5 out of 5 stars The First Time Jeff Kober scared the Bejeezus out of me.......2007-05-19

I can't understand the low ratings for this film. I will always remember it for its odd but attractive cast, the strange twists and novel occult storyline and for the first appearance to me of Jeff Kober who went on to scare me by turning up in many movies and tv shows including Buffy and Kindred the Embraced. This movie made me laugh and yelp. Watching this movie was the first time I appreciated being in a crowded movie theater because the howls and laughter of the young audience really enhanced the experience.

in Stephen King's Maine, and and The First Power debuted as the showcase in our small film festival. Ten Horror buffs were glued to the screen for the duration of the film. When the The First Power ended,a standing ovation was at hand! This Horror film is just that good.
The plot of a demonic killer is nothing new,but the presentation of Patrick Channing was something quiet different. This young man was destined from birth to follow the left-handed path. Born of an incestuous relationship,he was reared in an environment that did nothing, but encourage him to fall from grace and become the instument of evil. Veteran actor,Jeff Kober,in the role of Channing, armed the character with all the attributes of a Satanic desciple, more than willing to the bidding of the Dark Lord. Channing slaughtered with a glee, showing no mercy to victim,be it,adult or child.
Enter Detective Russell(Lou Diamond Phillips) Logan,a cop with a history of nabbing serial killers. Logan was having no luck at all with the "Pentagram Killer",as Channing was hailed in the press, when psychic Tess Seton(Tracy Griffith) began to have contact with Channing in her own special way-through telepathy. She warned Logan of Channings whereabouts and then..................Well,you will have to view The First Power to find out! Don't miss this one folks,it is a scarefest that you won't soon forget!!!

5 out of 5 stars UNFORGETTABLE CHILLER.......2006-11-28

One of the most chilling and memorable movies I have since in years. This ranks right up there with Silence of the Lambs. This movie deserves a sequal and hopefully someday we will be granted a sequal that is as memorable as the first. I have watched this movie many times and I have never grown tired of it. Everytime I have a friend over that has not seen it I play it for them or lend it to them and all are glad I did. I have not heard one bad comment about this movie nor have I ever heard of anyone being disappointed in it. Don't bother renting it just buy it because you will definately want to see it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Piggy Piggy.......2006-09-10

Whispered wishes for a sequel to this groundbreaking film have been uttered for years now. I know I can't be the only fan of this movie that would love to see how this cop turned out 10 years later and I think not only would Lou Diamond Phillips enjoy the heck out of the role, it would probably do well to reserrect his career. I doubt Jeff Kober would turn down a chance to come back either. His character is so memorable as a villain I've put it right up there with Hopkin's Hannibal. I thought he was that good, his look, his voice, his sick laugh, that cold dead stare...no words, Jeff, you played it perfectly. When I saw him playing that wimp in Vin Diesel's A Man Apart, I shuttered to think he has to take crappy roles like that now. He should be a huge player. I just shrugged it off and invisioned him cutting Diesel ear to ear with that blade of his while saying "we're going to go through a very small door, and we're going to go through backwards...that's why I say the prayers in reverse." Then I look back at the screen only to see Kober cowering and I couldn't buy into it.

Start the sequel off right and kill off that dorky redhead. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. You'd have to bring her back though because it would be an awesome way to get Logan's attention in the story line. Maybe he's a washed out detective or maybe he's not even a cop at all anymore...then he sees his old psychic love interest just got waxed by somebody that likes to carve inverted pentagrams into his victims...and suddenly he's reminded "how's the stomach buddy boy?" Anyone feeling me out there? Give us a sequel. It's about darn time!

