Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. But it's the quirky things that make this film: the grandmothers playing Scrabble with expletives, Burgess Meredith's snake Esme, the old Japanese couple in the back of the careening limo. From the opening credits with Barry Manilow crooning the title song, this is a fond trip down memory lane. --Keith Simanton

4 out of 5 stars It makes me happy inside.......2007-06-28

This is a movie I can enjoy over and over, like a favorite fairy tale.

Where do I begin? Goldie Hawn as Gloria Mundy is gutsy yet tender, assertive without being obnoxious, and funny, funny funny.

The plot is multi level. If you care about such things, it's an intriguing concept that international terrorists want to kill the pope in order to force taxation of churches. If that's a yawn for you, just enjoy the running around and avoiding the bad guys. It's both a tribute to and a sendup of both Hitchcock and cop movies.

If you like classical music, the entire operetta of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado is the soundtrack, (almost) completely in sequence. (OK, there's some BeeGees mixed in, too.) If you don't like opera, just ignore it, you don't have to understand it to have it add to the fun.

Some of the details are marvelous!! In all my life, no matter how "serious" the movie is, I have never seen a good-guy gunshot scene done so well. (Chevy Chase as cop Tony Carlson has the bad guy in his sight, realizes he can't make the shot without endandering an innocent bystander, and declines to shoot--rather than shooting away anyhow!) The lead up to what Stanley Tibbits does for a living is hilarious and strangely subtle. And the Scrabble game could stand alone in any comedy show.

This is the acting career that got away from Chevy Chase--he does nuanced irony ("Stiltskin...I've heard that name somewhere before") and pratfalls with equal aplomb. If he'd stayed with directors that kept him from chewing the scenery in other movies, what would he have accomplished?

OK, some of the details are silly--how in the world did Gloria's clothes get in Tony's apartment? Why do the bad guys let her keep her pocketbook?

But in the long run it's fun, and they all (good guys, anyway) lived happily ever after.

5 out of 5 stars Just fun.......2007-06-26

A movie to watch for fun. Nothing earth shattering, but very enjoyable. One of my all time favorite movies

5 out of 5 stars A great Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn movie! .......2007-05-23

5 out of 5 stars Foul Play.......2007-02-19

I watched this movie when I was a teenager, when it was classified as a 'B' movie. In those days, you got a 'B' movie first then the main feature. I have always remembered it and even watching it now a quarter of a century later it still is as funny and comical as I remember. The charecters are original and the plot plausable. The only thing I never understood was why the team lead by Chevy Chase couldnt work out it was the pope who was going to be shot. When they knew all along that the biggest hit man west of Chicago had been hired to do the job? The pope was to visit San Francisco in a few days so to me it was logical that he was going to be the target.

Don't panic! After twenty years stuck in development (a mere blink compared to how long it takes to find the answer to life, the universe, and everything), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has finally been turned into a movie. Following the radio play, TV series, commemorative towel, and books, this latest installment in the sci-fi-comedy franchise is based on the screenplay and detailed notes by Douglas Adams.

Hitching a ride.

For those unfamiliar with the story, everyman Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) wakes up one morning to discover that his house is set to be demolished to make room for a bypass. Little does he know the entire planet Earth is also set to be destroyed for an interplanetary bypass by the Vogons, a hideous and bureaucratic race of aliens realized in the film by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Whisked off the planet by his best friend, alien-in-disguise Ford Prefect (Mos Def), Dent embarks on a goofy jaunt across the galaxy accompanied by his trusty Hitchhiker's Guide, which looks like a really fancy PDA.

The guide itself provides some of the funniest bits of the movie, little animated shorts that explain the ludicrous life forms and extraterrestrial phenomena our heroes encounter. Along the way Arthur meets the two-headed party animal/president of the galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell) and develops an unrequited crush on fellow earthling Trillian (Zooey Deschanel). The creatures and sets are inspired and answer to the sci-fi fan's primal need to see lots and lots of cool stuff. In particular, there's John Malkovich's creepy, CGI-enhanced Humma Kavula. He's a guru leading a religion that worships the gigantic nose that allegedly sneezed the universe into existence (naturally all their prayers end not with "Amen" but with "Bless you.") The aliens the team encounters are inspired creations, eminently worthy of action figure-ification, and the sets belie an attention to detail worthy of freeze-framing. Fans of the other Hitchhiker manifestations, namely the British TV series, will be amused by a number of in-jokes sprinkled throughout the movie.

