This modern-day teen update of Les Liaisons Dangereuses suffered at the hands of both critics and moviegoers thanks to its sumptuous ad campaign, which hyped the film as an arch, highly sexual, faux-serious drama (not unlike the successful, Oscar-nominated Dangerous Liaisons). In fact, this intermittently successful sudser plays like high comedy for its first two-thirds, as its two evil heroes, rich stepsiblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), blithely ruin lives and reputations with hearts as black as coal. Kathryn wants revenge on a boyfriend who dumped her, so she befriends his new intended, the gawky Cecile (Selma Blair), and gets Sebastian to deflower the innocent virgin. The meat of the game, though, lies in Sebastian's seduction of good girl Annette (a down-to-earth Reese Witherspoon), who's written a nationally published essay entitled "Why I Choose to Wait." If he fails, Kathryn gets his precious vintage convertible; if he wins, he gets Kathryn--in the sack. When the movie sticks to the merry ruination of Kathryn and Sebastian's pawns, it's highly enjoyable: Gellar in particular is a two-faced manipulator extraordinaire, and Phillippe, usually a black hole, manages some fun as a hipster Eurotrash stud. Most pleasantly surprising of all is Witherspoon, who puts a remarkably self-assured spin on a character usually considered vulnerable and tortured (see Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Liaisons). Unfortunately, writer-director Roger Kumble undermines everything he's built up with a false ending that's true to neither the reconceived characters nor the original story--revenge is a dish best served cold, not cooked up with unnecessary plot twists. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Changing Movies Forever.......2007-04-28

I absolutely loved this movie! There is just no getting around it, the plot is well developed and the twists and turns that happen in the movie are very well done. I think that the casting was done really well; Sarah Michelle Gellar can play the bitchy attitude very well and Reese Witherspoon has always had that innocent girl next door look about her. it is most certainly a movie that I think would have the most appeal to teenagers and people in their 20s.

5 out of 5 stars In 1999 a miracle happened, Cruel Intentions Happened.......2007-04-02

In 1999 one of the best movies ever made was released Cruel Intentions a movie about seduction and destruction. Srah Michelle Gellar plays the leading character deceptive Kathryn Merteuil who makes a bet with her cunning stepbrother Sebastion Valmont played by the incrediable talented Ryan Phillippe who plots to sleep with the headmaster's clever virginal daughter Anette Hargrove (Reese Whiterspoon)before the school year begins. The terms are if Sebastion doesn't succeed in sleeping with Anette than than hot little car of his is hers but if he wins she'll give him something he's been obssessing about ever since the day their parents got married: he would get to sleep with her. Other characters add to the plot like Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair) a naive teen who Court Renyolds dumped Kathryn for. Blaine Tuttle (Joshua Jackson) an openly gay friend of Sebastion. Cecile's black chello teacher and crush Ronald Clifford (Sean Patrick Thomas). Gregory McConnell (Eric Mabius) the first on a list of suspects on who wrote Anette warning her about Sebastion's cruel intentions. Adding to the mix is Sebastion's overcharging pyhciatrist Dr. Greenbaum (Swoosie Kurtz) her easily seduced daughter Marci (Tara Reid)Cecile's prim and proper mother Bunny (Bunny Caldwell) and Sebastion's kind and generous aunt Helen Rosemond (Louise Fletcher). Now that you've been introduced to the characters lets talk about the plot.

Step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastion Valmont had always like the game of seduction and they played it good. After being dumprf on 4th of July weekend, Kathryn learns he fell for naive Cecile Caldwell and offers Sebastion a challeng to seduce Cecile. But Sebastion suggests a greater challlenge to deflower the new headmasters virginal daughter Anette Hargrove before the school year begins. The terms are if he fails Kathryn gets his car and if he wins he gets to sleep with Kathryn. The game is taken to far and until the end of the summer no one will be able to escape their dangerous game of Cat and Mouse. And the biggest shock is the rule is broken when Sebastion begins to fall in love with Anette. Who will win?

I thought this was a fantastic movie. It had suspense emotion, drama, romance and even a little comedy throwed in. When people say this is just another teen movie they are so wrong. This movie had depth and wasn't just an idiotic film. Sarah Michelle Gellar shinned in this movie never like before. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were so convincing and the movie itself was brilliant. Cruel Intentiuons has become one of my favorite novies over the years so not much compares to it. I have not seen Dangerous Liasions but Cruel Intentions will probably turn out better in my view. Don't judge this movie too quickly. Don't look at it has a teen movie. If you ignore that you might find this movie quite good. I love this movie. It is thrilling, clever, sexy, dramatic, romantic, and a very good twisted love story. If I could give it more than 5 points I would!

