Though Hannibal Rising's Lecter (Gaspard Ulliel) is a pussycat compared to Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, this sequel's story of revenge is grizzly enough to satisfy lovers of Thomas Harris's epic tale. After young Hannibal (Aaron Thomas) is forced to watch his little sister, Mischa (Helena Lia Tachovska), devoured by starving soldiers in his homeland Lithuania, Hannibal vows to avenge his sister's death by slaying those who committed not only war crimes against the Lecters, but also against other families during WW II. In detailing Hannibal's revenge plan, the film investigates the psychological implications of witnessing cannibalism to justify Hannibal's insatiable appetite for human flesh. The most interesting aspect of Hannibal Risingits analytical connections drawn between Hannibal's childhood traumas and his murderous adult obsessionsis also the film's weak point. The links oversimplify Lecter's complex character. For example, though titillating to see flashbacks of Lecter's sister hacked up and boiled while Lecter visits a Parisian meat market, the reference is too obvious. One learns why he excels in his medical school classes dissecting cadavers, and we're given explicit explanation for why he slices off and eats his victims' cheeks. The story only complicates when Hannibal interacts with his sexy Aunt, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li). When Murasaki educates him in the art of beheading, the viewer sees Hannibal's sword fetish as a manifestation of physical lust. --Trinie Dalton

A lot could've gone wrong in Red Dragon, but the movie exceeds expectations. Replacing the acclaimed Manhunter as an "official" entry in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, this topnotch thriller--the second adaptation of Thomas Harris's first Lecter novel--returns to the fertile soil of The Silence of the Lambs, serving as both prequel and heir to the legacy of Lecter as portrayed, with mischievous menace, by the great Anthony Hopkins. Familiar faces and locations reappear (along with Lambs screenwriter Ted Tally) as Lecter coaches FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) in tracking the horrific "Tooth Fairy" killer (Ralph Fiennes), whose transformative killing spree is inspired by a William Blake painting. By dutifully serving Harris's potent material, Tally and director Brett Ratner craft a suspenseful film worthy of its predecessors, bringing Hopkins full circle as one of the cinema's all-time greatest villains. With overtones of Psycho and a superb supporting cast, Red Dragon succeeds against considerable odds. --Jeff Shannon

Audrey Hepburn's last Oscar nomination was for this adaptation of Frederick Knott's famed stage thriller about a blind woman, a con man (Alan Arkin), and a doll full of heroin. Thanks to Hepburn's husband, a photographer who does a good deal of traveling, she's unknowingly come into possession of said doll, which was given to him on a plane by a comely young drug runner who winds up dead. The murderous Arkin, aided by sympathetic henchman Richard Crenna, will let nothing stand in the way of his obtaining it, even if it comes down to assaying multiple "personalities" in order to visit and terrorize Hepburn; Crenna is unwillingly enlisted to help. However, the "world's champion blind lady" (as Hepburn sardonically states) is more than up to the task of defending herself in her basement Manhattan apartment in a heart-stopping climax that to this day still defines the way horror movies with jack-in-the-box psychos are made. Despite the obvious staginess of it all (the entire action takes place in Hepburn's apartment), it still works magnificently, thanks to Hepburn's steely will and Arkin's deadly, sadistic madman. A helpful hint: turn out all the lights when you watch it; theaters back in 1967 did so, killing the guiding lights during the film's last 15 minutes. We can't tell you why, but trust us, it's worth it. --Mark Englehart
Description
A photographer's blind wife, trapped in her New York apartment by an evil trio who are ready to murder to retrieve a heroin-filled doll hidden in her apartment, cleverly outwits them. Music by Henry Mancini. Based on the long running Broadway play by Frederick Knott.