Concept art: The Heart of Gold pod on the planet Vogsphere

Where the story stumbles is in the telling--as books, the Hitchhiker's Guide was foremost about goofy and brilliant ideas that raised questions about our place in the universe while getting a laugh. The cast seems at times bewildered, at least when Sam Rockwell isn't picking pieces of scenery out of his teeth, perhaps a natural reaction to an adaptation of a book with no traditional plot. The movie has enough trouble figuring out how to get the characters from one fantastical location to the next that Adams's funniest concepts often feel left in the dust. While the reverence the filmmakers felt toward Adams's legacy is apparent, one wonders what we could have expected had the creator of this science fiction universe lived to see it with his own eyes. -- Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars HEY! are all those other movies boring you? watch this one instead!.......2007-06-15

it goes without saying: the more original the novel, the higher expectations are for the movie adaptation. douglas adams shares the rarest of company, with vonnegut being the only contemporary peer and source of inspiration that im aware of (if you know others, please recommend them!) thankfully, hitchhikers delivers on screen, accurately capturing the feel of the book, even with the standard deviation and dilution of plot and character. narrated excerpts from the guide, necessary for an authentic hikers experience, are brilliant in content and execution. if i really wanted to find fault, id say that zaphods part was a bit overacted and marvins a tad underacted. but the film is so much fun that its easy to overlook any minor shortcomings. how often do you find a movie with above average intelligence that doesnt take itself too seriously and makes you laugh for days after its over? also contributing greatly to my judgment of overall satisfaction and life enhancement is the fact that many lines are conveniently quotable when a) goofing off with a few friends, b) taking a shower (with or without a few friends) or c) begrudgingly dealing with the everyday frustrations and activities of an all too banal, conformist society, which elevates vacuous filth and garbage above anything of actual merit or significance.

if youre not familiar with the hitchhikers guide, id describe the movie as somewhat of a marriage between "i love huckabees" (more of the intellectual approach) and the tv series "scrubs" (more on the goofy side, as if you didnt know) with a sci-fi setting. take note: the emphasis is on the fiction, with the science being loosely (albeit cleverly) applied, so dont take it too seriously! if you start analyzing everything as if its star trek, youll completely miss the point, only part of which is to poke fun at the constipated nature of the sci-fi majority. and if you like the movie, by all means read the book. its 2764.31910283387400183401448308238532722014869088173775898283 times smarter, funnier and betterer...

4 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING REMAKE.......2007-06-13

The original BBC Hitchhikers guide was wonderful fun with a low budget. This film gives it the updated graphics and more to make it even better. A funny adventure from beginning to end. Martin Freeman plays Arthur Dent perfectly. The entire cast performs so well and have great chemistry. Mos Def as Ford was brilliant and what more can be said for the President of the Galaxy. The humor and the graphics make this a perfect movie to see for all sci fi lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Adventurous Movie.......2007-06-12

First off, I am not going to give a synopsis of the movie - then you wouldn't need to watch it. I will say that based on the reviews I have read, if you liked the book or Mini-Series, maybe you should shy away from this movie. I myself have not read the book so I am like most people. My entire family loved this movie and my kids watch it over and over again. This is good news given that my kids are usually bored 5 minutes into any task they take on. The characters in this movie work well together and the movie makes you feel good from start to finish.
As a lover of all things Sci-Fi I found this movie to fit the bill perfectly. It would be a shame if you didn't watch this movie simply because the original book fans were disappointed. Try it out, and I would bet you like it (better the second time around).

5 out of 5 stars So long, and thanks for all the fish..........2007-05-23

I was prepared to be disappointed at the feature movie version of the infamous book (and later BBC mini-series, available elsewhere on DVD), but I was pleasantly surprised and delighted with this "version." I read the book a long, long time ago, and wasn't that impressed with the TV version, which is perhaps why, after so many years, I was ready to be disappointed. Could "Hollyweird" really do justice to dim, confusing but challenging memories of the original text? And ideas, and visuals inside my head? In less than two hours? The answers to all, a thumbs way up yes!

Some "purists" have dissed this film, but for anyone with a more casual approach, this is not only a great version of the book (and puts the TV series to shame in all ways except length, imho), it's a great introduction to some rather mind-expanding ideas, most of which are still present after all of these years, for those who may never have pondered seriously the answer to the question "What is the meaning of life?"

It's 42, of course.

This film (version) of the original book, works on so many levels, it's hard to know where to begin. For those unfamiliar with the whole concept, the condensed movie-movie is entertaining from beginning to end, even if you wind up asking yourself what the bleep has been going on throughout. This makes this version good for repeated viewings, and if one likes this, a must buy DVD, aside from the extras. For those who either read the book long ago or saw the TV series, the jury may be out, and it all depends on your taste. And your expectations. Having had fond memories of the long-distant book, and not too favorable feelings about the TV series, I really liked this. It brought back, in a short time, a lot of what impressed me in younger dayz.

The movie tells the story of an "everyman" suddenly swept up in a cosmic adventure, where he finds the most strange things, and where the true nature of the universe is revealed, piece by piece. The beginning titles and sequences with the dolphins and the catchy "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish" song are perfect. Within a short time, our hero is sent on a wild ride, with constantly changing characters and settings, all done with extremely good CGI. The bulk of the film itself slows down in some parts, and is totally confusing and weird for weird sake in others, but overall, even a caveman can do it! That is, "get" the main gist here by the end. An ending which is a quick montage and replaying of the fish song, and couldn't have been better.