5 out of 5 stars Not a Selma Blair Fan.......2007-04-02

What's up with Selma Blair's retarded rag doll performance-it's disctracting and really not as funny as the producers seem to think.

Otherwise I think this film is sleek and perfect. I own and watch it regularly.

4 out of 5 stars I really like this movie!.......2007-01-29

I truly think that this movie about love, lies, and deciet was very entertaining and held my interest throughout the entire movie. It is about two wicked stepsiblings who nake their way playing wicked and cruel games on people and victimize people. Thier latest mission involves a new college student who has no idea that the stepbrother is tricking her to win a bet. She also soesn't know that the stepsister who is always kind and wears a smile on her face is an extremely evil and hurtful person who cares only about being number 1 in her wicked life. I highly reccomend it to anyone who loves a good romantic thriller that even surpasses "Basic Instinct" A-

3 out of 5 stars bad influence on kids.......2006-12-17

Sarah Michelle Gellar was gorgeous in her brunetteness. I didn't like the other actors in this movie and I didn't like this movie. It's a glossy movie that glamourizes meanness and Sarah Michelle Gellar's downfall in the end is so unlikely that I betcha some untalented and unlovable rich girls are out there right now sleeping around, taking drugs and sabotaging working girls like Tara Reid, Mischa Barton and Lindsey Lohan with initial false friendship. Sometimes we watch things we know ahead of time that we won't like because it's popular (e.g. Devil's Advocate) because we know it is going to have a social influence. Only by being exposed to the information, will the subsequent patterns of behavior be recognized.

Sarah Michelle Gellar playing the bad guy.....yummy. So used to her as the heroin and now to see her portray a sizzling and seductive character. In my eyes, she can do no wrong. And now, this tantalizing twisted flick hits the high-def arena, I jumped to see Gellar in all her glory. Sony's recent blu-ray releases are blessed with all the bells and whistles and spares no expense in providing them on dual-layer disks. The picture looks fabulous and included an uncompressed 5.1 PCM track to my listening pleasure. All I can say is, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Description

This is the film that Quentin Tarantino (Director, KILL BILL VOL. 1 & 2, PULP FICTION, RESERVOIR DOGS) called "the roughest revenge movie ever made!"… THRILLER - A CRUEL PICTURE is finally making its U.S. DVD debut in this Uncensored Limited Edition. With only 25,000 units in the total DVD production run, this cult gem will soon be gone forever! Order now so you don't miss out on THE exploitation DVD release of the year!

Growing up mute after a childhood sexual assault, a young girl (played by beautiful cult starlet Christina Lindberg) spends years working on a remote farm. After missing the bus one day, she is picked up by a suave young man who takes her out to dinner, drugs her and forces her into a life of drug addiction and prostitution.

Torn away from home, she rebels against her captor only to have one of her eyes gouged out as punishment (in a scene rumored to have been filmed with an actual corpse). After learning of the death of her parents and fed up with the cards life has dealt, she trains herself in the fine arts of fighting, killing and revenge. Transformed into a one-woman killing machine (and armed with a sawed-off shotgun), she uses her new skills to enact bloody revenge on those who have done her wrong.

Synapse Films has painstakingly restored THRILLER - A CRUEL PICTURE from original vault materials to bring you the totally uncensored version of the ultimate revenge-exploitation movie! Originally released in the U.S. in a heavily truncated form as THEY CALL HER ONE EYE, THRILLER is presented here with all the graphic sex, violence and action intact. Over 20 minutes of additional footage has been restored!

1 out of 5 stars Hardly Rough In The Revenge Department.......2007-06-27

Yep...I fell for Quentin Tarantino's recommendation on this one. Before "Kill Bill", I was unaware of this film but I figured if he, being an exploitation afficianado, loved this film, I might find something memorable or entertaining here as well. When I read "roughest revenge movie ever", I'm thinking of "I Spit On Your Grave". If any movie can top that one, I will gladly tip my hat. "Thriller" does not come close to being in the same league as the aforementioned, at least in terms of revenge.

However, the circumstances under which "One-Eye" is living, the setting is ripe for brutal revenge. Afer experiencing a traumatizing molestation as a child, she is kidnapped by this Leisure-Suit Larry type of guy, looking suspiciously like Larry Dallas with a mustache. He shoots her full of heroin for a while and preps her for a life of forced prostitution where clients of all types and fetishes come to his swingin' pad to have their way with her. In fact, one such client becomes the reasoning for our "hero" being named "One-Eye". In the grand scheme of things, this has little or nothing to do with anything relevant in the movie.

