which had been released for years in poor VHS and DVD versions and to be honest, were some of the weaker films in the series. Also, if I didn't like the colorization there was also the black and white version on the disk. Shocker: I was delighted with the colorization! The technique was applied much better than in the past and it breathed new life into the film (which was needed; I always felt this film to be sloppy propaganda). While I don't think "Citizen Kane" or "Psycho" should be colorized, I think it makes an interesting experiment for some of the forgotten B films of the past. I think it would be neat to see the "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers" serials colorized by these technicians.
Crisp, brilliant visuals.......2006-03-11
Don't be swayed by other reviewers here. This colourised edition is excellent-as is the original black and white edition on the same disc.
These dvds are a must have-prepare to be amazed at what a good, sensitive job has been done in restoration and colourising.

FUN!.......2005-05-09
The Secret Weapon is one my all time favorite Rathbone and Bruce films. It's wonderful to have it on DVD! The Universal Holmes series continues to be a great source of fun and I've always enjoyed seeing Holmes and Watson transplanted into the 1940's and dealing with W.W.II intrigue and Nazi spies. The Secret Weapon adds the nefarious Moriarty to the mix! I won't argue that the Universal Holmes movies had the most logical elements, but they always highly entertained me. The Secret Weapon is no exception. I found this one to be a blast. Great stuff!

Sherlock Holmes Collection Vol. 1.......2006-03-15
Exactly what I was hoping for in old movie DVD's. Perfectly restored and just what I was looking for in movies to watch. This is a perfect mix of Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes Collection Vol. 1.......2006-03-04
This is a wonderful collection of the best of the Sherlock Holmes movies, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. There have been many actors cast in the roles of Homes and Watson, but Rathbone and Bruce are by far the best. These films are all updated to the 40's, when Britain was at war with Hitler, but they still are very intertaining. "The Voice of Terror," "The Secret Weapon," and "Holmes in Washington" all are concerned with Nazi spies and the war, and were obviously made as a moral booster for the wartime audiences. They are excellent examples of how to make movies that will entertain for many, many years and not just for the weekend boxoffice grab, the way most films are done today.
Classic.......2006-02-25
If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan than this set is for you. I'm going to buy all of the sets.
excellent, but a rip off.......2006-02-06
excellent dvd's, marvellous restauration, but you americans are getting ripped off like crazy here: this complete collection of 16 restaured films cost more than 200 dollars in the USA while the SAME collection with exactly the same extra's and the same restauration from the same company can be purchased, with a rather more appealing slip cover I'd say, in the UK for as little as 25 pounds(about 37 dollars) or at amazon uk for 34 pounds(about 51 dollars)... if that isn't a reason to buy a regionfree dvd player I don't know what is....don't let those money hungry purveyors of the seperate dvd regions get their way!!!

Buy them!

Customer Reviews:
Horror? Not really. Classics? Perhaps. Worth it? Probably........2002-08-15
SH & the SW- Rathbone and Bruce are THE Holmes/Watson pair, and this is among the top 5 Sherlockian outings, although it is a risible addition to a `horror classics' disc.
In this fast-paced, well-assembled programmer, now set in WWII England rather than in Victorian England, our heroes have to contend not only with Moriarty as portrayed by villainous Universal fave Lionel Atwill, and his minions, but also Nazi agents seeking an experimental bombsight which could turn the tide of the war.
The mystery involves a complex code, plenty of captures and escapes, disguises, deduction, and welcome humor without cheapening any of the characters.
Purists may rightly complain that the ending has more in common with serials than with the writings of Doyle, but, hey, it's fun.
IM- This supremely inexpensive attempt to cross Dragnet with Lon Chaney's persona doesn't quite come off. It's more police procedural than horror; Chaney's back-from-the-dead Butcher character could just as easily have been written to be a normal vengeance-seeking ex-con. At any rate, the basic story idea has been around at least since Karloff's 1936 film, The Walking Dead.
IM is fairly routine and plodding (both as `noir' and as `horror'), although there is amusement to be had from the narration, from Chaney, who looks convincingly psychotic and was probably sauced to the gills, and from all the usual things that make these kind of B-movies fun.
Flip a coin as to whether you think the means of Lon's ultimate destruction is fitting or nonsensical.
DMW- Another PRC snoozer, DMW begins with George Zucco having killed his twin brother because he was practicing the black arts. However, the brother returns as a vampire and sets about destroying all that his good twin holds dear. Of course good wins the day, but not without some tragedy. This film was not badly conceived, and Zucco is a likeable pro, but it was badly executed. While not as glacially-slow as some of its other fare, PRC's stubborn unwillingness to spend any cash, or to show the audience anything they hadn't seen a dozen times before, stakes this one right through its mediocre heart.
Pretty Rotten Crap, as the studio's output was known in Hollywood circles of the time, was hurt by always having monsters that just look like people, yet claiming that they were monsters: a slightly hairier Glenn Strange, a kind of pasty Charles Middleton, or in this case, George Zucco dressed in black. Whooo, spoooky! They couldn't even spring for a set of dime store fangs to make him look the part of a bloodsucker. He is one because the script says he is, and because he sometimes fades from view.
Plus, DMW wastes quite a bit of time assuming no one seeing the movie will have ever heard about vampires before, and picks and chooses which rules it will follow.
All told, while I am not a zealous fan of any one of the movies on this disc, they are passable genre fare and the disc is of decent quality considering the low price. Fans of the casts and completists should have no qualms purchasing it.