Fans of serious sci-fi need to look elsewhere, as this is much more a work of fantasy, however, as the two genres often interact, this really doesn't disappoint on either level, even if doesn't entirely (at times) satisfy either. But I'm not going to carp. Truth is, sci-fi fan or fantasy fan, the mixture here adds up to a fun experience throughout, and has what I think is the most important feature of any movie and/or DVD. If you like it at first viewing, you'll want to own the thing, to watch it and parts, again, and again.

The special effects in this are great, though not perfect. The music is good, especially the title and ending song. All the actors here do a subtle but effective job, with a standout being that from wholesome babe Zooey Deschanel. The constantly depressed robot is also consistenly funny, till the end. Along the way, we are swept away in a totally weird world (the galaxy, and universe to be precise), seeing all the wonders and madness both first person and third (and second I guess, somewhere along the way), meeting with and existing alongside many strange characters and things from beginning to end.

This film works in the long run, because it never really takes itself too seriously, just like the book and general original "thesis." That is, that we are but tiny little insignificant organisms in a greater cosmos, one in which, almost anything one can imagine, might actually be reality, in a semi-serious, or wacky beyond our real understanding way. I was rather torn about giving this a five star rating. Four might be better appropriate, since not everyone might get what this is all about. And there are some slow spots. But going back to my expectations, this film really works on multi-levels, for those both unfamiliar with the book and ideas, and for those with a more casual interest.

While the TV series (and DVD) may deal with the book's original material much more thoroughly, this condensed version is just about the best I had hoped for from the studio system. It's entertaining, period, from beginning to end, and aside from minor flaws, has become one of my favorite movies. And one of the best sci-fi/fantasy efforts from Hollywood in a long, long time.

4 out of 5 stars nice funny movie.......2007-05-12

Product Description

Burt Reynolds stars as the Bandit in this seminal portrayal of rough-ridin', beer-swillin', sheriff-dodgin', trouble-chasin' truckers. The Bandit's has taken on his craziest haul yet: a trailer full of Coors beer. If he can deliver the goods from Texarcana to Atlanta within forty-eight hours, he'll be $80,000 richer. Hilarious mayhem ensues, however, when the Bandit falls for a runaway bride (Sally Field). As they push toward Atlanta, the two have to evade Fields' vengeful father-in-law, Texas Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason as the maniac "Smokey" of the title). The stakes get higher and the car chases more frenzied in this hysterical romp through the American highways. Charismatic performances by Reynolds and Gleason made this a huge box office draw. ITA winner. Academy Award Nominations: Best Film Editing.

It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Just on the Nostalgia value alone.......2007-05-31

I had forgotten how much fun the late 70's were. After seeing this on CMT and other channels a few times, my feeling was that "this sucks just as bad as I remember". But after seeing it on DVD in its entirety without commercial interruption(ha), the pacing and flow of the movie seems to stand up well, even though if you made this film today, it would only run 38 minutes, because all the car chase scenes would be edited in milliseconds. Not a bad period piece from 197X, at all.

5 out of 5 stars a must for all burt reynolds fans........2007-05-12

A classic for all time. you have to own the Bandit. See the movie that Made Burt one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars A fun movie even with the errors........2007-03-20

I saw this movie when it first came to the theater. No such thing as video back then. This movie set off the Firebird craze and furthered the CB craze. It is a fun movie in spite of the 50+ obvious continuity errors in it. Some of the really obvious errors range from evidence of previous takes of a scenes (Tire marks on the pavement) to watching a Firebird accelerating as if it has a 4 speed transmission only later to see an automatic transmission gear shift, to watching the order of other prop cars change. Even when "Frog" has her feet out the window while going down the road in the next shot, where her head is on the console, the transmission shifter is in neutral.

Get the movie and watch it. Its fun in spite of the errors.

5 out of 5 stars Classic but you know there will be a remake... .......2007-03-18

After "The Longest Yard" was remade, it's only a matter of time until they redo this one and update it,with Burt, Jerry and Sally? or "Bandit: the Early Years?".

Funny, GREAT chase film, well-filmed and edited. The film holds up even if there are some dated references. Language is kind of on the rough side but nothing too bad. Cartman quotes from this film on "South Park".

Pontiac and Coors would be nothing without this film.

They should never have done the sequels... although Cannonball Run II might've been the one to avoid.

Steven Spielberg's first feature film, 1971's Duel, is set on a desert highway. It stars Dennis Weaver as a driver being pursued by a menacing truck, which is following him with all the vengeance of the ancient furies. In this spiritual update from 1984, C. Thomas Howell plays a guy taking a drive-away car from Chicago to San Diego. On a whim, in the rain, and against his better judgment, he picks up a hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer). The hitcher quickly admits to being a murdering psychopath, and once Howell finally gets him out of his car, he is pursued with all the vengeance of the ancient furies. We're never sure if the hitcher is a figment of his imagination, making Howell a schizophrenic killer, or if he's real and Howell is the random victim of a wandering madman, which is how his potential new girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh) thinks of him. Either way, The Hitcher is great fun, kinda scary, and teetering on the brink of "must see." --Andy Spletzer

4 out of 5 stars Pick Up This Hitcher.......2007-06-18

If you're going to pick up a Hitcher, be sure that it's this original from 1986.