After about the first 15-20 minutes, "Thriller" takes a turn into more of a pornographic nature with many sexual situations laid out on screen for all to see. Some situations are left out but it's hard to tell if that was done with purpose or just an oversight. The rest - consisting of anything short of oral sex, is on screen for all to witness with the occasional close-up. Pretty much nothing is left to the imagination and nothing is implied. Somewhere amidst all of this sex, One-Eye finds the time to take karate and sharpshooting lessons to eventually exact her revenge.

Nevermind the obvious questions about how she was able to find the time to prepare herself with kung fu or why her pimp would even allow her out long enough to learn these skills. If you've seen any of these Euro-sleeze exploitation movies before, you alredy know that logic eludes these films almost entirely. If you have not experienced these types of movies, the obvious lack of continuity, narrative and sense is very apparent from the outset. Still, this could have been a relatively exciting film had the big build-up to the apparent revenge had been something more than it turned out to be. After sitting through about 75 minutes of porn and drug addiction mixed in with occasional scenes of preparation to exact her revenge, One-Eye finally goes on her "rampage" against her aggressors and, in the end, it is no more "brutal" or "rough" than anything you've ever seen cable TV, only with much less stylization.

So yes, the big finalé is all a giant waste. After pulling no punches with the pornography scenes, the "killing spree" at the end is no more exciting or heart-pounding than something you might have seen on Hill Street Blues. Even One-Eye finally getting her pimp was a big build up to nothing. With the sex, nothing is left to the imagination. When she kills her assailant, you get nothing. In a way, this could be the result of voyeurism on my part - wanting to see grizzly death sequences after seeing so much explicit sex. But that's the point of exploitation films - nothing is supposed to be implied or left to the imagination. It's the trade-off for sacrificing story, character development, acting and all of the other traits of a good film. If you must see this movie, rent it first. Otherwise, skip to something that lives up to it's moniker.

5 out of 5 stars Turn it on for the slo-mo violence, stay for the hard core sex.......2007-06-12

Some people say that the hard core sex scenes are clumsily edited into this movie. I strongly disagree. Seeing in extreme close-up the one customer plow her back passage with his John Thomas and then deposit his creamy appreciation on her buttocks did a great deal to advance the story line for me. Without that scene, I would have been asking far too many questions. Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars So bad it's BAD!.......2007-06-02

This film really doesn't even seem to try in the ol "Revenge Movie" genre. All of the action scenes are in slow motion and just terrible really. I mean a few scenes would be ok but in the end it makes the film really look dated and shoddy.

I'm sure it has it's fans, what film doesn't but this is also the true X rated version also with all of the super dirty old school porn inserts. Blech!!!! It is just disgusting and dated. It doesn't enhance what she goes through and makes it just look cheap. In the end though I believe that the hardcore inserts were needed to get people interested because the film is absolutely ridiculous. You'd do better to find the "Pinky Violence" films or even some Pam Grier movies like "Coffy"/"Foxy Brown". This film could have been a classic without the hardcore garbage and better violence. During that time period they could have learned to do it better even on a low budget as many films proved this time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Good representative of 70s European movie industry.......2007-05-17

I dont know which one of the 1000 things shall i write to the ones who are disturbed by the hardcore and blood scenes!
1- Buy the "venegeance" version. Or better, dont buy this movie.
2- Cinema is an art form, accept it in its completeness. Modern people are so much used to getting their demands done in a second, some are really spoiled. A movie isnt a bigMac; you dont have the priviledge of asking the director to take the onion out of it. Eat it as it is or dont buy it.
3- The very same people are infact responsible of censore. Again, if your stomach cant take it, dont eat it.
4- Thriller is a very good representative of 1970 European movie industry in many aspects. Read about movie history first and learn why directors had to include such scenes. Thriller was made in 1974, so it was shaped by that days' environment, so think according to that. You cant ask the studio to take out the scenes nor do it yourself at home just because it doesnt suit todays culture or rather just because it doesnt suit your personal taste.
5- You sound like a retard who doesnt like a color in a picasso painting and painting it over. Editing a scene in a movie -after its completion by its director- is nothing different than painting over a picasso.
6- Learn to accept any kind of art "as it is". Its a form of respecting others thoughts

5 out of 5 stars hard hitter.......2007-05-16

this movie was crazy good. if your in to chessy slow-mo fighting with mouth fulls of blood splater. i never laughed so hard and the way she killed the guy at the end was the most gruesome execution id ever seen. this is now one of my favorite movies ever next to "itchy the killer".

