A flawed but admirably ambitious gangster movie, Hoodlum aspires to be a kind of Harlem-based equivalent to The Godfather, and while it falls short of that lofty goal it's still got plenty of qualities to make it well worth seeing. It's the first film to tell the story of Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson (charismatically played by Laurence Fishburne), an ex-convict who dominated the Harlem numbers racket during the 1930s and '40s. As he rises to power he gains equally powerful enemies, including hotheaded Bronx gangster Dutch Schultz (Tim Roth) and the suave mobster Lucky Luciano (Andy Garcia). Determined to defend his Harlem turf against these invaders, Bumpy eclipses the "policy queen" Stephanie St. Clair (Cicely Tyson) and becomes a self-styled Robin Hood figure, attracting the attention of a community servant (Vanessa Williams) who must confront the brutality of Bumpy's business. A must-see for anyone who likes gangster movies, Hoodlum is certainly not a masterpiece, but sharp performances and some powerful scenes make it an interesting look at a little-known chapter in criminal history. --Jeff Shannon
Description
OscarÂ(r) nominees* Laurence Fishburne, Tim Roth and Andy Garcia set the screen ablaze in this riveting crime thriller exploding with spectacular gun battles and brutal action. Customer Reviews:
Great Depression Gang Film.......2007-04-18
If you haven't heard of Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson, then you definitely need to see this movie. It starts of with Bumpy (played wonderfully by Laurence Fishburne) just being released from prison and on the streets of early 1930s Harlem. After his arrival he sees that notorious gangster Dutch Schutz (Tim Roth) has taken control of the numbers racket that once belonged to his boss Stephanie St. Claire (Cicily Tyson). After she is arrested, Bumpy then takes control of her operation and goes into a full-fledged war with with Schutz's crew for control of the numbers racket. After awhile, notorious mob boss Lucky Luciano steps in to calm things down but but by that time it's to late. The acting in this movie made me feel like I was right there in 1930's Harlem. It can go toe-to-toe with an of this mordern day Gangsta films.
Always great movies and great products from Amazon.......2007-03-26
I purchase this gift for my boyfriend. He loved it! This isn't the first time I've purchase a movie from amazon; their products are always good and I never have to complain.
Interesting Movie but not History.......2007-02-10
Great acting and action! Libeling Thomas Dewey ruined the movie for me. Thomas Dewey put mobsters in jail. He didn't take money from them and no evidence exists that he did. Hoodlum is a complete fabrication. I can't understand attacking the reputation of a good man. Disgusting.
Also the role of Bumpy Johnson was overstated. He didn't have such power. Decent movie but absolutely rotten history.
I Had Forgotten How Wonderful This Movie Is!!!!!.......2006-07-22
I had this movie on homemade VHS for a while and just received the DVD.
Mesmerizing!!! Beautifully Filmed! Hats off to Bill Duke - another very distingushed African-American director!!
Once you get past the fact that the movie is FILLED with phenomenal performances from the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Andy Garcia, Tim Roth, Vanessa Williams. Queen Latifah, Loretta Devine, Clarence Williams III, and of course, Miss Cicely Tyson you also discover a gem of a movie.
It follows the exploits of a 30s Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson. Fishburne reminds you of why he is such a charismatic actor. His performance here is one you can watch over and over again. Of course the movie may have been exaggerated but what movie isn't?! It is a very stylized presentation and the obvious attention to detail to create the look and the feel of the period help intensify the viewing experience.
I am quite proud of the production and highly recommend it become part of your movie collection. Notwitstanding that is a worthy project, there are treasures of performances here that warrant attention.
Hoodlum.......2006-07-05
This movie is a good example of the hard times suffered in the cities during the early thirties when brut force was the only laws.People had to survive the times they lived in.

Description
One of the niftiest "B" gangster films of the "noir" era tells the story of ex-con Vincent Lubeck (a solid performance by Reservoir Dogs' Lawrence Tierney) on parole because of the pleadings of his mother, with orders to stay clean for five years. Working for his brother at a gas station, Lawrence looks for an easy way to make money. He calls in some of his old associates and they rob an armored car where several people are killed. Edward Tierney (real-life brother of Lawrence) makes his screen debut delivering a promising performance, and the rest of the cast offer excellent performances in this tough, fast-paced dramatic film from the director of Dillinger, based on actual news accounts of the plight of many ex-cons.