In 1981, Rutger Hauer made his American film debut as diabolical terrorist "Wulfgar" in Nighthawks Nighthawks . 5 years later he appeared in the original The Hitcher in the role of John Ryder, one of the most ruthless serial psycho killers ever to be born on the big screen.

The 1986 version had a very 80s feel to it then, and re-watching it this past weekend, I can say that it is indeed very 80s. But it's very well done. There are some over-the-top stunts that would have killed any ordinary serial killer. But that was part of the mystique of John Ryder. Was he human? Was he a monster? Was he the Devil?

The Hitcher's director in 1986 was Robert Harmon, who pretty much tuned to TV after The Hitcher, which is probably a good thing because the "TV camp" definitely came through in a lot of his original version of The Hitcher, but overall it was exciting and unforgettable.

Fast Forward 21 years and music video Director Dave Meyers re-does 1986's The Hitcher with an all new cast and a few minor story changes The Hitcher (Widescreen Edition) . Yes...I said "re-does" as opposed to "re-makes". A re-make is when a director takes an old film, sometimes even a classic, and makes it better. A re-do is when a director takes a film and adds nothing to the original (and in most cases makes it worse). The 2007 version of The Hitcher is a re-do.

While the 2007 version definitely does take the 80s feel out of the original, it also takes a lot out of the fiendish, classic villain that was created by Rutger Hauer. Sean Bean is in the role of John Ryder in the 2007 version. Yes, Bean has played his share of villains, so he had no problem as a bad guy in The Hitcher 2007, but it was like taking Robert Englund out of Freddy Krueger...it just wasn't the same.

Look, I'm not a big preservationist that thinks remaking good original movies should be taboo. I just think that a re-make should indeed be that...a re-make...not a re-do.

So regardless of what your Mom has told you....You can indeed pick up a Hitcher; just make sure that it's the original.

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed.......2007-06-08

this is a very good movie, i wonder what the remake's like. i thought this was an intenes movie, you never know what would happen next. this is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Rutger Hauer can do it all.......2007-06-02

This movie is a tell-tale sign of Rutger Hauer's acting abilities. At this time he was making a killing in the movie, he was giving us a mysterious character which we know nothing about. Even so, the viewer is scared of him. This movie made people quit picking up Hitchhikers, because this could really happen. It even spawned a TV series named after it and a ton of other Hitcher style movies. If you haven't seen it, watch it before you see the remake, this one blows the new one out of the water.

2 out of 5 stars Gripping...yet really, really long.......2007-06-01

Hitcher takes a great story and turns it into an unbelievable, frustrating mess. Murphy's Law is definitely the premise of this movie. It becomes so frustrating watching everything go wrong. The problem with the movie is one that is just so unbelievable. I have this problem with a lot of movies but this one just takes it so far that it totally ruins it for me. The killer manages to be everywhere with little explanation of how he got there. Not only that, but he seems to be able to move and kill silently without anyone noticing until an opportune moment when he suddenly appears. The only good thing about this movie is Rutger Hauer who plays his part perfectly. And it is occasionally suspenseful when you're not too busy laughing at it.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Jason Leigh Taffy-Pull..........2007-05-21

Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) is a normal guy, just trying to stay awake behind the wheel of his car (well, it's not really his, but he's delivering it from Chicago to San Diego). After a near-death experience w/ an oncoming semi, he decides to pick up a hitch-hiker named John Ryder (the incredible Rutger Hauer). Ryder soon reveals himself to be a psychopathic serial-killer, intent on adding Jim to his long list of victims. Jim manages to escape Ryder's clutches, only to trigger an insane game of cat and mouse, psycho-style! Halsey must try and survive Ryder's vengeance, while eluding the police. With the help of a girl named Nash (SWF's Jennifer Jason Leigh), Halsey stumbles into one horror after another! The movie's multiple climaxes had me chewing my nails 'til my fingers bled! Hauer's John Ryder is pure evil, even scarier than his sociopathic replicant character in BLADERUNNER! A classic villain! Highly recommended...

When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in First Wives Club, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous Showgirls. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though costar Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) should have known better than to take it seriously. --Tom Keogh

Description

Seduction, passion and power struggles unfold when the creators of Basic Instinct, director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers) and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas (Original Sin) blow the lid off the seemingly glamorous world of Las Vegas showdancing to create one of the most controversialand shockingfilms of all time. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) has what it takes to make it as a Las Vegas showgirlwhat she doesn't have is a way in. To survive, she accepts the only job available: lap dancing at a seedy club. And when she meets Cristal (Gina Gershon), Vegas'reigning showgirl, Nomi wants everything she hasincluding her boyfriend (Kyle MacLachlan). And as Nomi dives deeper into the world she so desperately desires, a rivalry between the two women heatsup. The battle for the spotlight becomes so fiercely competitive that it drives Nomi to desperate lengthsand devious heightsfor fame in Sin City.