Halloween is one of the great modern horror films, but as a franchise its track record has been spotty at best, painfully bad at worst. Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later, directed by horror vet Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, House), won't displace John Carpenter's original but it might help you forget the films in between. Miner certainly has: the film begins as if sequels 3 through 6 never happened. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role for the first time in almost two decades) faked her death and is now a single mom and headmistress of an exclusive California private school. She's also a secret alcoholic who lives in fear of her homicidal brother-bogeyman Michael Myers. Guess who decides to show up for a family reunion? The film begins with classic horror-movie exposition (the deserted college campus, Michael's escape, Laurie's waking nightmares) accomplished with some humor and style, but it's all setup for the second half, a driving roller coaster of stalk-and-slash thrills. There's little of the self-conscious genre referencing of Scream and at times the film is a little far-fetched--it is a slasher movie about a knife-wielding homicidal maniac who won't stay dead, after all--but Curtis transforms Laurie from a shrieking victim into an empowered, determined horror-movie heroine who's learned a thing or two from the previous films. Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, and TV cutie Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek) costar, and the script received uncredited polish from Scream writer Kevin Williamson; Curtis's mom, Janet Leigh, pops up in a cameo. --Sean Axmaker
Description
This smart and suspenseful thriller scares up a bone-chilling good time with original scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis (TRUE LIES, HALLOWEEN I&II) and a hot cast of hip young stars! Now the headmistress of a private school, Laurie Strode (Curtis) is still struggling with the horrifying, 20-year-old memories of the maniacal killer Michael Myers ... when he suddenly reappears with a vengeance! And this Halloween, his terror will strike a whole new generation! Laurie's rebellious son (Josh Hartnett -- THE FACULTY), his girlfriend (Michelle Williams -- TV's DAWSON'S CREEK), and the school security guard (LL COOL J -- WOO, B.A.P.S.) will become Michael's newest victims unless Laurie can conquer her greatest fears and put evil in its place once and for all! The time has come again for you to experience the frightening fun of HALLOWEEN -- the motion picture series that totally redefined terror!
Customer Reviews:
AT LAST A SEQUEL WORTH WATCHING!.......2007-06-04
This entry into the halloween series is probably about as good as it is gonna get! After two really really bad installments(parts 5 and 6) we get a pretty darn good sequel "Halloween H20". The best thing about the movie is that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and it makes all the difference. I still don't understand why they keep changing Michael's mask? It looked great in the first movie...why fix what ain't broke? This movie is really a 3 and 1/2 star movie, but they don't have that option. The DVD transfer is good, but I would like to see a 16X9 upgrade someday.
Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film that made her a star.......2007-05-20
In HALLOWEEN H20, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film franchise which made her a star. This is probably the best entry since "Halloween II", in terms of performances and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back as terrorised Laurie Strode. To properly enjoy this film, you have to disregard the 4th, 5th, and 6th films which featured Laurie's daughter, Jamie Lloyd. There is no daughter here, instead we have Laurie's son John (played by Josh Hartnett).
The film picks up 20 years to the day of the original Haddonfield slayings. With a new name and persona, Laurie Strode is the headmistress of a private school in Southern California, yet still living with the daily terror of her past literally coming back to haunt her. Sadistic, unstoppable Michael Myers has tracked down her records and decides a little family reunion is needed, but this time, Laurie vows to ensure it will be the final showdown...
Jamie Lee Curtis perfectly slips back into the role of Laurie, and the rest of the cast is equally fine, including Jamie's legendary mother (Janet Leigh, "Psycho") in a fun cameo as the school receptionist, Josh Hartnett as her son, and Adam Arkin as her boyfriend. There are some brilliant set-ups and action scenes, and the tension is taut.
HALLOWEEN H20 originally set out to close the chapter on Laurie and Michael, but the franchise has continued with "Halloween: Resurrection", again with Jamie Lee Curtis.
Halloween H20-TwentyYears Later-Zsendsational movie-still.......2007-05-15
The cast of actors-charactors blend in so well with suspense-its just unbelievable. Ms.Jamie Lee Curtis and the cameo appearance of her mother working together is very nice to see-and historical (Ms. Lana Turner was in the orginial movie of the notorious thriller, "PSYCHO") and her appearance really contribute to the suspense to the movie-Halloween H20. And seeing LL Cool J acting, WOW! Mr. LL Cool J is a multi-talented performer-he can do it all! I just love this movie.
"I'm not who you think I am." Halloween: H20 - 20 Years Later.......2007-05-13
In 1998, Director Steve Minor put his stamp on the Halloween series. This is the entry, the sequel everyone was looking forward to, the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and when Laurie and Michael see each other again. "I'm not who you think I am." is exactly right, it truely is a great sequel even though it is part 7.
Laurie has a 17 year old son and she is the headmistress of a secluded private boarding school. 20 years after he first attacked her he came back, she thinks her son is the one in danger, he is, but she has more to fear than her son's life. Laurie stops running and faces her fear in the most amazing ending the series has ever seen.
Note that this movie completely ignores parts 3-6 so continuity for this entry as part of the series is completely screwed up. The acting is extra ordinary in this entry, the best acting in the entire series comes from this entry. Jamie gives her strongest performance as Lauries in this entry. And unlike the previous two entries Michael is top notch in this entry, Michael is really scary.
This entry doesn't suffer from much asside from giving LL Cool J a role this entry soars on all levels. The ending where she attempts to grab his hand is the most emotional part of the series.