Anyway, it's all here including the already mentioned awesome score from Copeland. Just buy this one. Don't even bother renting it anymore. You've already spent too much at the video store on it anyways. You could have owned it 10 times over by now.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced supernatural thriller.......2006-06-13

You can only see a movie for the first time once and so I have to admit that THE FIRST POWER worked on me the first time I saw it in theaters. It moved with such lightning speed that I didn't have time to ponder its snowballing silliness. The director, Robert Resnikoff, knows how to construct an action film--the cinematography is first rate and the editing superb-- he just doesn't know when to stop. There are car chases, horse and buggy chases, foot chases and innumerable shoot-outs, and at one point the killer even brandishes a ceiling fan as a rather laughable weapon and all the action movie huggery-muggery sits rather uneasily on top of the supernatural elements.Lou Diamond Philips, though a tad young-looking to be such a seasoned detective, gives a competent performance. Jeff Kober is obviously having fun playing the killer and it shows; he has a toothy menace that's suitably creepy. Probably the best thing going for THE FIRST POWER is a truly unnerving and effective soundtrack from Stewart Copeland. The director pulls off some nasty mind-trips on the character played by Philips, one where he wakes to find his apartment seemingly covered in blood and another in a confessional booth when he goes to get some answers from a local priest.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific double bill DVD.......2007-06-10

I got this DVD for Messiah of Evil, which I've seen before, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying The Devil's Nightmare almost as much. The Devil's Nightmare is an Italian origin Succubus tale, where a group of travelers (including two gorgeous Euro-babes) wind up in a creepy mansion (with the ugliest wallpaper ever) and are picked off by big-haired, big-cheekboned and bare-bellied Erika Blanc. How come my vacations are never like this? Highlights include lesbian lovemaking, a sleeping cat that's supposed to be impaled, Ms. Blanc's gonzo performance, and the greatest ending ever.

I love Messiah of Evil. It's really unique in it's weirdness. The story involves a woman played by beautiful, doe-eyed Marianna Hill (The Baby) searching for her missing artist father in a creepy California beach town called Point Dune. There she learns of a legend of The Blood Moon, where the moon turns red and drives the local yokels to crazed cannibalism. Played totally straight and absolutely devoid of humor, Messiah has a dreamlike feel similar to Carnival of Souls (and maybe Let's Scare Jessica to Death), but still different. It's one of the few horror movies that has given me nightmares. As mentioned in other reviews, the supermarket and movie theater sequences are just awesome, and former Price is Right model Anitra Ford is particularly enjoyable for her jaded non-reactions in her hitchhiking scene.

Nightmare is slightly letterboxed and looks good, but, as mentioned in another review, the sound sucks. I had to crank my TV to hear it, and then it gets distorted. Messiah is full-frame, OK/pretty good image quality (with a little better sound than Nightmare). Messiah appears to be mastered from a video source. There are some brief bios in the main menu as well. Great fun for a good price- check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2006-01-12

[Note: I have only seen "Messiah of Evil"].

I approached "Messiah of Evil" without expecting much, but the movie delivered a great deal more than expected. Considering the relatively unknown status of this film, it has many standout psychological horror scenes. The scene in the supermarket is genuinely disturbing. And the scene in the movie theater terrified me for reasons I don't fully understand (and few movies frighten me). And who can deny the wonder of the off-the-wall "beach-mouse" scene?

This is an unconventional zombie movie with genuine artistic value (as far-fetched as it sounds).

5 out of 5 stars I am please to see others really appreciate these films.......2005-12-27

Messiah of Evil is an excellent film, I rented years ago on VHS and was so blown away, then I forgot the name of it. When I came across it on DVD I was very happy. This film has such a quite, warm, Dario Argento feeling to it. The Art director Jack Fisk's (long time David Lynch Friend) work is great in this film. The supermaket scene stands out in my mind as one of the best scenes in horror.
Devils nightmare is a very funny film. But don't let that put you off, the scene with the bus driver eating that banquet prepared by the Succubus is classic. This guy was eating the way you are suppose to really eat when no one is looking.
I have both these films several times over on different dvds including this one. Easily worth the money, buy it.
BTW Dario Argento is not the Director, but it definately has his feel to it, pretty strange.

5 out of 5 stars Great Combo.......2005-03-10

Both these films are great (yet widely unknown) horror flicks that deserve more attention than a lot of trash that sells better. I've been a huge fan of The Devil's Nightmare for years, and Messiah of Evil was a very pleasant surpise as well. I'm biased, and so I only have good to say about both of these movies. BUT, I have to report one thing about the quality of The Devil's Nightmare on this DVD: I have collected several cuts of the film over the years and I find that the audio here is not nearly as good as even some video versions I've got (the widely available Redemption version, for example, has better). The picture is ok (really no better than Redemption's video), and as much of the scenes as I've ever found are also there, so if you weigh in the fact that you can have Messiah of Evil as a bonus, this DVD isn't too bad a deal.