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-06-14

This film has the worst acting ever. That's probably what makes it so entertaining to watch. The costumes and the dancing are very entertaining and the plot is pretty ridiculous. The VIP set is great with the shot glasses. Definitely a movie you need to see at least once.

1 out of 5 stars Plan 10 From Las Vegas.......2007-04-26

Plan 9 From Outer Space was worse than this steaming pile, but they didn't have the lavish budget to waste that this one did.

Every show biz cliche imaginable is dragged out, but in such a clumsy, trying-but-failing-to-be-manipulative way, that your jaw drops to the floor, and you are entertained, almost against your will. Also, there are really spectacular dance scenes, and lots of female flesh for the eyes to feast on.

But the story and the dialogue and the direction are stupid. The red haired actor who plays the choreographer also played the Wig Master for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on an episode of Seinfeld. Kramer somehow misses seeing the show and as consolation, is allowed to walk down Broadway wearing the Tecnicolor Dreamcoat. He is then mistaken for a pimp and arrested. Perhaps that whole sequence was intended as an homage to Showgirls, and one can only wish that Joe Esterhauz could have been arrested for pimpin' this ridiculous movie.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Erotic Movies Ever Made. (IMHO).......2007-03-04

Showgirls is one those movies that has been paraded with awful reviews "Woofs" and just plain hate. I really don't understand why this is. Showgirls is about a beautiful young woman named Nomi(Elizabeth Berkley), Who decides to try her luck and hitchhike to Las Vegas to become a dancer. She gets a ride to vegas and befriends a young woman named Molly, Molly then helps her get a job a smalltime strip-club she works at doing make-up and such. Nomi then realizes that she wants more than this. She then auditions for a popular show called "Goddess", Nomi then becomes a surprising success. And many other entertainings happen during the film. The movie is filled with non-stop nudity witch helps the film to become very erotic. You will get an eyefull of the naked body of Elizabeth Berkley, Who you probably used to watch on "Saved By The Bell". The storyline is surprisingly good,The acting is also excellent.

If you have a problem with nudity and the subject of "Rape" I wouldn't recommend this. But if you appreciate the female form and don't mind a little violence I would MOST defenitly recommend this.

All in all this movie deserves a 10/10.

4 out of 5 stars Good sleazy fun!.......2007-03-03

Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) is a beautiful traveling girl who is desperate for a job in Las Vegas. She gets a new home thanks to a new friend named Molly (Gina Riveria) for she gets a job as a dancer at the Cheetah club, one night a talent agent finds her for he decides to have her as a part of an erotic stage show at the Stardust called "Goddess" where she meets the big star known as Cristal (Gina Gerhshon). James (Glen Plummer) is a free-style man helps Nomi as he teaches her the right dance moves to become a top dancer when the rivalery between her and Cristal has begun.

Very entertaining sleaze epic from Paul Verhoeven ("Total Recall", "Robocop", "Basic Instinct" and "Starship Troopers") has non-stop nudity, clever dialog, sex and over the top acting. There's plenty of good eye candy through the many gorgeous girls prancing nude especially Ms. Berkley who really shows off her stuff for the camera.

The DVD has good picture and sound with a couple of good extras like the trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette, this is an enjoyable erotic flick if you can suspend your disbelief.

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-31

I know this movie gets a lot of crap but you know what? I love it and all its smutty terribleness. I've seen it about a hundred times on tv with all the bad stuff cut out so I finally decided to go ahead and buy the damn thing so I could get the goods! and boy was it worth it. I laughed soooo hard. If people were that spastic at sex everyone would be walking around with bruised groins. Despite the bad acting and script, I can't help but love it.

Follow That Bird is as much a journey through time as it is a romp past the Sesame Street stop sign. Curiously, the cast members--live ones like Gordon and Maria, not just the Muppets--have the timeless look to them. Only the cameos (by Sandra Bernhard, John Candy, and others) plus a few ill-conceived hairdos clue us in that this feature film was made in 1985. Otherwise, it's all sophisticated Sesame humor and bighearted fun here as Oscar, the Count, and crew set off to rescue Big Bird, who's on the lam from a family of adoptive dodos. Only one conceivable complaint: The latter crop of Street viewers may miss Elmo, who hadn't been created when Bird first flew into theaters. --Tammy La Gorce

Description

A meddling social worker sends poor Big Bird off to Ocean View, Illinios, for the comforts of family life with his "own kind," the Dodos. But Big Bird is a disaster as a Dodo and, lonely and homesick, he soon sets off on foot for Sesame Street. Can his old friends find him before he runs "afowl" of trouble en route?