Description

In this acclaimed adaptation of Nicholas Monserrat's epic international bestseller, Jack Hawkins stars as the all-too-human commander of a small convoy escort vessel during the brutal Battle Of The North Atlantic. Amidst an ocean that churns with equal parts heroism and horror, the captain and inexperienced crew of the HMS Compass Rose must wage a constant battle for survival against sudden torpedo attacks by Nazi U-boats as well as the unforgiving cruelty of the sea itself. Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker, Donald Sinden and Virginia McKenna co-star in this classic drama that was nominated for three British Academy Awards — including Best British Actor for Hawkins and Best Film — that still stands as one of most gripping motion pictures ever made about courage, carnage and the grim realities of men in combat

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Cruel Sea.......2007-06-26

With a literate, nuanced script by the gifted Eric Ambler, this taut, tight little war film is distinguished by the stunning work of Hawkins as world-(and war-) weary Ericson, patiently but firmly coalescing an inexperienced, fractionated group of young men into a proficient crew. Hawkins is buoyed by solid support from Baker (thoroughly detestable here), and fine work by actors Sinden and Stratton. Also look for Denholm Elliott, Alec McCowen and a lovely Virginia McKenna in smaller roles.

4 out of 5 stars An Almost Perfect Cast.......2007-06-14

I consider, "The Cruel Sea" based on the novel by Nicholas Montserrat to be one of the better and more realistic films on the Second World War to be made in post war Britain. It is understaed and mostly well acted. Jack Hawkins fits easily into the part of captain and he is well supported by Donlad Sinden who had not, at that time, become a caricature of hiself with his ridiculous voice. Stanley Baker is excellent as the boorish former car salesman with his cry of, "Snorkers, good oh!" referring to the awful tinned sausages and he is counterbalanced beautifully by a young Denholm Elliot who is cuckholded by his theatrical wife. There is a stark realism which brings home the sheer awfulness of the daily risk and drudgery and fear that makes up war.

5 out of 5 stars The Cruel Sea.......2007-05-29

In my opinion the best naval film about WWII ever made. Leave it to the English to get it right, this is definately not a Hollywood movie. You'll notice several actors who went on to star in other big films at a later date. Jack Hawkins, for example, was a leading figure in Laurance of Arabia. This film shows what it was really like serving aboard one fo the English Corvettes (destroyer) escorting convoys and dealing with the German U-boats.

5 out of 5 stars "Cruel Sea" the forgotten sea war.......2007-05-15

I first saw this film soon after it was released in the U.S. In a nutshell, I believe it ranks right up there with "Das Boot" insofar as both films deal with WW ll's Battle of the Atlantic. "Cruel Sea" tells the story of the men and women who fought the war from the surface against the U-Boats in the Royal Navy and the Allied Merchant Marine. Great performances by Jack Hawkins and others who would appear in later films such as "Zulu".

The film is an accurate portayal of this sea war. As a matter of fact, I saw this film screened at the Seaman's Church Institute in New York with an audience of merchant sailors - some of whom had survived the Atlantic in open lifeboats after a successful U-Boat attack. This film moved some of them to tears.

Incidentally, the first warship introduced in the film is a corvette. The only surviving corvette is the "Sackville", a Canadian museum ship berthed in Halifax, NS

3 out of 5 stars The Cruel Sea.......2007-05-08

The movie was as good as can be expected for the year it was made. Also the reality of escort duty in WWII. The Cruel Sea is definably a movie to watch for people like me, die hard WWII buffs.

There's a reason you haven't heard of this straight-to-video "sequel" to the seamy teen romp that had Ryan Phillippe baring his polished behind: it's twice as bad as the first one and is only worth a look to see just how embarrassingly buttless it can get. Writer-director Roger Kumble's original was no classic, Lord knows, but at least the game, nubile cast knew how to smack its lips--his follow-up (which, in tamer form, was to be the pilot for a proposed series called Manchester Prep) can't even pout properly. Phillippe's Sebastian character (here played by a bland, doughy Robin Dunne) is carted back out to be reintroduced to scheming stepsister Kathryn, enacted by a woefully unsexy Amy Adams (Sarah Michelle Gellar played Sebastian's ripe cousin in the first film). The two don't hit it off, and Sebastian--far more sentimental than his big-screen counterpart--immediately decides he's all for love, in the form of pristine deb Danielle (Sarah Thompson). It all amounts to a ponderously cartoonish nothing, including a twist ending that renders everything proceeding it completely incomprehensible. Kumble has the film spouting homilies on love and self-esteem, then randomly throws in bare breasts; it's like a horny Saved by the Bell, without the kick or pacing of good camp. --Steve Wiecking

1 out of 5 stars First movie is ALWAYS the best one than the second movie.......2007-04-16

This movie is pretty odd and little mix-up parts but it's ALMOST the same as the first movie. I always like the first movie better than this one. I ordered this movie because of Keri Lynn Pratt and that I really loved the first one and I was hoping this movie would be great one but it's not. I still have this movie but I hardly watch this movie because my boyfriend really love this movie so I dont bother sell it. Our things is ours so. I am warning you guys dont order this movie unless you REALLY want to see it then go rent a movie BEFORE you order it!! Save your money!!