The bonus feature "Unmasking the Horror" is very informative, but again, Jamie sounds like an idiot in her interviews and everyone else sounds smarter than her which is the exact opposite as on film where she appears to be the smartest person on screen.
In conclusion, this is the definitive ending to one of the longest running horror series. This entry has an A list cast and some great scares. Too bad the series continued on and on and on...
Surprisingly good!.......2007-04-12
I liked it! While nothing can top John Carpenter's original Halloween -- sequels and remakes almost always fall short of our expectations -- H20 is suspensful and good, and the musical score includes a variation of John Carpenter's classic, errie theme as a reminder. Jamie Lee Curtis brings class and authenticity to the film, which is almost as scary as the original Halloween. The film's vibe succeeds without too much gratutious sex and gore, and keeps you on the edge until the end. I agree with the other reviewers who didn't like the other cheap sequels after Halloween II ... they just didn't have the same vibe as the first two films with Jamie Lee. This one is a worthy addition to anyone's Halloween collection.

After an obligatory prologue in which its detective hero suffers a tragic professional setback, Along Came a Spider sets about its business of luring the viewer into its nefarious plot, relying on the magician's technique of misdirection to reveal a double-whammy surprise. The clever, late-coming plot twist is a bit too mechanical but effectively unexpected, making this a satisfying prequel to the hit thriller Kiss the Girls--based on the first of James Patterson's Alex Cross detective novels--and a welcomed addition to a promising movie franchise. It's no better or worse than a good vintage episode of Peter Falk's Columbo, adhering closely to the mystery-thriller's time-honored traditions, but with Morgan Freeman settling comfortably into his role as seasoned sleuth Alex Cross, familiar formula is given fresh vitality.
When a senator's daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Cross into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective's involvement will bring high-profile publicity. Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait... the movie's got a rabbit in its hat... and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve... and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to The Edge) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation. Don't look for much depth of character here, but Along Came a Spider is well served by everyone involved. It's the movie equivalent of a bestseller you'd impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Effective thriller!.......2007-01-15
An intelligent script supports this movie with intriguing double crosses and smart twists of fate, although the information is there in front of us. Don' t blink and pay attention to every single shot. Interesting
psychological puzzle with gratifying results.
movies.......2007-01-04
I found that the movie came in record timing and in excellent condition, thanks
Read the book instead.......2006-12-06
The book was great -- the movie has almost nothing in common with the book. The screen writers really screwed up on this one. If you have read the book, I definitely advise skipping this movie.
Aaaah Morgan Freeman.......2006-11-16
It's all there...drama, action, and suspense. This movie will keep you glued to your seat with all its twists and turns. And Morgan Freeman is a bonus. If a movie has Morgan Freeman in it, then 9 times out of 10 it will be an awesome movie. This is no exception...Great movie.
Plot twists I didn't see coming.......2006-09-15
Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross...Doesn't get much better than that. Monica Potter ...well, look up cute in the dictionary..Her picture is there. Anyway, this had some serious plot twists that somehow all seemed to make sense as they got tied together. Morgan Freeman continues to demonstrate that he is one of the best actors in film today.

It's important to note that Spike Lee's drama is not titled Son of Sam. Summer of Sam doesn't chronicle the killer as much as the times: the blistering hot summer of 1977 when the Big Apple's psyche was taken hostage by the lone gunman. We spot the killer (Michael Badalucco) in his mad ramblings, but the film centers on two friends from the Bronx: Vinny and Ritchie (John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody). Vinny and his wife, Dionna (Mira Sorvino), bury a bad marriage (he cheats at a drop of a hat) in the disco halls of the area. Ritchie returns to the neighborhood sporting punk hair, punk clothes, and a British accent that immediately infuriates the neighborhood boys oozing far too much testosterone. Cops, local mob leaders, and the guys on the street all have ideas who the killer is; neighborhood loners to Reggie Jackson (in the midst of World Series heroism) are on their misguided lists of suspects. When the film looks at how the citizens faced the fearful times, Lee scores with his energetic camerawork and pop soundtrack. Yet the film is banal in its domestic dramatics. The film takes large detours into Vinny's home sex life (stagnant) and Ritchie's extracurricular activities. One of the marriage arguments--though real and well acted--is so long and cliché-ridden you wonder if someone fell asleep in the editing booth. Add the point-blank killings and nonstop vulgarity and you have Lee's most unpleasant film. --Doug Thomas
Description
The dynamic John Leguizamo (SPAWN, EXECUTIVE DECISION) is teamed with Academy Award(R)-winner Mira Sorvino (Best Supporting Actress, 1996, MIGHTY APHRODITE) in an electrifying, must-see movie that takes you back to New York City's infamous summer of 1977! The heat is soaring to record highs, blackouts are filling the streets with looters ... and the murders of a man who calls himself the Son of Sam are gripping the giant city in fear! As friends in a small Italian neighborhood become obsessed with the idea that Son of Sam is someone nearby, the madman's fearsome plague of terror becomes the catalyst that prompts relationships to fall apart and trust to disintegrate into dread! Also starring Adrien Brody (THE THIN RED LINE) and Jennifer Esposito (I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER), this powerful motion picture tells the gritty and hard-edged story about one nightmare season in the city that never sleeps!