5 out of 5 stars It's Sesame Street!.......2007-05-15

This movie is excellent for kids and adults. It reminds us that we can have lots of friends and it doesn't matter what they look like. It reminds us that we can take a break for ourselves and just enjoy life. It also teaches us that when things get rough, you just have to keep going. I have loved this movie since I was a child. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Still good after all these years.......2007-04-10

I recently bought this movie for my friend's child because the mom and I both loved this movie when we were kids. After watching it again, 20 some odd years later, this movie is still entertaining for adults and children. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Flash from the past.......2007-04-07

I was very satisfied with the movie. It came on time for my daughters birthday party. When we sat down and watched it. Well it was like a flash from the past. I remembered watching it at the same age as my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Sesame.......2007-01-22

I grew up watching this movie, and looked around for a long time for this film, and finally I found it. Having not watched it for over 10 years, I worried it may have lost some of its humor and charm to maturity and "growing up". I am delighted to say it's even funnier now that I'm older and can understand some of the clever, witty humor that passed over my head during much younger years. I laughed out loud, and even sang along to the songs.

This movie is funny for the whole family - it really is. It has all your favorite characters you loved growing up, and more! It has the classic, simple humor and enjoyment you just can't seem to find in television and movies today.

If you or your children enjoy Sesame Street, this is the best movie to have. The memories have stuck with me all these years, and I know it'll do the same for all who watch.

4 out of 5 stars how much fun can you stand?.......2007-01-10

Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before "Just Say No," when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. In 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like "Just Say Blow." Even New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael liked it (the movie, that is), adding that it was "an exploitation slapstick comedy, rather than a family picture, such as Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety--which means that it's dirtier, wilder, and sillier." The story has to do with bumbling potheads Cheech & Chong searching for primo bud, while being tailed by a team of inept law-enforcement officers, led by Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach). Sample dialogue: When a cop pulls them over to ask if they are any illegal substances in his vehicle, Cheech replies: "Not any more, man." Up in Smoke is an irresistibly silly and charming movie that--despite, or perhaps because of, the national furor over drug use--plays today like a relic from a bygone era, a sweeter, more open, more innocent period in our history. --Jim Emerson

One of the funniest movies ever made. I'm still using references from this movie to this day. The real sad thing is, with the PC world we live in today, we may never see another movie like it.

5 out of 5 stars Cheech & Chong's first movie goes out with a bang.......2006-05-23

Cheech & Chong already had a bunch of albums under their belts since 1971, so they weren't exactly new when Up in Smoke hit the theaters in September, 1978. I had often seen this movie on network TV, unfortunately, it was so drastically butchered because they had to censor a lot, not to mention all the commercials. But of course I had to get this movie on VHS or DVD. I ended up with the DVD, which has some bonus features, including a bunch of unused clips, and even audio commentary from Lou Adler and Cheech Marin about the movie, and I actually got some useful info from them about the movie, and some trivia along with it (like the VW Beetle Tommy Chong was driving with the Rolls Royce radiator strapped on the front near the beginning of the film actually belonged to Jack Nicholson).

It seemed only natural Lou Adler would direct this film, after all, the Cheech & Chong albums were produced by Adler (and released on his Ode label, which included various music acts like Carole King and the psychedelic band Spirit). And it's a fantastic film full of laughs. Much of what I want to say I can't say here because it won't get posted (because of the content), but it's basically two hippies trying to escape the law, get deported to Mexico, return to America in a van made of marijuana, and enter a rock band contest. Speaking of which, there is this scene during the "Rock Fight" (where these punk rock bands play) there was this one singer who so badly wanted to be Mick Jagger, it about hurts, and the audience started throwing beer cans at him (and the music sounded like a Stones ripoff). But of course, at the end was Cheech & Chong performing "Earache My Eye" (as Alice Bowie in this movie). This cut originally appeared on their Wedding Album (1974), but of course it's only the musical part that was included on this film. And speaking of the music, while Saturday Night Fever capitilized on the disco craze, Up in Smoke seemed to pick up on the punk rock craze. Both styles of music came out around the same time (though disco was much more popular in America because it was the moneymaker) and pretty much brought an end to the prog rock and psychedelia that came before it. What's really strange is Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong were quite a bit older than the real musicians involved in the punk rock scene.

Up in Smoke is truly a great movie, and so is its following, Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, so make sure you get both.

The production values aren't the greatest here, but this adaptation does capture some of the ebullient, hilarious anarchy of Douglas Adams's book. Arthur Dent discovers that his friend, Ford Prefect, isn't human at all but an alien on assignment, writing for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Many of Adams's delicious asides are dropped off here, like the woman who figures out the meaning of life right at the moment that she gets blown up with the rest of the Earth, but it retains what it can. Sure, the book was better, and the realization of Zaphod Beeblebox and Trillian are, well, just different, but it's a great introduction to the series for the uninitiated. --Keith Simanton

Description

With the galaxy's best-selling tour guide and a good towel, earthling Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (actually from planet Betelgeuse) are transported, among other places, to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and back to the beginning of time.