3 stars for the scene with Kery Lynn Pratt and the horse. Also
Amy Adams is to die for

3 out of 5 stars Just horrible.......2005-10-14

I've seen the first Cruel Intentions, which I didn't like very much. Compared to this movie, the original looks like Casablanca. I watched this one on DVD. You can see why it's direct to video. i understand the characters are the same because it is a prequel. But the dialog and plot were virtually the same. What do you get with this one: cheap exploitation, racial sterotypes, and a ridiculous, unfathomable ending which is cut off all too soon.

1 out of 5 stars First one=intriguing, second one=biggest mistake ever, third one= redemption.......2005-09-05

Now the Second one is pretty bad and tries too hard to be as good as the first. It is very hard to create a sequel as good as the first but this one certainly proves that point. Jurassic park two Lost world is worth it compared to this one. don't even waste the $3.00.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Sequel I have seen to date.......2005-05-08

This movie has horrible acting, and a storyline that is so farfetched its in outerspace. This is definetly not a movie for young people considering the constant inuendo and sex scenes. This movie only gets 1 star because that is the lowest option. If I could really choose it would get none. It is best to stick to the first which at least had wit and direction. Cruel Intentions 2 is the same storyline just trashier.

5 out of 5 stars Melissa Yvonne Lewis?.......2005-12-02

I watch this bec. or Melissa Yvonne Lewis, remember Joe Schmoe where she play the rich bitch, she did a superb job on that show, but on this movie, her acting is just a mediocre.

on the movie - just average, very predictable, nothing really exciting

1 out of 5 stars This film sucks.......2005-10-14

Two guys at a college prep school make wagers on seducing naive young girls, and then meet their match when they agree to see which one can seduce the most popular and devious girl who has her own agenda to everything. I think this film is really sucks but I loved Cruel Intentions 1 and CI2 but this film sucked.

4 out of 5 stars a worthy sequel.......2005-03-13

This movie was a worthy sequel to the original installment. They were clever, and didn't use different actors for the same charactesr, which almost always is a disaster (the exception, imo, would be Scarlet, the sequel to Gone With The Wind). Instead, they focused on Katherine's cousein, Cassidy, who's very worthy of being a successor, and her malevolent friend, Jason. The movie is charming, and has its own, different, plot. The ending is particularly good, because of the double-twist. The really interesting thing is that you're actually rooting for Cassidy and Jason to get together, and they do in a way.

The background music in this movie is normally good, and fits with the mood. However, it doesn't have something as awesome as Verge's Bitter Sweet Symphony.

If you liked this movie, I'd recommend reading Choderos de Laclos' book: it's a classic. I'd also recommend Marquis de Sade's _Juliette_.

4 out of 5 stars Surprising. . ........2004-12-20

I bought this only because i loved the first one, hoping it wasn't as terrible as the second. After i watched it i was so impressed. First of all i loved that it really didn't have anything to do with the first, aside from Cassidy being Katherine's cousin, and sharing the same last name (there is only one reference to Katherine and Sebastian in the beginning). It is much better than having different actors playing old characters, which drags a movie down alot. I thought the story was great, with good twists. The whole cast is very attractive, which can't hurt either. The "bad" characters are all pretty likeable, aside from one, and all is well in the end. The best thing about this movie is the character Cassidy. I sarted out hating her, and ended up really liking her for her realness, and honesty she does not try to hide that she is a b*tch. This actress does a particularly good job, pulling off both loveable, and complete brat at the same time. I would definetly reccomend this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Soooooo bad !!!!!.......2004-10-03

Yesterday, i was in a DVD store when i ran into this. As i had enjoyed the first movie quite a lot (and despite the second one which was awful) i decided to buy Cruel Intentions 3. Back home, i sat on my coach and started to watch... After 5 minutes, i was already wondering why on earth i had spent money on such rubbish.
This movie has nothing in common with the first one or the second one. It's the story of Katherine Merteuil's cousin, Cassidy (which doesn't have the class of Katherine and dresses more like a hooker), and of a friend of hers, Jason (played by Kerr Smith, seen in Dawson's Creek). Bye bye the luxurious mansions and appartments in New York and the picnics in Central Park... The story is here set in California, under the palm trees. The characters are sticky, insipid and unclassy. The movie goes in every direction. There are no surprises at all, everything is clear from the beginning.
It's the very first time i'm so dissapointed by a DVD i buy (and i have quite a lot...).
Do NOT buy this ! It's worth nothing !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A sterling collection of several excellent British WW II films.......2005-10-18