5 out of 5 stars An Uncanny, Poetic Masterpiece.......2004-03-26

This review is of *Messiah of Evil*.

The five stars are for the film itself, and not for the DVD transfer. Though poor, it is still an enormous improvement over the third-rate VHS release. I agree, though, with those who feel that this film deserves a better release, although I won't be holding my breath awaiting it. I take issue, however, with those who criticize the acting and the pace of the film. Anyway, on to the review....

Who knew what darkness lay in the hearts of Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, the screenwriting team that brought us *American Graffiti* and *Howard The Duck*? Huyck also directed this tale of atavistic resurgence run amok.

A young woman travels to a small seaside town to search for her missing father, a local artist. There, she meets a curious *ménage a trois*: An effete researcher into ancient legends and his two female traveling companions. The uncooperative townspeople from whom they seek information resemble somnambulists, especially at night, when they gather on the beach and gaze longingly out to sea under a reddening moon. Other weird and terrifying portents soon appear: An old drunkard warns the heroine that, here, the corpses must be burned, not buried; a man offers a hitchhiker a mouse--when she refuses it, he eats it alive; tears of blood drip from the townspeople's eyes; live insects and vermin spew forth from their mouths. As the heroine and her companions delve deeper into the mystery, they find themselves engulfed in cataclysmic violence, and the secret of the messiah of evil, as well as the fate of the girl's father, transpires at last.

What this bare synopsis omits completely is the true source of the film's power: Its overwhelming and consistent poetic atmosphere of doom. From the dismal organ and synthesizer music that underpins the heroine's first exploration of her father's empty studio and its strange *trompe l'oeil* murals, to the massed townspeople waiting expectantly on the beach like sleepwalkers in a Delvaux painting, *Messiah of Evil* creates a perfect microcosmic nightmare world. Once seen, it is never to be forgotten: A rare triumph of perfect atmosphere.

3 out of 5 stars The best late Dracula.......2007-05-10

Having recently watched the rather poor 'Scars of Dracula' I wasn't expecting much from this, the last of the Hammer Dracula films to star Christopher Lee. How refreshing to find this is a vast improvement in every respect and I would have given it 3 and 1/2 stars if it had been possible.

Starting like an espionage film with Torrance (William Franklyn) and Inspector Murray (Michael Coles) investigating an MI6 agents capture and torture by a mysterious group. The group it turns out consist of some the most eminent people in the country (the UK). Of course Dracula is at the heart of matters. Dracula keeps himself out of view using the cover of a property development company. He is the head of the company D D Denham. Scotland Yard of course call in Prof. Lorimar Van Helsing and soon we are into more standard Hammer territory.

The other reason the film is so much better than say 'Scars of Dracula' is the return of Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. Once again Christopher Lee's Dracula has an opponent worthy of mention. Cushing delivers another typically intense performance.

OK so this isn't a touch on 'Dracula' (aka Horror of Dracula) or even the first sequel with Christopher Lee 'Dracula Prince of Darkness', but it is far better than I expected, and at the right price I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Final Showdown.......2007-03-20

This came on the tail end of Hammer studios last attempts to regenerate the magic that began with "The Curse of Frankenstein" and "The Horror of Dracula", so I wasn't expecting a masterpiece.

No matter how absurdly cheesy and ridiculous these movies got--and boy, did they--they never lost a certain magic, a black erotism, an innovative take on good and evil, the former represented by the genuinely nice but tough Peter Cushing/Van Helsing and the masterfully evil, pimped out Count Dracula played by absolute master Christopher Lee. And how can you turn down these voluptuous 70's, disco hip, ultra-cleavaged female vampires?

The plot of this one is absolutely irredeemable and, yes, worthy of the most scathing and mocking criticism. I still liked it though; the Frank Zappa/Satanist Guards with Fro Action, Dracula's sorta vague and haphazard attempt to destroy the world with..petri dishes? And the indispensable Professor Julian, obviously an actor who memorized some Lovecraft between scenes, spouting off about obscene rites and repeating his assertion that Dracula's plot will leave out "nothing too vile!", getting himself into such a frenzy that Van Helsing has to b**chslap him a few times to get him straight.