5 out of 5 stars Worth saving the Earth for..........2007-06-18

If you must purchase a DVD copy of the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy this year ...make it this one! It totally blows away the Disney version that was excreted out a few years back. The story line follows the original book pretty closely, and the acting is so much better that one wonders why the participants in the newer release are allowed to continue living.
Sure it has its small problems here and there, things like lighting and costumes that could use less paint...but still, noticing these things in the first place are a sign that youre taking life too seriously and need to lighten up. This is just a riot that will have you laughing out loud.
The humor and interaction of the actors with the plot,(That acting thing again) will have you thinking about the movie later, causing you to laugh at inappropriate times...like meeting a blind date...or recieving sentencing from a Judge.
If youre a fan of Douglas Adams masterpiece of humor and irony, and havent seen this yet...hurry the hell up and get a copy before the Vogons show up.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the film, this is the definitive version!.......2007-06-12

I read the book, saw the film first and then took a gander at this 1981 lost gem. The comedy delivery in the TV series is crisper; never mind the fact that the effects were substandard. The film felt a bit rushed, while this 6-episode series perfectly captures the essence of the book. In fact, if you were to break this down Dr. Jack-style you would end up purchasing this DVD for two main reasons:

1. Douglas Adams himself took an active role in the production of this series;

2. Adams wrote the part of Arthur Dent specifically with Simon Jones in mind.

5 out of 5 stars So much better than the remake.......2007-01-07

Sure the special effects stink and it is British Sci-fi (the effects REALLY stink), but Douglas Adams was involved in the whole thing, and it shows. Some of the best parts of the books were left out of the remake. And one place the effects shine is the Guide itself. It looks like computer grapics, but it's not.

Definately quirky British sci-fi humor, but easily some of the best to come out of the BBC.

5 out of 5 stars The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.......2007-01-05

If you like British Comedy, then you will love this DVD.

simply hilarious.
Whatever you do before, during or after watching this show or reading this book, don't panic and don't forget to bring a towel.

What is it about hitchhikers that makes them such a sure-fire bet for horror? This question is addressed in the final segment of Creepshow 2, another Stephen King-George Romero collaboration. "The Hitchhiker" is the simplest and best of the three tales on display here, with Lois Chiles as a cheating wife who just can't seem to get rid of a hitchhiker... no matter how hard she tries. The collection gets off to a slow start with "Old Chief Wood'n Head," a sleepy story of Native American justice. "The Raft" is a passable teens-in-peril number, but it worked better on the page than on screen. Romero adapted the King stories but emphatically did not direct, which accounts for the drop-off from the kicky fun of the first Creepshow. King appears as a dimwitted truck driver--a foreshadowing of Maximum Overdrive? In any case, this one's for diehard fans only. --Robert Horton

1 out of 5 stars CHEAP LOOKING CREEP.......2007-04-12

Not once has anyone ever seen such a collection of low-budget wierdness. You can't blame the actors; they are pretty good. Blame the lame storylines, lousy music, and stupid props.
Just trust me. Not scary, not thrilling, not worth the time. The only thing great here was the cute topless girl, to be honest.

5 out of 5 stars I feel the need, the need... for WEED!.......2007-01-07

The original Creepshow was a landmark in horror film history,(did I review that one yet?) and the second installment only adds to the glory of the first. It had 3 stories instead of 5 like the first one, but that's probably because they are longer tales. When I look back at the history of horror films, this one is always one of the firstor should i say second that I think of. This is a must have for any collector or film lover.

One last thing... Thanks for the ride, lady!

4 out of 5 stars not as good as the orginal, but still good.......2006-11-20

this edition of Creepshow brings another tide of terror and fear to your DVD collection. There are three stories in this film:

1.Old Chief Woodenhead-an old wooden Indian comes to life and gets revenge on a group of hoodlums that murder his creators. An old-fashioned scare-up.

2.The Raft-Five friends go out to a secluded lake for fun,but are soon trapped by a malavolent monster in the lake.

3.The Hitchhiker-A woman is put through a terrible ordeal when a man she runs over keeps coming back to life. Thanks for the ride, lady!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy disk for an under-rated film........2006-07-15

Considering how this seems to be one of the lesser-appreciated films from the 1980s, I find it a pleasent surprise that they would go back and make a special-edition disk with some nice special features, a making-of mini-documentary and a filmmakers commentary, both of which I had a lot of fun watching and listening to. Other lesser-known films from the 1980s that got some really cool special feats on their DVD disks are: CAT'S EYE, CHOPPING MALL, CHEERLEADER CAMP, THE STUFF, DOLLS, SOCIETY, ROCK & RULE, FIRE & ICE and TIME RIDER.

I do have a few disapointments with this movie, both of which have to do with the fact that they were working on a limited budget back when they made this movie. The first is, as most know, the fact that this film has only three tales, while the first had five. The other thing is that the first film had lots of comic book touches throughout, such as pages turning across the screen, narritive captions shown on screen, weird comic book lighting in the backrounds at certain climative parts, even scenes shown in seperate panels at certain moments. Well, this film has none of that, the stories are just shown in the same way you'd show a regular movie.