Over the years I have with effort to see a large number of British films and had seen four of the five films in this collection. In all four cases, however, the print I saw was vastly inferior to the superb prints contained in this fascinating set of films. So far I've seen three sets of DVDs from Ealing: one featuring the films of Alec Guinness, another containing several non-Guinness comedies, and this collection of war films. I hope that they don't stop with these. Although the sets are remarkable for the utter and complete absence of extras (and by none I truly do mean none), the prints themselves have in ever instance been impeccable. A bit about each film.

THE DAM BUSTERS--Of all the films in the set, this is the one that is most widely available. I first saw this as a small kid when in my most passionate warmonger phase. It is based on an actual bombing raid in WW II where a technique for attacking dams was developed by a British scientist. By dropping bombs so that they would skip across water like stones across the surface of a pond, they were able to attack targets surrounded by water that were normally protected by torpedo nets. Michael Redgrave anchors an excellent cast of performers who will largely be unknown to American audiences, though Basil Sydney appears in both this film and in WENT THE DAY WELL?, while a very young Robert Shaw can be seen in several scenes. If one is very attentive one will spot a very young Patrick McGoohan in a small role as a guard.

THE CRUEL SEA--Far and away the best film of the bunch, and one of the very best films about the Battle of the North Atlantic, this brings home the story of escort work against the German U-Boats better than any other film. The movie tells the story of the Compass Rose, a destroyer employed in protecting cargo ships during the early part of WW II. The cast is outstanding, anchored by a powerful performance by Jack Hawkins, a superb actor not as well known in the US as he deserves to be, though his role in THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI guarantees that he will not ever be forgotten (he is the only one of the major stars who ends the film alive) and also by his memorable role as an alcoholic missionary in ZULU. Speaking of ZULU, the star of that film, Stanley Baker, has a memorable supporting role here as the overly intense first officer in the first third of the film. Many of the other performers will be more familiar by face than by name, the best known by far being a very young and startling handsome Denholm Elliott. The film has many marvelous moments as well as two haunting scenes: the first where Hawkins has to attack a German U-Boat that is submerged below a group of British sailors in the water awaiting rescue, but instead find the destroyer dropping depth charges directly below them, guaranteeing their deaths. Equally disturbing is the sound of the men over the communication tubes after the Compass Rose has been struck by a torpedo. One could add the ensuing scene as well, the British sailors who crowd onto the two rafts following the sinking of the ship, only a few managing to survive the night. All in all, this is a powerful, disturbing film driven by a string of strong performances.

THE COLDITZ STORY--John Mills stars in this excellent film about prisoners of war intent on escaping from an interment camp in Colditz Castle. Directed by Guy Hamilton, of James Bond fame, the film tells the story of British, Polish, and French soldiers who gradually learn to coordinate their efforts in escaping from the camp. There are a score of fine performances in this one, led by Mills and Eric Portman as leaders of the British officers, and backed by memorable performances by the likes of Ian Carmichael, Lionel Jeffries, and Bryan Forbes. Film and folk music fans will also recognize Theodore Bikel as one of the Polish officers.

THE SHIP THAT DIED OF SHAME--I saw this one many years ago in an inferior print. It is an unusual film, almost a gothic ghost story. It stars George Baker and Richard Attenborough as two former officers of a WW II wooden patrol boat. I'm not certain what they were called in Britain, but in the US they were called PT boats, though unlike the famous PT-109 this ship is fitted with deck guns instead of torpedo tubes. The ship distinguishes itself in wartime, but after the war is put into mothballs until after the war, when the two officers buy it to use it for smuggling. With the help of the boat's former coxswain, they engage in petty smuggling for a long while, but eventually get involved in more serious crime. At this point the boat starts mysteriously breaking down or steering hard when doing something deeply wrong. In the end, the boat seemingly commits suicide rather than continue being used in criminal activities. This is certainly not a great film, but it does manage to be a very interesting one.

WENT THE DAY WELL?--This was the one film I had not seen before and it is the only one actually made during WW II. It was definitely made as a morale booster and tells the fictional story of a German invasion by a company of English-speaking troops of a small English village as a prelude to an invasion of Britain by German forces at large. It is a fairly improbable film, in that even if Hitler had been able to assemble that many soldiers who could pass for English, it would be highly unlikely that they would have been squandered so readily. Nonetheless, the film is entertaining and avoids most of the sentimentality and hollow patriotism one might expect in such an effort. The cast is strong, with the normally heroic Leslie Banks playing a German plant in the village. If it isn't in the end especially convincing, it nonetheless features a likable ensemble cast.