And the scene in Dracula's new digs, where he runs his Satanic empire with a false Romanian accent: not even bothering to take off his cape! When Van Helsing enters and they stare at each other, the whole lineage of the series and the fury right there between them, separated only by a mysterious lamplight that does nothing to disguise Dracula's face at all...Good vs. Evil. Magnificent.

Of all the ways for this Shaft of Counts to go out, it had to be bramble bushes. That I had a problem with, but hey. Van Helsing took painstaking care that he was dead--he even stole his ring! Great movie.

1 out of 5 stars unimpressive.......2007-01-05

I thought I was ordering the Brides of Dracula under a different title. I was not impressed with this movie. After viewing it I can see why I never heard of it.

3 out of 5 stars This movie is a good farewell to Hammer's Drac series.......2006-05-31

We'd had enough of 19th century period pieces about the Prince of Darkness and besides compared to horrors like germ warfare a spook that kills a few good looking chicks isn't threatening enough so nothing wrong with turning Drac into the instigator of a plague to wipe out all humanity. Lastly, I like the way the lady vampires are rather lesbian as to be a lesbian means to be satanic and to go against the Holy Bible (Romans 1:21-27).

2 out of 5 stars "Rites" not done right.......2006-02-07

After the success of "Horror of Dracula," Hammer Horror apparently decided to wring the last buck out of the Dracula franchise. The final chapter is "Satanic Rites of Dracula," a limp horror flick that is rather boring when it's not silly. Throw in some naked breasts and dated haircuts too.

Scotland Yard uncovers a rural cult of satanists, and learn that their members include prominent scientists and politicians. It would be a scandal if they made an error, so they ask Professor Larimer Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) to investigate. Van Helsing pays a visit to one of the cultists (his old college buddy) and discovers a horrific secret: a new, superstrain of the Black Death.

Even worse, Van Helsing finds that his old nemesis Dracula (Christopher Lee) has returned from the grave (how many times is it now?) and is the leader of this cult. While Scotland Yard battles hordes of vampiric women hidden in the cult's house, Van Helsing is taken prisoner by Dracula himself -- and his granddaughter Jessica may be Dracula's next victim.

Horror isn't supposed to be silly, and it's not supposed to be tedious. "Satanic Rites of Dracula" is both. It feels as if Hammer Horror was running out of potential Dracula scenarios, so they threw in some cheesy satanism and lots of because-we-can nudity. (Apparently to stake a female vampire, you have to pull open her shirt first)

Worst of all, very little of it makes sense -- why does Dracula want to kill everyone, and thus himself? Uh... he just does, okay? That's about the whole explanation. And the illogical storyline is bogged down by really bad dialogue ("My revenge has spread over centuries and has just begun!").

Most of the movie revolves around Scotland Yard's idiot inspectors bumbling around, getting into trouble and barely escaping those vampire sexpots. Occasionally they stake somebody, but not often enough. It takes most of the movie for Dracula to even show up, and when he does, Lee looks kind of peevish, like he resents being in this cheesy movie. Somehow, I can't blame him.

It's especially a shame because Lee and Cushing are the sole bright points. Lee was as impressive and creepy as ever, with his sonorous voice and seductive bloodsucking. And Cushing had the toughness and steeliness to play a good Van Helsing, although they water down his character by giving him a twerpy granddaughter.

It's a good thing "Satanic Rites of Dracula" was the last of Hammer's Dracula movies, because this one was a pathetic enough finale to the series. Lee and Cushing are the only reasons to watch at all.

Lucio "King of the Eyeball Gag" Fulci made his name with a series of gory, gooey horror epics, and The Beyond stands above all as his outré masterpiece. The largely incoherent plot has something to do with a turn-of-the-century curse and a doorway to hell in the cellar of an old New Orleans hotel. Fulci shows his usual sensitivity with wooden acting, clumsy dialogue, and buckets of oozing blood and pus, but don't let that get in the way of enjoying this mad tale of zombies from hell invading Earth and eating their way through a cast of humans: crucified martyrs, blind visionaries, creepy hotel handymen, befuddled cops, and a plucky pair of heroes desperately fleeing a horde of hungry undead. The blood-red art direction is eerily beautiful, and Fulci's relentless long takes, punctuated by jolting shock cuts and eruptions of grotesque violence, create a mood of sheer paranoid horror right down to the final, mind-bending image. And don't forget the Fulci claim to fame: eyes are gouged out, eaten away, melted with acid, and (shudder) popped out by a spike through the back of the skull. Yech! If you dare ignore such piddling details as narrative logic and let yourself get carried away on the creepy visuals, it's a deliciously stylish treat, an edgy bit of gothic gore pitched in all its bone-crunching, flesh-ripping, organ-splatting glory. This sadistic, sanguinary hell-spawn tale is for gore-hounds only.