Still, the stories are great for what they are. I'd say they're as good as the ones shown in the first film, and I'm glad to own this disk. The stories are:

OLD CHEIF WOODENHEAD: Three young punks in a decrepit desert town rob and kill two elderly store owners, only to have their wooden cigar indean come to life and exact revenge. The fact that it's the wooden indean that avenges the couple and not the people themselves who come back from the dead, as would normally be the case in this type of story, earns this tale at least a few originality points.

THE RAFT: Based on an earlier Stephen King story found in the Skeleton Crew short story collection. Four college students spend a day on a raft in the middle of a remote lake, only to find themselves preyed upon by a black blob lurking in the water that likes human flesh and can slip through the cracks between the boards. In my opinion the best of the three.

THE HITCHHIKER: The story that is probably the most like the classic E.C. comic horror tales. A woman driving home late at night accidentally runs over a hitchhiker. Unfortunately for her, the guy comes back and wants revenge, and she can never seem to get away from him no matter how far she drives. It's like this one episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE turned pure horror as opposed to subtle suspense.

If you're a horror fan, check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars should be in your collection, if you call yourself an 80's horror movie fan..........2006-07-06

Creepshow 2 contains-

1.)three cost effective stories, first is mediocre, but the other two are great.
2.)an EXCELLENT animated wraparound featuring the creep, a weird kid, and his run-in with some bullies. reminds you of late eighties saturday morning cartoons. my favorite part of the movie.
3.)cool/cheesy music.
4.) good acting for such a low budget movie.
5.) great locations. really convincing.
you see a desert town, a mountain lake, and the icy highways of Maine.
6.) good monster effects in the raft sequence and a great mutilated corpse in the hitch hiker. They did really well with such a small budget. the oil slick is scary. don't believe what the detractors say.
but....
1.) this deluxe edition's commentary and bonus documentary are lame. I thought they made this movie look bad but....................Creepshow 2 is a great movie. Recommended.

Amazon.com essential video

This subtle, existential character study of an emotionally distant outcast (Nicholson) forced to confront his past failures remains an intimate cornerstone of American '70s cinema. Written and directed with remarkable restraint by Bob Rafelson, the film is the result of a short-lived partnership between the filmmaker and Nicholson--the first was the zany formalist exercise, Head, while the equally impressive King of Marvin Gardens followed Five Easy Pieces. Quiet and full of long, controlled takes, this film draws its strength from the acutely detailed, nonjudgmental observations of its complex protagonist, Robert Dupea--an extremely crass and frustrated oil worker, and failed child pianist hiding from his past in Texas. Dupea spends his life drinking beer and sleeping with (and cheating on) his annoying but adoring Tammy Wynette-wannabe girlfriend, but when he learns that his father is dying in Washington State, he leaves. After the film transforms into a spirited road movie, and arrives at the eccentric upper-class Dupea family mansion, it becomes apparent that leaving is what Dupea does best--from his problems, fears, and those who love him. Nicholson gives a difficult yet masterful performance in an unlikable role, one that's full of ambiguity and requires violent shifts in acting style. Several sequences--such as his stopping traffic to play piano, or his famous verbal duels with a cranky waitress over a chicken-salad sandwich--are Nicholson landmarks. Yet, it's the quieter moments, when Dupea tries miserably to communicate and reconcile with his dying father, where the actor shows his real talent--and by extension, shows us the wounded little boy that lurks in the shell of the man Dupea has become. --Dave McCoy

4 out of 5 stars "Life's Too Short".......2007-07-05

Jack Nicholson plays Bobby, a man who will only have life his way. Much like Camus' 'The Stranger' or Hemingway's return home soldier in "A Soldier's Story," Bobby lives for the moment. He goes through women at whim and convenience, and he doesn't like to waste any precious time.

At the beginning he hooks up with a friend to work in the oil fields. In one of the early days on the job, they get stuck in traffic. His friend sees that they'll be late for work, whereas Bobby can only see wasted time. So he does what no one else would do: He leaves the driver's seat and climbs a truck moving a piano. Once he uncovers it, he starts to play. As soon as he finds the song he wants, traffic starts moving again, taking him to a new destination. Se la vie.

The movie challenges convention. In a famous restaurant scene, Bobby, who has decided to pick up two women in distress along the way, has an interesting way of getting what he wants when he asks for whole wheat toast to go with his omelette. But real affairs have to do with his sister who is a recording pianist artist. When visiting her at the studio, he finds out that their father has had several strokes and is in poor health. Because he wants to, he goes to visit, and the results show us someone who refuses to put up with convention when it doesn't suit him.
Yet, a scene with his ailing father suggest that he is also living a lie, one that exposes a calloused to vulnerability.

'Five Easy Pieces' is