One thing all of these films have in common, and something typical of most of the Ealing Studios films, is marvelous scores. Many of Britain's finest orchestral composers wrote for the cinema and scores and the playing are almost always incomparable.

These films may not have the macho heroism associated with American films, but I find these much more focused on the actual human experience. They truly are must-see films both for fans of British cinema and for any WW II buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Britain At War........2005-08-08

As someone who was born in Britain and spent his childhood there in the fifties, I remember being taken by my parents to see several of these films when they were released, particularly "The Dam Busters" and "The Colditz Story". So I do appreciate this collection of British World War II films by Anchor Bay, and the memories that came flooding back.

All five films are a crisp black and white, full-screen, mono sound, but--apart from a nice booklet--the DVDs have no extras. As of this writing, Richard (now Lord)Attenborough, Sir Donald Sinden and Richard Todd are still "with us", so their comments would have been fascinating. Some extras--comments on these films and the British war film genre in general--would have been a "nice touch", to say the least.

"The Cruel Sea"--quite simply one of the finest and most realistic films about naval warfare ever made. As the captain of a corvette assigned to protect supply convoys from German U-boats, Jack Hawkins gives one of his best performances--you will not forget the scene where he must decide the fate of some stranded sailors--this is real war, where good people must make heart-breaking decisions. Mr. Hawkins receives fine support from Donald Sinden and Denholm Elliott. A real classic.

"The Dam Busters"--that superb actor, Michael Redgrave, stars as British scientist/engineer/inventor Barnes Wallis, who fought an uphill battle with the British military (and far too much "red tape")with his innovative plan to destroy dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley, and cripple Hitler's industry. After various setbacks, he proves that his "bouncing" bomb does indeed work. That's when Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his squadron of Lancaster bombers become involved, with much intensive training, and ultimately one of the most dangerous missions of the war. "The Dam Busters" is another true classic--and a treat for aviation fans.

"The Colditz Story"--John Mills, Eric Portman, Bryan Forbes and a number of other fine British actors portray prisoners in Germany's infamous Colditz Castle. Their captors tell them that escape is impossible ! Oh really ? John Mills and his compatriots beg to differ ! This film isn't quite a classic, but the performances and situations will still demand your attention--and, again, the film is based a real events.

"The Ship That Died of Shame"--the titular vessel is a small, well-armed speed boat that served with distinction during the war. It is "saved" from mothballs after the war by its old crew, played by Richard Attenborough, George Baker and Bill Owen. However, Mr. Attenborough's intentions for the boat are totally dishonourable--he sees big money in smuggling, and drags his old mates (Messrs. Baker and Owen)into this lucrative, but high-risk business. As time goes by, the "business" becomes even nastier, with the main characters turning on one another and bringing "shame" to their once-proud ship. The film is a fascinating exercise in the study of human greed and immorality.

"Went the Day Well"--here is the "sleeper" in this collection. I had never seen this one--what a movie ! This film has consistent suspense, worthy of Alfred Hitchcock ! It was released in 1943, when the war with Germany was still raging, and there are various scenes and situations which I suppose can be considered propaganda--an attempt to boost the spirits of the British public and remind them how evil the Nazis were (as if this was necessary after the Blitz !). A small English village is visited by British troops on "manouvers"--except they aren't British at all ! They are Nazis who have sneaked into Britain to establish a "beach-head" for a large-scale German invasion. They threaten the villagers with death, and are only too pleased to demonstrate that they mean business ! Even children are threatened (of course, after the war, with the discovery of the concentration camps, nothing in this film can be considered an "exaggeration" ). Leslie Banks stars, with a very nice turn by David Farrar as a particularly reprehensible Nazi. "Went the Day Well" is not the most famous title in this collection--but it just might be the most unforgettable !

Britain produced a lot of World War II films in the fifties. Many of them had a very authentic look and feel about them. This was likely because many of the people involved had experienced "the real thing", with memories and details still fresh in their minds.

I would certainly welcome another collection--"Above Us the Waves"--"The Sea Shall Not Have Them"--"Cockleshell Heroes"--"The Wooden Horse"--"The One That Got Away"--"Reach for the Sky"--"Carve Her Name With Pride"--"The Battle of the River Plate"--"Yangtze Incident"--"Ill Met by Moonlight"--there are many titles that come to mind.

Bottom line--this is a fine collection of movies that show, from a number of viewpoints, how bravely and competently British people coped with the war, and an evil enemy. Rule Britannia indeed !