The DVD features chatty but largely jokey commentary by David Warbeck and Catriona MacColl and an alternate German credits sequence featuring Fulci's preferred sepia-tinged prologue (but no alternate footage). --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Cult indeed.......2007-05-13

Getting the obvious out of the way, this is a movie for B Horror splatter fans, not for mainstream horror audiences. This movie, like Fulci's other films, places emphasis on graphic depiction of gore material, while paying little to no attention to plot, script, or acting. He definitely succeeds in giving zombie fans what they want, however if you expect anything more you will be disappointed. The script was particularly bad, and not in a cheesy-but-good B movie sort of way, but riddled with inconsistencies and occasionally just plain dumb. Like for example in the hospital scene with all the zombies it's obvious that the only way to take them down is to shoot them in the head, yet the guy wastes 3-4 bullets on a single zombie, gets it with a headshot, and then repeats the same pattern numerous times. Sure enough he runs out of bullets sooner than he wishes to. Acting is pretty bad too, not very credible at all. You have the typical protagonist who's seeing things others aren't, and of course those things aren't there when someone else checks it out, yet the character doesn't sound convincing at all when she's trying to explain that those things really are there and it's not her imagination. You can almost tell someone told her what to say just minutes before and she's struggling to remember. To summarize, this movie is underdeveloped but thrives on its gore factor which is fairly elevated all things taken into consideration. Don't leave this one out of your zombie film collection.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Italian Classic.......2007-04-11

The Beyond opens with what has become one of my favorite scenes. A strange man is painting pictures of Hell on a canvas in room 36 of an old Louisana hotel. The year is 1927 and the mans name is Sweik. The natives of the town believe that Sweik is placing a curse on thier village through his drawings and what follows is a typical southern stereotype. A lynch mob storms the hotel and constrains Sweik as he is finishing one of his paintings.

The mob then drags him down a spiral staircase into the basement where he meets his fate in the form of being crucified against a wall and then drenched in flesh eating acid. All while that typical annoying as hell gaillo music is playing in the backgound. Kathrine MacColl inherits the hotel where Shiek meet his unfortunate and horrible demise some six odd years later.

The hotel has all sorts of strange occurances, not the least of which is the consistant flooding in the basement. As she is preparing to open the hotel the flooding in the basement starts to present a real problem, thus she calls in a plumber. Joe the Plumber (yes that is the characters actual name) is called in to fix the issue. What he finds is far more serious than leaky pipe...

The reason that this film works is because of it's take no prisoners presentation. Fulci knows what we want to see, and he more than delivers. It works on the same principle that John Carpenter's 'The Fog' works, the events are presented with no context. You never really know why this guy has no head, or why that lady just got an acid bath. Nor do you care. Fulci doesn't raise any questions and he certainly doesn't answer any, but hey, thats ok with me.

5 out of 5 stars Pathetically funny.......2007-03-19

This movie must be praised, but not for the "gory scenes" or "horrifying horror", but simply because IT IS DAMN FUNNY!

It has so many flaws, holes in the script and bad acting that I just couldn't stop laughing.

If you like big, big comedies, you MUST watch Lucio Fulci's movies... Trust me: it is DAMN FUN mock all his Z-quality movies

5 out of 5 stars Fulci lives!.......2007-03-02

I watched this last night for first time after I've been trying to find it for months and absolutely loved it.I will probably watch it again today. This movie is dark, atmospheric and the N.O.L.A setting is great.I can understand why some "pop-horror" fans might not like it,a lot of the story is not explained and stuff just seems to happen out of nowhere but thats the feel Fulci was going for and why I love it.This movie is brutal ,unrelenting and Fulci's goriest.FULCI LIVES!