Customer Reviews:
Great Film Noir - Dissapointing Release.......2006-06-21
The movie itself is a wonderful film noir and Laurence Tierney was born to play this part. Image Entertainment's release, on the other hand, is a disgrace. They are consistently using very poor images of great movies and sell them at overblown prices. 'Too Late for Tears', is another example to prove this point. I highly recommend Dark Crimes 50 Movie Pack. It contains 50 public domain movies on 12 DVDs (Hoodlum included) for about $16-$17. You get decent quality recordings at an unbeatable price. Image DVDs are not worth spending money on.
Effective Low-Budget Crime Thriller.......2006-03-16
While I agree with the previous reviewer's comments on the disappointing technical quality of this disc--or at least the source material--I still found "The Hoodlum" an interesting way of spending 60 minutes. This 1951 "B" movie will still appeal to fans of old gangster flicks and "films noir".
The plot is familiar. Vincent Lubeck is a career criminal, and definitely the "black sheep" of his family. Because of Vincent's numerous crimes, and prison sentences, we are told that his father "died of a broken heart". His mother is in a constant state of worry, and his younger brother, Johnny, holds him in contempt. He is paroled from prison because of his mother's pleadings, but Vincent has no real interest in "going straight", even though his brother gives him a job at his gas station. Contacting some of his old cronies, Vincent plans and carries out a bank heist--a heist that results in several fatalities. A showdown with the police seems inevitable--but perhaps there are "family issues" to be settled first.
Lawrence Tierney is terrific as Vincent. This man is a thug, a thief, a liar, a rapist and a killer--a soulless, remorseless excuse for a human being. Mr. Tierney is totally convincing in this role, although in films like "Dillinger" and "Born To Kill", you could say that he had plenty of practice ! Other screen "tough guys" of the forties and fifties are still remembered today--Alan Ladd, Dan Duryea and, of course, Cagney and Bogart--except with genre fans, Lawrence Tierney seems to be forgotten, which is a shame. Certainly, in this type of role, the man had real presence.
Lawrence Tierney's brother, Edward, plays Johnny Lubeck--an interesting piece of casting, although his performance is no more than adequate. Lisa Golm, as Lubeck's mother, has several strong scenes--her final one with the "son from Hell" is a pip !
Again, the black and white, full-screen picture has much "wear and tear", even a few scene jumps, clearly taken from an old, flawed print. I suppose it beats having no film at all. Don't look for extras.
If you can overlook the technical quality, "The Hoodlum" is a very diverting, if somewhat bleak, hour's entertainment. For this viewer at least, Mr. Tierney is worth the "price of admission".
Image Entertainment presents another substandard release.......2006-02-03
I was so looking forward to watching this DVD. After finding this unknown film noir, I noticed it was issued by Image. Anyone familiar with their products knows by now that purchasing from Image is hit and miss in terms of quality. This one is clearly not remastered - or even restored in any way. In fact, the print is plagued in numerous spots from where the film print had broken and then was spliced together with a few damaged frames at each splice removed. When oh when will Image have a consistant quality of product? This could have been a delighful purchase has been turned into a lesson not to buy any more DVDs from this company!

Just Atrocious.......2005-09-03
Lawrence Tierney is one of my very favrotie performers, and even I couldn't watch this movie. The print is awful; the sound is worse; and it frequently skips right past some of the dialogue.
It's not a good movie to begin with, and doesn't really showcase Tierney's talent. It has no real plot, and you don't care about any of the characters except Tierney's long suffering mother, who winds up dying from his very presence, a little eerie in view of the fact that LT's real life mother committed suicide.
You've never seen any of the other performers (unless you're a 3 Stooges fan) or heard of any of the behind the scenes folk, and it's easy to see why.
This is not a B movie. It's firmly ensconced in the D- category, and yet it's spectacular in comparison to the DVD version of it. No features. No labeling of scenes. Scratchy, horrible print. Cover picture that doesn't even resemble the performers.
Cheap, cheap, cheap. They don't come any cheaper.
No more ALPHA videos for me.
Take the $6.98, and donate it to your favorite charity.
I'd suggest you watch my copy, but it wouldn't be worth the postage.