Description

George Muller (1805-1898) was a German playboy who found Christ and gave his life to serve Christ unreservedly. His mission was to rescue orphans from the wretched street life that enslaved so many children in England during the time of Charles Dickens and Oliver Twist. Muller did rescue, care for, feed, and educate such children by the thousands. The costs were enormous for such a great work. Yet, amazingly, he never asked anyone for money. Instead he prayed, and his children never missed a meal.

This docu-drama presents his life story and shows how God answered prayer and met their needs. It is a story that raises foundational questions regarding faith and finances. Also included are two special documentaries on Muller and some of the lives affected by his work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-17

This is an excellent documentary of the life and times of George Muller, a Prussian-born, English man of faith and prayer who established orphanages in Bristol, England in the 19th century. Weaving together video of on-site locations, historical pictures, narration and drama, this well-done and interesting presentation is both challenging and inspiring as one sees how God answers prayer and provides for the needs of His children who trust Him. Two extra special features: one on Muller (28 min.) and the other with interesting testimonies of some of those influenced by his work (18 min.) are also well-done and an added bonus.

Imagine being a woman in a men's prison. Alluvial Filmworks presents an award-winning and shocking documentary film - Cruel & Unusual. This documentary is an unflinching examination of transgender women in men's prisons. Cruel Intentions

Cruel Intentions 2
There's a reason you haven't heard of this straight-to-video "sequel" to the seamy teen romp that had Ryan Phillippe baring his polished behind: it's twice as bad as the first one and is only worth a look to see just how embarrassing it can get.

3 out of 5 stars First is good, second is eh..........2005-01-18

The first Cruel Intentions was such a good movie, Actors you actually hear of, & can relate to(kinda), Sarah M. Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, and Reese Witherspoon were good charactars... The second one is not all that great, for some reason the story seems to be identical to the first, As much as I like the first, I wanted something different for the second, The charactars also had the exact same names, but they are clearly different people, They should have gotten the same actors if they wanted that!!!!!!!! No wonder it was a straight to video release, no one wants to pay to see the same film twice, stick with the first one, and I just got the 3rd(hopefully its a DIFFERENT story), but if I hadnt seen the first, I might have liked the second, but the reason I didnt is because it was the same story with inferior actors/actresses playing the roles, so 4 1/2 stars for the first, 2 1/2 for the second, It averages out to 3 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Best Intentions.......2002-09-23

This movie is amazing!! I loved it. I watch it every chance I get.

5 out of 5 stars Cruel intentions.......2002-01-25

I loved the first movie (big fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar). The rest of the cast was also great in their roles. The basic plot is that Sebastian and Catherin are step siblings and they have wanted to ahve sex but know they can't (family reasons), so they make a bet that if Sebatian can sleep with Annette (the headmaster's daughter) that he will sleep with Catherine, and if he can't sleep with Annette, Catherine will get his car. The movie takes off from there and it is a great film for a Friday/Saturday night!

The second one, while great for a laugh (horrible acting, the actors do not even resemble the original cast) and it was cut from the series that they were going to make of the movie (Manchester Prep, never aired).

I will give it five stars (not going to punish it because of the prequel)

1 out of 5 stars Such a bad movie they made a second!.......2001-09-20

The first movie was full of hammy and snobbish acting. Perhaps it was the point of the first movie to just be rude and awkward because the plot of this movie is that a boy bets his step sister that he can sleep with the new girl on campus. This is not an original plotline, but the added twist is that if the boy sleeps with this new girl, as part of the bet the step sister will give herself to her step-brother. Take that for what its worth. There was a good crop of rookie actors in the first movie, but then the second movie is not worth it at all. It was a B movie... which is why it went straight to video. If your a frustrated teen boy, you will love this movie for its sexual content. Otherwise, it is greatly overacted and over dramatic.

1 out of 5 stars Manuvering and Mundame..........2001-09-05

I suppose as a 'teen' movie, and in comparison to other teen movies, Cruel Intentions could be seen as a 4 star flick, especially when you consider the above average acting of it's a-list cast.

Cruel Intentions, however didn't do anything except bore me. Obviously the actors cannot be blamed. The plot and direction (or lack thereof) is what seriously stunts this film. This is an R-rated movie. Why it was dumbed-down to the degree that it was baffles me. Cruel Intentions could have been far more vindictive, sexual, and ultimately more entertaining (and given the ending much more weight in any event), if the director had spun it in a more coherent way.

Alas, this movie falls completely flat on it's face. I found it neither funny, romantic or engaging - or naughty enough to keep me interested. The only good swing in this movie is that in the end, both characters get what they deserve. There are a lot of things that could be made into a movie. Why this book was ever made into a movie I'll never know.