5 out of 5 stars This movie is awesome.......2007-02-27

If you like flicks like Blood Sucking Freaks, Necromatik, Sinful Dwarf, May, Devil's Rejects, zombie movies, or other goodies of this nature then you'll love this film. This movie shows everything, every bit of gore, with tons of attention paid to detail of the violence. Most of the really intense scenes (there are lots of them) come out of nowhere, and are well worth it when they do. Made by the same guy who made the Italian movie Zombie, but this film blows that one away. Not for the mild horror fan, this one's for us serious disturbing-movie-loving freaks only. If you're a sick and twisted horror fan, don't pass this one up, it will not disappoint. This movie is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2007-02-12

This movie has a an excellent line-up, Humphrey Bogart, and the great Peter Lorre. This is not a very well known film, but I personally enjoyed every minute of it.
Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) is part of a motley group planning to go to Africa, where a friend can help them illegally claim uranium. But trouble arrives: stuffy Harry Chelm (Edward Underdown) and his very imaginative wife Gwen (Jennifer Jones) arrive, and soon they're flirting with Billy and his sensual wife Maria (Gina Lollabrigida).

Even worse, Gwen's "exaggeration" habit is making the gang distrust Billy, thinking that he's withholding information from them. He isn't, of course. But all the personal plots and distrust come to a boil when everyone boards the ship, and Harry reveals that he knows everything about their uranium plot. Now Billy has to save himself and his friends, without Harry being bumped off...

"Beat the Devil" is an all-around satire -- it mocks grabby criminals, pathological liars, stodgy Brits, romance movies, crime capers, and even second-rate boats ("Of course, the captain is drunk!"). In fact, there's very little about this movie that doesn't poke fun at itself, or at the movies of the time.

And since it was adapted by John Huston and Truman Capote, you know that it's being witty as it makes fun. It languidly builds up in a sunny, ruined city where people plot and flirt, and then starts to boil when they get on board the boat. But even engine failures manage to be entertaining when Harry wrecks the oil pump while trying to fix it.

The cast is skilled in that under-the-radar way: Bogart plays a slightly more offbeat version of his noir characters, and Jennifer Jones is hilarious as the ditzy, chattery English girl. Peter Lorre and Robert Morley are also quite good as Bogie's pals, and Underdown plays the insensitive, straight-arrow dunce perfectly. You'll constantly want to smack him.

2 out of 5 stars Bogart himself called it a "mess.".......2006-12-18

The plot, if you can call it that, concerned a group of six stranded adventurers in an Italian port whose plan is to buy up some East African land that supposed1y contains uranium... Double-crossing quickly becomes the name of the game as Bogart and his fellow conspirators (including Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, Gina Lollobrigida, and a seemingly endless parade of bizarre characters) outdo each other in inspired crazy way...

Bogart, trying desperately to maintain his composure, delivered such priceless lines as: 'I'm only in on this because the doctor told me I needed plenty of money. Without money I become dull, listless, and have trouble with my complexion." But his lines weren't the only offbeat ones... In a room where he's being questioned after being captured, while a firing squad goes about its routine work outside, he is asked straight-faced, "Now tell me, do you really know Rita Hayworth?"

The film is one of those rare items that viewers either seem to love or hate, no middle ground accepted... and declared that only the "phonies" thought it was really funny... Many reviewers thought the whole thing was a tasteless joke and decried the waste of time, talent, and money...

In any case, Bogart gave an immensely satisfying performance in his tongue-in-cheek role and the film itself has now become a regular attraction in Bogart film retrospectives... It is also an excellent example of how much Bogart had matured as an actor, since it is not easy to overcome apparently inept material and still give a performance with some meaning and substance...

    4 out of 5 stars Time is a crook.......2006-07-05

You'd think that "Beat the Devil" would be far better known than it is, since it was one of the last movies that Humphrey Bogart did before his untimely death. Maybe that's because Bacall wasn't in it, or maybe it was just too quirky for the masses -- a funny, wry noir-satire, with a gang of rather inept criminals.