Customer Reviews:
Shakey facade for pornography.......2007-04-30
This movie has all the marks of a bad porno movie; one animalistic and unrealistic sex scene after another loosely strewn together with a thin and uninspiring plot. One has a difficult time remembering the basic plot premise when every other scene is one more perversion splashed on the screen as if in attempts to shock us more than the previous scene. If you watch it at all, be sure you have the remote handy to fast-forward. Doing so will help you focus on what little plot their is and lesson the time you waste which you could have spent watching something worthwhile. If the Son of Sam murders of the late 1970's are your interest, you will find precious little about it here so do not bother. It is a very sad that Spike Lee, with hints of true talent, could release something that would not even pass for mediocre pornography - much less serious drama.
Not a big fan of the Spikester.......2007-03-22
but, I do give credit when credits due. The movie was very well done, the cast was sincere and portrayed their characters with a real-ness that was believable. The dumb as dirt New York Italian men, the long suffering woman who can't enjoy sex but are as neurotic as the men who kept them down. And don't forget the humidity, which, I'm sure, if anyone ever did a scientific survey, would show more violence is committed in the sweltering summer than winter. The always entertaining and talented, John Leguizamo adds much to the overall sleazey, horrific, humidity laden story. Enjoy!
Spike lee is a horrible director.......2007-02-01
During the sweltering summer of 1977, the notorious killer Son of Sam set New York City on edge. An accidental encounter with the homicidal maniac sends the life of a philandering Bronx hairdresser named Vinny (John Leguizamo) spinning out of control. As the police and vigilantes hunt the killer, Vinny's life unravels amid a haze of suspicion, drugs and promiscuity.
This film has the distinction of being the hands-down worst film I ever saw in the theater. It's so bad that I use it as a basis of comparison for other bad films "Dead Man on Campus? That's about a 30% Summer of Sam" "Last Action Hero? That's a 75% Summer of Sam" When I saw this film in the theater, about half the audience walked out in disgust and the other half toked up and watched the rest of the film high. I was in neither of these categories, sufficing to sit quietly, painfully, begging for it all to end. John Leguizamo should never be allowed near a camera again.
Didn't we learn our lesson from Spawn? Yikes, Lee, give it up. I mean, it'd be one thing to make bad films that have some sort of unintentional comedic quality so that at least those who are not awed by your B.S. can have a good chuckle or two, but your films are just painful to watch. Right after we got out of the theater, I screamed "I must watch a decent movie! Anything, I don't care! Let me have faith in film again!A little advice...Hey Spike, how about a movie about the serial killer next time?!
Spike Lee captures the reality of Summer in New York City - Bad vibes.......2006-11-30
I think this is clearly Spike Lee's best movie. I am not a great fan of Spike Lee - I think he is a pretty repulsive individual and his movies generally fall down into hatred of White people, pornography and just general disrespect of everyone, especially women, but I will give Spike Lee credit that he does have a very good understanding for the look and feel of New York City in his time (70s) - he understands the hostile vibes of the street, various different racial, ethnic, class parts of New York City, with the various groups falling down into the same bad, hostile vibes. Summer of Sam shows you how disgusting and hateful New York City can become in the hot, hot Summer. Also, Lee does a great job of depicting a very interesting lower middle class Italian community that is completely hostile to all outsiders - all, hostile to Blacks, hostile to upper class White suburbanites that might want to date an Italian girl from the neighborhood, hostile to anything "different" like British punk rock music and a local guy from the neighborhood who tries to act like a British punk. The movie is very vulgar and violent, but yeah, New York City in the late 70s was violent and hostile. One of the best movies about New York.
A terrible spike lee joint.......2006-09-25
This is what spike lee created? This movie was horrible...graphic sexual content repetitive vulgar language (F words) and a terrible storyline too. It should have never been made this way and spike should have never directed this movie either. He didn't even focus on the son of sam which is the name of this movie. Avoid this movie unless you want to see A rare overrated vulgar soft porno movie. For a good spike lee joint see DO THE RIGHT THING atleast he created a better storyline in that movie than this highly overratted garbage.