As for editions, pretty much none of them are "good" per se. They havne't been cleaned up or restored. But the best one I've seen is Diamond Entertainment's, which has a steady picture and soundtrack, and no splices, crackling, or so on. It's slightly fuzzy as for details, but not so that it isn't watchable or enjoyable.

Though not as respected as it deserves, "Beat the Devil" is a little gem of a Bogart movie, with a witty, satirical script and lots of wild twists. Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Unicorn Video Release.......2005-02-06

I have only seen the 90 minute version, so whether it's inferior to the uncut version, I can't really say. This is one of my favorite Bogart movies however. It's also one of the few old movies with a sense of humor that doesn't seem outdated (to me at least).

Technically speaking this version looks as good as any old movie. The DVD is digitally remastered and features a digital 5.1 surround soundtrack, Dolby digital sound, scene access and interactive menus. I don't have the gear to evaluate the 5.1 or Dolby, but the sound is fine on my tv speakers.

I know that I bought the Unicorn Video version because of the price I paid, but Unicorn Video does not appear anywhere on the DVD case. If you're looking for this version in stores, the cover has a picture of Bogart against a wine colored background with 'Digital Gold Collection' in a gold banner at the top of the case.

5 out of 5 stars Truman Capote and John Huston film a New Yorker cartoon.......2004-10-20

Beat the Devil is a subtle comedy of manners. It's not a big Hollywood film, but a small independent (Bogart's own production company) that happens to have an amazing cast, is directed by one of the best (John Huston), with a Truman Capote screenplay. It's become one of my favorite off-beat films and can't recommend it enough.

What's not to like? Quite a bit if you read some of the disgruntled reviews below! But don't be dissuaded, it's a gem. And remember, Pauline Kael was a huge fan of this movie; if she's a reviewer you trust, that might be enough for you.

Other reviewers have outlined the plot so I won't go into that, and in any case, that's not the reason to watch this movie. The plot's certainly as good as any amusing Hitchcock film, with its MacGuffin and several surprising twists and comic suspense subplots unraveling throughout.

There are subtleties to Beat the Devil that apparently escape many reviewers, who perhaps wanted another formulaic 'noir' classic or some kind of slapstick laff-fest. If you like New Yorker cartoons, you'll likely enjoy this movie as much as I do: I've watched this movie at least 5 times and still love it.

Beat the Devil escapes categorization, except to say that it's a brilliant comic screenplay performed with skill and insight by several of the best actors of the 50s. Robert Morley is sublimely funny, and brings out the best in Peter Lorre and the other criminals in the gang.

Jennifer Jones is sexy and charming in her role as a compulsive liar, as is her classic and earnestly doltish husband. They reek naive British charm and are marvelous together, providing a poignant tension in contrast to the gang of conniving scoundrels.

Bogart himself has one foot in each boat, and much of the film revolves around the conflict he suffers in this double life, playing each off the other. As in most Bogie flicks, he's hilariously dry and sly, with lollapalooza actress Gina Lollobrigida playing his scheming wife. Everyone's on the make except Harry Chelm, Jennifer Jones' character's husband.

There isn't the passion of a Bogie/Bacall film, and it's not the classic noir we all love with Bogart, so don't be disappointed.

One word of warning: Beat the Devil slipped into the public domain, so the DVDs on the market are of varying quality. The one I have is ok, but only just... it's like watching an old movie, with herky jerky pops and cuts and some noise. It doesn't bother me that much though, and emphasizes the 'rare find' quality if you're feeling charitable. If you're a digital maniac, you'll be better served watching something Criterion's had its way with.

Beat the Devil is one of the most unusual 50s movies I can think of, and I don't normally watch any movie as often as I've watched this one. With the possible exception of other Bogart classics.

This powerful performance was recorded at the London Astoria on November 4, 2005. The show captures the resurrected band storming through all their classics including "The Prince", "Sucking My Love" and "Lightning To The Nations". The DVD includes an exclusive interview with the band and as a bonus, the making of "All Will be Revealed" filmed by Mike De Jager has been included. Deeply affected by Diamond Head's idiosyncratic style, metal legends Metallica have covered "Am I Evil?", "It's Electric" and "Helpless", all of which are featured on the DVD. Both Metallica and Megadeth have famously cited the band as an important early influence.

5 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video".......2006-10-16

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.
